Big change to come in the South East Asian market such as Myanmar and Singapore

Opticians

Consumers

(experts)

There is growing uncertainty in global economy due to recession in advanced economies like the US and Europe and stagnant growth rate of emerging countries. In such circumstances, Korean companies need to make effort to find opportunities in overseas markets.

in neighboring nations is likely to have a positive effect on Singapore. Expansion in electronic manufacturing, wholesale trade, traffic engineering, and construction, is supporting overall economy, which can lead to active trade with Korean exporters.

From 2013, reports on the prospect of world economy are published by research institutions in seminars and Korean companies have released analyses on response to these data, showing their determination to advance to overseas markets with a new attitude.

Eyewear companies will likely to respond quickly as they have considerable influence in both domestic and export markets, with respectable awards including Trade Award and Export Tower.

Notably, unexplored markets in South East Asia including Myanmar are likely to be opened soon, with large-scale projects of infrastructure in plan. In 2013, the global status of Myanmar is set to rise as a result of South East Asian Games and ASEAN presidency in 2014. Also, by 2030, the national income per capita is expected to reach 2,000 to 3,000 USD, and Myanmar is said to be the ‘rising star of Asia.’ So far, despite its potential, there has been low interest among Korean companies in Myanmar due to political and market circumstances, but the trend has changed after the Myanmar government continues its effort to open and reform the market. Also, Singapore is still offering attractive business environment. Even in global recession, the strong growth and consumption

To succeed in the global market, companies must improve consumer satisfaction. In addition to developing new products, they need to be engaged in constant communication with manufacturers, opticians (experts), and consumers, to produce products that satisfy everyone and control quality for safe and reliable products. The company image must be improved in terms of reliability, through steady sales policies to become a trustworthy partner. Based on product quality and reliability, the companies must make effort to make products accommodating consumers’ needs. Also, for globalization of the companies, they need to develop communication skills among the staff and practice global mindset with brand power. Kwon, Kee-Hyuk

Interview with Ms. Sarah Gillingham, The CEO of Tots specs

British parents like Tomato glasses. The following is an interview with Ms. Sarah Gillingham, the CEO of Tots specs which is Tomato Glass’ distributor in the UK. -First of all congratulations. You won the prize of Optra Fair Awards 2013. How do you feel? I’m very glad. The judges are very renowned figures in the UK spectacles industry. It’s great pleasure to be chosen and awarded by such judges. -Why are you visiting South Korea this time? I’d really like to deliver my gratitude to Tomato Glass in person in this country for making those good spectacles. And I also wanted to see the colors of new products this time in advance. -What is the reaction to Tomato Glass products in the UK? They really like them. They especially do so because the glasses are what they’ve imagined and wanted. Spectacle shops and hospitals dealing with the products also highly regard about them for their functionality. -I understand there are various eye wears for children in Europe. What do you think the strong points of Tomato Glass products are, compared with others?

I’ve used all products of other European companies but no company can compete with Tomato Glass’ functionality. With one single pair of glasses, I can adjust Tomato’s product in each part to make it better fit for each different children. In this sense, I believe the company produces top-notch spectacles. -So you’ve used diverse children’s spectacles in Europe. What do you think the most important thing in children’s eyewear? Children’s glasses should not make kinds uncomfortable when they wear them. Further in this sense, the glasses should feel easy even for kids to fall asleep while wearing them, light enough for kids, and have flexible nose pads and temples to be adjusted to the face of growing children. Tomato Glass products satisfy these all requirements and it was very amazing and innovative. -How do you see the children’s eyewear market will develop in the future? It’s positive. Parents in the UK really love it. More and more kids need to wear glasses and this is when more functional glasses are needed. Tomato Glass, as it is very well received especially by spectacle shops and hospitals, is expected to perform better in the country in the future as well.

