a note from the

PRESIDENT

Reflecting on The Chamber’s Past (Fiscal) Year Just like that, another outstanding year at The Chamber has come to a close. Looking back at our just-finished fiscal year, we have had many successes, from advocacy efforts, focused education and growing programs. We continue to have a strong and growing Public Policy committee that has been active in taking positions on vital issues in our region and state. We brought in all three members of the North Dakota Congressional delegation, as well as various Minnesota and North Dakota state legislators and other statewide and local officials from both sides of the river to address important topics at Eggs & Issues events. This series continues to be wellattended and a place where experts can share important and timely issues with our members and the community. We covered topics including the FM Diversion, tax reform, public education, economic growth, downtown developments and safety. With a year of contested local elections, we also worked to educate the public on the candidates’ stances through debates and social media. We’ve got more coming too, from planning a Cracker Barrel forum to get to know more candidates in all three major cities, drafting our policy agenda, and planning Chamber Day at the Capitol.

We have had an outstanding year for many of our programs. This year’s Leadership Fargo Moorhead West Fargo program’s Community Change Initiative groups had seven awesome projects that changed the community in a positive way. And this year’s YEA! students developed some amazing business plans and even gained extra exposure for their businesses at local events like 1 Million Cups. Our Women Connect, Military Affairs, Business Training, Agribusiness, YPN and Ambassadors groups all had numerous successes as well. Thank you to all who have become engaged in these committees and programs, because your participation produces success. In keeping with the theme of exposure and growth, our Voices of Vision was nothing less than a huge success. Last fall, we welcomed basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal, and it turned out to be the biggest Chamber event to date! Don’t miss this year’s event with race car driver and entrepreneur Danica Patrick! We were also surprised and honored to win the Mid-America Chamber Executives (MACE) Award for Digital Campaign of the Year for Shaq’s event. I extend a “Shaq-sized” thank you to all staff and volunteers who helped make the event

possible, as well as all sponsors and attendees for your continued interest in Chamber events like these. It seems fitting to end my remarks thanking all of the staff and volunteers for their tremendous work, as their efforts paid off in an outstanding Chamber year. I look forward to the continued success of our programs and events, as well as education and advocacy efforts in another all-around great year ahead!

Craig Whitney

President / CEO The Chamber

I’d also like to wish a warm welcome to the new Greater Fargo Moorhead Economic Development Corporation President and CEO, Joseph Raso. Our chamber looks forward to collaborating on challenges and opportunities for our region.

MEMBER PROFILE

Not-for-Profit of the Year:

Great Plains Food Bank Serving as the region’s only food bank, the Great Plains Food Bank plays a unique role in hunger relief in our community. By rescuing surplus food from the food industry, they ensure it safely gets into the hands of our hungry neighbors in need. The bank provides food assistance to more than 97,000 hungry individuals each year, which equates to one in nine individuals in our community and state, Great Plains Food Bank CEO Steve Sellent told us. “Sadly, of those, 36% are children and another 12% are seniors.”

6 THE BRIDGE • SEPTEMBER 2018

Through its network, they supply over 11 million meals annually to our neighbors struggling with hunger. “Our staff and board of directors are driven each day by our values of passion, service and innovation to advance our vision of ending hunger throughout North Dakota and western Minnesota,” Sellent said. Five innovative programs are designed to fill the hunger gap for children, seniors and individuals living in rural communities:

1

Backpack program: A single backpack is filled with milk, juice, snacks and food for three meals to assist hungry children over the weekend.

2

School pantry program: To help solve child hunger by providing nutritious food to children and their families in convenient, familiar and safe locations.

3

Youth summer meals program: To help those relying on free and reduced cost school lunches to get healthy food during the summer months.

4

Senior food pack program: A commodity-based program providing nutritionally balanced, shelf-stable monthly food assistance specially targeted at low-income seniors.

5

SNAP Outreach: Formerly known as the food stamp program and the nation’s largest federal nutritional assistance program, assists with the program application and with identifying single people and families that qualify. Beyond these programs, the Great Plains Food Bank offers a Pop-Up Perishable Food Program and Mobile Food Pantry that bring both fresh and shelf-stable food directly to rural communities. Food industry partners also allow the Great Plains Food Bank to offer a business solution for waste management costs, and an opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to social responsibility.

Then, they store and prepare the product for distribution with a volunteer force of 5,500. A total of 213 food pantries, shelters and soup kitchens rely on the Great Plains Food Bank. By 2007, a record 5 million pounds was distributed to 200 partner agencies statewide. On average, the bank supplies 83% of all food in food baskets, while saving other local non-profits that serve hot meals $1.8 million annually. In their 35-year history, they’ve seen immense growth. Last year, they distributed almost 6 million pounds of food to people in Cass and Clay counties who sought emergency food assistance through their programs and services, or their partner network of pantries, shelters and kitchens. This is an increase of over 11% in just three years.

