3D Printer Becomes More Useful
3D printer is being rapidly developed recently after introduction of fused deposition modeling.
Recently, more eyeglass manufacturers are using a 3D printer for making product samples and even manufacturing products. The public became interested in 3D printers after, in May, a gun was made by using a 3D printer in the US, which was spread via YouTube and News. Also, the US president Barack Obama announced federal fund will be invested in building additional manufacturing hubs in other regions in the US, benchmarking success stories of research centers related to 3D printing manufacturing.
3D printers produce a 3D object by using plastic or metal as main material. While conventional printers printed letters or pictures on a paper based on documents on a computer, 3D printers print various solid objects based on 3 dimensional drawings. Development of 3D printers began 30 years ago, in early 1980s, as the company named 3D Systems in USA developed a printer that makes an object by hardening plastic liquid, for the first time in the world. The original purpose of a 3D printer was to make a prototype before

producing a product, as prototypes made of inexpensive and transformable materials can help find out possible problems of a product. For that reason, it has been used since 20 years ago by aircraft and car manufacturers, and there was no considerable difficulty as 3D drawing is used from the design stage. In the early days, plastic was mainly used for 3D printers, but now more manufacturers are using metals after they became available for processing. The price of printers has been reduced as well, and now, although it is still in the experimental stage, some 3D printers are developed as a home use model. According to the market research agency Gartner, the 3D printing market is expected to more than double from 1.68 billion dollar last year to 3.1 billion dollar by 2016, and 3D printers will soon become widely available even for home use as the price goes down. Especially, 3D printers can help improve cost efficiency as they allow small-scale production, and new product release, which is a welcome fact for manufacturing industries. It can be applied to various fields. Recently, an architecture company in Netherlands announced their plan to build a life-size building, rather than a model, with 3D printer, and, in Korea, it was adopted for medical technology and used for treating and recovering a face of a paranasal sinus cancer patient. Fashion industry is making shoes, jewelry, and even clothes with 3D printer, and experts expect that, in the future, edible products such as animal protein will be printable for cooking. Furthermore, in the fashion industry, a 3D printer manufacturer collaborated with fashion designers.
These shoes have been made by using 3D printer and displayed in Paris Fashion Week in July. Recently, 3D printer is used in various business fields.
A 3D printer manufacturer Stratasys, Ltd. recently showcased 12 pairs of shoes made with 3D printer at a couture show of Iris van Herpen during the Paris Fashion Week. The designer Van Harpen collaborated with the compatriot Dutch architecture Rem D Koolhaas to use a 3D printer of Stratasys for making the shoes, which were based on geometric structure inspired by natural elements. Iris van Herpen said, “To me, fashion is setting one’s unique borders and expressing them, and, in this project with Rem D Koolhaas, we used Stratasys’ 3D printing technology to create beautiful shoes with the natural style.” Iris van Herpen of Stratasys previously made a 3D printing dress with Professor Neri Oxman of MIT Meida Lab, and designed unique shoes based on tree root in this collaboration project with Rem D Koolhaas. The shoes were made of black and white rigid material, which were processed by Objet Connex and Objet Eden 3D Printer based on high resolution Polyjet that could complete the complex geometric structure into a design. The eyeglass industry is also moving fast in utilizing 3D printers.

Mykita developed a patented material called Mylon, a type of polyamide, and produces products based on it using 3D printer.
PQ eyewear, made by the architect Ron Arad using 3D printer, was inspired by spine of animals.
Mykita, a German eyeglass manufacturer, developed and patented Mylon, a polyamide material, and produces products using 3D print. Mykita Mylon collection won iF design awards in 2011 with innovative 3-dimensional glasses. Also, Ron Arad, a renowned architecture, showcased pq Eyewear in 2011 at France Silmo, which he designed by using a 3D printer and has unique shape, color, and material that enhanced its functionality. Especially, among the Corbs Line, Tample was inspired by the spine of an animal and is folded only inward, which provides great comfort when wearing the glasses. Moreover, many eyeglass manufacturers are taking advantage of a 3D printer that allows them to obtain the product more easily once they have a design, aiming to provide customized eyeware to consumers.
This service will enable customers to enter their face size, height of their nose, etc., as well as personal preference, and then the manufacturer will either print the customized eyeglasses or send the data to the customers’ own 3D printer. A source from the industry said, “Development of 3D printing technology can reduce the transportation time and cost as everything from sampling to production can be done in an office. However, the manufacturers and distributors will bear the most serious damage, because individuals will be able to make the products in their house by using 3D data sheets that are available online. Moon, Seong-In

