A NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Connection, options, adaptability & other lessons learned A year, an entire year of challenges and changes, successes and struggles have taught us all a lot of life lessons. One of the greatest for me has been the power of connection. I have always been a person that thrives from being surrounded by people, so this last year has been especially challenging. Even as you think about our organization, we exist to bring people together, to make connections, to convene leaders, so now that we are starting to see the sun on the horizon, we are excited about the remainder of 2021. I am so excited to announce that we are back, IN PERSON starting in April. Although we have been successful connecting people, executing events virtually, we are so looking forward to seeing your faces once again. When we announced that our April Business After Hours was going to be in-person, we immediately sold out the booths, which was the first indicator that you, our members, are ready. I also know that for some of you, you will need more time, and another one of the greatest lessons we have learned is that we will always need to provide options. Therefore, we are building options around our events, in-person and virtual options, so that you can engage with us in whatever way you want. Another lesson learned through the pandemic has been embracing adaptability. We have had events postponed, others cancelled, and even some new ones added. While we are committed to going back to in-person events soon, we may still need to make some pivots. But, we are so excited about welcoming you back to live monthly training events, including the Business Training, Eggs & Issues and Women Connect series, and the upcoming ChamberChoice Awards. As the past year has been full of uncertainty, we will take each situation as it happens, with the goal of being together again. The final “ah-ha” moment for me, as a newbie to this chamber, is the strong passion and dedication of our internal team and our volunteer leaders, as well as the significant influence of this organization. I have had the opportunity to be in St. Paul and Bismarck at the capitol numerous times this session. It is evident that The Chamber is highly respected by our elected officials and you, our members, trust us to advocate for these critical business and community issues. We take this responsibility very seriously, so please continue to engage with us, share with us your policy concerns and opportunities, and we will continue to partner with you to strengthen the overall region. Thank you for continuing to engage with us. I implore you to find one program, event, initiative of The Chamber that fuels your passion and get involved. We need you. The strength of The Chamber is because of the involvement of each of you.

Meet the board members
Kevin Christianson President, CEO and Founder of Christianson Companies
Year joined the board: 2018 Other Chamber Involvement: Christianson Companies has continued to be active and enjoy a number of Chamber events such as Business After Hours, golf outings, and other various events throughout the years
Please briefly share your professional experience and role now.
I have been active and working in the FMWF area since 1983. In 1993, I co-founded Christianson Companies, formerly known as PACES Lodging Corporation. I continue to serve as president and CEO of Christianson Companies and its related divisions. Originally, Christianson Companies was primarily a developer of hotel properties across the country, but since then has grown into the areas of land development, architecture/ construction management, commercial contracting, as well as providing a full service real estate sales, leasing, brokerage team known as Property Resources Group which was formed in 2001. Through our real estate development company, we have been fortunate to be involved in forming and operating over 150 different companies throughout the area. Every day it is a joy to help people find ways to make their dreams a reality, and I hope to continue that role for many years to come.
What do you like best about serving on The Chamber board? There are many different aspects I enjoy about serving on The Chamber Board, it is hard to single it down to one. It has been great to be informed, and to see firsthand what is going on in our community. In addition it has been wonderful getting to know a lot of the other great business leaders on the board and within The Chamber.
How else are you involved around the community? We enjoy contributing to a number of non-profits throughout the area in hopes of doing our part to better the community as a whole. In addition, we have been active members in the Home Builders Association for over 35 years.
What do you do for fun when you’re not working? I enjoy spending time at the lake with friends and family—especially my grandsons. In addition, I enjoy hunting, fishing, water sports and hiking across a variety of venues, and overall simply enjoying God’s creations.
What’s your best piece of advice for future leaders? Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither are future leaders. It is important to set a strong foundation by understanding your core values and skills, and in addition surround yourself with great people. When you take care of those around you, success will become a byproduct.

