IDENTITY OF LATVIA.LV
LATVIA.LV ?
None of our team used it daily or even knew about latvia.lv website. And we are not the only ones. We wanted to find out where is that problem. Latvia.lv should be very important for Latvian citizens. The aim of the website is to ensure quick and convenient access to the services provided by Latvian State institutions and municipalities.
NO NATIONAL SYMBOLS
NO NATIONAL COLOURS
Our focus was on the visual aspects of latvia.lv website. Threw exploration and conversations, we came to a conclusion, that latvija.lv do not represent itself as an official national website. Firstly it do not include national symbols and secondly it’s colour code have no connection to our traditional colours (which we consider to be maroon and white). As our time was limited, we focused on and tried to solve those two main things.
AMBER COAT OF ARMS
FORESTS HONEY FLAG
ICE FISHING FOLK SONGS
RIGA
IDENTITY OF LATVIA BALTIC SEA
COUNTRYSIDE BLACK BREAD “LIELVARDE’S” BELT
FOLK DANCES
HOCKEY We started with defining the identity symbols of Latvia. As a result we got some main key words which are highlighted, and they were – flag of Latvia, coat of arms of Latvia, folk dances, folk songs, Riga, Baltic sea, forests, icefishing, black bread, hockey and “Lielvarde’s” belt.
COAT OF ARMS FLAG
IDENTITY OF LATVIA BALTIC SEA
“LIELVARDE’S” BELT
From all symbols we choosed the ones which in our opinion could represent latvia.lv as best as possible, not to mention, that it have to look official, trustfull and representative, so we choosed coat of arms of Latvia, flag of Latvia, Baltic sea and “Lielvarde’s” belt.

NATURE BACKGROUND
We* made different examples of latvija.lv first page (including previosly mentioned identity symbols of Latvia), examples we divided in 5 categories: official, LV symbols, grid of pictures, grid of icons and nature background. *special thanks to our girls from Latvian Academy of Culture, who also made very good and creative examples, without knowledge in graphic design! :)
We tested them on the potential users. They had to choose the ones which would work better for latvia.lv.
NATurE BAcKGrOuND COAT OF ARMS OF LATVIA BALTIC SEA
In this example we included such identity symbols as the coat of arms of Latvia and the Baltic sea in the background. This is the winner example (chosen by 17 of 24 people) in category “nature background” as the first page of latvija.lv.
OFFIcIAL
COAT OF ARMS OF LATVIA NATIONAL COLOURS
In this example we included such identity symbols as the coat of arms of Latvia and the colours of flag of Latvia, such as white and maroon. This is the winner example (chosen by 18 of 24 people) in category “official”.
SYmBOLS OF LATVIA LATVIAN FLAG COAT OF ARMS OF LATVIA
In this example we included such identity symbols as the coat of arms of Latvia, the colours of flag of Latvia and the flag of Latvia itself. This is the winner example (chosen by 19 of 24 people) in category “Symbols of Latvia”.
GrID WITH PIcTurES COAT OF ARMS OF LATVIA PICTURES OF LATVIANS
NATIONAL COLOURS In this example we included such identity symbols as the coat of arms of Latvia, colours of flag of Latvia, some pictures with latvian identity to illustrate each category of the list. This is the winner example (chosen by 17 of 24 people) in category “Grid with pictures”.
GrID WITH IcONS COAT OF ARMS OF LATVIA ICONS

In this example we included such identity symbols as the coat of arms of Latvia, colours of flag of Latvia and some icons to illustrate each category of the list. This is the winner example (chosen by 23 of 24 people) in category “Grid with icons”.
TOP 3
From previosly showed winner examples in all categories, the most highlighted winners were “nature background”, “grid with pictures” and “grid with icons”.
cONcLuSION NATIONAL COLOURS COAT OF ARMS OF LATVIA ICONS
“LIELVARDE’S BELT”
As a conclusion of our example’s test winner and majority opinion to include “Lielvarde’s” belt, we made the resultative example, which included such identity symbols as the coat of arms of Latvia, colours of flag of Latvia, icons to illustrate each category of the list and “Lielvarde’s” belt.

BRIEFING
DAY 1 administrative officers in Latvija
people still choose to use government services “face to face” We find out that there is a problem with administrative officers, who provide e-services at the place. There is many people who still choose to use government servies ‘’face to face’’ and administrative officers do not have convenient possibilieties to tell them about these services in easy, clear and fully understandable way.
THE BRIEF Change a situation to a better one for administrative officers, who provide e-services at the place.