Interview with Lee Sang-Tak, The Chairman of Korea Optical Industry Cooperative
We will support to improve the competitiveness of optical industry Korea Optical Industry Cooperative was founded in 1962 by eyeglass frame manufacturers. The members include manufacturers of eyeglass frame, relevant parts, equipment, and plating. The 50 years of their history contributed to development of the eyeglass industry through, for example, being selected as a participant in Chimeric, the united brand for Daegu, in 1997; designated as a Daegu specialization business by Small and Medium Business Administration in 1998; participating in MIDO, the largest optics exhibition in the world, in 2000 as the first Korean organization; organizing Daegu SME Fair 2001 and Daegu International Optical Show (DIOPS) in 2001; founding Korea Optical Industry Support Center in 2005; and when the 21st chairman Lee Sang-tak took office in February 2011. The chairman Lee told us about KOIC’s plan for future development.

-What is the new focus of KOIC after you took the office? ▲We are focusing on activating the cooperative, which can solve issues that cannot be dealt with by individuals. It is necessary to increase the number of members, and we are working on giving more benefits to the members. KOIC is also trying to find a way to link technology development projects to members, as well as promoting various projects such as material and design development that can benefit the members with added values. cooperative system with eyeglass-related organizations and review the regulations, system, and customs, in order to improve the distribution system and propose policy. Also, as a cooperative effort, KOIC promotes trial project and built the system for e-commerce among businesses, trains special technicians, recruits overseas trainees, and promotes DIOPS while continuing to strive for overall development of the industry. Recently, KOIC has been linked with the unfair trade report center, which makes effort to establish fair trade orders by increasing export based on improving competitive power and expanding the overseas markets, establishing distribution order and providing support in the domestic market, improving and managing cooperative-approved projects, enhancing training and education project, reinforcing organization, activating the organization’s operation and promotion.
- What is necessary for development of the Korean eyeglass industry? â–˛ In the midst of global economic recession, KOIC has expanded the overseas market through exhibition participation and developed brands based on new products and designs. As a result, although the export result of the eyeglass industry has decreased by 32% but that of eyeglass frames rose by 16%. In order to create solid industrial foundation of the eyeglass industry, KOIC is focusing on finding sales route. We will contribute to enhancing competitive power of each business by reinforcing our cooperation with the KOISC, which, I believe, are the efforts that must be made for development of the Korean eyeglass industry.

Korean Eyeglass Market
Expected To Continue Growing According to the survey on the Korean eyeglass market published last year, the entire eyeglass market grew by 6.7% between 2010 and 2011, while it only grew 0.4% in 2012 due to economic recession, with the market size estimated at 2.3 trillion KRW. Also, the sunglass and eyeglass market was reduced by 4.2% and 0.3% respectively from last year, whereas the contact lens market grew by 14.8% in 2011 and 6.8% in 2012, which is seen as the force that maintained the overall scale of eyeglass market.
-34-
-NE W S-
Contact lens market continues growth for over 10 years The contact lens market has been growing for more than 10 years all around the world thanks to the new material and technology development. Particularly, the market is entering a new phase with the development of silicon hydrogel, various disposable lenses, contact lenses for presbyopia, and cosmetic lenses. According to the contact lens market analysis participated by 36 countries last year, the average age of contact users around the world was 32. In Korea, it is 25, which is the second lowest following Nepal (24). Other Asian countries such as Singapore (28) and Taiwan (27) also showed lower age than western countries. This seems to be related to the proportion of cosmetic lenses in Asian markets. Also, while 80-90% of the lenses sold in the western countries are general spheric lens or toric lens, 40% of the lenses sold in Korea are cosmetic lenses.
Toric lenses account for 25% of the lenses sold around the world, while only 16% of the lenses prescribed in Korea are toric lenses in Korea. However, the manufacturers are enhancing education on toric lenses and opticians also recognize the importance of the market, which, therefore, is expected to grow in the future. Also, the silicon hydrogel lens market is growing at the moment, and it was reported by many studies to be clinically excellent since it was developed in 1999. However, due to the less comfortable feeling in comparison to conventional lenses, the market could not easily expand, but the material has been evolving constantly. Thanks to the effort, 36% of the lenses sold around the world are made of silicon hydrogel, although the figure is only 11% in Korea. The silicon hydrogel lens market is expected to be activated considering the lifestyle, environment, and eye health of consumers.

