YPN Events

Message to Members Dear Chamber members,

November is an exciting time. Many associate it with the beginning of the holiday season, but we at The Chamber are especially excited when November rolls around because it brings about an event that epitomizes the American democratic system: Election Day. Four years ago, The Chamber embarked on a strategic mission to ramp up public policy efforts to ensure our business community had a voice, a champion and an advocate when it came to legislation that would affect commerce in the region. Through our efforts, we have advocated for a variety of important issues, whether that meant taking a stand for or against contested legislation. This year is no different. In our Advocacy in Action section on page 8, you will find that The Chamber has taken a position on two of the eight ballot measures voters will be presented with on Election Day (and earlier for those participating via absentee ballot or early voting). We are proud to present these positions because they have not been taken lightly and because we are truly concerned about the ramifications of the measures. While we encourage you to read about positions on these two measures, we also strongly encourage you to learn about all of the measures as well as candidates up for election in your local districts. An educated electorate is critical to the continued success of our region and country. Please exercise your right to vote, if you haven’t already. It is a privilege protected and defended every day, and we would be remiss to not participate in the democratic process. Thank you for your membership,

Craig Whitney President/CEO The Chamber

Why Not Your Best? With amazing humor and down-home common sense, Terry Bradshaw looks at attitude, adversity and relentless competition and what makes us successful. A larger-than-life personality known for his energy, zeal and enthusiasm both on and off the field, Bradshaw is an American icon. From his achievements as a Hall of Fame quarterback and two-time Super Bowl MVP, to his celebrity success as television’s preeminent football analyst, best-selling author, television and film actor and gospel singer with three hit albums, Bradshaw is a beloved household name who came from humble beginnings to achieve astounding success. Having reached the pinnacle of professional accomplishment and survived the depths of depression, Bradshaw talks about sacrifice, pain, competition and adversity. He illuminates how he used the power of positive thinking to reach levels of success he never dreamed possible. Admired for his unvarnished honesty and colorful style, Bradshaw is a three-time Emmy Award-winning co-host of America’s most-watched pregame show, FOX NFL Sunday. New Program to Focus on Developing, Connecting Women Mission Statement: To connect women in a unique forum that will build connections, foster long-term relationships and encourage leadership in business and in life. Because The Chamber understands the important and influential role women play within their organizations, we are launching a new program that supports women in business with learning and leadership development opportunities. Women Connect will address unique challenges professional women face in today’s business environment and provide connections, inspiration and an opportunity to socialize with and encourage one another, tapping into the sense of community women crave. The program is set to launch January 27, and will consist of speakers, skill-building and hot topic forums. All sessions will involve round table discussions so attendees can increase their understanding of the content shared through the perspective of other participants. This format provides opportunities for shared learning and growth and encourages organically-built mentoring relationships. Each session will be limited to 70 participants and will be held the fourth Tuesday of each month at the Fargo Country Club from 3:30 to 5 p.m. followed by a social until 6 p.m. The social after each event will provide attendees with an Presenting Sponsors opportunity to connect with other women at a deeper level and develop lasting relationships that will extend beyond a single session. SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY速

Helping small businesses do more business American Express founded Small Business Saturday in 2010 as a way to help businesses attract more customers. While the day encourages people to shop at small businesses on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, the concept has grown into a powerful movement. This year, the big day is November 29. The Chamber is proud to represent both small and large businesses, and we support Small Business Saturday as a way to increase awareness and support of small businesses that are making an impact in our community.

No on Measure 5: $4.8 Billion Is Too Much

Measure 5 proposes diverting 5 percent of North Dakota’s oil and gas extraction tax to create a new fund that would be used to protect our outdoor heritage. Conservation is an important civic responsibility we all care deeply about; in fact, The Chamber has a position on the issue in our 2014 and soon-to-be-released 2015 Public Policy guide. The Chamber is opposed to Measure 5, not because we don’t care about our environment, but because it defies a responsible approach to fiscal management. The constitutional amendment would mandate 75 percent of the funds be allocated each biennium, an amount estimated at $300 to $400 million. Voters would not be able to address the fund for 25 years. During that time, nearly $4.8 billion dollars of state resources would be allocated to conservation projects.

Chamber Supports Lower Prescription Drug Prices: Yes on Measure 7

Current law requires North Dakota pharmacies to be majority-owned by a licensed pharmacist. The restriction prevents Chamber members like Walmart, Walgreens, Sanford Health and Essentia Health from owning and operating pharmacies. The Chamber Board of Directors voted in October to support Measure 7. “We believe passing Measure 7 will improve patient care and provide more opportunities for NDSU pharmacy graduates to stay in North Dakota. We are fortunate to have some of the best health care in the country and coordinating pharmacy services is well within their scope of care,” said President/CEO Craig Whitney. The Chamber supports a “yes” vote on Measure 7 in November. “The law passed in 1963. Those were the days! A gallon of gas cost 31¢ and a gallon of milk cost 49¢. Stores were closed by North Dakota law on Sunday – all day. Medicare hadn’t been invented, yet. The pharmacy law is out-of-date,” explained Connie Nelson, a member of The Chambers’ public affairs committee.

