a note FROM THE
PRESIDENT Another HOORAY for YEA!
There is no shortage of talent in our region, and right now I am more excited than ever, thanks to our Investor Panel Shark Tank event last month. This year’s crop of Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) students had quite the showcase of business ideas. Bridget McManamon, this year’s winner, is a great example of a talented, passionate and inspired young entrepreneur. In fact, that’s what all of our 17 students are. The range of their ideas touch many industries, from biodiesel to eco-friendly and local garden supplies, from cakes and protein shakes to software and apps— even creating products that are giving back around the world. It’s an honor to witness the incredible innovation these young people possess and watch their ideas come to fruition. The YEA! program is especially important to me as it cultivates an informed and inspired future workforce. It is our hope that many of our area students remain in the region. We have a vibrant and supportive business community, and YEA! helps expose those resources to the students.
It is also my hope that in time, many of the ideas coming out of YEA! become established businesses. We’ve already seen two successes from our very first year. Mukai Selekwa has taken on two business partners and is busy launching his social media management platform, Webblen, and Sydney Ulrich has sold numerous headbands to help fund breast cancer research.
I also encourage you to get involved in the program. If you know a middle or high school student who exudes the entrepreneurial spirit, they can apply for the 2017-18 class at fmwfchamber. com/YEA. If you’re interested or want to learn more about how your business can help as a guest speaker, tour host or mentor, please contact our YEA! program coordinator Katie Ralston.
But none of it would happen without the support of our local community. We’ve been lucky to have great volunteers that share their time and talents with our students. Cornerstone Bank has been especially invaluable as the program’s presenting sponsor. We’ve also seen incredible support from our local schools and business community. Likely as you’re reading this, Bridget is in New York pitching her business to a new audience. She is among more than 100 students nationally competing in the Saunders Scholars Semi-Final Competition. I wish her much luck, and have no doubt that amazing results will come from her business, Herstory. FMWFCHAMBER.COM · 5

Recapping the ND Oil Industry Through a series of slides, stats and commentary at April’s Eggs & Issues, we learned much more about the past, present and future of one of North Dakota’s most important industries: oil. Kathleen Neset, president of Neset Consulting Service, Inc., and Rob Lindberg, director and founder of Bakken Backers, both shared their expertise with the crowd for a great overview of our state’s most lucrative business. Neset covered what happens below the ground, including how the drills and wells actually work, as well as regulations and the technology that is used. She shared that we only recover about 8% of the oil in the Bakken right now. If we could get even just 1% more, it would account to more than 1 billion barrels of oil for the state. “Oil is in everything … it is everywhere, and we need it,” she said. “We need a balance between safe, effective capture of the resource and what is good for the environment.” Lindberg then covered what happens with oil above ground, including how prominent the oil from North Dakota is around the nation and world and how it is has made us more competitive. In fact, the Bakken is one of only three fields in the U.S. that have ever produced 1 million barrels a day. He also discussed how drastically shale increased job growth and raised per capita income. “We can’t convey the importance of the (DAPL) pipeline to our industry,” he said. “Imagine running every field in ND for agriculture without railroads. This is what DAPL is to us.” We also thank The Forum for coming out to cover this story, and to all the attendees for their great questions and participation.
Advocacy in Action Just one benefit of being a Chamber member is letting us work for you! When it comes to important legislative issues affecting your business, we step up to help. Here is just one recent example. “During this year’s 65th North Dakota legislative session, there were two House Bills that our company was opposed to. A call was all it took to get a meeting with Chamber staff. They researched the matters and wrote a letter to legislators expressing their position and encouraging a vote opposing these bills. I have no doubt the support provided by the FMWF Chamber was instrumental in obtaining a vote in favor of our position. I am grateful for their support and encouraged that The Chamber stepped up when I needed them. It’s just one example of why I love being a Chamber member!”
– Brad Holm, VP/General Manager, Beverage Wholesalers, Inc. To learn more about these and other benefits, call 218.233.1100 or visit fmwfchamber.com.

The 80 days of the North Dakota 65th Legislative Session has been nothing short of interesting. Budgetary times were uncertain, leaving many North Dakota citizens concerned. Our state has seen tremendous growth over the years as sales and use tax boomed with oil production and an influx of residents, but as markets change so too have the revenue dollars. Please join us to hear from legislators their thoughts of the session and what they hope to see moving forward. We’ll be joined by Rep. Al Carlson, House Majority Leader, Senator Jim Roers, Senator Judy Lee and others yet to be announced.

As the Minnesota legislature wraps up, there are exciting things to look forward to as a community. The legislature worked with a surplus this session that brings with it many opportunities but also a set of obstacles as agreements are made and priorities are being set. With lawmakers working diligently in the interests of their constituents, they continue to make smart choices that move the state forward. We are honored to host Senator Kent Eken, Representative Paul Marquart and Representative Ben Lien as they share with us the work they were able to accomplish this session. If you have a question you would like to submit to our speakers, please email epeterson@fmwfchamber.com.