What is the most popular frame material in the Korean market? We have gathered the information with Eye N Shop which is managed by Korea Optical Industry Support Center. Eye N Shop is Korea’s largest eyeglass wholesale B2B site with over 120 registered eyeglass manufacturers and distributors. Especially, Eye N Shop has a category named ‘Consumers’ Best’, which ranks popular products and the sales of each week. This category collects weekly sales in all categories provided on Eye N Shop including materials such as Ultem and TR, sunglasses, and imported glasses to help optical shops select products. Let us take a look at the most popular eyeglass rim materials from the ‘Customers’ Best’ category provided by Eye N Shop.

eye N shop -TR glass rims (Purchase Rate 54%) As a low-price material, it is one of the most popular eyeglass rims. Mostly, it refers to TR glass rims that are produced by injecting molding. The rim does not break even if bent at over 90 degrees, extremely flexible and elastic, which makes it semi-permanent, and has light weight, and, therefore, does not leave marks on the face. Also, it is used for sports goggles because of these strengths. However, the coating falls off after using it for a long time. -Loid (Purchase Rate 1%) Generally, it used to refer to celluloid-based glass rims, but now it includes high-end plastic rims based on acetate. Celluloid is highly durable and offers flexible fitting, but is weak from heat and has limited colors. Acetate is stronger to heat and does not become discolored by UV rays. It is mostly made by trimming a resin plate and polishing for sophisticated and glossy finish. -Ultem (Purchase Rate 5%) Ultem was developed by GE in the US and refers to eyeglass rims made with polyetherimide (PEI), which is currently produced by the Saudi Arabian state oil company SABIC. It is especially made for medical and chemical devices as well as aircraft components, and is strong against heat and shock while being light in weight. However, it is difficult to control the injection temperature and, if it is not well-controlled, the material can easily break. In addition, it has strong FST (flame, smoke, toxicity) performance and elasticity, which makes it a popular material for glass rims, especially in Japan. However, the mold is more expensive than other injection glass rims, which raises the production cost.

-Double injection (Purchase Rate 4 %) Generally, double injection rims refer to eyeglass rims with sophisticated design that have two colors inside and outside by injection instead of by painting. Double injection eyeglass rims are produced by two methods: one that creates twocolored injection plate and processes it by CNC and the other that injects two color materials into the mold at the same time before injection. Because the injected product already has color, there is no risk of painting coming off and it is mostly made with TR, which makes it lightweight. -Flex (Purchase Rate 3%) Although it originally comes from the English word flexible, flex is now used to refer to the material and it is comfortable to wear because of its light weight and flexibility. Grilamid TR90, made by the Swiss chemical company EMS, is BPA-free, meaning it does not produce endocrine disrupter, and mostly used for environmentally-friendly baby products like milk bottles. It is very durable and light in weight because its specific gravity is very close to that of water. -Metallic rims (Purchase Rate 9%) It refers to metal-based glass rims in general. Recently, as a result of vintage trend and consumers’ preference for light eyeglasses, sale of metallic rims is continuously increasing. Most widely used materials include stainless steel, titanium, monel, and gold. Recently popular designs are such as P3, which used to be known as John Lennnon or Harry Potter glasses, and wirerims, which is extremely lightweight and being produced by many manufacturers. Sungsan Precision Co., Ltd.

A great positive response in the market of

‘feather-like 0.8mm-8g eyeglass frame’ " Sungsan Precision Co., Ltd, a global high-tech firm creating customer-oriented solution, specializes in producing high-tech and high-value molds. Based on its technology and accumulated know-how, the firm will keep grow to a specialized one by researching and developing core parts which are highly competitive in terms of technology and quality among the industry." Based on its know-how of mold production having been accumulated over the last three decades, Sungsan Precision Co., Ltd (CEO, Jae-Yel Suh) has been performing industryacademia cooperation with prestigious local universities. By applying the state-of-the-art software necessary to develop and manufacture products and establishing the process equipment and production system, the firm shortens a period of product development. With its one-stop system,

it produces high quality molds. Also it establishes a total injection mold solution process for quick responses. As a result, the firm recently developed a light and thin eyeglass frame of 0.8mm and 8g, giving a fresh impact on the optical industry. As shown in the PR phrase of 'featherlike 0.8mm eyeglass frame', the firm emphasizes lightness, and consequently the newly developed product earns a positive response from distributors and consumers. Having researched and developed the injection mold of Ultem eyeglass frames over the last three years, the firm shows a new aspect of the optical industry. Up to now, weight is of importance in developing eyeglass frames. method using Ultem material was patented (Patent no. 2011-0121804), and the two color tone eyeglass frame using Ultem material and its manufacturing method was also patented (Patent no. 012-0042632). Based on the patents, the firm launched 25 types of Ultem eyeglass frames. Sungsan Precision Co., Ltd developed and launched Ultem optical molds and eyeglass frames for the first time in the industry, drawing a lot of attention. The Ultem eyeglass frames launched by Sungsan Precision Co., Ltd are developed with the use of 3D design and simulation so that they have excellent density, elastic intensity, and tension, and are neither broken nor transformed by excessive force. The frames are also designed in the one-touch way so that they are stable and refined. Their lens binding force and separation were remarkably improved compared to the existing ones'. Also their end pieces are uniquely designed so that the natural operation is made possible. Since the frames are ultra-light, they don't slip down. The improvement in a sense of wearing glasses made the frames as much light and comfort as feather. Also the Ultem material of the frames increases electric insulation so that the frames are excellent in blocking electromagnetic waves, and effective for non-toxicity, heat-resistance, and stability. The material is an eco-friendly one used for aircraft and infant goods.

