Ten Reasons to Embrace UK Self Catering Holidays…
S
elf-catering holidays often come in for a bit of a battering. The idea of doing your own cleaning and cooking on the annual vacation is not everyone’s idea of escapism. But the flexibility and financial savings these kinds of holidays can afford travellers often outweigh the domestic drudgery. And, with a bit of planning, you can reduce the chores to a minimum and maximise the fun. Here are ten reasons to embrace UK selfcatering holidays…
1
It won’t be dampened by the weather If there’s one thing you can guarantee about a UK holiday – it will, at some point, rain. If you are really 6
Just for Her issue 13 2017.indd 6
lucky, you will also get some gusts and a spot of hail. Having a place to retreat when the skies open can be a blessing on a staycation. Snuggling up in front of the fire and being able to put your wet clothes in a tumble dryer is definitely more relaxing than having to wait for the chambermaid to finish servicing your hotel room and having nowhere to air your damp garments. Having several corners you can all escape into will also be less restricting than the one or two rooms you and your family might have to squeeze into in a hotel. Equally, when it’s sunny - and if you have picked accommodation with outdoor space - you can enjoy your own private space to
sunbathe or have a barbecue.
2
It’s economical Most holidaymakers tend to find self-catering is much kinder on the purse strings. Even where the price of a hotel and holiday cottage is similar, the extra costs tend to be lower when you are buying and making your own food and planning your own entertainment. Team up with other family members or friends and you can split the cost by sharing the accommodation. Louise Geal, a childminder from Kent who has two children aged five and seven has been booking self-catering holidays for the past eight years, lured into them by – among other factors - the financial benefits.
30/03/2017 11:52
“Having kids made a massive change to our income and lifestyle,” she explained. “When you’ve got young kids, self-catering saves your sanity because you reduce the costs of eating out all the time and therefore don’t worry about money quite so much.” Louise has a point. Staying in a B&B or hotel in the UK means breakfast is often included but lunch and dinner, generally, are not. Without any facilities for making your own sandwiches you could be looking at forking out for 28 meals on a fortnight’s holiday!
3
There’s no rush If you are not a ‘morning person’ (and who should be on holiday?) being in your own space means you don’t have to set an alarm to ensure you are ready for breakfast in the morning. Indeed, not having to draw up a bathroom rota to guarantee you, your partner and the kids are showered and dressed well before 9.30am when the dining room closes, takes out a lot of unnecessary stress. You can wake up at your own pace, eat breakfast in your pyjamas and plan your day at a leisurely pace. This is one of the reasons Karen Wood, a furniture restorer and artist from South London, books self-catering holidays. “It’s lovely not having to fit in with anyone else’s timetable as you do staying in a B&B or hotel,” she said. “You can really relax and if the cottage is nice, spend time there too. We generally look for one with a garden or outdoor space in the warmer months.” Of course, this leisurely pace applies at bedtime, as it does at breakfast. If you want to sit up all night playing cards or chatting
over a bottle of wine you can do so, without disturbing sleeping children or other hotel guests.
4
Flexibility to explore Having no restrictions on what time you have to eat and not having to dash back to ensure you don’t get locked out is one of the major benefits of self-catering accommodation. If you want to take a day-trip or a sightseeing tour you can leave when you want, prepare a packed lunch and return to your holiday home for whatever time you like. You’ll have none of the restrictions faced through curfews at B&Bs or hotels. What’s more, as fun and convenient as on-site activities in hotel and half board or all-inclusive resorts can be, they can also detract from tourism in surrounding areas. Wendy Buck, a nursery teacher from Kent, said the lack of restriction self-catering provided her family on a recent holiday to the Isle of Wight meant they ended up venturing further afield. “We wanted to
explore the island and didn’t want to be restricted to a resort,” she explained. “It did us a favour as the weather was fairly miserable for most of the holiday and we could easily have stayed on site if we were in a resort. “However, it got us looking up places further afield and we ended up exploring parts of the island that we didn’t think we would get to. “We found some lovely places, one of which we returned to when we revisited the island.”
5
It’s great for fussy eaters For people with special dietary requirements, hotels can sometimes be incredibly restrictive. It’s not uncommon for people to be ‘doubling up’ on meals because they have to buy their own breakfast due to a lack of choice on the menu. Indeed, if you have children whose tastes are not fully developed just yet, self-catering can solve a lot of problems. Louise explained that food was a big factor when choosing self-catering over less flexible 7
Just for Her issue 13 2017.indd 7
30/03/2017 11:52
7
No airports While the hustle and bustle of airports might be exciting for some, for others they have chaos and disarray written all over them. Baggage restrictions, flight delays, tight security, long queues… delays, more delays. It’s not the most relaxing start to your annual break.
options: “Eating out with young kids can be stressful and messy,” she said, “and we’re always worrying about disturbing everyone around us.” She said this anxiety used to be exacerbated by having a ‘bad eater’ amongst her children and the fact they were spending so much by going to restaurants. With self-catering they can make picnics for days out, prepare meals that suit everyone’s taste and go out to restaurants for a treat.
Karen said, as they often travel with her 87-year-old mother-in-law, Rosemary, access, location and facilities are crucial. “We always pick places that are easily accessible and well-appointed,” she said. “Also, for comfort which is important considering Rosemary’s age, they need to be warm and have good bathrooms and no steep stairs either. She generally prefers single level accommodation so as not to have any trip hazard if she gets up in the night.”
For many the idea of just loading up the car with as much stuff as you can squeeze into the boot (and below the children’s dangling legs) is far less hassle. It means you can take as many games, toys and books to entertain your group as you like, without worrying about paying for excess luggage. Louise said: “I always go armed with a couple of drawing pads, a pack of colouring pens, games and playing cards. No technology! On holiday we sit and chat and play cards, hangman etc.” You can drive at your own pace, without having to worry about departure times and queue lengths, and you can use the journey as part of the holiday. Stopping off overnight and visiting attractions on the way will break up a long drive.
Louise’s tip is to book an online supermarket shopping delivery to arrive an hour or so after you plan to check into your accommodation. That way you save the stress of dragging the entire family around unfamiliar aisles of the local food store. It’s not just families who benefit from the flexibility around food. Karen and her partner Kathy are both vegetarians so find that being able to make their own arrangements for breakfast, lunch and dinner gives them more options. “As vegetarians,” she explained, “we can sometimes get a raw deal as out of the city, places are not adventurous enough with the choices they offer in this respect. This means our choice of where to say is governed by good food eateries too. The obvious advantage of renting a cottage is convenience and the economy of being able to cook on the premises.”
6
Perfect for groups and families We have already touched on this – booking self-catering accommodation is ideal if you are in big groups because the cost can be shared. However, it is often more convenient for groups which include older or disabled members too. 8
Just for Her issue 13 2017.indd 8
30/03/2017 11:52
8
Animals can come too! Holidaying in self-catering accommodation in the UK also means you can bring your pets and it means you don’t have to fork out for kennels or pet-sitter fees. Many holiday accommodation owners allow pets so it’s well worth doing your research if you want to bring your faithful friend with you on your trip.
9
They are more discreet There’s nothing worse, when you are trying to enjoy a romantic break, than having the over-friendly couple from the room down the corridor trying to engage you in a conversation during a candlelit meal. This is why self-catering is the ideal place for a romantic retreat with the other half. You won’t have any disturbances, you can stay in bed all day if you wish – no one need even know you are there. Choose a rural cottage with an open fire in a remote location surrounded by beautiful countryside and you’ll have the ingredients for a blissful break.
10
Exploring the UK countryside How many of us are guilty of living just a few miles from a famous landmark or beauty spot and having never actually visited the place? There is so much to explore in the UK from the rugged Cornish Coastline all the
way up to the dramatic Scottish highlands and islands that you need not venture far before discovering the perfect holiday retreat. Karen said she has been able to explore some beautiful parts of England, Ireland, Wales and Scotland on her self-catering holidays. “The areas we’ve stayed in have all lived up to their promise of being beautiful areas from a tiny Cornwall fishing village to the Pembrokeshire coast, Oban in Scotland and Portmeirian in Wales,” she said. Meanwhile, Louise said she wouldn’t do any other type of holiday. “There’s a whole world to see,” she said, “But our very own beautiful country is right at our feet!”

When things are getting on top of you it’s easy to feel that you are carrying a massive weight on your shoulders. Imagine making gradual changes which could make a world of difference to your situation. Hypnotherapy and the Bowen Technique both offer the means to re-learn the art of relaxation. In addition, hypnosis can help to reduce stress, anxiety and fears, help manage phobias, even symptoms of IBS, whilst Bowen therapy can help with physical injuries, from frozen shoulder to sprained ankles, sinus problems to backache. COME MARCHING IN By Angie Tailor-Joice
There are few things that universally unite forces wives the way a March in does. Where will we be put? What are the schools like? Do I have a garden? Do I have neighbours? Do I already know anybody? What colour are the carpets? I could go on. It’s a difficult and exciting time, especially if it’s your first one… here are 8 handy hints to make marching into that married quarter as effortless as possible…
ONE
It is perfectly acceptable to go to your future quarter and stare through the front windows (and go through or climb over the back gate if the quarter is unoccupied and look through the back ones too) to assess room size, shape and carpet colour. In fact if you don’t do it, be prepared for the torrent of abuse you will get when you post online complaining that your rooms are small, your sofa doesn’t fit and your carpets are salmon pink… why didn’t you go and press your nose against the window like a normal stalker/ crazyperson and check these things before you accepted? Why? You’ve only yourself to blame. Equally, if you are moving out of the area, please ask other people who live nearby to take pictures of your new house and send them to you. It’s like house tinder..hinder..?
TWO
Attention to detail is imperative in the first couple of weeks. Be uber alert to any minor imperfections in your new home. Any bits of peely paint, scuffs to skirting boards, cracks in walls, mould on ceilings, teeeeny marks in the carpet, wobbly door handles… anything. You make a note of it and you write it down good. Put it all in the March in pack they gave you, every little detail. Then totally don’t send it. And forget all about
it until you march out to go to your next quarter. Then do the same thing there.
THREE
Spend at least 6 weeks spying on your neighbours and engineering ways to bump into them before you speak to them. And I mean proper spying. Not just bog standard Facebook spying ie. seeing if you’ve got mutual friends and showing pictures of the husband to your husband to see if he knows them, looking through all her photos to see if she has lots of parties, drinks regularly, is prettier (thinner with perkier boobs) than you (important to know, she might sunbathe in the garden in summer… and you might need a head start on your summer bikini body diet), how many kids live next door, where they last went on holiday… you know the usual stuff. I’m talking proper spying. Hanging your clothes out in the garden whilst staring into their house, running through the house with a half empty bin liner so you can put your rubbish out at the same time, turning your telly down to listen to them row, looking into their car to see how messy it is, timing your school run leaving time to the same time as theirs…but DON’T speak to them. The most you may say/do is a non-commital “hiya” nod. Only after 6 weeks of accidentally bumping into them in this way may you speak to them. And you must start with this sentence “Oh Hi, I
think we’re neighbours ”… then proceed to ask them questions about the things you already know about them…do you have any mutual friends, how many kids, where do you go on holiday, what time they leave to go on the school run.
FOUR
The (parking) space race is one of the most important things for you to do right. Although not technically part of your house, the way you do battle for the all important parking space in front of your house will concrete your status on the patch. Fight for your space. I’m talking about squeezing into it even when it seems impossible, moving your car no matter what time of day/night/middle of dinner it is when the space is available. Do NOT give in to the temptation to move your car up and park next to the one in front even though parking in front of your house will take up 2 parking spaces. You must remain strong and resolute. Otherwise the neighbours will think you are a total doormat, and before you know it, all of your eggs, sugar and Calpol will have been taken by your neighbours in the form of borrowing a cupful. Establish early on that your are no push over and are in fact top dog by winning at parking your car outside your house, and this problem will belong to some other poor soul… whose eggs, sugar and Calpol you shamelessly ‘borrow’
16
Just for Her issue 13 2017.indd 16

