JONATHAN KOZLOWSKI, EDITOR JKOZLOWSKI@ ACBUSINESSMEDIA.COMWell, with the revealing of two rose-colored lines, there went my plans.
According to a piece by Marnie Hunter, CNN Medical Analyst Dr. Leana Wen says that the country is in “a phase in the pandemic where people need to make their own decisions based on their medical circumstances as well as their risk tolerance when it comes to contracting Covid-19.” Even though all cases, deaths, and hospitalizations are all trending down as of October 3, the virus is still out there.
It feels inevitable at this point that we’ll run into the virus somewhere, somehow. With people more comfortable attending in-person events, World of Concrete right around the corner, and ConExpo soon after, it might be worth it to refresh your team on safety protocols, best practices, and recognizing the signs and symptoms. To Dr. Wen’s point, it’s our responsibility to make decisions to protect ourselves as those choices might affect those around you.
Anyway, I guess what I’m trying to say is: continue to play it smart.
Thanks.

Internal Curing With Lightweight Aggregate Creates High-Quality Concrete
Internal curing enhances bridge deck construction in Utah.
The Expanded Shale, Clay and Slate Institutesurface to the depth the curing water penetrated, internal curing ensures an
even moisture distribution throughout the concrete. The even water distribution reduces the strain on different sections of the material as water is consumed. This process does not replace surface curing but instead works with it to make more robust concrete.
The details behind the internal curing process and maximizing concrete’s potential.
Contractors can increase the speed and ease of placing concrete with the latest technologies. But even the most advanced equipment cannot significantly enhance the quality of concrete. To do this, the actual materials that make up the concrete should be considered—especially the type of aggregate used within the mix.
Using lightweight aggregate made from expanded shale, clay or slate (ESCS) is a simple, economical and sustainable way to help concrete reach its maximum potential. Because ESCS develops and retains a pore structure while being heated in a rotary kiln, it can supply water throughout the concrete mix when saturated. After the concrete
has set, this water slowly releases to cure the concrete from the inside. The process is known as internal curing and provides several benefits to concrete, including lowered permeability, reduced early age shrinkage, reduced warping, and improved curing conditions in the field.
All these benefits can help contractors increase the quality of concrete they place as well as their ability to work with challenging applications and field conditions, allowing them to secure more business due to their improved efficiency and final product. Let's look at the internal curing process and explain the details behind its ability to maximize concrete’s potential.
WHAT IS INTERNAL CURING?
In general, internal curing refers to the process through which concrete is cured from the inside out. Whereas conventionally cured concrete cures from its
Internal curing does require a couple more steps than conventional curing. However, these steps are easily incorporated into normal preparation and batching. The first step is to plan to replace a small portion of normal-weight concrete sand with an equal volume of fine ESCS lightweight aggregate. For almost all applications, scientific evidence indicates that 7 lbs. of internal curing water per 100 lbs. of cementitious material is appropriate, but confirm with ESCS suppliers if this ratio is correct for your application.
Once the amount of fine ESCS lightweight aggregate needed is determined, the concrete producer will need to prewet the material. This soaking can typically be accomplished in a few days to ensure the material has absorbed the correct amount of water. Then, allow the aggregate to drain for 12 to 15 hours prior to batching.
Though this process includes additional preparation, it enhances the quality of concrete substantially. It also improves on-site curing, making it easier and more efficient to place.
REDUCE PERMEABILITY & FIGHT EARLY AGE CRACKING
Because internally cured concrete reduces the strain caused by poor curing, it mitigates early age microcracking. As such, internally cured concrete can be less permeable as it reduces the number and size of cracks when compared to conventionally cured concrete. This reduces the chance of corrosion due to chloride attack, helping to prolong the lifespan and durability of the concrete in general.
But reducing cracking is not the only way internally cured concrete creates a less permeable material. Internal curing also strengthens the bond between the aggregate and the cementitious matrix around it—known as the interfacial transitional zone (ITZ). The ITZ often represents a weak point in concrete for two reasons—the smooth surface of normal weight aggregates and the strain caused by differences in the properties of the aggregates and the surrounding cement paste.
