PRESIDENT
FROM THE
Yes Votes Needed for Public Schools!
One of the most important pillars of creating a strong community is high-quality schools. The Fargo Moorhead West Fargo community is successful, due in large part to the high-caliber and innovative school districts we have in Fargo, Moorhead and West Fargo. We are supportive of all three of our districts and we applaud the work that they do. There is a very important vote coming up on March 7 to preserve the funding level for the Fargo Public School system, and I urge you to vote yes on this important issue. You may wonder why I am so supportive of the K-12 school systems. One of The Chamber’s top priorities, as identified by our more than 2,100 member organizations, is workforce development. We cannot continue to flourish in our metro if we do not have the highly qualified employees that we need. Chamber members recognize that they have jobs to be filled and many could expand if only we could attract the skilled workers necessary to fill those positions. Attracting employees can be quite a task, whether those people are returning to the area or are completely new. They evaluate not only their potential employer, but the community as a whole and what it has to offer. The K-12 public school systems we have offer exemplary education and opportunities to our students. Class sizes are small, educators are qualified and it is able to provide students with programs that match their interests that will serve them later in life through STEM programs, arts and skills training opportunities. Preserving the Fargo Public Schools is vital to the continued success of the community and it sends a message to potential residents that we care about the education that is provided to our students. On the other side of the workforce coin, we look through the lens of seeing our students as our future workforce. Setting our students up with the skills they need to be successful in a higher education environment or directly into the workforce is key to our success as a region. We want our students to be the most prepared they can be as they look to future endeavors within the labor market. Career and technical education opportunities that are provided by the Fargo Public School District, in partnership with business and industry leaders, allow students to advance their future and gain an understanding of our workforce. Voting yes on March 7 will allow Fargo Public Schools to maintain the quality education they provide. Class sizes will be able to remain small, students will have access to the educational opportunities that they have now and most importantly, we will be preserving a strong pillar in our community. Please consider voting YES on March 7 for continued excellence at Fargo Public Schools.

Tweets from last year’s event!
Economic Outlook Forum This year’s Economic Outlook Forum once again welcomed top national economist Dr. Jim Paulsen, who presented to nearly 600 attendees about national and global economic trends. But first, Marshal Albright of Cass County Electric, the event’s presenting sponsor, kicked off the afternoon with a brief welcome to attendees.
Then, Scott Green, market president at Starion Bank, shared the results of the recent FMWF Business Conditions Survey. Green noted that the trend seemed to be optimism and stability among businesses in our region.
The #1 factor expected to adversely impact business in the next 12 months was difficulty in attracting and retaining qualified employees. “In summary, we are fortunate to live in a vibrant community, but it does present challenges. Challenges that overall we can certainly handle,” Green closed with. Next, Paulsen took the stage and focused much of his presentation on the current global economic recovery, which he noted was in its eighth year, making it the longest one ever. He also noted that this recovery is the only one in U.S. history without confidence. “We’re overscared, but I think that’s about to change,” he said. Paulsen recognized was that the U.S. has returned to full employment. He also says that the housing sector is in really strong shape, and in the business sector, corporate debt to profit ratio is the lowest it has been since the 1960s.
up, and they’re at the point of starting to form households,” he said. A favorite moment for many attendees was Paulsen saying that we’re not in a bear market, nor a bull market, but rather, a bunny market – “one that hops around a lot and doesn’t go very far.” Overall, Paulsen presented optimism for our economy, and perfectly weaved humor into his points. We appreciate his willingness to come back for a second year, and we once again thank all of our sponsors for making this event possible.
Millennials play an important part in our recovery, too, and a large driver of growth. Employment among millennials is growing more than twice as fast as the national average. “You’ve got a group that is at the epicenter of incoming job creation, their confidence is