Building strong relationships takes an investment of time, mutual respect and genuine interest. Building positive workplace relationships is vital for career success and is very rewarding personally. Relationships can positively or negatively affect your satisfaction with your job and your ability to advance in your organization. An authentic relationship is based on respect and mutual trust. In the workplace, these qualities are essential for effective teamwork and collaboration.
Throughout our lives, we regularly face situations that have the potential to be life changing. Whether it is a decision that can send us down a new path or an interaction that changes a relationship, our lives are full of crucial moments. Unfortunately, there is less flexibility for missteps in some situations, like the workplace. We often find ourselves “playing it safe” to avoid taking risks that have irreversible consequences. Although it is wise to be careful about what we say and do, we also must consider the significance of doing or saying nothing.
Come to this session to hear from Tonya Stende, president of Dale Carnegie Business Group of North Dakota and North West Minnesota, and Kristi Huber, president, United Way of Cass-Clay, and learn how to keep your interactions with others impactful, intentional and engaging.
When was the last time you engaged in a crucial conversation and how did it go? This session is designed to help participants gain a better understanding of their core values, consider the opportunities for crucial conversations and develop strategies that can be implemented in their daily lives. Dr. Stephanie Ahlfeldt is an associate professor of communication studies and the department chair of the Communication Studies and Theatre Art department at Concordia College.

Panelists include Michelle L. Colvert, employment representative, CCRI; Shelby Cochran, director of operations, dogIDs; Annie Wood, director of community relations, Emerging Prairie; and Christie Evanger, manager of nurse education, Essentia Health. According to a recent report, millennials could become the most productive generation with the right combination of management and motivation. Millennials, the generation born between 1980 and 1996, are influential by virtue of their sheer numbers and their remarkable cultural and technological impact on society. By 2020, millennials are projected to eclipse the Baby Boomers in size, and currently 58% of the workforce consists of millennials, according to Pew Research. It’s no wonder, then, that organizations and their leaders are realizing the importance of engaging millennials in the workplace. This is also why retaining employees has never been more imperative. We know that millennials have had a different upbringing than past generations, and that they differ in their expectations of themselves and others. At this session, Tamara Anderson of Dale Carnegie ND and MN and Brein Haugen of Rasmussen College will discuss strategies for understanding and retaining millennials, as we look at qualitative research. Why attend? • Understand why millennials are leaving companies • Identify action steps you can implement right away • Hear directly from some of our region’s working millennials as they share their perspective

YEA!: YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS ACADEMY
What You Missed at the Shark Tank Investor Panel Just as our April Bridge went to print, our Young Entrepreneurs Academy students went in front of a panel of investors, pitched their business ideas and asked for funding as they prepare to launch real businesses! So, in case you missed the Investor Panel Shark Tank, here’s what happened.
Bridget McManamon, a junior at Moorhead High School, was selected by the investors to represent the Fargo Moorhead West Fargo YEA! class at the Saunders Scholars National competition in Rochester, New York this month. Bridget’s business, Herstory, aims to raise awareness and access to hygiene products for underprivileged girls in our community. She will sell memberships in 3, 6 or 12 month increments and will use the membership fees to supply a girl in need with hygiene supplies for that length of time. Next month, you will get to learn more about Bridget, her business and her experience in Rochester at the national competition!
PRESENTING SPONSOR
Our 17 YEA! students each had five minutes to pitch their ideas to a panel of nine investors and nearly 200 audience members. After their presentations, they fielded questions from the investors. Investors and audience members alike were impressed by how poised and polished these young CEOs were!

Once again, Dan Michaels was a fantastic host for this event. He kept the show moving and the audience entertained. Jeff Thomas spoke on behalf of Cornerstone Bank, presenting sponsor of YEA!, and Brewer Doran from the Concordia College Offutt School of Business welcomed everyone to the event’s host venue, Barry Auditorium. We also heard from Josh Teigen who is serving as the YEA! instructor for the second year. This year’s investors were: Dean Bresciani, North Dakota State University; Brewer Doran, Concordia College Offutt School of Business; Ryan Grussing, Cornerstone Bank; Jenni Huotari, Eide Bailly; Dan Hurder, Barbacoa, The Boiler Room, Twist; Sandi Piatz, Microsoft; Dan Staller, Starion Bank; and Marsha Weber, Minnesota State University Moorhead. Together, they learned about tech-based businesses and apps, clothing products and food, eco-friendly initiatives and charitable causes, and awarded over $6,800 in startup funding to our young entrepreneurs! One student was also offered a scholarship to participate in uCodeGirl as she included her hope to participate in that program in her pitch. Thank you, Betty Gronneberg and uCodeGirl for your generous support!

