shop in Myung-dong, people lined up in front of H&M shop all night to buy the 'limited edition' clothes that collaborated with a designer. The SPA brand shops such as H&M, Zara, and Forever 21 in Myung-dong and Shinsa-dong are always crowded with people. The shoppers in these SPA brand shops pick out clothes from the racks and hang them on one side of their arms while they walk around the shop as if they're bringing in the laundry. This is because of the low price. This scene is not only seen in Korea but all over the world.

20

One of the reasons that SPA brands became so successful is the speed. When other ordinary fashion brands put out new products every season, these fast fashion brands put out new products every 2 weeks. The customers can never buy the same clothes that were sold last month. These clothes are even higher in scarcity than luxury brands that they are resold with premium on some internet communities. Zara and H&M actively adopted Toyota production method, which is Just in Time method (merchandise control that puts in the arrived materials immediately into production to minimize stocks). They built a mass design system by hiring 200-300 ordinary designers instead of hiring a few star designers. Many of them are producing their products in China or India, in the low-waged countries, but having their own distribution network for production, sales, and delivery made vertical integration possible which maximized productivity and success.

Fast fashion shops gave a crushing blow to the domestic fashion industry, and Cheil Industries Inc. Korea opened up a SPA shop called 8SECONDS last year. The same phenomenon is occurring in the eyeglass frame business. It is not like Zara or H&M, which directly manufactures and distributes as in SPA method, but Korean designers are producing the products in low-waged countries such as China and selling them in Korea. They are not distributing the products to optical shops because high retail margin is needed. They're making show rooms, shops, multishops or using internet to sell the products directly to the customers. Direct distribution is also increasing customer loyalty due to active communication with the customers. One garment brand is even producing eye wears through a connection with a domestic factory. One manufacturer stated "fast fashion that boomed Korean fashion field will quickly include eye wear as one of the fashion items because customers are increasingly requesting them. Fast fashion is based on multi-kind and small-quantity production", and that "various items are produced quickly in small quantity for fast circulation". Customers can get the latest fashion eye wear at a low price, and the company can secure customers with minimized stock. One optician stated, "the sales of Korean optic shops were hit by the fashion SPA brands as fast fashion eyeglass frames came in", and that "the opticians need to show that they are different from garment shops by focusing on the health of customers' eyes and eye checkups". Things possible in SF movies Google 'Pr oject gl a ss' creates a great sensation

Y

ou can send messages, check schedule, weather, location, navigation, and many other various features through the glasses you're wearing. Things that were only possible in SF movies are actually happening in real life. Last year, Google surprised the world with their test product image of wearable smart glasses called 'Project glass' that are being developed. Google uploaded a video on the 'Project glass' page of Google Plus website, and showed that the rumor on Google making a new concept of eyeglasses that connects online world with the real life is true. According to the video uploaded by Google X, the secret project team of Google, which was found by New York Times last year, these eyeglasses can be connected to the internet and so the weather forecast or messages from friends can be checked right away, and smart phones are not needed. When a message pops

36

up, the eyeglass wearer can reply by speaking through the microphone which will transform the voice message into a text message. When you go into a subway station, 'operation delayed' message pops up automatically, and directions will show to let you walk to the destination. Micro camera and display are loaded to show directions to the destination, and the scene that you're looking at can be shared with your friends in real time. This Project glass revealed by Google has a simple design. The semitransparent video screen on the right side of the eye becomes the screen. It provides 14 functions including weather forecast, location information, and schedule management. Google X, the project team that developed this special glass, wrote "technology needs to be there when you need it, and it needs to stand aside when you don't need it. Project glass began to actualize this technology" on the bulletin board. They added, "We made this video to show you what you can do with this technology".

