Dear Chamber Members, For more than 20 years, The Chamber has recognized the outstanding businesses and organizations within the community that make a difference in our region every day. The ChamberChoice awards are an opportunity for us to shine a befitting spotlight on all the incredible member businesses who help our economy grow and thrive. Applying for the awards involves a rigorous process that begins with nominations, and I’m ecstatic to announce we received more than 450 nominations—an incredible testament to the engagement of our members and the vitality of our member businesses. As the 60 applications came pouring in at the end of March, we soon realized how lucky our community is to be home to so many exciting, worthwhile businesses, nonprofits and entrepreneurs. I do not envy the judges or their difficult task of evaluating the applications to determine the 2014 winners. Recognizing our members is a crucial component of our job as your Chamber of Commerce. We know how hard you all work, and we all enjoy one of the best local economies in the nation because you have mastered your work yet continue to innovate and inspire. Our hope is that all businesses, nonprofits and entrepreneurs involved with ChamberChoice — from nominees to candidates to finalists to the eventual winners — feel honored for the recognition received; it is well deserved and well placed. We’ve also worked this year to recognize past award recipients so the benefits of winning continue long after the luncheon concludes. Our six award winners have been profiled in past issues of The Bridge, and we highlighted a few winners from recent years in videos that have been posted online. I hope you’ve had a chance to watch those videos. A list of our past award winners is also available on on FMWFChamber.com under Events/Programs > ChamberChoice Awards. You can also watch the video from last year's show last year that featured all the candidates in each category. Please consider joining us on May 21 as we recognize the stars of our business community. The ChamberChoice Awards Luncheon promises to be a thrilling event with surprises, laughter and maybe even some tears. Thank you for your membership,
Craig Whitney President/CEO The Chamber

Local Leaders Share Savvy Strategies for Business Success Leadership is an art that involves many dynamic components; that is the conclusion four local leaders came to as they shared their wisdom on how to be a savvy leader in today’s business world. It’s important to strike a balance between actively engaging in a conversation and taking it over, Mike Artnson from Cardinal IG said, and being a mindful listener is indicative of a good leader, said Patricia Patron from Family HealthCare. Many leaders cited various tools to use within teams to determine strengths and leadership qualities; Jodi Duncan from Flint Communications, Inc., and Steve Swiontek from Gate City Bank both cited StrengthsFinder as a tool their organizations have implemented to help employees lead successfully. After sharing insights for more than an hour, the panelists offered their final thoughts on how to be an effective leader: §§ Take care of yourself. §§ Realize the strength of your team. §§ Love your employees to develop trust. §§ Appreciate your accomplishments but don’t forget there’s more to life.

Punishment for fraud is rare, as is recovering stolen funds. A business’s only viable course of action is prevention. In 2012, more than one million people fell victim to fraud incidents, losing more than $21 billion, according to the U.S. Department of Justice’s 2013 Identity Fraud Report. Here are a few more facts about fraud you may not be aware of: U.S. households that reported some type of identity fraud Average financial loss per identity theft incident Total financial loss attributed to identity theft in 2013 Total financial loss attributed to identity theft in 2010

Did You Know?
Credit card data theft is exploding, increasing 50% from 2005 to 2010, according to the latest figures from the U.S. Department of Justice.
Your business can protect itself, and Frank Abagnale will tell you how. One of the world’s most respected authorities on check fraud, embezzlement and secure documents, Abagnale has developed new procedures and created manuals and educational programs utilized by over 14,000 financial institutions, law enforcement agencies and corporations. What makes Abagnale an expert on fraud? He used to be a conman. His story about successfully posing as an airline pilot, an attorney, a college professor and a pediatrician, as well as cashing $2.5 million in fraudulent checks was retold in the Steven Spielberg film “Catch Me If You Can.” Once Abagnale has enlightened you on the latest scams to be on the lookout for, law enforcement agents and the Better Business Bureau will review case studies with local and regional connections of fraud schemes. Read about how the Better Business Bureau can help you protect your business and yourself when it comes to fraud incidents on page 26.

Minimum Wage Increase Takes Center Stage at Session
Minnesota businesses with gross sales exceeding $500,000 will likely phase in a dramatic increase in the state’s minimum wage. Legislation was agreed upon by Minnesota House and Senate DFL leadership that if passed, will increase the current minimum wage of $6.15 per hour to $9.50 per hour. Businesses with sales less than $500,000 will operate under a $7.75 minimum wage by 2016. Beginning in 2018, all wages would increase through an inflation adjustment called the implicit price deflator, similar to the Consumer Price Index. Wage growth will be capped at 2.5 percent. The increase is roughly the equivalent of a 31 percent increase on most businesses’ minimum employee cost. The Chamber supports efforts to raise the state’s minimum wage to the federal level of $7.25, absent an annual inflation adjustment.

