a note FROM THE

PRESIDENT Events & programs fuel our future!

Our community continues to demonstrate amazing vitality in terms of participation in the many chamber activities that support and grow business. I’m sure much energy is generated by optimism for how the year 2018 continues to roll out. I’ll just mention that Business After Hours, Business Training, the Economic Outlook Forum and Eggs & Issues events earned attendance in the hundreds, with over 150 individuals participating in Women Connect. Of course we continue to welcome new members and host ribbon cuttings. Neither snow nor sleet nor rain keeps our members away! The information sharing, networking and business follow-ups to these events are the part of the fabric that binds our community in moving toward greater purpose and prosperity. Speaking of purpose and prosperity, the Fueling the Future initiative is moving forward to plan and accomplish an important objective in service to “the long view” discussed January in this column. Several community-wide conversations recently generated a vision and direction mandating a course of action to create an attractive, resilient and viable future for this region and the next generation. The work plan is certain to build upon “people, prosperity and place” – our place.

The important task of honing in on what must be accomplished, and when and how, is well underway with the explicit requirement that objectives be specific, measurable, attainable, repeatable as may be appropriate and time bound (SMART). In other words, accountability for Fueling the Future results are embedded in every program component. Because FTF is a first community-wide effort this millennia, the question was asked as to how it might share what seems like the crowded space of non-profits aiming to accomplish much on a stretched budget. The compelling answer is this: the net increase in economic growth and wealth associated with Fueling the Future lifts all boats. Moreover, an effective, sustained and trusted Fueling the Future business leadership team can be the sounding board on future community consensus decisions. That’s the promise of aligning efforts together, futuring together, to fuel Cass and Clay Counties purpose and prosperity. All aboard!

Stephen Moore Bullish on Economy At the 2018 Economic Outlook Forum, we were joined by national economist Stephen Moore, who shared a keynote address on national economic trends and his bullish opinions on where we are as a nation. He also shared much praise for North Dakota. “I believe you are one of the most prosperous and fastest-growing economies in the country, and I think that is going to continue for the next several years at least,” he said. “I am filled with good news today.” Moore discussed his relationship with Donald Trump, including the tax plan and setting the economic agenda. He included the importance of growth and how putting Americans back to work has to be top priority.

important thing that happened in America in the last decade. Speaking to taxes, he noted a trend in residents from typically blue states migrating to red states, due in large part to the appealing tax climate and right to work states.

Economic Outlook Forum

Moore’s prediction for 2018 is 3% to 4% growth due to the tax cuts and deregulation from the Trump administration. Prompted by one audience question about rising prices and supply and demand, Moore gave this thought: “I think we’re in a productivity revolution in this country because of robotics, automated cars, 3-D imaging, all this stuff is exploding. This is the single most exciting time to be on this planet.” Starion Bank’s Scott Green also presented on the results of this year’s economic survey from Chamber members. Of the respondents, most represented the service industry and were small businesses. Half reported experiencing employment issues.

The top five business challenges reported were competitive factors, employment issues, growing sales, economic uncertainty, and customer retention. Green noted a pressure being placed on workforce and signs of inflation.

Greg Rick, President

Rick Electric celebrated their 50-year anniversary with a “wire cutting” ceremony with Chamber ambassadors in 2014.

MEMBER PROFILE

Rick Electric, Inc.:

the Concordia College Offutt School of Business and UND School of Medicine, one of the largest construction projects in North Dakota.

A long-running Moorhead business has been a quiet staple in the fabric of the FMWF and surrounding communities for over five decades. Even now in their second generation, Rick Electric, Inc. is a humble family-owned and operated service company with down-to-earth employees and tried and true practices.

While they offer services for businesses, educational and government institutions, they also maintain a respectable offering for homeowners. Greg says some of the smaller projects they’re happy to do include those items on your honey-do list. “We have six qualified electrical servicemen with stocked vans scheduling those phone calls. A light fixture or a ceiling fan, things like that,” he said.

