DECEMBER 2020
Hello FMWF! A letter from your new Chamber president
Hello Fargo Moorhead West Fargo Chamber members! I am thrilled to begin my role as your new president and CEO. As I write this, my family and I have just moved to our new home in West Fargo and are settling in as we learn more about this dynamic community. We have felt welcomed from the start. In our time here so far, we have just begun discovering what makes up the fabric of this region. I am already energized by the vibrancy of this community, the opportunities for growth, the commitment of the leadership and Chamber team, and the tremendous foundation that has already been established. I look forward to building on this foundation. While I might be new to Fargo Moorhead West Fargo, I am not new to the work of a chamber. I have had the pleasure of leading chambers and economic development organizations for the last 20 years. I spent most of my career in the Midwest, most recently at the TwinWest Chamber of Commerce in Plymouth, Minnesota. It’s the third largest chamber in the Twin Cities, with 700 members, serving 10 suburban communities. Before that, I served as the president and CEO of the Fox Cities Chamber of Commerce in Appleton, Wisconsin. There, we had 1,500 member organizations serving a dozen contiguous communities. One of the reasons I was excited to come into this position was my experience representing multiple communities. I understand the importance of strong relationships and collaboration with elected officials, business leaders and member employees. I consider myself a pro-business advocate, and am passionate about workforce and economic development, strategic partnerships, special events, membership, inclusive strategies, and leadership development. I am no stranger to complex situations and developing solutionbased strategies. I believe that chambers should take risks, embrace change, and be bold in serving their communities. I’m excited to get to work, learn more about what we can do together in Fargo Moorhead West Fargo, and meet all of you. Happy holidays!

What do you love about your role?
Can you describe your role?
Can you describe your role?
I love connecting and learning about how our members work with each other and impact our community. Getting the opportunity to meet the individuals behind the businesses and hearing about their ‘why’ is so interesting and can be very rewarding! I really enjoy listening to people as they share about what they love to do, about a business they built, or worked hard to grow.
I have the privilege of working with the Ambassadors and overseeing the Public Relations and Member Relations committees. In addition, I coordinate the ribbon cutting and groundbreaking ceremonies.
I prospect constantly to find businesses that are not members of The Chamber and look for ways to entice them to become a member. Depending on the business, they might be more interested in certain benefits over others. My job is to connect those dots and not only get them to join and see what we have to offer, but to keep them engaged by purchasing advertising, presenting at one our events, volunteering on a committee, etc.
How else are you involved around the community? I enjoy supporting non-profits within the community such as the United Way and the YMCA. Why would you recommend businesses or professionals get involved in The Chamber? In a nutshell: We are better together and can drive more impact as a collective voice. I encourage individuals to have a voice on a committee, volunteer efforts, programs and during events to learn, share and grow. We seek to provide opportunities for advocacy of business, to educate owners and employees, as well as engagement with others. The Chamber team works to support the overall business community in Fargo Moorhead West Fargo, and believes that your success is our success and want to celebrate your impact!
What do you love about your role? I love that I get to connect with our members and gain a greater awareness of all the amazing things happening in the FMWF area. My role also allows me the opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments and milestones of our members. Having the support of all the ambassadors is a huge help for our team and members. Their combined strengths and experiences ensure that someone is always able to help. How else are you involved around the community? I volunteer with our church, and have fostered through a local dog rescue. I also enjoy watching my kids participate in taekwondo and dance. What are a few fun facts you can share about yourself? I have attended 535 ribbon cutting/ groundbreaking celebrations since starting in this role. I was a cosmetologist in my previous career. I have two wiener dogs named Baxter and Lebowski. My husband and I (mostly my husband) recently renovated our home.
How else are you involved around the community? I have been a volunteer with the United Way of Cass Clay since 2005. I have served as volunteer on the Marketing Committee, Employee Campaign Coordinator, and am currently on my seventh year serving on the Campaign Cabinet. I also served seven years on the American Advertising Federation of North Dakota’s Board of Directors and served as the club's president in 2012–13. What are a few fun facts you can share about yourself? I served as a Chamber Ambassador for almost 10 years before coming to work at The Chamber. I was named Ambassador of the Year in 2007. I had four internships while in college, one of those I was an on-air personality on Y-94’s morning show and was known as “Tracy the Intern." My dog and cat have their own Instagram hashtags! Give them a follow: #ChimichangatheChihuahuaFargo and #MorristheCatFargo.

