Message About a month ago we hosted our Fifth Annual Meeting as the Fargo Moorhead West Fargo Chamber. It served as a time to reflect, celebrate and honor, and I think I speak for all of us at The Chamber when I say it was an amazing afternoon. Looking back at this past year, I am incredibly proud of the work we’ve done and the people that have helped. We continued collaborating on the issues important to the business community, took stances on various measures, lobbied when relevant and educated. We hosted another round of spectacular events and brought in top-notch speakers. We debuted three new programs in support of our public affairs and advocacy efforts, women in business, and young entrepreneurs. None of this work could have been done without a great network of people. At the meeting, we honored over 500 of our volunteers, from committee members to ambassadors to Board members and more. We also honored Morrie Lanning with the Legacy Leader Award, which is the biggest award The Chamber gives out, and

perhaps one of the biggest in the community. He is certainly a deserving individual due to his decades of service to the community and to the state of Minnesota. I thank each and every person and company that has attended one of our events, sponsored an event or program, spoke at an event, collaborated with us or just supported our efforts this past year. We have a stellar group of individuals in this region! I am invigorated to continue providing relevant and useful programming and events this next year, as well as working hard to advocate for the betterment of business in the Fargo Moorhead West Fargo region. I am confident we’re in for another great year, and we’re ready to get to work!

Annual Meeting

Recapping the Year & Honoring Morrie Lanning at Fifth Annual Meeting Spirits were high as we celebrated our fiscal yearʼs accomplishments

About a month ago at the Holiday Inn Fargo, we hosted our Fifth Annual Meeting. The event served as a reflection and celebration of our accomplishments over the past fiscal year, offered a look at priorities for the next year and honored volunteers. Outgoing Board Chair Doug Restemayer shared our achievements from the past year, including a record-breaking year in regard to membership and events. Of note was the launch of three brand-new events and programs that have all been incredibly successful: Eggs & Issues, Women Connect and the Young Entrepreneurs Academy. After recognizing the outgoing Board and committee chairs, volunteers and staff, the new Chair of the Board Jon Riewer from Eventide Senior Living Communities, shared priorities for the coming year. Another big part of this event is the 2015 Legacy Leader Award. With an introduction by former Concordia College President Paul Dovre, Morrie Lanning was honored with this prestigious award. As Lanning took the stage to accept the award, he was cheered on with a welldeserved standing ovation. Throughout the event, we also shared several fun videos and slide shows showcasing our people hard at work from the past year and a video tribute to Lanning. We want to thank every single person who has been involved in The Chamber in the past year, from our Board to our event sponsors, attendees, committee volunteers, YPN and Leadership members, and all supporters of the business community in this area. It’s been a great year and we can’t wait for another one to come!

Impact of Immigration and Refugees in the Region It is impossible to escape the global news surrounding immigration and the refugee crisis. The Fargo Moorhead area is no different. While our region has been welcoming new Americans since our city’s inception, the international focus has heightened awareness and the discussion about the impact refugees and immigrants

have on our area. Lutheran Social Services (LSS) is the local resettlement agency working in North Dakota to help settle refugees that have been approved to move to the United States by the U.S. government. This relationship between LSS and the federal agencies that coordinate refugee resettlement work in our country has been active for more than 70 years. LSS’ experience over the last several decades would suggest that no other organization understands better what it takes to welcome new Americans into our community. Jessica Thomasson, CEO of LSS, will share the process refugees undertake to make it to the Fargo Moorhead area, what happens when they arrive and how they ultimately make an impact on our area. Thomasson will also address whether immigrants have had a beneficial effect on our communities and why there has been such a backlash. LSS is leading the charge to raise awareness about, while lessening the fear toward, continuing to welcome people who are resettling into the area. This is a timely topic that is of interest to our region, our nation and the world. The presentation will allow for time to accept questions from the audience.

North Dakota̓ s Response to EPA̓ s Costly Clean Power Plan The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a Clean Power Plan in early August, and it sparked concern from the state of North Dakota and many in the industry since it looks so different than the early proposal. In 2014, the EPA told the state of North Dakota that they would require an 11% cut in carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 to meet new EPA-imposed national goals. They offered explanation on how they studied each state’s unique circumstances and resources. One year later, the EPA changed its tune and is now requiring North Dakota to implement a 45% reduction instead with little to no explanation behind the change in thought. This new rule does not bode well for North Dakota and many are scratching their heads trying to understand it. For most consumers of electricity, the price will rise significantly, potentially costing residents of the state $400 to $450 million annually to comply with the latest version of the Clean Power Plan. To dive into these rules and what they mean for our region, we’ll be joined by a panel of experts to break it all down. Join us with Commissioner Julie Fedorchak, chair of the North Dakota Public Service Commission, Dave Glatt, Environmental Health Section chief, North Dakota Department of Health, and Mac McLennon, MinnKota Power.

