nnovation happens in the construction industry very quickly. Adoption of such innovation however is not something we’re very good at. Asphalt contractors are continually given options to improve their productivity and bottom line, but many times choose to continue to do things the old way because that’s how it’s always been. The problem with that however is that it puts the industry, and your company, well behind the competition who has decided to embrace change. In fact, the rate of productivity growth in the construction industry has fallen dramatically behind other sectors. Between 1947 and 2010, the U.S. agriculture industry had a cumulative productivity growth of 1,510%, according to MarketWatch. For the manufacturing industry, it was 76% growth, while the construction industry has seen only 6% productivity growth over the 63-year time span. Whether your competition is the concrete industry or the contractor down the road, staying on top of change is good for business.

8

EQUIPMENT UPGRADES DRIVE SUCCESS One way asphalt contractors and producers can keep up with our ever-changing industry is by familiarizing themselves with the newest equipment upgrades and technology the industry has to offer. We have just the answer for that on page 10 of this issue. CONEXPO 2020 saw a massive amount of equipment innovation for the road building industry. From new iron to innovative ways you can keep track of your materials, manufacturers are working hard to make your job easier. While buying new equipment may not be on your radar, with the strong start to the year, maybe it should be. The investments being made for our growing population with housing starts, infrastructure improvements and other construction work isn’t going away, regardless of the uncertainty an election year causes. Many presidential candidates are promising funding for infrastructure and with growing bipartisan support, the issue can’t be ignored for much longer. While you may not feel comfortable making a huge investment right now, can your company afford not to if you want to stay competitive? Companies that invest in their people, technology and the equipment needed to get the job done will be poised for another successful year. What are you excited about in 2020? XBE is a truck broker that uses proprietary software to coordinate among multiple haulers to virtually stitch together a swarm of trucks which disbands when the job is over. Like other brokers, XBE allows contractors to sidestep the expense of owning a fleet or the hassle of hiring and coordinating truck drivers. XBE handles everything, from the number of trucks needed, to setting contracts, to paying invoices.

hassle of hiring and coordinating truck drivers. XBE handles everything, from the number of trucks needed, to setting contracts, to paying invoices. The startup, based in Old Irving Park, IL also helps general contractors fulfill government-mandated hiring requirements of minority- and women-owned businesses. Customers pay based on the number of dump trucks they use and the miles they drive and XBE can also save customers money. It coordinates independent drivers who carry less overhead than big trucking companies. Its technology improves planning for deliveries, allowing construction sites to operate more efficiently, while reducing transportation miles. And it cuts the time and money spent on paperwork. The cloud-based platform is both designed to work equally well in mobile and desktop environments to enable all stakeholders to collaborate in whatever environment they find themselves in. XBE is available on any modern web browser and is also packaged as a native application for iOS and Android to enable extra features that require access to device sensors. SUCCESSFUL CONTRACTOR IMPLEMENTATION Just down the road from XBE, Gallagher Asphalt in Thornton, IL, was experiencing their own trucking issues and was in need of a solution. "We have seen everything from a shortage of trucks, truckers not meeting proper insurance requirements, trucking operations in a black box and back office processing

TECHNOLOGY MATTERS

Training Key to Success

was taking way too long," Will Gallagher, project manager at Gallagher Asphalt says. "We were looking for a way to simplify our operations and give more time back to our staff." Gallgher used XBE for the first time in 2019 to manage all of their trucking operations. From liquid hauling, low boys and hauling HMA, stone, dirt and more, they used the XBE platform to execute everything from planning to payment. The company also used XBE to schedule and manage live production operations of all of Gallagher Asphalt's jobs with a large focus on their asphalt related jobs. "We developed our own scheduling software (PaveElite) in 2018/2019 but didn’t incorporate a trucking piece to it because we had been in talks with XBE,” Gallagher says. "As a company, we are never satisfied with what currently exists, we are always looking for who’s working on the next great thing and if we can't find someone doing it, we will build it ourselves. The Chicago area where we work is probably one of the most competitive markets in the U.S. and we need to do everything possible to stay on the cutting edge and trim costs as much as possible to remain competitive. We found this in XBE." Much of the platform is computer driven so reports, data input and outputs, and accounting details are all calculated and formulated automatically. This has allowed the company to remove many manual processes from things like calculating job trucking cost, aggregating and invoicing/paying