a cupful at a time. NB if upon reading this you realise that you are the schmo who people ask for cupfuls of food cupboard stock, then you have clearly failed at the parking space status race. The damage is irreversible, and there is no point even trying to change your patch status. Accept it, stock up on staple cupboard items and try harder when you move to your next listing. Your status here is confirmed.
FIVE
Take all the curtains down immediately. Put them in a black bin liner and hide them at the back of the airing cupboard or under your bed. The curtains they provide you with contain the souls of all the decent contractors the MOD turned down before using the company who gave them the cheapest quotes for building, fitting the fixtures, wiring and decorating MOD housing.
SIX
If you don’t already have one, buy a wooden radiator cover for the gopping fireplace you will have in your living room. I promise you, you’ll thank me for it.
SEVEN
You should always compare your garden to your next door neighbours. If they cut their grass once a week then you should do the same. Or maybe more… be sure to be out there before they are. Make sure your garden furniture is nice and new and you are seen at least once a week watering a flower bed. Of course you don’t know what the f*** is going to grow out of it, it’s all about appearances. If you want to really show off, buy a hanging basket and cut the grass outside the front of your house a week before the MOD guys come to do it.
EIGHT
at least 6 weeks spying on your “ Spend neighbours and engineering ways to bump into them before you speak to them. And I mean proper spying…
Buy new soft furnishings. I know you told him when you bought the last lot of cushions that they would go with all your furniture, so when you moved you wouldn’t have to buy more stuff, but that was, in fact, a lie. Here is a template shopping list for you if you have just moved into your first quarter…rug, cushions, curtains, lampshade(s), sofa throw, wall hangings, wall stickers (preferably ones that say something like “no matter where he is, I have his heart/in this family we do deployments).. if you are lucky, you might even be able to get some big ticket items out of him… a coffee table, a book case or even a new sofa..if the shopping thing doesn’t work, start making noises about having the neighbours round for a getting to know you/housewarming party…the shopping will definitely be the lesser of 2 evils!

HOW T O ‘Own’ Y OU R REN TED H O ME By Kirsty Heaton We have all been there - our first rented home. When my husband and I first moved into our small 2 bed flat in London we both only had a few boxes, mainly bedroom stuff. As my husband couldn’t care less if we had cushions on the sofa or a rug, it was my job to try and make this empty magnolia shell our home. So here are a few of my tips to help make your house a home…
F
irst you need to pick a few colours that YOU love. Don’t go by fashion, remember this is your home, as Billy Baldwin says “stick to the things you really love. An honest room is always up to date.” I think that is so important. This house is your haven, make it around you, it’s the one place in the world that does revolve around you!
rug
1. A . There are so many rugs on the market now that we really are spoiled for choice! If you’re feeling brave get a crazy print one or bold colours. A rug will be one of the first things people see when they enter the room, so make sure it has strong links to your theme, either the print or colour. Also, think about suitability for your household, you don’t want a fluffy rug if you have a baby crawling round as they can eat it! You don’t have to spend £100s on a rug either if you are trying to save the pennies there are plenty of places now where you can get a nice sized rug from £40.
C U SH I O N S
t h r ows.
2. and These really can add loads to your theme, especially if your sofa doesn’t really fit in. They will also add loads of layers and just make it feel a bit homelier. If your chair needs two cushions don’t get two the same, maybe get one patterned, one with all your core colours in then get one that is blocked with your main colour just to mix it up a bit and have fun!

3.Your ! Now if you can’t paint them you may feel like you can’t do anything with them but you can! Hanging pictures is easy and won’t cost a lot. Family photos are always lovely but don’t forget you can also get (or make!) art with your colours in. If you want a real focal point on your wall try a picture frame collage or vinyl stickers - always test these first though. Again go for something that you love and that really adds something to the room, don’t just buy because it fits, buy it because you love it. If you can’t afford a lot try and get a nice family photo printed and buy a nice frame, it will really enhance the wall. Mirrors are another great idea, especially if the room you’re doing up is small, it will trick you into thinking the room is bigger, but will also reflect the light making the room much brighter.

4. My next one is … Make sure you measure your windows before choosing some and work out what drop you want. If there is a radiator under your window it is best not to cover it. If you want to make your window look bigger, fit your curtain pole higher up the wall and a bit wider than needed. I really like plain colours on curtains so tend to pick one of my core colours and use that, but if you have a plain rug, maybe get some crazy curtains - again if you don’t want to spend loads, you don’t have to, Wilko’s, Argos and other shops sell great value curtains.
5. - So here’s one that you may have forgotten or don’t give a lot of thought to…There are so many types and colours of lamp shades, it can be hard to know where to start! Again, make sure your lamp shade fits with your interior, but also what type of light will it give off when on? Does this fit with the atmosphere you are trying to create? If you want a glamorous look, try a pendant one with crystals. If you want a more natural one then buy one in your core colour, or if you’re feeling creative and want to keep the kids busy, try making one! Most of all be safe when picking your lamp shade; make sure it is the right size for the fitting or it could be a hazard.
Lorraine at Home - Snowden Painted Metal Fitted Shade In Raspberry £35
I think these are the five core points when making a house a home. You can take most of these with you when you move again as I have done many times. Be sure to add accessories - lamps, which add a lovely evening glow, candle holders on fire places or maybe things you have collected on your travels are always nice and a good conversation starter. I really hope you have found this helpful, if you take one thing away from this article let it be this: people may not like what you pick but if you want it, do it! That is the beauty of our home, it reflects us!

PROFILE
Military
Name - Rachel Mancini Age - 37 Current Location - Chicksands
When and how did you meet your partner? We met at a country pub in Australia. I was completing a Business degree at university and my husband was based in the area. He asked me what my favourite song was and then asked the DJ to play it! I have never listened to ‘My Sharona’ the same again.
Best thing about military life? The constant opportunities it provides my husband and our family. We have seen so much of Australia and now England and Europe. I also love the friendship network and connections made with fellow military families. These friendships are lifelong and like no other - we raise our children together, share meals together, make memories together and step in when family can’t. I also love the fact that, as a result of growing up in a military family, I am teaching my children to be resilient, adaptive and appreciate the small things.
Worst thing about military life? The worst thing is definitely the time apart during deployments and knowing that my husband is in such dangerous areas. My husband has deployed on eight separate occasions, for months at a time. Each time it’s a juggling act to manage work, children and just the norm of day to day life.
& Me
Favourite posting?
Without a doubt it is our posting here to Chicksands. We are Australian and my husband is on an exchange posting for a couple of years. We had never been to England before until we landed here with our three children at the start of our posting! We absolutely love it here, the camp and area is beautiful and the friendships we have made are unlike any other. The families on this camp have embraced us and really welcomed us into their community and lives. We have also had wonderful opportunities to travel to various places throughout Europe. I often find myself looking out my window and still feeling so fortunate to be here in England. We will never forget our time here.
How do you deal with goodbyes? The worst part about a goodbye is definitely the lead up to it. In Australia, most families say goodbye to their military member at the airport, however we choose to say goodbye at home, rather than dragging it out any longer. The quicker the goodbye is out of the way, the quicker we can count down to the homecoming!
Do you have certain coping mechanisms for dealing with the absence of your partner? I definitely don’t focus on the negative with him being away, particularly for the children’s sake. Rather, we write letters, draw pictures, make parcels and care packages to send over to him. We like to focus on the count down until he is home and all the exciting things that the children can show him when he is back again.
What’s your guilty secret when he’s away? Haha, I secretly love the fact that there is a lot less washing and indulging in endless reality television.
Do you do anything special when your partner returns? The children love to make posters and spend a lot of time and effort on these... we have kept all they have made over the years. We also usually like to go on a family holiday, especially to the beach, just to get away and relax as a family.
What’s your top tip for new military partners? I would say to embrace the military life and make the most of any opportunity that comes your way. Say yes to postings that may seem daunting at first, you never know the amazing time you might have there. Be a part of the community that you’re in and most of all be proud of your partner and all of their achievements along the way.

Oh no! I’ll have to power through it. (Crap. She saw me) Fake smiles and judgement, fake smiles and judgement, jaw cramp and judgement.
Uh-Oh. A kit bag. A big black kit bag.
Uh-Oh. The washing machine/tumble drier/dishwasher/telly/oven/car has broken. It’s broken. And the insurance is in his name. What the hell am I supposed to do now!?

He was duty last weekend for that knobhead who wanted to go out on the lash… he doesn’t even have any kids. Is there no humanity in this world.) I can’t ignore it. I don’t want to acknowledge it. Oh no! I’ll have to power through it. Grumble, mumble, grumble mumble, ooh facetime, grumble mumble. We’re going on deployment It’s going to be a long one This is gonna be s**t I’m not scared.

Add colour using a black sharpie to make your design show up clearly, or for a more professional finish use Liver of Sulphur to make a longer lasting black patina. It looks much better but smells like rotten eggs, so keep the windows open!
hammer (you can buy brass hammers for metal stamping, but these are not necessary) Copper discs, some of these are pre drilled with holes so avoiding the need to drill. Great for beginners. Jump rings (open to attach your design to your chain)
Finally you can punch or drill a hole before attaching a jump ring to your design and hang on a chain or similar. Tip: to keep your jump ring round don’t pull the arms apart, instead move one end up and the other down while the round shape of the circle is horizontal to the table. Close them in reverse of this. Once the circle has lost its shape it is almost impossible to get it back. Also be very careful not to dent the jump rings with the pliers, so handle with care.
Equipment you may want later:
Making your own personalized jewellery has never been easier. Metal stamping is one of the most popular and satisfying craft activities of the moment. No previous art or craft experience is necessary, just a bit of patience and some practice. With a few basic pieces of equipment: a hammer, a steel block and a metal stamping alphabet, you could be stamping out your own designs at home on your kitchen table, wherever you may be in the world. It’s really satisfying to be able to personalise your own copper, aluminium or even silver discs, these can be used to decorate necklaces, bracelets or keyrings. You don’t need to buy much specialist equipment and before long you could be creating your very own stylish jewellery designs. The most cost effective way is to start with copper or aluminium. I use a disc cutter to cut mine, but you can buy the circles already cut out, which is easier when you first begin. After a bit of practice you will be able to move on to silver and that will really make a great impression. These make super gifts; imagine how you could celebrate special occasions. Think about the words you would put on your jewellery: names are very popular. Also consider words with meaning. Empowering phrases are great to remind the wearer of a special talent or a target they are aiming to achieve. You can make a real statement!
A rubber block or a wooden tree stump to absorb the sound Additional letter stamps in various different typefaces, these convey different feelings or moods to your designs. Impressart are a really good make and they sell lots of designs of lettering, known as fonts. Design symbols: for example dog paw prints, Write down your word on a piece of paper and begin stamping the middle letter of your word. Eg. STRONG you would start with O in the middle, then add the N to the right of it, followed by the G. Next you should do the R, followed by the T and finally the S. Please note that if you have an even number of letters, just begin slightly to the right of the centre of your metal. When you are using your stamps its important to check they are the correct way up! Some of them helpfully have the letter printed on the front, which you should have facing you as you aim the letter at the metal. If these are difficult to read, you can colour them with a bright colour sharpie pen.
hearts, stars, music notes, etc A disc cutter will help you to cut your own circles. You can also buy other shape cutters such as stars or hearts. Once you get better at copper or aluminium you can move on to silver. Pliers flat nose. Two pairs to add the jump rings.
Hold your stamp vertically at 90 degrees and hammer correctly. To get a good impression it needs a light tap at first followed by a couple of heavier blows to really sink the stamp into the metal and make a clean firm impression.
Ultra polishing pads can be used to achieve a bright shine, these small square pads are pre impregnated with polish and are excellent to bring a professional shine to your hand stamped designs.
A great way to start is by pressing the stamps onto an ink pad you get from stationery stores and stamping the letters gently onto paper. You don’t need to hammer them, but can practice your position and spacing. You should rule a line and work on getting them evenly spaced. Moving onto the metal now you should tape your copper circle down to the steel block using masking tape or similar at the top and bottom. Make a mark with your sharpie in the centre of the disc and add another piece of tape horizontally all the way across just below the centre point.
You will need: A pencil, ruler and sharpie pen Masking tape or similar A small flat steel block you can get from a hardware store A steel set of letters. You can start with a basic stamping set until you get the hang of it. Around 3mm is a good size for legibility. These can be bought online fairly cheaply. A hammer, the best sort is an old steel

