In fact, acetate frames are the leader of the retro craze that has lasted from the past. However, recently, in addition to rectangular acetate frame, new eye design and metal frames are also rising as a hot keyword of the fashion trend. Circular eye frame that emerged as fashion eyewear trend from the end of last year. Circular frame commonly describes as Harry Potter, John Lennon glasses is widening the preference due to recent frequent wearing of many celebrities. As the designs with various colors and materials are gradually introduced, the range of consumers’ choices was further widened. And a transformed circular frame called as p3 shape which was popular in the mid-1990 also began to receive attention. Such circular frame changes images variously depending on colors and materials. While fancy pop colors with acetate frame material present a cute image, a circular frame made of a matt metal material gives intellectual and artistic feelings. Also, the metal frame in which Classic Art Deco patterns are engraved shows even nostalgia of old days and philosophical look. Circular frame glasses have the design going well with a person with an oval-shaped face of a broad forehead and narrow jaw. A round circular frame is a big help in covering a broad forehead but has the disadvantage of making your round face look rounder. Clip On that can be used like sunglasses by attach-

The glasses industry related representative explained that “more and more people wear eyewear to find their personality, thinking it as fashion”, saying “this retro fad is inspiring a new wind called diversification in the standardized product design exclusively occupied by acetate frame in the past.” And he emphasized, “Glasses manufacturers and distributors should quickly identify the trend that consumers want and release the product satisfying it.”

Our frames have no allergies occured and designs are competitive compare to other companies. About how many products do you carry? Until now, more than 1000 kinds of products have been produced. Since nowadays, the trend of consumers changes by the minute; we are developing a wide range of products to meet customers’ needs. I heard that your company is operating the separate design room for the development of a variety of products. Actually, design is the life of a product. If design is not new, the product is lifeless. Starting with 3 people in the early foundation but now we have 10 designers are operating the company. I feel that it is still lacking.

Since established at the end of 2006, it has produced luxury frames. Following its own brand, Frank Custom, it produced Frank Kid for children in 2008. As shown in being re-established as corporation in 2009 and producing Frank Jam etc., it is growing into a company loved by customers.

Tell us about Children’s Eyeglasses, Frank Kids products. In the meantime, children’s eyewear sector has been a blind spot. Parents thirsted for high-quality products with excellent design. By improving the quality of our products, children’s glasses of the children’s eyewear market which was dominated by imports are being replaced by domestic products. Tell us the future strategy of World Trend. To keep pace with the global era, we will tackle the world market aggressively. The domestic market is important but we will actively find a market abroad by diversifying the areas of a global village. SUNGSAN is a company which was established in 1988 and produces precision molds and injecting products such as remote controls and mobile phones. It practices industrial-educational cooperation with local famous universities based on its know-how on mold-making for a long time, and is acknowledged with technical skills of their products by customers and has built its reputation by preparing a productmanufacturing system with many kinds of the newest CAD/CAM software and precision mold processing machines required for developing products and making molds. It has been certified with the quality of its products and managing power in various fields including ISO9001 certificate in molding and injecting in 2004, technically innovated company in 2007, a venture company, a management innovation company and a company producing components and materials. On January, 2011, it built a system for product design, mold-making and product-manufacturing by applying Poly Carbonate materials, and developed molds for mass-production for the first time in the glasses industry and produced 1.2 million sets of model 3D glasses within the shortest period. In the process, it took out a patent for molds for manufacturing eyeglasses frame which enables injection molding outside the eye-glasses frame and it method, and a patent for mold structure about a slide device which forms a film injecting entrance to eye-glasses frame for stereoscopic images.

With this, it developed a mold for eyeglasses frame using Ultem material on May, 2011 and launched a product. Its product is acknowledge as an excellent product by customers with stable and refined design as the product has high density, excellent elasticity strength and tensile force using 3D design and simulation program which enables the product not to be broken or changed in shape when being applied with force, and also, it is designed in one-touch assembling structure and a bolt-assembling structure. A person related to SUNGSAN explained that this eye-glasses frame manufactured based on its know-how on molding and injecting for 3-year researching period has improved lens combining power and a problem in lens, and its end piece is designed uniquely, able to operate softly and naturally with refined design. Though SUNGSAN has a factory in Daegu, in order to expand the ability to manufacture products in the field of injection, it divided the factory in one for developing products and manufacturing molds in Daegu and the other for manufacturing injection products in Gumi in 2010.