Higher Education Leaders Discuss Students & Future Employment

One in six people wake up for school every morning in the Fargo Moorhead West Fargo area, Tim Flakoll, provost of the Tri-College University, shared. That’s a lot of bodies in our education systems. And a lot of future potential workforce. This was the focus of October’s Eggs & Issues event at the Radisson. We rounded up five leaders of our area’s higher education institutions to get the low-down on their focus and initiatives, what they’re doing to prepare the students of today with the jobs of tomorrow and what businesses need to know to be ready for them as we address the workforce gap. Dr. Carrie Brimhall, vice president and chief academic officer of Minnesota State Community Technical College, talked about how people tend to look at higher education as not very fast-moving. “But right now, we are moving fast, and we are innovative, and we recognize that things have to be done differently,” she said. “We’re finding the balance between holding on to our rich roots and knowing we have to change to meet the needs of this region. I am more confident than ever that we can do that work together.” Dr. John Richman, president of North Dakota State College of Science, expressed his sincere thanks at the tech schools being accepted into the area’s tri-college consortium. He also shared that their biggest challenge is recruitment, as today’s culture is devaluing the associate’s degree and entry-level positions. “Use the university system to attract young people,” he said. “Use us to bring people to the state and then we can put them to work for you.” Richman then issued a challenge to policymakers and decisionmakers in the room: “If we are going to continue to advance North Dakota, legislators, you have created a tremendous business environment. Now we need workforce. Somebody in this state needs to work this thing out. Somebody needs to take the lead on that.” The themes of the event centered around the growth each college is focusing on in terms of programming, increased attention on staffing the new Sanford, student debt after college, technology, and the importance of partnerships between the colleges and within the community.

Save the Date Honor Veterans on November 11 November 11 marks an important date for those who have served our country. Almost 100 years ago, our nation chose the day to honor those who died in service to the U.S., but after World War II, the commemoration was changed to Veterans Day in honor of all Americans who served in the Armed Forces. Locally, many veterans associations commemorate the holiday with programs and parades. West Fargo VFW Post #7564 holds a Veterans Day program with several fun and meaningful activities. For more area events this year, watch for information from our area VFWs.

Business Training Rock Your Routine

Taking Control of the Daily Grind Don’t let your calendar dictate your day! Do you ever look around and wonder where all of your time went? We’ve all been there. At the end of the quarter, or the end of the year, we have that nagging feeling that we didn’t make the most of the opportunity we had to build our knowledge, our numbers and our network. At the start of 2014, Steve Hallstrom, president and managing partner at Flag Family Media, decided to change course and try a new strategy of taking small daily steps to commit to each day. This approach led to his best year ever in sales, management and industry credibility. Having seen this plan work for himself, Hallstrom will bring his expertise to our Business Training series. He guarantees that anyone who uses it faithfully will see results, no matter their age, industry or experience level. It’s customizable to your specific product or market, and can be done in a matter of minutes. Attendees will learn small steps they can take every day to reach their goals by the end of the year, including how to create a simple, daily action plan that is customized to your position and how to build productive and meaningful relationships that will lead to success.

Business Training

Business Training Tackles Workplace Violence

October’s Business Training tackled a topic that is quite important and timely as headlines both across the nation and in our own community report on acts of crime, some often in public settings or in the workplace. Fargo Police Department Lt. Joel Vettel spoke to session attendees on workplace violence – how it escalates, what the warning signs are, how to handle aggressive behavior and how to prevent tragedy in the first place. Vettel shared interesting information, such as that in over 80% of violent assaults, alcohol was a factor. Of all the facilities where police get calls regarding violence, hospitals top the list because emotions and stress are heightened in those places. While that doesn’t mean everyone drinking or everyone in a hospital will become violent, it’s simply a warning sign to factor in. That being said, anyone is capable of violence given the right triggers, so it’s best to be aware in all situations. More than anything else, Vettel wanted attendees to walk away knowing the verbal warning signs of aggression.

These Signs Include: §§ §§ §§ §§ §§ §§ §§

Using angry or threatening tone of voice Making verbal threats Making unreasonable demands Talking irrationally or not making sense Cursing, shouting or screaming Defiantly challenging rules or authority Making lewd, sexual or degrading comments

There are often multiple warning signs to violence before it occurs, but it often goes either unnoticed or ignored. It’s so important to be aware of them, speak up if you see something suspicious and address a potential problem before it happens. In a conflict situation, one of the best things you can do is to find common ground with the aggressor, followed by remaining calm but in control, professional and polite, while giving them choices (such as “If you don’t calm down, I’ll need to call the police,” or “I can’t help you if you don’t calm down.”) Vettel reminded to never be afraid to call the police, even before something happens. If you intend on firing someone and think the individual might not take it well, ask for some police to be in the area at the time of the firing just in case. It’s always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to the safety of yourself and your employees. If you want to review your own company’s safety procedures, the police can do on-site assessments or group trainings—all you have to do is ask.

