Training During a PANDEMIC
Training may look a little different this year, but it's still important to engage your crew to ensure the long term success of your construction business
A
s businesses around the world postpone and cancel in-person meetings in response to the Coronavirus, workplace training is emerging as one of the earliest and hardest-hit activities. However, now is not the time to give up on your employees and their future success at your company. If your employees are not engaged in their careers, your company is going to suffer. Low engagement, as well as a large number of actively unengaged employees, can have significant impacts on an organization's culture and bottom line. Unengaged workers cost U.S. companies between $483 billion and $605 billion each year, according to a 2017 Gallup report of the state of the American workforce. To properly engage employees, construction business owners need to focus on work tasks that lead to increased employee job satisfaction, lowered attrition and improved performance. This usually includes sending your crew to on-the-job training events. While some manufacturers may be canceling or postponing their training, other companies are moving ahead with their training courses, making sure to follow all CDC recommended guidelines. You can head to page 16 in this issue to see all in-person training opportunities still happening over the next year.
VIRTUAL LEARNING While there is nothing like in-person, hand-on training, it's more important to keep the education going virtually than to skip the training all together and organizations should take advantage of these opportunities. Virtual meetings
8
give your crew a chance to get together all at once to view training sessions. This not only increases worker engagement, it also helps bring your employees together for opportunities to address questions and address any gaps in their knowledge you may not be aware of. Many associations have increased the frequency of these virtual events during the pandemic and are happy to share their knowledge for the betterment of the industry. The National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) have always been a leader in conducting webinars for their members. Since the pandemic, the association has increased frequency of their webinars and held virtual meetings to update their members on critical issues facing asphalt contractors and mix producers. A full list of their virtual meetings and webinars can be found at https://member. asphaltpavement.org/Events/Webinars. The Pavement Preservation & Recycling Alliance (PPRA) has partnered with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and have had successful webinar events that have covered topics from cracksealing and chipsealing to cold in-place recycling and more. You can see a full list of their events at https://roadresource.org/webinars. While your company hurries to put safety first during this pandemic, be careful you're not pushing the pause button on critical workplace learning that will help your company be successful once the COVID-19 era ends. Stay safe out there!

he construction industry is in the midst of a digital data revolution as a growing number of contractors migrate to the cloud, leaving paper reports, cumbersome spreadsheets and outdated software behind. In place of inefficient processes that make it harder to foresee long-term project health and guarantee on-time, on-budget delivery, the cloud allows
contractors to focus on real-time data capture and analysis for safer, smarter projects and improved profit margins. And, it’s helping them compete and handle modern project demands, especially in the heavy highway space where projects are fiercely competitive and once won, demand faster completion times and higher quality. If you’re still using paper or

TECHNOLOGY MATTERS unreliable software to manage your business, here are eight reasons your construction organization should consider moving to the cloud:
automated workflows, dashboards and self-service reporting, you can do in minutes what traditionally took days, weeks or months.
REAL-TIME ACCESS TO RELIABLE DATA. According to a recent report from Dodge Data & Analytics, 64% of contractors said data gathering and analysis capabilities have improved in the past three years, with technologies like cloud-based construction software leading the way. Whether you’re working from a desktop at the office, a smartphone on the jobsite or a remote trailer, moving to cloud-based software means you no longer need to be tied to a physical workstation in the back office to access, share or process project data. You can consistently get the information you need, when and where you need it.
A DRAMATIC REDUCTION IN RISKS With access to real-time information, the chance for mistakes and errors — from the back office to the field — is dramatically reduced. You’ll be able to spot problems as or before they occur and resolve issues before they turn into major problems that require costly rework.
zhu difeng
When your data lives in the cloud, changes made in the office are automatically updated for users accessing features in the field, ensuring that your office and the field teams aren’t working off different sets of data. This lessens the potential for costly errors and saves the time that would otherwise be wasted entering information from a variety of manual processes and translating or rekeying data from one software program to another. AN INCREASE IN PRODUCTIVITY The ability to work in real-time translates directly into productivity gains. When information flows seamlessly, questions are answered immediately and bills are paid quicker. With the ability to work in real-time,

