President's Corner Dear Chamber members, Every year at this time our fiscal year comes to a close and I am reminded once again of the successful year we at The Chamber enjoyed. It is a privilege to represent more than 2,100 businesses in this special and thriving community, and I hope each one of you knows how much we appreciate your membership in our organization. Our staff recently dissected the results of our annual membership satisfaction survey, and I’m pleased to report that the consensus among the respondents was that we are doing a pretty good job. We are humbled to see comments such as, “We have a strong, involved Chamber and their input and events promote a very positive impact on the region’s overall successful business environment,” and The Chamber is “one of the best avenues toward keeping informed of events and trends vital to business.” Thank you for your support of our efforts and recognition of all that we do to serve our members and keep our local economy strong. However, we would be remiss not to mention that we also received feedback about areas for improvement, such as reaching out to our small business members with more focused training and affordable marketing opportunities as well as more entrepreneur-focused programs and training. We take your feedback seriously. We wouldn’t ask for it if we didn’t want to know what we did well in the past year and how we can improve our events and programs in the future. The fiscal yearend is a prime opportunity to reflect on our successes but evaluate our shortcomings to determine how we can improve them. We want to see all our members benefit from being affiliated with The Chamber, because we are only as strong as the members we serve. Health Care and You: Summit Gives Attendees Resources, Ideas Betsy McCaughey roused the audience at the 2014 Health Care Summit by revealing little-known facts and figures about the Affordable Care Act (ACA) as well as citing specific sections of the law with critical ramifications. Nearly 300 people listened as McCaughey described the current law and highlighted ways health care legislation could be improved. Throughout the afternoon, attendees learned about how the health insurance industry is changing, ways to incorporate worksite wellness as a way to deal with rising health insurance costs and ACA compliance issues for both large and small businesses. “Everyone needs to understand that we’re all in this together,” said Pat Bellmore from Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota during a panel discussion about small businesses and the ACA. The event wrapped up with a discussion about the future of health care, the role of technology in delivering care and changes health care providers and partners are making to ensure quality care for patients.

Thank You to Our Outgoing Board Members The Fargo Moorhead West Fargo Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors serves as the governing body of the organization. The following individuals have reached their term limits: Renee Bourdeaux from North Dakota State University has served on the Board since 2009. During her time on the Board, she has served as the Young Professionals Network liaison as well as the Legacy Leader Task Force for several years. Wayne Bradley from Bradley Business Advisors has served on the Board since 2008. He served as chair in 2012-13 as well as the immediate past chair in 201314. He also served on the Legacy Leader Task Force for many years.
Sixteen individuals comprise the Fargo Moorhead West Fargo Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, and these individuals work for member firms in good standing with The Chamber. Directors are elected to serve a threeyear term and can serve two consecutive, full terms in office. To ensure equal representation for each community The Chamber serves, residency requirements have been included in the by-laws. Terms begin on September 1 to coincide with the start of The Chamber’s fiscal year. The Executive Committee consists of the following positions: Chair, Immediate Past Chair, Chair Elect, Treasurer, Secretary and Director-At-Large.

Home Run for Military Appreciation Night
Families enjoyed a pre-game picnic with a special ops course from Games Galore Party Rental along with pictures and autographs from players and Hawkeye. At the age of 90, Norm Felde bought his last baseball glove and figured it was his last time throwing a ball in a baseball stadium. The World War II veteran and Dragon Hall of Fame member took the field to kick off our largest Military Appreciation Night at the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. After throwing out the first pitch, he signed his new mitt and presented it to five-year-old Wyatt Clarke, a member of the North Dakota Air National Guard’s 2014 Family of the Year. Representing the significant role of the military spouse, Kelly Obach threw out a ceremonial first pitch before being surprised by a greeting on the digital video board by her husband, Mike Obach, currently stationed at Camp Lemonnier on the Horn of Africa as part of a Combined Joint Task Force of the U.S. African Command. This is his second deployment. Fans were also treated to a special event by witnessing 16 men and women pledge their commitment to service by raising their right hand and reciting the Oath of Enlistment and vowed to protect and defend our freedoms. The recruits were celebrated with a standing ovation.
I just wanted to say a very sincere thank you for the absolutely wonderful military appreciation event you put on at the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks game on July 8, 2014. M4’s, MRE’s, and Mortar Fire
Honor Star members spent a day with the Minnesota National Guard as they conducted their Annual Training at Camp Ripley. This day-long expedition was offered to Honor Star members at no cost to increase understanding and appreciation for the skill and commitment of our service members. Special thanks to Lt. Col. Jason Benson and Captain Peter Rampaart for the unforgettable experience.
