a note FROM THE
PRESIDENT Welcoming a few wonderful women
As our Chamber is in the final month of our current fiscal year, there are several things we have to look forward to in the months ahead. This time of year is when we typically book our Voices of Vision speaker, and it’s one of the most exciting announcements we make. We’ve had an incredible lineup of speakers at this event in the past. And now, we’re excited to announce that we’ve secured an accomplished and incredible woman for this year’s event. She’s making laps around the country, becoming a high-demand speaker, and we know she can fill Shaq’s big shoes from last year. It will be another incredible event.
September, all will be revealed.
Speaking of notable women, we have two more exciting announcements this month! First, we’re welcoming a best-selling author to the Women Connect stage in January. Perhaps you’ve heard of Rachel Hollis or her book, Girl, Wash Your Face? All I know is that my staff and our Women Connect committee is buzzing about her. Rachel has been taking the book lists and speaking circuit by storm, and we are so excited to bring her right here to Fargo. We’ll have more information about her talk soon. Mark your calendars for this one!
While I can’t tell you exactly who she is yet, I know that she is going to drive great inspiration, discussion and share
I’m sure you also noticed the woman on the cover of this month’s Bridge. Judy Lee is a familiar face for many around The Chamber and the community. Senator Lee has been an active and engaged member and is tireless and passionate about North Dakota and her district in West Fargo.
her powerful story with everyone in attendance. Stay tuned, because in
We’ve been watching her work for years, and this is the year we get to
honor her with The Chamber’s top award. I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this recognition as Judy. I hope you’ll join us at the Annual Meeting as we honor her legacy and present her this award. Of course there will be lots more coming up in this new fiscal year. We’ll have a few new faces joining our Board of Directors, new committee chairs and volunteers, more exciting events and programs and a renewed commitment to our members and community. Stay tuned folks!

Three years ago, they received a grant through Vitamin Angels that allowed them to make way for a new program that offers free vitamins to pregnant and nursing women. This helps support strong, healthy development during the critical early years.
MEMBER PROFILE
Many of us probably take food for granted without worrying about where our next meal will come from. But for those in different situations, the Emergency Food Pantry is there for those in need. It’s a small organization with only three employees, but about 140 volunteers, making a big difference. Founded in 1972 in a Moorhead basement, they know what it’s like to get through tough times. The idea of the Emergency Food Pantry was born in a college class, and came to fruition through the efforts of a college professor, Volunteers for Community Service, and the United Way. Ultimately, it became an independent entity relying on donations of food, dollars and volunteer time. Today, their main purpose is to provide a cart of food to those in need. But it’s not just food that they offer. You can also find them providing toilet paper, soap and diapers, and all with a high level of compassion. Three years ago, they received a grant through Vitamin Angels that allowed them to make way for a new program that offers free vitamins to pregnant and nursing women. This helps support strong, healthy development during the critical early years. The Emergency Food Pantry celebrated its 45th year of service in 2017. And, they’ve seen a 30% increase in the number of households served since 2013. They offer food baskets Monday through Friday. Each day they provide a cart of food to approximately 60 households. Each person that seeks food has a unique situation, but one common theme is their monthly bills are larger than their income. Many families come in when one small setback impacts their life. One recent family had one car and the parents worked opposite shifts in order to not have daycare. Living paycheck to paycheck, they often have tight months. Having to replace their car battery was enough of a crisis that they needed to choose between the car battery and food. The Emergency Food Pantry provided the family with a week’s worth of food to help them through their financial crisis.

EGGS & ISSUES Minnesota’s legislative outcomes: Eggs & Issues recap As Minnesota’s legislative session came to a close in May, we invited our local MN legislators to Eggs & Issues in July to share the outcomes and highlights. But first Jennifer Byers of the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce talked about the issues they followed and their reactions to the session. Working with a budget surplus and in Governor Mark Dayton’s last term, Byers said it was a mix of good outcomes with more work to be done. Some key legislation – primarily the tax and supplemental budget bills – were passed by the legislature but unfortunately vetoed by the governor. One area they were pleased to see move forward was health care price transparency. Senator Kent Eken from Minnesota’s 4th district expressed disappointment that one major goal of his from the bonding bill didn’t go through, which was a solid waste facility for Clay County that he says he will keep pushing on. Overall he said that more projects need funding than what they actually can fund,
creating a backlog of maintenance work needed. He suggested two separate bonding bills in the future that would allow for both new projects and maintaining current infrastructure. Representative Ben Lien representing District 4A called the session a mixed bag and said finishing on time was a welcome change. He thought the bonding bill funding was a highlight; called the pension bill a good win that was three years in the making; but said we’ve got to get a handle on health care. Representative Paul Marquart representing District 4B added that the one single best thing we can do right now for our economy and workforce is to merge our technical colleges back with our high schools. This, he says, will solve the job skills gap and incur less debt. All mentioned about the tax bill with varying perspectives. Afterward, audience members asked the panel questions ranging from Internet sales tax, the Diversion and child care.

