a note FROM THE
PRESIDENT A look at the ballot
With the June 12 election upon us, we have more details on forums for some of the local races. The Chamber continues to hold engagement in public policy as a priority by hosting various debates and forums as well as offering resources for enhanced education. The Fargo City Commission race is wrapping up with a heated race of nine candidates vying for two open seats. These candidates are: incumbents Tony Gehring and Dave Piepkorn, and challengers Tim Flakoll, Lenny Tweeden, Michael Williams, Linda Boyd, Arlette Preston, Liz Maddock-Johnson and Kelan Oster. We will be having a Fargo City Commission Candidate forum on June 6 at the Fargo City Commission Room. We invite you to join us for this free, no registration event, in order to hear more about the candidates and where they stand on crucial city issues. Moving to West Fargo, we have contested races for both the mayor seat and two city commission seats. Incumbent West Fargo Mayor Rich Mattern is being challenged by longtime resident and business leader Bernie Dardis. The three candidates for the two city commission seats are: incumbent Duane Hanson, and challengers Eric
Gjerdevig and Brad Olson. We will be hosting a West Fargo Candidate Forum for these races on June 7 at the West Fargo City Commission Room. This event is also free with no registration necessary. We hope you can join in this event as well to hear from the candidates on important topics. Looking at Moorhead’s mayor and city council, local legislative and the statewide North Dakota U.S. Senate and House seat races, we will have some interesting races to keep our eyes on as fall rolls around. We are excited that we have plans to host more forums and provide candidate questionnaires for these candidates as their election dates move closer in the early fall. For more information regarding the candidates, please visit our blog and watch the eBridge. For questions about the election please, visit your respective states’ Secretary of State webpages.

An abbreviated history 1948 Peter Shuck founds Western Products in Fargo as a lightning rod distributer.

1999 The Guinness Book of World Records inducts Western Products for the longest piece of seamless steel siding ever applied.

2008 Becomes one of the top 500 remodelers in the America. Opens a third location in St. Cloud.
2014 Renewal by Andersen presents Western Products the “Showroom Recognition” award.
2015 Opens its fifth location in Jamestown. 2016 Receives Renewal by Andersen’s “Homeowner Satisfaction” award.
2018 70th anniversary. …not to mention multiple People’s Choice Awards from Design and Living magazine, various dealer awards from Crystal Cabinet, and even more distinctions for its sales growth, product excellence and customer satisfaction from United States Seamless.
Say “home improvement” and the old Tim Allen TV show might come to mind for some. But for many around here, it calls to mind a local company specializing in various products and services for their home. That company is Western Products, and this year marks its 70th year in business. Today, their product offering includes siding, windows, roofing, gutters, soffit and fascia, patio and front doors, cabinets, window coverings and blinds—even spas and patio furniture. And all are installed by a Western Products-approved crew for a highquality product and a high-quality installation. With their full-service remodel approach and extensive brand offering, their customers can tailor their home improvement experience to fit their personal needs. Since the business has been around for decades, they’ve been able to constantly evolve to fit the needs of the people. One example of a revitalized customer experience is a
brand-new Design and Experience Center, opened in 2015 where customers can view real-life house facades so they can envision how their products would personalize their own home. “We strive to be the best in our marketplace, to provide unsurpassed customer satisfaction, to be totally committed to teamwork and to be relentless in the pursuit of improvement,” explained general manager Ray Blaha. An active corporate citizen, Western Products belongs to many local organizations and associations. And of course, they also give back through participating in the school supply drive and planning and implementing free-will donation events in the office to raise money for the charities they support. “Western Products is constantly working to improve our customer experience, as well as our employee experience,” Blaha said. “We believe that you cannot have one without the other, because happy employees lead to happy customers!”
To mark 70 years in business, Western Products is treating its employees to a picnic, its associate companies a breakfast event and increasing its referral reward program for its customers. “For us, encouraging our employees and letting them know how much good they’ve done is extremely important to running our business, and this picnic is just one small way for us to give back,” Blaha said. Looking ahead, you can expect the company to stay focused on adapting to its customers’ needs and delivering a high-quality product with reliable service, and a good dose of kindness to boot.