The Mayor’s Blue Ribbon Commission on Addiction is a local initiative responding to the opioid crisis and the larger issue of addiction in the Fargo Moorhead West Fargo community. Formed this past fall, the commission recently presented emerging recommendations for drug abuse prevention, early intervention, treatment and recovery. They have assembled an expert panel to provide perspectives specifically on the opioid crisis in our community. Panelists will present the magnitude of the problem, workplacebased early interventions, employer-led recovery efforts, and one parent’s heartbreaking story of loss. Don’t miss this chance to learn first-hand what some of our city leaders are doing to combat this serious issue for our community. Panelists include Jessica Woitzel, HR Director at Solid Comfort; Darrin Tonsfeldt, Diversion Director – Behavioral Health and Financial Services at The Village Business Institute; Chris Myers, U.S. Attorney for the State of North Dakota; and Mary Beth Traynor.
Behold the Bakken! A Look at ND’s Oil Market The oil industry has become the largest part of North Dakota’s economy and contributes the greatest LINDBERG NESET share of the state’s tax revenue. Its future affects investment, employment and public sector projects across the state. Where is it today and where is it going? Despite the downturn, there are many positive things happening in the Bakken. Current employment still exceeds 50,000 workers and some entities expect North Dakota production to grow to over 2 million barrels per day. Technology and communities are evolving, making the Bakken a better place to live and do business. Please join us to hear from Kathleen Neset, president of Neset Consulting Service, Inc., as she shares some of the newest technology being used in the Bakken that could have great impact on future development. Rob Lindberg, director and founder of Bakken Backers, will also join us to provide a clear view of what is happening in the Bakken and how its future will impact jobs and the state economy.

PUBLIC AFFAIRS
Chamber Day AT THE CAPITOL Last month, almost 100 Chamber members and Leadership participants loaded up on two buses and headed to North Dakota’s capitol for a day to observe the legislative process, meet with elected officials and voice our opinions on the issues affecting the FMWF business community. The day started with the option of a tour of the capitol building or sitting in on committee hearings, and the afternoon brought the opportunity to observe floor sessions and witness debates and voting on various bills. In the afternoon, we were able to meet privately with key elected officials to learn more about their priorities, stances, and ask questions. Governor Doug Burgum dropped in to discuss current hot topics such as the medical marijuana bill, drug addiction and sentencing, budget challenges, the ACA and health care, renaissance zones and technology. “Every business in America is trying to deliver a better product or service and do it more efficiently—essentially do
more with less,” he said. “We’re trying to change the mentality in the capitol that … it’s not about how big your budget is, it’s about how big your results are.” Next, the House and Senate Minority Leaders Joan Heckaman and Corey Mock joined us to share what they’re focused on, which also included the marijuana bill, health care and public policy. Speaking to Measure 5, Mock said: “All four legislative leaders in both chambers in both parties are committed to getting this done and getting it right. We made an agreement signing on to this. This is not an R or a D issue; it’s a state issue.” Then, Senate and House Majority Leaders Al Carlson and Rich Wardner discussed budget pains, but expressed optimism. They also gave kudos to North Dakota’s world-class universities and research institutions. We also heard from Sen. Ron Sorvaag for an appropriations update, who ended
the afternoon with a call to Chamber and community members to get involved by contacting your legislators on the issues you care about before they vote. “My standard is, I should be able to explain [how I voted]. You do get a lot of input, if you choose to use it.” Before heading back to Fargo, all attendees were treated to a reception at Bismarck’s Kelly Inn, where we continued conversations with legislators over dinner and drinks.

Tips for Finding the Fringe Hours from
Jessica N. Turner
We had a blast at January’s Women Connect with special speaker and national author and blogger Jessica N. Turner. 500 attendees gathered at the Holiday Inn to learn secrets for finding “fringe hours” to do what you love. Everyone received a free copy of Jessica’s book, “My Fringe Hours,” got an extra special dessert, and heard updates and announcements from the committee on how Women Connect is making a difference through monthly donations, and success stories from PUSH groups.
Just a few of Turner’s takeways:
We also thank everyone who brought personal care items, which were donated to the YMCA of Cass Clay.
• Most of us feel like we don’t have enough time, but it’s about how you choose to spend your time
• Find pockets of time that are underused, such as waiting in the doctor’s office, at your kids’ soccer practice, over lunch or even during your commute • Get up 15 minutes earlier to fit in time for you before you start your usual routine
“Research shows that those who leave for a lunch break are better at their jobs.”
• Ask for help with certain tasks so you can do the things that only you can do • Be prepared for unexpected free time (for instance, have a book ready instead of scrolling Facebook while waiting)
• You have to take care of yourself before you can help anyone else • Do things because you want to or need to, not because you feel obligated
“What fills you up? Do those things. Nobody is scoring your life with a report card.”
Congrats to these three attendees who won our Twitter contest for best photo with the desserts. Each received a free sign to hang in their office or home. 14 THE BRIDGE · MARCH 2017

