a note
PRESIDENT
FROM THE
It May Be Cold, but My Heart is Warm Every year around mid-January, something special happens. Our printer works overtime, boxes and piles of papers start appearing, our new Directories and Public Policy Guides arrive, and it can only mean one thing: Operation Thank You is near. As our staff gathers the materials for our new member packets, I am able to witness a true camaraderie as we prepare for this busy – and important – event. It’s one of our busiest times for Chamber volunteers, and especially for our Ambassadors and staff, where all hands are on deck. What makes Operation Thank You so important is not what is inside each member packet (though we are awfully proud of the work that went into making each of those items), but what we are able to do because of those packets. With over 2,100 businesses that are members of the Chamber, it is difficult to be able to get to know each company throughout the calendar year. But because of Operation Thank You, we get the chance to knock on your doors, say hello and visit for a moment. These personal, face-to-face interactions are what we live for. It provides an opportunity to thank our members for their support, and to remind them of the benefits included with their membership. It allows us to learn about what they do and find out how we can support them even better. That’s at the heart of why we exist: to engage with and advocate for the businesses that make up our community. So when that volunteer showed up at your door, I hope you were able to take a moment to visit with that person. If you didn’t, or if you have more to share, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with any of us – whether a committee member, ambassador, Chamber staff member or myself personally. We want to build relationships, because great people and great businesses like you are the reason we are here. And for that, I cannot say THANK YOU enough. FMWFCHAMBER.COM · 5

JANUARY EGGS & ISSUES RECAP
A Look at the Upcoming Legislative Sessions January marked the beginning of both Minnesota and North Dakota’s legislative sessions. At January’s Eggs & Issues, we were joined by Andy Peterson, president of the Greater North Dakota Chamber of Commerce, and Jennifer Byers, vice president of grassroots & Chamber relations at the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce, to learn what was in store. On the Minnesota side, current Governor Mark Dayton is now serving his final term, and the legislature is controlled by Republicans. One thing they will be resolving is a budget surplus. The main issue the Minnesota Chamber will be watching is tax relief, but they’re also keeping their eye on health care costs in hopes of reducing premiums, trying to stop new wage and benefit mandates, workforce development, and a transportation investment bill. 10 THE BRIDGE · FEBRUARY 2017
In North Dakota, this is our first session with new Governor Doug Burgum, and one initiative there aligns with the state Chamber’s mission to make North Dakota’s business climate the best in all 50 states. We have lots of money in the bank, but some challenges. Peterson said North Dakota is already great at tax relief for both personal and corporate rates, but some priorities they see will be continuing education funding, restoring certain tax credits and increasing entrepreneurial funding. Peterson also spoke about the importance of competitive sourcing and sustaining WSI. Thank you to all that came, and we look forward to seeing you at a future event!
PUBLIC AFFAIRS Advocacy is one of The Chamber’s four main areas of focus, and we take our work in public policy and advocacy seriously. 2017: WHAT WE LEARNED Presenting Sponsor
We also surveyed attendees via live polling. The results are as follows
This year’s State of the Cities was an exciting celebration of all our metro cities’ growth, development, initiatives and collaboration. With so much great news and plans coming from each community, spirits were high and laughs were many as we discussed the issues with our mayors. Although the announcements were largely positive, there were moments to recognize recent tough times, including the loss of police officer Jason Moszer and the opioid crisis. Thank you to Dave Sederquist from Xcel Energy, who provided opening remarks, and to KFGO’s Joel Heitkamp for serving as emcee.

Digital Hacks to Simplify Your Life
Women Living a FastPaced Lifestyle: Are You Keeping Up?
Thursday, February 23
Tuesday, March 28
3:30 to 5 p.m. Sanctuary Events Center
Hacking doesn’t just refer to rogue programmers. “Life hacks” can also refer to changing the way you do things to make daily activities more efficient. In the book “Trust Agents” by Chris Brogen and Julien Smith, they define hacking as “changing the rules” or “using a system in a different way than it was designed.” This session will look at little hacks that make life easier. Whether it’s simply thinking about things differently, finding hidden functionality in tools most of us use every day or downloading a new app, it’s about finding a way to transform an annoyance to a tiny source of daily joy. Kirsten Jensen, founder and digital strategist of Next Action Digital, will share her favorite digital hacks: tips, tricks and apps that you can use anywhere to simplify your life. Learn practical tips and an action plan to simplify your life using technology and apps, how to make more of tools you already use, and find a new tool or app to simplify your life Please bring new or gently used gloves, mittens and scarves for 16 to 26 year olds for Fraser’s Stepping Stones Resource Center.