H

owever, Google emphasized that "A part of information was opened to public to get advices from reviewers", and that different glasses will be sold in the market. The glasses that were introduced by Google were a development prototype, and the detailed data is being kept confidential. Google is known to be developing 10 different prototypes. There are prototypes for eyeglass wearers, and those types are attachable on regular eyeglasses for the people with bad eyesight. The video on the glasses by Google X project can be easily found on Google Plus, YouTube, and various other video streaming sites. Microsoft also revealed their road-map on smart glasses. Smart glasses by Microsoft are being developed for indoor use, compared to Google smart glasses. The Verge, an ITspecialized mass media, reported a product that can be linked with the next-generation console game player 'X Box 720', and movement recognizing game controller 'Kinect' based on the leaked internal papers of MS. Augmented reality glasses development project by MS that is being processed with the code name 'Fortaleza' is planned to release indoor product that uses Wi-Fi by 2014. This seems to be a part of N Screen strategy, which is the cloud service that embraces X Box and its external devices, and Smart glass that is planned to be released operates without TV but shows the game in the form of augmented reality, which works by linking with Kinect, the movement recognizing game controller of X Box, the game console. For example, players can enjoy game as if the enemies in the game are actually appearing in their living room to fight with them. From 2015, they're planning on supporting Fortaleza with 4G wireless communication network so t hat it can be used outdoors like Google Smart glasses. However, The Verge viewed that "4G Fortaleza is not expected to work as an independent mobile device, it may need to be linked with X Box console or set-up box that are installed inside the shops". Parties in the eyeglasses business stated, "it seems to us that IT industry is using eyeglasses to provide live visual information using 3D technologies", and that "this newly created market needs to be made even bigger by combining with eyeglasses-related fields of business."

OVIUS will be proudly marching to the world in 2013 Interview with Myeong, Tae-sik, The director of Daejeon Lens RIS Project OVIUS Company It has been a year since Myeong, Tae-sik, the director of Daejeon Lens Regional Innovation System Project (Daejeon Lens RIS Project), OVIUS Company, actively founded OVIUS branches in some main foreign countries in the world. Recently, Director Myeong won a contract with World Union Vision and is now looking forward to seeing OVIUS improve its reputation even more than before in the foreign market. Director Myeong said that he is very much eager to have his company, OVIUS, occupy its position more strongly both in Korea and the international market with the high-quality OVIUS lens. We visited Director Myeong in Daejeon Lens RIS Project to learn about his New Year’s resolutions.

Tell us about Daejeon Lens RIS Project. In 2005, Korea Optical Industry conducted a research on the actual condition in the optical business in Korea, and that was how Daejeon Lens RIS Project was began. A year later, in 2006, a cluster of Deajeon-Chungcheong eyeglasses lens manufacturers was established. Since then, Daejeon Lens RIS Project has been cooperating with an academicindustrial cooperation center in Hanbat National University, Daejeon Techno Park and Korea Basic Science Institute in order to develop the eyeglasses lens business, the long-time representative business in Daejeon area. We were all so in need of power for development of the Daejeon eyeglasses lens business and finally, we could begin the eyeglasses lens business project with a support from the Ministry of Knowledge Economy.

44

How is the business going with OVIUS? As of now, OVIUS is supplying products to more than 500 optical shops in Korea. We have three branches in preparation in foreign countries. Daejeon Lens RIS is working on the two stage in two year project. The products by Daejeon Lens RIS Project are being recognized in the eyeglasses market as they were selected to be the best quality product in a most specialized local products exhibition. Even before it received the high compliment in the exhibition, OVIUS was putting efforts into its brand marketing and, as I just mentioned, the result turned out to be the satisfactory evaluation in the exhibition. Daejeon Lens RIS Project will keep working on any support projects to help the company so that OVIUS can win fame in the world’s market as Korea’s leading brand.

First, It is Comfortable. Second, It is Safe. Third, It is Lightweight. We heard that you have opened a showroom in China. Since the last year, we, Daejeon Lens RIS Project, have been concentrating on expanding our business into the overseas market by opening branches in foreign countries. We decided to go for a tryout in China first and, early last year, we successfully won a contract with World Union Vision, a rapidly growing power in China. World Union Vision is a huge group of eyeglasses companies which is handling every field of the optical industry in China ranging from building a distribution/marketing industrial complex to producing high value eyeglasses-related items. OVIUS considers it an honor to work with such association in China and is looking forward to conducting profitable distribution and marketing in the Chinese market. Not only that, in collaboration with a Chinese academic-industrial cooperation center, Daejeon Lens RIS Project built a permanent showroom in Dangshan, China. That is now working favorably for OVIUS to hold its place as a luxurious high value brand in the Chinese market. What does this entering the Chinese market mean to OVIUS? When we first established the showroom in Dangshan, China, we would have not simply wanted to make our footprints in the market. We were looking for something more than that, which was to introduce the excellent technology of a Korean company to a foreign market. Through this permanent showroom in Dangshan, OVIUS is actively proceeding with marketing in China as it is working very closely with the local staff and World Union Vision. Add to this, we just finished OVIUS Chinese brand renewal and are about to release the brand to the market. What makes products of ‘OVIUS’ so special? We pursue the best quality in the world. Daejeon Lens RIS Project has been conducting a variety of businesses in order to increase our competitiveness with other local eyeglasses lens companies. Among those businesses, we were particularly into developing and commercializing technology and as a result of that, we now have OVIUS of the best quality. Could you give more specific descriptions on OVIUS products? First of all, we have spare lenses. We have three kinds of spare lenses which are 50, 60 and 70 and they have been specialized to be medium-refractive, high-refractive and super high-refractive. For the monomer of those lenses, we use CR-39, MR-8 and IU-K700 and they were all proved for safety and excellence. Every coating that eyeglasses lenses could have has been applied to OVIUS. You will find hard coating, multi-coating, super waterrepellent coating and primer coating used for OVIUS. We

