A NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT

What the military means to me Dear members, I am so grateful that our focus of this month’s Bridge is dedicated to our military. I was raised to have a great appreciation for those men and women who served in the past and continue to serve to protect our freedom and our liberties. My grandfather served in WWII on a transport ship shuttling supplies back and forth from the U.S. to Europe, and his brother served in the Normandy invasion. I remember so many stories that they would tell us about extreme conditions, moments of terror and devastating loss, and yet they would say that they would do it all over again. Following them were four of my uncles who served, and now three of my cousins. The stories are different now, but just as significant. The wars of today are in many ways much more difficult because the enemies, the methods of attack, and the warfare is very advanced, hidden, technical and devastating. Nevertheless, we have thousands of men and women who courageously volunteer to fight for our honor. They put their lives on the line and risk not coming back to their family all for us. We are so blessed to not only live in a country with dedicated people like these, but we have the good fortune of having so many of these brave souls here in our community. My husband and I have taught our children (ages 5 and 8) that whenever they see someone in uniform to thank them for their service, because we know that we are able to be together as a family because they are making the sacrifice that often takes them away from theirs. I want to thank you, too—if you are a service member that is serving or has served for us, thank you. If you are a company that supports our military like our Honor Star program, thank you. If you are a non-profit whose mission is to aid the service members and families of service members, thank you. Finally, if you are citizen that isn’t afraid to stand alongside our military and support them, thank you. Please enjoy this edition of The Bridge, and I encourage you to come out and join us as we celebrate our military and continue to support them throughout the year. Sincerely,

Shannon Full

CHAMBER FACES

Meet a board member

Meet a committee chair

Peter Stenehjem

Brian Shawn

President, First International Bank & Trust

On-Air Announcer, Midco Sports Network Military Affairs committee chair

Year joined the board: 2019 Other Chamber Involvement: Fueling Our Future

Other Chamber Involvement: Chamber CEO Search Committee and former Ambassador - Public Relations

Please briefly share your professional experience.

As a fourth-generation community banker, I’ve been working at First International Bank & Trust for two decades. I started as a teller in my hometown and our bank’s flagship location, Watford City. Throughout the years, I’ve worked in various roles and departments ranging from credit review to commercial banking. I currently serve as a director of Watford City Bancshares, Inc., and a member of First International Bank & Trust’s Board of Directors and the Strategic Planning Committee. I’m also involved in several entrepreneurial ventures.

What do you like best about serving on The Chamber board?

Being a Chamber board member is a great honor and responsibility. I most enjoy playing a role in setting initiatives and lobbying for legislation that will impact our broader community. Our Chamber board and members generate great ideas and vision for the future, and I like helping evolve those concepts and bringing about meaningful change that will set community businesses and residents up for success.

How else are you involved around the community?

I am on the Fargo Region Sanford Health Medical Board of Directors and the Dakota Medical Foundation Governance Committee. I’ve co-chaired the UND Game Day Experience Committee and served on the Sanford Health Foundation committee. I hold a professional membership with Independent Community Bankers of America as a Certified Commercial Lender. I’m also involved with Habitat for Humanity, Great Plains Food Bank, United Way, and the Salvation Army.

What do you do for fun when you’re not working?

I try to embrace each season we have in the Midwest. Summers are saved for time at the lake and getting on the golf course as much as possible. Whereas for winters, I enjoy downhill skiing and playing hockey. I’m “Dad” to two young children who keep my wife Stacey and I entertained every day.

What’s your best piece of advice for future leaders?

Be thoughtful in delegation and honest about motivations. As a leader, I try to understand the roles and responsibilities of my employees. I never want to ask them to do something I wouldn’t be willing to do myself. Honesty is the foundation of effective work culture. If you’re honest as a leader, others will be honest with you. 6  THE BRIDGE

May 2021

What would you like others to know about your committee?

The Military Affairs committee plays a vital role of bringing the business community together with the men and women serving in the armed forces, whether it be full-time or in part-time roles with National Guard. Many that serve are employed by our local businesses, and it is important for our committee to advocate and support them by sharing information and bringing all organizations and partners together. Many men and women give of their time and talents to keep our community and many others around the world safe from harm. These branches also make a significant economic impact to Fargo Moorhead West Fargo and bring great pride to our region with their exemplary service.

What do you like most about being involved with The Chamber?