The emerging post-boomer workforce is a topic on everyone’s minds. The great generational shift in leadership is here, but are we ready? Succession planning is vital, yet it typically lands lower on the priority list, if it makes the cut at all.
Is your organization achieving its most important goals? Nearly four out of five strategic implementations fail. It’s not the fault of the strategies themselves. It is that they do not get executed by the people within the organization.
Join us for this session to understand how to strategically navigate succession planning to ensure the values, culture and achievements of your organization will be sustained. You’ll hear how other companies are tackling the generational shift in manageable and innovative ways and walk away with practical tools and resources to ensure your organization’s post-boomer workforce is high performing and prepared to drive results.
The people on your team aren’t lazy or incompetent: they’re busy. In fact, they are so busy with the urgency of the dayto-day, that they struggle to find the time to execute on your organization’s most important goals. In this session, we will discuss proven execution principles that will help you transform your organization into a goal-crushing machine.

Minnesota State University Moorhead This presentation unpacks representations of female friendship and success in popular culture and the impact of these messages on our personal and professional relationships. At this session, we’ll confront the pressures and double standards that women face in the workplace and the sometimes-toxic relationship patterns we develop to cope. We will set out to develop healthier and more fulfilling relationships and learn simple ways women can raise one another up, plus strategies for effective communication and conflict resolution. Please consider bringing toothbrushes and toothpaste to donate to Youthworks Street Outreach Program.
Leadership occurs at all levels of an organization. This session will describe strategies used by highperforming leaders, illustrate the impact those strategies have on organizational culture, and show how you can move the needle. This session will give women the permission (and evidence) to support the talents and values they bring to the workplace as effective strategies to move the needle, and illustrate how they can support people and clear their calendars of many “box-checking” obligations. This isn’t a theoretical leadership discussion – the session will provide concrete examples of ways women can enjoy leading.

Mean Girls & Catfights:
2018 Judy Lee LEGACY LEADER:
We are thrilled to name local Senator Judy Lee the 2018 Legacy Leader award recipient. This prestigious award recognizes the important role and contributions of long-time local leaders in both shaping and serving the Chamber, metropolitan community and region. Lee’s involvement in North Dakota’s public policy and commitment to serving her district in West Fargo, are inspiring and impressive. Judy Lee was first elected to the ND Senate, representing District 13 in West Fargo, in 1994. She has served on the Senate Human Services committee since the 1995 session and has been chair since 2001. She has also been a member of the Political Subdivisions and Government & Veterans Affairs committees, as well as Health Services and Human Services committees. She was elected President Pro Tempore of the Senate in 2007. Senator Lee has been a member of the National Conference of State Legislatures Human Services committee for several years, including serving as chair. She is also involved in other national and local organizations and groups that focus on human services and health care, including Opioid Fellows and Reforming States Group.
14 THE BRIDGE · AUGUST 2018
Lee has also served on The Chamber’s board of directors and has been an active participant on various Chamber committees. She has been the recipient of numerous awards and recognition for her efforts, including the West Fargo Exchange Club’s Book of Golden Deeds in 2016 and the Golden Apple Award from the ND Council of Educational Leaders in 2015. She grew up in Grafton, North Dakota, and is a graduate of the University of North Dakota with a degree in medical technology. After 10 years of work in hospital and clinic labs, she began a 34year career in real estate and has continued to be very active on community boards and committees. Senator Lee and her late husband Duane have two children, Jon and his wife Billie Jean who live in Plano, Texas, and Maren and her husband Joe Matal and their children John, Elizabeth and Margaret.
Lee says she doesn’t have a motto, but shared this advice: • Work at something that is rewarding, and life will be fulfilling. • Worry is wasted emotion. If there is something that can be done, do it and move on. • Be a good listener; you might learn something. Always be interested in other people; ask questions to get to know them better. • Don’t be afraid to figuratively leap in the deep end and try something new. That’s how I ended up in the Senate!