have created the most remarkable OVIUS as we worked out durability and shock resistance of the conventional OVIUS. We are especially proud of OVIUS 70 Lens, a super high-refractive lens, because no other eyeglasses lens companies would have a skill to produce such lens. Even in the whole world, only three manufacturers are making the lens. OVIUS 70 is certainly the finest lens on earth which is loved by optical shops and customers for its excellence, price and usability.

What is OVIUS RX Lens? As a new item in 2012, OVIUS RX Lens has been designed to deal with high myopia and excessive astigmatism which are considered beyond the power area of the spare lenses. For OVIUS RX Lens, we have progressive multifocal lens, freeform lens and functional transition lens to help our customers to wear eyeglasses depending on their visual acuity. You can regard OVIUS RX Lens as a customized lens and for this lens; we have applied basic monomer of 50, 60 and 70 lens to progressive multifocal lens and freeformprocessed lens which has been optimized to individual visual acuity. OVIUS RX Lens are selling in many optical shops and a discoloring lens, OVIUS transition lens of 50 (the mediumrefractive) and 60 (the high-refractive) is also a regular seller in the shops. We make sure that every product of ours increases our fame in the market and in reality; people are highly satisfied with the OVIUS products. Is there any chance for us to see 'OVIUS' in a foreign country? At present, OVIUS is working hard to enter an overseas market through several channels. What we believe the most importantly here is that we should sell OVIUS as OVIUS itself anywhere in the world. We already applied for a trademark in the foreign market. It is obvious that we are this close to obtaining visible results from the international market because we are working just perfectly with some countries in our target. OVIUS will form a new high-end eyeglasses lens market in the overseas market as stirring a boom in the industry. Could you share your resolutions for 2013? In the new year, not only will Daejeon Lens RIS Project prepare a new project for development of the eyeglasses lens industry but also it works on OVIUS distribution system in Korea even harder so that it can be a contribution to OVIUS in its entering the overseas market. While promoting the new business project, Daejeon Lens RIS Project expects that it can constantly support the company with R&D business. In 2013, you will surely see the OVIUS high-class eyeglasses lens proudly competing with overseas products as the best eyeglasses lens in Korea. Kang, Min-Gu / Jo, Sung-Hak

Wearing progressive multifocal lens

by the state of things

A

ccording to the 'statistics of the aged in 2012' by the National Statistical Office, people in the age of 65 or higher take up 11.8% of the entire population in 2012, and the number is expected to be 24.3% in 2030, and 37.4% in 2050. Aged population is sharply increasing, and managing the senile disorders such as presbyopia or cataract became important. Recently, people are getting presbyopia at earlier age, and progressive multifocal lenses are favored over reading glasses, because they look like regular eye glasses. For rapidly increasing aged population, let's take a look at the tips on 'how to purchase and adapt to progressive multifocal lens' for beginners.

48

We a r i n g p r o g r e s s i v e m u l t i f o c a l l e n s e s f o r different situations is effective in keeping the eyes healthy. Recently, functional progressive multifocal lenses rather than regular progressive multifocal lenses are getting good responses from the customers. The customers with presbyopia, who had difficulties in close-range work, are visiting optical shops for eye checkups and consultation to purchase progressive multifocal lenses. It is very important to choose 'the perfect lens for me' when purchasing progressive multifocal lens. Each customer needs to choose and wear functional progressive multifocal lens according to one's occupation, personal taste, and lifestyle.