22

truckers, scheduling trucks and construction crews/equipment. "If you look at how smooth Uber & Lyft operate, XBE is similar type of setup that independent owners or fleets operate on the platform and accounting is always accurate shortly after a trip has been completed." Gallagher says as a company they were able to cut approximately 160+hrs of labor per week during the 2019 season using XBE instead of their old manual processes. "We have seen tremendous value in the field by providing both our foreman and superintendents access to all sorts of information at their fingertips," Gallagher says. "We have been able to cut down on phone calls and text messages and instead push information to the respective parties, so everyone is seeing the latest information in real time. Our team now has the intel to provide live feedback to how they are performing and tie this to financial metrics so they can truly see how they are impacting the bottom line."

Once Gallagher Asphalt chose to move forward with the XBE software, they knew they would need complete employee buy-in for the company to be successful with the program. “Training is the most crucial piece of any technology implementation,” Will Gallagher says. “Most of the time implementation fails not because the software doesn’t work, but because of poor planning and execution of the implementation roll out. These types of activities are all human related activities. You will have people who dive right in to the technology and help out, others who resist change and need more time and attention, and you may even have some people fight the system in fear of losing their jobs or becoming obsolete. The key to solving this is to have leadership fully dedicated and believing in the change from the beginning. “This is change management 101 and you need a team leader to know the software backwards and forewords,” he continues. “I’d be lying to you if I said this change only took our company a couple weeks to implement. I probably spent more than 40 hours a week working on the implementation and roll out for about 6 months until I had team members recognizing and believing in what we were working to accomplish at Gallagher. “It was a bumpy road, but the rewards and value being recognized moving forward was well worth the investment.”

how much pride and dedication he and his sisters, Debra Mallard, president and Terri Hart, vice president have in building the successful asphalt paving company their parents, Virginia and the late Arnold Mallard, launched in 1982. V.A. Paving, Inc. has two paving crews that generate 80 percent of their revenue and that means the production operation needs to keep them supplied. V.A. owns enough paving equipment to outfit three crews but like other construction industries it is difficult to find capable workers who are interested in a career in construction.

V.A. Paving, Inc. has two paving crews that generate 80% of their revenue and that means the production operations need to keep them supplied.

The company’s goal has always been “to provide a quality product at an affordable price with integrity and professionalism.” A straightforward business philosophy, but it’s one that evolved and adapted over the years since the company’s modest beginnings. That basic business approach was and is to build a loyal customer

base with the City of Cocoa, City of Titusville, City of Melbourne, Brevard County, Melbourne Airport, NASA, U.S. Air Force, and other federal government agencies. EARLY SUCCESS As a woman-owned small business, V.A. Paving focused on work in Brevard County, FL, training personnel to specialize on local, state and federal government construction projects. Within five years of its founding, V.A. Paving Inc. was awarded the coveted John F. Kennedy Space Center, NASA, “Small Woman-Owned Business of the Year” award and became the recipient of that award on four additional occasions. More paving work soon followed, leading to V.A. Paving’s first plant acquisition in 1990, an 80-tph portable Astec, Inc. plant the paving contractor set up at NASA to supply a large project that required an onsite plant. After the job was completed, the portable plant was relocated to 800 Cidco Road. Since then, V.A. Paving purchased a used 1974 Astec Bicentennial 500-tph

plant in 2001 to handle their growing business. In 2003 V.A. was low bidder for the annual road resurfacing contract with Brevard County to maintain all roads and streets within their network. The contract is bid every two years and V.A. has been awarded the contract for the past fifteen years. The county has an aggressive maintenance program that requires 50 miles of roadway to be paved annually. Most are mill and resurface and some

are total reconstruction. One third of V.A. Paving’s work today is tied to the county contract. In 2015, a hole in the dryer drum of the almost 30-year-plant had to be repaired in the middle of a major project and that was the beginning of the paving contractor’s evaluation of what needed to be done to continue the company’s growth trajectory. “We patched up the drum and eventually replaced it the following December through February,” Mallard says. “Dealing with the drum issues was an indication that we would need to make some improvements to our production capabilities.” The capacity to produce and pave that much asphalt for one customer (Brevard County) along with the U.S. Air Force and NASA, airport taxiways and runways has led to other major projects for the Florida contractor.