Surface curing only penetrates a small distance into the concrete. The use of internal curing evenly distributes additional curing water throughout the concrete mixture. This additional water does not contribute to the water-cementitious ratio (w/cm). As concrete sets, available mix water is consumed and stresses begin to develop due to a lack of water needed to fully hydrate the cementitious materials. At this point, the water is drawn from the pores of the saturated lightweight aggregates into the cement matrix. This helps to reduce chemical shrinkage to a point where the concrete can gain enough strength to minimize cracking.
Contractors that take advantage of these benefits can more easily satisfy project owners, improving their company’s reputation and possibly securing more business as a result.
REDUCE CURLING & WARPING
Caused by dissimilar moisture levels creating uplift at joints and slab edges, curling and warping is an out-of-plane deformation of the corners, edges and
Internally cured concrete strengthens a New York bridge deck. The Expanded Shale, Clay and Slate Institute
surface of a pavement, slab or wall panel from its original shape slab. Providing a uniform relative humidity through the thickness of a slab decreases the risk of curling and warping. To help regulate moisture levels, water from saturated ESCS lightweight aggregate desorbs evenly throughout the concrete mix. In a study conducted by Wei and Hansen (2008), internally cured concrete mixtures reduced warping by 70%. The mixes used a 0.45 w/cm ratio and were dried for 16 days.
When concrete producers use ESCS lightweight aggregate to provide uniform relative humidity throughout the concrete mix, they can provide projects with truer slab shapes to reduce fatigue failure.
IMPROVE CURING IN THE FIELD
Because the additional water for curing is distributed throughout the mix, internally cured concrete reduces issues caused by low humidity, high heat, direct sunlight and poor curing practices. Since these conditions make it more challenging for concrete to retain moisture, they can amplify the degree of strain conventionally cured concrete undergoes. More strain can translate to more early age cracking, greater shrinkage and weaker concrete in general.
Studies have shown the use of internal curing can reduce the duration of external curing by approximately 50% when using the curing effected zone as the measure. This could have a significant effect on schedules.
MAXIMIZE CONCRETE’S POTENTIAL
Complementing today's most innovative concrete products, internally curing concrete results in a stronger, more
durable product. It also makes repairs more resilient by reducing the strain that concrete that is only surface cured must endure. Because it improves curing when concrete is placed in low humidity, high heat and intensely sunny weather, internally cured concrete can speed up projects that would be otherwise delayed unexpectedly.
For these reasons, this product can help contractors more efficiently complete projects without having to compromise the quality of concrete they place. While it does require additional steps, the outcomes far outweigh the added effort. Contractors who can incorporate internal curing into their projects can improve the concrete they place, potentially leading to more satisfied project owners and increased business.

ACI-certified personnel on jobsites, verifying the status of certifications has never been more important.
VERIFYING CERTIFICATION IS FAST & EASY
Adobe Stock Images | By freshideaIncreasingly more building codes, specifications, and agencies are requiring ACI-certified workers on projects.
Having ACI-certified concrete professionals on your project team is a great value proposition that can help you win more work. Project owners can award jobs to certified contractors with confidence, knowing the work will be performed to the highest quality. Specifiers and others are assured that concrete testing, placing, handling and inspecting are performed correctly and in compliance with codes and standards. Plus, with increasingly more building codes, specifications and agencies requiring
“You don’t want to take on a job and then realize certification is specified and you don’t have any people or subs with up-to-date certification,” says Steve Lloyd, founder of Lloyd Concrete Services and MAXXCRETE Concrete Flooring, both based in Rustburg, Va. Lloyd, who also volunteers as an authorized examiner for the American Concrete Institute’s Concrete Flat work Finisher certification program, says he frequently receives calls from people who need to get certified so they can mobilize on a job. “Now they’re scrambling, and I can’t do that overnight. Certification is a process that cannot be rushed.”
To avoid that scenario for his own companies, Lloyd asks potential hires if they are certified during the interview process. His front office staff then verifies job applicants’ certifications by going to ACI’s Certified Personnel Directory.