When business owners and employers hear the words “child care,” they most often think of the care, safety and education of young children. Join us to hear from collaborating industry leaders who will share research, current data and information on how strategic initiatives to improve access to quality child care elevates and helps businesses and employers meet workforce demands: Thomas Hill and Kristi Huber, United Way of Cass Clay; Pam Palmer, Bright & Early North Dakota; Erin Prochnow, YWCA Cass Clay; and Lorrie Thoemke, YMCA of Cass and Clay Counties.

Eide Bailly LLP The statistics are clear: Inclusive organizations outperform other organizations, and the impact of women leaders is essential to business success. Many organizations have invested in women’s leadership programs. But what makes one successful and sustainable? And why should businesses care about implementing these initiatives? Jenni Huotari will talk about the case for such programs and how to implement your own. Lisa Borgen, American Crystal Sugar Company; Camille Grade, Myriad Mobile; and Heather Silseth-Karels, John Deere Electronic Solutions, will share tips and tricks for building a successful program that will make a lasting impact on your business. Do you ever ask yourself what you should do with your life and how it can be more meaningful? Do you set goals for yourself and lose sight of them because life takes over? These questions can be daunting, especially for women that are already busy, stretched and overloaded. For many women, the goals you set and the meaningful life changes you want are a glimmer of light from a lighthouse way out in the distance. If this is you, the best course may be to abandon the map, aim for the lighthouse and simply row at a pace that is right for you. Join us to learn more on this topic from Debbie Stang. Please bring school supplies to donate to the United Way’s school supply drive.

technology and materials of today. In fact, that is what makes
Northwest Auto Body Inc. unique. Ongoing training, specialized equipment and state-of-the-art software all are needed to keep going into the future.
The collision repair facility of the future – “TODAY” has been our motto! The collision industry is changing fast. Vehicle makers are now telling us how they want their vehicles repaired. Because of that, our initiative is focused on manufacturer (OEM) certification and training. We have John Production Manager
recently been certified through assured performance for many vehicle manufacturers, and I have been on the regional committee for I-CAR (inter-industry conference on auto collision repair) since it was formed. I-CAR provides ongoing training and testing for our employees. Speaking of employees, highly trained technicians are hard to find. I have joined the advisory committee at NDSCS to hopefully recruit and sponsor new employees. The Chamber keeps us in touch with the local business community, and

YEA!: YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS ACADEMY
Early last month, students from all over the country gathered in Rochester, New York, for the YEA! National Saunders Scholars Competition. Zoe Bundy, a seventh grader from Discovery Middle School represented our local class and was a fantastic ambassador of the FMWF community. Zoe received a lot of positive reinforcement for her business, Brainy Ladies, a subscription-based website geared toward girls interested in STEM, and connected with other students who are interested in getting involved by subscribing or providing content! Upon arriving home, Zoe got right to work preparing her next presentation as she joins 2017 YEA! graduate, Fardosa Hassan, in speaking at 1 Million Cups! We hope you’ll join us in supporting both of these YEA! grads on Wednesday, June 6 at 9:15 a.m. at the Stage at Island Park.
“I walked into YEA! with no business idea, but a strong passion for girls in STEM. I walked out of YEA! as the CEO & founder of my own company.” – Zoe Bundy
We were thrilled to have three of our YEA! students at ChamberChoice this year. They had the opportunity to share information about their businesses and really enjoyed celebrating the accomplishments of local businesses, non-profits and entrepreneurs. We think it’s only a matter of time before we start seeing our YEA! grads nominated and accepting awards of their own!
Congratulations to the YEA! Class of 2018! This is an exciting time of year for us as we see another group of students emerge as young entrepreneurs and new professionals in the community. We are so proud of what these 14 students have accomplished throughout the last seven months and we know we’ll see great things from them in the future!

#FMWFLEADERSHIP
On May 10, the Leadership Fargo Moorhead West Fargo class of 2018 celebrated a successful year and completion of the program at their graduation luncheon at the Fargo Air Museum. Past graduates and sponsors of the program, including Brianne Hoffman, Doosan Bobcat, Chelsey Agather, Discovery Benefits, and Kevin Jordre, First International Bank & Trust, shared their experience and offered advice how to keep up their newfound leadership skills. Two current class members, Aaron Buffington, Microsoft, and Maggie Aslakson, Rasmussen College, shared remarks on what they’re taking away from the program and offered kind words and well-wishes for the class. Chris Carey, Moorhead Police, also delivered a keynote message. We’re honored to add these 38 graduates to the incredible roster of leaders who have come before them, and we’re excited to see what their future holds.