The management principles of the firm are customer satisfaction, technological management, and efficient management. Its management philosophy is 'family-like continuous workplace on the basis of mutual trust'. Under the motto of ‘Secure the best competitiveness through technological development in the industry. Create a pleasant workplace atmosphere through harmony and unity', the firm is preparing for the future. Korean eyeglass frame market is changing. Metallic eyewear, which has been less popular since 2004, overpowered by horn-rimmed glasses, is leading the trend again among Korean consumers. ‘Acetate glasses’, made of plastic, became a fashion item for its diversity in colors and designs. After the mid-90s when rimless or half-rimmed glasses were popular, acetate glasses became more prevalent since 2004 and a ‘must-have’ for fashion people as they can be worn with any clothing regardless of age and gender.

5

GANEKOUNIT, <New Avenue> model. GK 204-6

A source from the Korean eyeglass industry said, “Fashion changes all the time, but the acetate glasses have stayed in fashion for quite a long time.” Even 10 years ago, the ratio between acetate frame and metallic frame was 5 to 5 in manufacturing, but it is now about 8 to 2, indicating the decline of metal-rimmed eyeglasses. Popularity of acetate frame naturally meant decline of metalrimmed eyeglasses, and the former quickly spread and expanded its domain in the eyeglass market whereas metalrimmed eyeglasses began to sink. In Daegu, metal processing

-42-

-NE W S-

Metal

Acetate companies attempted to change to plastic materials like Ultem or TR, or shut down the business completely. However, the metal-rimmed eyeglass market is about to rise again. Combination eyeglass frames, which combines Ultem or TR with metal is becoming popular among Korean consumers, and acetate frames, which remained strong for more than 10 years, is beginning to decrease. Combination eyeglasses are favored now because consumers became tired of the same designs and materials that were popular in the market for a long time. In addition, vintage or retro style is leading the trend worldwide and Korean consumers, too, are looking for more unique and original eyewear. Popularity of metallic glasses can be also explained by the media. More celebrities are now wearing metallic glasses, which affect the preference and interest of general consumers. Currently, combination frames are more preferred by consumers who are sensitive to the eyeglass weight. The combination of plastic and metallic materials results in lighter, more unique and sophisticated eyewear than conventional plastic rims. Particularly, combination frames made with acetate and metal is most popular. The front is made with acetate, which looks like conventional acetate frame, and the temple with metal, which gives the eyewear a neat look as well as lightness. A source from the Korean eyewear industry said, “combination glass rims made with acetate and metal became popular

since last year and will remain so this year as well.” He added, “Consumers are now moving to combination frames and classic metallic rims, and recently, less people are looking for thick acetate frames” In fact, in 2013 Eyewear Design Competition, combination eyeglass rims made with metal and plastic based on injectionmolding technology won the first prize, which indicates change in the Korean eyewear trend and industry. Currently, in Korea, other metallic materials than combination glass rims are coming into the market. Last year, eyewear companies are launching various simple wire-rimmed glasses from the last fall season. The largest factor in recent popularity of metallic frames as well as new rise of wire frames is improved wear based on reduced weight, but the classic style and over-sized antique look is also an important reason. Acetate frames can be worn by anyone, but metallic or combination rims create unique yet simple looks that consumers are looking for. Rise of metallic and combination frames increased the market share of metal processing companies, which is a positive change in the market that used to be dominated by plastic frames. The market is gaining balance because of continuing popularity of acetate frames and change in recent trend and consumers’ preference, and this positive competition may result in mutual growth and activation of the market. 2014 Korean Contact Lens Market Will Be Led by One-Day and Regular Replacement Models

