It's time to fuel our future! May 22nd was a particularly exciting day last month, as over a year of preparation and work behind the scenes was revealed publicly in a press conference. Fueling Our Future is now launched! What is Fueling Our Future? It is a long-term community initiative, divided into four-year programs of work, led by over 30 private and public investors. Its main purpose is to provide a regional approach to decision making, bringing everyone involved to the table to decide what is best for our metro. It doesn’t aim to solve today’s or tomorrow’s issues, but rather, positions us for success long into the future by providing funding, time, resources and support to back projects and programs needed for our community, businesses, residents and visitors. We’re thrilled to call the Greater Fargo Moorhead Economic Development Corporation a partner in this initiative. Their leadership, vision and resources have been immensely helpful in getting Fueling Our Future launched. Together, now and moving forward, we can accomplish what neither of us could do on our own. It’s truly an example of the collaboration needed to advance the most important issues facing our region.

Fueling Our Future work will fall under three key pillars: • People (workforce development) • Prosperity (economic development) • Place (community assets/quality of life) Kick-off projects include: • Support career academies across the region • Create a certified shovel-ready sites program for the region • Create a business-focused task force to support local air service • Support the establishment of a business accelerator for the region We’re grateful to everyone that has invested, supported and guided Fueling Our Future to date. A governance board—comprised of community leaders from private and public sectors who have invested significantly—has been assembled to approve and review projects and funds brought forward by the partners. Chamber wins 2019 MACE Award The Bridge named “Publication of the Year” We’re thrilled to share that The Bridge received the Publication of the Year Award at the 2019 Mid-America Chamber Executives (MACE) conference last month in Sioux Falls. The annual MACE awards are given by the MACE committee as an example of the highest examples of hard work, passion and effort displayed by chambers across a six-state region. The Publication of the Year award recognizes a publication that has shown innovation, relevance to the organization, quality content, originality, and audience engagement tactics that provide a benchmark for other organizations to follow.

Throughout the years, we've been dedicated to making The Bridge push the boundaries of a traditional chamber newsletter and stand out for its value to members. It’s more than a guide to upcoming events and announcements. We work hard to present engaging articles, timely information, aesthetically pleasing and modern design, and sections that recognize the great work of our committees and members.

Chamber staff honored at YWCA Women of the Year awards Two Chamber staff were nominated and recognized at the YWCA's 46th Annual Women of the Year Awards on May 6. Casey Sanders, manager of membership, was nominated in the Advocating for Equality category for her work with the YMCA of Cass and Clay Counties and volunteerism supporting women with family members facing addiction. At the YMCA, Sanders pushed her team to remove barriers for individuals who are low income, of differing abilities and unsure of their identity. She implemented a new process to assure that the Y would be a place where all are welcome. She is also an advocate of and speaker for First Step Recovery, and founder of The Resolute Project, a community group for women to find connections and gain confidence. Katie Mastel, public policy coordinator, was nominated and won in the category of Young Woman of Today & Tomorrow. Mastel also serves as Executive of External Affairs for NDSU Student Government, interning with Senator John Hoeven, and working for the ND

Legislative updates in ND: Eggs & Issues recap As North Dakota’s 66th Legislative Assembly wrapped up, we were lucky to have several key legislators join us at Eggs & Issues in May to share first-hand the progress that was made this session. Chair of our Public Policy committee, Tim Flakoll of Tri-College University, moderated the panel. With a session that convened on January 3 and adjourned April 26, there were 905 bills and 79 resolutions introduced. Of those, 326 House bills and 253 Senate bills, and 34 House concurrent resolutions, 14 Senate concurrent resolutions, 1 House memorial resolution, and 1 Senate memorial resolution were adopted. The Governor signed 527 bills into law and vetoed 3 bills. First up for comments was Senator Judy Lee (District 13), who serves on the human services committee, and discussed social services redesign, addiction treatment and criminal justice reform. Rep Shannon Roers Jones (District 46) mentioned funding for pre-trial services programs, crediting our Cass County jail administrator for spearheading that effort locally. Rep Josh Boschee (District 44) said that this was the session where the legislature stopped studying the issues and started investing in them. He echoed shout-outs to our local service providers and to other lawmakers that have made strides in behavioral health funding and policy improvements. He also discussed several safety bills related to firearms, including the passage of a bill that will now