PRODUCTION NOTES TIME FOR A NEW PLANT After dealing with the drum repair and replacement, V.A. Paving began discussing other improvements with Astec. “The Astec representatives were supportive of whatever we needed and were always here when we had a problem,” he explains. “Initially, since we replaced the dryer drum in 2015, we wanted to replace some of the other major components – baghouse, cold feed bins, silos and new control room, but we didn’t want to shut down our operation for more than two weeks at a time.” Then V.A. Paving’s Astec representative, Jonathan Brown, came back with a proposal to set up an entirely new plant parallel to the existing plant in order to eliminate any disruption to the production the paving contractor required to supply existing customers and pursue new projects. Main components of the new proposed stationary plant facility included: • Dillman 300 TPH 7-ft. 6-in. by

A WISE INVESTMENT At first, Mallard was “taken aback” by the additional expense, but after discussing the option with his sisters, they all agreed it was the best approach to take. “By deciding to go with an all-new plant, we were able to have new power and fuel lines brought into the facility,” Mallard notes. “But more importantly, we discussed what this would mean to the next generation who would be running this business. We considered the number of sons, daughters and cousins working here, and decided we needed to invest in a facility to meet their needs for the next 20 years. We laid this out so we could add three additional asphalt storage silos when necessary to support our growth.” One of the more significant upgrades with a new plant is deciding to upgrade to a new a state-of-the-art control room. V.A. Paving knew they needed to make this investment as well. “A veteran plant operator can run any plant, but new hires, especially younger operators, will be more receptive to newer technology,” Mallard says.

30

“In many cases these control rooms can automatically make adjustments, taking the guess work out of manually adjusting the various functions. This is a major improvement to bring our technology up to 2019-2020 standards.” As for other significant improvements, the Dillman counterflow drum not only delivers a mix production process familiar to the plant operator, but also a more reliable performance. That performance is also enhanced by the new baghouse capacity. The new plant also provides better recycling capabilities, which is important considering the county road work allows 35 percent recycled in the mix design it requires. The only components V.A. Paving did not replace were the existing liquid asphalt cement binder tanks. It took three to four days to switch the AC lines from the old plant to the new plant, and upgrades have been made on the oil heating system for the tanks and lines. “When we look back at the decision to invest in a new plant versus trying

ASPHALT CONTRACTOR MARCH/APRIL 2020

V.A. Paving considered the number of sons, daughters and cousins working at the company and decided to invest in a facility that would meet their needs for the next 20 years.

to upgrade the old, we realized it was absolutely the best decision we could have made,” Mallard states. “The thought of closing the plant for two weeks at a time to replace one component and then additional two-week shutdowns to replace other components would have cost us $15,000 a day just in lost asphalt mix production. But more importantly for the 60+ employees who count on V.A. Paving’s success, the investment we made really positions our company for continued growth.”

nergy consumption is a huge expense for any company, but it’s particularly true at the asphalt plant. Energy costs are driving most asphalt plant operations today and many producers are looking to reduce costs in any way they can. One of the best ways to cope with volatile energy costs is to reduce consumption at the plant. Energy Star has recently launched the Energy Treasure Hunt campaign to help companies undergo a collaborative quest to uncover the ways to improve

energy efficiency. Their hope is these events help reveal the untapped potential for energy savings in America’s commercial and industrial facilities. WHY CONDUCT AN ENERGY TREASURE HUNT? If you have ever been through an energy audit, you know the negative sentiment that surrounds those events. Energy Star has sought to take the negative elements out of these procedures through their treasure hunt process. An Energy Treasure Hunt should be seen as an important tool for advancing energy management in your organization Energy Treasure Hunts: • Identify saving opportunities while building a culture of continuous improvement • Reinforce employee engagement and recognition

One of the best ways to cope with volatile energy costs is to reduce consumption at the plant.

• Shift the organization culture and change behaviors • Share best practices across sites and organizations “The question always is how do you motivate employees to pursue energy innovations, even when it’s not their job?” Bruce Bremer, strategic advisor at Energy Star says. “These treasure hunt events are usually held over 1-3 days at your facility to help identify no and low-cost energy saving opportunities. Companies engage and train employees in building a culture of energy efficiency that they can hopefully think about beyond the event.”

PRODUCTION NOTES

“During an Energy Treasure Hunt, companies engage and train employees in building a culture of energy efficiency that they can think about beyond the event.”