Rasmussen University

Amy Gibson
Fargo Moorhead Campus Director
What is your vision for the future of your institution and how do you plan to get there? Effective October 2020, Rasmussen College became Rasmussen University, our institution’s next step toward a vibrant future. It illustrates our unwavering commitment to our students and the innovative educational practices we create to thrive in this time of unprecedented industrywide change. Rasmussen University will help define a new generation of higher education—one that focuses on competency-based education, technology and transferrable skills. Higher education continues to play a role in measuring and grading knowledge and skill development. Rasmussen University faculty have the additional knowledge and responsibility to assess the soft skills that will distinguish Rasmussen students as workforce ready. We are dedicated to global enrichment and meeting the evolving needs of our diverse communities through technology-driven education and modern workplace simulations.
10 THE BRIDGE
DECEMBER 2020
What successes and challenges have you faced in recent years?
What local partnerships and collaborations are you engaged in? Rasmussen University has various alliances and offers a generous corporate discount to area employers. Additionally, in 2019, the North Dakota Legislative Assembly passed a bill, creating a skilled workforce scholarship and student loan repayment program aimed at attracting people into high-need, emerging occupations in the state. The result is the ND Career Builders Scholarship & Loan Repayment program that we are proud to participate in (for more information: https://ndus.edu/career-builders/). The program targets the workforce needs of North Dakota with the goal of recruiting and retaining talent in skilled workforce jobs. Rasmussen is always willing to work with an employer or other organization on their specific needs. We welcome you to reach out to us.
When COVID-19 hit and colleges and universities across the country were shutting down and moving online, Rasmussen University, which includes the Fargo-Moorhead campus, was able to move online quickly and effectively. We were able to pivot in just a few weeks while continuing to provide a great experience for students. Our main goal was, and continues to be, keeping students on the path to graduation despite the obstacles presented. Additionally, the timeframe we were scheduled to host our visit by the Higher Learning Commission, a regional accreditation agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, just happened to be during the pandemic. Due to our strength in online learning and remote working, we were still able to host our visit and showcase our strengths during a difficult time. HLC shared it was impressed by the visit, and our HLC accreditation was reaffirmed for another 10 years.
AREA HIGHER EDUCATION
Tri-College University (TCU) Current enrollment: 35,000 students across five institutions
Tim Flakoll Provost
What makes your institution unique? Tri-College University (TCU) isn’t a place; it’s the name of the official partnership among the five higher education institutions in the Red River Valley region. TCU is a unique cooperative agreement between Concordia College, Minnesota State University Moorhead, North Dakota State University, Minnesota State Community and Technical College, and North Dakota State College of Science. The partnership has 35,000 full and part time students, placing it on par with a Big Ten campus. A student enrolled at one of the campuses can take classes at either of the other schools without paying extra tuition costs, and without going through additional admission procedures. We also share resources to gain efficiencies and improve the quality of education such as the library shuttle service, providing access to more than 2 million volumes/journals. The diversity of academic programs and campus environments across the five partner campuses ensure that there is a great fit for every individual. That provides the metro area more opportunities for hiring people that have an excellent education and training.
What is your vision for the future of your institution and how do you plan to get there? Tri-College needs to continue to be an organization that pulls together education, business and community leaders to better serve our students, faculty and people. Currently we are in the process of launching a 17,000 square foot shared medical simulation center with Sanford Health. Clearly this is a timely need that will be important forever. We are leaders in the Walk into My Future Program that exposes K-5th grade students to the campus experience.
What is your vision for the future of higher education? Education is our most vital tool for a strong economy. Higher education will continue to be the passport to a better future for individuals. We must continue to work to be nimble to meet the ever-changing needs of those we serve. There is no community, state or country that has a strong economy, without a strong system of education. North Dakota data from this spring showed that a person who did not graduate from high school was eight times more likely to be unemployed than a person who holds a bachelor’s degree or higher.
What successes and challenges have you faced in recent years? Tri-College is celebrating our 50th year this year, and each year has its unique challenges. Over the years, we have been a platform for launching many programs to benefit students on both sides of the river. One of our challenges this year has been working to launch the shared simulation center with Sanford during the challenging COVID months. This past summer, we officially added M State and NDSCS as full partners. That nearly doubled the number of students in the partnership. It will be an ongoing imperative that each of our five campuses are engaged so that they receive the full benefit of the Tri-College partnership.