With consumers’ demand for convenience and eye health, the contact lens market will likely be led by one-day use and disposable lenses this year as well. Especially, according to the sales reports from different manufacturers, one-day use lenses were especially strong in the market last year, and the regular replacement lenses like Biofinity of Coopervision has been popular among the fans. A source from the industry said, “Like last year, one-day use lenses will continue to grow this year.” He added, “Consumers’ high demand for eye health and fashion will continue the popularity of functional and circle lenses, too.” Johnson & Johnson Korea Vision Care(CEO Chung Byungheon) announced launching ‘Acuvue Oasys,’ the 2-week use contact lens that used to be distributed through ophthalmic clinics, in optical shops. Acuvue Oasys is the best seller in the world disposable contact lens market because of its comfortable wear. Especially, its quality has been proven in South Korea as the product has been prescribed for patients who need to recover after corneal surgery. The silicon hydrogel material and Hydraclear Plus technology keep the eyes moist and comfortable.

Also, the triple care of high moisture supply and oxygen transmissibility, and FDA Class 1 UV protection (UVG over 99%, UVA over 90%) protect the eye health even in harmful environment. Alcon Korea vision care department(Managing Director Chu Kyeong-eui) said, like last year, the company will have aggressive marketing on the main product Freshlook Illuminate this year. This year, light brown has been added to the product range to expand options for consumers as well as improving their satisfaction. The popularity of ‘Freshlook Illuminate’ lies in the color and design that suit the pupils of Koreans and make them look natural and defined. Aqua-Release Technology releases moisture whenever the eyes blink, providing moist and comfortable wear all day long. Also, the excellent central stability minimizes decentration, which occurs when the lens move from the iris when wearing circle contact lenses. Particularly, Yuna from K-POP group called Girls’ Generation is the model for the product, and, this year, it will be expended to Taiwan as well.

Bausch + Lomb Korea(CEO Kim Hyeong-jun) launched Biotrue ONEday, a premium one-day lens with new material in January. Biotrue ONEday is made with the new material HyperGel and contains moisture level of 78%, same as cornea, to provide comfortable wear from the first time. Before the product launch, the company conducted a visiting evaluation with 117 consumers who wore the lenses for a week, 10 hours a day on average. In the result, 90% of the participants answered they were satisfied with the performance and comfort of the product and 93% with the eyesight provided by Biotrue ONEday. The characteristics of Biotrue ONEday include comfortable wear based on the same moisture level as cornea, prevention of dryness with lipid layer of tear and sufficient oxygen supply to the eyes. CooperVision Korea(CEO Jeong Jong-gu)’s main product Biofinity toric has been steadily favored by its fans and became one of the most popular products of the brand. Biofinity is a silicon hydrogel lens designed with Aquaform Technology and the main product of CooperVision. Based on Aquaform Technology, the silicon chain is structured in a long form to provide sufficient oxygen so that moisture and oxygen is naturally combined and the moisture in the product is maintained. Biofinity provides natural moisture and soft wear without adding chemicals because of this material. Also, it offers great axis stability and comfortable wear to correct astigmatism in a simple and effective way. The wide ballast design that prevents rotation of the lenses provides stability while the smooth surface reduces friction between the lens and eyelid and minimizes discomfort when wearing astigmatic lenses. The clear eyesight correction provided by stable axis and long-lasting moisture are unique characteristics of Biofinity.

Interojo(CEO Rho Si-chul) pledged raising brand recognition and growth with optical shops through aggressive marketing this year. Clalen, the company’s main brand, showed strong performance last year, with the sales of Clalen Oneday growing 80% from the previous year and Clalen Oneday Iris (jazz black, soul brown) by 68%. The growth is expected to continue this year. Interojo explains the popularity of the products based on the improve moisture of the lenses based on Ultra 水[Soo] that allows integrating hyaluronic acid to the lens material. In other words, the comfortable wear increased repurchase rate and the high profit margin explains favorable response from opticians. ‘Clalen Oneday Iris’ also added hyaluronic acid to improve the initial wear and dryness. The black and brown color and 12.9mm print size create clear and beautiful pupils. The third Iris series, Rhapsody, is a two-tone circle lens based on black and brown for more natural pupils and stable fitting. Lee, Ji-Yeon

