Fourth Annual Meeting
Highlights past year, recognizes volunteers and leaders
Message to Members
Astounding. Extraordinary. Staggering. No matter what word you use to describe what it was like for Fargo to host ESPN College GameDay for the second year in a row, it will no doubt accurately describe the experience. This distinct honor is one we should all be proud of because the show afforded our community a national spotlight yet again.
For the second year in a row, the nation saw what makes this community a great place to live, work, play and do business. For the second year in a row, sports fans across the country glimpsed the intense level of pride this community has in its college athletic programs. For the second year in a row, many downtown businesses experienced a financial windfall unlike any other that began Wednesday night when the crew arrived and lasted through the day on Saturday as the last revelers enjoyed the limelight afforded by a national television show being broadcast in front of a local trademark. While GameDay in Fargo is certainly something to be proud of, we shouldn’t forget about all the other reasons we can be proud of this community that we are fortunate to call home. For example, Forbes magazine recently announced that Fargo topped its list of best small places for business and careers. The Lumina Foundation listed Minnesota in second place and North Dakota in fourth place when it comes to the best-educated states. Don’t forget that North Dakota is the best state for women entrepreneurs, according to the annual OPEN State of Women-Owned Business report. It’s an exciting time to be in this community, and we at The Chamber are proud to represent so many incredible businesses and employees who are working together to improve our metro. We think you are all pretty extraordinary yourselves.

Terry Bradshaw Mixes Humor, Common Sense and Personal Successes in Business Message Thursday, November 13 | Noon to 1:30 p.m. Ramada Plaza & Suites and Conference Center, 1635 42nd Street South, Fargo
In November, Terry Bradshaw will bring his larger-than-life personality to the metro when he headlines The Chamber’s fifth annual Voices of Vision. His presentation, titled “Why Not Your Best?” will focus on what makes organizations successful despite constant change and competition. He will challenge you to rethink sacrifice as you contemplate the power of positivity in achieving success. Bradshaw is most known for his football fame, and after retiring from football in 1984, he moved into broadcast. He quickly became one of the NFL’s most colorful commentators, and he currently serves as co-host and analyst on Fox NFL Sunday, a four-time Emmy Award winning program. Television isn’t his only arena. Bradshaw starred in the feature film “Failure to Launch” and voiced a character in the animated film “Robots.” He’s also been a guest star on several television series and hosted his own talk show, “The Home Team with Terry Bradshaw.” Bradshaw has also released four albums, two of which were top-selling gospel records, and his cover of Hank Williams’ “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry” became a Top 10 country hit. He currently tours the nation with his stage production “Terry Bradshaw: America’s Favorite Dumb Blonde…A Life in Four Quarters” that features stories, jokes and singing. In addition to his football prowess, Bradshaw has an uncanny ability to tailor his message to whatever audience he is speaking to. ESPN College GameDay Energizes Community For the second year in a row, the ESPN College GameDay bus and its enormous production crew transformed Broadway in downtown Fargo into an outdoor television set, complete with four celebrated announcers, thousands of screaming fans and NDSU’s live Bison mascot, Corso. The week between the announcement that ESPN would descend on the Red River Valley and the actual broadcast was a flurry of fandom and an outpouring of pride for a local university athletic team. Downtown businesses immediately offered special packages as many festooned their buildings — inside and out — with green and gold. “ESPN choosing NDSU for a GameDay broadcast again this year reflects well not only on the university and its players, but also on Fargo and North Dakota,” Sen. John Hoeven said in a press release. At The Chamber’s Annual Meeting two days before the broadcast, President and CEO Craig Whitney presented an ESPN producer with a special gift made by Hebron Brick commemorating the network’s time in Fargo. Excited spectators began lining the streets in the pre-dawn hours, and police estimated that about 9,000 fans filled downtown Fargo, a figure twice the estimate of the 2013 event. For two hours, a plane flew over the crowd with a banner emblazoned with “The Chamber welcomes GameDay to Fargo,” and the crowd erupted in cheers when the championship banner was unfurled from the rooftop of a downtown building near the set. The turnout did not disappoint ESPN. According to a Forum news article, producer Lee Fitting said Saturday’s crowd exceeded his expectations, and he looks forward to returning to Fargo as often as possible. “There was not a better scene, I don’t think, in the history of ‘College GameDay' than what we had today,” Fitting said in the article.