Energy Star outlines the steps facilities can take and even provides treasure maps for facilities to use where they can identify areas at their plant that might be utilizing too much energy and how they can rectify them. “Organizations use resources including labor, materials, equipment and energy to operate facilities,” Bremer says. “Most understand the basics of energy use and demand for utilities, however many do not regularly consider opportunities for optimizing these resources

and controlling operating costs.” The Energy Treasure Hunt is a dynamic, effective process for identifying savings opportunities. By focusing on energy savings, Energy Treasure Hunts will support the implementation of an energy management program for your company. HOW TO DO AN ENERGY TREASURE HUNT Before you start changing things, you need to understand where your company is at right now in terms of energy consumption and where you need to improve. Gather data before you start the treasure hunt process and decide what areas should be a focus. There are four main phases to an energy treasure hunt:

Preparation The first phase of the treasure hunt is called the preparation phase. Six weeks before an event, there should be scheduled discussions with leadership to obtain support and begin planning for

the review. Agendas should be created and teams/resources dedicated to the event during this time. Scheduled discussions with organization’s leadership to obtain support and begin data gathering activity should also happen during this time.

Pre-training One week before the onsite event, a pre-training meeting should be held with team leaders to confirm roles and responsibilities, an agenda and detail sheets

Onsite event During the onsite event, teams identify and quantify savings opportunities, summarize and present results to management. Onsite events should be scheduled around production times and logistics should be reviewed based on what resources are needed. This includes meeting safety requirements for visitors and those not familiar with your plant.

Follow-up One to four weeks after the onsite event, schedule a follow up meeting for pursuing the energy reduction opportunities. An Energy Treasure Hunt should focus on operational opportunities, many of which will be low-cost or no-cost efficiency improvements. “The intent of these events is not to change how your facility operates, but to identify areas where energy could be saved,” Bremer says. “Over 75% of changes we see implemented are low cost to no cost things (under $1,000).”

The biggest consumer of energy is the burner and dryer at the asphalt plant which is why your stockpiles play a huge role in saving your company money.

PRODUCTION NOTES EASY ENERGY WINS AT THE ASPHALT PLANT Once you’ve conducted your Energy Treasure Hunt, you might find easy ways to increase your energy efficiency. Here are three big ways to save:

Stockpiles The biggest consumer of energy is the burner and dryer at the asphalt plant which is why your stockpiles play a huge role in saving your company money. In fact, a 1% decrease in moisture in your stockpile decreases your costs by 12% because your dryer doesn’t have to work as hard. Covering your aggregates with a fabric structure is the best way to help prevent moisture from even getting to your aggregates. If that is not an option, sloping the stockpiles properly at an ideal 4% slope will also help. Be sure to have the water drain towards the north.

Insulation Proper insulation can make or break your plant efficiency. If you want to reduce fuel usages, examining and repairing insulation on all heated areas is important. Many mix facilities do not insulate their piping because it’s difficult to do, but proper pipe insulation can save you big money in terms of energy efficiency. Insulation blankets can be utilized to cover those areas that may be difficult to insulate. The blankets can easily be removed and reattached when service is needed.

Keep to a schedule While it may not have anything to do with your plant components, making sure you have a proper schedule in place with the field is paramount to reducing

40

costs at the plant and controlling plant waste. A proper schedule will have a direct impact on energy as any overruns will result in heating materials that are not ever selling. Reductions in raw materials used (whether it is aggregate and asphalt, burner fuel or equipment fuel) means plant owners have to buy less to produce the same amount of material. These savings should go directly to the bottom line for any producer. Accurate orders, limiting the number of mix changes and knowing plant timing will all reduce waste generated every day you produce asphalt mixtures. Knowing how much waste you're producing and trying to get that to the minimum amount possible while still producing a quality mix is ultimately the goal.

If your company chooses to participate in an Energy Treasure Hunt, they can gain Energy Star recognition for the energy savings achieved by implementing your identified opportunities. Plant certification is awarded to plants in select industries that score in the top range of energyefficient performance. There is also a Challenge for Industry that recognizes plants that reduce their energy intensity by 10% or more within 5 years. Visit www.energystar.gov/industrychallenge for more information.

