a note FROM THE
PRESIDENT Chamber Crew Across America
The first week of May was an incredibly busy – but heartwarming week for us here at The Chamber. Aside from hosting another Eggs & Issues on the Minnesota legislative session, we had four distinct reasons to celebrate Chamber and community successes. First was attending the YWCA’s Women of the Year awards, where Women Connect was up for the Leader in Women’s Empowerment category. We didn’t win, but it was an honor to be nominated, and we appreciated all the kind words spoken about our impact. My staff came back inspired by all the stories they heard at the event. It’s great to see so many women working toward positive change in our region. Then, we hit the road and spread out across the country. I went to Washington, D.C. with Elly Peterson and members of our Military Affairs committee to
attend a special reception and to advocate for the 119th wing of the Air National Guard. Honoring our military is a continued priority for both myself and our Chamber. Meanwhile in Rochester, New York, Katie Ralston and Tracy Powell went with our local Young Entrepreneurs Academy winner Bridget McManamon to watch her compete in the YEA! semi-finals and represent her business to a panel of national judges. I’ve seen the video of her presentation, and am proud to have this bright young woman a part of our community. She was polished and professional and is poised to do great things for girls in need.
for a few awards and were thrilled to learn that Military Appreciation Night at the RedHawks won Event of the Year! Just in time as we’re gearing up for this summer’s event for the seventh year in a row. It’s not often that we’re that spread out, and it makes it all the more meaningful to have had such an amazing week. All of us are beyond grateful to all who have supported us. We have the best members, and we couldn’t do what we do without you. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you.
Last, but certainly not least, four Chamber staff spent time in Sioux Falls for the Mid America Chamber Executives annual conference. They returned with notebooks full of ideas how we can better serve our members. In addition, we were up FMWFCHAMBER.COM · 5

Eggs & Issues Recap North Dakota’s Legislative Session The drawn out 65th Legislative Session in North Dakota was nothing short of interesting. Contentious, even, at times. The budget was uncertain, there was much talk about taxes and oil production, some heavy-hitting bills to regulate, an influx of residents to plan for, and a pipeline protest on top of it all. Last month’s Eggs & Issues looked at it all. Rep. Al Carlson, House Majority Leader, Rep. Kathy Hogan,
• Measures were made to expand health care workforce for trained professionals to cross over into other areas, which legislators think could help the current nurse shortage Perhaps the most concerning cut was to higher education, which Carlson admitted was painful. At the end of the session though, they were able to restore some money back via challenge grants, Research ND and $1.6 million for NDSU’s Minard Hall. Other concerns noted included a cut for roads and construction, property tax relief, services for the homeless, and an attack on incentive programs.
Assistant House Minority Leader, Senator Jim Roers and Senator Judy Lee sat down to talk about the issues they saw. All legislators were in for an uphill battle with $1.8 billion less revenue to spend, and it took them all biennium to figure out how to do it. Nevertheless, our state still saw many wins. Among them: • Medicaid was expanded • There was a $66.5 million commitment to Fargo’s interior flood protection and the F-M Diversion • A syringe exchange program was established to combat substance abuse • A $150,000 pilot project between the Department of Human Services and an urban school has been established for early intervention and prevention of children’s behavioral health challenges 8 THE BRIDGE · JUNE 2017
Of course we can’t talk about this session without mentioning the medical marijuana bill. Senator Lee referenced a large amount of work legislators did to see this legislation through, including setting up rules for designated caregivers, registrant ID cards, growers and manufacturers, and state-run dispensaries. “Never have so many legislators worked so hard on something we hated, and many of us hated this, but the will of the people was preserved and we worked hard to do what the voters wanted,” she said.
One common thread each panelist spoke to was a misperception that they didn’t get along. Though they differed on some issues and had budget barriers, they were able to rally together and in the end, reach the best outcome they could for our state and for our communities.