Serving the Upper Midwest Since 1964

Today Rick Electric, Inc. is run by Greg Rick, who serves as president, Denny Rick as EVP and secretary treasurer, and Eric Moe as VP. Greg and Denny’s parents started the company in 1964 as an electrical contractor. Greg has worked there his entire adult life, doing a range of jobs from estimator to project manager. He purchased the business with Denny in 1998. Many of Rick Electric Inc.’s employees have long histories with the business as well. With about 30 employees making up what Greg calls his “core crew,” seven have been there for over 10 years, five for over 20 and another five over 30. “In this industry, everything is about your people,” he commented. While the business is based in Fargo-Moorhead, they do plenty of business in the surrounding region – and states – too. In fact, one of their longest-standing clients is the Grand Forks Air Force Base. Greg’s favorite project was when they did 600 new houses and related electrical utilities. They’re currently working on the Best Buy remodel at West Acres and recently finished remodeling the John Carlson hockey coliseum in north Fargo. Locally, they also put their stamp on SCHEELS, Costco,

Throughout the years, they’ve monitored trends to be able to offer the services their clients need. The advancement of technology is the most profound change Greg can recall, including the “Internet of things,” modern security systems and cameras and LED lighting. The Rick Electric, Inc. crew operates on the most basic customer service principles, which is likely why they’ve gained such a reliable reputation. “Your word is your contract,” Greg said. “If we say we’re going to do something, we do it.” Looking ahead, Greg is concerned about the workforce and keeping young people interested in trades. To try and support those efforts, they offer a training program for apprentices to work during the day, go to electrical training school paid by Rick Electric, Inc. After the training is complete, they can take their State Electrical test to be a journeyperson and have no college debt. Other ways they support the community include donating to Minnesota Hockey Day, Habitat for Humanity and the Red River Zoo, and sponsoring various sports teams as they’re able to.   FMWFCHAMBER.COM · 11

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Office location: 25130 County Highway 6, Detroit Lakes, MN Leadership: Jeff Boehm, Paula Boehm, Stefan Boehm

“We purchased the Paul Davis franchise, an emergency fire and water restoration company, in 1995. As our company continued to grow, we decided to open another office in the Detroit Lakes market in 2001. After continued growth in the Detroit Lakes market, we decided to sell the Fargo location in 2005 and focus on increasing the market share in the Detroit Lakes area. Our focus in business was restoration of course. After we had completed the restoration process in those damaged properties, we were asked if we could help with their remodeling needs. So we started entering that market. The more projects we did, the more requests and referrals we had. Within a few years, the remodeling demands kept evolving. Next we were asked to build a new home and now new homes are another sector of our business. Moreover, previous clients who own businesses then asked if we could remodel their businesses so of course we were excited to fulfill their needs. What started as a restoration business has now evolved into a niche market of remodels, additions, new home builds and light commercial in the lakes area. Many Fargo Moorhead West Fargo area residents own lake homes and they need to be able to trust their contractor of choice. Paul Davis in Detroit Lakes understands all the building requirements and permitting processes required on lake properties. Paul Davis has transformed itself into a turnkey Design, Build contractor while still serving people in their time of need for fire and water restoration.”

What makes your organization unique? When you call Paul Davis Design Build, we are truly a “one call does it all” contractor from design through completion. We deal with the headaches of organizing all the details. We offer an inhouse design center where 3-D designs/layouts are produced and a showroom full of product to choose from. In addition, as a general contractor, we manage all aspects of the project through completion. What do you like best about doing business here? Unless you personally experience the true treasure of the area, it is really difficult to explain to others. As we have travel to other areas of the country, we return home feeling so grateful for the genuineness of the people and the strong economy. The resiliency of the people here is inspiring. What’s your best business tip? Find a need, fulfill the need, and do it with passion! Never, ever, ever give up! What do you like most about being a Chamber member? It is refreshing and motivating, connecting with like-minded people. It is like a “shot” of goodness when you surround yourself with others who share your business acumen.