About Sally How of “How Fine Designs” My Jewellery design business initially started as a creative outlet for myself when my children were tiny. I had previously worked as an art teacher, so when our family relocated to Yorkshire I started making jewellery. I enrolled on a silversmithing class at the local college and was addicted to it from the word go. I remember picking my children up from school with dirty hands and face because I didn’t want to spend time washing, when I could be making jewellery! I mostly made things for myself, and friends and family, keeping it as a hobby until people kept asking me whether they could buy things as presents for themselves or their friends! Then I made some rings and bracelets with some hand stamped phrases and I realised that with this constant reminder I actually felt more confident about myself and my work. Soon I expanded my business to help artists believe in themselves too. I now help people to be a more confident version of themselves. I have built up a great rapport on Instagram with many lovely people, including lots of artists, both amateur and professional. OPINION PIECE
Women on the
O
kay… prepare the fanfare! Women are now allowed to serve in close combat units in the armed forces! Instead of merely playing a supporting role, females can now join the cavalry, infantry and armed corps. It’s a step forward for women’s equality. It’s a victory for feminism. And, what’s more it means double the amount of human beings can now be chosen for the elite band of soldiers taking on this crucial role in defending the country…

Except, that’s not what we heard last July when the then Prime Minister David Cameron announced
30/03/2017 11:55
the lifting of the ban on women serving in the military’s close combat units. Instead, all I seemed to hear were people’s shock and disgust that women could be put in such a dangerous position. Suggestions women were a ‘weak link’ and allowing them to fight was a ‘social experiment’ that would ‘cost lives’. Of course, they didn’t mind women being equal or having these same career opportunities as men. But not, it would seem, at the expense of their delicate physique or their sweet, innocent, uncorrupted minds. And not if it meant us girlies would simply come along for the ride and leave all the hard slog to the men while we sit around filing our nails. One minute we were in the 21st Century, a place where a woman was about to become Prime Minister. The next it felt a bit 1854, where women wore corsets, did lots of embroidery and didn’t say boo to a goose. One expected a gentleman to bring on some smelling salts to arouse the willowy soul who had fainted at the mere thought of a ‘lady’ holding a gun.
Just for Her issue 13 2017.indd 27
No one mentioned the fact that the talent and skill pool for our armed forces had now widened. Instead there was just lots of concern that girls were obviously nowhere near as physically fit as men - one figure being bandied around the press at the time suggested fewer than 5% of the army’s 7,000 women would pass the infantry’s fitness test. How on earth, people wondered, could they endure armed combat? Some were worried that women in the armed corps might see something, in the course of their new frontline duties, which might upset them. I listened to a radio phone in where one gentleman expressed concern that female soldiers would witness ‘horrific’ things when they were in armed combat. And another caller was concerned about how women on the frontline would cope with the arrival of their ‘monthly visitor’. I wondered who this visitor might be – the Ocado delivery driver? Someone from the gas company to read the meter?
I am not a soldier. I have never served in the armed forces. So everything I am about to say could be completely wrong. However, I am a woman and the last time I looked I could do most things that my husband could do. There are some things he does better, there are others at which I excel.Yes, he might be able to lift slightly more than me weight-wise, but I can carry stuff for longer. While he is better at lifting heavy items of furniture and boxes, I am superior at balancing a toddler on my hip for long periods of time. We have a wood-burning stove. When we get a delivery of logs, we choose an afternoon when we are free and we both - together - carry the wood from where it’s been dumped by the delivery truck to our shed. My husband can usually stack wood faster than me. I get a bit annoyed about this and find techniques to beat him. I devise all sorts of clever tricks. I wear gloves (it’s easier and therefore faster when there’s less risk of splinters). I grab

to keep up the spirits of their children and pretending they weren’t terrified. Some of them were operating heavy farm machinery. Others were making munitions. A few were using their incredible minds to crack codes or parachuting into enemy territory on intelligence missions. And, do you know what? Some of them did these things whilst - shock! horror! - on their periods! Yes, as alarming as it might seem, women can still function in harsh or even life-threatening situations whilst menstruating, ovulating and generally ‘greeting their monthly visitor’. In the latest edition of our sister magazine, Just for Families, there is an interview with a couple who met when serving together in the Navy’s Fleet Air Arm. The man now has a demanding civilian job working for the coast guard and his wife, currently on tour in command, is living on the opposite end of the country to her husband, caring for her 18-month old daughter largely as single mum in order that she can serve in the Royal Navy. Her husband said something to me, whilst being interviewed which made a real impact: “My wife has to perform to the same level as the men during the day, then come home and run a successful home and effectively try and keep up with the mums on the married patch.” This is the crux of it. And this is why women should be allowed on the frontline. Because not only are we often doing everything men are doing, we are doing a hell of a lot more on top. What do you think about women being able to serve in close combat units? Is this a government attempt to be politically correct, which is putting lives in danger? Or are women, put through the right training, as capable as men in facing physically challenging situations? We’d love to hear your views at justforher@forcespublishing.co.uk or via Facebook or Twitter.

Overcoming Employment Challenges: HOW TO TURN YOUR PASSION
INTO AN ONLINE BUSINESS… By Liat Karpel Gurwicz, Head of Strategic Marketing at Wix.com
M
ilitary spouses face unique challenges in the job market due to regular relocation, which leads to irregular job patterns and uncertainty for the employers. While moving within the country has a certain effect on employment status, international moves have a tendency to have a considerable effect on the likelihood of employment. A great solution to overcome these employment challenges is to find a job that allows you to work remotely or turn your hobby into an online business. There are several jobs that you can do remotely or on freelance basis, as long as you are passionate and committed to it. If you are organised, you can look into working as a virtual assistant; if you have a way with words or design, you can become a freelance blogger or graphic designer. Alternatively, if you’re athletic and have the passion for fitness, you might be fit enough to become a personal trainer.
to be an expert on website building as Wix’s latest technology combines website design with artificial intelligence and makes it quick and easy to build your site just by answering a few initial questions. The technology learns about your business, your style, and your current online presence to create a tailored website, complete with text and images. The best way for you to tell people about your business is to create a website where people can access and find all the essential information about you and your business.Your website should act as a one-stop shop for you to portray your strengths, skills, previous examples of work, and client testimonials.
BUILD A BASE
If you are planning to set up an online shop, make sure you do a lot of research to understand what your competition is doing in order to be able to offer something unique. Creating an online shop might seem difficult, but with the right tools you can quickly do it and have your shop ready for sales in a short period of time. Once you have created your website, it’s equally important for it to be seen. Therefore, make sure you optimise your site to increase traffic that will come from search engine results. Check out Wix. com’s blog for tips on enhancing your site’s SEO.
Most of the communication that you will be making with your clients will take place online, regardless of whether you’re working for a business or starting up your own. Nowadays it’s easy to set up your own website by using platforms such as Wix.com.You don’t have
Social Media is a great platform to expand and promote your professional and personal brand. Transitioning to using your social media professionally is a good time to do a health check
This leads to the main question: how do you go about turning your hobby or skills into an online business, and where do you start?

and make sure only information you wish to be public is and that anything posted is suitable for a larger audience. Make sure that you select the social media channel that you’re comfortable with and which is in line with your brand or the work you’re doing. Think about what your goals are and choose the platform which is right for you. If you’re a designer or a photographer, Instagram is the perfect way for you to display your work. If you are a blogger or a writer, Twitter might be a great platform for you. Ensure that you follow people in your industry and join into conversations by using relevant hashtags or those which are popular in your industry or community. If you work in accountancy or as a PA, consider using LinkedIn to connect with previous and potential new clients as well as to engage with relevant groups and share relevant industry news and opinions on your page. The most important thing is to keep your profile active with new
posts and update your skills and work experience when needed. Network, network and network some more. There’s no better way to get involved with your community than to take yourself out of your comfort zone and reach out to them. Whether it be a formal meeting or one over coffee, face-toface encounters make all the difference between occasional interactions and valuable relationships. Moreover, networking can open up a number of doors and opportunities for future job offers, partnerships, potential projects, speaking opportunities, client leads and more. In a nutshell, it exposes your business to larger audiences. As a military spouse, you might find several challenges in the job market. However, if you choose a career that is portable and you are passionate about, you can surely aim for stability, income, and fulfilment. With the right plan and steps, you can build a career that’s as rewarding as any other could be. 31

The countdown to the summer holidays has begun! But – oh – nothing is ever easy, is it? For while those long, balmy days relaxing by the pool with a cocktail are now within your grasp this also means the pressure to get that ‘beach ready’ body is being ramped up to the max. Really, right now, we should be toning, dieting, tanning, exfoliating, bleaching and generally turning ourselves into goddesses. But, the question is… can we really be arsed….?
BEACH READY ! s k c * * b** DY GETTING A BIKINI BO
The Ideal:
This season’s “must-have” swimsuit is a painfully non-existent barely-there, cutout design. The only way to rock it with anything close to style is with toned abs, a defined waist and sculpted pins. With only four weeks to go until you hit the beach there’s nothing else for it but to start a vigorous, daily 10-point toning plan aka Operation Skimpy Swimwear… You immediately begin your intensive training regime which combines half an hour of yoga at 5am, a run to the gym where you do a spin class, home for a quick celeriac, wheatgrass and spinach smoothie before Pilates. At lunch you squeeze in 50
bench presses, 100 sit ups and 200 planks which set you up nicely for your evening of High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), extra cardio, followed by a hot water with lemon and bed at 7.30pm. Result: After just four weeks of doing this every day you have abs to die for, are full of energy and a size six.
The reality:
Forget having abs to die for. Following an exercise regime like that you will actually be dead. With only four days to go before your holiday you realise with painful clarity that your bikini (which you have found, after much searching, screwed up in the
back of your knicker drawer) is slightly too small. Actually, to be honest, it’s more than ‘slightly’ too small. It just about fits as a chunky bracelet. There’s nothing else for it but to start a vigorous shopping spree aka Operation Find Something Vaguely Flattering to Wear on the Beach. You get up at 5am (because your toddler jumped on your head and demanded Cbeebies), turn on your laptop and spend three fruitless hours scouring online stores for swimsuits designed for people who are bigger than a size six. After breakfasting on last night’s leftover takeaway pizza, you drag yourself and