Honor Star members take turns firing pneumatic M16A4 rifle simulators. These simulators are part of the Engagement Skills Trainer 2000, or EST2000, which enables soldiers to train on both basic and advanced marksmanship, on a variety of weapons systems, in an indoor or mobile platform.
Participants are briefed at the entrance to Camp Ripley’s Combined Arms Collective Training Facility. This multi-acre facility incorporates a variety of houses and buildings in order to replicate a small village, which can then be assaulted, patrolled, or defended, depending on the desired training.
Rampaart and members of the HHC 2-136 Infantry (CAB) Mortar Platoon give an overview of the 120mm Mortar Gun Tube mounted in an M1064 Mortar Track Carrier. Rampaart serves as the Moorhead-based 2-136 liaison to The Chamber’s Military Affairs committee.

Business Leaders Address MN Flood Issues
The Business Leaders for Permanent Flood Protection Task Force held its first meeting following the Authorization of the FM Diversion project and focused exclusively on the impact the project would have on Minnesota. Attendees include Moorhead Mayor Del Rae Williams, Council members Mari Daily, Nancy Otto, Heidi Durand, Brenda Elmer, Mike Hulett, Chuck Hendrickson and Steve Gehrtz; Clay County Commissioners Kevin Campbell, Jon Evert, Grant Weyland; and the three members of the Minnesota Legislature from District 4, Senator Kent Eken, Representatives Ben Lien and Paul Marquart. Numerous Minnesota business leaders talked about their support for the F-M Diversion project. The task force also received updates on Moorhead’s current flood protection levels, mitigation efforts and funding.
Public Service Commissioners Provide Update North Dakota Public Service Commissioners Brian Kalk and Julie Fedorchak sat down with a group of Chamber members to answer questions regarding current energy development and regulation. The commissioners discussed the new Enbridge pipeline, rail safety, wind development and ensuring reliable and affordable energy continues to be accessible to consumers.
No Action Taken on Measure 3 A measure that would change the North Dakota constitution and the governance structure will be posed to North Dakota voters in November. The measure, referred by the 63rd Legislative Assembly, proposes replacing the current eight-member, part-time board of education with a three-member, full-time commission. During the past several months, the Public Affairs committee received presentations from Shane Goettle, Odney Advertising, Senator Tim Flakoll from District 44 and Representative Al Carlson from District 41. The Chamber has not taken a position on the measure.

The City of Fargo “Fargo Project” has been selected as one of 55 recipients to receive a grant from ArtPlace America to support creative placemaking across the country. The $450,000 grant will implement World Commons Gardens – a master plan to transform Rabanus Park, an existing 18-acre storm water detention basin, into a multifunctional commons. Cornerstone Holding Company and Lakeside Bank Holding Company, New Town, recently announced a definitive merger agreement, which will take effect in late 2014 or early 2015, subject to regulatory approval. The merged entity will operate under the name Cornerstone Bank. This merger brings together the assets and expertise of two community-based financial institutions, allowing the new organization to provide a more expansive product offering to their customers while staying true to their mission of providing accessible financial know-how.
Enventis Corporation and Consolidated Communications Holdings, Inc., have approved a definitive agreement for Enventis to merge with Consolidated Communications. This agreement is an all-stock transaction in which Consolidated Communications will acquire 100 percent of Enventis’ 13.8 million (fully diluted) shares outstanding in a transaction valued at approximately $350 million. Dr. Augusto Alonto joined the Infectious Disease Department at Essentia Health. Alonto earned his medical degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine. Globe Remains Nimble in Changing Job Markets Dictionary.com defines nimble as quick and light in movement; moving with ease; agile; active; rapid or quick to understand, think, devise, etc. That’s exactly how Globe University defines itself.