BURNETT
People in today’s society focus on living a fast-paced life, and women in particular seem to fall in line with all that it has to offer — multitasking, lists and busyness. Dr. Ann Burnett, professor and director of women and gender studies at NDSU, will talk about her research into the fast pace of life, what it means for women leaders and whether or not “keeping up” is such a good idea. Dr. Ann Burnett was born in Colorado, attended Colorado College for her bachelor’s degree in economics, and the University of Northern Colorado for her master’s degree in communication. She received her Ph.D. at the University of Utah, with a focus on jury decision-making. In addition to her interest in legal communication, Dr. Burnett also pursues research in interpersonal communication on how fast-paced lifestyles impact relationships. She is also associate director of an NSF ADVANCE grant, awarded to NDSU in fall 2008, targeted to recruiting and retaining more women faculty, especially in science and math. Burnett was appointed Faculty Athletics Representative in December 2015.

MEET THE VOLUNTEERS Learn more about some of our dedicated committee members. These are just two of the many people who help us do all that we do. We thank them for their support and service.
What do you do when you’re not working? It feels like work never ends but when I take a break from work I enjoy the outdoors and spending time with my family. For personal activities, I enjoy golfing, hunting, fishing and snowmobiling. My wife Andrea and I enjoy traveling and spending time at the lake.

What is best about living and working in Fargo Moorhead West Fargo? Our community is filled with great people, great leaders and is a wonderful place to enjoy numerous arts and entertainment opportunities. Our community has everything I need, it is a regional service hub for purchasing goods and services and we have hundreds of restaurants to enjoy. What do you like most about being involved with The Chamber? Volunteering to serve on a committee at The Chamber is an opportunity to give back to the community and support the businesses that serve our great cities. What is one thing you would like other people to know about your committee? The Public Affairs committee reviews important issues that affect our community. As a committee, we hear reports and presentations from various groups or individuals to learn more about an issue. The committee will discuss an issue and pass on a recommendation to the Chamber board for review. What is the best professional advice you have ever received? Never stop learning, take advantage of moments in time, engage in opportunities to make a difference, work with a purpose and give back to your community.
What do you do when you’re not working? I have always been interested in local and district politics and have served in several roles including district chair. I’m also an avid reader and enjoy knitting. Family activities fill in the rest of my free time! What is best about living and working in Fargo Moorhead West Fargo? The F-M metro is large enough to have a lot of resources, yet small enough to make connections. I also enjoy the diversity – the world came to us!

LEADERSHIP FMWF

Leadership Class Meets the Mayors While the topics covered in the January Leadership session were diverse, there was one common theme: development. We were able to take a dive into the world of community development and professional development, both of which are incredibly important to becoming a more well-rounded leader. First, the class started the day at the State of the Cities event. Immediately following, they had a one-on-one meeting with the mayors to ask questions on things like leadership, getting more involved with the community and how to better serve the place they call home. We know the class left feeling energized to go forth and
continue their leadership paths. After we wrapped up our time at the Holiday Inn, we traveled north to John Deere Electronic Solutions to focus on topics including crucial conversations, building brand ambassadors through company culture, workplace wellness initiatives and conflict management from a few of our community’s experts. A special thanks to Jess Almlie, Discovery Benefits, Stephanie Schroeder, Discovery Benefits, Jacinta Reidinger, Blue Cross Blue Shield North Dakota and John Trombley, The Village Business Institute for sharing their knowledge with the class.
Eide Bailly is proud to support the FMWF Chamber Leadership Program. Not only do we see value in it across our community, but we’ve seen firsthand the impact it has on our employees. We’ve seen team members grow exponentially and become more effective and confident leaders within our office and the community. Further, the connections they make with other leaders in their program class, as well as speakers brought in for the program, are invaluable. During their time in the program, they are given the opportunity to collaborate and make a great impact in the community through their Community Change Initiative. The valuable connections made by our team members have even resulted in work for our company. We would highly support and encourage businesses to consider sending their employees through the FMWF Chamber Leadership Program. -Ross Manson, Partner in Charge of the Fargo Office, Eide Bailly LLP

