PRESIDENT FROM THE

The stage is set as Voices of Vision continues It’s already been a month since Voices of Vision, but I’m still fired up! It was incredible to host NBA superstar and entrepreneur Shaquille O’Neal. As we suspected, the event was BIG in many ways. We got the experience of hosting our biggest event ever in the largest venue we’ve been in yet.

When you see Shaq on TV, you get a sense of his larger-than-life personality. But what surprised me was that persona was nothing like the person we met that day. Shaq seems to have two versions of himself—one who is a character for the public, and Shaquille O’Neal who is humble, genuine and soft-spoken. His stories about his family and career were

touching. I got the sense that the real Shaq is simply a father who wants to provide for his loved ones. And to do that, he knows he has to put that Shaq hat on to get the gigs. He’s smart about his investments. I think many people weren’t sure what to expect walking in to the Sanford Health Athletic Complex that day, and some probably even had low expectations. But the intrigue of seeing such a celebrity in person is something you don’t pass up. His speech was short and simple, but it resonated with those Midwest values many of us in attendance have. As he transitioned to the Q&A portion, that’s where he really shined. I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did.

Believe it or not, we’re already making plans for next year’s event. We asked for your suggestions for the next speaker and are combing through the list of names. We really do value your feedback. We heard your request for a female speaker next year, and we’re committed to trying to find one that is the right fit for this event. Stay tuned folks!

EVENT RECAP

SHAQ

at the SHAC:

A slam-dunk event

What an amazing time we had at last month’s Voices of Vision! Held October 4 at the Sanford Health Athletic Complex with Shaquille O’Neal, it was our biggest Chamber event ever. Shaq took the stage and shared many personal and professional stories and advice with the crowd of over 1,400. Then, WDAY-TV’s Dana Mogck moderated a Q&A with the NBA legend. Shaq discussed how he got his start, how he chooses his partnerships and the importance of staying humble and making a positive difference. He left quite the mark on us, and we’re grateful for everyone that came to hear from this larger-than-life personality—who just so happens to have North Dakota ties and really loves Dot’s pretzels. Young Professionals Best Place to Work:

You’ve probably already heard of local marketing and technology firm Sundog for their fun company culture, but what you might not know is how much emphasis they put on creating a great place to work for young professionals. As winner of this year’s ChamberChoice YP Best Place to Work award, their efforts are clearly working. “We have a great team here at Sundog, and being recognized as a great place to work affirms that our priorities are in the right place,” Eric Dukart, chief strategy officer, said. Founded in 1995 as a tech startup, today they say Sundog is not just an ad agency or software firm. They’re a best-of-bothworlds hybrid. With offices in Fargo and Minneapolis and a client base throughout the U.S., they’re focused on helping their clients create 8  THE BRIDGE · NOVEMBER 2017

digital transformation, which they say is a major shift for many industries. While Sundog works across the country, they hold Fargo close to their heart. The company’s leadership team all graduated from local universities, and many grew up here. In fact, that’s one of the reasons why they focus heavily on their Sundog internship program – to continue to recruit the best local talent and inspire the next generation of leaders. (Fun fact: Even the name of the company is inspired by Fargo! ‘Sundog’ is a nod to the phenomenon that occurs on cold, sunny days.)

With about 100 full-time employees at Sundog, 70% are under the age of 35, and all are encouraged to take part in all aspects of the company. They recognize that talent has nothing to do with age, and allow everyone who works there to make his or her mark, regardless of their role or longevity. Because Sundog’s culture is family first, they provide a number of fun events like a Halloween and holiday party. On Fridays, they have Four O’ Clocks, where everyone gathers for food, drinks and games. And their Culture Club plans events that encourage a collaborative

environment. One recent intern planned an in-office yoga session called “Downward Sundog.” Sundog’s young professionals are encouraged to attend conferences throughout the year. When they learn new things, team members can host Tech Talks during the workday.

Sundog puts great importance on collaborating with the community. “It isn’t just about doing well. It’s about doing good,” Dukart said. “Our outreach is built around giving our time, talents and treasure to our community.” For instance, their Education Innovators program focuses on giving back through pro bono

projects, sponsorships and mentorship opportunities at local schools and tech camps. It’s clear that leadership believes that culture is at the heart of their success, and they make sure to live their core values in every aspect of the business. Their philosophy is to do what you love and love what you do. That focus on people and passion is reflected everywhere, from being employee-owned to modern office spaces, to monthly social events.