A STRONGER DISASTER PLAN A disaster, such as a fire, flood or onpremise server failure, can bring work to a screeching halt. With software based in the cloud, critical data lives in a secure environment and is protected by the latest security protocols and standards. It’s also safe from environmental risks. With regular data backups, work can keep moving even when uncontrollable problems arise. ENHANCED SECURITY As the industry becomes more digitized, protecting data from threats is a top concern. While concerns over data security are a common hesitation for moving to the cloud, providers today are tasked with maintaining the most rigid security measures and consistently watching and planning for the very latest security threats. In fact, this level of security protocol now far surpasses the levels most contractors are able to provide themselves with on-premise data storage. COST SAVINGS The capital costs of hardware, maintenance, IT and additional software licensing required by on-premise software solutions can cost up to four times as much up-front as a cloud-based subscription model. When you add in savings gained from productivity spikes and reduced or redirected labor overhead, moving to the cloud becomes significantly more cost-effective.
SCALING FOR GROWTH With advances in technology, software and data delivery, cloud-based software sets you up to easily scale and adapt the latest technologies to meet your company’s future needs. As technologies across the globe center around the cloud, future advancements will likely require cloud adoption. By investing in the cloud today, you’ll be well positioned for the future. ATTRACTING TALENT For years, contractors have struggled to attract and retain top talent as younger generations choose careers in technology over construction jobs. By implementing the latest cloud-based technologies, tech savvy contractors are faring better at attracting and training younger generations of tech-savvy professionals. In turn, these younger professionals are forging new paths of innovation that are helping contractors achieve even more productivity and profitability. The “cloud” used to be a term that sent people running for the doors. The idea of putting personal or business information in a central, accessible repository in the ether seemed like an unreasonable risk only 10 years ago. But as advances in cloud computing technologies and the security measures surrounding them have shown, the benefits far outweigh any remaining fears. If you haven’t made the switch yet, it’s not too late to embrace the cloud and embark on a journey to safer, smarter projects with improved profit margins.

PRODUCTION NOTES hot mix facility,” Catherine SuttonChoate, director of environmental compliance & product documentation at Astec, Inc. says. “That's the only emission regulation for our industry that is enacted on the Federal level and asphalt plants must hit that standard. Baghouses are the best available control technology to meet that standard.” For a baghouse to function properly, and keep your asphalt plant compliant, there are a few things asphalt producers need to keep in mind. BAGHOUSE MAINTENANCE MATTERS Like anything at your asphalt plant, the baghouse needs regular maintenance in order to ensure proper operation.
Most baghouses need the following items checked for routine maintenance: • Check that all solenoids are functioning properly and replace if necessary. • Check pulse duration, interval and pressure. Monitor pressure drop across the bags. • Monitor the pressure in the manifold to make sure the bags are pulsing at an appropriate pressure. • Visually examine the bags monthly. • Make sure blowpipes are properly aligned to ensure pulse air enters the bag. Never walk on blowpipes as this can warp them and cause misalignment. • Examine venturi’s and be sure they are in good working order as these
“The baghouse is the best available control technology to meet the Federal New Source Performance Standard.” Anything that prevents baghouse bags from cleaning is going to increase the differential pressure across the bags. That in turn increases the overall differential pressure throughout the entire production facility from the drum through the fan. This is why proper maintenance is important.