8 THE BRIDGE • JUNE 2019

authorize school boards to decide if nonlaw enforcement staff can have access to firearms. Senator Ronald Sorvaag (District 45) gave insight into the “prairie dog bill,” which provides state oil tax revenue to non-oil producing counties across the state to use for road and airport improvements, property tax relief and other infrastructure projects that local leaders determine. It will further be distributed to cities and townships. Locally, we’ll see about $25 million per biennium come available. He also made note of the legacy fund becoming available to use this biennium and said he wants to use the earnings to invest in things that will help our community in the future. Rep Thomas Beadle (District 27) took on the diversion funding topic. We now know that the state has committed to $750 million, which leaves the project $120 million short, in light of increased costs and changed plans. He is, however, hopeful that the rest will be provided in the next session. Roers Jones provided brief updates on the removal of blue laws, which will go into effect August 4 and allows businesses to open prior to noon on Sundays. We also learned that the previously voted in law to allow medical marijuana has a new expansion to include autism and brain injuries. Boschee explained the new ethics commission that has convened since the voters passed Measure 1, which became Article 14 of the state constitution.

With our metro on the grow, it is important to keep a focus on our community’s safety. Join us for this Eggs & Issues to hear from all three of our cities’ police chiefs as they discuss crime in our communities and overall safety of our region. They will touch on issues going on in their respective cities and collectively talk about areas where they collaborate. We’ll learn about the most pressing issues we face within our metro, and how we can approach them as a business community. Ag related legislative updates In May, our Agribusiness committee met to learn the insides of recent North Dakota legislation affecting the ag markets. Because many items fell under the radar or were not reported on in the media, this gave our members insight into what did – and didn’t – happen. Dr. Greg Lardy, NDSU, shared the items that affected NDSU extension, including budget changes for state agencies and various upgrades that NDSU was able to make to their web systems, seed cleaning and extension programs. Throughout previous legislative sessions, funding for a new Dunbar Hall has been one of the most talked-about items and this session finally produced the dollars to build a brand new Dunbar Hall. Additionally, the state authorized $40 million in funds for NDSU to construct a new Agriculture Products Development Center, or Harris Hall, contingent on NDSU being able to fundraise the $20 million remaining for the project.

Phil Murphy, ND Soybean Growers Association, also talked about key legislation affecting our ag members, including the farm home exemption bill redo that passed, rural roads and bridges funding, the prairie dog bill, corporate farming and a trespass bill. Minnesota Legislative Wrap-Up Date and location TBD

On January 8, 2019, the 91st legislative session in Minnesota was convened and was the official beginning that made the state very unique across the country. As the legislature gaveled in, Minnesota became the only state across the country to have a split legislature: the House under Democrat control and the Senate under Republican control brought eyes from all around the country to see how Minnesota would handle this division. The legislative session in Minnesota has been extremely active and included 2,921 House bills and 2925 Senate bills being introduced and covered a wide array of topics from budgets to hunting and elder care to taxes.

