Starting with and inspired by the book „Apple: Learning to Design, Designing to Learn“ written by japanese designer Ken Miki, we analyzed, rather de-designed a simple everyday product, the Wiener Zuckerl, which actually – as we found out –has its origin in Graz. Two sessions and some time in between fpr analogue and digital research have given new inspiration, insights, discoveries and additional perspectives. Martin Foessleitner FH-Joanneum 2018

A sugar battery is an enzymatic biofuel cell that uses a maltodextrin solution as a fuel to directly generate electricity. In 2014, researchers at Virginia Tech published their research on a new kind of glucose fueled fuel cell that improves efficiency over previous cells, resulting in a total energy density closely competing with lithium-ion batteries.[1] The new cell have a potential energy density of 596 Ah kg−1, which is higher than lithium-ion batteries. If these fuel cells are proven, they could be used as soon as three years from now.[2] These fuel cells can be used to power a cell phone for ten days, unlike the current lithium-ion batteries that can only be used for one day

The “Wiener Zuckerl are a traditional candy from Austria. The company was founded 1891 in Vienna. They have six variants of taste: Marille, Strawberry, Lemon, Orange, Pineapple, Raspberry. It is a colorful, fruity marmalade, wrapped in a coat of solid sugar.
When the Wiener Zuckerl are cut in half, it’s possible to see the marmalade. Using a smartphone camera, a flashlight and some paper as a diffusor, we tried to capture the colors of the Zuckerl perfectly.
We liked the first results. For better pictures we went ahead, and used a high quality camera and a loupe, to get a close up of the structure of the Zuckerl. Seeing the Zuckerln through the circular lense with a black surroundings, they reminded us of a distant planet.
In physics and optics, the Fraunhofer lines are a set of spectral lines named after the German physicist Joseph von Fraunhofer (1787–1826). The lines were originally observed as dark features (absorption lines) in the optical spectrum of the Sun. We defined a color spectrum for the Universe of taste. Every taste has it’s own unique color spectrum.

ZUCKERL AS A UNIT
– the sweet unit of measurement –
There are two main approaches to measurement systems. All modern units are tied up with constants such as the length of the Earth latitude or time of one planet‘s spin. But in ancient Greece or even in pre-industrial Europe people were using everyday objects or common knowledge to define area, weight or distance. For example, in Dutch units or measurement, the Hollandse mijl (the Dutch mile) was „an hour‘s walk“. It‘s quite common to use „foot“ as a unit concerning measurement as well. Wiener Zuckerl is a common knowledge thing that easily recognizable across Austria. It could surely become the new unit of weight. In some way, it‘s even better then grams. When gram is an abstract value that hard to imagine or relate, one zuckerl feasible and understandable unit. Also, it helps kids to understand the idea of measurement.

OPENING Some of the most important units of measurements are confusing and illogical.
CONFLICT Up to now the units of measurements aren’t provable. The question arises why we should trust and rely on them.
CLIMAX Wiener Zuckerl – the traditional standard unit of measurement as the trustable unit of measurement is introduced to the world.
THE END The goal is to measure the world in the new Wiener Zuckerl – the sweet new unit of measurements.
ZUCKERL TIME – Zt –
DAY IN ZUCKERL A day, a unit of time, is approximately the period of time during which the Earth completes one rotation with respect to the Sun (solar day). At the one hand one day defines the time between sunrise and sunset. On the other hand it’s used for the total of one day and one night. The word day may also refer to a day of the week or to a calendar date.
DEFINITION OF ZUCKERL TIME We used the average leaking duration to define our developed time unit Zuckerl time or Zt. So a full day would be 240 Zuckerl.
UNITS OF TIME A day can be defined by the sun passing through the local meridian, which happens at local noon (upper culmination) or midnight (lower culmination). The exact moment is dependent on the geographical longitude, and to a lesser extent on the time of the year. The length of such a day is nearly constant, so they took an average value to determine a day. The unit of measurement "day", was redefined as 86 400 SI seconds and symbolized d. In 1967, the second and so the day were redefined by atomic electron transition. A civil day is usually 86 400 seconds, plus or minus a possible leap second in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). A day is commonly divided into 24 hours of 60 minutes, with each minute composed of 60 seconds.
INTERESTING FACT ABOUT ZUCKERL TIME Pavlo needs exactly 1 Zt from leaving home to the FH.
ZUCKERL WEIGHT – Zw –
ZUCKERL WEIGHT. Austrians loves to eat Wiener Zuckerl, so it is logical to meassure their bodyweight in Wiener Zuckerl. The unit for the weight is called Zw (Zuckerl Weight). An average Austrian man weights 15905,66 Zw (15,9 kZw) and a woman 12679,24 Zw (12,679 kZw).
Everyone knows the weight of a person and the weight of a Wiener Zuckerl. There are no doubts by guessing the weight of things anymore. You only have to remember the weight of one Wiener Zucker or a whole bag in your hand, and multiply it. An iPhone for example, has an weight of 26Zw. So it is much lighter as a whole bag of Wiener Zucker, which has a weight of 33 Zw. 1 Zw 1000 Zw = 1 kZw 1 average Austrian man = 15905,66 Zw 1 average Austrian woman = 12679,24 Zw
ZUCKERL LENGTH – Zl –
ZUCKERL LENGTH The span of one Wiener Zuckerl sets the scale of all measurements concerning length. The length of exactly 1 Wiener Zuckerl is called 1 Zuckerl Length = 1 Zl. This measured length serves for further mathematical calculations concerning routes,
Schรถckl = 48.166 Zl Groร glockner = 126.600 Zl Kilimanjaro = 179.840 Zl Mount Everest = 294.933 Zl Erde =12523437500 Zl Dani = 60 Zl Johanna = 56 Zl Katharina = 54 Zl Pavlo = 62 Zl

Deconstruction In a field test, it was discovered that the Wiener Zuckerl can be minimized into its pieces without losing any of its taste. Furthermore, the individual pieces may be merged together to create new and different tastes.
Stability Testing In a crash test, it was discovered that the Wiener Zuckerl was not able to sustain a single spin in the vice.
Digitalization After a photogrammetry session, it was revealed that it is not too difficult to scan a Wiener Zuckerl with its package. However, scanning the Wiener Zuckerl without its package lead to complications, since its shining structure cannot be rendered properly.
Combination of different Flavors A bag of Zuckerl was bought and each Zuckerl was cut into two parts. Then the cutted side of each Zuckerl piece was melted and combined with a different flavour. Since the flavours in one bag are not equally distributed, a flavour with a bigger Zuckerl quantity (raspberry) was used to combine it with all other flavours.
The Process & Side Effects For the process the following tools were used: 3 different knives, 2 cutting boards, a pot and a stove as well as a fork and spoon for melting and combining the flavours. During this process it was discovered that melting the Zuckerl led to a caramel-like consistency, but when the heat was very high, a kind of cotton-candy-strings were created.
Future Aspects After the second presentation a live-testing of the combined Zuckerl-flavours took place, in which the insight was gained that the combined Zuckerl was easier to fit in some mouths than the original version. Moreover, it was suggested for the future to create a low sugar Zuckerl with combined flavours, different shapes or “one big shape out of a whole Wiener Zuckerl bag.
