Filmmaker Sebastian Mulder is fascinated by the ever-changing and complex relationship between people and nature. In our cities, nature is increasingly pushed back and even replaced by all kinds of simulations. We like watching wild animals in a documentary, but not in our own habitat. Two fascinating short documentaries are complemented by a very original walk through the city that focuses on the (often hidden) nature in our city.

Filmmaker Sebastian Mulder is gefascineerd door de steeds veranderende en complexe relatie tussen de mens en de natuur. In onze steden wordt de natuur steeds meer teruggedrongen en zelfs vervangen door allerlei simulaties. Wilde dieren willen we wel in een documentaire zien, maar liever niet in ons eigen leefgebied. Twee boeiende korte documentaires worden aangevuld met een bijzonder originele stadswandeling die focust op de (vaak verborgen) natuur in onze stad.

Naya – Der Wald hat tausend Augen

The young female wolf Naya was fitted with a GPS collar in 2017 by German researchers. When the wolf walked from East Germany to Belgium, it made headlines. A fascinating collage of wildlife and surveillance cameras follows Naya on her journey.

De jonge wolvin Naya kreeg in 2017 een gps-halsband aangemeten door Duitse onderzoekers. Toen de wolf vanuit Oost-Duitsland naar België liep, was dit prompt groot nieuws. Een fascinerende beeldcollage van wild- en bewakingscamera’s volgt Naya op haar reis.

Natuurgids Stijn Vranckx kijkt naar Leuven met heel andere ogen dan de gemiddelde inwoner of toerist. Hij neemt je mee op een bijzonder boeiende stadswandeling die je blik op de stad voorgoed verandert. Je kan de wandeling ofwel voor, ofwel na het filmblok ‘Natuur in de stad’ doen.

Artificial grass on a balcony, a conference room with tree wallpaper, a palm beach in the doctor's waiting room. Simulations of nature are all around us. To what extent does this fake nature meet the needs of city dwellers? And will artificial nature ever replace real nature?

Kunstgras op het balkon, een vergaderzaal met bomenbehang, een palmenstrand in de wachtkamer bij de dokter. Overal zie je simulaties van de natuur. In hoeverre voldoet die nepnatuur aan de behoeften van de stadsbewoners? En gaat kunstmatige natuur de echte natuur ooit vervangen?