Korean eyeglass frames are popular for the lightness and strength Export of Korean eyeglass frames is continuing to rise. According to Korea International Trade Association, the export of eyeglass frames (HSK code 9030) increased by 16.4%p from last year, while export of sunglasses (HSK code 900410) decreased by 22.7%p. Eyeglass frames have shown continuous growth in export from 95.05 USD in 2009 to 122.9 USD in 2010, 120.11 USD in 2011, and 139.85 USD in 2012. Particularly, although the export to UK, Germany, and France decreased by 20% on average, export to Japan and China jumped by 71.3% and 56%. Experts attribute this increase to Korean manufacturers’ development of manufacturing process where they apply new materials such as TR 90, which is light and highly elastic, and Ultem, which has great strength and high heat distortion temperature, instead of conventional acetate, for the last few years. Also, the Korean Wave also seems to have made a positive effect on ‘made in Korea’ in other countries. Especially, TV commercials for famous Japanese eyeglass franchises like Zoff and Jins are mostly related to Korea. With the revival of Korean eyeglass frames, the number of eyeglass manufacturers, both in the number of businesses and people working in the industry, in Daegu is rising from 2009.

A source from an eyeglass frame exporter said, “The current increase of eyeglass frames is parallel to requests for the plastic frames, FSV, and SF lenses around the world.” As shown in the ‘proportion of progressive addition lens (see Table 1) in the world market’, the world eyeglass lens market is shifting from short focus lens to progressive lens. Free Form product range of Korean companies has the advantage of clear vision because of minimized ripples of the aspherical surface. Also, it has great coating quality and resistance against static electricity as well as durability, without yellowing. The accurate computer calculation allows design based on the position of the eyeglass on the user’s face, providing much wider and more comfortable vision than the conventional progressive lenses. WORLD TREND
New changing of frame design,
Worldtrend’s sensibility design The glasses are not a product of vision correction any more. In the past, the glasses considered as exclusive property for those who have poor eyesight. However, now it considers as a fashion item in common. Since the glasses have been regarded a fashion item and called “Eyewear”, design of the glasses become one of important element in fashion. Now in the middle of launching a variety of frames from every company, Worldtrend launched more special design which added to sensibility on design. Worldtrend established in 2006 and has been producing high quality frames. They produced with their own house brand “Frank Custom” and ‘Frank Kids’ produced for kids frames in 2008. Since Re-establishment in 2009, they produced “frank Gem” and have been growing by being loved by customer. As a result, they keep investing in design and improving quality. Currently they released over 1,000pcs
of frames. Worldtrend is still developing new frame such as Acetate frame, Pure Titanium frame and many more. CEO of Worldtrend, Bae Yu-hwan, runs own design team to develop a variety of frames. “I think the life of product is design. If the design is not new, the product will lose its life. We started with three designers at the beginning of founding. Now operates more than 10 designers but I’m still thinking, we are not enough.” They are keen on all the process to manufacture frames from design to producing. They are focusing on develop new designs to launch new brand, Ironiciconic, by collaborating with Design stuido “Callibrand” in April.

Ironiciconic expresses 20’s sensibility on frame. people who is hiding their unique charm. We use unique color on the glasses to make more natural and individual design. It’s not the way to use only one color on the whole frame. Two different colors are used on front and temple differently. “Ironiciconic” shows unique color design by using double colors. The point of “Ironiciconic” is hidden color with neat and unique color design.
Worldtrend has been developing eyewear design for over seven years and we challenged new design again. ‘Adding sensibility to design’ it was devised idea by them. The concept of emotional design has been aimed at 20’s young people. The design general manager Hong In-Soo said “This design development was inspired by free life style of 20’s. I think that 20’s is sensitive on colors. In the change of trend if they can show their personality, they will be interested in it. Therefore, this is “Ironiciconic” concept to express 20’s unique face and 20’s liveliness. “Ironiciconic” design was trying to express 20’s sensibility, especially, the colors. “Ironiciconic” frame is like ordinary
“Ironiciconic” frames are made with metal, acetate and TR. In the case of acetate, acetate frame is not used a whole frame to reduce the weight. And also, all models were added to metal material. If you see the combination of metal and non-metal with unique colors, you will notice how the “Ironiciconic” name was created. Worldtrend’s frames are well known for light and comfortable wearing. That shows the Worldtrend company philosophy which is to make the most comfortable glasses. The strength of Worldtrend’s frame is not only light and comfortable but also allergy free. As Nickel causes skin allergy, Worldtrend does not use Nickel but uses EVO FLEX, EVO STEEL instead which is not causing skin trouble. Verified functionality and a unique combination of visual, so, where can you see an attractive product.