For example, indoor digital multifocal lens would be suitable for the office workers who spend most of the time indoors, giving presentations and attending meetings. For the ones who have a lot of deskwork, choosing the lens for deskwork would be suitable. Wearing the suitable progressive multifocal lenses according to each person's characteristics can keep the eyes healthy with clear vision. The time needed for eyeglass lens adaptation differs in each person. It is normal for the customers to get confused when they put on the progressive multifocal lenses for the first time. This is because progressive multifocal lens has gradually distributing spectacles degrees in one lens, which not only corrects presbyopia but also enables the wearer to see the things in a close and far distance all at once. Therefore, adaptation time is needed for the people who wear progressive multifocal lenses for the first time. Adaptation time can be a few hours to 2 weeks depending on the person, and it is better to keep the glasses on long enough to get used to them rather than regularly switching them with the old glasses.

'How to purchase and adapt to progressive multifocal lens for beginners' The advantage of progressive multifocal lens is that the wearer can go back to his old life as soon as he adapts to the eyeglasses, and can see the things in close distance clearly, which was not possible before due to presbyopia. When looking down or sideways, the head needs to move together with the eyes. With progressive multifocal lens, the wearer needs to look through the lower part of the lens when looking at something in a close distance. Therefore, it is important to practice moving the head and the eyes together when looking down for walking down the stairs or looking sideways. Kwon, Kee-Hyuk

As a result, during only a brief period of time, its own brands - EYELUCY, TRISHA, TYPICA, BENFIX, and TWISTER - are gaining popularity not just in Korea, but in China, Thailand, Singapore and other Asian countries, showing increasing each quarter.

BENFIX represents gentleness. With easy softness and comfortable feeling, BENIX ensures warmth and mildness to both people who wear it or watch it. TWISTER is in the swirls of sensation. Professional spectacle designers and dress designers work together at a design center to create not a product but a work of art. Collaboration projects with young and creative artist designers are in the pipeline as well. The Company diversified its channels to communicate with more clients. As part of this effort, it has held parties jointly with clubs from late last year. Early this year, too, we organized a party at a club in Gangnam, Seoul, where people came and enjoy and got a lot of presents for free of charge. The party was very successful and we plan for more such events at clubs or with online groups in 2013 as well to come closer to people. Before product design or such marketing campaigns, the Company ensured its factories were equipped with the full set of requirements including ISO9001 certification or 1004 standards. DASA Communication is preparing for market research and exhibition participation in 2013 to expand its export to more Asian countries, Europe, South America and India. We will not be in a hurry but aggressive in pursuing marketing. With the pride of the made-in-Korea goods, the Company is ready to march into the world.

"No worries about the dry eye syndrome"

D

ry weather and usage of smartphones are now causing ‘dry eye syndrome.’ When people watch a screen of the smartphone, they hardly blink the eyes and that causes dry eye syndrome. Dry eye syndrome makes thicker cornea and conjunctiva due to tearless eyes. A person in the relevant field recommends that we should keep surroundings humid to prevent dry eye syndrome. He also suggests that we control humidity with a humidifier and that it would be good if we blink eyes at least deliberately. According to his advice, consuming cassia seed tea and green vegetables are also good for eyes. He also suggested to look away from time to time during working hours and to massage the eye area with hands. Typically, the soft contact lens covers the whole surface of the eyeball and that interfere the tear development which would, in return, cause dry eye syndrome. Hence, lens-users need to handle the lenses with attention by washing them thoroughly. They also should choose lenses that will cause minimum irritation to the eyes. For that reason, silicon hydro-gel lenses are gaining popularity from the lens-users and because of that, a lot of the lens-users have been showing a great interest in multi-purpose sterilizing solutions for lenses which would help them with eye care.

56

CIBAVISION Korea Co., Ltd. (Managing Director Chu Kyeong-eui) says that as low water content, siliconhydro gel lens, Air-optics Family prevents dehydration on the eyeballs as much as possible which would decrease a chance for people to get dry eye syndrome. In addition, the newly added damp factor provides gentle wear-ability when a user wears lenses. Not only that, in case of Air-optics Family, it lowers the angle between the solid surface and liquid surface as Airoptics Family has been processed with the surface plasma finishing. In other words, Air-optics Family would not interrupt tears with spreading over the lenses but would prevent the surface from being dried up.