The DIOPS Secretariat has visited the world’s major fairs to promote DIOPS and attract many VIPs and big buyers for the success of DIOPS. As a result, it has been visited by the leaders of major optical organizations and associations around the world and the big buyers in the eyeglass industry and increased the number of buyers seeking Korean companies every year despite the world’s economic recess to prove that DIOPS has introduced the excellence of Korean products and achieved meaningful results for the increase in the exports of Korean eyeglasses and the development of eyeglass industry. According to the Center, it has applied the accumulated exhibition knowhow to fill the 2014 DIOPS with distinct events. The exhibition will be business-centered for the buyers and participating companies and will include various participatory and entertainment programs for the general visitors. It will also use this opportunity to active promote the fact that the eyeglasses are not just for the correction of visual acuity, but they are also about fashion and design. The Center will operate the 1:1 buyer matching program throughout the event to connect the buyers to the exporters and “business counseling” throughout the DIOPS period for the buyers to find the manufacturers they want and the manufacturers to explore the new markets. The organizations supporting the local exporters will be gathered to operate the joint public relations center to discuss and address various support policies, policies for the FTA, and the complaints of the businesses. Also, the Ophthalmic Optics Conference separately hosted by the Korean Society of Vision Science, the Korean Ophthalmic Optics Society, and DIOPS until last year will be integrated to hold the “International Optical Conference.” The keynote speaker will be Steven A. Loomis, the Vice-chairman of the American Optometric Association (AOA) and the Head of Designer of Luxottica, the major name in the eyeglass industry, will be invited along with many other speakers specialized in various topics to offer substantial training programs for the manufacturers, opticians, academics, and students. There are various things to enjoy for the visitors visiting DIOPS. “Beauty DIOPS Change Hall” that combines the eyeglasses with fashion, design, and beauty will show the makeup and hairstyles that match different styles of eyeglasses and “Optical Beauty Show” will be the bodypainting and fantasy makeup show focused on the eyeglasses. The “Caricature Experience” for the buyers and visitors will instantly create the caricatures of visitors wearing the eyeglasses or sunglasses and the “14th Korea Eyeglass Design Contest” will exhibit the winners from the previous events. The competition will add the product division this year to exhibit the special design products of eyeglass manufacturers. DIOPS actively uses the SNS to become friendlier and more open for communication through online channels. It is communicating with the eyeglass experts from around the world through the Facebook, Tweeter, Newsletter, and Homepage, and strongly believes that DIOPS will be the true global exhibition and the center of eyeglass industry. -51-

Overcome Eye Fatigue with Functional Lenses The interest in eye health is likely to continue this year. People today spend a lot of time in front of digital screens of computer and smartphone. The problem is these screens use mostly LED, which produces blue light that is harmful for eye health. Digital device screens use LED and other strong light source as backlight to produce bright screen, and LED produces strong blue light. Therefore, people today are increasingly exposed to blue light. Therefore, different lens manufacturers have launched bluelight prevention lens to protect health and reduce fatigue of

the eyes of modern people. Daemyung Optical (CEO K. S. Lee) launched a new blue-light lens at the start of this year. This multi-gas lens prevents blue that cause fatigue in the eyes and reduce chromatic aberration, offering clearer vision and reduced eye fatigue. In addition, it has no yellowing, prevents UV, and has water repellent coating and smooth surface, which makes it easy to remove dirt. Also, the glimmering caused by surface reflectance of conventional blue-light coating lenses, was reduced to protect healthy eyes of people who are sensitive to light or frequently use smart devices.

-52-

-NE W S-

Blue-Light prevention popular in the Korean eyeglass lens market Chemi Lens blue-light protection lens ‘CHEMI BRC’ is becoming popular in the market. The blue light protection is based on the optical characteristics of the 7-layered special disposition material, which is used for creating optimal vacuum evaporation coating designed values (reflective index, evaporation thickness, etc.) on the lens surface. The surface reflectance is controlled by designed values and the lights with short wavelength (blue light) is absorbed or reflected to prevent dazzling and fatigue on the eyes. An official from the company said, “Blue-light prevention lenses are already actively sold in foreign markets and will become popular in Korean market as well.” He added, “We received a large quantity order from other countries during the product development, which shows the quality of the

product.” Opticom (CEO Yun Cheol-ju ) launched Dio Blue, coated blue-light prevention lens, and made it into a PC eyeglass package for the online market. The company is raising awareness of blue-light glasses through keyword advertisement, Google display, viral and affiliation marketing. Dio Blue glasses maintain 30% of blue light prevention while allowing over 97% of visible light transmission, solving problems of conventional blue light prevention lenses such as color distortion and ghost image on the back of the lenses. The online shop for Dio Blue guides consumers who want prescription blue-light prevention lenses to find the nearest optical shops. Lee, Ji-Yeon