As the Minnesota legislature wraps up, there are exciting things to look forward to as a community. The legislature worked with a surplus this session that brings with it many opportunities but also a set of obstacles as agreements are made and priorities are being set. With lawmakers working diligently in the interests of their constituents, they continue to make smart choices that move the state forward. We are honored to host Senator Kent Eken, Representative Paul Marquart and Representative Ben Lien as they share with us the work they were able to accomplish this session. Bill Blazer, senior vice president of the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce, will join us to discuss how business priorities fared – and how the actions and inactions at the Capitol affect your ability to succeed and grow jobs in Minnesota. Following the event, please consider joining Bill for a discussion session on the top business priorities and what you want decision-makers in St. Paul to hear from you!
National security is a key component to the overall well-being of our nation. In ever-changing global times, it is important that our National Guard members are ready and prepared. We are fortunate DOHRMANN to have such important military operations here in Fargo Moorhead West Fargo with the 119th Wing of the Air National Guard, the Happy Hooligans and the 141st MEB of the Army National Guard. These airmen and soldiers are essential not only to national defense, but across the state in times of crisis and natural disaster. With deployments happening and changes taking place, it is important that community members are informed so we can best support our co-workers, friends and family who serve in the National Guard. Please join us as we host Major General Alan Dohrmann, Adjuntant General for the state of North Dakota, as he shares with us an update on the current happenings for military men and women of our region.

Workforce Update Two years ago, we kicked off a major initiative to solve a regional workforce gap in the metro. In collaboration with the Economic Development Corporation, Fargo-Moorhead Convention & Visitor’s Bureau, the FM Area Foundation and the United Way of Cass-Clay, along with investors, volunteers and committees, we’ve been working hard on action items in follow up from the study’s recommendations and strategies from our committees. An event was held last month to share some updates.
Website Clearinghouse
One overarching idea is to produce materials with consistent messaging and to establish a central clearinghouse for information. Flint Group was selected to create a website to serve this purpose, and it’s currently in stage 3 of 4. The site’s primary audience will be workforce moving to the metro.
Retaining Local Students
Working toward the Cultivate committee’s goals, one of our very own FMWF Leadership projects was tied in. “Experience FMWF” is launching this fall in a pilot program at five area universities to bridge the gap between students and local businesses. Motivated by the statistic that seven out of 10 students leave a community after graduation, the goal of this program is to keep more of those students here.
Removing Building Barriers
The Build group has been working on removing barriers to transportation and child care. Because 45% of the 30,000 jobs coming down the pipeline will be low-skill, low-wage jobs, this is crucial for finding people with the available and affordable resources to allow them to work. They’re also looking at incentives for builders to build in that lower bracket, and are seeking one or more workforce housing champions.
Child Care
The YMCA conducted a child care demand study, which revealed that there is an excess of care for school-age and pre-school children, but a distinct lack of child care for infants. The United Way has invested child care scholarships to address this issue. 286 children and families have been helped last year from this effort. The EDC has also partnered with the Bank of North Dakota, and has added a child care loan fund as an eligible program.
Education & Beyond
The Innovate group has three initiatives its working on. A student job-shadowing program will connect k-12 students with more educational options, including certifications, apprenticeships, 2- and 4-year degrees in every sector. And, a social tech pitch event and an incubation space will further support the entrepreneurial ecosystem in our community. And of course, the Frostival has already had two successful events with the idea of embracing our winters, and a third one will be back and bigger than ever!

According to a recent report, millennials could become the most productive generation with the right combination of management and motivation. Millennials, the generation born between 1980 and 1996, are influential by virtue of their sheer numbers and their remarkable cultural and technological impact on society. By 2020, millennials are projected to eclipse the Baby Boomers in size, and currently 58% of the workforce consists of millennials, according to Pew Research. It’s no wonder, then, that organizations and their leaders are realizing the importance of engaging millennials in the workplace. This is also why retaining employees has never been more imperative. We know that millennials have had a different upbringing than past generations, and that they differ in their expectations of themselves and others. At this session, Tamara Anderson of Dale Carnegie ND and MN and Brein Haugen of Rasmussen College will discuss strategies for understanding and retaining millennials, as well as look at qualitative research.

