We’re excited to debut new program logos! LEADERSHIP FMWF
Starting in April, you may notice a new set of logos for some of The Chamber’s events and programs. Business Training, Eggs & Issues, Leadership, Women Connect and the Young Professionals Network all recently received a new look. These new logos are designed to mimic the main Chamber logo, but now gives each program a specific color and unique identity. Soon you’ll see them on all of our materials, including the website, social media and at events. The idea behind the change is to strengthen The Chamber’s overall look and brand as we evolve as an organization. We’ve got some other exciting things in the works, and we feel that new and distinct program logos are an important part of this work. We hope you like them, and stay tuned for what is still yet to come!

PRESIDENT
Looking at Legislation The legislative season has been interesting to say the least. Through our public affairs efforts, we have been keeping a close eye on what the Minnesota and North Dakota legislative bodies are working on. In North Dakota, revenue shortcomings are dictating the conversation. With major belt tightening underway, it seems everyone is feeling the effects. However there are certain areas that seem to be seeing devastating cuts. We are fortunate to have a strong higher education system in the North Dakota portion of the Red River Valley. North Dakota State University and North Dakota State College of Science are not only an integral part of the future of our workforce, but they are also some of the top regional employers. They are facing nearly 20% and 24%, respectively, budget reductions. This extreme of a cut causes organizations to not just tighten the belt but make decisions that may take years to recover from. The Chamber stands by our higher education institutions and
we our dedicated to supporting them far into the future. Minnesota is facing a different set of money issues as they evaluate priorities when it comes to their close to $1.4 billion surplus. Tax cuts for residents and business owners are a top priority with lawmakers. The historic Sunday liquor sales legislation was passed and will take effect on July 2, 2017. Another important piece of legislation, the REAL ID bill ended up failing in the Senate. Currently, Minnesota IDs will not be federally recognized and Minnesota residents will not be able to use them to board an airplane as soon as 2018. This is a hindrance to all Minnesotans. We are thankful to Representative Ben Lien, who voted in support of this bill and we hope this may be revisited before it is too late.
brief overview of the U.S. Chamber’s priorities in working with Congress members. Dedicated to regulatory reform, the U.S. Chamber has been urging congress members to streamline agency rulemaking and make it a more transparent and efficient process. We are thankful for the work they do advocating for business on the federal level. As we do every legislative year, we look forward to hosting our legislative wrap ups for Minnesota and North Dakota. I hope to see you there!
On March 15, we were able to host Ron Eidshaug, vice president of Congressional and public affairs for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce for a meeting. He was able to share a

North Dakota Legislative Wrap-up

LINDBERG
7:30 to 9 a.m. Courtyard by Marriott

The oil industry has become the largest part of North Dakota’s economy and contributes the greatest share of the state’s tax revenue. Its future affects investment, employment and public sector projects across the state. Where is it today and where is it going? Despite the downturn, there are many positive things happening in the Bakken. Current employment still exceeds 50,000 workers and some entities expect North Dakota production to grow to over 2 million barrels per day. Technology and communities are evolving, making the Bakken a better place to live and do business.
The 80 days of the North Dakota 65th Legislative Session has been nothing short of interesting. Budgetary times were uncertain, leaving many North Dakota citizens concerned. Our state has seen tremendous growth over the years as sales and use tax boomed with oil production and an influx of residents, but as markets change so too have the revenue dollars. Please join us to hear from legislators their thoughts of the session and what they hope to see moving forward.
Please join us to hear from Kathleen Neset, president of Neset Consulting Service, Inc., as she shares some of the newest technology being used in the Bakken that could have great impact on future development. Rob Lindberg, director and founder of Bakken Backers, will also join us to provide a clear view of what is happening in the Bakken and how its future will impact jobs and the state economy.