Any small bump created during asphalt pavement construction can lead to pavement failure down the road. Make a plan to better avoid problem transverse joints

I

t’s a well-known fact that joints are some of the first places that an asphalt pavement will start to fail. That’s because joints in asphalt allow for water intrusion which can lead to pavement cracking and potholes. For this reason, paving contractors work hard to ensure the creation of joints in the mat is kept to a minimum. However, when asphalt paving is interrupted, commonly at the start and finish of a day’s work, a transverse joint is formed. While these types of joints can be unavoidable at some points of your project, there are things that can be done to create fewer of this type of joint and make the ones that are necessary less troublesome for the life of the roadway.

TWO TYPES OF TRANSVERSE JOINTS Transverse joints fall in to two categories, terminal and construction. Terminal joints are those that form at the beginning or end of the project and construction joints happen when contractors experience a breakdown, weather delay or when the mat cools down enough between loads where contractors will need to pick up, cut, step back and start paving again.

Transverse Joints Can Form: • • • • •

At the beginning of a project At the end of the project At the tie in of an intersection At the tie in of a structure At the end of the shift (i.e. night joints) • During breakdowns • Due to weather delays/cancellation While terminal joints are a normal part of building roads, construction joints can be properly planned for in order to minimize their creation.

JOBSITE INNOVATIONS

CONSTRUCTION OF TRANSVERSE JOINTS To help minimize the appearance of a terminal joint, it’s important to follow some best practices for paving transverse joints. Having a good starting point is paramount to the success of that transverse joint and this means having a straight, flat, vertical face that is intact with no waves. When setting down on the joint, be sure to set the paving width and that the screed is set to match the existing profile. The tow point should be adjusted to match the screed pivot point so the screed comes off the joint parallel to the line of paving. Remove all tension of the screed so that the screed is in free float and fully supported by the starting reference, then introduce your angle of attack based on manufacturer guidelines. The screed should also be hot before starting to pave.

It’s suggested that you start with your auger height 2-in. above the mat, however that height can be adjusted up or down depending on the mix type. Next, fill the auger chamber manually so that you can see the top of the auger, but so that mix is only filling the chamber up halfway. Do not force the material out to the endgates, but instead manually move the material out to the endgates to fill the material in. From there, adjust your flow gates, conveyor speed and auger speed to maintain that head of material at all times. When pulling off from the joint, you want to quickly achieve and then maintain a consistent paving speed. Always visually inspect the mat behind you to be sure there are no lines or undesirable textures coming out of the paver, which could be due to segregation. Screed vibes should also be

turned on during this time. Some contractors may opt to use a 10-ft. straight edge when taking off from the transverse joint to check their work and provide the crew with reassurance that everything is as expected pulling off from the joint. Always try to minimize handwork at the transverse joint as well. You may need to remove excess material at the joint but you don’t want to break any material here which could create independent segregation. If everything was set up correctly, you should not have high or low areas that require additional handwork. If, however, adjustment of the surface level is required, it must be done promptly and before rolling begins. When compacting the joint, there are two approaches that work well. One rolling pattern involves approaching the joint at an angle and moving up

towards the edge of the mat to keep joints out of wheel paths as much as possible. Continue rolling until the joint is smooth. The other approach is to cross roll and pinch the joint which is not always an option on all projects. This pattern involves putting the drum mostly on the cold side during the first pass, then checking for smoothness and repeating with the drum further on the hot side during the second pass. No matter what method you choose, once these patterns are completed, the crew can continue rolling the mat as usual. END OF DAY BEST PRACTICES Before you’re ready to end the job for the day, a night joint needs to be made. It is important that the paver be run in normal fashion right up to the point

“Try to minimize hand work at the transverse joint. While you may need to remove excess material, you don’t want to break any material which could create segregation.” at which the transverse joint is constructed. This means the head of material in front of the screed should remain as consistent as possible up to and at the location of the joint, so that the forces acting on the screed will be constant and a consistent angle of attack will be maintained for the screed. The result

will be a uniform mat thickness at the joint—the same thickness as that of the previously placed mix. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) notes that it is a common, but incorrect practice, to empty out the paver hopper when a transverse joint is to be built. When this is done, the paver operator runs the hopper out of mix and the transverse joint is constructed at the point where the empty paver has stopped. As the hopper is emptied, however, the amount of mix carried on the augers is reduced until it is minimal. This process reduces the head of material in front of the paver screed, causing the screed angle to fall. The thickness of the mat then gradually decreases as the joint location is approached. The transverse joint is then built at a low point in the new pavement surface, resulting in a dip that will be felt by traffic.