29% of the 56 that

responded had felt unsafe in their workplace in the last six months.

70% of the 56 that

responded had felt threatened verbally or physically at work sometime during their career.

52% of the 66 that

responded knows their company has procedures and what they are.

49% of the 65 that

responded have never had self defense training.

Attendees participated in live polling at Octoberʼs training. Above are the answers that reflect the highest percentages. fmwfchamber.com | 11

Leadership FMWF

Leadership Class Focuses on Education The Leadership Fargo Moorhead West Fargo class took a deep dive into our area’s educational ecosystem during our October session. We began our day teaching Junior Achievement curriculum to students at Robert Asp Elementary in Moorhead and Madison Elementary in Fargo. The hands-on, experiential lessons teach students important concepts such as work readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy. To make the day even more entertaining, students at Madison Elementary took part in their annual career day where they get to dress up as what they want to be when they grow up! This year, we saw doctors, FBI agents, soldiers, actors and more. The impact was not only seen with the elementary students, but with the LFMWF class as well. Participants gained an appreciation for our educators and were pleasantly surprised with the creativity, intelligence and excitement the students possessed. We then headed to the Hjemkomst Center to hear from local educators and non-profit representatives on Education that Works, a community taskforce that focuses on supporting education in the Fargo Moorhead West Fargo metro. While not all of our participants have school-aged children or children at all, that doesn’t mean education in our community doesn’t affect them. The students of today are hopefully the workforce of tomorrow, so this is a topic that has direct implications for our business community. Making up our panel was Dr. Jeffrey Schatz, Fargo Public School District, JoDell Tieken, Fargo Public School District, Molly Bestge, West Fargo Public Schools, Tifanie Gelinske, Greater Fargo Moorhead Economic Development Corporation, Missy Eideness, Moorhead Area Public Schools and Thomas Hill, United Way of Cass-Clay. To add a little variety to the class, the LFMWF planning committee has developed a new way for our participants to get hands-on leadership experience while giving back to our communities. The Community Change Initiatives (CCIs) places the project development back onto the participants by allowing them to choose community issues and needs that are important to them. This year, seven of the proposed initiatives were selected to move forward and be completed. Melissa Cameron, Discovery Benefits, Chad Lystad, Rasmussen College, Ashley Petersen, Ronald McDonald House Charities, Tahralee Sauvageau, Union State Bank, Ann Schoenberg, Cornerstone Bank, Jodie Schrier, Gate City Bank and Leslie Wood, Heritage Homes, LLC/Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Premier Properties, pitched their ideas for the Community Change Initiative to the class who then selected which they would like to be partnered with. While the groups have only just begun, we are certain they will leave a lasting impact.

Women Connect True Leaders Don̓ t Create Followers; They Mentor and Create More Leaders

You-Turn: Get on the Road to Self-Empowerment

Few things can benefit a business more than building strong leaders. Vogel Law Firm is a prime example of this, as they have an unprecedented number of women partners compared to other law firms in the state. One key reason for that is a strong mentoring program. Tami Norgard, a managing partner, mentored Jade Rosenfeldt, a partner at the firm. Now, they can speak first-hand about the key attributes of a successful mentor/ mentee relationship. Rosenfeldt knows how much can be gained early in a career by having someone assist in building the “myth of competence,” and Norgard can illustrate how her mentorship fostered improved policies and opportunities at their firm. Norgard and Rosenfeldt will be discussing with the Women Connect audience the different types of mentors every new hire should have, from a first-year-of-employment mentor, to a transitional mentor to help climb the ladder or a more permanent long-term mentor. They’ll also share how navigating the ladder to success in business can be made easier by intentionally fostering the right mentoring relationship(s), as well as the benefits gained by managers while prompting mentees to reach that next rung. Learn how to empower new hires to seek out different types of mentoring relationships. You’ll find out the advantages that business owners and managers can gain from fostering great mentoring programs that will help grow the business and the future business leaders!

There is a critic living within each of us; a voice waiting to take a bite out of our happiness and self-esteem in hopes that doing so will make it stronger. Unfortunately, it often does. Most of us unconsciously allow this critical voice its destructive rants. We’ve become accustomed to the things it says, and whether we like it or not, we assume it is speaking the truth. It isn’t. Darcy Simonson, of Insights with Darcy, wants to help you take your power and joy back from the critic. In this interactive talk, Simonson will help you become conscious of your critical voice, identify its source, and compassionately reframe it in a way that empowers you and sets you free of your own internal critic. Simonson is a graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead and describes herself as the “master of the jack-of-all-trades” with a wonderfully varied career path. She is the author of “To Love Your Life; Release What Was, Embrace What Is and Become Wildly Wonderful You” and the companion “Life-Workbook & Journal.” Through self-examination, intuition, and training in hypnotherapy, meditation, stress management and energy healing, she’s guided thousands of people to explore their own mind, body and spiritual make-up. Simonson conducts Life-Lover Mastermind groups based on her book, and is in the process of creating meditation workshops for parents, teachers and children. She has 25 hypnosis and meditation mp3s and apps that empower adults and children to live consciously.