The Chamber provides tremendous opportunities for growth, collaboration and planning for our future. I am very fortunate to work with and serve with so many great leaders that want to see our business community grow and move forward. I consider myself very lucky to have worked with many different men and women in various capacities that have made me a better person thanks to my involvement with The Chamber.

What is the best professional advice you have ever received?

People may not always remember what you say, but they will remember how you make them feel. Just be a good person! And a goal without an action plan is nothing but a daydream.

What do you do for fun when you’re not working? I’m actually having a lot of fun while I’m working. I mean, I get paid to talk about sports! I love to travel to new places, spend time with my family, go for hikes and bike rides, and eat out at different restaurants.

MILITARY APPRECIATION

Meet the new Happy Hooligans Commander Colonel Mitch Johnson 119th Wing Commander ND Air National Guard

Col Johnson accepts the 119th Wing unit flag, symbolizing his assumption of command, from Maj Gen Al Dohrmann, ND adjutant general, during a change of command ceremony on March 6.

What experiences led you to your new role at the 119th Wing?

What value does the NDANG base bring to our community?

My military career began when I commissioned into the U.S. Air Force in 1997. I served in an array of roles in various flying assignments while on active duty, to include multiple deployments piloting AC-130 aircraft supporting overseas combat operations. I became a Happy Hooligan in 2009, and as a member the 119th Operations Group, I’ve piloted the C-21, MQ-1 and MQ-9 aircraft. Additionally, I’ve commanded at the squadron and group level. Prior to my current assignment, I served as the 119th Wing vice commander.

The 119th’s annual economic impact to the region is nearly $100 million. The North Dakota Air National Guard supports over 400 full-time-equivalent jobs, which contributes to over $600,000 in property and local sales tax collections. Additionally, the nearly 1,200 unit members directly spend over $50 million annually in the FMWF area. Steady growth at the wing—a $7.3 million intelligence building constructed in 2017 and the previously mentioned consolidated operations building to be constructed later this year—will serve to provide sustained, longterm positive economic impacts to our local area.

What initiatives or projects do you have in the works that you can share? The 119th Wing is poised to sustain its 24/7/365 support to combat operations while continuing to advance intelligence missions and execute global expeditionary support capabilities. Additionally, construction on a $17.5 million consolidated operations building is scheduled to begin later this year.

What do you most want others to know about the work and mission of the NDANG? The 119th Wing is a trailblazing unit in the Air National Guard, and continues to push innovative boundaries, achieving excellence through what we call “The Hooligan Way,” and is extremely relevant in all its mission sets.

The Air Guard has much to offer:

Upcoming military events

MILITARY APPRECIATION

Who is ESGR?

Congrats David Johnston, ESGR James M. Roche Spirit of Volunteerism Award David (Dave) Johnston, a member of our Military Affairs committee, was awarded the James M. Roche Spirit of Volunteerism Award for his many years of dedicated service to the ESGR. This award is presented to a volunteer who has demonstrated sustained quality service as an ESGR volunteer over a substantial number of years. The award recognizes a volunteer’s patriotism, good citizenship and public service, at times achieved through great personal sacrifice. This award is the highest award given by ESGR to a state committee volunteer. Dave currently serves as State Vice-Chair of the North Dakota ESGR Committee and is in his fourth year serving in that capacity. He’s been an ESGR volunteer for over 17 years, and also serves as Co-Chair of the Fargo Region ESGR Committee and on the Governor’s Military Task Force. “David Johnston is the most dedicated volunteer that I can remember working with after having been involved in numerous volunteer organizations over my 40 years of being a business professional,” said Delton Steele, State Chair of the North Dakota ESGR Committee. “If you want something done, done correctly, professionally, and on time, David Johnston is your volunteer. He goes about his volunteer work in the most humble way and is always the first to recognize those who work with him and deflects any credit for success from himself to others.”

12  THE BRIDGE

May 2021

ESGR, a Department of Defense program, was established in 1972 to promote cooperation and understanding between National Guard and Reserve Service members and their civilian employers and to assist in the resolution of conflicts arising from an employee’s military commitment. ESGR stands for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve.