EGGS & ISSUES RECAP ‘Engagement’ Key to Addressing Opioid Epidemic March’s Eggs & Issues tackled a tough topic: the opioid and addiction crisis in the community. Panelists from the Mayor’s Blue Ribbon Commission on Addiction gathered to share their expert perspective and offer ideas for solutions. Panelists included Jessica Woitzel, Solid Comfort; Darrin Tonsfeldt, The Village Business Institute; Chris Myers, U.S. Attorney for the State of North Dakota; and Mary Beth Traynor. WDAY’s Kevin Wallevand moderated. Providing opening comments was Fargo City Commissioner John Strand, who shared some eye-opening statistics and background of the commission, whose core purpose is to “take back what addiction is stealing from us.”
8 THE BRIDGE ·APRIL 2017
How can business leaders in the community help? ‘Engagement’ was a key word echoed by many on the panel. “Engaging with your employees, with your bosses, with their families.” Employee assistance programs (EAPs) play a key role in engaging and offering early interventions. “Employers can have a big impact on the well-being of employees, and employees need to be aware of the services available to them,” Tonsfeldt said. Solid Comfort is an example of an area employer that gives opportunities to those with a criminal or addiction background. Woitzel has seen great success from it, as individuals coming to them with that background have something to prove.
Traynor then shared her own heartbreaking story of the loss of her son, Matthew, who struggled with addiction for over 10 years and offered an inside look at how addiction can affect an entire family. Before a round of questions and comments from the audience, West Fargo Mayor Rich Mattern provided a few closing remarks: “We are in this together. We will work together, and we will win this battle.”
Homes for Our Troops
MILITARY AFFAIRS The Chamber’s Military Affairs committee was honored to present a $5,000 donation to Homes for Our Troops, a veteran’s organization that is working with ISR Homes and Home Builders Care of Fargo Moorhead Foundation to build a new home for a local serviceman using funds from our Honor Star Program. Retired Master Sergeant Eric Marts was injured while serving in Iraq, causing him to have a traumatic brain injury and eventually resulting in complete blindness. He currently is living in a home that is not accessible for his needs. The new home will have features such as voice activated controls, a security system and a threshold shower with safety railings. Wider doors and hallways will also better accommodate Marts and his guide dog. Thanks to the Home Builders Association of Fargo-Moorhead for their work on the project!

VOLUNTEER Q & A Learn more about some of our dedicated committee members. These are just two of the many people who help us do all that we do. We thank them for their support and service.
LARRY OLSON President, Talent Productions Public Relations Ambassador
PATTY MASTEL
Finance Director, FM Area Foundation Chair, Public Relations Ambassadors
What do you do when you’re not working? I enjoy cooking and entertaining. I love live music and concerts. My husband and I have an empty nest, but we love spending time with our kids, their spouses, and of course our three grandkids. I love tropical vacations and fun road trips, and of course spending time with my friends. What is best about living and working in Fargo Moorhead West Fargo? The kindness of our community. I tend to take it for granted because I’m used to it, but when I travel to other parts of the country I notice the difference. What do you like most about being involved with The Chamber? Definitely all of the new businesses we as Ambassadors have the opportunity to visit and learn about. But my favorite is when an entrepreneur is having a grand opening. It is so exciting to see someone realize their dream of opening a business doing something they are passionate about. What is one thing you would like other people to know about your committee? Everybody takes their role seriously and does their best to support our business members by showing up at their celebrations! Our attendance and participation rate cannot be beat! What is the best professional advice you have ever received? I used to work for a very wise physician who told me that there is no such thing as an administrative emergency, the only true emergencies are medical.
10 THE BRIDGE ·APRIL 2017
What do you do when you’re not working? I enjoy spending family time with my wife Toshiko, our 5-year old daughter Serenity and our foster children. We especially like outdoor activities at parks or at our farm sledding, hiking, swimming and boating. I also like to cook, do carpentry and read for personal development. For 13 years, I volunteered as a chapel usher at Eventide and I am also a 20-gallon blood donor. What is best about living and working in the metro? I am thankful to be part of a caring community whose members have a heritage of family values that strive to enrich and enhance the lives of others. What do you like most about being involved with The Chamber? Being a “cheerleader” for The Chamber, its members and their organizations. It’s with The Chamber’s leadership and member involvement that our community continues to grow and thrive, faster and better. I have been an ambassador for 12 years and was named Ambassador of the Year in 2010. What is one thing you would like other people to know about your committee? It is a wonderful networking and public speaking opportunity (if you wish to emcee a ribbon cutting) where you can learn new information about our community organizations and share that information with others. What is the best professional advice you have ever received? Everyone is created as a unique embodiment and endowed with an inner voice. Spend time to discover and develop your uniqueness. Listen to your inner voice for guidance and to find your purpose. Use introspection to stay on or correct your course. Sometimes an avocation will turn into a vocation. When your best unique qualities are fully utilized in your chosen vocation, you will receive the greatest happiness. When you can combine a career with a heart of caring and living for the sake of others, you can find joy that is even more lasting.