Women Living a FastPaced Lifestyle: Are You Keeping Up?
Created for Kindness
Tuesday, March 28
Tuesday, April 25 3:30 to 5 p.m. Sanctuary Events Center
3:30 to 5 p.m. Sanctuary Events Center
People in today’s society focus on living a fast-paced life, and women in particular seem to fall in line with all that it has to offer — multitasking, lists and busyness. Dr. Ann Burnett, professor and director of women and gender studies at NDSU, will talk about her research into the fast pace of life, what it means for women leaders and whether or not “keeping up” is such a good idea. Dr. Burnett was born in Colorado, attended Colorado College for her bachelor’s degree in economics, and the University of Northern Colorado for her master’s degree in communication. She received her Ph.D. at the University of Utah, with a focus on jury decision-making. In addition to her interest in legal communication, Dr. Burnett also pursues research in interpersonal communication on how fast-paced lifestyles impact relationships. She is also associate director of an NSF ADVANCE grant, awarded to NDSU in fall 2008, targeted to recruiting and retaining more women faculty, especially in science and math. Burnett was appointed Faculty Athletics Representative in December 2015.
PHILLIPS
What if there really were a secret to happiness well within our grasp? Perhaps there is! We often think of kindness as something that flows from our surplus: our extra time, extra energy or extra resources, leaving us to ask how we can possibly give to others when we don’t have enough for ourselves. In this presentation, Nicole Phillips explores the chain reaction that happens within our bodies when we lead with kindness. While it seems like it should be entirely altruistic, study after study proves that the greatest benefits of kindness are actually in store for the giver. We were created to be kind, but it’s awfully hard to find our stride in life when we refuse to step into our eternal purpose. At this session, you’ll learn that there is indeed much you can do to create light in a dark world while adding great joy to your own life. Phillips is a champion for using kindness to overcome all of life’s difficulties, including her own battle with breast cancer. She spreads the message of the healing power of kindness through her public speaking and weekly column, “Kindness is Contagious,” which runs in newspapers in North Dakota and Minnesota.

A Day with Stevie Ray Last month’s training was certainly next level! Thank you to Stevie Ray, a national trainer and comedian, who stopped in from Minneapolis to present two special sessions to Chamber members. In the morning, we learned Next Stage Networking, followed by Next Level Communication in the afternoon. Each presentation had attendees laughing while learning valuable skills and information. Ray explained fascinating facts about how the brain works and how to use that to work with others, and sprinkled in just the right amount of fun group activities so we could put ourselves to the test. “The difference between networking and socializing is getting business,” Ray said. “Half the job of networking is being memorable.” Being a better networker and communicator does take practice, and Ray gave the audience several techniques and exercises to try, including two specific games that engage the whole brain.

YEA!: YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS ACADEMY
Finishing touches before…. Throughout the last month, we had 30 professionals come into the YEA! classroom to serve as guest speakers, CEO roundtable panelists, mentors and mock investors, plus nine graphic designers from MSUM and Office Sign Company who worked to develop logos, business cards and brochures for each student’s business. We were fortunate to have Tom Enright from GoodBulb and Heather Ostrowski from Preference Employment Solutions serve as guest speakers and Mike Dragosavich from Spotlight Media, Ryan Fritz from Office Sign Company, Paula Klein from Smartt Interior Construction and Ciara Stockeland from MODE serve on our CEO roundtable. We even had members of the YPN serve as mock investors as the students practiced their presentations. At this point in the program, the students have completed their business plans, and are switching gears and focusing on preparing for the Shark Tank Investor Panel competition. In addition to finetuning their presentation skills, the students will have a personal style & presentation workshop to help them look and feel their best when they are in front of the investors and the audience!

Their Moment in the Spotlight! The Young Entrepreneurs Academy class would like to invite you to the Shark Tank Investor Panel competition on Tuesday, March 28 at 6 p.m. at the Concordia College Offutt School of Business in Barry Auditorium! Since October, the YEA! students have been working hard on developing their ideas, conducting market research and writing business plans. Now, they’re ready to pitch their ideas to a panel of local investors and ask for real money as they prepare to launch real businesses. Although this program is not competitive in nature, there is a competition involved in this event. The student who wins this competition will advance to a regional competition in Rochester, New York, where he or she will compete to earn one of six spots in the National Saunders Scholars Final competition. 22 THE BRIDGE · MARCH 2017