IN SMOOTH, BRONZED SUMMER SK The ideal:
During a particularly enjoyable and refreshing lunchtime HIIT workout, you notice your legs are looking a bit white. On closer inspection you realise they are – gasp – getting a bit hairy. Without further ado (after finishing your workout, naturally) you book in at your local beauty salon for a full leg wax. And, while you are at it, you ask if they can treat you to an eyebrow shape, eyelash tint, manicure, pedicure, facial, a round of Microdermabrasion and a Brazilian. After this exhilarating pampering session you pop into your local department store and
purchase their most expensive exfoliating skin treatment. It’s been endorsed by Kim Kardashian so it must be good. You then ‘schedule’ half an hour into your diary each day for a full-on, exfoliating session. After a few days of intense dead skin cell removing your body will be ready for an application of fake tan, which will look amazing on the first few days of holiday – before the natural tan sets in. Oh! How beautiful you will look with a sprinkle of freckles on your cheeks, frolicking in the gentle waves of the ocean!
The reality:
Since the only delicate sprinkling of freckles you have on your face are the melasma splodges kindly gifted via those generous pregnancy hormones, you are not feeling very excited about the prospect of more uneven pigmentation. You try out some fake tan on your legs but it ends up in streaks which make you look more like a street
urchin in a Dickensian period drama than a sunkissed goddess. The expensive sunless tanning cream you have been using on your face seemed to be working a treat. And then your husband asked why you were looking jaundiced, and the effect instantly wore off. Having spent a small fortune on tanning products you are skint and there’s not a penny left over for exfoliating cream to rid yourself of those horrible dead skins cells. Oh well, you are sure you read somewhere that sand is a natural exfoliator. You will wait until you are being buried alive on the beach by the gang of dubious-looking kids your offspring have befriended at the holiday camp… You start weighing up your options with regard to sun cream. You could spend approximately 73% of your holiday slathering greasy factor 50 sunblock on your skin and 27% relaxing. Or you could ditch the sun block and go straight for bright red lobster tan thereby creating much more relaxation time. You opt for the Brit’s Abroad Tan since it’s less hassle and will ensure you are instantly identifiable as English-speaking. This is very handy as it means you won’t need to attempt the words “cerveza” or “Fanta naranja” in bars which, let’s face it, is quite tricky after tres botellas de vino. Muchas gracias. De nada.
your screaming toddler to the shops for a High Intensity Indigestion Inducing (HIII) swimsuit trying-on session. You lose 300 calories dragging your child’s pushchair up the stairs because the lift is broken and another 300 shoehorning yourself into 87 different kinds of swimwear whilst also placating a squirming monster. You immediately regain 600 calories at lunchtime courtesy of a McDonald’s Happy Meal. You go home without a single piece of holiday swimwear but with an entire new wardrobe for the kids, then gain another 1,000 calories downing a bottle of wine to drown your sorrows. 41

GENTLY TOUSLED, BOHO BEACH HAIR The ideal:
For the last year you have been slowly and surely - yet enthusiastically - building up a beautiful board on Pinterest of bohoinspired beach hair updos. You squeal with delight that you can finally try out some of those gorgeous styles… Two weeks before your holiday you go to the hairdressers, get a trim to rid your flowing locks of any split ends and acquire some blonde highlights through your tresses. At home you deep condition your hair daily in the run up to the holiday and, because you are so financially savvy, use some coconut oil to maintain the lustrous sheen to those cascading locks. Each morning on holiday you wash your hair and spray it with a leave-in conditioner before throwing it up into a ‘messy’ bun which looks effortlessly chic and sexy on the beach and complements the tan and ontrend bikini to a tee.
The reality:
Your hair is a mess: the roots are so neglected that your hair looks lank and greasy, and the split ends are a lost cause. You phone your hairdresser in a last minute panic but she can’t squeeze you in because “it’s the holiday season, babe… everyone wants beach-ready hair!”. Grrrrrr. You get the kitchen scissors out and hack away yourself. Just the wispy bits that frame your face… It looks a bit wonky but no one will notice when it’s scooped up into a messy bun on the beach. Except the messy bun doesn’t really work out because, upon unpacking at your destination, you realise you remembered to pack seven jars of coconut oil but totally forgot a hair band. The store on the campsite doesn’t sell any and the nearest
chemist is 60km away. For the rest of the holiday you parade through the resort with uneven, greasy hair which keeps getting stuck to your face due to the gallons of coconut oil you slathered on it. To add insult to injury, the harsh Mediterranean sun is highlighting your roots with startling clarity. A sullen yet groomed teenager sneers at you. “It’s baylayage,” you yell at her, “don’t you know anything?” You storm back to your tent and realise your period has started! You cry, you eat an entire bar of Milka and all the Camembert in your cool box before retreating to your bed for some top level sulking. And then you realise that, actually, after a bit of sugar and good old blub you couldn’t give two stuffs about your hair, bikini line or any of that nonsense. Holidays aren’t about working hard at looking good. They are about eating chocolate, drinking wine and having fun. Cheers!
LONDON MILITARY CATCHMENT
This style has the added benefit that, after a long day at the beach, you need only unravel the bun and your hair instantly
falls into a gentle curl. You add a flower - purchased from a friendly market stall holder by your husband on the romantic stroll back from the beach - and, hey presto, your hair is perfectly styled for a romantic evening in the taverna.

MIDLANDS MILITARY CATCHMENT
An Adaptable Mind-set to Meet The Challenges Ahead Hi my name’s Patience Kakitie. I’m a mum, I’m a wife, I’m a fitness instructor and I’m personal trainer. I’m most noted for being a Karate instructor and competitor. I’ve been very successful wining numerous medals at National and International level. And, I’m proud to tell you that I have won 5 World medals for England: 4 x Bronze and 1 x Gold. Well, that’s who I am now. My background was a little different: When I was younger, I worked in a series of typical jobs: service, retail and then Finance. I was taught to work and study hard, in expectation of ‘a good job for life’. I did just that, then the dream was shattered when the bank I was working for collapsed and I was made redundant at age 21. It was an early and (for me) a necessary lesson: Not to limit my earning potential and not to be lazy with my life aspirations. I had to re-think my retirement plan and set about looking for new opportunities. A change in mind-set was needed. I moved to Singapore to support my husband’s career and I landed a great job myself, as a Marketing Manager for a large retailer. Then, my husband’s contract ended and we returned to UK. The life and income that I’d grown used too changed dramatically. We soon started a family like so many new mums, I longed for a full-time income whilst being a full-time mum. I tried to juggle both, but not only were employers offering me a lower salary than I was used to, the cost of childcare wiped out my earnings. Again, I had to review my work/life plan. I re-trained as Personal/Group Fitness Instructor and a Martial Artist. And, the rest you know. My experience of having to reinvent myself is now an increasingly common one, as the notion of job security appears to be in decline. These are just a few of the headlines from the past year: 22/01 Schlumberger reveals 10,000 recent job losses amid oil price slump
24/04 Fears for 11,000 jobs at BHS 07/08 Teachers’ salaries ‘will need to rise in future’ 28/07 Lloyds cuts a further 3,000 jobs and doubles branch closure plan 05/09 Marks and Spencer to cut 525 head office jobs 08/11 M&S to close clothing and home stores in turnaround plan Even more worrying: Household finances at breaking point, says Shelter Housing charity says it is seeing a ‘stream of cases’ of families unable to cope with mounting rent or mortgage payments “Despite recent discussion of an economic recovery, we know that a combination of high housing costs, wage freezes and rising food and energy bills has created a nightmare scenario for many families that is pushing them to breaking point.” And this year: 01/01 Union prepares to ballot staff at BMW Mini Plant in Cowley for strike action Sign up ‘BETRAYED’ workers at Oxford’s Mini plant have threatened to walk out over pension changes that could leave them thousands of pounds out of pocket. At the heart of these headlines, are just ordinary people forced to make difficult career decisions in challenging and uncertain economic times. So what were my options? Given that I wanted • Flexible working hours • Time and resources to take regular breaks • Job security
• To be rewarded for productivity, commitment and loyalty • Good health to enjoy my free time While I love the fitness industry, it’s is fickle and trend-based. Hours can be variable and I have no financial security in the event of illness, injury or holiday. Mine is a zero-hours arrangement. If I don’t work I don’t get paid: but the costs of running my household are fixed. The answer: Team Marketing/ Network Marketing I was introduced by a friend to Forever Living Products, a leading company in the health & wellbeing market place. It was a natural fit for me. I researched the company and was happy that their values were the same as mine. Their products work, they’re ethically sourced and produced, they’re great value for money and they’re renewable: Of course we all want to look good and feel great too! Forever Living is a multi-billion dollar company operating in over 155 countries and is the world’s largest grower, manufacturer and distributor of Aloe Vera. Founded in 1973 and operation in the UK since 1993. The company is cash rich, debt free and underpinned by $1.5bn of assets.
TRUST Outstanding products, backed by a 60-day satisfaction guarantee EXPERIENCE I continue to learn new business skills daily INTEGRITY & ETHICS A proven business model and attainment of the prestigious ‘Investors in People’ award: GOLD standard I continue to love my sport, but I’ve become a professional Network Marketer and ‘Mumpreneur’. I work flexible hours, around an already busy family and working life, and still generate a full time income with some extra to save for a rainy day. I’ve learned new skills and use them to help other people build additional incomes too. My skills are transferable to any industry and transportable to over 155 countries worldwide. If I can do this, YOU CAN DO THIS TOO! I’d like to show you how. I am now an ambassador for Forever Living Products and you can view my profile at:
www.facesofforever.com
I work as independent business owner, in a small team and as part of a larger group. I receive free mentoring and have access to free training tools. Best of all, I decide my own level of income and pay NO commissions. CHECKLIST There are a number of Team Marketing and Network marketing opportunities out there; I’m sure some are good but this one is great! I have found: FRIENDSHIP 1-2-1 Mentorship as well as group training

re you looking for a way to make your wedding really stand out? Perhaps you would simply like an extra flourish to give the photos a unique touch. Or you may want a venue which is a little quirky? Or are you considering going all out with a memorable theme that will make your big day the talk of the town? Here are a few ideas to provide some inspiration to ensure you have an unforgettable celebration.
An historic reception Incorporating the military theme into your wedding plans might not be as easy as it sounds. But if you are keen to go one step further than wearing a uniform to the nuptials and need a stand-out venue which will also provide your guests with a fascinating experience, we have just the place… For the famous Mary Rose Museum in Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard is not just a popular visitor attraction, it is also available as a wedding venue and is licensed to hold ceremonies. If you are looking for something really spectacular, what better way to impress your guests than by having dinner with unparalleled views of the impressive conserved hulls of Henry VIII’s flagship, which sank off the coast of Portsmouth and was raised over 400 years later? Displayed behind a glass case just meters from where she was built, the Mary Rose
will if nothing else provide a fascinating talking point over the wedding breakfast. To fuel the conversation, guests are also given a tour of the museum whilst enjoying a glass of the obligatory wedding bubbly. The evening celebration is held in the Museum’s Admiral’s Gallery, which has access to the bridge balcony and provides a view of the historic dockyard.

A high flying wedding
e ddings Paul Griffiths, head of operations at the museum, said there was no other venue like for such a special occasion. “We are extremely proud to be able to offer exceptional standards of catering and service, surrounded by a unique sense of history and occasion,” he said. The Mary Rose Museum offers a range of wedding deals with dinner packages starting at £110 per person. Its events team work closely with bookers and organisers to ensure the perfect day. Visit www.maryrose.org/venue-hire/weddings/
From one British icon to another… If you don’t have your sea-legs why not try something with wings instead. How about getting married on board a very special aircraft? Brooklands Museum in Surrey offers brides and grooms a fun way to get wed - by walking down the aisle of a Concorde. As well as having the ceremony on board the couple get to reprise the signing of the register in the Concorde’s flight deck - which will certainly ensure your pictures are nothing if not unique. Packages include the option to have champagne and canapés under the wings of the aircraft or a wedding breakfast in one of the historic rooms at the museum or even a marquee in the grounds. The Concorde has room for 32 seated guests, and 28 standing. There is also a video link which allows others to view the ceremony on TV screens in the museum. Prices start at £1,750 for the ceremony and the catering and reception function rooms are extra.

