Welcome to our Annual Product Guide!

Welcome to Concrete Contractor’s annual Product Guide. Inside you should find over 100 products, equipment, and solutions designed to help contractors work better, more efficiently, more productively, etc.

It’s been said that construction has been slow to integrate technologies into the workflow. If you look at the last five years or so, it seems technology has been more than welcome. There’s computer technology, sure, but also consider the equipment you use day-in/day-out. For one, insiders say that contractors are now more comfortable with digital tracking of field performance with the use of scanners, drones, and video documentation. However, being able to have and connect to a (reliable) 5G network can be a limiting factor for many. Is this increased use due to early adopters that shook the cobwebs out or are we seeing the effect of a workforce being that much more familiar in using technology? The practical answer is it’s likely both.

I spoke with James Baty II, F.ACI, F.TCA, Executive Director, Concrete Foundations Association (CFA). He sees technology most significantly impacting software and cordless solutions. He explains, “We have seen software like FieldWire becoming of high interest as companies are seeking to find greater efficiency in management control and communications. Portable power, as in battery-powered handheld tools continues to be on the rise, particularly for companies that have fleet management systems. And, robotics, while it has a history of confidence and participation in [the CFA], continues to grow in conversation as the technology evolves and even more begin to test it.”

As you page through this Product Guide, consider the development process behind each innovation and the technology behind it all. It’s everywhere.

That’s enough out of me. Enjoy this issue.

Thank you.

Why Use Predictive Maintenance of Dewatering & Concrete Pumps

The most prevalent pumps within a construction site are centrifugal water pumps, used for moving water and other light liquid substances, and positive displacement pumps, used for thicker fluids, such as oils, mud, slurries, and more. These pumps are critical assets at a jobsite as they are responsible for the removal of water and mud from excavated areas. In addition to transporting fluids, these pumps also play a role in other construction processes, such as cement injection.

Unexpected failure of these pumps can impact construction work, resulting in delays and cost overruns. In addition, if a pump fails to remove water and hazardous materials, this will impact worksite safety, as well as the environment.

Due to the critical nature of these pumps, many organizations perform frequent inspections and preventative maintenance. However, these practices are not always cost-effective or efficient. Oftentimes components are replaced that

may still be in a useable state. Also, the maintenance actions necessary to replace those components require personnel that could potentially be directed to more urgent tasks.

Employing a condition-based maintenance (CBM) strategy can alleviate some of these issues. While it does provide these benefits, CBM only yields the current state of the asset being monitored, not an early detection or warning of impending issues. Therefore, CBM does not reduce unplanned downtime and has minimal impact.

The goal of reducing unplanned downtime has sparked significant investment and interest in an alternative to CBM: predictive maintenance. This predictive approach is similar in that it relies on current signals from an asset, derived from sensors and other sources; however, it also leverages past data, domain expertise, and machine learning/AI to create a health model that be used to identify potential issues before they occur. These early signs of failure enable personnel to perform maintenance only at the exact time it is needed.

The Predictronics PDX platform is an end-to-end predictive analytics solution that monitors critical assets by collecting and analyzing big data, with the goal of reducing unplanned downtime, increasing productivity and improving product quality.

Predictronics

CASE STUDY

A worldwide oil and gas contractor specializing in automated drilling equipment and rig components wanted to apply a health monitoring approach to its mud pumps in the field. The contractor was experiencing mud pump leak events, which are not only dangerous to workers, but also environmentally hazardous. Their hope was to reduce these unexpected leaks and prevent the unplanned downtime caused by their failure and maintenance. By working with a predictive analytics company, this client sought to develop and validate a health monitoring solution by inducing faults on their test rig.

A PREDICTIVE MAINTENANCE SOLUTION

A year’s worth of historical data, as well as sensor data collected from the piston, suction and discharge mechanisms on two pumps in the field, were utilized in the development of this solution. After determining vibration trends in the frequency and time-frequency domain, key features crucial to developing the health models were extracted from the data These models then helped identify the contributing factors which led to pump seal failure.

The health monitoring solution pinpointed pump leaks events before they occurred through advanced signal processing and vibration-based pattern recognition. This allows the company to take action through predictive maintenance. By diagnosing failure days in advance, this solution improved productivity and reduced hazards,

saving the contractor money and resources and preventing disastrous environmental and worker safety issues.

CONSIDERATIONS WHEN DEPLOYING A PUMP PREDICTIVE MONITORING SOLUTION:

• Performing criticality analysis helps to prioritize the pumps that, when they fail, create the biggest headache for the company in terms of delays in production due to downtime and worksite pitfalls that affect personnel. Establishing which pumps are vital to efficiency at the offset and monitoring those particular assets ensures a solution that will deliver the uppermost value and return on investment (ROI) for the company.

• To develop the most accurate solution with the greatest value, a company and their predictive solution provider should work together to ascertain key failure modes, relevant maintenance records, and any previously collected data available from the pump’s controller.

• Not only should sensor placement be considered to help improve upon the data collected, but it may be decided that additional sensors are needed to gather the necessary data for this solution.

