Dabbawallas Inspire the NDMC Scheme Though this news is a little old, but its’ worth sharing. Who doesn’t know the Mumbai dabawallas and their daily routine? Right from the early morning hours when they leave their homes to pick the home cooked dabbas to the early evening hours when they are returning with the empty tiffin boxes. Many tiffin services business have started with their robust system. The latest in the inspiration is the NDMC. The New Delhi Municipal Corporation has established a canteen under the “Urja” Scheme. At present only women who are either widows, unemployed or under-privileged are part of the scheme. Training to all such women has been imparted by the Delhi Institute of hotel Management and Catering Technology. They will be preparing food that will be sold through tiffin service in the city.
NDMC believes that taking such a step is a way ahead to empowerment of women. At present 30 women have been chosen and the number will eventually rise over a period of time. The food is currently being served at all NDMC offices and seeing the success the scheme will be extended to other offices as well. The menu is very simple and basic and has been pegged at Rs.40/- per tiffin. The main emphasis is on hygiene and nutritional value with price accessible to all. Acc. to NDMC the cost of project would be around Rs. 10 lakh that includes the equipments, machinery and other operation al costs.