A festival-style wedding Love music festivals? Want to recreate the vibe for your wedding? We’ve found one venue which does this with style and also offers plenty of other quirky additions to make your nuptials memorable. Cliff Barns is the epitome of the country home - but there’s a twist. Set in four acres of land in the Norfolk countryside, this rural retreat provides options for guests to not only sleep beneath the stars in bell tents or teepees but eat food from festival style trucks and dance, after sunset, around a bonfire pit.You can even arrange for a designated tent or teepee to be set up as a chill-out area, or treatment room.
For those who prefer not to brave the British weather there are also wedding packages for indoor ceremonies and celebrations. “The house is a riot of decorative and object d’Art intimate seating areas” says the venue’s publicity material. The décor includes a combination of wild taxidermy, cowhide sofas, Aztec rugs, tartan and vintage floral fabrics and river rock fireplaces. A variety of marquees can also be arranged for larger parties. This venue even provides the option for the bride and groom to have their wedding pictures taken on horseback. Say it with flowers You don’t just have to make a statement on your wedding day with a knockout venue. Often, just adding a flourish to the décor, splashing out on an unconventional cake or applying a themed dress code can create an impact. One way to create a stir at your celebration is by going unconventional with the flowers. What about ordering a themed display? Interflora offered us some fun ideas to provide you with inspiration, including a carnival-themed display which creates an impact with tropical pinks, oranges, yellows, reds, purples and vibrant greens. This is great way to bring the destination wedding
feel to your big day without actually flying your guests halfway across the world. An Interflora spokeswoman offered tips for brides and grooms keen to recreate the look: “To make the most of this theme, don’t be afraid to go big and bold. Use hot, exotic shapes and colours and add soft and romantic touches with shells and other subtler decorations to marry with your theme.”

PICNICS
Forget limp cheese sandwiches and sweaty sausage rolls - it’s time to say hello to the new must try recipes for al fresco eating that will change the way you picnic forever! Dig out your hamper and get ready to make a portable gourmet feast that you can enjoy anywhere...
ROSE, LEMON & STRAWBERRY
S
Infused Water
ubtle and sweet, this refreshing drink is easy to make and beautiful enjoyed on a hot summer’s day.You can make this in a big jug or put a few ingredients into individual bottles to seal up and enjoy that way.You could make it in a large mason jar and take a sieve to strain the liquid through to avoid getting any petals or fruit in your glass. As with most of these recipes you can switch up the ingredients to suit your taste; another of our favourites was lime, mint and raspberry - yum! Ingredients A handful of strawberries, halved Rose petals (pesticide-free) 1 lemon, sliced into wedges (or for a stronger flavour, the juice a lemon) Water
58
Just for Her issue 13 2017.indd 58
1. Fill your bottles or a large jug with water and add in a few of each ingredient. 2. Leave for at least 3 hours to infuse, preferably overnight in the fridge.

THE PICNIC
Loaf
true sandwich extravaganza and absolutely great for picnics as it crams so many ingredients into one easy to carry package. It’s best made the night before so the bread soaks up all the wonderful flavours. Wrap well in cling film or tin foil to keep it fresh and place in the fridge until you’re ready to leave. The ingredients in this are easily swapped so it can be changed to suit any taste - you could add olives, tomatoes or sliced egg - the combinations are endless!
Ingredients: 1 Large Cob Loaf 2 tbsp Pesto – red or green is fine 1 garlic clove cut in half For the filling: 2 Courgettes, sliced lengthways 2 red and 2 yellow bell peppers, deseeded and thickly sliced 2 tbsp olive oil 200g cheese, mozzarella, cheddar, or a softrind, whatever you fancy 200g sliced meats – ham, chicken or beef work great A large handful of salad leaves Fresh basil leaves Salt and pepper
1. Cut the top off the cob loaf and put to one side for later. Carefully hollow out the middle of the loaf, but don’t leave the sides too thin. 2. Toss the courgettes and peppers in the olive oil and place on a pre heated griddle until they are lightly charred and softened. This will take 5-6 mins. Leave them to cool on some kitchen roll to soak up the excess oil. 3. Taking the halved garlic clove, rub it all over the inside of the hollowed cob before taking a spoon and spreading the pesto all around the inside walls and under the lid. 4. Slice the cheese and season the courgette and peppers well with salt and pepper. Start layering your ingredients inside the cob right up to the top. Finish it at the top with a layer of the fresh basil. 5. Wrap tightly in cling film or tin foil to keep it fresh and leave it for at least a few hours, preferably overnight in the fridge, with a heavy book or plate on top to squish it down and fuse the flavours together. Serve by slicing like a pie and enjoy!

Rainbow Wraps
hese are easy to make, easy to store and easy to share – which makes them picnic perfect! Kids love how colourful they are but you can switch up the ingredients to just about anything. You could go for a BLT version, falafel and veggie, salmon and cream cheese or even hoisin duck. Here is the recipe for our favourite, vegetable and chicken.
Ingredients: Large tortilla wraps Carrots – sliced thinly lengthways Red and yellow peppers – sliced lengthways Shredded purple cabbage Basil leaves Cooked roast chicken pieces Mayo, hummus or salad cream
Just for Her issue 13 2017.indd 59
1. Take your tortilla and lay it flat on the work surface. Spread lightly with mayo, hummus or other sauce of your choice and slice up your veg. It’s best to keep the veg long so it doesn’t fall out. Arrange the ingredients thinly in rows on top keeping about 2 inches free of ingredients except sauce, this will keep it all held together. 2. Roll your tortilla tightly together and slice into bitesize pieces. 59

Hasselback TOMATO CAPRESE SALAD
W
e love these for a picnic idea, it’s a perfect little side salad in one compact, easy-to-carry package. They go well with picnic staples such as cold meats, sausage rolls and quiche and look and taste great. You can pre-assemble the tomatoes and take the balsamic reduction to drizzle over when you’re ready to eat. Ingredients: Roma tomatoes – or any other variety that are large enough Fresh block of Mozzarella cheese Large basil leaves Balsamic vinegar Pinch of sea salt and fresh ground pepper 1. Thinly slice your tomatoes, being careful not to go through to the bottom. 2. Slice up the mozzarella and then cut each slice into semi circles 3. Layer a wedge of mozzarella and a basil leaf between each slice of the tomato 4. Bring your balsamic vinegar to the boil slowly until it thickens. You can then put this in a jar to use later or drizzle over immediately to serve.
BANOFFEE PIE
T
in a Jar
hese go great in mason jars or large jam jars, and the beauty is they’re portable and mess free! There are heaps of variations online for different cakes and puddings in jars if Banoffee Pie isn’t your thing, Eton Mess, Cheesecake and Trifles to name a few!
Ingredients 10 digestive biscuits 70g butter 1 tin carnation caramel 1 /2 tsp salt 2 bananas 300ml double cream 1 tsp vanilla extract
1. Using a freezer bag and a rolling pin, bash the digestives into crumbs. 2. Melt the butter and stir in the biscuit crumbs. 3. Empty your tin of caramel into a bowl and add the salt. Mix until smooth. 4. Slice up the bananas and whip the cream up with the vanilla extract until stiff peaks form. 5. Begin spooning 2-3 spoonfuls of the biscuit mixture into the bottom of the jars. 6. SUPER EASY
T
Lemon Bars
hese are wonderful eaten fresh on a summer’s afternoon, they are the perfect mix of sweet & zesty and incredibly moreish! As the title suggests they are so simple to whip up and are great for a last minute treat!
Ingredients 200g plain flour 75g icing sugar 175g butter, softened For the filling 3 eggs 300g caster sugar 3 tablespoons plain flour 4 tablespoons lemon juice 5 tablespoons icing sugar, to decorate 1. Preheat your oven to 190C/Gas Mark 5 and grease a 23x33cm baking tin. 2. Combine the base ingredients of the flour, icing sugar and butter into a soft dough and pat into the bottom of the tin. 3. Bake for 20 minutes until slightly golden. Whilst this is baking whisk together the eggs, caster sugar, lemon juice and the 3 tablespoons of flour until frothy. Pour over the hot base and pop back into the oven for 25-30 mins or until light golden-brown. 4. Cool on a wire rack and lightly dust with icing sugar before slicing up into bars.
Top Picnic Tips..! * The night before packing up your picnic, add a few bottles of water to the freezer. They will double up as ice packs to keep your food cool and as a refreshing drink as they melt on a hot day! Frozen grapes can also give your drinks a fruity twist in exchange for ice cubes! * Take an old shower curtain to place under the blanket if the ground may be a bit damp – it will save your blanket getting soggy! * Put upside down cake cases over the top of glasses and poke a straw through the middle to keep the bugs out of your beverage. You can also poke lolly sticks through the bottom of cake cases to stop little fingers getting sticky after a trip to the ice cream van! * You can use empty tic tac boxes to take any seasoning you might need without it spilling into the basket. * Instead of taking whole bottles of condiments with you, use a muffin tray as a serving dish and wrap tightly with clingfilm before packing. * Sprinkling talc or cinnamon around your blanket will deter ants, and filling the bottom of a plastic bottle with holes in the top with sugary water and hanging it near your picnic spot will attract wasps and keep them away from your food.

5 pairs
of tickets to give away!
Written by the award-winning actress Carol Harrison, All or Nothing tells the electrifying yet bittersweet tale of Kenney Jones, Ian McLagan, Ronnie Lane and Steve Marriott; four charismatic young kids from East London with humour, attitude, passion and above all talent. They became The Small Faces and were rocketed into the big time, only to discover the path to fantastic success is paved with exploitation, betrayal and ultimately tragedy. All or Nothing celebrates the unique sound of the iconic Mod band. The musical is packed full of all the timeless hits, including the brilliant Whatcha Gonna Do About It, Tin Soldier, Lazy Sunday, Here Comes the Nice, Itchycoo Park and of course All or Nothing. In 1964, a new phenomenon exploded on to the dingy British streets. It was the
The sharpest Mod of all was known as a ‘face’. The Small Faces encapsulated all that is Mod, a unique blend of taste and testosterone, neat, clothes obsessed, and streetwise. But these cult sophisticates shared another passion, their dedication to ‘Rhythm and Blues.’ essence of all that was cool. It was Mod. Mods stuck two fingers up at the classridden society and its dull redundant culture. They were working-class free spirits who rode sexy streamlined Italian Vespas or Lambrettas.

