Best of Peer Award 2020

Leuven Short Film Festival is not only a festival for a film loving audience, but also a meeting place for directors. And they are very interested to see each other's work. That is why last year, the festival created the Peer Award, a prize that participating directors give their colleagues (or 'peers'). In this compilation, you can watch the six films nominated by the filmmakers last year, kicking off with the film that took home the award.

Kortfilmfestival Leuven is niet alleen een publieksfestival, maar ook een ontmoetingsplaats voor regisseurs. En die zijn natuurlijk ook bijzonder geïnteresseerd in elkaars werk. Daarom riep het festival vorig jaar de Peer Award in het leven, een prijs die deelnemende regisseurs aan hun collega’s (of ‘peers’) geven. De zes films die vorig jaar genomineerd werden door de filmmakers, kan je nu bekijken in deze compilatie die start met de film die de prijs uiteindelijk naar huis mocht nemen.

Best friends Cas and Naomi are graduating from high school and spend every day together. They have been best friends for years, and feel totally safe with each other. But when their future plans take them in different directions, their relationship wobbles.

Cas en Naomi zijn al jarenlang beste vrienden, ze voelen zich volstrekt veilig in hun vriendschap en brengen zoveel mogelijk tijd samen door. Nu ze bijna klaar zijn met de middelbare school lijken nieuwe toekomstplannen hen echter uit elkaar te drijven.

De Berørte (The Affected)

Rikke Gregersen • Norway • 2020 • 13 min. Minutes before take-off, a passenger refuses to sit down in an attempt to prevent the deportation of a man on board of the plane. The pilot suddenly finds himself in a position where he has to take a political stand he has no interest in taking.

Net voor opstijgen weigert een passagier van een vliegtuig plaats te nemen op haar stoel, om de deportatie van een man aan boord tegen te houden. Hierdoor bevindt de piloot zich plots ongewild in de positie waarin hij een politiek standpunt moet innemen.

Laurynas Bareisa • Lithuania • 2020 • 13 min. Using a faceless doll a criminal reenacts his brutal crime. Surprisingly he is not the only one being judged.

Met behulp van een gezichtsloze pop speelt een crimineel zijn wrede misdaad na. Verrassend genoeg is hij niet de enige die wordt beoordeeld.

Perpetual Night

Pedro Peralta • Portugal • 2020 • 17 min. Spain, 1939. During the night two Falangist Guards appear at the house where Paz is taking refuge with her family. Paz immediately understands the fatality of this visit. With no chance to escape, she asks to breastfeed her newborn daughter one last time.

Spanje 1939. ‘s Nachts kloppen twee Falangisten aan bij het huis waar Paz met haar gezin naar is gevlucht. Paz begrijpt onmiddellijk de fataliteit van dit bezoek en vraagt of ze nog een laatste keer borstvoeding kan geven aan haar pasgeboren dochter.

Dustin

Naïla Guiguet • France • 2020 • 20 min. In an abandoned warehouse, a crowd is dancing as one to techno music. Among them is Dustin, a young transgender, and his friends Felix, Raya and Juan. As the night draws on, collective hysteria morphs into sweet melancholy, and euphoria into yearning for tenderness.

In een verlaten hangar danst een menigte op technomuziek. Onder hen Dustin, een jonge transgender, en zijn vrienden Félix, Raya en Juan. Naarmate de nacht vordert, verandert de collectieve hysterie in zoete melancholie en de euforie in een verlangen naar tederheid.

Angina Pectoris

Filip Mojzes • Croatia • 2020 • 18 min. Zoran is always up to something, running from here to there, always working. He doesn’t take any breaks and has trouble finding peace of mind. Sometimes running away seems like the easiest way out, but it turns out to be harder than he thought.

Zoran is altijd druk bezig, hij haast zich van de ene plaats naar de andere, van het ene werk naar het volgende. Zijn leven staat nooit stil en Zoran vindt geen rust meer. Weglopen lijkt soms de gemakkelijkste uitweg, maar blijkt toch moeilijk te zijn.