Public Affairs Considers Conservation Amendment The Public Affairs committee met to study the Clean Water, Wildlife and Parks measure that is expected to land on North Dakota’s statewide ballot in November. The measure would amend the North Dakota Constitution to commit five percent of the oil extraction tax to a conservation fund. According to the coalition opposing the measure, the conservation fund is estimated to generate between $300 to $400 million per biennium.

Committee Chair Profile The Military Affairs committee fosters a community of support for the men and women of our military and recognizes these individuals. The committee helps raise awareness for their work and keeps a keen eye on advancing public policies that will advance our regions military units. Steve Blazek, senior vice president from First International Bank & Trust, has served as the committee chair since 2012. What have you enjoyed most about serving as committee chair of the Military Affairs committee? It has to be the “can do” attitude of the entire committee. If a need for a service member is presented or a challenge is brought to the committee’s attention, multiple hands get raised immediately with ideas and resources for support and resolution. It has been a very rewarding experience. What is one thing you would like other people to know about the Military Affairs committee? The Military Affairs committee has a mission, in part, to educate our community regarding current local military issues and to advocate for men, women and their families living in our community who serve in the United States Military. Why is it important to you to support the military men and women in the community? The men and women who wear the uniform are some of the most caring and devoted patriots you will ever have the pleasure of meeting. This country was founded with the strength of the people’s army who volunteer to be our first and last line of defense, whether it is fighting an adversary or fighting a natural disaster. Countless times our National Guard has given of themselves to our community first and their own needs second. In addition, the United States military is one of the largest employers in the area with more than 2,000 personnel and annual budgetary impacts of close to $100 million.

Leadership Class Serves Local Nonprofits Through Program Projects
Every year, an integral component of the Leadership Fargo Moorhead West Fargo program involves the nonprofit organizations that have applied for assistance from the class. Seven nonprofits are selected, and class members learn about each nonprofit’s needs before selecting a project to work on. Class members were organized into seven small groups, and work began in November. Last month, each presented its project to the class, employers, nonprofit representatives and Chamber staff members. The session was held at Cass County Electric Cooperative, Inc., and CEO Scott Handy kicked off the day with a welcome. Handy graduated from the leadership program in 1989, and he said he still enjoys many of the friendships he made during his time in the class.

Topics for the curriculum include understanding employment benefits, filing taxes, performance reviews, managing conflict in the workplace, communication styles, time management, healthy eating in a busy lifestyle and refining a professional image. In addition, the group provided a potential advanced curriculum that could be implemented in the future. The group also continues to explore a mentorship program that would connect a client with a woman in the business community.

Project Vision: Produce a strategic plan for developing a free program that delivers life-changing health and wellness information. The Essentia Health Regional Foundation wants to provide life-changing and life-saving information to the public but needs a network of resources to utilize to share the information through a speaker series. The group worked with the foundation’s executive director, Jon Benson, to develop a standard message for the outreach effort and contacted a variety of local organziations to gather interest in having the foundation provide a speaker at an upcoming meeting or event. The group ended up with a list of 15 organizations interested in the speaker series as well as connected the foundation with the local economic development corporation’s Speakers’ Bureau. Another deliverable of the project included a brochure to be used for marketing purposes. Benson said at the end of the presentation that the group’s work will have “immeasurable” impact on the foundation and its mission.

The group helped create more awareness of the sale through television and radio promotions as well as calendar event lists and social media promotion. Steph Melgaard, Midcontinent Communications Brittany Sickler, Small Business Administration Project Vision: Increase sales at the ReStore to support Lake Agassiz Habitat for Humanity’s mission of building simple, affordable homes in the area. What began as a directive to increase sales evolved into a project aimed at improving operational efficiency within the store as the pre-cursor to increasing sales. The group examined operational efficiency in three areas: personnel, volunteers and operations; recommendations were offered in each area, based largely on the best practices of other successful ReStores in the area and in Canada. The final deliverables included a new pricing model, grant information, volunteer applications and orientation sessions, updated job descriptions and contact information for networking purposes to generate public awareness of ReStore.