ENJOY A SUMMER OF MUSIC AT BRITAIN’S BIGGEST FESTIVALS Indie band, Radiohead, were recently revealed as one of the headliners of Britain’s most-famous musical festival, Glastonbury. Tickets for Glastonbury sell out extremely quickly, but Britain hosts hundreds of music festivals all year round, with something to choose from almost every weekend of the summer. Why not take a trip to one of the following…?
Latitude, Suffolk, East England: 13 - 16 July 2017 A family friendly festival in the east of England that has established itself as one of the classic festivals of the summer, with music, comedy and an excellent children’s arena. It’s also a very green festival, based in idyllic Suffolk surroundings, famously featuring sheep specially dyed all the colours of the rainbow. 2016’s line-up saw The Maccabees and New Order hit the Obelisk Arena, as well as plenty of other musical magic across the super-scenic festival site. Getting there: Halesworth is the nearest train station. Trains take around two hours from London and there are festival buses to take you to the site.
Blues on the Bay, Warrenpoint, Northern Ireland: 2017 dates TBC (usually May) This five-day international blues and jazz music festival in Warrenpoint, Northern Ireland, is one of Europe’s leading blues festivals with jam sessions and workshops. Van Morrison headlined in 2015 and played two special gigs in 2016; 2017 will be the event’s 19th anniversary. Getting there: Warrenpoint, a lovely seaside town close to the border with the rest of Ireland, is best reached by car from Belfast; it takes about an hour.
Isle of Wight Festival, South-East England: 8 - 11 June 2017 The Isle of Wight has great musical heritage stretching back to Bob Dylan (1969) and Jimi Hendrix (1970). 2016 saw The Who, Queen + Adam Lambert, Stereophonics and Faithless hit the stage. Getting there: a train from London Waterloo to Portsmouth or Southampton takes around 90 minutes. From either port there are regular ferries to the Isle of Wight.
Womad, Wiltshire, South-West England: 27 - 30 July 2017 The world comes to Wiltshire, south west England, for three glorious days of music, parades, amazing food and much more (2016’s programme featured a Physics Pavilion, for the more cerebral festivalgoer). In 2016 the global festival put on 200 performances by 90 artists from 49 countries, spanning Russian throat singers to New Orleans brass bands, the ‘screaming eagle of soul’ Charles Bradley to the all-girl Malian supergroup Les Amazones d’Afrique. Getting there: Charlton Park is close to Chippenham station, which is just over an hour from London by rail.
Download Festival, Leicestershire, England: 9 - 11 June 2017 Download Festival is the most popular British summer rock and heavy metal festival, held annually at Donington Park in, since 2003. Download Festival has hosted some of the genres’ biggest names, including Saxon, Black Sabbath, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Motörhead, Aerosmith, AC/DC, Def Leppard, Kiss, Judas Priest, Motley Crue, Journey, ZZ Top, Whitesnake, Thin Lizzy, and Guns N’ Roses. 70
Just for Her issue 13 2017.indd 70
Getting there: The mainline railway stations are East Midlands Parkway, Derby, Nottingham and Loughborough. Trains take about two hours from London and Donington Park is also well served by public transport and taxi services from these stations. East Midlands International Airport is only two and a half miles away and has comprehensive domestic and European flight schedules.
30/03/2017 11:59
HebCelt, Isle of Lewis, Scotland:
Vibes
19 - 22 July 2017 The Hebridean Celtic Festival is a multi-venue event on the island of Lewis: the two main locations are the An Lanntair arts centre and the grounds of Lews Castle. FESTIVAL Vibes
V Festival, Essex and Staffordshire, England:
Wilderness, Oxfordshire, England: 3 - 6 August 2017 A fantastical festival with a difference set in ancient parkland in the Oxfordshire countryside (sister festival to the Secret Garden Party in Cambridgeshire). It’s for those who want more than music: you can catch theatre, debates, horse riding, a spa and gourmet food. In 2016 Robert Plant & The Sensational Space Shifters and The Flaming Lips graced the musical stages, while Raymond Blanc and Skye Gyngell were two of the chefs providing long-table banquets. Getting there: There’s a direct train to the village of Charlbury from London which takes around one hour 15 minutes.
19 and 20 August 2017 One of the year’s most popular events and always attracting big commercial names to two different sites over one weekend, Hylands Park in Chelmsford, Essex, southeast England and Weston Park in south Staffordshire, in England’s Midlands region. 2017’s line-up has yet to be announced but should attract big names like previous years, including Justin Bieber, Rihanna, Beyoncé, Kings of Leon, Stereophonics, Calvin Harris and more. Getting there: Chelmsford is a 30 minute train ride from London. Weston Park is close to Stafford and Wolverhampton train stations, which are both just under two hours from London.
Belsonic, Belfast, Northern Ireland:
Green Man, Brecon Beacons, south Wales: 17 - 20 August 2017 Taking place in the gorgeous Brecon Beacons National Park, Green Man has become a highlight of the summer since its inception in 2003. The event presents a live soundtrack to four days and nights of festival magic located among the otherworldly Black Mountains. The 2016 line-up included Belle & Sebastian, James Blake and Laura Marling. There’s also Green Man Rising for budding musicians, so bring along your guitar! Getting there: Green Man recommends travelling by coach to the festival, where you are dropped off directly at the site; alternatively, the closest train station is Abergavenny and there are shuttle buses from there. Abergavenny is approximately two hours 15 minutes from London.
dates TBC This outdoor music festival has taken place in August at the Custom House Square in Belfast, Northern Ireland, since 2008, but recently moved to the impressive Titanic Belfast. There were two editions of the festival in 2016, with Chemical Brothers, Tiësto, Faithless and more in June, and The Corrs, Madness and Fatboy Slim in August. Getting there: There are regular flights to Belfast from London and other cities.
Reading & Leeds Festival, England: 25 - 27 August 2017 Britain’s premier rock music festival featuring global acts uniquely performing at both locations over three days allowing for 100,000 revellers at Reading and more than 80,000 at Leeds to experience global rock superstars. 2016 saw Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Biffy Clyro on their line-ups. Getting there: Reading is 25 minutes from London by train and it takes just over two hours to reach Leeds by train.

Victorious Festival, Portsmouth, South England: 25 - 27 August 2017 Manic Street Preachers, Annie Mac and Emmy The Great all headlined the Victorious Festival in the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard on the south coast of England last year so expect more big acts for 2017. This urban festival is relaxed, with deckchairs, Astroturf, street entertainers and a fun Friday night opening party in the pipeline. Getting there: it takes just over one hour 30 minutes to reach Portsmouth by train from London.
End of the Road Festival, Dorset, South England: 31 August - 3 September 2017 Beautiful surroundings for a mainly folk, Americana and psych/alternative rock lineup; 2016’s event welcomed acts including Joanna Newsom, Bat for Lashes, Devendra Banhart and Cat Power. The festival takes place at Larmer Tree Gardens in north Dorset. Getting there: The nearest train station is Salisbury; trains from London take around one hour 30 minutes and then there is a shuttle bus.
Bestival, Isle of Wight, South-East England: 7 - 10 September 2017 Four days of live music and premier league DJs, Bestival is one of Britain’s most colourful festivals, with dressing up encouraged. From the most original boutique campsite experience to the Bollywood Cocktail Bar, fancy dress en masse and even a Roller Disco, it’s this kind of uniqueness that makes Bestival a world of discovery on the Isle of Wight. 2016 saw The Cure, Major Lazer, Sean Paul, Hot Chip and Diplo take the stage. Getting there: a train from London Waterloo to Portsmouth or Southampton takes around 90 minutes. From either port there are regular ferries to the Isle of Wight.
Festival Number 6, Portmeirion, North Wales: 7 - 10 September 2017 Stunningly located, Festival No. 6 takes place in Portmeirion Village (the festival’s name is an insider reference for those who’ve seen cult 60s TV show The Prisoner, which was filmed there). As well as big name music acts there’s entertainment of all kinds, from carnivals to comedians, as well as delicious street food to fuel the party. Not a camping fan? There’s a plush hotel in the village, so you don’t have to assemble your festival outfit in a tent! Getting there: Past festivals have featured a dedicated No. 6 Express train to Bangor from Crewe (approximately one hour 30 minutes from London), on which there are surprises and freebies given to guests to get the party started. Portmeirion is approximately two hours by road from Liverpool

Tarot Card Readings in Kent My readings only ever take place face to face, so I will travel to you. It is the connection between the cards, the reader and the client that will give the most accurate reading. You don’t have to be someone who believes in tarot to benefit from a reading, usually the cards will make a believer out of you. No one has really been able to explain why the cards are able to divine the future. I also offer protection spells. These spells come in all kinds of shapes and sizes and how it’s approached will depend on the individual’s situation.

FIX THE FELLS
he Cumbrian Challenge is Walking With The Wounded’s fun and testing, flagship annual fundraising event in the Lake District for teams of four. Every team that takes part supports another wounded veteran back into work and independence. Teams can tackle one of three routes, “Peak” (1 peak, 16km), “Tough” (3 peaks, 23km), and “Tougher” (4 peaks, 29km). The event, presented by BAE Systems, brings more than 600 people to the Lake District every year in aid of vulnerable veterans. As part of being a responsible event organiser Walking With The Wounded makes a contribution to Fix the Fells in recognition of the impact the event has on the Lake District paths which get used. Joanne Backshall from Fix the Fells, which is a partnership project led by the National Trust and the Lake District National Park said: “We are
very grateful to Walking With The Wounded for pledging a donation to fix the Fells from their popular 2017 Cumbrian Challenge event. It is wonderful that they raise so much for their own excellent cause but also recognise their event has an impact on the Lakeland fells and make a contribution towards their upkeep. This is a perfect example of responsible fundraising and really helps Fix the Fells keep the fell paths repaired and maintained. We are undertaking work on some of the many paths around Grasmere this year and next, particularly following the damage caused by the December 2015 floods. Our thanks go to all the organisers of this event.”
the local economy and raises a serious sum for wounded veterans we are conscious of our environmental impact and are always looking at ways to minimize this by working with local partners like Fix the Fells.”
Andy Sloan, Events Manager, Walking With The Wounded, said: “Not everyone can climb a mountain so we are always looking at ways to make our events accessible to all. Arqiva’s technology will allow friends and family to join in the views and sense of achievement in scaling one of the UK’s iconic summits. Whether the weather will play ball is anyone’s guess but this will hopefully engage a lot more people in the event and its outcomes, supporting vulnerable veterans.”
To celebrate the fifth year of the event, participants brave enough to take on the Tough and Tougher courses will head for ‘Hel’ and back, conquering Helvellyn - at 950m the third highest point in England and the Lake District behind Scafell Pike and Sca Fell.
Walking with the Wounded’s Partnership and Events Manager, Andy Sloan said: “The Cumbrian Challenge is an important event for us and is growing year on year thanks to the phenomenal support of our participants. While the event brings significant business to Grasmere and

er Majesty The Queen has given permission for a unique new walking challenge at Balmoral Castle to mark Armed Forces Day on June 24. The ‘Balmoral Challenge,’ organised by military charity Walking With The Wounded, will see up to 100 teams of four compete over one of three mountainous routes on HM The Queen’s estate in the Cairngorm National Park - with each team supporting a vulnerable veteran to regain their independence and reintegrate into society.
MARK ARMED FORCES DAY AT BALMORAL
Teams will meet and compete against the charity’s beneficiaries from across Scotland and hear first-hand how they have overcome physical, mental and social injuries such as homelessness to get back into work and independence. Duncan Slater from Muir of Ord near Inverness lost both his legs serving in Afghanistan when his vehicle hit an IED. He recovered to become the first double leg amputee to ski to the South Pole as part of WWTW’s South Pole Allied Challenge in 2013 and helped recce the routes for the Balmoral Challenge ahead of its launch – challenging others to get involved. He said: “The area is stunning and finishing in front of the castle is very special. It will be a great way for people to show their support for our veterans and have a really memorable experience at the same time.
Everyone has their own challenges and fitness levels but it’s important people have a goal to work towards and this will be a fun one to take on as a team.” The challenge celebrates the history of the estate with the three routes making the most of the historical landmarks which dot the map. It will include a ‘big’ route of 33km which climbs over three Munros, a ‘thinking’ route calling on teams to think strategically and pick up as many points as they

can within a set time limit and a ‘family’ route for over 12s in the forests above the castle. Military Wives Choir A large Military Wives choir, from Kinloss, will serenade the teams of walkers at Balmoral, the evening before they set off. Balmoral Estate Factor, Richard Gledson, said: “We are delighted to be working with Walking With The Wounded on what will be an exciting new event helping to raise funds to support our wounded servicemen and women. We look forward to welcoming all the participants to Balmoral and to getting our very own Team Balmoral into training!” Walking With The Wounded CEO and Co-Founder Ed Parker said: “We are
very honoured to have this wonderful opportunity. Our programmes have expanded to support more and more Scottish veterans and we work in partnership with a number of other military charities in Scotland. We hope this challenge will inspire more people to come and meet our beneficiaries, be inspired by their determination despite adversity and to test themselves and their teams in the hills for a very worthy cause, helping us raise a significant sum of money to further expand the services we offer.” Entries for the Balmoral Challenge are now open. For more information on the challenge, or to sign up, please go to www.wwtw.org.uk Leading UK fund manager Artemis is the presenting partner of the Balmoral Challenge. Managing Director of Artemis, Dick Turpin, said: “The team at Artemis is very proud to support this exciting new event at such a beautiful and prestigious location. We will be encouraging our staff and clients into the hills to challenge themselves alongside the inspiring veterans that the event supports, helping to make it a firm success.”