Alcon Korea Co., Ltd. (CEO Jeong Koo-wan) has recently released ‘Opti-free Pure Moist’ to the market. What is so special about this product is that it will keep the lenses as dewy as possible from the moment a user wears the lenses until he/she takes them off. The solutions will work fine with every contact lens and people will find it easy to wash their lenses with ‘Optifree Pure Moist.’ Particularly, with hydra-glide moisture matrix working right on the surface of the lens, you will feel the lenses moist all day long. Other than this matrix, two sterilizing substances as Polyquad and Aldox wash out germs with no hassle and edetate disodium would work for prevention of calcium precipitate. The collaboration between Polyquad, Aldox and edetate sodium soothes the surface of the lenses and improve the wear-ability. Alcon Korea Co., Ltd. conducted a research on Optifree Pure Moist targeting people who would wear lenses for more than 16 hours a day. According to the results, after a month with Opti-free Pure Moist, 75% of those people in the research said that ‘they feel their eyes more comfortable all day long’ while in another research after two months with the solutions, 72% provided the same answer. Three months later with Opti-free Pure Moist, 86% of the people said that their eyes felt dewy even though they wore the lenses throughout a day. A person from the company said that Opti-free Pure Moist conducts sterilizing power which is considered even stronger than standard sterilizing power by Food and Drug Administration and International Standard Organization. He also added that the solutions will be suitable for those who would wear lenses for long or who would feel inconvenient about wearing the lenses.

BAUSCH & LOMB Korea Co., Ltd. (CEO Kim Hyeong-jun) has introduced a multi-purpose lens sterilizing solutions, ‘Bio-true’, which was developed based on human engineering. As a product with natural lubricant, hyaluronic acid, applied, Bio-true keeps the eyes moist while it improves the wear-ability of lenses. This solution of Ph 7.5 works like natural tears and your eyes will feel comfortable for long period of time. The main concept of Bio-true is to make the eyes with lenses feel like eyes without lenses. For that, the product has been produced in consideration of a fact that a human’s tear is consisted of more than 400 proteins. From there, the solutions have been designed to activate natural proteins such as lysozyme for healthy eyes. A person from BAUSCH & LOMB Korea Co., Ltd. is proud to introduce Bio-true and says, “For Bio-true, we have put various human engineering substances as natural lubricants, like hyaluronic acid as well as PH which is similar to that of tears, so that we could meet needs of consumers. Such natural lubricants in the solutions help the lens-users wear contact lenses as comfortable as possible.” Lee, Ji-Yeon

Dr. Chu, Byoung-Sun

THE

market share of daily disposable contact lenses has grown gradually in the contact lens market. According to a study, a research found that the market share rose by 27% in 2011 compared to 2010. Daily disposable daily disposable lenses account for 26% of the entire sales of contact lenses, solidifying the trend of its market share expansion. Many experts expect even faster growth in sales of daily disposable lenses but in fact, it is not very easy to recommend customers to buy them in the frontline sales business. That is, there is some concern that the talk of such lens prices could work as a sales pressure on to customers. For this reason, sales people may hesitate to recommend daily disposable contact lenses for customers. Daily disposable contact lenses have benefits for both contact lens selling optometrists and customers trying to buy them. For the customers, first, as they change lenses everyday to new ones, they enjoy convenience and cleanliness. Plus, they do not need extra lens care solutions, etc. to cleanse or keep lenses safely. Since they wear fresh lenses every day, complications related to solution use or deposit build-up on contact lenses become non-issues. In general, the material or thickness of daily disposable lenses is softer and thinner than the existing 2-week or one-month disposable contacts. So consumers feel more comfortable wearing them. Price-wise, the cost of wearing daily disposable lenses for 2 weeks is similar to or slightly less than wearing 2-week disposable contacts and buying lens care solutions. Additionally, for optometrists who sell daily disposable contact lenses, they do not have to instruct customers how to manage lenses and can feel assured that contact lens complications or side effects may be reduced by the simpler care regimen. On the side of optical shops, in case of a customer who used to wear 2-week disposable contacts and changed to daily disposable lenses, the shops can receive more payment as lens prices are higher but they are paid nothing for lens solutions. If the customer buys lens solutions not from optical shops but from other places such as super supermarkets, daily disposable contact lens sales can in fact be more profitable for the shops. Of course, if a customer purchases lens solutions together with lenses, the total amount should be compared with the daily disposable contact lens expenses. But most customers buy solutions whenever necessary regardless of their lens purchase. If they go to large supermarkets for the solutions, they mostly buy solutions and other products too. So they usually do not remember the specific cost of lens solutions.