Bon Jewelry Optical
Excellent Technology for Customer Satisfaction in Bon Jewelry
Founded in 1989, Bon Jewelry Optical has made its place in the history of Korean jewelry rimless frames, as the company has been producing only jewelry rimless frames for about 25 years. Jewelry rimless frames became popular in Korea about 10 years ago. They are also known as ‘jewelry eyeglasses’ or ‘handmade rimless eyeglasses,’ these eyeglasses look like a piece of art with unique cutting, cubic, drawing, and decorations.
of rimless frames became available. Between 1920 and 1950, there was 3-piece glasses made of a bridge and temple. The 3-piece rimless eyeglasses had oval, circular, or rectangular lenses according to the face shape, and temple with different colors, and, reportedly, opticians at that time provided more than 300 combinations. And then, in the 1980s, titanium and plastic began to be used for eyeglasses as the rimless eyeglasses evolved into lighter and more stylish designs. Especially, jewelry rimless glasses were the epitome of the diverse changes of rimless eyeglasses.
It was after the 1850s when the legs of the eyeglass frames started to have the form that can be hung on the ears like modern rimless frames, and this is allegedly when rimless frames appeared. Later, during the WWI, the original form
Jewelry rimless frames are said to have been first made for high myopia, because highly myopic people have difficulty wearing rimless frames because of the thickness of the lenses and distortion around the eyes. Therefore, jewelry rimless
-44-

frames minimized the disadvantages for high myopia by diagonally cutting the sides of the thick lenses from different angles to make them look thinner. The edge cutting removes simple design of rimless frames and adds shine, providing a sophisticated look. A more evolved version is adding cubic, thread or drawing on the outside of the lenses, using the cubic decoration that is normally used for eyeglass frame design on lenses. Sometimes, a flower or butterflies are drawn and colored as well. Korean opticians sometimes make jewelry rimless frames by themselves. For that reason, jewelry rimless frames are a highly profitable product for opticians, as rimless eyeglasses gain added values from beautiful decoration, refreshing design, aesthetic sense of the optician, and personality and taste of the customer. In other words, opticians can catch two birds with one stone. However, jewelry rimless frames also have a disadvantage. They take a lot of time for production. Also, because they need to be custom-made for customers with different eye sights, most opticians make them on their own from time to time. For that reason, very few manufacturers produce jewelry rimless frames in a large quantity in Korea. Mass production is difficult as the products require sophisticated technology and most business owners run their company alone as a former
optician. However, Bon Jewelry Optical considered this problem and invested a lot of costs from the beginning to develop a machine that cuts the lens on its own. Bon Jewelry Optical has a brand named ‘HESSEE’, which became a leading jewelry rimless frame in the world. The various products made by Bon Jewelry Optical resemble sophisticated pieces of artwork. The CEO Jae-Ryong Lee said, “Based on its ow n manufacturing process and machinery, Bon Jewelry Optical can mass-produce jewelry rimless frames with high quality. Especially, the company’s strong point is the accurate assembly with the error range of less than 1/100mm.” The lens cutting machine using diamond was developed by the company and allows making sophisticated customized products in a short period. In fact, a product that is ordered in China only takes 20 days until the customer receives the finished product.
-45-
-F ra mes-
Especially, the optically design lenses minimized distortion of high myopia lenses. Also, the eyeglasses are made with rigorous craftsmanship, based on minimized weight, comfort, and stability, bringing the highest customer satisfaction.
Also, user convenience is another strong point of Bon Jewelry Optical. First, no screw is used when assembling the glasses, which ensures solid finish and the users can easily wipe the lenses without feeling any obstacle. Also, parts used in all products are preserved for 10 years, for rapid customer service in case of damage during use.
purchasing and economic power of Chinese customers.” He added, “However, Bon Jewelry Optical is not going to settle for it and planning to participate in various exhibitions. Next year, the company will participate in MIDO exhibition in Italy to enter broader markets and promote the excellence of Korean eyeglasses.” Moon, Seong-In
In addition, an optician who sells Hessee can send the customer data to the head office for precise production without additional fitting work. For these reasons, Hessee is, despite the relatively high price, hugely popular in Asia including China. Bon Jewelry Optical entered the Chinese market 5 years ago and Japan 3 years ago and founded local branches. Although all manufacturing process is done in Korea, the company tries to provide rapid product supply and high quality customer service to buyers around the world. Mr. Lee explained, “Jewelry rimless frames are becoming more popular in China thanks to the economic boom. This shows the increasing