LAST MONTH IN PHOTOS Eggs & Issues last month looked at North Dakota’s budget with Sheila Peterson, director of fiscal management for the state. Peterson shared where we are currently, what she sees coming out of this legislative session and what is on the horizon.
Business Training last month had attendees laughing while learning valuable skills in two special interactive sessions with national author, speaker and comedian Stevie Ray. In the morning, we learned tips to take our networking to the next stage, and in the afternoon, we learned communication tips, including how to work with any personality and deal with any situation.
We loved our time at February’s Business After Hours, where we once again mingled with attendees and exhibitors at the Holiday Inn. Thanks to Advanced Business Methods for sponsoring!
Thanks to all that participated in YPN’s events last month. We had a great time sharing more about The Chamber at Beyond the Blue Links, getting a behind-the-scenes look at the downtown fire station, and networking at Off the Clock at Sidestreet Grille & Pub.

KARLA SOLUM
is nothing short of inspiring. This young entrepreneur has many titles to her name and over 15 competition awards under her belt, and only at age 33. Solum is owner of EHP CrossFit and Elevate Human Potential in Moorhead—a facility that offers group training, personalized coaching, sports chiropractic and rehabilitation, 1-on-1 nutrition counseling and youth programs. And she does it all with the help of just three other coaches, a few interns and her mother, who helps out in the office. Solum is no stranger to the sports industry. She went to school initially for sports chiropractic, and soon began training athletes. When she wasn’t able to find a job in the area that fit her practice, she did what any motivated entrepreneur would do – she started her own business. Shortly into the journey, she noticed the need for a CrossFit facility in Moorhead (as all the others in town are located 26 THE BRIDGE · MARCH 2017
MEMBER PROFILE in Fargo), so she combined the two concepts into one building. Her passion for health is infectious, and it’s clear that she’s built a highly functional place for people to feel safe, welcomed and motivated. “I want to inspire people to be better than they were yesterday,” Solum said. “It doesn’t mean that you’re better than the person next to you. It means you’re better because you’re here, both mentally and physically. What we’re trying to do is elevate your human potential, and that’s where the company name came from.” Through her coaching, chiropractic and counseling, she is able to bring awareness and education to her clients and patients– and reminds that it also extends to what they do outside of the facility. “I like to educate my patients on what they can do outside my office to improve their health and well-being. What they do outside during the week is much more important than what they do while here.” Aside from educating her athletes, EHP CrossFit is also able to educate students through a 100-hour internship program that allows them to observe and critique others’ coaching, co-coach, and finally to coach on their own. Solum says many students do this program before they become CrossFit Level I certified. There are a few things that Solum says makes EHP unique. One is a focus on small class sizes with a limit of 15:1 athlete to coach ratio. She also places focus on learning proper motion before adding any weights. “Once you learn how to move your body in a more efficient way, what you can do with your body is endless,” she said. An additional benefit EHP offers to both members and non-members is access to a recovery room with stateof-the-art equipment. This includes a power plate, which is a full body vibration plate that allows for faster
recovery, decreases swelling in the legs and can increase bone density and mobility. Solum’s favorite item, though, is the NormaTec recovery boots that Olympic and beach volleyball athletes use, which offers a compressive massage on your legs to get blood flow back to your heart. EHP also utilizes an app called Wodify in which members can register for classes, sign in, review workouts for the next day and track personal accomplishments. Photo Courtesy of Tai Randall
What differentiates CrossFit from group fitness? “CrossFit is like a small group training session with a coach where everyone’s movements are reviewed. In group fitness classes, an instructor tells you what to do, but usually doesn’t tell you if you’re doing them right,” she said. Solum has seen countless success stories with CrossFit. Of course there are weight loss stories, but she’s also seen people struggling with addiction or depression excel in CrossFit because it offers a sense of satisfaction with exercise. “If I can make it through this workout, I can make it through anything,” she said. “That’s the power of CrossFit.” What keeps Solum motivated is being a strong female role model for others. CrossFit taught her that weight is just a number on the scale, and if she can teach others to view their body as a machine, you’ll treat it differently because you learn respect for it. “I played college sports, but I never knew what it was like to push beyond my comfort zone, and CrossFit taught me just that,” she said. “Now I’m able to push outside my comfort zone in business and my personal life.” Solum’s goals for EHP’s future include growing into a larger facility so they can hold multiple indoor classes at the same time, as well as partnering with local functional medicine practitioners so that all of an athlete’s needs could be met under one roof.