Ending Hunger 2.0

Hunger is a complex issue that doesn’t exist in a vacuum. If food alone was the answer to ending hunger, we would have done it by now. But we haven’t. That’s why Great Plains Food Bank launched Ending Hunger 2.0—a new approach to ending hunger that works to bring sustainable, long-term solutions to hunger through Advocacy, Research and Community Based Solutions.

In the next five years, their plan is to reduce the missing meal gap by 50%. This gets them closer to their transformational goal of creating a hunger-free community by 2037. At the core of everything the Great Plains Food Bank does is a commitment to end hunger. They believe that when you feed a child, you feed our future. And their guiding philosophy is what’s in the best interest of our hungry neighbors. To learn more, donate or volunteer, visit greatplainsfoodbank.org.

EGGS & ISSUES

Talking downtowns: Eggs & Issues recap At our August Eggs & Issues, we welcomed three community leaders to share about our downtown communities. We were joined by Fargo Downtown Community Partnership President & CEO, Melissa Rademacher, West Fargo Economic Development & Community Service Director, Matthew Marshall, and Downtown Moorhead Inc. President & CEO, Derrick LaPoint. Rademacher gave kudos to the Business Improvement District, talked about the importance of Renaissance zones, and overviewed new downtown happenings— including three new ice cream shops— contributing to a dynamic and cultured downtown Fargo. LaPoint mentioned many new and exciting projects underway in Moorhead to enhance underutilized properties and boost commercial and retail properties. One interesting project is repainting the corridor on the bridge from Northern Pacific Ave in Fargo to Center Ave in Moorhead to create one lane each way and add a center turn lane. Marshall urged those who haven’t been down Sheyenne Street recently to check it out as they will notice it is dramatically different with a “completely different feel than it was even a year ago.” Excited for what the future brings, he spoke of a grant they just received from the state 8 THE BRIDGE • SEPTEMBER 2018

of North Dakota through the Governor’s Main Street initiative that will help add parking and walkability downtown. When discussing challenges these downtowns face, all three leaders spoke optimistically about finding solutions to create success despite some unfavorable variables. Topics included liquor licenses and food trucks, affordable office space, housing and lack of green space in Fargo. But, more art is coming, as well as a strong digital marketing plan part of the Downtown in Focus plan. In Moorhead, the largest challenge was the railroad tracks. LaPoint is determined to work around that though and ensure a strong downtown Moorhead. Keeping with a positive theme, however, he echoed Melissa’s comments about the river, claiming we need to “view the river as a seam and not a boundary or barrier.” For West Fargo, they face a lack of on-street parking. The recurring theme was an optimistic vision for vibrant successful downtown communities. Looking at the recent improvements, projects underway and future plans, one can only agree these leaders are certainly going down the right avenue to create such downtown environments. Execution: Transform Your Organization into a GoalSmashing Machine Mike Meagher President Sagency  sageadvisor

Wednesday, October 10

Stress Management: Sleep, Eat, Move, Repeat Christopher Dockter Doctor of Chiropractic/Owner Venture Chiropratic

The people on your team aren’t lazy or incompetent: they’re busy. In fact, they are so busy with the urgency of the day-to-day, that they struggle to find the time to execute on your organization’s most important goals. In this session, we will discuss proven execution principles that will help you transform your organization into a goal-crushing machine.

We all have stress from many sources. The physical stress of work or exercise. The emotional stress of an ever-growing demand on your time. The chemical stress on your body from an environment that is becoming more polluted and poor eating habits. There seem to be thousands of fix-alls and snake oils being sold to make our lives better, but what if we already had access to what we need to increase our body’s ability to handle stress when needed and decrease the harmful side effects stress puts on us? We do. At this session, you’ll learn a step-by-step approach to managing life’s biggest stressors and take back control of your well-being.

11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. DoubleTree by Hilton & West Fargo Conference Center

11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Courtyard by Marriott, Moorhead

Is your organization achieving its most important goals? Nearly four out of five strategic implementations fail. It’s not the fault of the strategies themselves. It is that they do not get executed by the people within the organization.

Why Checking the Box is Not Moving the Needle

Tuesday, October 23

Navigating the Leadership Journey Susan Jarvis Vice President Sanford Health  susanjarvis70

Carrie Brimhall President Minnesota State Community and Technical College  PrezBrimhall Leadership occurs at all levels of an organization. This session will describe strategies used by high-performing leaders, illustrate the impact those strategies have on organizational culture, and show how you can move the needle. This session will give women the permission (and evidence) to support the talents and values they bring to the workplace as effective strategies to move the needle, and illustrate how they can support people and clear their calendars of many “box-checking” obligations. This isn’t a theoretical leadership discussion—the session will provide concrete examples of ways women can enjoy leading.

Sometimes taking a huge risk leads to the opportunity of a lifetime. A native southerner, Susan Jarvis moved to Fargo in 2010 and took on anything bigger than she’d ever done in her career. At this session, she will share that journey. Learn how she took risks and met challenges to ultimately execute on the project of her career – being a part of building, staffing and operationalizing the new $500 million Sanford Medical Center. Throughout this project, she learned first-hand how to motivate a large workforce, have fun even while worried that you will fail miserably, adjust along the way, listen to understand, and maximize the talent and skills of everyone involved.