No more ‘SUNglasses’ Now, wear ‘BLUEglasses’ Most people know they need to protect their eyes from the UV rays. That is why many people wear ‘sunglasses’ throughout the year to protect their eyes and also as part of fashion. On the other hand, they are not aware of the harmful effect of blue light generated from digital devices such as computers, smartphones, and TVs. Recently, eyeglass lens manufacturers that recognized the danger of blue light developed lenses that prevent blue light and are trying to improve consumers’ awareness of it. Now they created a new word ‘blueglasses’ instead of ‘sunglasses’, trying to expand the market. Blue light refers to the light in the wavelength range between 380 and 500nm, which has the strongest energy among the wavelengths of visible light, and is a harmful ray that causes dryness and fatigue to the eyes, insomnia, stiff neck, and backache. Exposure to blue light can cause aging of visual cells or destabilization of biorhythms. However, as digital
devices are used in daily life, it is practically impossible to avoid exposure to blue light. Therefore, we need a special lens that blocks blue light selectively. The leading Korean eyeglass lens manufacturer, ChemiGlas launched Chemi BRC, which is the first blue light prevention lens in the Korean market. ‘CHEMI BRC’ was developed after long research and development by Chemi Lens R&D team of state-of-art AR coating process transparent functional lens to prevent blue light and fatigue. The quality of ‘CHEMI BRC’ has been recognized during development process, and the lens has been pre-ordered in large quantity by overseas markets including Japan. Transmittance is determined by lens transmission of light, reflection, absorption, scattering, etc. of the light, and AR coating increases it to 97%~99% NCC BLUE of Nikon lens protects eyes with the premium coating technology that added the blue light prevention to
-50-

the conventional NCC coating. In addition, without adding color to the lenses, it absorbs only 31% of blue light so that people can wear it comfortably in daily life, and improved contrast sensitivity to reduce eye fatigue. Therefore, it is great for office workers or students who use laptop, mobile phone, and other IT devices for a long time. A marketing team member of Nikon Lens explained, “Recently, an increasing number of people are complaining eye fatigue due to increasing use of IT devices. Especially, when looking at LED screen that causes a lot of glare, it is important to protect the eyes by wearing blue-light protection glasses.” The functional eyeglass lens manufacturer Opticom launched Dioblue, coated blue-light prevention lens, and rose as a star in the eyeglass lens market. Dioblue maintains 30% of blue light prevention rate while ensuring 97% or higher transmittance of visible light, and also solved the biggest problems with conventional blue light prevention lenses such as color distortion and dizziness due to ghost image reflected behind the lens. Dioblue lenses are supplied in a variety of free form designs with refractive and ultrarefractive materials. Regarding the background of launching Dioblue, Opticom explained, “Sales have been decreasing in eyeglass stores due to long economic recession, and, in each distribution stage, there is enormous and competitive price discount, which threatens the entire industry.” The company added, “Now, we need products and marketing that make customers come to us instead of waiting for them passively.” The online promotion marketing was aimed to make consumers recognized the harmful effect of blue light and think of Dioblue to increase sales. Opticom’s first step in creating a new market in the eyeglass industry is creating expansive common ground on the harm of blue light. The vertical and closed distribution and promotion structure of manufacturing-distribution-eyeglass store-consumer has limitation in creating a new market and increasing the size of the pie. To awaken potential demand of consumers, commercialize the products, and link the demands to sales increase, a new type of marketing is essential. Blueglasses that prevent blue light, which is generated from digital devices such as a computer screen, smartphone, and LED, are expected to become an essential item in the age of smart devices. Silicone Hydrogel Contact Lens Recently, a new generation of "super-permeable" contact lens that incorporates silicone inside the lens was introduced to the market, i.e. silicone hydrogel contact lens. Because of the highly oxygen permeable ability of silicone, silicone hydrogel contact lens allows much more oxygen to pass through and supplies to the eye. When eye care practitioner re-fit patient with oxygen deficiency related problems, almost magically, many of these signs or symptoms resolve quickly. You can now enjoy the benefits of wearing contact lens longer each
day without worrying the oxygen deficiency related problem. Another advantage of silicone hydrogel contact lens is less prone to dehydration while you are wearing them. For some people who wear their lenses for long days, this can mean better end-of-day comfort and reduce dryness feeling. All these advantages enhance your wearing experience and satisfied your day to day needs. 3rd Generational Silicone Hydrogel The technology used in manufacturing silicone hydrogel contact lenses represents a breakthrough over current manufacture method for traditional soft contact lenses. However, lens materials made from early generation technology are stiff and not naturally wettable. Aquaformâ Comfort Scienceä technology is the latest 3rdgeneration technology which provides high levels of oxygen transmission while minimizing dryness and maximizing comfort. Using this technology, a hydrogen bond is created between silicone and water to make the material becomes naturally wettable. Comfilcon A and enfilcon A are two examples one of the materials created by this 3rdgeneration technology. Since these two materials are inherently wettable, no surface treatment or wetting agents is required. Silicone component of both comfilcon A and enfilcon A material provide an extremely high level of oxygen permeable ability and their relatively high water content ensure the stiffness of this material remains low. Contact lens made from comfilcon A and enfilcon A material are soft, flexible and naturally wettable that guarantee comfortable lens wearing experience. Lee, Ji-Yeon