Please briefly share your professional experience.
I am an ER nurse by background. Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to serve as a leader in numerous settings including accreditation, regulatory services, infection control and ambulatory nursing. In 2017, I moved from Sioux Falls to Fargo to serve as the vice president of nursing. In 2019, I moved into the vice president of operations role.
What do you like best about serving on The Chamber board? Serving on the Chamber board has been a fabulous way to meet and interact with leaders across our community. It has been a great way to fully appreciate how amazing our community is and all that it has to offer.
How else are you involved around the community? I am on the board of Family Wellness and the American Red Cross. Additionally, I have served as a mentor and site director for BIO Girls.
What do you do for fun when you’re not working? Aside from any and all things fitness, I love spending time at the lake with my husband, two sons and our dogs.
What’s your best piece of advice for future leaders? Focus on work that you are passionate about. The opportunities will follow!

What would you like others to know about your committee? The Chamber Leadership FMWF committee is a diverse group of people who work tirelessly to come up with different ways to engage our class within the community. We are constantly working together to find something new, introduce an experience a member of the Leadership class would not normally be able to participate in, and we care deeply about the impact the class has on our community’s current and future leaders.
What do you like most about being involved with The Chamber? There is no question it is the relationships with the people. The Chamber provides a unique opportunity to meet people you would not normally meet, to jump outside your comfort zone and learn about other things happening in Fargo-Moorhead-West Fargo, the state of North Dakota, Minnesota and the businesses that make it all run. Without the partnerships and training The Chamber provides, our region would not be nearly what it is. I am proud to be leading a committee building a class of current and future leaders that have a thirst for knowledge about different facets of business and non-profits in the Red River Valley.
What is the best professional advice you have ever received? Never stop innovating. Throwing things against the wall and moving forward with the ones that stick are some of the most important lessons I have learned. In bad times innovation is a must, in good times it is fun and in great times it sends your business to a whole other level. NEVER, STOP, INNOVATING!
What do you do for fun when you’re not working? Every year on July 4th I build a Slip N Slide in our backyard and invite friends over to race. The first year was fun but in year two we added vegetable oil to the slide. This immediately killed the grass and ended my wife’s belief that the Slip N Slide was a good idea. I have since recovered and have gotten approval for a return to a 4th of July Slip N Slide (minus the vegetable oil in 2021). Just like everything in 2021, It is the year of returning to normal. Slip N Slide included! In all seriousness, I love football, white water rafting (fell into 32-degree glacial water for 20 minutes in Glacier National Park two years ago) and I love to travel with my amazing wife Kayla. You may know her as the person I know, which is the lovely woman that everyone asks when I meet them for the first time, “So, are you Kayla Cash’s husband?”

Please briefly describe what you do in your position. I oversee the operations of our Leadership programming, the Young Professionals Network and our annual Corporate Cup event. I work alongside around 50 different committee members to create beneficial programming for our members.
• I went to my first football game when I was 6 days old and have been a fan of the game ever since • My husband and I love to travel • I love theme parks, especially Disney World and Universal Studios
What do you love about your role? I have a passion for development of others and I love that I get to work in this space every day. I love each program for their own unique qualities, but at the end of the day, the goal is the same: to provide quality development events and an opportunity to grow your professional network. I get really excited about the impact the Leadership participants make in our community through their community change initiatives; it is so fun to watch those grow from a 300-word pitch to something that can have lasting change in our metro!
How else are you involved around the community? I have started to volunteer with Meals on Wheels and the Great Plains Food Bank. I am also involved as a volunteer with the Miss North Dakota organization locally, as well is in some other communities in the state. In addition to this, I volunteer with the North Dakota Association of Student Councils and Honor Societies state conventions twice a year! I am currently a member of the 2021 cohort of the Leadership North Dakota program.
Why would you recommend others get involved in The Chamber? Joining The Chamber is a great way to develop as a professional and grow your network. There are so many ways to get involved; The Chamber has something to fit all different interests. Whether it is getting involved with a committee, attending our events, or being involved with one of our great programs, involvement with The Chamber is a great decision!