PRODUCTION NOTES components are what induce the shockwave to go down through the bag. • Check for air leaks in the exhaust system, including aggregate and recycle inlets, connection bands on the ductwork, holes in equipment, access doors not tightened and missing/damaged seals. If these items are not attended to bag performance will decline over time and failure will occur as dust is pulled into the felt. As the resulting pressure drop increases, particulate penetration will escalate due to the need to maintain burner suction. “If plant owners are not performing at least some of the basic maintenance procedures on their baghouse then they can run into problems,” Sutton-Choate says. “Anything that prevents baghouse bags from cleaning is going to increase the differential pressure across the bags. That in turn increases the overall differential pressure throughout the entire production facility from the drum through the fan. “Exhaust fans are only designed to generate a certain amount of static pressure and so if the pressure drop through the equipment gets too high, then the fans simply cannot
“One of the main reasons baghouse bags fail is due to a condition called blinding which causes reduced permeability along the bags.”

generate enough airflow to sustain the production process and production is going to start suffering.” Sutton-Choate says what causes an increase in pressure differentiation across the baghouse is what is known as blinding. Blinding is a condition of reduced bag permeability. It means that something is restricting the air from being able to pass through the felt of the bags. One common way to blind the bag is literally by pulling dust into the felt thereby embedding dust particles into bags. This happens when the differential pressure across the bags increases and the plant exhaust system works harder to pull air through the bags and maintain suction. Sutton-Choate says this is one of the main reasons bags in the industry fail and must be replaced. Blinding can also occur if the temperatures within the baghouse drop below the dew point. This causes moisture to start condensing out of the flue gases which creates mud on the bags, interior walls and everywhere else. "Leakage, which is the silent killer of production, uses up baghouse capacity. It can also lead to condensation inside the baghouse," Sutton-Choate says. "Mud cannot be removed by the cleaning system. It requires somebody
For a baghouse to function successfully today, it not only has to maintain a high level of airflow in order to support the production process, but it also has to do it while also maintaining an extremely high collection efficiency.
to physically get inside the baghouse and scrape the mud off the bags. Plant owners can also remove the bags and work on them externally, but it still requires a physical person to do the work and not the baghouse cleaning system doing it automatically.” UNDERSTANDING THE SIGNIFICANCE OF HYDROLYSIS Another factor that leads to premature bag failure is what is known as hydrolysis or the weakening of the bags due to chemical breakdown. Hydrolysis affects the ability of the bags to clean because it causes them to shrink significantly. This can lead to the blinding previously mentioned, even if the cleaning system is functioning properly. Hydrolysis also causes bags to have weakened fibers, which may result in holes developing since these weakened bags are more susceptible to abrasion by aggregate particles or

PRODUCTION NOTES cleaning at excessive pulse pressures. “Blinding resulting from hydrolysis is the number one reason bags fail in our industry,” Sutton-Choate says. “Bags in an asphalt plant baghouse are prone to hydrolysis because the phenomenon is caused by exposure to moisture at elevated temperatures. This combination of moisture plus heat is exactly what is produced during the aggregate drying process at an asphalt mixing plant.” For the last several years, the industry has been working to educate customers on what hydrolysis is and how they can minimize the effects of it. “We minimize hydrolysis by offering solutions to control the maximum
temperature of the air going into the baghouse because hydrolysis is so dependent on temperature,” SuttonChoate says. Additionally, since moisture is one of the contributing factors to hydrolysis, anything that brings down the moisture content of the aggregate will also help to slow or minimize bag hydrolysis. Proper stockpile management is one the least expensive and most efficient ways to minimize moisture. “For a baghouse to function successfully today, it not only has to maintain a high level of airflow in order to support the production process, but it also has to do it while also maintaining an extremely high
collection efficiency,” Sutton-Choate concludes. “We're dealing with limits now that are one quarter of the Federal limit or less so every time a customer starts up their baghouse, there is zero room for error. We need to help customers get there.”