The 53,000-acre regional training center is located near Little Falls, Minnesota. Our group spent time observing maneuver training as well as engaging in weapon simulation training. Attendees also got to learn more about the 2nd Combined Arms Battalion, 136th Infantry Regiment, a Minnesota Army National Guard battalion headquartered in Moorhead that has one of its major units at Camp Ripley. We heard many positive remarks from those that attended. Thank you to everyone who made this trip possible as it served educational and interesting for our attendees. MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Simply put, we help organizations buy and use technology. Our goal is to provide solutions that improve the quality of not only our customers’ lives, but also their business, with a focus on preventing technology from controlling their lives. —Tom McDougall President & CEO

What makes your organization unique? We have three principles:

• Safety Principle The safest place we should be is in our homes, the second safest is at High Point Networks. We have each other’s backs and we honor our commitments and team members are encouraged to make decisions independently when needed. Refrigerator Friends Principle • We all have two types of friends—those we formally usher into our living rooms and sip teas with, and those who don’t stop at the door but head directly to the refrigerator and find a place to sit. We encourage our team members and customers to be the latter. We want relationships. • Firehose Principle If another team member is “on fire,” we have two choices— stand around and watch them burn hoping to move up the ladder if they fail or go get a fire hose. Our customers know that within our organization, we grab the fire hose to make sure our customer always comes first and the task at hand gets completed. There’s that trust there. 24  THE BRIDGE  •  SEPTEMBER 2018

What do these principles have to do with being an outstanding IT team? Mainly nothing. But because we live these principles, you will not find a more caring, friendly or fun group of people to work with. In the technology world, its inevitable something will go wrong and you will want our team by your side when that happens. Our culture is easy to live, but hard to describe—come see what it’s about.

Are there any initiatives you’re focusing on right now?

High Point Networks has, for several years, been developing a cyber security practice that is scalable and capable of being implemented in any environment, large or small. Recently, our partner Palo Alto Networks announced their support of a Cyber Security training program that will be offered as a degree from Bismarck State College. In August, there was a meeting of almost all the major stakeholders throughout government, K-12, higher education, the National Guard and the general workforce to discuss an overall statewide strategy for training citizens on cyber security diligence, and High Point Networks is excited to be part of these conversations.

We will continue our participation in the implementation of the overall strategy through technical training and user workshops offered through both the educational system, and through other channels such as Chamber events. We anticipate the model we are developing in North Dakota will be duplicated in other states, and discussions with South Dakota have already begun.

What is one thing you most want others to know about you?

As High Point Networks continues to grow into one of the region’s top providers of voice of and data network solutions, one thing will always be the same—our values.

What’s your best business tip?

Find people smarter than you and partner with them—either as team members or mentors.

Welcome Leadership class of 2018–19

Last month, the Leadership Fargo Moorhead West Fargo class of 2018-19 started off their 10-month program. Diving right in, Chamber President and CEO Craig Whitney welcomed the class and members of the planning committee spoke about what to expect and how to prepare for the coming months.

PROGRAM SPONSORS

Next up, Mitch Johnson, CoreLink Administrative Solutions, helped the class discover their communication styles and, more importantly, how to flex those styles to work with others. Along with some ice breakers, networking actives and preparing their groups for the Community Change Initiative written proposals, the day was full of fun and excitement. While the class has only just begun, we are certain this group of business leaders will make a lasting impact on our community, and we couldn’t be more excited to see what lies ahead. YEA!: YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS ACADEMY

Back to school means back to business! As area schools are getting back into the swing of things, the Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) is gearing up for another year of helping budding entrepreneurs bring their big ideas to life, and we need your help in promoting this opportunity to students in our community! YEA! is a 25-week program that uses a projects-based curriculum to help middle and high school students develop their own real businesses. Although students are not required to launch the businesses they create in YEA!, our goal is to help them create a concept that could be launched. Students will learn from local and guest speakers, go on field trips to area businesses, work one-on-one with mentors who will help them write their business plans, and will pitch their ideas to investors in an event similar to ABC’s Shark Tank.

Running October through May, YEA! meets on Wednesdays from 4 to 7 p.m. on the campuses of Concordia College, Minnesota State University Moorhead and North Dakota State University. If you know a student in grades 6 through 12 who is creative, dedicated to his or her ideas and eager to learn the ins and outs of developing a business in a fun environment with students from across the metro, please encourage them to apply today!

YEA!

Applications can be found at fmwfchamber.com/YEA. Contact Katie Ralston at kralston@fmwfchamber.com or by calling 218.359.0511 for more information or to nominate a student.

In addition to graduating from the program with a business that they are passionate about, students leave YEA! with stronger communication skills, are able to collaborate more effectively with others and can generate creative solutions to problems. Recent graduates have also expressed an appreciation for the community connections and friendships they developed through the program.