Women Connect Coffee Connect Challenge A special thank you to Luna Coffee & Tea Co. for providing gift cards at the September Women Connect session. One lucky winner at each table was given a gift card and encouraged to continue the coffee challenge of meeting and connecting with someone new. Thank you so much Nikki Berglund and staff, we appreciate your efforts in helping women continue to make valuable connections.

Anne Fans Abundant at September Women Connect On September 22, Women Connect attendees heard wise words from Minnesota State University Moorhead President Anne Blackhurst, who spoke on “Leading for the Long Run.” Speaking from the heart, she was relatable and eloquent but went deep, sharing her own past regrets. She advised to live life like a marathon rather than a sprint with 10 key takeaways for attendees to implement that philosophy into their own lives. Some of those included to develop grit; stay in the mile you’re running, as opposed to worrying about what’s ahead of you; mastering self-talk and the importance of a positive attitude; and finally, If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together. Blackhurst directed an activity for each attendee where we wrote on 10 small slips of paper 10 qualities about life, such as financial security, close friends, career success and physical fitness. We then arranged, slip by slip, the order that each was important to us. The activity provided a great way for attendees to evaluate each of their priorities in order of importance to them.

Bobbleheads were given to the first 100 attendees, and throughout the event it was clear we had many Anne fans in the house!

Hospice Care: Allowing Patients to Live at End of Life Voted Not-for-Profit of the Year

When you think of Hospice, you probably think of a group of people who care for individuals with terminal illnesses. You may also think of a volunteer holding someone’s hand as they lay in bed. Bonnie Oelschlager, marketing & communications manager at Hospice of the Red River Valley, contends it’s much more than that. Hospice is really about living. Take a patient named Dennis, for instance, who really wanted to see a Bison football game and visit an old Army buddy in his final months. The Hospice social worker arranged for Dennis to fulfill these end-of-life wishes; Dennis attended a Bison football home game with his nephew and one week later, he traveled to South Dakota to reunite with his Army friend after 50 years. “I think the main stigma people have about hospice is that you don’t get on it until the last days,” shared Cindy, Dennis’ partner, on the Hospice blog. “You can get on hospice and have some valid times and be active. Hospice doesn’t just mean you’re in a bed.” “Hospice allows you to live,” Oelschlager elaborated. “We help make the time they have left worth living.” A highly trained team of professionals, including a physician, nurse practitioner, registered nurse, social worker, chaplain, certified nursing assistant and bereavement specialist, deliver intensive comfort care. Hospice also has many volunteers who offer companionship to patients and help in the office. Collectively, this team provides comfort and eases symptoms and pain for their patients and their families. But Hospice goes beyond patient care. Hospice of the Red River Valley also provides grief resources and support groups and classes to anyone in the community struggling with the grief that accompanies a death. Each Hospice of the Red River Valley office houses a resource library that offers materials about many types of loss and terminal illness. Hospice of the Red River Valley has grown significantly since it started in 1981. Today, they have a large service area, with presence

24 | November 2015

and patients in 29 counties in North Dakota and Minnesota, and a staff of 200, plus more than 400 volunteers. Oelschlager says their growth has been organic—they simply go where they’re needed. As a not-for-profit organization, Hospice of the Red River Valley provides services to anyone who qualifies for hospice care, regardless of insurance coverage or ability to pay. They receive reimbursement from Medicare, Medicaid and many private insurances, as well as many fundraisers throughout the year, and through the funds generated from its resale store, Heirlooms Thrift & Gift. Looking ahead, Oelschlager said they will continue to provide access to hospice care to our communities. She stressed the importance of completing an advance directive and encourages people to have tough conversations with their doctors and loved ones about their priorities and values at the end of life. Hospice of the Red River Valley received the Not-for-Profit of the Year award at this year’s ChamberChoice. It’s apparent that this organization truly cares deeply about their patients, partnerships, the community and the service they provide. Because of their work, Hospice volunteers and staff have really amazing stories. Many of them are shared on their AreaVoices blog and on their social media channels, and Oelschlager encourages you to visit these sites and educate yourself on what Hospice does in the community. She also emphasizes the importance of knowing all your options of care early on in a diagnosis. “Every one of us will need to know about hospice care at some point. Know early, know what your options are and don’t wait for a medical crisis,” she says.