New screed plate system can achieve 89% density behind the paver

any paving companies know the importance of achieving density right behind the paver when the mix is still at its hottest temperatures. This is why articles on compaction and achieving optimal rolling patterns are consistently some of the top viewed content on our website. Obtaining compaction right behind the paver is also why manufacturers are working on developing higher density screeds that help achieve density levels before a roller even hits the mat. A new type of screed plate has recently been introduced to the market that also helps aid in compaction behind the asphalt paver, but it's not like anything we've seen in the industry before. SPEED MATTERS Stuart and Michael Frost spent hours building roads and acquiring their first equipment fleet of Tonka Toys as young boys. They joined the family construction business at an early age and in 1999
The texture of this screed plate adds a lateral component as well as a longitudinal and vertical component. As the mix enters the OXCLAW immediately multiple forces are applied to the aggregate. At multiple depths, along with the vertical and longitudinal forces, the mix is moved side to side laterally, kneading the aggregate in place until it finds its final resting place. This movement aids in remixing your asphalt, helping with any possible segregation you may have.
they created Mountain Construction Company where you will still see them working on the crew today. This has led to years of firsthand industry experience, knowledge and a yearning to make the job more efficient and cost effective. This has also made them efficient in knowledge of what works and doesn't work so well in our industry. Their idea for a new type of screed came after spending hours underneath a paver trying to change a worn out screed plate in the middle of the night.
DENSITY MATTERS MORE The brothers didn't stop there as they wanted to find a solution to get better density behind the screed as well. That thinking led to a patterned screed plate to aid in compaction and ride. The AXENOX patented screed plate systems provide a 3D progressive textured wave through the OXCLAW, eliminating the stereotype that all screed plates must OXCLAW is a patterned screed plate designed to aid in compaction and ride.
In between probably many frustrated moments, the thought came to them that there had to be a better way. That is when they decided to try and solve the challenge of quickly changing a screed plate and getting better densities behind the screed at the same time. This patented system allows the contractor to remove and replace a screed in about two hours rather than two days. With the new patented AXENOX Screed System, there is no more chiseling out hard bituminous material or screwing off the nuts and working around the electric heating elements to change the plate. Once the aluminum conductor plate is installed, it

does not need to be replaced for the life of the paver.
be smooth. For the first time, there is a 3rd dimensional component applying multiple force vectors which allows the mix to roll and interlock more efficiently than the traditional flat screed plate. The result is higher densities on your uncompacted mat. Currently there are four OXCLAW equipped pavers laying asphalt across the US. Each are showing the same results, no matter the depth laid, mix type, aggregate makeup or A/C polymer used, the densities behind the screed are coming out anywhere from 85% to in some cases 89%. “You can walk across the uncompacted mat and you can feel how dense

it is," Brent Carron, owner of Valley Paving, Inc. says. "The roller operators immediately notice it as well, they are not getting the squish out or leaving the marks and bumps they are used to.” This is because the aggregate isn’t having to swim around to find its place in the more compacted mat. Thermal profiles and mix segregation, both in heat and gradation along with longitudinal joint density, have been a hot topic for the asphalt industry. The texture of this screed plate adds a lateral component as well as a longitudinal and vertical component. As the mix enters the OXCLAW, multiple forces are immediately applied to the aggregate. At multiple depths, along with the vertical and longitudinal forces, the mix is moved side to side laterally which kneads the aggregate in place until it finds its final resting spot. This movement aids in remixing your asphalt, helping with any possible segregation you may have. Owners have been pushing the industry to find ways to increase mat density, reduce aggregate segregation,
provide even consistent thermal temperatures and reduce longitudinal joint failures. Compacting an unconfined edge with the OXCLAW, you will see little to no “squish out” at the edges as they are more stable. This lends itself to better, and more consistent, density numbers on both sides of the longitudinal joint. "There is nothing else like this in the asphalt industry," Carron says. "The idea that a non-smooth screed can produce an even, flat surface is crazy enough, yet this screed does so much more. The compaction is amazing from what we have seen so far. Our crew is getting 87% to 89% density before the knock down roller even hits it. And once the knock down roller does hit the
mat, it barely compresses. No squish out on the edges, no cut marks from turning, it's like it's already stiff, yet still 280° F." With 3D angles of attack, the OXCLAW is able to produce a higher density as well as a more uniform and smooth surface. AXENOX has been putting this screed system to the test in Minnesota, Wyoming and Kansas with three different companies all experiencing the same results, higher compaction and smoothness. "We're still finding out new advantages of owning this screed and what it can do for this industry. To date, we don’t have any complaints and the owners of the roadways we are paving are in awe and baffled at the same time, and can't believe the results we're getting," Carron says. "We have a lot more tons of asphalt to lay with this screed, but so far, it's made a believer out of many. I’ve been in this industry since I was in diapers, and I don’t know of another advancement with the asphalt paver that compares to this."

