a note from the

PRESIDENT

Behind the Scenes of Voices of Vision Easily one of my favorite events all year is Voices of Vision, and we’re gearing up to welcome Danica Patrick for our ninth annual (sold out!) event in less than a month. It’s our largest event of the year and draws about 1,000 people to hear from national names. The event was one of the first things I launched upon my arrival in Fargo nine years ago. It affords the opportunity for our members and community to get access to bigname speakers sharing their insights—something that many metros offer but wasn’t here. The other thing it does is give the speakers a chance to see and experience our great community. Hopefully they are so impressed that they tell their network how great a time they had in Fargo Moorhead West Fargo. In preparation for this year, I asked my staff to share with me some of their favorite moments from the years. Here are a few behind-the-scene stories. The night before his event, Rudy Giuliani was trying to watch the GOP debate at his hotel. Turns out they didn’t have the channel, so our VP arranged a TV and spot for him to watch it at the Fargo Country Club. Our events director said that watching Rudy watch the debate was like watching most men watch football. Terry Bradshaw mentioned being in Fargo on Fox NFL Sunday.

The year after that, we lost Rob O’Neill at one point! He was running behind, and when our staff went to check on him, they found him starting to change in the hallway outside his hotel room, which he had been locked out of. Last year, Shaq provided endless stories for our team. From his love affair with Dot’s Pretzels, to graciousness in signing any item brought to him, to his backstage McDonald’s order. What did he request? Oh, just 24 McNuggets, a double cheeseburger, a Big Mac, supersized fry and a Diet Coke. As we learned from his presentation, Shaquille O’Neal is a pretty easy-going, humble guy. He even made a point to introduce himself to, and personally thank, the servers and staff. This year, we’re thrilled to welcome our first female speaker, professional race car driver Danica Patrick. Tickets and tables have already sold out, and we’re so grateful for the growing interest in this series and speaker! Stay tuned to see who we bring next year for our tenth annual event! Feel free to reach out and suggest who you’d like to see next.

PUBLIC AFFAIRS

Insider White House stories shared at Eggs & Issues We had a special speaker come all the way from Washington, D.C. for October’s Eggs & Issues. A personal friend of Chamber president Craig Whitney, John McConnell shared many stories and insights with our audience.

#FMWFEggs

McConnell served as a speechwriter in the White House during the George W. Bush administration and regaled attendees with fun facts from the inside. He took us behind the scenes of the entire process of writing a speech, from assignment to final delivery, including the role of fact checkers, and how seriously presidents take their speeches. George W. always made time before an address to do a final read-through and underline points for emphasis. He always wanted logical speech, and knew the words must explain a situation; sometimes even unite a nation.

Meeting with the candidates

Agribusiness group talks tariffs and trade

Last month 37 candidates running for office locally—including ND’s two House of Representatives—attended our Cracker Barrel event to meet and talk to Chamber members about their priorities and the issues. Thank you to all that came and posed questions.

Tariffs and trade have been a source of great concern to the agricultural community this year. In October, the agribusiness committee welcomed in Dr. Frayne Olson, NDSU, to provide an overview of the changes in exports of the soybean crop out of North Dakota since tariffs where imposed by China in July. After extended discussion with the committee, the complexity of the issue was established. Dr. Olson also reviewed several options for the industry for the coming year.

The next week, we also hosted Moorhead’s three mayoral candidates for a forum. There, each took turns answering questions about their vision for the city. Don’t forget to vote November 6!

He then turned to offer an overview of the upcoming midterm elections, reviewing how many Senate and House seats are up, and how shifts in power can happen in just one day depending how the votes land. The closest races are in Trump country, he said, meaning many eyes will be on those states’ results—including North Dakota’s Senate race. A pattern of history shows that the president’s side often changes in the midterms. But of course, anything can happen, so it will be exciting to watch it unfold. “It’s hard to make predictions, especially about the future!” he laughed before closing the event with a Q&A with a very engaged and interested audience. Thanks to all that came and to the wonderful service at the Holiday Inn!