University of Jamestown
Current enrollment: Over 1,200 students Brenda Kaspari
Director of Professional Studies, Asst. Professor of Leadership
The University of Jamestown, founded in 1883, offers a complete on-campus college experience for students that desire a traditional experience. In addition, the institution offers online and graduate programs to reach out to a wider student market. Both formats are based on small class sizes, personal service and personal helping relationships. In that realm and to meet the current challenges of affordability, access and relevance in higher education, in January 2021 the university will divide into two colleges: the Undergraduate College serving the traditional undergraduate college students, as well as the College of Graduate and Professional Studies, which will serve the needs of the adult learner or post-traditional students. Programs in this college include the Doctor of Physical Therapy program based in Fargo. In addition, UJ offers online graduate programs in Leadership, Counseling and Education as well as a variety of online undergraduate degree completion programs. Additional graduate and undergraduate programs are currently under development. The student enrollment of the University of Jamestown is currently over 1,200 students, the tuition for the traditional campus student including tuition, fees and room and board is $31,000 per year. All students receive an institutional financial aid package, making it a very affordable option for a quality, private, liberal arts education. UJ boasts a placement rate of 99%. Although these are very challenging times for all in higher education, UJ has taken every precaution recommended by the CDC and other health entities to continue to provide a safe and quality traditional on-campus experience for those students on our campus. For this, our students are very grateful. The move to a separate College for Graduate and Professional Studies is in response to the adult and post-traditional learner, which currently makes up well over half of all enrolled college students. Programs are designed to meet this students group needs in formats that integrate into the working adults’ responsibilities and lifestyles. UJ offers programs designed in conjunction with regional employers to meet the current and future needs of organizations. UJ partners with over 50 of the largest employers in the region to help identify needed programs for organizational growth and sustainability. In addition, UJ offers tuition discounts to our partner employees, making their education affordable.

What is your vision for the future of your institution and how do you plan to get there? Following the example of our founders and sponsors, the Benedictine Sisters of Annunciation Monastery, we dreamed boldly and stepped out in faith to create Vision 2030, a three-phase campaign: Education for Life. Following the close of Phase 1 in January 2019, we were able to announce that we not only met our goal of $96 million, but exceeded it by nearly $5 million! We plan to continue to pursue excellence in distinction, service and relationships through the Vision 2030 campaign and expand our growing academic programs, campus and impact on the state of North Dakota and beyond. All our vision and efforts in the Vision 2030 journey are focused on meeting the needs of our students, preparing them for servant leadership and encouraging them to be lifelong learners with moral courage.
• A new School of Engineering to serve the workforce needs of a thriving energy-producing region, offering degrees in civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering, computer science, and construction management • An 80,000-square-foot student center. One hundred percent of our graduates passed their NCLEXRN licensure exam on the first try. And we did it again! One hundred percent of our May 2020 cohort passed on their first try, which is a testament to our quality faculty who teach and mentor our students • The addition of Men’s and Women’s Golf to our robust athletic department, now competing in all 18 NCAA DII sports offered in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference

ASKING THE EXPERTS:
Moorhead’s Legislative Landscape Moorhead Mayor Johnathan Judd Minnesota’s fifth special legislative session concluded in mid-October with the passage of the bonding bill. We learned from Moorhead’s Mayor Johnathan Judd what projects will benefit the citizens of Moorhead. Tune in on January 14 for our State of the Cities event where mayor Judd will be joined by his colleagues leading the cities of Fargo, West Fargo, Dilworth and Horace.
What are some of the key projects that are included in the bonding bill? What other legislation has positively benefited Moorhead? When the Minnesota legislature convened for their fifth special session of 2020, passing a capital investment, bonding bill to finance capital improvements was a key priority. While unable to achieve this goal during its regular session, when concluded on October 15, 2020, the legislature had produced and passed the largest capital investment bill in the state’s history at $1.9 billion. Moorhead fared extremely well in the funding allocations, and I want to specifically thank our District 4 legislators, Senator Kent Eken and Representatives Ben Lien and Paul Marquart for their advocacy and leadership. Here are the significant projects that will benefit Moorhead and Clay County: • $62 million for a railroad underpass at 11th Street in Moorhead. o The final design work on the underpass will begin in 2021 with construction likely to begin in 2023. This will be a major transportation project and will be the largest in Moorhead’s history, topping the $48 million awarded for the Southeast Main | 20th Street | 21st Street underpass, which is currently under construction on the East side of Moorhead. • $17 million for statewide flood hazard mitigation. o The funds dedicated for statewide efforts are likely to include approximately $2.8 million for Moorhead flood projects, which are compatible with the FM Diversion. The funds directed to Moorhead will be used for strategic acquisitions needed for mitigation projects. • $7.5 million for a new Clay County solid waste transfer station and problem materials management facility.
As the 2021 Minnesota Legislative Session approaches, what are some of Moorhead’s top priorities? Looking ahead, the primary focus of the 2021 Minnesota Legislative Session will be to set the biennial budget, which includes addressing the projected budget shortfall. Cities across Minnesota, including Moorhead, will work to counter any threats that may exist to local government aid. Moorhead will pay particular attention to aspects of the Border City program, which is financed through state appropriations. Moorhead residents elected two new City Council members, First Ward Council Member Matt Gilbertson and Second Ward Council Member Laura Caroon, who will officially join the council in January. We look forward to including them as the City Council establishes Moorhead’s 2021 legislative agenda. We appreciate The Chamber and community interest in supporting legislative policies that will benefit our community and businesses.
o This project will provide for the safer and more efficient handling of solid waste in Moorhead and Clay County. The project is on deck for spring of 2021. • $5.345 million for the Moorhead Readiness Center (Armory) for the Minnesota National Guard. Additionally, an important pandemic response was the distribution of the federal CARES Act, which was passed through the legislature to our local units of government in June. We are extremely grateful for this resource and are proud that Moorhead and Clay County successfully implemented grant programs for local businesses affected by COVID-19. At the time of print, more than 200 Moorhead businesses received grants for COVID-19 impacts.