Even though the screed plate system features a wave, the result of the mat is smooth.

Martin Marietta bid the job for each city separately, but when they were awarded both contracts they decided to combine the work and complete them as one job, according to Andrew Chaulk, project manager, Martin Marietta. The contractor milled 40,000 sq. yds 1 ½ in. thick of pavement and constructed a 2-in. overlay using 4400 tons of hot mix asphalt. “We looked at them as two separate projects and bid them accordingly,” Chaulk says. “Once we were awarded both contracts, we treated them as one job. It was a straightforward operation. A pretty standard job that went really well.”
The 2019 Larry H. Lemon Quality in Construction Award recognized Martin Marietta, Lakewood, CO, for its work involving more than 40,000 sq. yds. of milling and 4400 tons of paving on West Belleview Avenue, the dividing street between Colorado cities Lakewood and Denver.
The resulting work, which received a smoothness bonus, was named one of the 10 recipients of the National Asphalt Pavement Association’s (NAPA) 2019 Larry H. Lemon Quality in Construction Award for excellence in construction of an asphalt pavement utilizing less than 50,000 tons of asphalt.

USING A WIDER MILL Chaulk says milling was done first over four days. Crews lowered all manholes and water valves and a subcontractor set up traffic control. They worked on the outside lane first, diverting traffic into the middle, then reversed and milled the inside lane while traffic was diverted to the outside. Martin Marietta hired a subcontractor to handle traffic control for them and there as many as 10 people controlling traffic through the
work zone. “It got extremely busy out there with traffic running by the work zone,” he says. “There was quite a bit of activity all the time.” Chaulk says arrow boards were set on both ends of the work zone and the subcontractor coned off the work area running a cone line the full length of
the street to separate the traffic from the work zone. Flaggers were used behind and in front of the mill and were also positioned strategically throughout the job to help with cross streets and to keep drivers from getting too close behind the mill. Crews used a 12-ft. Wirtgen milling

machine throughout the job because the Lakewood contract contained a smoothness specification. “We carried that same thought process through onto the Denver side even though Denver didn’t have that spec,” Chaulk says. “The 12-ft. mill is 5 ft. larger than a standard 7-ft. mill and that 7-ft. mill puts you right in the middle of the travel lane,” he says. “On the second pass with a 7-ft. mill you usually end up leaving a small ridge that you don’t notice when
50
ASPHALT CONTRACTOR OCTOBER 2020
ACON1020_46-53_JobsiteNAPA_J.indd 50
you’re driving but that does affect the smoothness. A 12-ft. mill typically pushes that ridge to within a few inches of where the striping will be, depending on the lane width, so it doesn’t impact the profilograph.” Martin Marietta used one mill supported by a seven-person crew and between eight and 12 trucks hauling the millings away. “One person operated the mill, one person on the ground was responsible for guiding the trucks, getting them in place and backing them to the mill,” Chaulk says. “We had one person in the rear keeping an eye on milling depth and alerting the operator to anything in the pavement he might need to be aware of, a skid steer operator picking up extra debris, a broom operator and one laborer.” When milling was complete, the milled section was swept, and the traffic
control subcontractor applied temporary markings replicating the original striping before the road was reopened to traffic. WMA, SMA COMBINATION YIELDS BENEFITS Chaulk says that standard stone matrix asphalt (SMA) was specified in both bids. Lakewood also wanted to be environmentally conscious and wanted to be able to market the paving job as a green product by lowering the energy consumption in production of the mix. “Lakewood was interested in trying it to see what the benefits of warm mix asphalt were and what the challenges were, so they spec’d it for their half of the road,” Chaulk says. So when producing the mix, Martin Marietta added ZycoTherm, which Chaulk says lowered the production temperature of the mix from the typical
www.ForConstructionPros.com/Asphalt