JOBSITE INNOVATIONS

The FHWA says it is a much better practice to locate the transverse joint at a point where the head of material in front of the screed is normal. This type of operation, however, requires more work on the part of the paving crew. If the joint is made where the head of material is constant, the paver screed is simply raised up at the point where the joint is to be built. Doing so however leaves a great deal of mix on the roadway. When finishing a day’s work then, the leftover asphalt is removed and then usually ramped down, if only for construction traffic or to allow rollers

50

to come right to the end of the run. Before paving is continued the next day, this ramp must be removed by cutting the asphalt back to a point where the layer is full depth and even. If there is any doubt as to the extent of asphalt to be removed, a straight edge should be used to determine where the level drops off, and whether any bump has been created by rollers reversing before the end of the run. A little pre-planning ahead of a transverse joint can mean the difference between a bump in the mat or a smooth roadway.

ASPHALT CONTRACTOR MARCH/APRIL 2020

When pulling off from the joint you want to quickly achieve and then maintain a consistent paving speed. Always visually inspect the mat behind you to be sure there are no lines or undesirable textures coming out of the paver, which could be due to segregation. Screed vibes should also be turned on during this time.

Enables Advances in Machine Connectivity

EAS

Connectivity and automation benefit from the speed and reliability of the emerging 5G cellular network

C

onstruction equipment is becoming increasingly dependent on connectivity as the industry advances toward autonomous solutions. One of the technologies holding back the faster advancement of these technologies is the current limitations of the 4G cellular network. Machine connectivity and automation are increasing the demand for a network that can reliably handle vast amounts of data while being able

54

to connect a rapidly growing number of machines. Some of the more important considerations with the cellular network is the latency - the delay from the time a signal is sent to the time it is received by the machine - reliability and speed of exchange of information between two or more vehicles, the coverage and data security. 5G enters the picture with speeds up to 10 times faster than 4G. The 5G network promises an ultra-low latency of 1 ms at up to 500km/h (310 mph) speed, high peak data rate of 20 Gbps at up to 500 km/h (310 mph) speed and extreme density that can handle multiple connected vehicles and devices at once. This ultra-low latency also enables remote systems controlling a vehicle to react sooner, such as when

ASPHALT CONTRACTOR MARCH/APRIL 2020

braking or turning, vastly improving safety on the jobsite. But 5G is more than just a faster version of 4G. It has the potential to bring significantly more devices onto the network. Security is also improved since 5G can allow for stronger over-the-air encryption, subscriber identity protection and reduced risk of eavesdropping. WHAT IS 5G? There seems to be some confusion about cellular network terminology. 5G simply stands for fifth-generation cellular technology. Prior to 5G, there was 4G or fourth-generation technology, 3G or third generation and so on. The 2G network was developed prior to the mobile web. Then 3G came along and allowed users to surf the internet

on their smartphones. 4G increased speeds to where it was possible to stream video and run apps. The 5G network promises to advance AI, virtual reality and IoT technologies. Technologies between generations are generally not compatible. 1G was analog cellular, while 2G including CDMA, GSM and TDMA - was the first generation of cellular technology. 3G used EVDO, HSPA and UMTS technologies to increase speeds from 200 kbps and a few megabits per second. 4G uses WiMAX and Long Term Evolution (LTE) technologies that are now producing gigabit-level speeds. Consequently, like its predecessors, 5G will not be accessible via 4G devices.

WHAT HARDWARE WILL BE REQUIRED? Machines operating on a 5G network will need to be equipped with an onboard 5G-compatible modem configured for the network at the jobsite. Right now, the market for 5G components is increasing but the number of 5G-compatible components is still low. So what about your investment in 4G technology? Unlike previous generation cellular technologies, 4G is not expect to phased out. Instead, 4G will continue to improve with time as well. The real advantage of 5G will be in its enhanced capacity, low latency and security benefits.