MEMBER PROFILE

Focused on

Business of the Year

innovation Last summer, Eide Bailly celebrated 100 years of serving clients through tax, audit and accounting services. But over the years, the firm has added a variety of specialty services and grown to be much more. Focused on innovation to evolve with industry trends and best serve their clients, they’ve become known as the trusted business advisors. And it’s what has driven their success. Leveraging technology in an automated world and focusing on their people seems to be the Eide Bailly secret sauce. The firm has taken on more work in the cybersecurity arena and is even looking into leveraging artificial intelligence in the audit process, where different algorithms can analyze data in new ways. A new service line—business outsourcing and strategy—helps organizations with dayto-day tasks such as payroll and CFO services. Idea Hub was launched to give employees a platform to voice ideas, and an Innovation Council allows the firm to see how to capitalize on ROI, look at different teams and projects, and help identify failures as a way to learn and move on. And in a brand-new role, the Chief Innovation Officer stays focused on innovative strategies to keep the firm competitive and forward-thinking.

What else could be next? Eide Bailly is continuing to implement diversified professional and advisory services to remain relevant and create value. They’ll also utilize more digital strategy, automation processes, artificial intelligence, machine learning and robotic processes in service areas to raise the productivity of their people and their client work. They’re ready to be disruptors and help their clients in their challenges as well.

Idea Hub: A new online community that allows Eide Bailly employees to share their ideas and vote with either a “thumbs up” or “thumbs down.” Ideas that net more than 15 “thumbs up” votes are guaranteed an official response and consideration by an innovation council.

So far Idea Hub has generated… •• •• •• •• •• ••

895 ideas 42 in consideration 26 in progress 186 completed 102 declined And many more to get to!

There needs to be a platform for idea creation and generation.”

First Focus, Eide Bailly’s women’s leadership initiative, has been one of the most successful initiatives the firm has undertaken. “This organization puts focus on the empowerment of women at all levels in the organization, and that helps us in an ever-changing and challenging industry. Many of us lead what we believe are ordinary lives. In the daily grind, we can lose sight of the extraordinary that surrounds us at home and the office. At this session, Michels will share her personal gratitude journey. She’ll help attendees identify where they are on their own journey and how they can move along. This will allow them to lead happier and ultimately more productive lives in both their work and home environments.

LEADERSHIP

LFMWF Learns Innovation & Entrepreneurship The Leadership Fargo Moorhead West Fargo participants spent our October session at Doosan Bobcat learning about agriculture, innovation and entrepreneurship. Then, Joel Honeyman, vice president of innovation at Doosan Bobcat, and a team from the Doosan Bobcat Acceleration Center, came in to conduct a lens-smashing activity, where participants were reminded that they can be innovative in any field.

The participants also heard the proposals for this year’s Community Change Initiatives. Thanks to all that joined us last month at VFW Post 7564 in West Fargo for our Off the Clock and New Member Social. We loved seeing the new space in West Fargo and had a great time! The next morning, we hosted our second Morning Buzz networking event at Beans downtown. We’re invigorated by all the new connections!

YEA!: YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS ACADEMY

Kicking off our fourth year of YEA!

#FMWFYEA

We are thrilled to announce the Young Entrepreneurs Academy Class of 2019! This year, we are working with a small class of students from Fargo, West Fargo, Dilworth and Richland. Most of our students are upperclassmen who are active in DECA, Future Business Leaders of America, Junior Achievement, student council, and Philanthropy and Youth. Their participation and success in these other extracurricular activities proves that they already have an interest in learning about business and are ready to take the next step toward creating their own. These students are on the path to becoming future business and community leaders, and we’re honored they chose to include YEA! in their journey. Last month, we brought the students together for the first time at orientation and started our weekly classes at Concordia College the following week. Orientation gave our students and their parents an idea of what the next several months would hold and our first few classes jumped right into generating ideas and team building. We have modified the YEA! curriculum for this year, and it will now expedite the process of developing a business even more. The students who were selected to be a part of the program this year are ready for the challenge, and already have fantastic, viable business ideas!

Balega

Cornell

Congratulations to our Member Relations Ambassador Paul Balega of NAI North Central and Public Relations Ambassador Brenda Cornell of Job Service of North Dakota for being named the 2017-18 Ambassadors of the Year. Paul received the award based on his committee involvement, contacts made to members throughout the year and demonstrating professionalism. Brenda was chosen by her fellow ambassadors to receive this award (named after long-time ambassador Wayne Saar) based on attendance points, professionalism and committee involvement. Thank you Paul and Brenda for your dedication and hard work!

Last month we hosted an all-ambassador reunion at the Old Broadway, where current Chamber ambassadors and ones from years past were invited to get together to celebrate their service. There were many hugs, smiles and stories that went around as they reminisced. Thank you to everyone that has volunteered throughout the years! And thanks to our own Darren Dunlop for organizing the event.