Lloyd Concrete Services and MAXXCRETE
Concrete.org/verify is an online data base that houses nearly 130,000 active ACI certifications. Using the webpage to look up a certified individual is as simple as entering the person’s name or certification ID number. Users also can search by program area (certification category) to find the total number of certified individuals in a given area.
In 2021, ACI launched the ACI Cer tification Verify mobile app for Android and iOS platforms. Using the same functionality and search capabilities as concrete.org/verify, the app makes it convenient to verify while in the field. It’s a useful resource for jobsite supervi sors and other members of the project team, as well as for certified individuals seeking to provide proof of their cer tification status.
Project owners and specifiers require ACI certification to ensure qualified people are working on their projects.
Concrete Flooring will pay to get employees trained and certified if they aren’t already.
Lloyd Concrete
“ACI certi fication is very important,” says Lloyd, who himself is a certified concrete flatwork finisher and technician, specialty commercial/indus trial flatwork finisher and technician, fiber installer, and pervious concrete installer. “Our company has a repu tation for delivering top-quality, flat floors, and that reputation allows us to get jobs, negotiate prices and charge what we do.
You cannot do that without good people. Our people are properly trained and produce quality work, and that comes from certification.”
According to Lloyd, about 90% of his companies’ projects are commercial, and many of those projects are for Fortune 500 companies. While some jobs have required Lloyd to turn in paperwork proving that employees are certified, he says most verification requests come from third-party testing agencies hired by clients for their projects. He has found it simpler for both his companies and those testing agencies to refer them to ACI’s online database. It takes minutes to look up a certification.
SPECIFYING CERTIFICATION
Bob Simonelli, FACI, director of construction services at Structural Services Inc. (SSI), is among those who include ACI certification requirements in their specifications. The New Smyrna Beach, Fla.-based company specializes in commercial and industrial concrete floor design, repair, and restoration.
“We want to get more qualified finishers on the job for our big-box retail clients, so we specify ACI certification 100% of the time for those projects,” says Simonelli.
Simonelli verifies ACI certifications when contractors submit qualifications for SSI projects. Using ACI’s Verify app, it only takes him a few minutes to confirm the certification type.
“I’m usually in the field, so the app is pretty convenient for me. If I am in the office in front of a laptop, I might use the website,” he says.
Simonelli also does his part to help finishers get certified. He helps lead the ACI Specialty/Commercial Industrial Concrete Flatwork Finisher certification course at World of Concrete each year, and he has even traveled internationally to conduct the course.
“I’ve been doing this for 20 years. It’s a great program and will continue to grow as long as participants are on board with it and are there to learn,” says Simonelli. “It’s a good thing for the industry to have properly trained, qualified personnel.”

VERIFY & PROMOTE CERTIFICATION IN MARKETING EFFORTS
Verifying ACI certification ensures you have a committed, skilled workforce. Advertising your team’s certifications can help build your reputation with clients and project owners and secure their trust in you and your company. Through proof of certification, you are guaranteeing that your team will perform concrete construction, testing and/or inspection up to codes and standards for safe building. What’s more, when certified individuals are on jobsites, everyone on the team works within the same guidelines and follows the same set of standards. Excessive rework is avoided. Jobsite safety is improved.
Promoting certification also is an effective way to show clients and project partners that your team is not complacent when it comes to staying on top of the latest best practices. Because working with concrete is a skill that needs to be periodically evaluated, individuals must recertify every five years to keep their certifications active.
And finally, certification can make you and your team eligible for more projects. Many local, state, national and international building codes, specifications and agencies require ACI certification. As an example, says Steve Lloyd of Lloyd Concrete, “It’s stated in ACI 301 – Specifications for Structural Concrete that you should have a certified flatwork finisher on your projects. If you’re going to include ACI standards and specifications in your project’s documents, you should follow their guidelines.”