Highlights from Military Appreciation Night We had an amazing eighth annual Military Appreciation Night in June at Newman Outdoor Field with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. This was our biggest year yet, and we are proud that with the help of our sponsors, we were able to treat over 1,000 service members and their families to an incredible evening of fun. We kicked the evening off with a picnic, inflatable games and photo opportunities with Hawkeye for military families. Legendary country singer Lee Greenwood performed various patriotic songs including the National Anthem on his saxophone. He also performed Proud to be an American as the U.S. Navy SEAL team of Patriot Parachuters put on an incredible show, descending into the stadium from the sky. It was a special night for 13 recruits representing two branches of the military as they took part in a swearing in ceremony. Jim Bastian, a U.S. Navy veteran who served in WWII, as well as Gabe Dohrmann, son of Major General Alan Dohrmann, North Dakota National Guard Adjutant General, threw out the first pitches. A special military family, Sam and Cody Cox, was surprised with a year’s worth of groceries courtesy of Hornbacher’s, Smithfield foods and the Happy Hooligans Foundation. We want to thank our Honor Star members, Military Affairs committee, all sponsors and attendees, for supporting this great event and coming out to celebrate our region’s military.
Frank Abagnale presents on “Stealing Your Life”
“Hackers do not cause breaches; people do!” Abagnale said. “Every breach happens because someone in a company or home does something they’re not supposed to, or doesn’t do something they were supposed to.”
On June 24, former con man turned FBI consultant, speaker, author and inspiration for the famed movie Catch Me If You Can, Frank Abagnale visited Fargo to present to an audience of about 1,000 people on how to protect themselves from fraud and scams. We were proud to host Abangale with the help and sponsorship of AARP North Dakota and their Fraud Watch Network. Abagnale captivated the audience with his tales of travel, forgery and deception, and ultimately arrest, extradition and time in prison. With billions of U.S. dollars being lost in white collar crime and advancements in technology, it’s more important than ever to stay vigilant. Check out all our tips, plus more photos from the event, on The Chamber blog. And for more information and resources on fraud and protection, visit abagnale.com.
Today’s technology makes it easier than ever for hackers to locate access points in your home or business and use social engineering to breach your information and start collecting. Never assume it can’t happen to you. But there are ways you can lessen your risk. Abagnale shared several tips, such as to never list your date or place of birth online, shred papers containing and monitor all your valuable information, and use credit cards instead of debit or checks. “It’s up to you to keep your information private,” Abagnale urged. “You’ve got to be proactive, not reactive. No one else can protect you.” It’s important for businesses to educate their employees on safety, set up protocols and minimize risk for the security of the entire company, too. “Education is the most important tool to fighting crime,” he said. “
Public Policy group talks Internet sales tax In July, The Chamber’s Public Policy committee meeting welcomed ND Tax Commissioner Ryan Rauschenberger who spoke on taxing Internet and catalog sales in response to a recent Supreme Court ruling. Rauschenberger spoke favorably about the ruling and believes it will be a benefit to local businesses and levels the playing field between online sales and brick-andmortar stores. City Commissioner Tony Grindberg also shared details of a new Special Assessment Fargo Taskforce, which he chairs. He voiced strong support for the Chamber’s recent position on the need to reform and carefully study the issue. He went on to dealing with a complex issue like this can’t be decided without careful consideration. 18 THE BRIDGE · AUGUST 2018

Founded in 1993 as InterceptEFT and celebrating their 25th anniversary this year, Kotapay became a division of First International Bank & Trust in April. The name “Kotapay” was chosen as a connection with the region as two successful companies based in North Dakota came together to become a widely recognized fintech company.
Kotapay offers electronic transaction services including direct deposit, consumer/corporate billing and credit card processing. They process over 40 million transactions annually and ensure those funds reach their intended destination. With Kotapay becoming a division of a bank means they are backed by the security and soundness of a regulated high-performing bank, giving customers more peace of mind. It allows for expansion of service offerings and creates a more streamlined and efficient operation.

What makes your organization unique? What we do is unique. We have 30 employees in the Kotapay division serving over 74,000 customers coast-to-coast. Our talented team of programmers and developers have created a multitude of programs. We don’t outsource for programs or software—we build our own— giving us the ability to create customizable features for our customers and our employees. Kotapay has created management tools that no one else in the industry is able to offer. What initiatives are you focusing on now? Our immediate focus is identifying synergies of the two organizations to create a more streamlined operation and the ability to offer more products and services to our customers. What do you like best about doing business here? The close-knit community of a small town, but also the benefits of big city life and the ability to find and hire hard working, Midwest employees. What is one thing you most want others to know? While we have customers coast-to-coast, we are still a local Fargo company. When you call, the phone is answered by our receptionist, not a machine. What’s your best business tip? Treat others the way you would like to be treated. What do you like most about being a member of The Chamber? The sense of community and support. — Connie Mosier, SVP Director of Kotapay

When I was in the process of coming up with a business idea, I knew that I wanted it to help the environment in some way and… that was it. While I struggled to think of ways to do this, it did make me hyperaware of any problems around me. This led me to stumble upon a lesser-known, sneaky problem that not just the Fargo Moorhead area faced, but the entire country. This was the problem of school milk cartons. In Fargo Public Schools alone, there are over 11,000 students enrolled. If just half of those students get a milk carton, that’s 5,500 cartons being

thrown away every day in just one city. Inspired by both my parents and an innumerable amount of Pinterest design boards, I decided to collect used cartons and turn them into eco-friendly plant pots. This would not only reduce negative impacts to the environment, but would also produce positive effects by promoting gardening and a healthier lifestyle. Since my time in YEA!, Ecopotz’s biggest step forward has been partnering with Baker Garden and Gift, located on University Drive, to have Ecopotz sold there. Ecopotz plans to continue making connections within the FMWF community and grow more awareness for its plant pots. I’m excited to see where Ecopotz will go and to explore the many ways Ecopotz can fulfill its mission: “Creating a healthier, more beautiful world, one carton at a time.” You can find out more about Ecopotz at ecopotz.com or on Instagram and Facebook (@ecopotz). — Joanna Lin, founder, Ecopotz 2017 YEA! graduate