Bringing the Hallmark spirit to holiday giving this season By Patrick Kirby, Founder, Do Good Better Consulting
Traditions are a great way to ramp up excitement for the holiday season. Whether you choose setting up a tree, baking cookies or binge watching the Hallmark channel and their extensive collection of guy/gal-comes-back-to-small-town-and-findslove-with-person-they-knew-in-high-school movies, there is something about this time of year that feels wonderful.
COVID-19 has thrown a monkey wrench into traditional plans, and we, as a community, need to step up. Donating to non-profits is one of those end-of-year traditions that make this community so amazing. This year, however, is different. Currently, there is a sense of urgency, extensive need, and opportunity to make massive impact to organizations of all sizes with your generous gifts. COVID-19 has thrown a monkey wrench into traditional plans, and we, as a community, need to step up. So what would a Hallmark movie do in a situation we find ourselves in? First, establish a list of troubles that need to be overcome and set the table for the happiest possible end. And, look to your employees to find who and what they are passionate about. Then, you can be the star of your own feel-good Hallmark movie plot. Without non-profit groups serving our community, the responsibility of caring for others would fall on our collective shoulders. What an incredible opportunity for businesses and individuals alike to step up in a major way. Regardless of what size of involvement you invest in, know that it will be so incredibly appreciated. Cue the sappy music!
Giving back during the COVID-era holidays By John Fisher, Executive Director, Friends of the Children Fargo-Moorhead
The title of this article might conjure up diametrically opposed emotions. “COVID” may evoke anxiousness, fear and weariness, while “holidays” may elicit smiles, warmth and nostalgia. We are not the only ones to have these feelings. The “at-risk” community lives it right here in the FMWF area. These brave souls have daily struggles that, if you are like me, we have never experienced and cannot imagine. These folks rely on the reputable, effective and fabulous non-profits that with great passion meet them where they are to help, empower and uplift. How do we “give back” during the COVID-era holiday season? Before I answer this, I want to instill a sense of urgency in us all. The daily struggles of the people mentioned above have been exponentially exacerbated by COVID. The people that struggled for food and shelter still have those daily struggles but now they have even deeper economic, health and educational challenges. Non-profit organizations are doing everything they can to serve, but they need a community to rally around them and partner with them. How can you do this? 1. Advocate: Learn about a cause that gets you at the heart level, then speak about it. 2. Connect: Reach out to a non-profit organization that “gets you” or “fits you.” Tell them know you stand ready to help. 3. Give: Buy a couple gift cards to a local grocery store and give them to someone who could use a boost. Buy supplies, food and winter clothes and donate to a homeless shelter or food pantry. 4. Go: Drop off a care package at someone’s business or home. Stock shelves at a food pantry in the hours where there is little or no traffic. Have a virtual dinner with someone that could use some kinds words. Just because COVID has upended everything does not mean that a COVID-era holiday season needs to be any less giving! Creativity is the name of the game. I have supplied ideas and suggestions, now you can choose what fits you best.