ESGR is supported by a network of more than 3,600 volunteers in 54 committees located across all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Volunteers, coming from small business and industry, government, education and prior military service, bring a vast wealth of experience to assist in serving employers, service members and their families. They work to promote and enhance employer support for military service in the Guard and Reserve. ESGR has served our country for more than 45 years, fostering a culture in which all employers support and value the employment and military service of members of the National Guard and Reserve in the United States. These citizen warriors could not defend and protect us at home and abroad

without your continued promise of meaningful civilian employment for themselves and their families. ESGR has continued to adapt to meet the needs of Guard and Reserve members, their families, and America’s employers by joining forces with a network of other national, state and local government and professional trade organizations. Together, We All Serve! There will continue to be a high demand for Guard and Reserve service members. Throughout the year, the Guard and Reserve have from 38,000 to 40,000 members on orders at any one time. Our local Guard and reserve units provide unique opportunities for our men and women to benefit from financial assistance in their education, to develop their professional skills, to provide for their families and to support their communities as a whole, often while remaining stationed locally. So cheer them on, appreciate the support of the service members and their families, and encourage local employers to hire and support these brave men and women. Because, in the end, we all serve. For more information on ESGR, visit esgr.mil.

Fargo National Cemetery: Dedicated to honoring veterans Did you know that Fargo is home to a national cemetery? And, it’s a pretty big deal to have a site in a community such as ours. The Fargo National Cemetery (which technically is located in Harwood, ND) was part of the National Cemetery Administration’s rural burial initiative program, which created cemetery access for smaller communities of veterans than had typically been served in the past. Fargo was one of eight new rural cemeteries planned to serve veterans in states where there were no open national cemeteries. Another reason our region was attractive because there are many veteran support groups here, including the Fargo VA, Department of Veteran Affairs medical center and regional offices, disabled veteran organizations, American Legions and VFWs.The cemetery’s dedication ceremony took place in September 2019, and the site opened with its first burial in October 2019. It takes up 4.8 acres, with 3,111 gravesites currently. Eventually, the cemetery will house between 6,000 and 8,000 graves as it expands to future phases.

“Our whole purpose is to honor veterans and their families for the service and dedication they provided to our country,” Robert Roeser, administrative officer for Fort Snelling Cemetery Complex, explained. Going back to Abraham Lincoln’s Second Inaugural address, the NCA promises to care for those

who have “borne the battle.” This includes providing dignified burial spots, a marker and perpetual care of the grounds at no cost to the veterans or families. A Fargo National Cemetery volunteer committee offers a chance for individuals to get involved in the cemetery’s work and honor veterans. One of their key roles is to put on events such as the Memorial Day program. While last year’s event was virtual, Roeser said that Fargo put on one of the best programs throughout the entire NCA. Brandy Pyle, a state representative, heads the committee.

the community to support veterans, and this committee exemplifies exactly what we’re trying to do.” A lot of communities have private veterans cemeteries, but this one is different, Roeser maintains. “We consider our headstones and markers monuments, not unlike the national monuments in Washington, D.C., and held to standards that are very high,” he said. “We are always going to have a clean, crisp, honorable cemetery, and it will be like that forever.” Jennifer Lieder, cemetery manager, added that she is excited to join the staff locally and is honored to see the level of respect everyone has for the hallowed grounds at the cemetery. Future plans include the construction of a permanent restroom and a windbreak to protect visitors, which is expected to begin next year.

While everyone is hoping for an in-person Memorial Day service this year, the Fargo National Cemetery team is planning a virtual program as well just in case. Roeser said that, “We always want a live event; we want people to come out here and see the cemetery and participate in a live event with speakers talking about what the day means, which is really all about the ultimate sacrifice.”

To stay up to date on the cemetery and its events, follow along at facebook.com/ fargonationalcemeterycommittee.

Roeser shared the overwhelming response and support that was received when forming the committee initially. “We have a great cross-sect of veterans and nonveterans, and it really is supposed to be community driven. We want

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT she was one of four who talked to the women there, taught basic hygiene, and started a chicken project (yes, literal chickens!). Monson spent time showing the Afghani women how to raise and care for the birds in order to sell the eggs.

From Kosovo to Keto:

The story of Amy Monson’s many missions From the moment Amy Monson attended her cousin’s wedding in sixth grade, she knew she found her calling to serve. The allure of the uniform led her to a 20-year career in the military, fueled by an interest in agriculture and followed by the launch of a business where she now serves a new crowd, coaching people who need help reaching their health goals. From humble beginnings to a desire to serve

Three tours, tea, and some chickens

Monson grew up in a small farming community in rural Minnesota, and it was the Army that caught her eye from a young age. Before she was even eligible to enlist, she took the ASVAB (a military aptitude test given at schools) and qualified as a medic. Monson remembers when the Army recruiter came to talk to her parents. “My parents didn’t say a word; I asked all the questions,” she recalled. “He asked for a glass of water because no one had asked him that many questions before!”