On August 29, the US Navy officially accepted delivery of the USS North Dakota. “North Dakota and her crew delivered an outstanding performance,” Program Executive Officer for Submarines Rear Adm. David C. Johnson said in a written statement. “North Dakota set a new benchmark for excellence in what is arguably the best performing program in defense acquisition.”

Navy officials said the North Dakota successfully completed Alpha, Bravo and Board of Inspection and Survey trials, assessments which evaluate the submarine’s seaworthiness and operational capabilities. Military Affairs Committee Members Honored Last month during The Chamber’s Annual Meeting, two Military Affairs committee members were named The Chamber’s 2014 Legacy Leaders. Friends for more than 70 years, Major General Alexander Macdonald and Major General Darrol Schroeder both played pivotal roles throughout their careers in the military, paving the way for the continued success of North Dakota’s Air National Guard (NDANG). Macdonald was North Dakota’s Adjutant General on September 11, 2001, a day when the NDANG was called to play a center role in the response to the terrorist attacks. Magnetic Companies — Inspire, Clarify and Simplify From presenter Pam McGee, Minnesota State University Moorhead
Recent Gallop Poll results indicate that an estimated 70 percent or more of the professional workforce is unengaged or actively disengaged (meaning they would take another job as soon as they could). Global research by Towers Watson from 2013 found that the single highest drive of employee engagement is whether the manager is genuinely interested in their employee’s well-being. They also found that less than 40 percent of employees felt that support. The Magnetic Company Way (MCW) is a philosophy and a methodology on how to engage your employees where they feel inspired, have clarity and simplification of work. It is the result of research by Robertson and Company of more than 100 companies in 10 different countries that found engaged employees wanted four things: 1. Purposeful work. 2. Efficient processes. 3. People who cared about the customer. 4. Profitability. Attend this session to learn the fundamentals of creating an engaged workforce, whether you are a team leader, individual contributor or CEO. The process is the same! Imagine your workforce having a competitive edge because your employees were all “in it to win it” because they felt vital to the business, cared for by their managers and closely connected to their customers. Novel — maybe or maybe not. Competitive definitely!

When you consider customer service in your organization, here are four aspects to consider: 1. Friendliness. The concept is simple, but it’s no secret that happy, friendly professionals create better and more lasting relationships with your customers. Make sure you have the best people in the positions that interact with customers on every level. 2. Timeliness. Give your customers realistic timeframes for the product or service delivery, and if a delay occurs, communicate with them clearly and honestly to reset expectations. 3. Be memorable. It’s not enough anymore to simply offer good service; businesses need to give customers an experience that leaves a lasting—and positive—impression. 4. Be prepared. Something will go wrong, inevitably. If your organization is prepared with a process for responding when that happens, you can recover nimbly with little to no damage to your customer base.

Young Professionals Network Debuts New Logo, Rebranded Networking Event
For 10 years, the Young Professionals Network has been an unwavering pillar in the structure of The Chamber. From its founding with just six members to today, the program has grown to nearly 500 members and holds multiple monthly professional development and social engagement events. A growing presence warranted the creation of an identifying brand that is distinct to the program yet inclusive of its integral connection to The Chamber. We are proud to debut this new program logo for YPN and hope that it will soon be commonly recognizable when looking at all of the great things our YPN members are doing for The Chamber and the entire community.
Socializing within YPN is more than just meeting people; it’s about connecting with like-minded individuals and creating relationships that will transcend the typical bar scene. That’s why we rebranded Happy Hour to Off the Clock; we wanted the name to imply more than just sharing a drink with someone; the name implies a more strategic desire to invest in time after work to create lasting relationships that strengthen an individual’s personal and professional network.
Join us at Off the Clock to network and mingle with friends, new and old. As usual, appetizers will be provided and drinks are on your own.