350°F to 275°F when placed. That also appealed to Lakewood because WMA enables the road to be opened to traffic sooner. “You have to let the mix cool to 170°F before we can open it to traffic and when you’re using WMA it only has to cool from 275°F to 170°F, not from 350°F so can let traffic on it that much sooner,” he says. “ZycoTherm increases the workability life of the asphalt and basically enables you to pave in colder weather,” Chaulk says. “We’ve used it before, but this was the first time we used it with SMA. We’ve also never used it with that much tonnage.” Chaulk says the 12-person paving crew used a 10-ft. Cat paver and three steel drum rollers operating in vibratory mode. He says the work was straightforward, completed much like any paving job. Because the milled pavement had been open to traffic, it was swept again before tack drivers sprayed asphalt emulsion onto the area to be paved for the day. A first-time effort combining warm mix asphalt and stone matrix asphalt to pave a road where each half was owned by a different city resulted in a 2019 National Asphalt Pavement Association honor for Martin Marietta, Lakewood, CO.

He says the WMA/SMA mix acted just like a normal mix, for the most part. “For the first couple of truckloads it was a little tough to get through the machine because it was real sticky product, but once we got it worked through the machine it was pretty similar to a standard SMA mix,” Chaulk says. Chaulk says the only change they made in the paving process was adding an extra roller. “We added an extra roller to work out the roller lines farther back behind the paver and we could do that because the mix was cooling slower because it was WMA,” he says.

Asphalt’s ability to make meaningful economic and sustainable impacts makes the material ripe for opportunity
O
f the 2.7 million miles of paved roads in the U.S., 94 percent are surfaced with asphalt1. There are a few likely reasons asphalt is used more often than other pavement alternatives – for one, studies have shown that asphalt pavement has a high return on investment thanks to the material’s durability and given it requires less energy to produce compared to concrete. Asphalt is also recognized as a great renewable resource. In fact, reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP), also known as recycled asphalt, is an attractive solution given the reduction that using recycled asphalt can have on project costs while also helping to provide a more sustainable project. According to the National Asphalt Pavement Association, it is estimated that the recycling of asphalt pavement saves the American taxpayer more than $2.5 billion and saves more than 60 million cubic yards of landfill space each year. Asphalt’s ability to make meaningful economic and sustainable impacts makes the material ripe for opportunity – this is an important area for new research, innovation and education to ensure correct use and safe handling of the recycled product.

A LOOK BACK: THE ‘GOLDEN AGE’ OF RECYCLING AND THE 2000’S REVIVAL Over the years, use of RAP has varied in popularity based largely on what is happening in the world, including economic pressures and other outside variables. The 1970s was the first time RAP was commonly used. Traditionally, recycling asphalt involves removing old asphalt pavement and taking it through a series of processes to produce RAP. Then, RAP is blended with new aggregates and asphalt binder to create a new,