Meet the YEA! Mentors Since bringing the Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) to our community, we have had a number of individuals and businesses show interest in getting involved. One of the biggest volunteer commitments calls for individuals to serve as mentors. Each YEA! student is paired with a mentor who helps him/her write their business plan and prepare for the Shark Tank Investor Panel competition. Mentors become a part of each student’s team by working alongside them for six weeks. Our students couldn’t accomplish their goals within this program without guidance from the following volunteer mentors:
• Bernie Dardis, Indigo Signworks • Betty Gronneberg, uCodeGirl • Camille Grade, Myriad Mobile • Courtland Miller, Killbourne Group • Craig Dresser, InterceptEFT • Craig Ehrmantraut, Cornerstone Bank • Darcy Kasprowicz, North Dakota Autism Center, Inc. • Erik Diederich, Industrial Builders, Inc. • Jeff Thomas, Cornerstone Bank • Jill Christopher, Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Red River Valley • Kurt Kiefer, Fargo Rubber Stamp Works, Inc. • Mark Nisbet, Xcel Energy • Ryan Aldrich, GoodBulb • Sarah Mastera, Bell Bank Mortgage • Shawn Paschke, Xcel Energy • Veronica Michael, Impact Foundation

There’s more to Gateway Chevrolet Cadillac in Fargo than just cars – though those are certainly their specialty. You can also find complimentary coffee & cookies, exemplary customer service and an experienced service center throughout all of their three locations.
Across town, they also have Gateway Clearance Center and a Collision Center off of University Drive. Owner Brad Sather has been in the car business since 1977 and bought Gateway Chevrolet in 2000, followed by Hyundai Nissan in 2008.

Gateway Chevrolet is located on 38th Street in Fargo, right next door to Gateway Hyundai Nissan.
Both Sather and General Sales Manager Jon Cole maintain that what sets Gateway apart is its customer service. “Where the employee meets the customer, that’s the defining moment. We’ve got great employees, and we strive for a great customer experience,” Sather said. Cole also says Gateway is simply a fun place to work with 28 THE BRIDGE · FEBRUARY 2017
an inevitable flub. “Are we going to stub our toe? Absolutely,” Sather said. “But it’s what you do when you have one and how you fix the problem that defines you.” One interesting trend Sather has observed throughout his years in the business is that nowadays, customers are more informed thanks to the Internet. He views this as a good thing, as it means customers come in already knowing details about

the vehicles, have compared prices and read reviews. Because that work is largely already done, it allows his team more time to focus on providing a great experience and building a relationship. That price component is a big deal to Gateway though, and Cole starts every day using a tool that compares their cars to others on the Internet. His goal: To have the top 5% best priced vehicles in a 250-mile radius. And often that does mean making price adjustments to the vehicles on their lot. Something else unique to car sales is that everything is tracked, from registrations from the manufacturer to
satisfaction surveys from the factory. “We’re probably the most critiqued industry in the world,” Sather said. “There’s no other business like the car business, from the standpoint of the manufacturers’ participation in the daily ongoings of the business.” While one way Gateway drives the community forward is by literally helping customers drive away, they also invest in community causes that help people. One example is their work with BIG 98.7’s Christmas Wish, in which they provide funds to support families in need. They also do a lot of work supporting breast cancer awareness.

The NDSU Research & Technology Park (RTP) and its companies have seen tremendous growth over the last five years according to a survey conducted by EMSI in 2010 and repeated by the RTP in 2015. As of December 2015, there were 1,105 jobs at companies located in the park and 234 jobs at RTP incubator graduate companies located around the Fargo-Moorhead area. This is a 50% increase over the number of jobs at the end of 2010. Additionally, the 1,339 direct jobs created by the park and its companies support an estimated 1,300 indirect jobs in the Fargo-Moorhead area. The RTP has served as a catalyst for high-tech economic development in Fargo since 2000. “The Park’s goals mirror those of the state of North Dakota,” RTP Executive Director Chuck Hoge said. “Our shared mission is to diversify the economy through high-tech STEM jobs, develop the workforce and provide valuable career opportunities for North Dakota students in state.” Starion Bank received the Director’s Award from the North Dakota District Office of the Small Business Administration (SBA).