Serving with Heart

Have you ever been to a restaurant or a retail store where within seconds of being waited upon you can tell that employee is not happy to be at work today? How did that impact your customer experience? Customer service expert and bestselling author Shep Hyken defines customer service as “the experience we deliver to our customer. It’s how we make them feel when they do business with us.” Therefore if we want to leave our customers feeling wowed, satisfied, impressed, happy, etc. it’s not just about serving with our hands, it’s serving with our hearts. Serving with H.E.A.R.T is not a complicated system or technique; it is about authentically serving your customers and finding joy in your job. Here are some quick tips of customer service from the H.E.A.R.T. § Hospitality: Be inviting, acknowledge your customers and make them feel welcome. Let them know you are excited to serve them. § Enthusiasm: Do things with passion. Add energy to your work and find out what you love to do. When you are excited, your enthusiasm becomes contagious to your customers. § Attitude: Your mindset is everything. How you think about your job impacts how you carry out your job. Focus on the opportunities. Focus on solving problems. Focus on actions and accountability. § Respect: The customer might not always be right, but they always deserve our respect. I always go back to what my parents and grandparents taught me about following the Golden Rule and using your manners when it comes to customer service. § Thankful: Be thankful not only for your wonderful customers, but also the weary customers who let you know when their expectations have not been met. Don’t take your customers for granted. Stand out and take time to thank them. Article written by Dawn Kaiser, The Village Business Institute.

Introducing the Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) The Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) is a ground-breaking and exciting program that transforms middle and high school students into real, confident entrepreneurs. The program runs during the school year and gives students in grades 6-12 the opportunity and skills to generate business ideas, conduct market research, write a business plan, pitch the plan to potential investors and launch the company. In addition, students learn from local business leaders and visit companies in the area to learn more about becoming a successful entrepreneur. The Chamber is excited to launch the program, which will begin accepting applications for the 2015-16 academic year in November. YEA! was originally developed at the University of Rochester in 2004 with support from the Kauffman Foundation, a private organization that aims to help individuals attain economic independence through entrepreneurial success. Elly Peterson from The Chamber will serve as the program coordinator for YEA! Peterson has been working with local schools to gauge interest and support for the program, which will be promoted in both public and private schools in the area. The program will be capped at 24 participants.

What Will Students Learn?

YEA! is designed to give students not only the business acumen necessary to create and manage their own company, but the discipline, confidence and values needed to succeed in all areas of life. The program offers students: § Skills such as planning, public speaking, networking, creative problemsolving, conflict management and team-building. § An understanding of how education is applied in the real world of business. § The opportunity to build relationships with business leaders in the community. § Increased self-esteem by realizing the power of their own ideas and creativity. YEA! won’t just help students; the program also helps the community by cultivating the passion and natural creativity within youth and guiding it into a productive venture. The program brings together individuals from higher education, business and nonprofit sectors to give students a well-rounded perspective on the realities of entrepreneurship.

Last month, The Chamber officially launched the Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) at a press conference attended by local media, school administrators, higher education officials, Board of Directors and many others.

12 | November 2014

More than 1,500 students have graduated from YEA! and launched more than 1,000 enterprises.

Fun Facts about YEA!

How Is YEA! Different?

YEA! is unlike any other program for youth because of its real-world application and long-term involvement. The exercises are not just simulations; they are preparation for the actualities of business ownership and management. Other programs directed at young entrepreneurs can serve as a feeder for YEA! by identifying students who are enthusiastic and successful with entrepreneurial activities. Rather than discussing concepts and careers within business, YEA! guides students through each step of creating and launching their own, real enterprise, in a fun, projects-based approach. The YEA! program puts students on a path to college and career success and enables students to transition successfully to adulthood; achieve higher financial literacy; develop business acumen; build character based on personal principles and values; connect to local business leaders and become involved in their communities and pursue their dreams by harnessing their creativity and energy. The Academy also creates a culture of innovation in schools and communities across the nation; and fosters an innovative and entrepreneurial mindset in young people, educators, and community members. To learn more about YEA! and how you can get involved, contact Peterson at 218.359.0512 or epeterson@fmwfchamber.com.

YEA! has a proven track-record across the nation in building leaders of tomorrow while promoting the spirit of enterprise. Being involved with YEA! means students achieve higher financial literacy, better academic performance and inspire their communities and peers alike.