Throughout our lives, we regularly face situations that have the potential to be life changing. Whether it is a decision that can send us down a new path or an interaction that changes a relationship, our lives are full of crucial moments. Unfortunately, there is less flexibility for missteps in some situations, like the workplace. We often find ourselves “playing it safe” to avoid taking risks that have irreversible consequences. Although it is wise to be careful about what we say and do, we also must consider the significance of doing or saying nothing. This session is designed to help participants gain a better understanding of their core values, consider the opportunities for crucial conversations and develop strategies that can be implemented in their daily lives. Dr. Stephanie Ahlfeldt is an associate professor of communication studies and the department chair of the Communication Studies and Theatre Art department at Concordia College. Please consider bringing pads, tampons, washcloths, women’s underwear, deodorant, hand sanitizer, and/or a toothbrush or toothpaste, to donate to Herstory.
How do we answer the call of leadership, embrace our power as women leaders and live a fulfilling life at the same time? Whatever your leadership role, this session is for you! We are living in extraordinary times. As women, we are not only being asked – but are expected – to step into numerous leadership roles like never before. It is crucial that we take our place at the table, the boardroom, the corner office or lead from wherever we are. At this presentation, you will find out if you have any fears limiting your leadership so you can step up and lead fearlessly. Learn how to inspire, motivate and model what is possible for others. Redefine and reframe your leadership so that leading powerfully and authentically becomes natural. Learn how your inner resilience, authenticity and presence affect your leadership so you can lead from a point of fulfillment. Nukhet Hendricks is a women’s leadership coach, founder of She Leads Fearlessly and executive director of Homeward Animal Shelter. Please bring school supplies to donate to United Way.

“Our PUSH group sets a date every month, and regardless if everyone can make it, we meet. We lift each other up personally and professionally every time we are together. It’s hard to describe the instant connection you have with some people that you cross paths with and I’m so grateful that I’ve met these women. We don’t meet people by accident, they come when we need them the most, and they stay for the fun, the challenges, the sadness and ultimately for the authentic friendship. YEA!: YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS ACADEMY
Recap from the YEA! Semi-Finals in New York By Bridget McManamon At 4:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 4, my parents and I set off to Rochester, New York, for the Young Entrepreneurs Academy Saunders Scholars national competition. Upon arrival, I got registered and interviewed and spent the evening networking and having a welcome dinner at Dave & Busters. It was really awesome getting to speak with people my age about their businesses and their YEA! programs back home.

Herstory.
The next morning was the day of the competition. It was pouring rain, but we made it to the campus of Rochester Institute of Technology where the events of the day were held. I presented pretty early in the day in an auditorium with about 20 other students and seven judges. I was so happy with how my pitch went, and I loved getting to share my idea of empowering women through increasing access to menstrual hygiene products with so many people.
during the day and complimented my project or were interested in donating and getting involved.
After the round was over, we went to lunch and attempted a campus tour until we wimped out because of the crazy rain! In the afternoon, my parents and I went to another round of pitches. I was really inspired throughout the day by all the great ideas. It was also cool how people of all ages came up to me
The next day, my parents and I got to explore Rochester and even went to Susan B. Anthony’s house – she has been my idol for years! I had such a wonderful time at the YEA! national competition, and I would just like to say thank you for all of the community support I have received!
Next, we went to a little welcome from the dean of the Business School at RIT and got to hear from some students. Then we went to dinner and got to watch the finalists and People’s Choice winners compete. While I was not one of them, I was still so thankful to be there and also motivated to come back home and get to work!
If you know a student would make a great candidate for next year’s YEA! class, please encourage them to apply today! For more information, contact Katie Ralston at 218.359.0511 or kralston@ fmwfchamber.com, or visit us online at fmwfchamber.com/YEA.