partially recycled, asphalt mix used to repave roads. When the recycling of asphalt became popular in the 1970s, it emerged during the energy crisis as an economical option, and the quantity of RAP used in mixtures could range as high as 50 percent. Towards the end of the 1970s and into the 1980s, RAP use declined due to an increase in affordable asphalt binder supply, and performance issues like excessive cracking were observed in some recycled roads, as technology at the time was not mature enough. In the 1990s, Superpave, an innovative new specification at the time, was introduced to prevent pavement deformation in the form of rutting. It limited the content of RAP in the binder and was also focused on preventing fatigue and low temperature cracking. With little economic benefit, RAP use declined to about 5 percent. In the 2000s, the high cost of asphalt binders influenced those in the industry to revisit
recycled asphalt, which has the potential to help save time and money in addition to being a sustainable option. By 2017, approximately 20 percent of RAP was being used on average in asphalt mixtures in the U.S. Today, as government regulations and organizational commitments to sustainable practices continue to grow around the world, additional attention to sustainable options like recycled asphalt is critical. PROPERTIES OF RECYCLED ASPHALT For recycled asphalt, the quality and performance can be affected by the specific recycled materials used. Understanding the potential affects that different recycled materials can have will help ensure a quality finished product. In the end, recycled asphalt will need to withstand significant weight on roads as well as extreme weather conditions, both of which are major factors that cause stress on road material. When blended correctly, with the right technology and machinery, RAP containing pavement performs similarly to pavements built exclusively of virgin materials. Use of RAP helps minimize environmental impact by preserving natural resources, reducing landfill
waste, and minimizing energy spent by additional aggregate quarrying, asphalt production and transport. In addition to being a more sustainable option, the ease of use in construction is a key advantage for RAP over concrete pavement. Not only can RAP be easily added to new mix at the hot mix plant, only a single top layer requires being milled off and replaced. Moreover, there are technologies that allow for 100% in-situ recycling. Typically a road train of equipment mills and scrubs the asphalt pavement, mixes it with additives and new binders and places it back in its original place to create a fully recycled pavement. A new pavement can be produced without a single load of material being transported around. Usually this process is used to rehabilitate the structural pavement layers, and an overlay with hot mix is placed on top to preserve the in-situ recycled layers. A process like this is impossible with concrete pavement, where the whole pavement structure must be dug up and removed in order to replace with new layers. In addition, Understanding the affects different recycled materials can have will help ensure a quality finished product.