Monson’s first deployment was to Kosovo for one year, followed by a 22-month tour in Iraq where she was a medic and surgical tech in the busiest combat hospital in the theater. Feeling fatigued from combat, Monson switched to civil affairs and taught first aid to locals. She ended up spending time with the women in Iraq, trading tea for intel—an experience she calls life-saving for her mental health.

When she turned 18, it was finally time to begin her service. For the rest of high school, she did drill on the weekends and was in the 682nd combat engineers in Willmar. The next summer was basic training in Fort Jackson, N.C., then AIT in Fort Sam Houston. Then, it was time to make it real. 14  THE BRIDGE

May 2021

Then, she took some time off—but didn’t stay away long. She took a job with the MN National Guard’s family program, a component of Beyond the Yellow Ribbon, working with families of deployed or reintegrating service members. In 2011, Monson was deployed to Afghanistan with the agriculture development team. She was one of 12 from Minnesota who went to help the locals with sustainable ag, including how and when to plant crops. She was also on the female engagement team, where

Back to school and finding her family A lifelong learner, Monson wanted to continue her education, so she used the money earned from her service to enroll at NDSU. So, still in Afghanistan, she attended the first semester’s classes online while actively deployed. It paid off, too, as she graduated in person with a bachelor’s in general agriculture. That’s not all. In the final semester of her studies, she and her husband adopted three children. And it didn’t stop there! Monson used the remainder of her military-earned money for school to pursue a master’s in education, graduating in 2017. Monson retired from the military as an E-7 (the ranking of Sergeant First Class) in 2018 after two full decades of service.

The launch of Mission: Keto The same year her service ended, Monson began her next chapter. It started with the desire to tackle her struggle with weight and low energy levels. When she tried the ketogenic diet for herself, she found that not only did it work, but it didn’t even feel like a diet. She used a coach to get started on her own health journey, then became a certified coach to inspire and serve others to do the same.

Monson calls her approach a strict one. “I teach people how to eat real food and get the processed stuff out,” she said. “It connects with my education and ag background because it’s farm to fork. I took a love of food, eating and keto, and wrapped it into one business.”

“My military experience inspired my interest in ag, and my ag experience inspired my business”. When it comes to her coaching, Monson has a black-and-white attitude. “People come to me because they need accountability. They need someone to give it to them straight. That’s probably why I have the retention I do.” The one thing the military didn’t prepare her for? Asking why. Monson has learned to cultivate her own mindset training to see both the bigger picture and the reason behind the details. So what on earth could be next for this ambitious gogetter? Monson is looking to expand and add new programs to address food addiction and understanding our brain’s chemicals. No matter what field Monson finds herself in, it’s clear that she can always be found in service of others.

POLICE AND LAW ENFORCEMENT INTERACTION EDUCATION

Kellie Daley, Trevor Deyo, Alex Kizima, Ashley Parsons, Morgan Sabbe

After listening to the struggles within the New American community, the New American Community Connection CCI group found a gap between services provided to New Americans and FM area businesses. The group set out to connect the two communities, bring awareness to these new members and establish better relations by hosting an event on April 1. The event consisted of businesses, non-profits and community resources to learn from a panel of six individuals involved in these communities. Two panelists shared their passion for helping New Americans within their job and the remaining four panelists shared their journey to the U.S. and how they have found “home” within the area. With 64 people in attendance, connections to jobs, schooling and friendships were formed. From this Community Change Initiative, the group was reminded how far a friendly smile can go to all members of our community.

Kenny Bartholomew, Audrey Charchenko, Sam Grantham, Donn Groth, Megan Strese, Dustin Ulmer

The Police and Law Enforcement Interaction Education project was created with the goal to decease the occurrence of aggressive or negative interactions between police/law enforcement and the citizens in the Fargo, Moorhead and West Fargo communities. The project entailed engagement of many parties to create an educational video with content developed by local police departments to be distributed to local driving schools, local school districts and stored on local police department websites as an ongoing educational resource. The video will be published in the upcoming months so keep an eye out for a great educational opportunity on how to properly engage with police/law enforcement.

TIPS FOR MANAGING CASH FLOW DURING TIMES OF FLUX For many American businesses, recent economic upheaval has forced them to reevaluate their business models, their assets, and what success looks like. Some industries needed to find ways to stay afloat, while others were slammed with unplanned-for demand. A challenging time can be an opportunity to take a fresh look at your business and develop some cash flow best practices. Understanding where your business stands and what resources are available can help you make better, more informed decisions.