What is one thing you would like other people to know about your committee? I think it is important for other people to realize the importance of our military outreach from The Chamber. In our business community, we have many men and women serving in the military or National Guard that walk amongst us every day. Many of these individuals spend time away from their friends and families to protect our communities and supporting their efforts is incredibly important. What is the best professional advice you have ever received? Every experience, good or bad, is a chance to learn, improve and grow. With the right attitude and work ethic, great things can be achieved, so never take any opportunity for granted and make the most of every opportunity you have to truly make a difference.
DIANE LAFFEN Receiving Agent, Dakotas Chapter NECA Military Affairs committee member
What do you do when you’re not working? I like to read, get together with friends, and travel. What is best about living and working in Fargo Moorhead West Fargo? It is a very friendly city and there are lots of different activities to attend for all ages. What do you like most about being involved with The Chamber? My son, Nick, is in the Air Force, so I wanted to help out other military families in need of volunteer services. What is one thing you would like other people to know about your committee? The Military Affairs committee is very rewarding with its support to military families. What is the best professional advice you have ever received? Treat others as you want to be treated.

It is an independent, community bank with two offices in Hawley and Moorhead. Here’s what else Bruce Tellefson, the bank’s president, shared with us. Valley Premier Bank offers you the best of both worlds. You get the superior customer service of your hometown bank and the latest technology that allows you to bank anywhere. Eide Bailly:
Where Culture & Consulting Collide Most everyone around here knows Eide Bailly as a CPA firm – and that has been the company’s roots since 1917 – but the advent of modern technology has shifted how this storied firm does business today. One hundred years ago when Eide Helmeke & Co. opened its doors in Fargo, accounting was done with pen and paper. Not only has technology made this job quicker and more efficient, it also provided the opportunity to take customer service to the next level. Embracing change and focusing on innovative ideas has allowed them to grow with their industry and with their clients. A critical moment in the Eide Bailly timeline was in 1998 when Eide Helmeke & Co. merged with Charles Bailly & Co. to form Eide Bailly LLP. Ross Manson, partner in charge of the Fargo office,
says this move created a firm large enough to accommodate the growing workload and increase their offerings. The Eide Bailly that we know today also offers a robust range of tax, audit and business advisory services. The technology consulting practice is an ever-growing area for the firm too. This includes being a reseller of NetSuite, Sage and Salesforce, systems optimization and contract work. Valuation and forensics also sits in the local office, and they have specialists for health care consulting and tax implications, among many others. While their service offering has expanded, so too has their geographic footprint. In fact, Eide Bailly is the 19th largest accounting firm in the United States. “To me, that’s a unique success story for North Dakota,” Manson said.
Though they’ve grown across many states, they generally don’t go East of the Mississippi. “We’re committed to our Midwestern roots while still looking at Western expansion,” Jenni Huotari, director of business outsourcing and strategy, said. Through the years, some core values have remained key pillars for the company. “We have a strong commitment to our people and our clients,” Manson said. “Those two things are what lead to a successful foundation and what we will continue to focus on.” Huotari added that Eide Bailly is also committed to lifelong learning. “As a firm, I think we invest more in continuing education than most. We also have a strong commitment to personal development and soft skills … which enhances what we do individually and allows us to work better together.” The company believes that their success is tied to the communities that they serve, so it’s important to give back. Houtari acknowledges that accounting knowledge is sought after by non-profits, so a corporate responsibility insists upon volunteer hours for staff to donate time and talents to area organizations. As Eide Bailly celebrates a successful first 100 years, with anniversary events across all offices, what might be next? Manson

says they’re working on outsourcing accounting opportunities for clients. “I’m really excited about utilizing technology and resources in another way,” he said. You’ll also see their advisory services evolve for clients looking for additional skill sets outside of their traditional compliance, and an enhancement to their core tax and audit services.
“Technology will remove the need for human function in some parts of our jobs,” Huotari said. “But it will open the door to serving at a higher level. We’re trying to be ahead of that and prove our worth. That’s where our client commitment is essential.” Ross Manson and Jenni Huotari