The Art of Building and Maintaining Authentic Relationships
Tuesday, April 25 PHILLIPS
3:30 to 5 p.m. Sanctuary Events Center
What if there really were a secret to happiness well within our grasp? Perhaps there is! We often think of kindness as something that flows from our surplus: our extra time, extra energy or extra resources, leaving us to ask how we can possibly give to others when we don’t have enough for ourselves.
Tuesday, May 23 3:30 to 5 p.m. Sanctuary Events Center
In this presentation, Nicole Phillips explores the chain reaction that happens within our bodies when we lead with kindness. While it seems like it should be entirely altruistic, study after study proves that the greatest benefits of kindness are actually in store for the giver. We were created to be kind, but it’s awfully hard to find our stride in life when we refuse to step into our eternal purpose. At this session, you’ll learn that there is indeed much you can do to create light in a dark world while adding great joy to your own life. Phillips is a champion for using kindness to overcome all of life’s difficulties, including her own battle with breast cancer. She spreads the message of the healing power of kindness through her public speaking and weekly column, “Kindness is Contagious,” which runs in newspapers in North Dakota and Minnesota.

Building strong relationships takes an investment of time, mutual respect and genuine interest. Building positive workplace relationships is vital for career success and is very rewarding personally. Relationships can positively or negatively affect your satisfaction with your job and your ability to advance in your organization. An authentic relationship is based on respect and mutual trust. In the workplace, these qualities are essential for effective teamwork and collaboration. Come to this session to hear from Tonya Stende, president of Dale Carnegie Business Group of North Dakota and North West Minnesota, and Kristi Huber, president, United Way of Cass-Clay, and learn how to keep your interactions with others impactful, intentional and engaging.

Re-Recruiting Your Top Performers Wednesday, April 12
11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Ramada Plaza & Suites - soon to be Delta by Marriott We all know the importance of recruiting talented new employees to fill open positions in our organizations. But shouldn’t top-performing current employees get equal attention? Maybe it’s time your organization seriously considers a “re-recruitment” strategy. This is more than a focus on workplace culture or an occasional employee survey; it is a strategic process that keeps your best employees engaged and challenged so they stay at your organization. At this session, we will hear from a panel of area employers that already have effective re-recruitment practices and policies in place. We’ll learn what makes each of their strategies work, and help you identify an action plan that will succeed in your business. Panelists include Barb Belcher, vice president of human resources, YMCA of Cass and Clay Counties; Dawn Lahlum, president, Park Co. Realtors; Amber Unser, director of HR for Tecton and Integrity; and Rhonda Young, HR manager, Hornbacher’s. This training qualifies you for 2 CPE credits for the ND CPA Society.
Has your company considered hiring interns but you don’t know where to start? Have you used interns, but the experience was less than ideal? Do you have a successful internship program and would like to hear what other companies are doing? Current statistics indicate that nearly 75% of internships result in an offer for a full-time permanent position. Increasing the number of successful internships in the region is likely to have a positive impact on the number of local college and university students staying in the area after graduation. For employers looking for the best college-educated employees, an internship program may be the best way to build a pipeline of talented, young professionals. Businesses will be able to tap into the top creative talent with cuttingedge skills. Companies that develop a process to effectively manage interns also get more value from their program and do a better job of converting interns into full-time employees. At this training, a panel of professionals whose companies have successful internship programs will discuss: • Why their internship programs have been successful • Best practices for working with interns and what not to do • Tips to effectively manage interns • Advice for businesses that have struggled with internship programs or those that have never had interns Also hear from career development professionals from these local college and universities!

Our Community’s Hidden Gems
The Leadership Fargo Moorhead West Fargo participants hit the town last month for a tour of a few of our community’s hidden gems. Starting at the Fargo Jet Center, the class was not only able to see the inner workings of the facility, but were also able to gain a better understanding of Weather Modification, Inc’s mission and their positive impact that goes far beyond our region. After a delicious lunch served by the volunteers of the Sons of Norway (did we mention it was pie day?), we trekked across the river to Minnesota State University Moorhead’s Planetarium. Without having to even enter orbit, we took a trip to the moon and to the newly discovered TRAPPIST-1 system. Once we got back to planet earth, we headed over to the Red River S.W.A.T. facility where SWAT Commander, Lt. William Ahlfeldt, shared with the class just how important his team is to the residence of Fargo and the surrounding area. Once we wrapped up a quick tour of the armored vehicles and training space, we ventured to our final destination, the recently opened Bergseth Bros. Co. 2015 Leadership program graduate and general manager, Keith Bergseth, gave us a guided tour of the state of the art facility and shared with us the behind-the-scenes world of distribution.