Get in the habit of making cash flow projections Many businesses go with the flow from day to day. Making projections might seem like unnecessary effort, but when done consistently they can reveal efficiencies that improve profits or let you invest in growth – or highlight where you can shave expenses in hard times. Budgeting is critical to understanding your operating liquidity, which is the lifeblood of your business’ ability to sustain itself. Planning for and managing the timing of cash outlays and inflows is as important as managing profit margins. sure your growth strategy is aligned with your financial position. Keep good records and talk to a banker or advisor before deciding how to address a financial need.

Pay special attention to credit practices During times of economic risk, vendors or suppliers might want greater assurances of a customer’s ability to pay before extending credit. Business owners may begin requiring up-front payments. Strive to build solid credit references, organized and timely financial reporting, and a strong relationship with your business partners. The upside of these credit practices is that your business becomes a better credit risk and faces less uncertainty.

Rethink fundamentals like staffing and space Today, businesses are in a unique position where they can step back and rethink even their most basic expenses. Some businesses have learned they can do more work from home, lessening real estate requirements; others need reconfigured spaces for a new business model. Investments in robotics and automation also might make sense for both economic and public health reasons.

Ambassador recognition

We want to give a huge shout out to Donn Groth, Midwest Radio, who celebrated 30 years as a Public Relations Ambassador this year. We think he’s attended over 1,500 ribbon cutting and groundbreaking ceremonies over the past three decades! Thank you, Donn, for your dedication to supporting member businesses and all of your hard work!

The #1 thing I know for certain is that I have enjoyed the honor of helping hundreds of (maybe even a couple hundred) businesses celebrate being new to the community or milestones and new locations with them over the many years. I wholeheartedly believe in the FMWF Chamber of Commerce and the way that it works to promote economic growth and prosperity for business and members. I hope I have many more years of celebrating and working with the committee in front of me.

CITY SPOTLIGHT

Glyndon, MN

MAYOR:

Tracy Tollefson

CURRENT POPULATION: 1,406

Tell me about the history of your city.

What success and challenges have you faced in recent years?

Glyndon, a city in Glyndon Township, section 2, was platted as a railway village in the spring of 1872, being named by officers of the Northern Pacific Railroad company, and thence the township was named. It is also the name of small villages in Pennsylvania and Maryland. The village was organized in 1875, incorporated as a village on February 14, 1881, and reincorporated on April 6, 1908. The oldest village in the county began as a tent village, with houses later built over the tent structures. It was named for a popular writer of Atlantic Hearth and Home, Laura Catherine Redden Searing, who used the name Howard Glyndon as a nom de plume. The post office began in 1872, first located in S. Campbell’s store with Stiles R. Nettleton, postmaster; four hotels were built in the first year of settlement.

The City of Glyndon is monitoring the revenue we receive each year and trying to best allocate funds for infrastructure and priorities the city has identified.

What kind of growth have you seen throughout recent years in your community? Glyndon continues to see growth in both residential and commercial. Stockwood business district has seen many lots sold and the residential subdivisions are growing. We have residential homes ranging from $150K to $400K and a new subdivision, Southview Addition, with many new homes. Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton School District recently passed a bond referendum that will provide enhancements or additions to programming for preK-12 students.

What issues are city leadership paying close attention to? The city council is monitoring the COVID-19 federal and state guidelines and revenue allocations and using those funds in areas for the betterment of the city. We continue to monitor and prioritize LGA funds, and anticipate areas of future growth to plan accordingly.

36  THE BRIDGE

May 2021

What is your vision for the future of your city? • Promote commercial and residential growth. • Continue to create partnerships with organizations and businesses that promote Glyndon. • Increase revenue sources for the city.

How do you partner or work with other communities? The City of Glyndon works closely with the county, townships, school district, businesses and residents in regard to long-range planning for the city, and will collaborate and utilize other community resources as needed. Glyndon prides itself in having our Police and Fire/Rescue departments assist other departments and organizations.

What is one thing you want others to know about your community? Glyndon is a family-friendly, close-knit community that is growing. It is a perfect location for raising a family, starting a business or enjoying retirement living. Prospective home buyers will find Glyndon has great home values per square foot and several wonderful lots available. We have a fabulous school district and dedicated businesses who support what we do as a city.

Anything else we should know? Glyndon is “A Great Place to Call Home!”