As a private institution, Globe has the ability to quickly change programs and curriculum to fit the evolving needs of the business community. “We can be very nimble in terms of reacting to the market,” said Campus Director John Andrick. A good example is how the university is currently working on a way to train students in the mobile app development field. The process involves researching markets, working with businesses and experts in the industry and ensuring there will be job opportunities when new students graduate in two years. Globe also works closely with students to ensure they are prepared to start a career when they finish their program or degree. They believe an education should be more; it should be the building blocks to starting your career. “We want students to be prepared to be employees,” Andrick said. Depending on the program, students range from typical college age to older-than-average students who are looking to change careers. The unique student body helps prepare them for the working world. “Students interact with different generations like they will when they begin their careers,” said Babs Coler, community manager at Globe. Real-world experience is also an integral part of the journey at Globe. Students in massage therapy and veterinary technician programs are able to practice their skills in fully equipped classrooms on campus. Accounting and business students are required to do externships to help enforce the lessons they learn in the classroom and ensure students have the ability to enter the workforce upon graduation. “More than anything, we want people to know we’re here,” Andrick said. “We want to build partnerships with the business community.” When finding needs for education in the community, Globe can always use partners to help them determine where this is a missing link in education. Marco’s Fargo Office Nicknamed “Happy Town” For Positive Workplace Culture
Thirty-five employees comprise Marco’s Fargo office, and those 35 individuals are not only co-workers, they are friends as well. “We’re friends outside of work because we like to be around the people we work with,” said Tyler Ebnet, technology advisor at the 100 percent employee-owned company. Marco helps organizations manage their information through network expertise in voice, data, video, telecommunication and print solutions. The company earned the 2014 ChamberChoice Young Professionals Best Place to Work award in recognition of the outstanding culture the Fargo office has created. In Fargo, nearly 50 percent of the employees are young professionals. “Respect for our employees is very high,” said Jonathan Warrey, vice president of sales. “Our employees are proud to tell people they work at Marco.” That pride comes from a culture that supports leadership opportunities as well as community involvement, organizational characteristics that appeal to young professionals. “At Marco, we’re supported 100 percent when it comes to opportunities for growth,” said Megan Stoner, lead project manager. “I’ve never found that before at any other company. This is truly a place where everyone is heard, and we are trusted to make decisions in the environment we have control over. That’s important to me.” Another important aspect of the company’s culture that young professionals appreciate is flexibility and a hands-off approach to management. “We know we have the resources we can draw from at any time, but no one is looking over your shoulder,” said Jackie Meyer, technology advisor. As long as the work is getting done, managers don’t dictate if the work is happening at home or in the office.
Because Marco’s employees are friends, they have each other’s backs. Often in a big way. When an employee was diagnosed with cancer this past winter, Marco led the charge to organize a benefit to raise money to defray the family’s medical costs. Other professionals such as Bobbiann Froemke from Sundog and organizations in the community got involved, as well as several of Marco’s vendors. The Jason Boutwell Benefit Fundraiser in May drew more than 500 people to The Venue.
Marco’s consistent growth and expansion in the last five years — the company has tripled in both revenue and employees since 2009 — has resulted in young professionals having more opportunities to travel and possibly work at another location. Fargo is one of five regional offices, in addition to St. Cloud, Sioux Falls, Des Moines and the Twin Cities, and the company has 33 total offices. Marco has 750 employees and serves more than 18,000 clients throughout the upper Midwest and nationally. Marco’s growth also means employees have been sharing in the profits through the Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). Warrey said having an ESOP isn’t the best recruiting tool because young professionals are not usually thinking about retirement, but the ESOP makes an impact on retention once those employees begin seeing the stock value rise and their statement increase. “You keep good people with financial growth that they have a part in,” Warrey said. Marco has a transparent approach to sharing financial information which helps young professionals understand their impact on the company’s performance. Another philosophy supported by young business people is Marco’s commitment to contributing at least 5 percent of its annual profit to the communities they serve. “It was a good idea back in 1973 when our company was founded and continues to be a hallmark of our company as we grow and expand,” Warrey said. Growth can often result in muddled processes, but Marco has incorporated the principles of Lean manufacturing to keep processes efficient. Rapid improvement events (Kaizen events) bring together stakeholders from all departments in a multi-day session to map the current process, uncover alternatives and select the best process. That type of collaboration is appreciated by employees and the efficiency is appreciated by customers. “It goes back to our mission of being a growth-driven company providing technology services and being admired for our people and service,” Warrey said. Tom Thompson, employment placement services coordinator at the Vocational Technical Center, has served as the Public Relations committee chair since September 2013. What have you enjoyed most about serving as committee chair for the Public Relations Ambassadors committee? I have enjoyed developing the relationships I have with the other ambassadors both professionally and personally. The networking and fun we have during ribbon cuttings and the social events brings about a very tight group of professionals. What is one thing you would like other people to know about the public relations ambassadors? We are the first to represent The Chamber at their event so it is important to show your support for that business. Fargo, Moorhead and West Fargo are thriving communities, so the ambassadors make a considerable time commitment; in addition, employers make a significant commitment to support the employee by allowing them to take the time to attend events businesses have invited us to. We average approximately 60 Public Relations ambassadors, some in single roles as an ambassador and some in duel roles. This year we average 12 ribbon cuttings a month. What is the biggest benefit for a Chamber member holding a ribbon-cutting ceremony? The most common comment we hear from the Chamber member is “I didn’t realize there would be this many people here.” We average approximately 33 ambassadors per event, depending on the day and time. A ribbon-cutting event is a great opportunity to show off, explain what you do and hand out information to a large group of businesses.