The12th Daegu International Optical Show
Ended Successfully
The12th Daegu International Optical Show (DIOPS 2013) Ended Successfully Despite the domestic and global economic recession, the 12th Daegu International Optical Show (DIOPS) finished April 19, with the amount of export consultation increasing by 4.7%. Held in April every year, DIOPS receives a lot of attention as a platform for business promotion, sales route expansion, export increase through sales channel diversification and domestic sales boost. Despite the concern for unstable North-South Korea relationship, many buyers showed up even before the official opening and the foreign buyers visiting DIOPS came from total 30 countries including China, Japan, Taiwan, France, Singapore, Hong Kong, Russia, and US Also, after DIOPS 2011, the second France national booth was formed and Dominique Pinton, the chairman of French
Eyeglass Manufacturer Association, participating in DIOPS 2013, showed positive and future-oriented view on the Korean eyeglass industry and his trust in DIOPS. Also, the refresher training for Daegu, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam branches of Korea Optometric Association was held at DIOPS and, later, the opticians visited the exhibition and consulted on product purchases, which received good response from participant companies. According to KOISC, the organizer of DIOPS, total 16,972 people visited DIOPS 2013 including 746 foreign buyers (1.71% decrease from the previous year) and 16,226 Korean buyers (2.16% increase from the previous year). The amount of export consultation was 69,423,000 USD (1.8% increase from the previous year) and export contract 25,593,000 USD (4.7%), while the domestic consultation amounted to 54.420 million KRW (1%), and contract 4,025 million KRW ( 6.2%) with a small decrease.
-60-
-NE W S-
Despite the political instability from the recent nuclear test by North Korea and global economic recession, the decrease was limited to 1.71% and many buyers still came to the exhibition to conclude or consult export. However, although the number of foreign buyers decreased a little in comparison to 2012, the visitors had real purchasing power and the total amount of export contracts increased from last year. Also, more buyers from developed countries such as the US, Australia, and France came to the exhibition, which explains the increase of contract scale and export, making DIOPS one of the top eyewear festivals in Asia. Such boost of the Korean eyewear industry is attributed to the development of manufacturing process by Korean manufacturers with new materials including the light and elastic TR90 and strong and heat-resisting Ultem, instead of the conventional acetate, according to experts. Also, the Korean Wave presumably had an effect on the positive attitude toward 'made in Korea' in other countries. A source from an eyeglass manufacturer said, “Although there was a time when Daegu was stagnating as an eyewear production mecca, but the companies took that as an opportunity to develop their own brands and new materials, which led to global competence.” He added, “New material development based on long research is leading the revival of Daegu eyewear industry.” Also, a buyer at DIOPS said, “the Korean eyewear market has great competitive power and also introduces new materials and designs each year, which is why I come every year.” In addition, to catch visitors’ interest, DIOPS installed vinyl factory, morel, oko, oxibis, grosfilley, modern optique, glance of lens, and undostrial in addition to the 10 French booths including those for Lunette de France and Silmo.
In the meeting room at EXCO, mandatory refresher training for opticians for Gyeongnam, Ulsan, and Daegu branches of KOA was provided, and the participants expressed satisfaction with the training which helped them be recognized as healthcare professionals who can be trusted by consumers. Also, in association with the Bukgu Office of Daegu, DIOPS is organizing 2013 Daegu Eyewear Festival which includes eyewear fashion show, eyeglass straw race, dance performance, eyesight competition, eye opening competition, eye health OX quiz, eyewear auction, and sweepstakes, as well as opening ceremony and eyewear star singing competition. In addition, events for opticians were organized as well, including exhibition by winners of Korea Eyewear Design competition, International Symposium, and International Optics Conference with globally recognized lecturers. The conference was popular among participants thanks to various lectures including ‘Introduction to Vision Therapy’ by Willis Clem Maple, professor of Optometry at Southwest State University and ‘Eyeglass Prescription for Customer Satisfaction’ by Noyata Dashi, director of Japan Eyeglass Eyesight Research Institute. Many of the 210 companies that participated in this year’s event showed their will to participate next year as well, which demonstrates the popularity and expectation regarding DIOPS. The participant companies, visitors, and buyers all promised the DIOPS 2014 with larger scale and more solid content. Daegu city and Bukgu promised unstinting support so that the 13th DIOPS, which will be held between April 16 (Wed) and April 18 (Fri), 2014, can be more fruitful. Moon, Seong-In