2014 Health Care Summit
Where We Came From and What Lies Ahead Featuring Betsy McCaughey, Keynote Speaker Tuesday, July 22 | 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Holiday Inn Fargo, 3803 13th Avenue South
Four years have passed since The Chamber hosted “Health Care Reform: Now That It’s Law.” Incredibly, few days have gone by without new developments on delays, definitions and deadlines emerging. The implementation delays have bought us time, but at the expense of massive confusion. Keynote speaker Betsy McCaughey will kick off the day by diving into the details of the health care law. McCaughey has been making history by reading every page of recent health care law, and she actually uncovered the provision in the February 2009 stimulus bill that could limit care for seniors and dictate doctor’s decisions. Her discovery and continued scrutiny has frequently landed her on Fox News, CNBC and daily radio talk stations as she dispels claims and offers ideas for navigating the complexities of the new health care law. McCaughey will give you the latest, inside-the-beltway information on the ever-changing employer mandate, court challenges to the law and explain what is likely to happen after the fall 2014 elections. Once McCaughey has wrapped up, you can attend a variety of breakout sessions, such as: Breakout Sessions (1:15 to 2:15 p.m.) Breakout A: Health Insurance Industry Panel: Navigators, Grandfathers, Mandates and More Industry leader’s perspective of what you REALLY need to know. Breakout B:
Worksite Wellness Strategies that Work Proactive or Reactive? What’s your organizational approach to managing increased utilization and skyrocketing premiums? These leading health promoters will inspire you to create lasting change within yourself and your organization.
Breakout Sessions (2:30 to 3:30 p.m.) Breakout C: The “We’ve Got a Plan Panel” for Employers with 50+ Employees The Affordable Care Act impacts every organization differently. Financial considerations, employee demographics, short-term and long-term goals contribute to developing a strategic response to the new world of health care. Large and mid-sized companies share their compliance strategies and insight into how they developed their plans. Breakout D:
Challenges, Questions and Decisions Unique to Small Employers Learn the answers to the questions that keep small business leaders awake at night. This informal breakout will include strategies for small business with an extended question and answer opportunity.
Closing Keynote (3:45 to 5 p.m.) Responding to the Transformation of Health Care Providers and partners preparing for the next generation of health care.

Better Business Bureau Helps Consumers, Businesses Avoid Fraud
More than 100 years ago, a group of business leaders in Minneapolis coalesced to form a self-governing entity that promoted an ethical marketplace and denounced substandard behavior. While the company’s presence has now grown to include the international marketplace, the Better Business Bureau’s mission of being a leader in advancing marketplace trust continues to guide its practices and services. One of its most well-known services is handling complaints filed by businesses and consumers; last year, the BBB of Minnesota and North Dakota handled 24,000 complaints with an 89 percent resolution rate, explained Chief Executive Officer Dana Badgerow. Filing a complaint is free of charge, and the company offers a helpline that is staffed 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with operators who can assist businesses and consumers with a variety of issues such as a potential scam or business/vendor Just like consumers, businesses are regularly targeted by scam research. artists. A crucial component of BBB being able to monitor the marketplace for ethical activity is cultivating a rich database of businesses; Badgerow said the Minnesota database is quite robust, but the company is working to shore up its North Dakota database. She encourages business owners to contact BBB to create a report for their business, which can then be promoted to consumers as a channel to provide customer reviews. BBB validates all consumer reviews to ensure the integrity of its reporting system by verifying that the consumer did indeed have a transaction with the company being reviewed. In addition, a consumer can’t file both a complaint and a customer review, further ensuring the validity of information provided. Companies can also benefit from BBB Accreditation, which is earned after meeting rigorous standards. Being accredited entitles a company to use the BBB logo on its marketing materials, website and vehicles, to signify its ethical practices. BBB regularly posts updates and alerts about scams in the area at bbb.org. If you encounter a suspicious offer, call 800.646.6222 to speak with a BBB representative.
For example, the “phony invoice scam” is a common scheme. Picture this: you receive a strange bill/invoice that can’t be matched with a purchase order or the “purchase” of a directory listing or advertisement. Scammers hope these bogus invoices will be thrown in a pile and get paid with the rest of your bills. You may be threatened with collection or legal action in an attempt to pressure you to pay a debt you don’t owe. The best way to beat the phony invoice scam is to: §§ Designate certain employees as buyers. §§ Train staff to flag suspicious bills and report unusual phone calls. §§ Verify all bills and credit card charges before paying them. §§ Know your rights. If you receive supplies or bills for services you didn’t order, don’t pay. §§ Don’t be bullied. Business owners should heed their instincts; if something sets off your alarm bells, there’s likely a good reason for it.