The 5G technology will allow machines on the jobsite to coordinate movements. Doosan demonstrated how autonomous machines can work together with the introduction of Concept-X. Doosan Infracore

5G SETS STAGE FOR MACHINE AUTONOMY One important aspect of 5G is the possibility to prioritize data transmitted over the network and give critical processes such as machine autonomy priority. Construction equipment manufacturers have been heavily investing in autonomous technology that promises to alleviate the impact of the skilled labor shortage. driving a much faster market implementation of technologies like automation,” says Calle Skillsäter, technical specialist for Connected Machines at Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE). Volvo CE is one of many equipment manufacturers currently testing the use of 5G for autonomous vehicles. Telia, Ericsson and Volvo CE have launched Sweden’s first 5G network for industrial use at Volvo CE’s facility in Eskilstuna. Volvo CE will then become one of the first in the world to use 5G technology to test remote-controlled machines and autonomous solutions. “Automation has several levels and having 5G is an important technical support to enable us to drive development in this area. These trials in Eskilstuna will include the remote control of a conventional wheel loader but also further tests of the HX2 concept load carrier,” says Melker Jernberg, president Volvo CE. “We can see that the industry’s interest in 5G is considerable,” says Anders Olsson, CEO of Telia Sweden. “Automation of the entire flow will mean new

ways of working and greater gains from efficiency. But to connect businesscritical machines and vehicles requires a solution that is able to handle the massive amounts of data with guaranteed connection. That is what 5G can give us.” Doosan Infracore recently unveiled Concept-X, a comprehensive autonomous control solution for construction sites. Concept-X can be used to survey work site topography via 3D drone scanning, establish operational plans based on the topographical data and operate construction equipment such as excavators and wheel loaders without human intervention. It realizes the construction site of the future by having difficult construction work performed solely by equipment. Unmanned construction equipment is operated by the X-Center control center. Doosan Infracore asserts that the solution will boost productivity and economic feasibility significantly by reducing the time and costs required for construction equipment operations, while continuing to make work

sites safer. The company plans to commercialize Concept-X by 2025. Pending its commercialization, Doosan Infracore will introduce each of the above-mentioned technologies – including drone surveying, cuttingedge data analysis and unmanned construction equipment operations and control - individually as soon as they have been fully verified. Concept-X will rely on the 5G network. In 2018, Doosan Infracore, in partnership with LG U+, introduced 5G-based remote control technology. Currently, 5G is only available in limited regions and the rugged 5G components necessary to work in construction environments are hard to source. But expect 5G to gain traction as it is rolled out to more of the country and hardware becomes more readily accessible.

FOAM-TREATED ASPHALT PROJECT IN THE STATE

A 7-mile stretch of roadway was repaired using the process, saving a month of construction time and over $2.5 million in costs

ontractors and agencies alike know that completing work they’re not used to doing on a road repair project can be risky. Many times, however, that risk is rewarded when a project is completed ahead of schedule and under budget because all parties involved were willing to try something new. In the case of the Juntura Cutoff Road project in state of Oregon, the

Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) was rewarded to the tune of $2.5 million by using foamed asphalt for the first time to repair the roadway. “We estimate the project saved over a month of construction time and $2.5 million from a more traditional method,” Tom Strandberg, ODOT Region 5 public information officer says. And while coming in under budget was important, the shortened construction

Using foamed asphalt for this project saved over a month of construction time and $2.5 million from a more traditional method. And while coming in under budget was important, the amount of time the roadway was down to traffic was really what mattered for the project.

time was really what mattered for the project. The Cutoff Road connects EP Minerals Diatomite Mine, west of Juntura, with U.S. Highway 20, over which trucks transport the mineral to a plant west of Vale where it is processed. Because of the heavy truck traffic over several years, the road was completely falling apart and needed to be rebuilt. “Heavy truck traffic from the mine had led to a badly deteriorated roadway,” Strandberg says. “There were large potholes and a failing asphalt surface that needed to be fixed. The foam-treated asphalt process mills, then treats existing material for use as base material. The biggest advantage with the foam treated asphalt process is that it uniformly coats the existing material with oil, which increases strength of the base. "This process had a huge advantage over a concrete-treated base because we needed to keep the roadway available

for traffic during construction," he continues. "A traditional concretetreated base would require a road closure for a few weeks, however the foam treated base would take traffic immediately after it was rolled so the mine operation was not adversely affected by the construction. The process also shortened the time of construction by several weeks.” State, county and company officials had been working on a funding package to pay for needed repairs since 2016. The estimated cost of the project was $6.7 million and a combination of state, local and company money was cobbled together to pay for the project. BUDGET CONCERNS DIMINISHED In order for the roadway to receive the green light for repairs, the state decided to use hot in-place recycling with foamed asphalt to keep the project under budget. This project marked the first time ODOT used the method in the state. The preliminary design for the roadway was completed by Anderson Perry in the Fall of 2017 who worked with Ferguson Surveying and Engineering to complete the full roadway design. A pavement consultant, Mike Anderson,