Leadership Fargo Moorhead West Fargo

Leadership Class Experiences Education Firsthand

For the fifth year in a row, the Leadership Fargo Moorhead West Fargo (LFMWF) class focused on education in October by visiting at Madison Elementary School in Fargo. We partner with Junior Achievement to facilitate hands-on, experiential lessons that teach key concepts of work readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy to grades K-5. To make the day even more entertaining, students dressed the part for their dream professions, which included soldiers, chefs, doctors, police officers and our favorite, a butler! The impact was not only seen with the students, but with the LFMWF class as well. Many participants gained appreciation for our educators and were pleasantly surprised with the creativity, intelligence and excitement the students possessed. LFMWF class members also toured and participated in a service learning project at the Great Plains Food Bank, a division of Lutheran Social Services of North Dakota. Caroline McGuire, volunteer coordinator, gave participants a tour and facilitated the filling of the backpacks for the weekend BackPack program. This program delivers backpacks to students in need filled with cereal, bread, peanut butter, jelly and other minimal preparation foods. More than 52 percent of students at Madison Elementary School receive a backpack each Friday, so the impact the LFMWF participants had on the students went far beyond the classroom. To keep on the topic of education in our community, participants heard from President John Richman of North Dakota State College of Science, President Anne Blackhurst of Minnesota State University Moorhead and President Bill Craft of Concordia College about how local higher education institutions are preparing the next generation of the local workforce. The eventful day ended with nonprofit representatives presenting project proposals to the class. Part of the nine-month curriculum requires that participants work in small groups with a nonprofit organization on a service project. The skills, talents and passions the LFMWF participants help make a significant, positive impact on each of the nonprofit organizations. Thank you to the following nonprofits for applying and congratulations on being selected to participate: §§ Emergency Food Pantry §§ Faith Lutheran Church/Journey in Faith §§ Farm in the Dell §§ FM Coalition for Homeless Persons §§ Make-A-Wish Foundation of North Dakota §§ Red River Zoo §§ Youthworks

I also enjoy planning the sessions for the program each year. Because the program format changes from year to year, we have an opportunity to tailor the classes’ experience to what is currently happening in and around our community. What is one thing you would like other people to know about the Leadership Fargo Moorhead West Fargo program? One thing everyone should know about the program is that each month is organized around a particular theme that is relevant to our community. This means that the local speakers and activities will support this theme. For example, November’s theme is entrepreneurship, and December’s theme is volunteerism and diversity. This is an example of how robust the program’s curriculum is and what a wealth of knowledge the participants are exposed to.

Become a Magnetic Company Through Respect When employees identify the most important aspects of being engaged at work, compensation and benefits fall to the bottom of the list. At the top of the list? Respect. That’s the conclusion Pam McGee from Minnesota State University Moorhead and her research team came to after surveying hundreds of employees in a variety of companies spanning 10 countries. McGee explained that the research about employee engagement focused on identifying key themes demonstrated by magnetic companies—those employers that naturally attract and retain loyal, productive employees. Those themes included: § Purpose trumps pay. § People crave balance over flexibility. § Profitability requires hard decisions. Becoming a magnetic company can be boiled down into four steps: 1. Clarify purpose. 2. Inspire people. 3. Simplify processes. 4. Drive profit. McGee returned to the issue of respect by explaining that recruiting and retaining great employees boils down to demonstrating true compassion and care for the employees.

TRS Industries: Quality Craftsmanship for Four Generations What do you do with 30,000 gallons of petroleum-based chemical from a train crash? That was exactly the question authorities and regional experts in Plummer, Minnesota, had to answer in 2012. The spill, which was the result of a semi and train collision, took more than a month to get completely cleaned up. It’s not hard to imagine the process was a team effort from beginning to end but what might surprise you is one of the unlikely contributors, TRS Industries Inc., a local tarp manufacturer located in Fargo. The company was asked to create a 200 by 400 foot tarp that would line the ground where the contaminated soil would be moved to. To put the size of the tarp into perspective, the FARGODOME claims the same amount of space for their main arena floor. Not only did the tarp need to be large, it needed to be done quickly and with quality in mind. All the seams needed to be watertight to prevent any of the chemicals from leaking into the ground. TRS had less than a week to build and deliver the tarp to stay on deadline. They ordered their fabric on a Friday, got the shipment in on Monday and started working. By Thursday (a day before their deadline) the tarp was ready and on it’s way to Plummer.

The 80,000 square-foot tarp during production in the TRS warehouse.