Heil is a pure Korean word which means ‘shining like bright sunlight.’ Its meaning in English means ‘the sun’, which harmonizes the meaning in Korean. Heli started its business in 2007 and established Heli Corporation in 2010. Ultem Korea is a medium-sized company which has produced its own brands and OEM since the early 1990s and is trying to spread Ultem. A few years ago, it produced the frames of TR material of KartRider and Maple Story through licensing with the game company, Nexon, drawing great responses from kids and recently, attracts attention of the industry by releasing SUPERSTAR, the frame of Ultem material. Ultem mold of Ultem Korea is characterized by the fact that R&D was conducted based on precision of the manufacturing technology of existing automobile mold. Mold, Patent Application No. 10-2011-0144243, increased the efficiency of production and the accuracy of the product by significantly improving existing injection removal method and removing injection more easily. Also, one of the characteristics is to reduce the damage risk of mold. Until now, Ultem Korea has released 20 models and products of a variety of colors. The official of Ultem Korea explains Ultem as follows: “It is suitable for the material of eyeglass frames because it has high strength compared to weight and even if it is thinner than TR material, it has more strength and resilience than it.�

In addition, it has various advantages as follows: There is no corrosion compared to the existing metal material due to excellent chemical resistance. Non-toxic material has proven by EU food agency, U.S FDA, ISO 10993 No transformation. Also, for the popularization of high-quality Ultem, Ultem Korea made a consortium called Ultem Korea last year. Existing glasses injection companies, coating companies that have worked in Daegu exert their efforts to share model design and injection with the member companies or are requested to produce high-precision mold of Ultem and distribute profits.

Eyebell Optical was established in 2003, and a junior manufacturer of eyewear which produces about 20,000 sets monthly. Eyebell Optical which established a company based on a strong technical skill and experience constructed its own sales network domestically with a casual brand ‘ANGSI’ started in 2003, ‘EYE#’ followed the path in 2005, and continuously launched ‘BASSET’, a luxurious brand in 2006, recording a vertical climb of sales figure. How did you get to start Ultem glasses? The global trend of glasses is acetate-rimmed frames. TR frames which are light and good wearing sensation among the acetate-rimmed are dominating the global optical market. I discovered the ultem material as I was looking for a glasses frame that is upgraded from TR frames. What is the R&D scale and investment? Ultem requires much investment money in molding. Over USD 4 million of capital was invested so far, and I am planning to continue investing more. Broad R&D activities on materials and design are being consistently implemented. What are the strong points of Ultem glasses? First of all it is light and comfortable to wear. It also boasts excellent elasticity and head resistance. They are glasses made of harmless antiseptic and antibacterial Ultem material. In particular, by using a special screw and minimizing the shake of the temple, the ‘Unid’ presents robustness and outstanding fit. How is the Ultem material being supplied? The whole quantity is imported from abroad since ultralight weight, chemical resistance, etc are considered. Only the materials proven by U.S. FDA are used. 40

Are there any plans for domestic and overseas distribution? The product is being actively released today. For now, it is planned to be supplied by recruiting national agencies. Tell us about your new products. We developed a.1.60 photochromic Lens. The strength of the product is that comfort and durability get better when coming out thin in high refractive. There are two kinds, hard coating and mono way. Other than a 1.60 photochromic lens, we are developing 1.60, 1.67 Polarized lenses for the first time in Korea. What kind of meaning does the product of Korea optical Clex have? Clex is a combination of the words, Clean, Clear, Excellent and means clean and clear highest quality lenses and we are doing our best in the all production processes such as casting, coating, RX etc. to achieve the meaning of the brand.

What about the overseas export status? Korea optical is strong in Europe export. Europe puts quality before price. In the countries prioritizing quality, the price does not matter. In the meantime, we have supplied products to about 70 countries. RX lens are being actively exported to U.S-Japan etc. as well as Europe. How should be eyeglass lens dealt with? The first is eye examination, second is correct lens processing and lastly but not least third is accurate fitting. All three points should be harmonized well. Superiority of Korean optical instrument to the world Domestic optical instrument companies started to enter the overseas exporting market in 1999 when Huvitz started to try exporting its products in the North American market. Then, as domestically famous companies such as Pichina Optic, Unicos, Potec, ViewMTech and Visslo entered the overseas markets competitively, the superiority of domestically-produced optical instrument started to be popularized. Entering into the overseas markets of domestic optical instrument which competes with famous products of Japan getting the upper hand technically in the overseas markets has grown despite a taunt that it would be but a drop in the ocean, which makes our products to be used in many places of the world after about 10 years.