60

Cornea toxicity response to lens solutions

A lot of optometrists agree that daily disposable lenses are easy and convenient tools to correct one’s eyesight but due to their perceived greater expense, optometrists tend to hesitate to advise consumers to use such lenses. Many consumers, however, also feel that having daily disposable contact lenses would be more convenient and comfortable so a recommendation would be confirming what a consumer may already feel. In this situation, what matters is how optometrists approach recommending the lens. So here are several pearls of advice which may enhance sales of daily disposable lenses.

convenience in use, customers will fully recognize the advantages of daily disposable contact lenses.

Explain benefits of using new and clean lenses every day. Using fresh and clean lenses every day means the lens itself is free of any antigen that can cause allergies. This is especially significant for any consumer with allergies. Allergies caused by lens solutions are also common. They make wearing lenses uncomfortable and reduce lens-wearing hours. Daily disposable contact lenses need no other lens solutions, precluding the possibility of lens solution-caused side effects. Daily disposable lens wearers are actually reported to follow the recommended cycle of lens change much better than 2-week or 1-month contact wearers, indicating lower risk of lens-caused infections or diseases by that much.

Consider personal conditions. When making a prescription about contact lens, it is essential to consider the corresponding customer’s personal environment to give lenses of optimal choice. In this process, optometrists also should inform customers about various kinds of lenses appropriate for different conditions along with their strong and weak points and teach them how to use these lenses according to their pros and cons. If a customer, for instance, plans for a long trip, has an allergy, works in a very dry condition or wears lenses only during playing sports, optometrists should recommend appropriate lenses for each situation. And in doing so, daily disposable lenses may be an appropriate option to suggest.

Explain about the cost. As mentioned before, it is hard to make a simple comparison of cost for daily disposable and 2-week or longer disposable contacts. However, if the cost of contact lens solutions are also factored in and the time taken to care for non daily disposable contact lenses, then the price difference is not so great. Although initial cost of purchase of daily disposable lenses is higher but in the context of years and

Give lenses free for sample test. If a customer who uses 2-week disposable or longer visits the shop, give him or her daily disposable samples so that the person can wear it by himself and feel how they are. Since such a customer may have never experienced daily disposable contact lenses before, so are unaware of the difference. By giving free test lenses, we can also give them an opportunity to feel the difference themselves and gain more convenient experience.

Roles of optometrists Optometrists play an important role in correcting and improving customers’ eyesight and present them with the most appropriate solution among many different options. In this sense, optometrists are expected to advise customers more proactively to help them make a good choice in prescribing contact lenses which provide maximum benefits, rather than leave them less advised and to make their own choices with little information.

France Essilo is the number one company in the field of optics which has the history of 160 years. It is one of the companies that try to present comfortable vision and life to the customers through the best optical instrument and eyeglass lens. Business collaboration between France Essilo and Japan Topcon has become a big issue as they launched an optical instrument.

history of Korean optical instrument goes over 40 years. From lens edger that cuts eyeglass lenses to the recent state-of-the-art refkeratometer, the manufacturers of optical instrument put in sincere effort in the business. Their endeavor for the development in Korean optical instrument industry stands unrivalled with any other industry. Knocking on overseas markets, building brand awareness, and ranking with global companies such as Topcon and Nidek in Japan were all possible because of the hard work by the leading companies.