To verify certifications while on jobsites, download the Verify app via Google Play or the Apple App Store. For more information, visit ACICertification.org.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF ACI CERTIFICATION
American Concrete Institute certification programs help ensure quality benchmarks are being met on concrete construction projects. Course participants gain in-depth knowledge of concrete, learn the proper methods and procedures for sitework and become familiar with concrete codes and standards.
ACI’s first and most popular certification offered is Concrete Field Testing Technician. By the late 1970s, ready-mixed concrete producers realized incorrect or low test results were often the result of poor testing rather than poor concrete. This gave rise to various state-level certification programs to make sure field technicians were properly trained.
When it became clear that a national, standardized program was needed, those in the ready-mixed industry wanted an independent, nonprofit technical organization to deliver the program. ACI took the lead, establishing a certification committee in 1980 and launching the Concrete Field Testing Technician – Grade 1 certification in 1983.
Since then, ACI has issued more than 375,000 field testing technician certifications and launched nearly 30 additional certification programs for technicians, craftsmen, supervisors, inspectors, managers, and others. New programs added in recent years include Post-Installed Concrete Anchor Installation Inspector, Nondestructive Testing Specialist—Concrete Strength and Shotcrete Inspector.

What To Consider With Battery-Powered Equipment
Traditionally gas-powered engines have been the most powerful, but advances in both equipment design and battery technology allow for enhanced capabilities and more efficient power utilization. These advances mean there are more companies moving to cordless jobsites.
Equipment is a huge investment and proper maintenance to extend the prod uct's lifetime is one of the most impor tant ways to protect that investment. There are a few key equipment aspects to keep in mind when considering jobsite safety and weighing productivity.
Emissions. Battery-powered equip ment is completely emissions and fume free, limiting the time your workers interact with gas. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has strict regulations regarding the handling and storing gas on the jobsite. By going cordless contractors can eliminate the need to set up things such as gas cages, saving time and money. Additionally, it can eliminate regulatory safety pro tocols around gas storage and proper use in equipment saving the possibility of repair or replacement due to bad maintenance.
Safety Technology. The specialized engineering of a tool can physically reduce a worker’s risk of injury with little to no change in their workflow. Battery-powered equipment allows for the use of sensor technology inside the product providing safety technology that is designed and built to protect users whenever equipment is running, without added thought.
These safety technologies can aid in control and reduce kickback dur ing bind-up situations delivering a safer experience. Tools featuring these
solutions typically have engineered set points to automatically stop the equipment or tool when thresholds are reached for a specific amount of time. In a core drill, for example, an internal gyroscope monitors angular momentum and uses onboard sensors to remove power from the motor before it rotates more than 45 degrees. At that engineered limit, the equipment will no longer fight the user.
Anti-vibration. The electronic technology in battery-powered solu tions reduces the vibration and therefore reduces the chance of these types of long-term safety concerns. The risk of harm from vibration, for which there is no OSHA standard, depends on inten sity, frequency, and length of exposure. Vibrations can affect the entire body bringing symptoms like back pain or shakiness. This can be experienced after many day-to-day activities such as a long car or boat trip or after operating heavy equipment, including bulldozers and jackhammers. Due to extended exposure to vibration, skilled trade workers are known to suffer from localized HandArm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS), when vibrations gradually cause per manent changes in tendons, muscles, bones, and joints. A well-known disor der from HAVS is “Vibration-Induced White Finger,” or “Raynaud’s disease,” which causes fingers and toes to feel numb and cold in response to tempera tures or stress.
Anti-vibration technology can be found in the electronics and mechanics of a tool. However, mechanical antivibration technology in a breaker, for example, includes its spring design and floating head separating the head from the striking mechanism. This keeps the
user further from the point of impact to cushion the impact. This reduction allows the user to experience less fatigue and reduced circulatory issues specifi cally around their hands.
Cordless. The second most report able OSHA violation is slips, trips, and falls so battery-powered equipment eliminates that extra tripping hazard that people must navigate. Batterypowered equipment allows users to work both emissions-free and cord-free, ulti mately giving users a new way to com plete the application more seamlessly and efficiently.