Awkward, But Important in Business: Understanding a Foreign Accent
Talking on the phone with someone whose accent is difficult for you to understand creates potential for misunderstanding and miscommunication, not to mention frustration. It’s very common to talk with someone whose native language is different than your own, but as business goes global, it is necessary to be able to navigate phone conversations with anyone who calls. Everyone’s accent is foreign in some part of the world, so even though it may feel offensive to admit that you can’t understand someone, it can actually be a very unifying experience. When we can see the person with whom we are talking, we can use visual cues to understand better what he or she is saying. Phone conversations provide no such opportunity, and can be very frustrating. We may find ourselves stuck asking someone to repeat long stories over and over.
2. Ask yes or no questions based on those key words. Direct the conversation by asking closed-ended questions based on the key words or phrases you picked out. This step allows you to take the conversation into your own hands, instead of asking them to repeat everything they said over again (or maybe several times). 3. Continue to ask close-ended questions throughout the conversation. Once you know the caller’s intention, continue to ask them questions throughout the conversation. Paraphrase and ask them to repeat themselves if necessary. For example, “Which job did you apply for?” or “Are you calling about an existing appointment?” Here are a few more tips to ease the process: §§ Speaking louder will not help, but speaking more slowly will. §§ Don’t pretend to understand; it’s okay to say you are having a hard time understanding. §§ Callers can hear a smile in your voice.
The following steps can help you succeed in communicating with people who have accents that are unfamiliar to you: This article was written by Jeanne Hettich for The Village Business Institute’s “Good People, Good Business” blog. 1. Listen for key words. Many times someone is calling with an issue or a question, and they want to get it all out right away. Once you realize you can’t understand them, don’t panic! Listen for a key word or phrase. For example, if you hear the phrase “job application” or “appointment,” start there.