Chamber hosts roundtable on tax reform with Rep. Cramer

Last month, we were pleased to welcome ND Congressman Kevin Cramer to The Chamber for a special discussion on tax reform. Prompted by talks at the federal level, this roundtable allowed local business leaders and Chamber board members to learn the specifics and weigh in with their questions and concerns.

Cramer explained a few highlights of the plan, which include shrinking the current seven tax brackets into three for individuals and families, repealing the death tax and alternative minimum tax, creating a lower tax rate and structure for small businesses, allowing expensing of capital investments, and more.

The Unified Tax Reform Framework follows a plan put together by the Trump administration and Congress. It has four main goals: to make the tax code simple, fair and easy to understand; give American workers a pay raise; and level the playing field and make America the jobs magnet of the world.

“This tax reform has had the advantage of going second,” Cramer said. “The failure of health care [reform] has a lot to do with being first and not having the luxury of time that tax reform has had.” He also explained their idea for “postcard” tax filing—an idea that with such a simplified tax system, up to 96% of Americans could

One challenge we face is understanding how other people communicate. Studies show that each individual has a preferred style of communication, therefore, in order to connect with others we must learn to flex our communication styles. In this interactive session, you will assess your own communication style and work together to identify ways you can flex your style in order to open up the communication channels and gain understanding with those you interact with on a regular basis.

Creating positive changes in an organization cannot be accomplished by any one individual, no matter how much time and hard work that person dedicates to the effort. We all have two sides to our social mask. The outside is filled with positive traits we project to the world, while the inside is filled with our quiet thoughts and concealed self. As women, we feel particular pressure to prove we “have it all together.” This constant stress is exhausting and leaves us hoping people do not see the mess and chaos bubbling beneath the surface. In a world where we are challenged to be authentic and vulnerable, how do we know what to share with those around us, and how do we honor the parts of ourselves we choose to keep from the world? Learn the theory behind the persona, explore the two sides of your unique social mask, and build understanding and appreciation at this session. Please consider bringing new toys or Christmas gifts to donate to FirstLink’s Giving Tree of Hope and Toys for Tots.

As we go through life, we wear many shoes—both literally and figuratively. Here, we’ll be given the opportunity to reflect on our own journey, both professionally and personally, to celebrate all we have accomplished and be encouraged in experiences we have yet to enjoy. Recognize your influence as a leader, discover your reasons and abilities to live with more intention, and prepare for obstacles you get to overcome! You don’t need to be a shoe-lover to enjoy this message, but you should have an interest in laughing, inspiring and exploring possibilities. Please consider bringing new socks to donate to the men staying at Dorothy Day House of Hospitality.

YEA!: YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS ACADEMY

Here we go again!

We are picking up right where we left off with the Young Entrepreneurs Academy in the spring! Once again, we have 17 students full of fresh ideas and enthusiasm for the entrepreneurial adventure they are beginning. For us, it’s fun to see how unique each group of students is and the YEA! class of 2018 couldn’t be more different than the class of 2017. Last year’s class had just a few more boys than girls with a fairly even balance of middle and high school students. This year, we have a lot of girl power with 11 girls and a small, but mighty group of six boys. We also have a lot of upperclassmen, with over half of the students being in 11th and 12th grades. Most importantly, we have seven schools that have never been represented in YEA! enrolled in the program this year. Ben Franklin Middle School, Carl Ben Eielson Middle School, Kindred Public School, Park Christian, Sheyenne High School, Woodrow Wilson and homeschool networks are all new to our academy. We’re thrilled to see that the word about YEA! is getting around and more students are choosing to participate in this unique program.

We kicked off the 2017-18 YEA! year last month with orientation and classes at the Concordia College Offutt School of Business. Chamber President and CEO, Craig Whitney, Stacey Tronson, VP-compliance officer from Cornerstone Bank and Ahmed Kamel, associate dean of the Offutt School of Business at Concordia College, were all on hand to celebrate the start of a new year. Students and their parents also got to hear from YEA! graduates Mukai Selekwa and Bridget McManamon.

Welcome back, Josh! The success of our local Young Entrepreneurs Academy is attributed to the volunteers who give their time and energy to helping our students. Josh Teigen, president and chief visionary of Protosthetics, has become a tremendous asset to our program throughout the last two years. We appreciate that he has agreed to serve as our YEA! instructor once again!