66

As Essilo distributes refkeratometers and most of the products produced by Topcon in the name of Essilo brand, and Topcon distribute lens edger by Essilo through business collaboration, the ripple effect in the optical instrument market is expected to be great. This business collaboration between the two companies can be a forewarning flare for a new reorganization in the optical instrument market. Meanwhile, Huvitz made a contract for business collaboration with KOWA Group Japan last September, targeting the Japanese market. The contracting parties of Huvitz stated, "this business collaboration will distribute 16 types of optical instruments in the Japanese market", and then added "shortly, we will give shape to the joint development of ophthalmic medical instruments and marketing activities using the overseas subsidiary companies of KOWA Group". Through the business collaboration with KOWA Group, Huvitz secured the service network and sales in the Japanese market for aggressive business activities and the synergic effects of technology and marketing of the two companies will increase the market share and awareness. A successful Japanese market advance is expected, and this would be the stepping-stone for the companies to become global. KOWA Group Japan is a middle-grade company that had sales of 2 trillion won in 2011. The company consists of a trading part which is in charge of textile, machine, and shipping, and a manufacturing part that leads LED lighting device and ophthalmic medical instrument business. Huvitz has 85% of its 2011 standard sales in exportation, and is evaluated as a small giant for never reporting a single drop in sales or quarter loss for 14 years after its foundation. the biggest optical exhibit show throughout Asia and a world’s growing optical business show, DIOPS 2013 will be held for three days from April 17 to April 19 in 2013 at EXCO, Daegu. According to the public release by the executive office of DIOPS, the international optical exhibition will be held in Sankeyok 2-dong, Bukgu, Daegu with a support from Korea Optical Industry Support Center and Korean Optometric Association. DIOPS added that it is looking forward to seeing the show crowded by optical companies in Korea and other countries. It has been already 12 years since the opening of the first international optical exhibition. During the show, members of Korean Optometric Association will be provided with refresher training. A great number of overseas buyers have sent a positive response to the invitation of the show. For this international optical exhibit show, the executive office of DIOPS is expecting increase both in export and domestic demands as DIOPS works hard to draw attention from overseas buyers. The show will be a chance for optical companies in Korea to introduce themselves to the foreign markets as they expand the market area by making many new connections in the business. For that reason, the executive office of DIOPS is doing its utmost to invite buyers with big purchasing power including other buyers in the new markets. What is special about DIOPS 2013 is that it is planning various programs not only for overseas buyers or domestic/foreign participants but also for ordinary visitors. Ground breaking products with IT applied to eyeglasses will be displayed at the show while all the participants are led to the trend in the optical industry as they admire optical items ranging from eyeglasses frames, sunglasses, eyeglasses lenses, contact lenses to optical instrument. The participants will soon realize the great scale of this exhibit show. Son, Jin-young, the Director of Korea Optical Industry Support Center said that he is proud to see how DIOPS is still growing while other overseas optical exhibit shows are downsizing in the midst of the global economic recession. He also strongly pointed out that it is high time for the optical industry to take a leap again into the overseas market and that we are in desperate need of ‘a total business center’ which would be consisted of eyeglasses frame manufacturing machines, local optical products

and material·design institutes. Meanwhile, in DIOPS 2012, Korea Optical Industry Support Center introduced its test product which had been developed from the second-year research and development project. People in the optical industry were very much enthusiastic about the product. For this test product, Korea Optical Industry Support Center worked on human bodyfriendly plasticizer (PEG) rather than Phthalate (an environmental hormone which would have a negative cause to reproductive rate of humans) which is used for a cellulose acetate board as a plasticizer. As a result, the test product by Korea Optical Industry Support Center was observed to have physical properties which are as similar as or even better than those of current exported GA board. With this new, differentiated ecofriendly CA board for eyeglasses frames, Korea Optical Industry Support Center came up with a new biomass celluloid-based eyeglasses frame manufacturing skill. Not only that, during DIOPS 2012‘the first overseas recruitment project’was conducted. A total of 49 colleges with Optical Science participated to promote their students to the companies in the business. That worked as a chance for job seekers to try out for the companies in the field of their major. Jo, Sung-Hak

Son, Jin-young, Director of Korea Optical Industry Support Center

Eyeglasses in the world all starts from Daegu Description of the photograph Son, Jin-young, Director of Korea Optical Industry Support Center, is giving a presentation on DIOPS to buyers in an international exhibition as showing a video clip of ‘Gangnam Style.’ "What we mainly focused on about a poster of ‘2013 Daegu International Optical Show (DIOPS)’ was to make the poster present characteristics of Koreanmade eyeglasses clearly enough at a time. We are confident that we have made the successful poster that would emphasize the lightness, wearability and high-quality of the eyeglasses made in Korea.“ With ‘2013 DIPOS Poster as a starter, Son Jin-young, Director of Korea Optical Industry Support Center, dashed into DIOPS public relations exercise. The international optical exhibition show is something to be definitely required in a country

80

where the optical manufacturing business has been revitalized. In countries such as Italy and Japan which are ruling over the world’s optical market, people in the optical industry would willingly join the international optical exhibition show.DIOPS which has been held every year is fortunately getting settled as drive in the Korea optical industry. With constant participation of foreign buyers in DIOPS, the awareness of the show has been greatly increased. For example, some overseas buyers in 2012 DIOPS said that they were happy as learning a lot about the Korea optical industry and admiring new items at the same time. They expressed great satisfaction with the show.