Telehandler Safety in Concrete Construction

Of all the trades, concrete contractors move the most materials and equipment and none of it is lightweight. Use this brief guide as a reminder to stay safe.

One of the top OSHA recordable incidents on jobsites is struck-by occurrences. There’s a lot of movement on a construction site and workers need to be aware of everything. Rebar, job boxes, tools, equipment, forms, not to mention a litany of construction materials all have to be moved around the site just to do the job. While working nearby, mind your own safety—being aware of the machine is step one.

For operators, visibility is vital. Spotters are typically required on the jobsite. Spotters and operators will communicate visually with either a flag or hand signals. Make sure both spotter and operator are on the same page during the morning preconstruction meeting.

Some telehandlers now include remote control operation, allowing an operator to be their own signal person outside without the potential blind spots inside the cab. Safety-wise, when off the deck with remote control, operators are bringing materials to themselves and being that much more strategic on where to place materials.

LOAD & LIFT LIMITS

The average weight is 1,000s of pounds. An overloaded machine or load movement risks a flip-over or drops—not to mention injury to construction workers or damage to the machine and your customer’s property.

Paper charts and load charts are fine, but many modern telehandlers include systems that limit that guesswork. As soon as an operator picks up a load, the system knows how much weight is on the forks, what’s being picked up, the capacity based on how the machine

is set up, and if it’s nearing the parameters. The system should not let the operator go past that point notifying the operator with alerts before locking. Manufacturers have either added weight or utilized engineering design and software to increase lifting capacities.

A CLEAN JOBSITE

There are also technologies that sense stable ground when applying outriggers.

CERTIFICATION

Operating a telehandler requires a rough-terrain forklift OSHA 7 certification. Contractors can find a local third-party training company but most telehandler forklift manufacturers/ dealer network offer a train-the-trainer program to provide familiarization.

Critical

One of the most proactive ways to affect safety while working around telehandlers is to keep the jobsite clean while holding true to great safety practices. Keeping the ground clear and well-graded will significantly help. Driving around the jobsite can also produce tripping hazards from the ruts created by the tires. These ruts can freeze in colder climates and become a significant issue on the jobsite.

Developed with the assistance of Joseph Leinwol, chief sales officer at Magni America / Magni Telescopic Handlers.

• Conduct a walk-around visual inspection for leaks, fraying, cracks, dents, bent or damaged parts. Wash the windshield if necessary.

• Ensure the telehandler is level or you’re working on level ground.

• Use outrigger pads whenever possible.

• Clearly mark the working area, especially for rotating telehandlers.

• Never drive a telehandler with the load in the air.

• Be mindful of potential operator blind spots.

• Ensure enough fork length is there to support the load.

• Use the right attachments for the load—for example, a hook attachment may be a better choice when moving rebar to avoid it sliding off either side of the forks.

• Know your machine’s capabilities.

• Always wear the appropriate PPE.

Unlocking Efficiency: Telehandlers Improve Concrete Operations

From streamlining the process of moving heavy elements to making placing materials on scaffolding more precise and efficient.

As a concrete contractor, you’re always looking for ways to do your work more efficiently and safely. This is not a one-size-fits-all industry because concrete projects each have unique needs and requirements based on the jobs that must be performed.

Efficiency isn’t just a goal but a necessity. Optimizing material handling is especially crucial to success when doing concrete work, and the equipment you use is an extension of the specialty tools you need to accomplish the work.

Whether you’re moving structural elements, like retaining walls and concrete foundations, to precast concrete slabs and panels, building boards, roof tiles, railroad ties, posts, poles, prestressed bridge beams, and trusses, these tools can be your go-to for lifting and moving heavy concrete loads with precision, ensuring materials are delivered exactly where you need them.

Telehandlers are available in various sizes and configurations, including compact, high-capacity, high-reach, and rotating models. They can pick up and carry heavier loads, up to 27,000 lbs. and more,

and pick up and place loads to higher heights, with enhanced reach capabilities, up to almost 100 ft., to provide you with a wide range of options to suit your specific jobsite needs.

TRADE TOOLS

Moving equipment and materials on jobsites can be a significant undertaking, especially on large projects. It’s not just about loading and unloading delivery trucks; it’s about helping you get the materials precisely where they need to be. Pallets of material, like brick and block, need to be precisely placed on scaffolding where the work is being done without jostling the temporary structure or damaging the permanent one. Once mortar and grout have been mixed, you need a way to deliver the material to the masonry structure, often at heights that are not reachable without extra lift and reach help.

Traditionally, forklifts or cranes have been used for this type of work, but with all these jobs to be done on concrete jobsites, telehandlers can not only lift higher but also extend further to help you

get materials where they are needed. By utilizing a variety of attachments, like pallet forks, brick forks, buckets and undercarriage hooks, you can gain even more versatility when using these tool carriers on projects.

PRECISION PLACEMENT

Your concrete operations demand precision, and a telehandler can play a crucial role in achieving it. With advanced maneuverability and telescopic capabilities, telehandlers enable you to reach heights and distances that other equipment cannot.