Interview with Son Jin-Young, President of Korea Optical Industry Support Center
DIOPS Becomes The Mecca Of Eyeglass Exhibition in Asia Son Jin-Young, the president of Korea Optical Industry Support Center, said the foreign buyers are coming back as the Korean eyeglass manufacturing businesses are developing new materials and products, although it is true that the industry in Daegu has shrunk over the last 10 years. Mr. Son shows determination for revival of the Korean eyeglass industry through the management and establishment of the center. We met with Mr. Son to hear about 2014 Daegu International Optical Show and the status of Korean eyeglass industry.
-How is the preparation for 2014 DIOPS going? ▲You can look forward to the Asia’s largest eyeglass business exhibition. DIOPS will continuously change, I assure you. We are working hard day and night to not only attract more buyers but also to provide more things to see. Also, the exhibition booths at EXCO are nearly sold out. -Have you attracted a lot of foreign buyers? ▲All staff at the support center are communicating with foreign buyers, through email, fax, as well as at foreign exhibitions. We are carrying out the marketing efforts for DIOPS overseas as well so that more global buyers will come to our event. Especially, we signed an MOU with the Korean Air for discount tickets for foreign buyers so that we can attract as many foreign buyers to Daegu as possible.
-Please tell us about the results of 2013 DIOPS. ▲Last year, in April, despite the political instability in the Korean peninsula and global economic recession, many buyers with high purchasing power came to DIOPS and we had a better result than the previous year. The amount of export consultation increased by 1.8% from 2012, with 69,423,000 USD and the export contracts by 4.7% with 25,593,000 USD. -What is the main area of focus in DIOPS 2014? ▲It is the variety of eyeglass frames produced in Daegu, the
mecca of eyeglass production. Currently, many companies are trying to produce and commercialize products based on new and environmentally-friendly materials. More of those products will be shown in next year’s DIOPS.
-66-
-I ntervi e w -
-Recently, Korean eyeglass frames are becoming popular again. ▲ In Moscow, Korean eyeglasses became recognized through word of mouth that they are lighter and more heatresistant than other products, as the sales have grown rapidly since 2010. Also, in Japan, Korean products are exposed in TV commercials of many eyeglass franchises, which show the remarkable quality and design.
The eyeglass export will soon reach 2 billion dollars as the remarkable quality and design of Korean eyeglasses is recognized in the world market.
-Why are Korean eyeglass frames popular? ▲ It is a result of exclusive brand and new material development. Particularly, the ultra-light new materials that have been developed after long research and development made it possible, I believe. You will notice the quality of design, lightness, and comfort when you actually wear them. -Tell us about the current status of the Korean optical industry. ▲The level of Korea’s technology in eyeglass frame, lens, and contact lens is among the top in the global market. Although there was recession due to global downturn, the export is rising again recently, which shows the infinite potential of the Korean optical industry, Given continuous technological development and consistent quality, the renaissance of Korean optical industry will return again for certain.
-How is the participation of Korean opticians? ▲We are hoping that all of the opticians registered in the Korean Optometric Association will participate, and finding different ways to support their participation through, for example, providing KTX from Seoul. Also, as usual, we will provide different trainings such as refresher training sessions. Additionally, we are planning on global scholar conference, design competition, etc., in order to provide a good opportunity for them to experience new products as well as education. It will be a venue for new experience of global trend and Korean optical industry for the opticians. -What would you like to say to the professionals in the global optical industry? ▲DIOPS can be defined as a venue of unity and coexistence. We are sure it will become the best exhibition in Asia that encompasses all optical industries around the world as well as Korea. Please send us a lot of support and interest so that we can become the mecca of eyeglass exhibition in North East Asia. Moon, Seong-In