“In Moscow, people have already fallen in love with the lightness and heat-resistance of Koreanmade eyeglasses. The high-quality of the Korean eyeglasses is now having a very much positive influence on its eyeglasses export to Moscow.” said Director Son. 10 years ago, the Korean eyeglasses exportation to Moscow was once thriving but until now, the figure has been dropped for several years as Korea lost ground to China. However, from 2010, the export figure sharply got back on the track and in 2011, the export grew 77.3% from a year earlier, which is found to be quite surprising. The fame of the Korean-made eyeglasses is being proved well even in commercials on Japanese public TV network. A total of five companies such as Megane Top Co., Ltd. in Japan released TV commercials of Korean eyeglasses. In the commercial, characteristics and consumer prices of the Korean eyeglasses were exposed and the price, introduced to be about 200,000 KRW, has worked as a proof for the high quality and excellent function of the eyeglasses made in Korea. At present, it is observed that people prefer those eyeglasses which would get along with their eye shapes and body type to those made by famous brands.

Director Son also confidently added that the Korea optical industry will enter its second Renaissance if it succeeds in developing glasses frames and lenses as meeting new demands of people nowadays.Director Son said that Korea optical industry is overcoming difficulties caused by the world’s economic recession by working on its long-time infrastructure and exceptional technical skills. Lastly, the director left a message for those in the Korea optical industry that they should cleverly surmount the difficulty with the hope and visions for tomorrow. Kang, Min-Gu

World-recognized

accessory contact lens case

F

rom the early 2000, contact lens users are rapidly increasing. Cosmetic lens market is also growing rapidly. There are several items that are essentially needed when contact lenses are purchased; a lens case for storing the lenses and cleansing agents for cleani ng the lenses. However, people thought that the lens case was a giveaway when the lenses were purchased. It is still early to say that these accessory items are perfectly charged, but they're becoming a new model for profit creation. There is a company that led in making these accessory items paid for. Korea Miotica Co. is the company that sold contact lens case. Korea Miotica recently made a contract with Walt Disney on the license for using all of the characters and released contact lens cases and cleansers. The company is planning its second jump.

84

Miotica developed over 40 different items including round steel compact case, 3D character case 'Disney pool' which is used the technology of IPOOL auto vibrating cleaner with Walt Disney product, Mickey, Mini, Donald Duck, and Daisy were expressed in 3D. IPOOL achieved recognition for removing 99% of deposited protein in 3 minutes, which the cleaning power was requested by the department of Optical Science at Eulji University. IPOOL continued to develop, decreasing vibration and noise, equipped partition wall and drainage functions to prevent cleansing water from getting inside and corrosion of key parts such as of motor and ground parts.

M

oreover, the cumulated know-how and details are well shown in this product through characterizing various contact lens cases. For the low-priced contact lens cases that were painted, the paint can get on the hands when cleaning the lens with the cleansing solution that contains NaCl. Considering the possibility of foreign substance getting into the eyes, these lens cases were manufactured with paint-free, non-adhesive parts. One example can be Walt Disney's Goofy case, which was made with 12 separate molds to assemble the parts to make one product. For steel cases, sliding type was adopted, but the fact that many customers only look into the mirrors was not ignored. They didn't miss out the details on stopping the sliding to show the mirror. Miotica Korea showed new products at Beijing Optics Exhibition last year, and received numerous love calls from China and Japan. They already have plans to enter Disney Land and Disney shops in Japan. However, their production is not catching up with the demands, and they're squealing with delight. Together with this, they're preparing commercialization of the characters in 'Monster University' and 'Finding Nemo 3D' by Pixar before the movies come out in order to dominate the market in advance. Miotica stated, "Miotica Korea will keep on developing through various marketing including R&D on continued product design and quality, customer communication through SNS including Facebook, Tweeter, and Kakao Talk and contents development using the characters, which will all generate revenue in optic shops.", showing a high ambition.