That’s because telehandlers are designed with features that enhance precision. For example, telescoping booms that can rotate attachments allow for accurate positioning of concrete buckets or pumps. This reduces your margin of error and minimizes the need for manual labor, saving you both time and resources.

Rotating telehandlers may also help you create a more efficient work environment by reducing travel on jobs. You can set the outriggers, rotate them to unload a truck and then rotate them to place the

load in a building without moving. Using a traditional fixed-boom telehandler, you would have to pick up the load, back up and then turn around to face the building before extending the load.

ENHANCED REACH

Working in dynamic environments calls for enhanced reach. Other equipment may struggle to adapt to a project’s diverse needs, but telehandlers excel in versatility. Two of the most important aspects of telehandler operation, especially when lifting material into place, you need to understand:

1. How much weight needs to be lifted and

2. How high the load needs to be lifted.

Telehandlers are generally categorized by maximum lift capacity and/or maximum lift height, and the equipment you’ll be rented or sold is based on these key attributes.

Traditional telehandlers have a maximum reach of 34-56 ft., with highreach models capable of reaching up to 75 ft. and higher. In addition, rotating telehandlers often allow you to replace a crane and give them the ability to reach up to 97 ft. with a detailed load chart. Placing 4,400 lbs. at 97 ft. can be a game-changer for many jobs. This can benefit you when you need precise concrete placement in challenging locations.

OPTIMIZED HANDLING

You know that efficient material handling is a cornerstone of successful concrete operations. Telehandlers are equipped with robust lifting capabilities that enable the swift and safe movement of materials across your concrete work sites. This accelerates your construction process and minimizes the risk of accidents or damage to your materials. Some telehandlers are designed for maximum stability and control, allowing you to handle heavy loads confidently. Features like precision control and load management systems contribute to enhanced material handling, ensuring your operations run smoothly and without disruptions.

ADDED VERSATILITY

Accessories contribute to their productivity and efficiency. Attachments offer more flexibility on jobsites, from picking and placing palletized loads to bucket work and suspending loads. When equipped with different attachments, like concrete buckets, forks, and grapples, a telehandler becomes even more adaptable for completing various concrete-related tasks. The telehandler’s ability to extend its reach with a telescopic boom allows you to pour concrete into hard-to-reach areas, whether a high-rise construction project or a confined space. Install a fork-mounted work platform on a carriage attachment and lift personnel for jobs requiring hands-on work at heights.

You may also find specialty attachments, like sweepers, helpful in tidying up jobsites and surrounding areas by collecting concrete debris into a hopper for disposal. Fork-mounted trash hoppers empty the hopper’s contents without leaving the cab. A telehandler equipped with these accessories can be a valuable addition to your equipment fleet, helping to keep your concrete projects clean and safe.

TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

Jobsite safety when using telehandlers in concrete work begins with training. It’s more than optimizing productivity and minimizing downtime; it’s also about learning from qualified instructors to help prepare you to make the right decisions at the right time when operating and/or servicing telehandlers.

Understanding the training requirements and individual responsibilities for telehandlers as outlined in the Powered Industrial Truck 1910.178 regulations mandated by OSHA is vital for the safe use of this type of access equipment.

Per OSHA, your telehandler training should consist of a combination of formal instruction (e.g., lecture, discussion, interactive computer learning, video tape, written material), practical training

(demonstrations performed by the trainer and practical exercises performed by the trainee) and evaluation of your performance in the workplace. All of your operator training and evaluation should be conducted by persons with the knowledge, training and experience to train powered industrial truck operators and evaluate their competence. These training regulations encompass all sizes and classifications of telehandlers.

Many OEMs offer operator and maintenance training for telehandlers. Following guidance from American National Standards Institute and the Industrial Truck Standards Development Foundation, training opportunities led by industry experts support safety, confidence and compliance.

IMPROVING OPERATIONS

Because telehandlers are versatile and adaptable, you’ll soon discover that these machines will typically be the first on your jobsites and the last to leave. From the initial preconstruction phases of a concrete project, where you can use them to unload trucks and deliver materials, to the closing stages, when you can utilize them for cleanup work, telehandlers will offer you innovative ways to improve efficiencies and safety in your next precast projects.

Cortec MCI-2018 X Water Repellent

MCI-2018 X is a 100% silane penetrating water repellent for concrete surfaces and is MCI-2018 minus the Migrating Corrosion Inhibitors. Its primary function is to line concrete substrate pores with a hydrophobic layer that reduces the ingress of moisture, chlorides and carbonation, extending the service life of the structure. If applied after a penetrating SACI (surface applied corrosion inhibitor), MCI-2018 X prolongs the protection period of the corrosion inhibitor. MCI-2018 X allows the surface to stay breathable and retain its original appearance. MCI-2018 X can be used for routine maintenance every five to 10 years or used as part of the finishing touches to a concrete repair. Because it does not change the substrate’s appearance, MCI-2018 X serves as an option for historical restorations.