CONTRIBUTION
“By veterans, for veterans”
S
urf Action was established in Cornwall in 2009 and is now a registered Charity (number 1140191). An award winning and pioneering project, Surf Action is dedicated to the Armed forces community and their families, especially those affected by PTSD and other mental health conditions and physical injuries or those struggling to re-adjust to civilian life. Surf Action also supports those who have served or are serving in the ‘bluelight’ emergency services. By making use of the stunning coastal environment and offering holistic support which takes into account the practical, social and psychological difficulties which some veterans can experience, we do not seek to replicate the valuable work carried
out by existing military organisations and charities, but to complement, signpost to, and work with them to fill the gaps identified by the veterans who come to us. PhD research recently carried out with Loughborough University has validated the Surf Action model and significantly extended previous knowledge on physical activity, military veterans and PTSD by highlighting how nature-based physical activity – encapsulated in the conceptual notion of the “Blue Gym” – can significantly promote well-being among military veterans. Through surfing, Surf Action, which receives funding from the Big Lottery, Armed Forces Covenant has helped more than 580 veterans since it launched and works with other organizations including the NHS, the Royal British Legion and Combat Stress.
The charity Surf Action takes groups of serving personnel and veterans including amputees and those suffering from the effects of post traumatic stress disorder surfing every week at multiple sites around Cornwall. Families are also included with water sports offering the chance for parents to spend quality time with their children. Children suffer from deployment issues or one parent family issues when they go away. If their mum or dad comes back with psychological injuries or physical injuries it’s important to knit the family together. It allows them to understand what’s going on and to re-bond with mum and dad. It’s also important for spouses to understand the things that their partner has gone through. Surf Action, in association with the Royal British Legion, are offering 8, 8 week Service Children Activity Courses each year.

For partners in the military community, we understand that sometimes service life can be tough. Service families are often located far from extended family, which makes it almost impossible for the partner to build or maintain the friendships and relationships that might help to sustain them when their loved one is deployed away from home or if they are new to service life. Surf Action recognises that it is essential that the partner can find a healthy outlet for their own stress because their batteries need re-charging too. The better the partners can care for themselves the better they will be able to care for the rest of their family.

opportunity for you to have an all too rare couple of hours away from the family and the time to concentrate on yourself and your own wellbeing within a supportive group of fellow partners and to learn coping strategies.
Surf Action is a military charity dedicated to supporting serving and ex-serving members of the Armed Forces and their families who suffer the effects of PTSD, physical injury or have difficulty re-adjusting to civilian life.

East Anglian Game Country Fair April 22nd and 23rd 2017
T
he East Anglian Game & Country Fair will take place on Saturday 22nd & Sunday 23rd April 2017, at the beautiful new venue of Euston Estate, just off the A11 near Thetford, by kind permission of The Duke and Duchess of Grafton. “My family and I are delighted that Euston Estate is hosting the East Anglian Game and Country Fair for the first time, as this popular event returns for its 14th year. I would like to welcome all the officials, sponsors, exhibitors and the public to what I hope will be a very enjoyable two days. The park and grounds offer a particularly attractive setting for events of this kind and all the diverse activities on offer from clay shooting to dog shows, and archery to forestry displays, make it a great day out for the whole family. With something for everyone, we hope that the Fair continues to grow from strength to strength, as it showcases the best in country pursuits.”
Henry FitzRoy, 12th Duke of Grafton Euston Hall is steeped in history and provides a beautiful backdrop to the already established events on the Estate. Euston Estate provides a more central location for The East Anglian Game & Country Fair, only 30 minutes from Norwich on the newly dualled A11 near Elveden, with excellent access to Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Essex. This beautiful venue lends itself to a game and country fair setting, along with offering the opportunity to further evolve and develop the show, with the space and freedom to invite new attractions and
events, whilst ensuring that the popular events that we have always enjoyed remain. We have a number of new equestrian attractions confirmed for the 2017 Game & Country Fair. The Mounted Games Association of Great Britain will be holding the most exciting and exhilarating display competitions in the Main Arena. Riders in teams, complete short relay style races against each other demonstrating speed, accuracy and horsemanship. Races are a mix of turns, intricate hand overs, equipment collections and placements, vaulting on and off the horse and of course - all at gallop! Members of the audience are invited to support their local team as points are awarded for each game, giving a competitive edge to the entertainment. See the exciting, fast and skillful British Scurry & Trials Driving Championships in the Main Arena at this year’s East Anglian Game & Country Fair. Watch ponies of all shapes and sizes take on a timed obstacle course made from cones, temporary barriers, flags arches and ramps all against the clock. Speed, agility and bravery are all required! encouraged to spur on the competitors and provides great entertainment for all the family. This year we are excited to welcome Gary Witheford to the show. He is often referred to as a horse whisperer, others call him ‘the magic man’, but Gary Witheford, the man who breaks horses in less than half an hour, prefers to call himself a ‘horseman’. As the first man to break in zebras, Gary and his son, Craig, work with horses who present all sorts of problems. These range from refusing to load onto horseboxes, ridden issues such as bolting, bucking, rearing or napping, fear of traffic, farrier or vet phobias and many other challenges faced by horse owners from all disciplines, be it happy hackers or competition horses. In addition to this they specialize in working with racehorses who have a range of issues, most notably those with issues when being loaded into starting stalls. The most notable of his racing successes to date was Sea The Stars for Irish trainer John Oxx and the mighty Kingman for John Gosden. Gary’s expertise in dealing with horses spans over 30 years and he has dealt with many eventers and competition horses.
speak for themselves. It’s all about trust and getting them to think ‘You’re my leader and I will follow you’. It just proves to me that the way I handle horses has to work. I have great respect for the owners, riders and trainers that I work with and totally appreciate the trust they place in me. With the increased focus on welfare for horses I hope that by working as a team we can all make things better for the horses, handlers and riders”. See the ‘magic man’ in action in the Round Horse Pen at this year’s Game & Country Fair. Not to be missed! We are delighted to welcome Sion Davies Farrier Services to the Game & Country Fair. Sion passed his diploma in 1994 and covers all types of Farriery. His expert skills are sought after in many countries which takes him around the world. He is a member of Worshipful Company of Farriers and his craft has also gained him the prestigious award, Freedom of The City of London. Sion specialises in working with foals, limbs and hoof deformities whilst continuing to work with them throughout
their years. Sion also enjoys competitions and has successfully competed worldwide including the world championships in Canada. Sion shares his passion and skills with his two other Farriers and his three apprentices. A well shod horse is the result of cooperation between the horse owner the farrier... and the horse. The farrier brings to the job the skill and knowledge acquired through a lengthy apprenticeship, intensive college and training and a continuing accumulation of experience. The horse will be better able to co-operate if used to handling, so that it will stand quietly whilst the feet are picked up, trimmed and/or shod. Proper feeding and continuing foot care picking out the feet helps build strong horn which makes good farriery easier. Sion will be bringing his forge to the Game & Country Fair and will be showing the art of making shoes from scratch. See Sion and his team near the Round Horse Pen. continues over page >>
As Gary explains, horses don’t really want to get into a fight and by working them using pressure and release, they quickly learn to look at you as a leader. “The less pressure there is the more the horse will follow you. It’s the herd instinct. Horses are flight animals, whether they are thoroughbreds, ponies or shire horses so you’ve got to go through their thoughts and go back to basics.’’ As the ‘magic man’ says “I like to think I let my horses do the talking and let the results Gary Witheford

Teams take on the clock around a course of gates, set to challenge the best boarders and horse riders, from long straights into sweeping bends and ninety degree turns. New board technology has meant that board riders can get more grips in the corners, but as the track gets scrubbed out, you will still see them power sliding round the bends kicking up dust like a rally car. This part of the sport has become so technical that board set-up, and even tyre choice has become critical. The teams push their boards to the limit as they fight it out, trying to shave 100ths of a second off their times. As will always happen, when sportsmen push themselves and their equipment to the limit, sometimes they find the edge. Crashes are frequent, - with the teams’ motto seeming to be “we will not win by going slower” an absolute mustsee spectacle. You will not be able to take your eyes off it, as teams achieving already unbelievable speeds, get faster with each race. The Mid-Norfolk Gundog Club has been providing its members with training and competitions for 30 years. The demonstrations illustrate the stages of training for Spaniels and Retrievers as they are prepared to become working gundogs. Trained gundogs have a vital role in any form of responsibly conducted game shooting. In the Main Ring, the roles and work of Spaniels and Retrievers are demonstrated in the context of the shooting field. Mid Norfolk Gun Dog Club will be running the Gun Dog Scurry competitions and a Team Gundog Working Test - a competition for trained gundogs that simulates the problems the dogs will encounter when working. The competition, introduced to the East Anglian Game and Fair 4 years ago, is an ‘Open’ Country
standard competition for teams of three experienced dogs and handlers representing clubs and societies from across East Anglia and takes place over both days of the fair. Expect and enjoy first class work and a keen but friendly competition from some of the best gundogs and handlers in the region. Whether you are a practicing falconer, nature enthusiast or not the Falconry Village is sure to keep you entertained. There will be mini events going on all day in the arena, lure swinging competitions and talks on hunting plus several stands to browse along with expert advice from falconers. Ye Olde Redtail Falconry Display brings the ancient art of Falconry to the modern age, with a comprehensive and thrilling display, that is guaranteed to thrill audiences of all ages.
Watch it, be amazed, and join in. Ray and Wendy Aliker have been giving professional displays for nearly thirty years and in that time, have built up a reputation for giving one of the most sought after and exciting displays on the indoor and outdoor circuit. Filled with audience participation, the display shows the natural attributes and abilities of the birds, how they live, fly and hunt in the wild. The display is packed with excitement and surprises - not to be missed! The Forestry Village hosts ‘The East of England Cutters & Climbers Competition’ and Pole Climbing Competitions. The forestry arena will be a buzz of activity with chainsaw carvings, felling demonstrations, tree climbing and pole climbing competitions. Tree workers from around the UK will be competing at this rare opportunity to see a working forestry village. If Bear Grylls is your thing then Woodland Ways Bushcraft & Survival will be demonstrating their vast knowledge of bushcraft & survival techniques. There will be opportunities throughout the day to get ‘hands on’ and learn some skills for yourself. They will also be running ‘Pigeon Plucking’ competitions on their stand over the weekend. Find out how quickly you can prepare a pigeon for the table without using a knife. Our Game Fair Country Kitchen has a great new line up with a variety of cookery workshops and demonstrations taking place over the weekend from a selection of local chefs, including Celebrity Chef Chris Coubrough, Arthur Howell, James Conway, Andy Snowling, Justin Kett, Rachel Green, plus many more. The Cookery Theatre is housed in the centre of the busy Food Hall where you will find a wide variety of