Our final resault is an open discussion...
What can we do? How to organize a system for both anitas and ministry?
FINAL RESAULT
DAY 3
It’s a huge experience of presentation art. It’s a new poinf of wiev. It’s a luck to be here. We wanted to pay attention to common administrative officer, that is working to help Latvia citizen. To focus on the importance of “eye to eye” contact, to speak to real people and to trust him. We understand, that it’s a new age to turn all information from paper to digital, but ewerybody should understand that computer can’t replace real Anitas smile.
CONT_ACT RIGA
DAY 3
Most of the administrative officers with whom we talked supported tool (brochure, banner etc.) idea. This shows that existing problem is actual and there is necessity to deal with the situation.
In the future there should be initiated some methods, which improve better communication between administrative officers and ministry.
At the end we do not have one specific answer to the existing problem. But as we understood most important thing is to start ‘melting the ice’ and bring some important questions into the discussion. This is needed for all involved sides - administrative offices, ministies and of course also for us - e-services users.
CONCLUSIONS
after-workshop
What we got from all of this? - new experience together with Martin - it is good to have acknowledgment paper after all of this
FEEDBACKS
after-workshop I liked to be on ohter side. Usually I'm just a random citizen, but now I had this possibility to look what happens in the otnher side of governments walls. This made me think... If people on the one side think that they have done their work by showing one presentation, but people on other side think that it was just for their information - there something is disconnected. If you give some information for anybody, check twice - Did he understand it correctly. I'm just thinking about timing. It was interesting. I think it was too short, but might be that, if it would be longer we wouldn’t be so concentrated and wouldn’t get so far. Thank you, Martin! Maija
FEEDBACKS
after-workshop Concept which includes fact that we must go on the streets and ask people (Anitas) what they think about our idea seems valuable for me. At the first moment it does not make you feel very comfortable to go out of comfort zone, but at the end it is meaningful. We watch people reactions, speak with them and let them speak and all this gives deeper sense for the Project. It is not about what we think they need, but really understand what are true needs for those people. Maybe the time was too short for our group, we would like to make a deeper investigation to speak with more people and have even better understanding of all this situation with real Anitas. At the end, I can say that this was great time together and great teamwork with, firstly, with my group partners and, secondly, with all workshop members. The atmosphere was very friendly and cheery and this made all this workshop journey joyful. Also the final result maybe at the first time was something different of what we expected, but after CONT_ACT conference and feedback we understood that our main goal was to start asking questions to the audience and let them think about the situation with Anitas.
FEEDBACKS
after-workshop "Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success." --Henry Ford The difference between success and failure is a great team. The atmosphere created was very comfortable and conducive to students growth as an individuals and we will go back as a motivated persons. You have created a positive difference. It was a wonderful experience being a part of this workshop. It was an effective blend of theory, analogies, stories and practice where Martin has been very patient and has done an excellent job at ‘lighting a spark’ in all of us. It has been an eye-opening workshop, a wonderful training. Effective examples and stories to download information in a very simple manner. We also had an amazing team work. Being able to work in a team is important in today's work environment. There are many skills involved in effective teamwork. No matter how smart, talented, driven, or passionate you are, your success depends on your ability to build and inspire a team, to work better together toward a common vision and goals.

JAM JURMALA RAINIS & ASPAZIJA
The 2015 UNESCO proclaimed Rainis and Aspazija (poets) 150-years anniversary. Jurmala is proud with the memorial sites of these giants and would be interested in ideas related to commemoration of both poets and their visibility in the urban environment.

pre-workshop survey Before this workshop Rainis and Aspazia for us actually was well known figures. But at the same time it is the main reason for that you actually don’t know anything more. Every of us came there with some large issues about them what we clarify before we came in the house of Aspazia – our first day meeting point. One came with historical and structured presentation about poets, stories about their literature obligatory reading at school and their personalities, another came with Aspasia sweets from Skriveri and the magazine with fashion pictures from shooting in the same place we had-only before restoration.
briefings The key of this jam was that we needed to be very open-minded to create new ideas for new design platforms. We had three days, two groups of people with a different studying experience, Rainis and Aspazia, Jurmala like a place for something more than relaxing SPA and sea. We also had very well structured topics from Martin about how we are recommended to work. Mix like we think that it’s better, create how much we can without any borders. But at the same time cut, cut, cut everything that our project make too big for our resources. That wasn’t easy!
the process and steps within the workshop In our group we were three students from Latvian Academy of Art and one from Latvian Academy of Culture. It was enough to create different ideas and also search for their developments in a various ways. First evening in 15 minutes we came out with idea about comics! That was bang idea to make special train using posters with special series of drawing and modern designed comics what being like a chat between Rainis and Aspazia. Modern way how to let know about this personalities for those who are not very interested in literature or exactly this authors. After first day spending in the house of Aspazia we had a lot of background information about their life. We had a touch especially for their love letters. Also we had a chance to get copies from some of them. Second day we knew that for us this is the main value of this people what we want to tell about to others from or in Jurmala not only in 2015 but also always. They writhed to each other for 35 years in more than 2400 letters no matter where they was or how they was feeling Rainis and Aspazia was trying to tell about things and feelings what they care about in a specific type of language – so sensitive and deep that people from outside even don’t understand it. We wanted to let people get known them from more personal and intimate aspect than we do it in school; let them know about letters what is included in UNESCO heritage in a discipline of Memory of the World from 2009. We started to read fragments from their correspondence and cute out some peaces that make short conversations between them. We were surprised how unusual the letters are.