Getting Schooled: Leadership Class Focuses on Education

For nearly a decade, the Leadership Fargo Moorhead West Fargo class has partnered with Junior Achievement to teach hands-on, experiential lessons focused on work readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy to students at Robert Asp and Madison Elementary Schools. Taking place on career day in the schools, our Leadership participants were able to interact with the next generation of the workforce. It was not only a great experience for the kids, but it was also impactful for our participants. The class also got to hear from Diane Solinger from the Jeremiah Program, who shared the exciting news from their organization. The Jeremiah Program is a non-profit that empowers single mothers often in poverty to further their own education, offering a childhood development center to their children and providing a safe haven for them to live. In Fargo, the program will have a brand-new building open in January 2018. Then, Sara Miller from Swanson Health Products shared about career and life “pivots” and building a body of work. We finished the day hearing proposals for this year’s Community Change Initiatives. Bethany Berkeley, Dale Carnegie, Aaron Buffington, Microsoft, Alexis Schermer, Ronald McDonald House Charities, Megan Surdo, TMI Hospitality, Maggie Aslakson, Rasmussen College, Laura Caroon, Concordia College, and Dan Cash, Midwest Radio, presented their ideas for projects and groups were decided. We can’t wait to see what each group is able to accomplish!

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

“I started the company in 2005, along with my father, Ross Johnson. We started as an egress window contractor. After listening to homeowners, we wanted to be able to do more to help them. Eventually, we were approached by Basement Systems (and later Supportworks) and were welcomed to their international network of contractors. This gave us access to state-of-the-art basement, crawl space and foundation repair products. Being a single father, joining Basement Systems allowed me to get off the road and spend more time at home. Since then, Innovative Basement Systems has had the goal of providing unparalleled, excellent basement waterproofing, concrete lifting & leveling, foundation repair, egress and radon gas mitigation services, along with giving each & every customer a fantastic experience. We are redefining what the contractor experience is for homeowners.” —Keith Johnson, Owner

What makes your organization unique?

Our team. We take great pride in our team of active military personnel, veterans and non-veterans. I truly believe we have the most sincere and smartest people available in the industry.

Are there any initiatives you’re focusing on right now?

We are in the process of rebranding the company along with an increased focus to employ more veterans. As a service-disabled, veteran-owned small business, we want to help the brave individuals who have served our great country; it’s our small way of welcoming them home and into our innovative family.

What do you like best about doing business here?

It’s home. What better feeling than coming home—we live by that. Wet basements, bad foundations—they all cause stress and we want to take that stress away.

What is one thing you most want others to know about you? Bottom line is that we offer the best engineered and warrantied products and services, paired with unrivaled, smart, caring industry professionals. Our team will go above and beyond what is expected.

What do you like most about being a member of The Chamber? The level of credibility it brings.

MEMBER NEWS: COMPANIES For the fourth consecutive year, DFC Consultants has made the list of 50 Best Places to Work in the northern Plains, as listed in the September issue of Prairie Business. Earlier this year, employees across the region nominated companies by submitting an anonymous employee-satisfaction survey, and Prairie Business used the survey results in selecting the 50 Best. Not only was DFC Consultants listed as a Best Place to Work by Prairie Business; they were also listed in Inc’s Best Workplaces for 2017. DFC Consultants was also named a finalist for the Better Business Bureau of Minnesota and North Dakota (BBB) Torch Award for Ethics. The Torch Awards recognize worthy companies that strive to go above and beyond in their dealings with customers, employees, vendors and their community. DFC Consultants is the only finalist from North Dakota. Edward Jones was ranked the No. 3 Best Workplace for Women—highest in the financial-services industry—by Great Place to Work and FORTUNE magazine. The list of 100 companies considered more than 400,000 anonymous employee surveys from hundreds of businesses in all sectors of the economy. The ranking gauged women’s assessment of their organizations’ culture, leadership, fairness and other elements essential for a great workplace. Edward Jones recently launched a firmwide network for female financial advisors in a pledge to bring more women to the financial advisor role. The network, called WINGS—or Women’s Initiative for New Growth Strategies—offers tools, mentorship resources and coaching designed to strengthen and advance female career trajectories at the firm. Marco announced that it has purchased Koestner Office Products, Inc., a copier/printer company based in Jefferson City, Missouri. This is the 17th acquisition the company has completed over the past three years. In addition to Jefferson City, they have three other locations in Missouri.