Noise. Hearing damage can occur with long-term exposure to loud noises or the sudden blast potentially bursting an eardrum. Battery-powered equipment typically operates at lower decibels help ing to prevent hearing damage or loss. The lower noise level also means users can communicate while they’re operating the tools, adding safety and productivity.
The mindset on today’s jobsites has changed. Workers realize that the his toric safety risks they used to accept as “part of the job” are now addressable. Along with greater safety for workers, productivity is boosted by fewer days away from work due to injuries. Batterypowered equipment offers an effective alternative to gas engine noise and vibra tions, providing a better experience and increased safety and productivity.
As Director of Product Management, Kevin Gee is responsible for overseeing the strategy and product development for Milwaukee Tool's MX FUEL Cordless Equipment System and Concrete solutions.

Green Initiatives Serve Communities & The Bottom Line
Shelby Materials customizes an Astec Industries BMH Central Mix Plant to meet sustainable goals.
Investing in equipment that not only helps you meet production goals but also contributes to your company's Environmental Health & Safety initiatives is a trend that will continue to grow in the construction industry. Governments and communities increasingly expect businesses to support broader goals, such as sustainability, and construction business owners need to be ready to step up in order to stand out.
Shelby Materials, a ready-mix concrete and aggregate material supplier throughout Greater Indianapolis and Central Indiana, knows the importance of differentiating your business in a particularly competitive market. “[We] began as a small-town-company and we are still family-owned and operated,” says Matt Haehl, President of Shelby Materials. The company has 10 plant locations and purchased their first BMH Astec plant six years ago. They knew the Franklin plant would be a BMH system as well, but wanted to add new features that would allow them to accomplish community and environmental goals.
Saving about 160+ tons of carbon, the Shelby team brought in reclaimers, used liquid fly ash for the 6,000 yards of pavement, and used type 1L cement with an admixture product to reduce the cement content. By doing this, they did not have to use sealers on the concrete and further lowered their environmental impact.
“We had a great relationship with BMH for years and this being our third permanent BMH plant, but first under the Astec umbrella,” Haehl says. “We had an idea of what we want to work with in Franklin and the Astec team are the professionals in the plant construction business so they took our ideas and made suggestions for the location and ran with it.”
The suggestions included fullyenclosed insulated panels to help with heat retention, a gravity-fed system instead of conveyors (saving further money on maintenance), a state-of-theart interior “on demand dust control system, and automatic pressure system outside—saving thousands of dollars each year on filters alone.
ON-DEMAND HEATING
Drying aggregates requires heat and that energy usage adds up quickly. Plant owners can counteract those prices by using on-demand heating systems.
Shelby installed a Polarmatic System which uses the heat much more efficiently and finding them savings.
“When we’re heating materials, we’re going to be using all that gas and everything to heat our water anyhow,” Harman says. “With the Polarmatic, instead of just having the flue gasses or the heat exhaust into the atmosphere, we redirect that to each and every ag bin. We have valves that will turn on or turn off depending on how often we want to put that heat into each individual aggregate, whether it's the course or the fine. So essentially, we're utilizing something that we already had to give us a better quality of a product.”
Shelby’s New Astec BMH Central Mix Plant At A Glance
• Fully enclosed with insulated panels (Green System)
• Gravity feed aggregate and cement (Green System)
• On-Demand aggregate heating system (Green System)
• Double feed aggregate handling system (36 in. wide belts, 750 tons/hour)
• Aggregate storage bins (370-ton capacity, 6 compartments)
• Aggregate weigh hopper (12-yard, 40,000-lb. capacity)
• Cement storage bins ( 480-ton capacity, 6 compartments)

• Bolt in liners for aggregate loading hoppers and aggregate storage bins
• 304 Stainless steel water holding hoppers
• Central dust collection system (Green System)
CONSISTENT SUPPORT AT EVERY STEP
“With the BMH Astec transition, service has never been better,” says Haehl. “Now that service is stateside, they're pretty close to us if we need anything and it’s really been a pretty easy transition.””
And the partnership with Astec and Shelby will continue for years to come as they navigate a sustainable roadmap for the future together.