was brought in as the brains behind the foamed asphalt portion of the project. "The project was located in a very rural area, very far away from urban centers or material sources," Andy Lindsey, PE, senior engineer at Anderson Perry says. "Our consultant, Mike Anderson, had used the foamed The Cutoff Road connects EP Minerals Diatomite Mine, west of Juntura, with U.S. Highway 20, over which trucks transport the mineral to a plant west of Vale where it is processed. asphalt technique in other places and it really provides a lot of options. More structural strength and time savings were the biggest benefits for this project. The Coughlin Company was contracted to completed the foamed asphalt process. To start, 8-in. of asphalt was milled up using a Roadtec RX-900e. As that was happening, hot oil was injected into back in to the material, creating a foam which expanded in volume and covered

64

the aggregate. This process binds the material together to form a very strong base as it is laid down, allowing traffic to get back on the road right away. Since foamed asphalt is made onsite, the need to transport emulsion from a plant to a jobsite is eliminated. Because this was the first time using the foamed asphalt process, Anderson Perry said they definitely had a learning curve to overcome. "With this being the first time using the process, we didn't quite know

what to expect and what to be looking for," Lindsey says. "In the future, we'd want to pay more attention to the compaction process happening behind the grinder to make sure we're getting grades and slopes correct. Once that foamed asphalt sets up after an hour or so, it's essentially ready for traffic so it's not like aggregate base where you can go back and do some fine trimming. We would definitely pay closer attention to that next time."

By rehabilitating the roadway in this manner, the project is expected to add about 20 years of life to the heavily trafficked road.

SURFACE COURSE LOGISTICS To finish the roadway, Oregon Mainline Paving put down 2.5 in. PG 64-28 level three asphalt. THE LAST EXIT

Off-Season Tips for Growth Investing in growth planning during slower months can help increase overall profitability once the warmer weather returns

Lukas/Pexels

W

hile wintertime is usually considered the off-season in the asphalt industry as temperatures drop too low to efficiently complete paving projects, it can also be the best time to focus on business strategy and proactively lay the groundwork for a strong year to come. Here are several tips for investing in growth planning during colder months to increase overall profitability once the warmer weather returns. REFLECT ON THE PREVIOUS YEAR AND ADJUST FOR THE FUTURE Take advantage of the slower period to reflect on the work you completed the prior year. Sort customer records by size, type and profitability and consider what worked well for your business and what wasn’t as successful so you can adjust moving forward. Suppliers and manufactures can also be a great resource for building future plans. Consider setting up meetings with these partners to aid in your business assessment and identify new opportunities. Facilitating an open dialogue about recent shortcomings can prompt discussion, giving professionals a better sense

of products and solutions available at the manufacturer level. By consulting with a trusted supplier, contractors are likely to receive ideas and support for growth based on the business’s current resources. With reflections on the past year and ideas from partners in hand, take the opportunity to look for new types of work that fit your existing business model. Infrared patching, thermoplastic marking, patch paving and tennis court refinishing all serve as potential options for asphalt professionals looking to expand their services. Identify offerings that can be introduced into the company with minimal investment in equipment and without increasing fixed costs. CONNECT WITH CUSTOMERS The slower season is the perfect opportunity to reconnect with previous customers and gain perspectives that can inform overall business strategy. Start by asking your best clients for honest and constructive feedback. Doing so will provide insight into company strengths and weaknesses as they relate to customer service and project satisfaction. If the discussion goes well, don’t be afraid to ask for a referral. Testimonials

add value by creating word-of-mouth momentum behind a growing company. Contractors can expand their digital footprints as well by encouraging reviews on directory services like Yelp or social media platforms like Facebook and LinkedIn. REVISIT THE COMPANY CONTENT STRATEGY Social media, email marketing, direct mail and other sales resources also play an important role in increasing brand visibility. During the busy months, it’s often challenging to make improvements to consumer-facing content. Avoid sharing outdated resources by mapping out a content strategy and revising marketing collateral before the start of the spring paving season. Take advantage of the down period to update email and mailing lists as well, as accurately targeting your potential customers in the region can lead to a higher conversion rate in the coming year.