By the time it was done, the tarp weighed 6,000 lbs. and took two forklifts to load it onto the trailer. They even had to fold it a certain way so it wouldn’t tear when it was unloaded at the site. TRS did all of this in a matter of four days. This story is a testament to TRS Industries’ commitment to quality and customer service. On a typical day, you’ll find this four-generation family-owned business creating boat covers, rollup tarps for agriculture trucks and trailers, bee nets for transportation purposes, unique advertising projects, stage backdrops and just about anything else that can be made from large-scale canvas. Their process has changed a lot over the years, including automated cutting and measuring equipment, but one thing has remained the same since the Cossettes started repairing tarps in their garage: everything they do has to be top quality. TRS takes pride in what they do whether they are working on a boat cover, stage backdrop or even an 80,000 square foot tarp.

Rich Cossette, TRS Industries president, stands next to the completed tarp before it's sent to Plummer, Minnesota. TRS Insustries was started in 1983 in Roger and Claudia Cossette’s garage. Soon after, their son Rich, joined them and today, it’s a fourgeneration company. If you stop by for a visit, you're likely to find Rich, his wife Joy, their children and grandchildren, along with aunts, uncles and cousins. It’s truly a family business.

Scandia Hotel Offers Family Members of Patients Convenient Place to Stay

At Scandia Hotel, family comes first. That mantra applies to the family that has been running the business for nearly 30 years, the employees who have become like family as well as the customers who are treated like family whenever they stay at the quaint, quiet hotel across the street from Sanford Health’s hospital on Broadway. A common misconception about the hotel is that it is owned by the hospital, given its close proximity. Not so. Managing Partner Doug Halverson’s family has owned and operated the hotel since 1984; Halverson’s father, Hans, named the establishment Scandia out of pride for his Norwegian heritage. Halverson’s brother and sister are part of the business, but he manages the property on a day-to-day basis. “It’s about family here,” Halverson said. “I just hired a bookkeeper I’ve known for years and when she told me her son had an activity during the day, I told her she needed to be there for her son. Family comes first.”

Scandia Hotel Numbers 4 floors 57 rooms 10 rooms with full kitchens 6 handicap accessible rooms $59 per night

Because the majority of the clientele include individuals with family members in the hospital, extending that principle to them is extremely important. “Our number one priority is to take care of the families of patients in the hospital,” Halverson said. If you’re at the Scandia Hotel, don’t be surprised if you see some people in medical scrubs. Sanford leases conference rooms in the hotel’s lower level as well as space on the main level for clinical research offices.

Front Desk Manager Michelle Sinkler explained that prioritizing family members of patients means the hotel is careful about making rooms available to the public when an event or concert comes to town. She said the hotel will release rooms to the public only after all patient family members have been accommodated.

“It’s clean and friendly,” Sinkler said about the hotel and its staff. “We care and people see that.” Halverson echoed those thoughts. “We treat people how we want to be treated; we treat people well,” he said. Because of the circumstances that bring many patients to the Scandia, staff members have an opportunity to get to know them, often personally. “We laugh and cry with them.” Sinkler said she still gets a Christmas card from the wife of a man who passed away years ago from cancer, and she had stayed at the Scandia. Other stories are happier—like the one about a couple who stayed as they waited to adopt a baby or a mother who stayed while waiting to give birth to multiples. Scandia is all about creating an atmosphere where family members are welcome and comfortable. The hotel offers Internet, vending, security and convenience to downtown Fargo for shopping and eating.

NerdWallet, a consumer advocacy website, recently conducted a study to find the fastest-growing cities in North Dakota – and West Fargo ranked seventh. To find North Dakota’s fastest-growing communities, NerdWallet evaluated 24 cities, towns and census-designated places and examined the following variables: population growth, employment growth and income growth. Although not as well known as nearby Fargo, West Fargo isn’t a city that should be dismissed. As the fifth-largest city in the state, West Fargo is part of the greater growth trend in the Fargo Moorhead metro area. The city outpaced Fargo in growth, adding over 2,000 working-age residents from 2009 to 2012, and the most recent data found an unemployment rate of just 1.6% in West Fargo. Wyoming topped the list, with Pennsylvania at No. 2. The lowest-ranked state in the list, which includes the District of Columbia, was North Carolina, followed in rising order by Mississippi, West Virginia, South Dakota and Hawaii.

Take Time to Honor Veterans on November 11 Ninety-six years ago, on November 11, an armistice between Germany and the Allied nations went into effect, ending World War I. Eight years later, the U.S. Congress recognized that important day and requested that the president issue a proclamation to nationally observe the sacrifice of those who died in service to the country, according to the website U.S. Federal Holidays. For years, the holiday was known as Armistice Day but after World War II, the commemoration was changed to Veterans Day in honor of all Americans who served in the Armed Forces. Locally, many veterans associations commemorate the holiday with programs and parades. West Fargo VFW Post #7564 holds a Veterans Day program that begins with a flag-raising ceremony and a fly-over by the Air National Guard at 11 a.m. Local bands often perform, and a keynote speaker provides a poignant message. Watch for more information about other local events at www.fargovfw762.com and www.dilworthvfw.org.