New to YPN? Thinking about joining YPN? Then this event is for you. Connect with new and current members, learn more about the program and all the ways that you can be involved. We always make time to do some networking, so don’t forget your business cards. After, stick around for our monthly Off the Clock Social!
Your taxes are turned in, so come and celebrate your contribution to Uncle Sam with YPN! Join other young professionals at one of Fargo’s newest hotspots, the Front Street Taproom, where they have a commitment to support local small business with 30 craft beers that are all brewed in Minnesota and North Dakota. Complimentary appetizers will be provided but drinks are on your own.
In today’s fast-paced world of competitive workplaces and turbulent economic conditions, each of us is searching for effective tools that can help us to manage, adapt, and strike out ahead of the pack. Emotional Intelligence 2.0 delivers a step-by-step program for increasing your EQ via four, core EQ skills that enable you to achieve your fullest potential. At this event, Sara Madsen, collaboration specialist with Border States Electric, will walk us through your results and how to flex your skills to be successful in today’s workforce.
For the sixth year running, the YPN is hosting Pitch, Hit and Run, a free event that provides boys and girls the opportunity to work on skills in pitching, hitting and running through competitions, and we need your help! We are looking for volunteers to help register, run competitions and assist where needed. For more information, visit www.mlb.com/ phr and to sign up to volunteer, contact Sam at 218.359.0529 or sgust@fmwfchamber.com.

Element by Westin Fargo is an eco-friendly hotel that opened in West Fargo in March 2015. Learn a little more about what makes this hotel so special from its Director of Sales Morgan D. Hanson.
What makes your organization unique?
Element by Westin Fargo is a specialty select brand, but we pride ourselves on providing our guests with an experience that makes them leave feeling as though they’ve stayed at a full-service luxury hotel. Our environment is relaxing, fresh, clean and bright, and our guests often comment on how refreshed they feel after their stay. We also encourage our guests to be active and healthy during their stay and provide them with a 24-hour state of the art fitness center, bikes to borrow and a saline pool with a lap lane. Also, we give our guests a healthy start to their mornings with healthy breakfast options including fresh fruit smoothies, hard boiled eggs, yogurt and fruit - all complimentary! The design of our property is quite unique with the ecofriendly focus. Recycled materials have been thoughtfully used whenever possible in the design of the hotel and recycling receptacles can be found throughout the property.
Are there any initiatives you’re focusing on now?
Sustainability is a large part of our everyday ongoing initiative to be environmentally conscious and friendly. Glass dishes and cutlery, cleaning products, recycling receptacles etc., have all been carefully chosen to provide a truly green experience for our guests.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Please share more about what your organization does.
MinnKota EnviroServices, Inc. operates under three registered trade names. MinnKota Recycling operates public redemption centers and a sorting/ production facility to sort, package and market recyclables. MinnKota Secured Document Destruction is a National Association of Information Destruction, AAA certified plant and mobile provider for document and hard drive destruction. Recovered Material Management provides marketing and brokerage services to government and recycling organizations in North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota. MinnKota EnviroServices, Inc. was incorporated in December 2007. The business was founded in 1975 as part of Beverage Wholesalers, Inc.’s effort to recycle aluminum cans. It expanded to multiple commercial and residential material recycling in 1989 and document destruction in 1998. MinnKota’s corporate office and processing plant is located in Fargo, with public redemption centers in Fargo, Moorhead, Detroit Lakes and Grand Forks.
What makes your organization unique? MinnKota is not a solid waste collector or processor. All of our facilities and services are focused on reducing recyclables being lost to a landfill. In 2016, MinnKota Recycling shipped over 62 million pounds of recyclable material to mills across the U.S. to be used in the making of new products.
Are there any initiatives you’re focusing on right now?
The conversion of Fargo and Moorhead residential recycling collection programs to single stream, comingled recyclables, from the current source separated collection. We are working closely with the Recycling and Solid Waste Departments of both cities for transition later in 2017. Comingling of recyclables at the residential curb presents many new challenges for sorting and marketing of recyclables for eventual reuse.
What is one thing you most want others to know about you?
We help registered charities and other non-profit organizations raise donations by accepting recyclable materials on their behalf. Simply notify the attendant at any of our redemption center locations that you would like to donate the value of your recyclables to any one of the 200 registered organizations. We have paid out over $100,000 the past five years to local organizations.
What do you like most about being a member of The Chamber?
The ability to attend and participate in many Chamber events during the year such as Voices of Vision, State of the Cities, Economic Outlook Forum and Eggs & Issues.