One example is educating the public on modern agriculture. What is the best professional advice you have ever received? There are always opportunities to make improvements in what our organizations are doing. Take the time to look for those sometimes hidden and obscure opportunities and then take the initiative to jump in and make it better.
Agribusiness Update The Agribusiness committee was happy to host North Dakota Agriculture Commissioner, Doug Goehring, at their April meeting. Commissioner Goehring touched on a variety of topics ranging from changing crop prices to environment regulations on the federal and local level. The North Dakota Department of Agriculture provides over 100 programs and services to the public focusing on plant industries, pesticide and fertilizer and livestock services.
Did you know?
• Agriculture supports almost 25% of our state’s workforce. • North Dakota produces more than 50 different commodities and leads the nation in the production of wheat (spring & durum), sunflowers, peas, canola, flaxseed, dry edible beans, malt barley and honey. • North Dakota products are exported to 84 different countries including China, Fiji, Sweden and South Africa. Established in 2000, Kinetic Leasing is a general equipment financing company headquartered in Fargo, with sales offices in Eden Prairie and Marshall, Minnesota. They specialize in providing flexible, creative financing solutions of $5,000 up to $5,000,000 to middle-market businesses and municipalities. In 2005, they were awarded ChamberChoice Small Business of the Year. In October 2015, Kinetic Leasing moved into a brand new, 9,000 square foot corporate office building at 2575 41st Street South in Fargo. Here’s what else Al Hintz, president, told us. What makes your organization unique? There are a lot of equipment financing companies out there. Most of them only work with a specific industry (niche) such as medical equipment suppliers or require an “A” credit rating. One of the reasons that Kinetic Leasing has grown so fast is because we help all types of businesses finance virtually all types of new and used equipment. Are there any initiatives you’re focusing on right now? We are offering FMWF Chamber members pre-approval for up to $50,000 in equipment financing. Only a signed credit application is required. (Some exclusions do apply. Contact Kinetic Leasing at 701.476.0221 or sales@kineticlease.com for details.) What do you like best about doing business in Fargo Moorhead West Fargo? Great workforce to draw from and the ability to develop long-term relationships with customers. What is one thing you most want others to know about you? By the end of the year, we expect to reach a major milestone of having provided $1 billion in equipment financing to our customers! This puts Kinetic Leasing in the top 100 U.S. based equipment financing companies. What’s your best business tip? It takes years to build your reputation, but only one bad experience to ruin it. What do you like most about being a member of The Chamber? [It’s a] very active association with opportunities to meet customers and showcase our services.
Want to See Your Business Here? We’re looking for small businesses in current good standing with The Chamber that have a unique offering, interesting history or are just doing something spectacular. Tell us who you think deserves to be featured! Fill out the form at bit.ly/BridgeMS to suggest a business, or email ahofland@fmwfchamber.com. FMWFCHAMBER.COM · 25
Hannaher’s can bring design and function to any workplace. From innovative and collaborative work space design to a basic office chair and everything in between, this team prides themselves in engineering an environment where you and your team can do your best work.
company changed its name to Hannaher’s in 1964. A few decades and a new building later, the next evolution came in 2011, when they acquired Gaffaney’s of Grand Forks. Since then, they’ve also opened another location in Detroit Lakes, now enabling them to serve further into Minnesota.
The Hannaher’s office in Fargo – just next to I-29 off of Main Avenue – also serves as a showroom, and it’s hard to not get excited about the possibilities just by stepping in the door. In fact, it’s a new building, built just for them. Since last September, they’ve been using the new space to show off product and design options—and everything you see in there is something they can offer your own organization.
Now, Hannaher’s also has their own commercial flooring division and is placing a larger focus on technology, offering work tools like room scheduling devices. Of course, they also offer a wide range of items to enhance employee well-being and make space more efficient and flexible, including adjustable-height work stations, moveable wall systems and seating for a variety of work environments.
While Hannaher’s is still a familyowned business, it’s definitely not your father’s office supply company anymore. Today, Paul Hannaher is at the helm, and the business has evolved throughout the years. It started as Ridley’s in 1939 with Paul’s father Tom joining the company in 1959. The Moorhead

marketplace, providing the highest level of service, and knowledgeable partnerships for our customers. Outside of the workplace, it’s also important for them to serve their community. Hannaher’s promotes a family-first atmosphere and encourages team members to be involved in service clubs and civic groups. They also give back by partnering with the local schools and universities, the United Way and Sanford Health Foundation. Going forward, Paul says technology will be an integral part of the business, and they will continue to focus on giving employees resilient workplaces that provide a choice in how, when and where they work. “It’s really changing the way people work. This is all about retaining, hiring and attracting employees. Creating thoughtfully-curated workplaces will become destinations where people actually want to work.”