MEMBER PROFILE BUSINESS OF THE YEAR:
BNG Team From the beginning, BNG Team has worked in credit card processing, striving to bring integrity to the industry by providing payment solutions to local businesses. That beginning was in 2007, when three friends at NDSU fell in love with the idea of being entrepreneurs and pursued this very business idea.
BNG Team believes in five principles that guide every decision they make. The values of integrity, excellence, ambition, creativity, happy and grateful, are used when evaluating leadership and employee performance, even potential partnerships.
The founders, Brady, Ryan and Tyler, decided to start their own payment processing business after learning that other companies operated with unfair practices like overcharging. Their start began in a basement and eventually grew into a flourishing, multi-faceted company.
The company has become known for its culture, offering a fun workspace, and investing in their employees.
Today, BNG Team services over 8,000 customers nationally and continues to rank on the Inc. 5000 list of fastest-growing companies in North Dakota. Their staff has nearly tripled, from 36 employees in 2017 to 150 currently. They have expanded into new industries too, including marketing and web design, promotional materials, point-ofsale systems, personal and business insurance, managed services, as well as software-as-a-service. But their mission remains focused on providing services that enable businesses to be the heroes in their markets. Their dedication to innovation makes them a stand out, landing the business on numerous award lists over their 13 years, including several from industry associations, and was the only North Dakota business to land on the Inc. 5000 list of Best Places to Work in 2019. 30 THE BRIDGE

In-house programs include Manager Leadership Training every month, Personal Development Plans, mentorship, and their BNGrow program. They also have hired a Dream Manager to help coach employees on how to dream big and envision their future. Putting the needs of their team first has worked. Employee satisfaction ranks in the top 10th percentile across many dimensions, as measured by an independent third party. Leadership also believes in giving back to their community. CEO, Brady Nash, invests in the work of several local and international non-profits. For the last three years, BNG has won United Way’s Most Creative Campaign award for fundraising. Their own philanthropic program, BNGive, is made up of volunteers who donate their time to local charities. For Giving Hearts Day, the whole company worked with Unseen to “Keep the Light On” for victims of human trafficking and they created a scholarship to assist those pursuing professional success. This creative and generous organization is always looking for new ways to provide value to those they serve.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
Make-A-Wish® North Dakota creates life-changing wishes to children ages 2 ½ to 18 battling critical medical conditions. A wish experience is more than just a nice moment in time; it is a family and a transformation. Over the last 35 years, our local chapter has granted the wishes of more than 950 children across the state. It is estimated that 50 North Dakota children are diagnosed each year with a condition qualifying them for Make-A-Wish. It is our vision to grant the wish of every one of those children.
—Billi Jo Zielinski, President and CEO, Make-A-Wish North Dakota What makes your organization unique?
What are you focusing on right now?
We are part of the world’s largest and most well-known wish granting organization. A wish from Make-A-Wish is like no other. As well as serving our wish children and their families, we also collaborate with a network of other people, businesses and organizations dedicated to our community. Our mission is fulfilled through our small and mighty staff working with a team of volunteers at the local level. We also partner with referral sources, such as local medical professionals and other child-focused non-profits like Ronald McDonald House Charities. Businesses from retail to roofing, and the employees who power them, invest through us to impact the children we are privileged to serve.
2020 has been a year of change, a year of reflection, a year of resilience. A year of relying on new ways to connect. Through it all, it’s been about family. This December, we invite The Chamber community to celebrate the holiday season with their families by raising funds to help wish families. Together, we can bring joy back into a family’s life so they can look forward to tomorrow. Start a fundraiser today by contacting us at 701.280.9474. Every dollar raised matters to North Dakota wish kids.

DECEMBER 2020
How have you been affected by COVID-19? Now more than ever, hope is essential. And hope is something Make-A-Wish exemplifies. We remain relentless in our commitment to the children we serve. Our wish kids and alumni represent some of the most vulnerable of our population, so we are doing all we can to protect and encourage them during this time. While we do not want any child to unnecessarily wait even a day, travel and wishes involving large-scale gatherings remain postponed temporarily out of caution for the health and safety of our wish families. However, through virtual wish discovery, we are STILL making wishes come true—wishes like Amelia’s wish for a girls shopping spree and Dexter’s wish to be an Army man.
What do you like best about doing business here? The Fargo Moorhead West Fargo community is a learning legion! We are proud to be a Chamber member and to be on the journey with the business community through the new Building Inclusive and Equitable Workplaces series. This work is very important to us in the area of people practices, wishes and board development.
What is one thing you most want others to know? An important clarification is that wish kids are not necessarily terminal. It is not always their last dying wish. The misconception exists because it was true for a few years immediately after the organization’s founding. However, the eligibility criteria expanded many years ago as medicine has improved—allowing doctors to use the wish as an important part of the medical treatment and healing process. Hope is good medicine.