National Agricultural Genotyping Center Coming to North Dakota The National Corn Growers Association has selected Fargo, North Dakota, as the future site of the new National Agricultural Genotyping Center. The center will be located at the USDA-ARS Biosciences Research Laboratory at North Dakota State University. “The Genotyping Center will be a tremendous asset to growers and the agricultural community as well as our state and local communities,” said Paul Belzer, chairman, North Dakota Corn Council. Operations of the National Agricultural Genotyping Center will commence October 2014. The benefits to production agriculture and food safety are profound. Strengths in the North Dakota application are crop diversity, collaboration with proven agricultural research and political support. NDSU, North Dakota Corn Growers, Gov. Jack Dalrymple, the state’s congressional delegation and many others worked with the national organization to explain the benefits of having the center located in North Dakota. Heritage Homes Positively Influences Lives Through Enjoyable Homebuilding Journey and Focus on Livability Many homebuilders may think about the business only in terms of creating a lovely space that will wow guests and impress the industry. Heritage Homes, LLC, also focuses on creating a livable space unique to each family in a seamless process that positively influences the lives of everyone involved — especially the home-owners.
“The two major complaints people have about the process of building a home is that it is so stressful they would never do it again and that they were so surprised by the costs,” said President Tyrone Leslie. Knowing that, Heritage Homes has implemented systems that allow their people to communicate regularly and honestly with home-owners to eliminate those concerns. “At Heritage Homes, we are passionate about fulfilling the promise we make to every home-owners about creating a journey for them that will be enjoyable every step along the way,” Leslie said. “In order to create a livable home for the family, our people need to have the ability to ask the right questions and do a great job of listening to the response.”
Heritage Homes was founded in 1995 and has built more than 750 homes. Each year, nearly 30 employees and a variety of trade partners participate in the journey to build more than 70 homes in the area.
Livability is essential to the success of building a Heritage home. The company is the area’s only licensed Woman-Centric homebuilder, an essential distinction given that 90 percent of home-buying decisions are made by women, Leslie said. He explained that a woman-centric design focuses on understanding specific needs and creating a space that will perform for the woman and her family. Key to that understanding are four different lenses through which home owners utilize space, including: §§ Flexibility – lots of flexible spaces to use in a variety of ways. §§ Storage – an emphasis on utilizing pantries, rear foyer entrances and storage spaces throughout the home not usually seen. §§ Entertainment – open spaces that let a family entertain in many ways from large family Thanksgiving gatherings to an intimate gathering of girlfriends. §§ De-stressing – an accent on having places in the home to unwind and relax like a window nook seating arrangement, spa-like master bath or a unique indoor/outdoor space for quiet time. “What you’ll find is that there is more you in your home,” said Sales Manager Steve Larson. “It starts with how we communicate with you when you first walk in the door. We ask that you take a Design For My Style new home quiz, so we can learn how you like to be communicated to, how you like to be shown things, how you like to proceed so that we can tailor your homebuilding journey exactly to your personality.” Every client is surveyed about the homebuilding process. Leslie said 98.3 percent of clients would recommend Heritage Homes to their family and friends. That’s a proven track record clients can count on. And 100 percent of homeowners reported no economic surprises during their homebuilding journey; that’s due to the great communication that occurs between homeowners and the professionals. Everyone at Heritage Homes has a passion for building beautiful, livable homes. They know they are positively influencing the lives of the home owners they work with, and they don’t take that privilege lightly. “We mean it, and we love it,” Leslie said. The United Way: Creating a Vibrant Community The United Way of Cass-Clay is focused on slowing the cycle of poverty. In 2011, the board of trustees decided to refocuse the organization’s investment strategies to better serve this goal. The focus shifted from basic needs like food and shelter to providing funding and support for programming focused on: §§ Education - preparing children and youth for success in school and life. §§ Income - promoting financial stability and independence. §§ Health - empowering people to lead health lives.
United Way has been focusing specifically on early childhood education in recent years. They currently invest in five early childhood education programs that serve more than 4,000 children locally. A few highlights of these programs include: §§ Imagination Library, which has been sending children books in the mail for 10 years. The goal is to get children ages 0 to 5 interested in reading. In 2013, the United Way sent more than 106,000 books to 9,000 children. §§ North Dakota Reading Corps works with children from pre-kindergarten to third grade to improve reading skills. The program works through tutors to ensure children entering third grade are at a normal reading level. This is critical as it marks the point where children stop learning to read and start reading to learn. The investment of $266,200 in early childhood development by the United Way leverages more than $200 million in reduced dependence on public assistance, increased school readiness, higher lifetime earnings and In 2013, the United Way exceeded their $5.2 million reduced crime costs. The organization sees this type of investment as a great campaign goal by more than $100,000. This year’s preventative measure, helping to slow the cycle of poverty. campaign, which is led by campaign chair and Cass County Sheriff Paul Laney, aims to raise $5.5 million All these strategic investments are just that — strategic. United Way makes for the community. investment decisions based off world class research, one of the many advantages of being a member of a global organization. The research looks at not only immediate impacts of programs but long-term sustainable results that make a difference. United Way sees the money raised not as charity but as an investment in economic development and the well-being of our entire region. “Lessening the demand for basic needs will help create a vibrant community for everyone,” said President Sherri Thomsen. Thomsen also explained how the organization looks at the community as whole to make decisions on where to invest. Recently, our community has heard a lot about workforce development and the need for skilled works. United Way is working with community partners to help resolve the issue by “changing the way we teach and not pushing everyone to a four-year degree without looking at their skills and interests,” Thomsen said.
Research tells us breaking the cycle of poverty is possible... if we focus on the issue of education.