Advanced solutions are being developed to enhance the performance of RAP.
recycled concrete cannot typically be used in the new concrete pavement, and can only be used in bottom construction layers, as a filler, or landfilled. So, why not turn to completely using recycled asphalt? It’s important to fully understand how the percentage of recycled asphalt used in the overall asphalt mix can affect the final product. Since the 1970s, the industry has debated this topic and the concern that the addition of high percentages of RAP could result in an undesirable chemical composition, prone to accelerate aging and eventually to significant stiffness of the asphalt mix leading to premature failure of the roadway. Increasing stiffness of an asphalt mix improves resistance to permanent deformation like rutting, but it can also cause increases in brittleness and be less resistant to fatigue and thermal cracking2. RECYCLING OF ADDITIONAL MATERIALS Besides RAP, common materials from outside industries that are recycled in asphalt pavements include rubber from used tires, asphalt roofing shingles, and steel and blast furnace slags. These materials have unique characteristics that ultimately impact the final recycled
60
asphalt product. For example, used tire rubber can enhance overall pavement performance; meanwhile, steel slag can enhance aggregates strength, but both require the right technology in order to gain the associated positive effects. In addition to the specific materials, the actual recycling process can also affect performance. Significant advances in technology in the last decade have amplified the types of recycled materials that can be used in recycled asphalt. In addition, industry research continues around the changes in chemical composition based on the recycled material. This research is critical to determine which recycled materials could be chemically combative during the blending and diffusion process, and ultimately effect the end product. There is always a potential risk in recycling asphalt if companies can’t confirm the materials that were used to pave the road previously. This is important because when asphalt is recycled there are materials, like specific plastics, that are not compatible with the blending process. There are many different types of plastic, which is why research plays such an important role – recycling foreign materials like plastic requires knowing the specific way it should be prepared and the maximum amount of that material that can be used.
LONGEVITY OF RECYCLED ASPHALT Advanced solutions are developed to enhance the performance of RAP mixes. For example, storage silos for hot mix help fuse old and new binders together and produce a homogenous pattern in a mixture, making it more uniform and causing less cracking. The longevity and performance of a road ultimately depends on the type of road, stresses on the surface of the pavement (e.g. heavy trucks on highways vs. smaller cars driving around a parking lot) and weather conditions. The surface of the pavement is the most stressed layer, so using recycled asphalt below the top layer where it will not be exposed to salt, water and freezing weather can help extend the life of the road. The future of recycled asphalt, whether it includes improved longevity, innovation around new technology or the discovery of new materials that can be recycled during the blending process will all require continued industry research, communication among industry experts and funding to ensure the quality of the asphalt isn’t compromised along the way. Recycled asphalt has come a long way since its first big wave in the 1970s, and the industry is responsible for ensuring the final product is the highest quality and produces a safe experience and sustainable roads for years to come. Ways to Keep Your Construction Crew Healthy
Healthy workers are productive workers — less likely to call in sick and more likely to be alert, efficient and safe all shift long. Here are some things you can do to help
E
mployee health on the job has been in the news a lot recently for obvious reasons, but shouldn’t it be something we focus on all the time? After all, healthy workers are productive workers — they’re less likely to call in sick and more likely to be alert, efficient and safe all shift long. Here are six healthy habits to encourage with your crew. • Hydration. Construction work is physically demanding. The days are long, and the work can be hot much of the year. Your employees need to stay hydrated to stay healthy — and productive. Some studies show a 3-4% drop in hydration can lead
66
ASPHALT CONTRACTOR OCTOBER 2020
ACON1020_66-68_LastExit_J.indd 66
to a 25-50% drop in productivity. Encourage workers to keep a refillable water bottle nearby at all times and provide a water cooler where they can fill up during their shift. Try not to keep coffee brewing all day and don’t offer soda as an option because caffeine accelerates dehydration. • Healthy eating. Grabbing fast food or a gas station meal is convenient, but it’s not helping anyone’s productivity on the job — or their waistlines. Make “meal planning” a topic of one of your employee meetings or safety talks and offer tips on how to pack a healthy lunch that will keep workers full and give them energy to get through the shift. (You’ll find plenty of examples just for construction workers online.) If you keep snacks around the jobsite, ditch the candy bars and chips and replace them with nuts and easy-to-eat fruits and vegetables like apples, bananas and carrot sticks. • Exercise. Equipment operators in particular spend a lot of the day sitting and performing repetitive tasks. A regular exercise routine — whether that’s walking, running, swimming, biking, weight training or some combination of activities — helps keep the muscles in shape and prevent injuries. It’s a great stress reliever, too. Think about offering your employees a discounted gym membership or other incentives to keep moving. • Rest. Getting enough sleep is key to staying alert and productive on the job. You can’t control your workers’ sleep habits, but you can give them space — and encouragement — to re-energize during their shift. Construction is a demanding job,
and breaks do make a difference, especially when shifts are long and the days are hot. Set aside a cool, quiet place where employees can rest their eyes and their minds for a few minutes at a time. • Basic hygiene. Anyone who didn’t know the importance of handwashing before certainly does now, but it’s not always easy on a construction job. Consider investing in mobile hand-washing stations that you can place in key areas around the worksite. Always make hand sanitizer available. And of course, urge employees to stay home if they don’t feel well. It’s important to build a culture where workers don’t feel like they’ll be penalized for calling in sick. • Wearables. Information is power, so consider providing wearable devices that help employees monitor important health information. These devices can track activity levels, heart and respiratory rates, and even sleep quality. Implementing wearable technology benefits you as the employer, but also provides value to employees — both on and off the job. Ultimately, every person’s health is his or her own responsibility, but as an employer you can influence positive behavior and create an organization where healthy habits are recognized and rewarded. It’s a win-win, after all — healthy workers contribute to a healthy bottom line. Lonnie Fritz is senior market professional, construction industries at Caterpillar Inc.