Exporting results of domestic companies are about 50 million dollars annually. Huvitz accounts for 70~80% of it, holding its place as a leading company, and Pichina Optic, Unicos and Potec follow it. According to domestic optical instrument companies, they explain that “Awareness of domestic products has increased much,” and they emphasize that “Domestic optical instrument companies will achieve constant growth by searching for new markets. New products of Pichina Optic are establishing a solid foothold in overseas markets for technical skills and brands,” and emphasizes that “We are making the most effort for increasing exporting volume steadily by searching for new markets such as Africa.” A person in charge of marketing in Huvitz emphasizes that “As we are increasing market share in wide areas such as the Central and South America, United States and Europe, we will be equipped the equal competitiveness as Nidek and Topcon.” Also, he suggests the future vision saying that “Huvitz which focuses on the quality, price competitiveness and constant development of new products will stand on tiptoe as a leading company someday.”

Pichina Optic is the leading company in domestic optical instrument industry. It was established in 1965, and a company which established a foothold in domestic market with a manual grinder and a manual phoropter where overseas and Japanese famous companies have mainstream. It currently concentrates on export and domestic consumption by producing major instruments including automatic eye-examining machines, automatic phoropters, unit tables for eye-examination and non-pattern automatic grinders. It concentrated on company and product PR activities by participating in overseas major optical exhibitions steadily. As a result, it increases exporting volume every year, and eye-examining equipment sets and lens-processing machinery are receiving a good response in the world. Major exporting countries include USA, Germany, Turkey, Vietnam and South America, and currently, it tries to enter Russian, Indian and African markets. By increasing exporting volume every year, it showed actual exports of 1.5 million dollars in 2010, and is expecting 30~50% growth rate every year. Huvitz is a company which first succeeded to localize the examining equipment for ophthalmic clinics and optician’s shops which had been dependent on

products from overseas. It is leading the advancement of domestic optical technology as well as release of various new products by leading product development through superior researching human resources accounting for 40% of executives and staffs. Also, as it performs a new challenge to enter a new business field such as microscope industry, there is much attention towards this company. With the first export to North America in 1999, it started to popularize the superiority of domestically-produced optical instrument, and its actual exports account for 80% of the annual sales figure. It achieved 30 billion KRW of exports in 2009 and 40 billion KRW in 2010 in partnership with about 180 partners from about 120 countries, and records 20~30% of growth results annually. Products of Huvitz are divided into eye-examining equipment and lens-processing equipment. Automatic eye-examiners have develop into a major product as it accounts for more than 30% of the sales in the world, and pattern-less grinders are also entering into the market rapidly, expecting a good result in the future. I heard that the 2013 Asia Pacific Optometric Congress (APOC) would be held in Korea, Can you please explain what is APOC? APOC organized by APCO is the world-best global symposium that one thousand members attend every year. APCO is the most influential branch of the WCO. Established in 1978, it is a regional organization for Asia and the Pacific with representation on the WCO Governing Board with 21 member states. Members of APOC include 21 countries like Australia, Cambodia, Canada, China, Fiji, Hong Kong, India, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and the US. Why do you think South Korea was chosen? KOA emphasized merits Korea has: the number of schools with faculty of optometry and of expected participants, expected venue for the congress (COEX), and Korean food. The most appealing factor was I think Korea’s advanced glasses infra and Korean optometrists’ capability that enabled the passage of the law banning sales of glasses and contact lens on the Internet first in the world, the greatest wish of the world optometrists. How is the preparation of the APOC 2013 going? Last year, South Korea was honorably chosen as a venue for the APOC 2013 in Singapore. Under the slogan “Education is the future,”KOA has continuously strived to help Korean optometrists be recognized as experts not only at home but also in the international stage and I believe that our efforts bearfruit of holding the APOC 2013. Furthermore, we have the APOC preparation committee run and so I am sure that the congress will be the best opportunity for Asian and Pacific experts to exchange the latest information and knowledge.

APCO introduces various programs such as the general meeting for members of the executive committee, symposiums and exhibitions by holding the world symposium every 2 year. In 2013, it is held in Korea from Oct. 2nd to 4th, and the world opticians will get together in 63 Convention Center. APOC is a large-scale symposium where opticians from 21 countries in the Asia Pacific area exchange the newest information and studies. The fact that the Korean Optometric Association has attracted 2013 APOC can be interpreted that the ability of Korean opticians is globally acknowledge and the future potential receives attention. For holding the 2013 APOC successfully, Akio Kanai, the president of APCO, Dr. George Woo, the ex-president of WCO, Pr. Carly Lam of the Polytech University in Hong Kong and Dudy visited Korea, reviewed preparation for the symposium and sites, and started

to prepare APOC 2013 in earnest. As for the subject of this symposium, KOA is supposed to select an appropriate subject considering the policy for the government and for the people and for the direction in the future and to decide by discussing with APCO member countries.