EGGS & ISSUES

The Lowdown on the Diversion: February Eggs & Issues Recap

Last month, we sat down with Tim Mahoney, mayor of Fargo, and Del Rae Williams, mayor of Moorhead, who are outgoing and incoming chairs of the Diversion Authority, respectively. Attendees at this Eggs & Issues forum learned where the F-M Diversion project sits currently and what could be to come. Mahoney opened with comments thanking the community and Chamber members for their support of permanent flood protection and noted that it remains a continued priority. He mentioned some of the levees around the city, but noted they can’t keep adding more along the river because it impacts and eliminates several affordable housing options. They’re also conscious of flood insurance for residents. The F-M Diversion encountered a setback when the Minnesota DNR denied its permit application. A new permit will be submitted this year, and in the meantime, engineers are at work rearranging the alignment of the dam. Williams discussed the current litigation of the project, including the work from the Governor’s Task Force, and thanked Governor Mark Dayton for his support of the project and for the city of Moorhead. She also reminded that key to success is to continue working together. Audience had the opportunity to particitpate in questions and answers following the discussion. To follow along with Diversion updates, visit fmdiversion.com, watch social media and sign up for their newsletter.

LEADERSHIP

At February’s session, the FMWF Leadership class took a closer look at the industries that have been staples in fueling the metro’s economy: agriculture, technology and energy. We spent the day at one of North Dakota State University’s research buildings where we were fortunate to take tours of the research facilities NDSU houses. We had the unique opportunity to hear from both experts in the industry and experts in academic and research ends of these subjects. Class members were also given time to update their fellow participants on the progress they have made with their Community Change Initiative projects. As the end of our program draws near, our class has made some impressive progress with their projects. We can’t wait to see what they present at their final presentations in April. Danne is a member of the 2017-2018 FMWF Leadership class, and is the chair of the Corporate Cup committee for the second year in a row.

Danne Doering | Universal Banker | Choice Financial Danne was born in Fargo, attended high school in Hibbing, Minnesota, and came back to attend Concordia College. The versatility of her role at Choice Financial is why she loves it. “I love my position because it is always something different and love working for Choice because of our company culture of #PeopleFirst. I love that if I see someone in need of something I am empowered to help.” Outside of the office, Danne gives back to the community in a variety of ways. She serves as a Big Sister with Big Brothers Big Sisters in addition to serving on the Big Brother Big Sister Advisory committee. She also serves on the American Diabetes Association North Dakota Community Leadership Board. She says the impact attending Diabetes Camp as a kid had on her was so large that she needed to continue to help and promote the American Diabetes Association as much as possible.

Danne joined YPN when she started her first 8 to 5 job to build a professional network. After attending a few of YPN’s events, she knew that she needed to be more involved. “YPN was the perfect fit for me, everyone was like minded in building their professional network and so friendly and inviting as well. Corporate Cup is my favorite part of the YPN.” When Danne isn’t at a Chamber event, planning Corporate Cup or serving the community, she lives in Moorhead with her husband, Trevor and their doxie, Charlie. It takes a village

It’s hard to believe that our third YEA! class is almost ready to share their business ideas with the community! Throughout the last two months, our all-star team of mentors did a great job of helping each student finalize his/her business plan.

PROGRAM SPONSORS

After the last mentor meeting, we asked the students what they thought about their experience with their mentors. The students raved about the knowledge and resources their mentors had. One pointed out that his mentor knew information about his specific industry, market, etc., that would have taken him hours to research. Another student appreciated the contacts her mentor shared as she worked to interview different community members. Many of the mentors offered to continue to be resources for their students even after the program ended. Serving as a YEA! mentor is a big commitment and we are very thankful for the time and attention these individuals gave to our students. Not only did they answer questions, they served as sounding boards and advisors when their students started to feel stressed, and celebrated when their students overcame obstacles and accomplished their goals. In addition to our mentors, we had several fantastic guest speakers stop by to share valuable information with the class. We’d like to thank the following guest speakers for sharing their expertise: • Steve Welle, O’Keefe, O’Brien, Lyson, Foss • Dan Macintosh, Eide Bailly • Ryan Hoffman, Dawson Insurance • Tom Enright, GoodBulb • Blake Johnson, Ax-Water • Heather Ostrowski, Preference Employment Solutions

Finally, we had a great partnership with graphic design students from MSUM who made logos, business cards and brochures for each YEA! business. Check back soon to see what they came up with! Without all of our amazing volunteers, there’s no way we’d be able to accomplish all that we do in just 30 short weeks. If you’re curious about what these students have been working on, check out the next page for information on our upcoming Shark Tank event.