Leadership class focuses on workforce & education March’s leadership session focused on education and workforce efforts. Shannon Full, The Chamber, spoke to the class about her passion for leadership workforce and took time to answer questions. Then, the class was joined by Karen Berntson and Karrissa Kjos, Junior Achievement, to talk about what JA does in our school system and the volunteer opportunities that exist. Amanda Even, Colleen Murray and Amy Feland, Lakes and Prairies Community Action Partnership, capped off the morning talking about CAPLP’s workforce efforts. Mitch Johnson, Wanzek Construction, followed up from his August communication training to help participants prepare for their Community Change Initiative presentations. The day ended touring the Tech Incubator at the NDSU Research & Technology Park with Brian Kalk. Stay tuned next month as we share each of this year’s Community Change Initiatives!

All about Leadership FMWF: The inside story The Chamber’s Leadership program has been in existence since 1989. When the Fargo and Moorhead Chambers were separate entities, they each had their own Leadership program until the merger created one Leadership program—the one you know today! Since the late 80s, the Leadership program has seen over 1,000 graduates, and has gone through many evolutions over the years. The program formerly strongly focused on skill development, touching on essential skills for leadership. Today, the program not only offers professional development opportunities, but also focuses on community exploration and understanding leadership by learning from community leaders that are brought into class. Group projects have always been a strong component of the program. What was once a project where groups partnered with non-profits has now evolved to participants identifying needs in the community that should be addressed and forming a project around addressing those needs. One thing that has always been a constant of the Leadership program is the focus on network development. Ask any graduate what their biggest takeaway is and they will say the network they were able to develop!

The village of Kindred was founded in 1880 and named after the owner of the townsite, William S. Kindred, who had purchased the land from the Northern Pacific Railroad. The railroad was built in 1880. Kindred was incorporated as a village on March 9, 1920, and became a city in 1949 when the mayor-council form of government was adopted. Kindred began as an agricultural community and that tradition continues today. While agriculture still plays a large part in Kindred’s economy and culture, the community continues to grow and expand in various sectors.
What kind of growth have you seen in your community? Kindred has experienced much growth in recent years. Kindred’s close proximity to the Fargo Moorhead West Fargo area has made it an enviable location—the small town feel everyone loves, yet still close to a vast network of employment opportunities. Kindred Public Schools is consistently one of the highest ranked school districts in the state. Due to the rapid consistent growth in recent years, a new high school was built in 2014 and initial planning is currently underway for possible construction of a new middle school.

In 2006, the state’s first and only Airpark housing development, Newport Ridge, was created in Kindred. Newport Ridge now boasts 70 homes (30 in the last three years alone) and is still growing, as new phases of development are continually being developed. Kindred’s business future looks bright! Kindred City Council recently adopted a Renaissance Development Zone. MLGC, a high-speed broadband, television, and phone services company, is expanding its presence in Kindred as well, not only in terms of services by offering 5 gig fiberoptic services, but physically too by relocating some of their warehouse and office spaces.
What makes your community unique? Kindred’s motto “where kindness is a way of life,” while perhaps not entirely unique to small-town North Dakota, is truly evident when visiting our town.
What issues are city leadership paying close attention to? City leaders are working hard to foresee growth and infrastructure needs. Kindred completed a new water tower project in 2019 and is currently overseeing the relocation and construction of a new wastewater treatment stabilization pond. City leaders are also focused on growing and strengthening the business footprint in Kindred. Kindred has had tremendous residential growth which city leaders hope will help to build on Kindred’s current business presence.
How do you partner with other communities? Kindred has a large school district, physically, which helps create kind of an extended small-town feel. Kindred is intertwined with its surrounding communities, such as Leonard, Walcott, and Davenport and provides an overlap of services, such as ambulance and fire services. Kindred most often, serves as a hub for school and summer activities.
What is one thing you most want others to know about your community? Kindred has ample resources to provide everything you expect in a small town and more. Kindred offers the staples–grocery store, restaurant, gas station, parks & recreation, numerous churches– but also provides some special extras. Kindred offers one of the best schools in the state and the town provides an overwhelming sense of community. We look out for each other in ways you don’t get in every community.