Of the 10 omnibus finance bills that make up the state’s budget, only higher education’s budget passed before the session adjourned forcing the state to call a special session to finalize all of the details of the remaining budgets. been decided but lawmakers are currently working on putting together all of the bills in hopes that the special session could be completed in one day. With a very sweet story of success, Sandy’s Donuts is a well-loved gem in our community. Actually, that’s an understatement. We looove Sandy’s here, and lines are often out the door. This beloved brand is actually a family business. What started as one small mom-and-pop shop in West Fargo now has expanded its footprint, added a downtown location, and has a third south Fargo store opening later this summer. At Sandy’s, it really is all about the doughnuts. “We want to make a really great quality product that people will want to come back for—a product they will want to tell their friends about,” said owner Mark Ostlund. But while their dough creations take the cake, you can’t forget about the coffee! Sandy’s proudly serves Stumbeano’s in store, which they make with beans that are fresh roasted for them each week. You don’t have to make it to one of their stores to get your sweet fix, either. You can catch the Sandy’s trailer at Bison tailgating, or even order online. “We love our jobs and it shows,” Ostlund said. “Fun is one of our core values as a business, and we want to make sure our customers and our staff have fun. We have a blast making new creations and bringing back old favorites.” Aside from catering to the sweet tooths in the community, they also pride themselves on giving back. Each day, leftover donuts bless the local shelters and non-profits in town. Deliveries are made to the New Life Center, Churches United, Salvation Army, YWCA, Dorothy Day House, Gladys Ray Shelter, Emergency Food Pantry, and the Great Plains Food Bank.

Did you know? Sandy’s Donuts namesake is Sandy Ostlund, a man who turned his love of doughnuts into this very business after losing his job at a trucking company in the ‘80s. Their website writes: “It so happens that the bakery in West Fargo, where Sandy lived, had closed down and was sitting empty. After some research the idea for Sandy’s Donuts was conceived. He borrowed a little money, bought some equipment, and started making donuts on September 13, 1983. It was an instant hit.”

Jeff Ostlund, Sandy’s grandson, is being groomed to eventually take over the store. He just graduated from NDSU with a degree in business management and is celebrated on Sandy’s social media.

How does Livewire’s story start? My start has its roots in Alexandria, Minnesota. After taking an interest in audio and video in middle school, I quickly became known as that kid that can run sound. Livewire was born, and during my high school and college years, we provided production for small events and concerts throughout the region, as well as disc jockey services for weddings and other events, often producing up to six events per weekend. Today, we are a regional leader in live event production, serving as a one-stop shop for live event video, audio, lighting, staging, scenery and rigging, as well as full-service video production. We’ve worked on events in every corner of the country, with our primary focus in Fargo, Bismarck, Sioux Falls, Minneapolis and central Minnesota.

What makes your organization unique? This one’s easy: we’re versatile, and we’re not afraid to travel. Many of our competitors throughout the region specialize in only certain types of live events or video projects and restrict most of their work to a certain geographical area. As a group of theatre professionals, we believe that every event is deserving of world-class production and event management, whether it’s TEDxFargo, a conference or non-profit gala in one of Fargo’s amazing hotel ballroom facilities, Creative Mornings at Drekker’s Brewhalla, or a coast-to-coast live two-way streaming event for our friends at WEX in Portland, Maine (and Utah, and Nashville, and right here in Fargo).

What do you like best about doing business here? We don’t give up on one another. We give second chances. We connect one another and help each other grow. Without a shred of doubt, if I had jumped into Livewire fulltime in any other city, I’m certain we would not have been able to build the connections we have and a result, our business, at the speed we have. What do you like most about being a member of The Chamber? We’re lucky: our Chamber of Commerce is the real deal. Late last month, we hosted another incredible— and sold-out—Corporate Cup. The YEA! class of 2019 graduated last month, making a total of 50 students to participate in our local YEA! program! This year’s class finished the year with field trips to Ronald McDonald House, Spotlight Media, Others, Kilbourne Group, Fargo Jet Center and Moorhead Country Club. Some of them even participated in the YEA! showcase that was held at the ChamberChoice Awards! The students loved networking with so many Chamber members and appreciated the opportunity to spread the word about their businesses. Students who participate in YEA! walk away from the program with stronger communication, collaboration, creative and critical thinking skills. We are very proud of all of our students as they continue to achieve success in business, school and extracurricular activities long after they graduate from the program.