New marketing-brand strategy,
Various forms of franchises Recently, BON DAY Family, which began eyeglass franchise business based in Busan became the talk of the town. The popularity of ‘BON DAY Family’ can be explained by the format and marketing strategy that is completely different from conventional eyeglass franchises. It is notable that they considered the fact that consumers now choose an eyeglass brand based on their taste and preferences. The brand is the typical example, because the name was based on the local dialect, which is favored by local consumers. Clearly, eyeglass franchise is becoming more popular than ever.
In 2009, a new form of eyeglass franchise appears: contact lens stores. It is seen as an attempt of the industry to create competitive power by segmenting eyeglass stores. Whether it is an independent store or shop-in-shop, contact lens stores such as Lens-Me, Lens Town, and Lens Story are contributing to sales improvement to a substantial extent. An optician who opened a shop-in-shop contact lens store said, “The customers increased by 50% as the young generation want both convenience and beauty. And the increase of customers boosted sales as well.”
When did eyeglass franchises begin in Korea? There was a small group of companies that had some form of franchises but were not real franchise business, and See Channel, founded in 1997, is considered as the first eyeglass franchise in the country. Afterwards, the first generation of eyeglass franchises including Davich, AK84, AKnara, 1001 Optics, See Channel, and Grand Prix appeared, followed by the second generation such as Mooguk, Optical Manager, Eye Tailor, Glass Story, Glass Baba, and Glass Box. -70-
-NE W S-
Eyeglass franchise companies in Korea show challenging and enterprising corporate philosophy in the market. As of late 2009, there are about 1400 eyeglass franchise stores, which is about 16% of the total 8500 eyeglass stores in Korea. Also, according to franchise business page of the Fair Trade Commission website, Davich Optical Store Chain had the highest sales among the franchises. Davich has about 150 franchisees around the country and was founded in 1986 as Hwangsil Eyeglass Store in Busan. The franchise opens about 10 stores each year despite the economic recession. The brand has been constantly making new attempts such as fixed price policy, consultation table, and café and café. The most recognized eyeglass store brand is 1001 Optics, which ranked the top in the ‘2011 Franchise Brand Recognition Survey’ by the internet newspaper E-Daily, with 16.5%, followed by Davich Optical Store Chain (14.7%). The
gap between the first and second places has been reduced and that between the second and third widened, making Davich and 1001 Optics leading brands. The third place was taken by AKnara(9.6%), followed by AK84(7.0%), and Glass Box (4.3%) was the fifth. Among the top 5 brands, Davich showed the highest brand satisfaction (63.7%) and the second place was AK84 (59.7%). The most recognized brand, 1001 Optics, showed 57.9% of satisfaction by consumers. Eyeglass franchise companies are trying to maximize customer satisfaction through the most practical franchises based on friendly image, strict protection of commercial rights, empowerment for customer satisfaction, management diagnosis system, various program developments, and marketing support. Daegu International Optical Show (DIOPS) 2014 www.diops.co.kr/eng www.facebook.com/KOREA.DIOPS
Every year, many buyers from more than 30 countries visit Korea to observe Daegu International Optical Show (DIOPS). 17,000 buyers visited Daegu last year and received feedback from more than 90% which was satisfied with it. DIOPS which connects China to Japan in Asia and at the same time globally acts as a bridgehead between the East and the West is growing in stature with each show. And it will be again held for 3 days from Apr. 16th to 18th, 2014 as it captivates buyers with innovative products. The Korean companies which participate in DIOPS are mainly companies that have gotten the good results by participating in it every year and new companies to introduce original products first. Daegu is the top fourth hub which can manufacture and supply glasses in the world. More than 700 glasses manufacturers are distributed in Korea and more than 500 companies are located in Deagu which is designated as
the special zone of glasses industry. That's why DIOPS is held in Daegu. It's the win-win opportunity for the participating companies and buyers will to promote glasses industry actively and under the auspices of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. DIOPS becomes the best place of purchase for buyers which wish to import Korean products to their countries. Korean companies were recognized as the manufacturers to produce the best quality and the product-recognition rises in other countries with increase in export. It provides opportunity to export participating companies' products to other countries for them by attracting big foreign buyers with the real purchasing power, continuing to grow the international glasses market, and utilizing the Korean Wave. As France which is the largest glasses producer in the world and has the largest brand power in it participate in Korea, the competitor

nations including Italy, China, and Japan recognized the necessity to enter the Korean market and is utilizing DIOPS to release their own companies' products. One-stop purchase support through the customized 1:1 matching program with provision of accommodations is being done for the foreign participating companies and buyers who participate in DIOPS when they ask for annual regular purchase items. As real exports of glasses frames, lenses, and sunglasses also exceed USD 600 million, they have gradually increased beginning in 2010. Many Japanese glasses companies are specially running commercials across the country to sell Korean ULTEM glasses. As 1 out of 6 of glasses in Japan is high quality Korean glasses and the rate is continuing to increase still now, it increased by 10 times as USD 45 million from USD 4.5 million in 2008. It is very meaningful in that Korean glasses satisfied Japanese particular taste and Korea is controlling the international market in Asia. Color contact lenses that boast the worldclass level with contact lenses which received FDA approval from US are fast increasing by two times every year and are dominating most of export markets in Southeast Asia. The Korean optical instruments are showing the substantial
amount of growth of 15% per year with Huvitz Co., Ltd., the No. 1 company in the international market of the automated optometric system unlike the stagnant market of the advanced countries. It's because the Korean companies have great efforts to produce customized products to meet requirements of buyers from all countries of the world as they have formed targeting at exports from the opening stage 70 years ago. The high quality of products 'made in Korea' which reject to be compared with other low-priced products have satisfied the requirements of buyers from the world with the best quality compared to prices. The Korea Optical Support Center (KOISC) which is sponsoring DIOPS is dedicated to supporting cultivating talented persons. It is finding young people with talent through the glasses design contests and is leading them to be professional designers. The place where you can meet all these things in one place is The 13th DIOPS which will be held next year. A good opportunity that you can expand your market to the world, the only exhibition in Korea which connects the East - West is waiting for you.