exhibitors from Norfolk and across the UK bringing unusual and mouth watering food and drink to the show for our visitors to sample, enjoy and purchase. Once again the Educational Zone will be showcasing some of the best Independent schools from across the region. This large marquee gives visitors a unique opportunity to meet some of the staff and pupils from these schools and discuss their child’s education in a friendly and informal environment.Visitors are able to meet representatives from the schools themselves and explore all that these schools have to offer in a relaxed setting giving a valuable insight into the vast range of experiences that children will be able to expect if they were to join these schools in the future. There are over 350 shopping stands with a wide variety of products from fashion and footwear to gun makers, eco products, fishing products and home improvements. Plus, craft halls and gift marquees. The
Dog & Duck onsite pub will be serving a great selection of local beers and drinks throughout the weekend, and will be hosting live music both during the day and on the Saturday evening. Children of all ages will be able to take part in countryside activities and meet several animals, including alpacas and enjoy donkey rides. There will also be a number of traditional craft demonstrations and activities taking place across the weekend to entertain all ages. 3. Cycling One of the best ways to sight see in Jaipur is undoubtedly by bicycle. Hire some cycles or join a cycling tour where a knowledgeable guide will take you through the streets and show you the monuments, stop off to try the street food and feel the pulse of the Pink City as you cycle through the busy streets. Various cycle tour companies offer different and bespoke experiences and it’s well worth checking out what each one has to offer.

4. Take a home cooking class If Indian cuisine is one of the things that brought you to India in the first place then why not book yourself onto an evening cooking class and take home some of the fantastic skills involved in making delicious traditional Indian food. Most classes available include pick up and drop off from and to your hotel, all ingredients and a wealth of knowledge to be learnt through a fun cookery class that can be enjoyed by the whole family. Most classes offer different menus to try and last approximately 2 and a half to three hours and that includes making and eating your meal. A must for any foodie!
Popularly known as The Pink City due to its magnificent blushedpink forts and palaces, Jaipur is the vibrant capital of India’s Rajasthan state. Known for its broad avenues and spacious gardens, Jaipur is steeped in history and has lots of secrets to discover…
F
rom bustling bazaars, amazing architecture, stunning wildlife experiences and a variety of festivals held throughout the year there is no shortage of things to do and see in Jaipur. The people of Jaipur are known for being warm and welcoming and travellers often speak of how they go out of their way for you to experience the culture of the city. You can book a tour from one of the many tour companies available for an in depth discovery of the city with a knowledgeable tour guide or simply take a walk through the old town and make your own adventure. Jaipur is famous for its art, handicrafts and textiles and you can’t miss experiencing a shopping spree like no other with a walk through the bazaar to test your haggling skills! When night falls the city does anything but sleep. With such a variety of entertainment to choose from it’s hard to know whether to go for a night of dancing and drinks in one of the many clubs, go to see a movie at any time of the night in one of the 24 hours cinemas, watch a classical Indian play at a theatre or find somewhere to see some traditional Indian dance performances.
Jaipur Top Ten 1. Visit City Palace In the very centre of the old city stands the City Palace. A palace complex with buildings dating from the early 20th century, it is made up of courtyards, gardens & buildings. Its striking architecture and history make it a great place to visit if you want to step back in time. The price of admission includes 2 day entry and access to Royal Gaitor, the royal cenotaphs that house Jaipurs ruling family mausoleums. 2. Take a Balloon Ride If you’re looking for a different way to view the city, try from above! A balloon ride will take you high above the city to view various locations such as City Palace, Jantar Mantar, Jal Mahal and many others. A wonderful trip for romantics and adventurers alike and it is sure to leave you with some great memories and simply stunning photographs.

5. Try the Street Food Whilst we’re talking of food, no trip to Jaipur would be complete without sampling the amazing street food on offer. It’s hard to walk down a road without being tantalised by the smell of delicious Indian cuisine being cooked on every corner. From samosas, chicken tikka, lassi and countless ice cream parlours to traditional tea and sheesha bars, there is so much to try and wrap your taste buds around.
6. The Eleday Experience Eleday is the perfect way to get up close and personal with Elephants in India, by spending the day taking care of them. Set up years ago by Pushpendra Shekhawat who wanted to create a sanctuary for these magnificent creatures, you can feed, bathe and look after an elephant for the day. Packages also include your food and drink for the day and you have the option of a taking a bareback ride on your elephant where there are lots of photo opportunities! 7. Visit the Museums Jaipur is full of history and its many museums are the perfect place to learn all about it. One of the oldest museums in Jaipur is the Albert Hall Museum, which is also known as Government Central Museum and was built by Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh II in 1868. Boasting IndoSaracenic architecture, the design is quite similar to the Victoria and Albert museum in London with a vast collection of Detail of decorated gateway. Amber Fort, Jaipur

artefacts. Miniature paintings, tribal costumes, jewellery, weapons, clay sculptures, metal and ivory ware, ceramics, musical instruments and marble statues are on display. Other museums in the city preserve the cities traditional art work, the more contemporary Gallery Artchill which opened in 1994 houses more modern works and the Alice Garg National Seashells Museum is home to 3000, you guessed it, seashells! 8. Ride on a Rickshaw Rickshaws are an easy and inexpensive way to travel short distances through the city and are part of any India experience. Cycle or fuel operated, it’s advisable to agree on the fee for the journey before you set off to avoid any confusion or being overcharged!
Monkey in Galtaji Temple, Jaipur
9. Visit the Monkey Temple Galtaji is an ancient Hindu pilgrimage site in the town of Khania –Balaji which is 10km away from Jaipur. The site is the home to a series of temples built in the hills that surround the Pink City. The Ramgopalji Temple is commonly reffered to as The Monkey Temple due to the large tribe of Rhesus Macaques who inhabit the temple ruins. Whilst travellers and tourists flock to see the monkeys, many locals also make the journey to the temples so you are never without company on the journey through the hills! Be warned, the monkeys are mischievous and are known to steal bags, cameras and hats! 90

10. Enjoy a Festival Jaipur is host to many festivals, and if you book your trip to coincide with one of them you will not be disappointed! From the Camel Festival, where processions of bedecked camels walk through the streets, to the Desert Festival where for three days, the otherwise barren land of Jaisalmer comes to life and is filled with hordes of colourfully dressed people. Important moments of the past are acted out through folk dancing, there is a turban tying competition and a Mr. Desert contest as well as camel races. The Gangaur Fair is by far the most important and highly celebrated festival in Jaipur, in honor of the Goddess Parvati and Gauri. Both married and unmarried women take part in the festival with lots of enthusiasm. The festival has a lot of religious importance to the people as Goddess Gauri and Parvati represent perfection in love and marriage. The goddesses are also worshipped for another reason as it is believed that praying to them provides good life partners. For women who are already married they pray for a happy married life and for the well-being of their hisbands. The festival lasts for 18 days and the city comes to life with colour and celebration.

Bramwood was originally adapted for our son who is a wheelchair user who is affected by Cerebral Palsy. Bramwood is an accessible adapted holiday home based on the Gower Peninsular, near Swansea, Wales. Our background as a family is that my husband has been the primary carer to our 33-year-old son who is severely disabled with Cerebral palsy. We know from personal experience what it is like to travel with someone who is disabled, and have fallen foul of the many things that can happen when travelling. We like to create a unique experience for all our guests by discussing the needs of the guests and trying our very best to ensure everything is in place prior to their arrival. Last year we flew a drone over our bungalow as we are aware that for some people who stay with us they will not be able to walk or drive their wheelchairs ins certain areas of Gower like going up Rhossili Downs and viewing Rhossili beach from a high point. The video is featured on our Facebook page and twi er account. We source locally produced Gower food, and stock as much as we can in our welcome basket which also includes our Dragon called Sizzle. Bramwood Holiday Bungalow is designed to accommodate
wheelchair users, disabled or accompanied disabled people. Unique to the Gower and renovated to allow easy access around the property and includes rooms comprehensively adapted to enable a guest of limited mobility to stay in comfort. Located on the Gower Peninsula close to Swansea, South Wales Our spacious bungalow fully equipped for you to enjoy a stress-free holiday. Bramwood Disabled Holiday Bungalow includes latest equipment from leading manufacturers including ArjoHuntleigh all provided to aid your stay. The Bungalow is accredited and is situated down a peaceful, quiet tree lined lane in the hamlet of Pi on on the slopes of Rhossili Downs. Bramwood Holiday Bungalow is situated down a peaceful, quiet tree lined lane in the hamlet of Pi on on the slopes of Rhossili Downs. There are many walks one of which is down through Pi on Cross farm to Mewslade Bay that many surfers enjoy. There are many accessible beaches on Gower and Swansea. Visit our links page for more info. We are in the process of ge ng accredited for disabled access, and fully equipped for you to have a stress-free holiday. We have been graded 4 Stars with Visit Wales which was very exci ng for us and we try very hard to maintain the Visit Wales standard. The ArjoHuntleigh Maxi Sky 2 hoist is a X-Y ceiling tracking system that will allow coverage of the bedroom and bathroom. We are also replacing our
profiling bed with a Minuet 2 extending profiling bed, which means that we can cater for tall people, and they will not be required to hire a bed in the future. Bramwood is in a superb posi on set down a lane off the main Rhossili road, so it is quiet and peaceful, but close enough to explore the Gower Peninsula. One of the places that is a must visit is to drive to Rhossili and have a drink in the local tearooms, or go to the pub. The views are spectacular of the Worm’s Head and Rhossili beach. We work with Ben who runs Surfability and teach disabled children and adults to surf using specially designed surf boards at Caswell Bay, Swansea. A trip into Swansea is a must as there is a coastal path which runs 6 miles from Swansea to Mumbles. Swansea has many and varied a rac ons many of which provide very good access for wheelchair users. We can have made available a beach wheelchair which allows everyone to go to the beach together so all can enjoy their holiday experience. Bramwood can accommodate from children to the elderly in our accessible bedroom which has a profiling bed and a ceiling tracking room covering hoist. We therefore as a family know what it is like to travel, stay in hotels, and to eat out, always having to think ahead. Can we get the wheelchair in and what equipment is available, and to get there to find the hotel does not have a shower commode, or gives you a hoist sling for a very large person?
way to get someone into and out of a normal bath safely. In Bramwood we are therefore trying to create a unique opportunity for families to enjoy a break with access to specialist equipment, in an area of outstanding natural beauty which maybe you would not have chosen to visit. It is nice to be able to book to go away and someone at the other end has looked at the pi alls of travelling with a wheelchair user, and has been there themselves. If you can fill in the booking form that I will supply you with as much informa on, so that if I can source equipment you require I have me to get it in place before you arrive. I am passionate about making holiday accommoda on more accessible for everyone to enjoy what we have to offer on Gower. I also have experience of being a military wife, and know the stresses that go with that life. We live near Tidworth and are hoping to help families whose husband or wife has been affected by injuries whilst on tour. Bramwood is also a quiet peaceful place to sit in the garden and to listen to the bird song or the waves crashing on the cliffs at high de. We have been offered a unique opportunity to showcase Bramwood by Just for Her magazine and hope to hear from you soon.
A er 3 days of no hoist or a bed that is adjustable for the user and carer, you are ready to go home because there is no