We started to read fragments from their correspondence and cute out some peaces that make short conversations between them. We were surprised how unusual the letters are.
the experience and feedback at the various presentations Because that we had a different skills and background of our studies and also division of jam groups the results and the topics about what people talked and discussed in the presentations was really diverse. One prepared icons of design, other platform for discussions (that was the result of really open-mind thinking) and we – place for feelings in a way of the value of Latvian units of culture. This was three days workshop actually where all what we had was about people and their needs or abilities in away of make it shown in design, creative details and functions.
the students evaluation In three days we create projects what in a normal, usual condition could take several months. Very useful area and place changing. Great team work skills and learning how to create better and more effective (also to see differences what and why some exercises make someone calm, another nervous). To dare tell about your idea to others especially do it in other language. If we would make this design jam in Riga it seems that we never get to those result what we had now. Chance that we were able to spend and taste three days in Jurmala was an amazing starting point and resource to continue and at the end came out with ideas like this - made so close and natural ideas about them of the reason about aspect of authentic environment.
create a platform interface for additional future feedback and remarks This interface was very helpful because otherwise we haven’t met and thought about Rainis and Aspazia so saturated that after you have feeling that you know them well. Remember, at the start there was said something about well known figures about people at the same time knows all and nothing... Putting together art and culture students it was a space, field where ideas come across different solutions. And also you started to arise connections, collaboration about what we even haven’t visualized and concede before.

1. BEFORE LOVING SOMETHING, YOU HAVE TO GET TO KNOW IT.
Jurmala - resort city in Latvia with potential and qualities: - nature, beach - historical heritage (city of Rainis and Aspazija) - rehabilitation resorts - location, infrastucture - traditions (Jomas street celebration) - tourist attraction
2. USE WHAT EXISTS TO CREATE WHAT IS TO BE.
Next year (2015) Jurmala will be the city of Rainis and Aspazija. We think of not forcing Rainis and Aspazija and culture on Jurmala’s visitors and habitants. Culture has to be present in a smart and well designed way.
3. THINKING OUT OF THE BOX.
Before the culture we thought of people. Where are they? What is the value of Jurmala for them? And we got one answer - BEACH. So we don’t have to bring people to culture, bet bring culture to them. To the beach.
4. HOW TO FIND THE WAY FOR THE NEW SOCIAL PLAFORM? We found ourselves lost in the Jurmala beach and Rainis and Aspazija compulsory literature. So we developed idea of “culture navigation” and “culture of navigation”. We imagine Rainis and Aspazija as a navigators from people’s beloved beach to cultural sights. And we hope that no children would be lost on beach if the culture of navigation improved.

Event highlighted a particular perspective of creative industries — design and design thinking as an effective instrument for creating and strengthening new partnerships. Presentation of the results were highly evaluated by more than 120 conference participants, and results were taken back to the public institutions and private companies for further development. Lilita Sparane Executive Director, Latvian IT Cluster I hope after this workshop – design thinking will be part of professional performance of culture management students. Very valuable was also the network of involved institutions – thanks to all supporters! Agnese Hermane Head of Culture Management and Creative Industries programme Latvian Academy of Culture

I liked and why “I was very inspired because of that feeling that three days you can be away from everyday rhythm.” Anete ”Unusual, unexpected way of thinking, creating, generating useful ideas; lots of fun.” Kristīne “I did like the whole concept of the design jam - having to work together with so many different people and opinions” Liene Bērziņa “Content was very structured.” Māris Mortukāns This made me think… “...that modern way of design is first of all design thinking. And method. This made me think about information design.” Kristaps Sūna “...that more often we need to cooperate with people who live or think different - that helps ourselves to create new, fresh formulas of how we do, act and think.” Anete “About the fact how many things can be done in such a short period of time if something is already planned in advance” Liene Bērziņa “Hearing doesn´t mean understanding...” Agnese
What I have experienced I could link it with … “Think, do, talk, learn more.” Maija Spire I didn´t like and why “My feelings were uncomfortable because of time limits for some exercises and also because of presenting in English (but that was very good training)” Anete What I have experienced I could link it with … “Group work - it´s always hard to do that, but it´s worth it!” Arvīds This was too short, please more on … “socializing (between groups and between academies), exchanging experiences.” Kristīne Something else that I would like to mention … “You´re doing great job, I´ve taken lots of good ideas and advises from this workshop!” Kristīne “ich habe mir, wenn ich ehrlich bin, mehr fachlichen input erwartet. ” ... “Thanks. It was great experience.” Māris Mortukāns

Design Jam izstāde un radošās darbnīcas exhibition and workshops