WearCOAT 440FS Epoxy Floor Coating
A common issue with cool-temperature floor coating jobs, amine blush is an oily surface imperfection caused by moisture or dew settling on uncured epoxy. While not fatal to the job, cleaning that blush slows projects from on-time completion. To help avoid amine blush, Coatings for Industry Inc.’s WearCOAT 440FS is a fast-setting epoxy floor coating in a blush-resistant formula.
Contractors report that WearCOAT 440FS is easy to apply evenly and consistently. Most importantly, the high-grade formula has proven superior in allowing them to take on projects through winter months when higher humidity and cooler concrete substrates can yield this unwelcome problem. Contractors can count on this blush-resistant formula for flooring projects that are partially or completely exposed to cooler, seasonal temperatures with higher humidity. WearCOAT 440FS is also ideal for use on floors in refrigerated, cold storage areas.

Wirtgen's SP 124(i) Slipform Paver
The SP 124(i) is a 4-track paver that can be configured for paving at a working width of 12 meters and fits seamlessly into the fleet-wide operating concept of slipform pavers from WIRTGEN. The machine is fitted with the latest generation of the integrated dowel bar inserter. The dowel bars are extracted from the magazine by a chain feed system with an endless chain and automatically transported to the insertion location. “Smart” cylinders with displacement sensors precisely position the dowel bar inserter at the desired locations. The high degree of automation reduces the proportion of manual work required, increases process reliability, and, ultimately, the cost-effectiveness of the process.

Three machines, one goal. Highest quality.
WPS 62 (i): The WPS 62(i) placer/spreader rounds off WIRTGEN’s slipform paving product portfolio. It is always called for in situations where high productivity is required when paving over pre-placed steel rebar or when concrete can only be supplied from the side. Field-tested and proven slipform pavers like the SP 62(i) com pact the concrete placed and spread before them and pave it true to grade and slope. A texture curing machine like the TCM 180(i) can produce a transverse, diagonal or longitudinal surface texture and spray a homogeneous coating of a curing agent onto the concrete surface. The result is a concrete surface that fulfils even the highest quality standards. North Dakota Road Builder Places 75,000 Cubic Feet of Concrete A Day
so this road needed to be reconstructed to raise the road out of the flood plain within two construction seasons.
A stretch of highway needed repaving, widening, and lifting. The contractor needed a machine to handle all three quickly.
Interstate 29 runs from Missouri north and transitions into Highway 75 as it crosses the border on its way to Winnipeg, Canada—about 217 miles of it passes through North Dakota. There, winter runs long and the climate forces a short construction season.
WIRTGEN Group Product Man ager Erik Sahr at RDO Equipment Co. explains that when Northern Improve ment came to the RDO team, they were specific in their requests to find a dependable concrete placer/spreader.
In fact, Greg McCormick, Northern Improvement’s President, and Executive Vice President Molly Barnes emphasizes that they looked at every placer on the market, its price, availability, and capa bilities. “The WIRTGEN GROUP’s equipment would allow us to pave stringless, place faster, and achieve a smoother ride,” says McCormick.
This road construction project was created by a larger flood protection plan,
While the RDO team members ensured the necessary placer/spreader and its parts would be on hand, the Northern Improvement team worked on securing their materials while dealing with supply chain shortages. Northern Improvement’s Vice President, Concrete Paving Division Manager Steve Schmidt explains that the team purchased steel products in 2021 to ensure they would be available but cement was in short supply. Paving days were scheduled care fully with constant communication with cement suppliers and aggregates delivery.
After both teams secured materi als and equipment, Sahr explains that they focused on training and had three WIRTGEN GROUP technicians sup porting the WPS102i placer and spread er from when they started in early July.
With time of the essence, any machine that Northern Improve ment used needed to be consistent, fast, and create a smooth pave. The 4 miles (approximately 21,000 ft.) of I-29 needed to be reconstructed. The WIRTGEN WPS 102i Placer/Spreader was able to travel over pre-placed dowel baskets and tie bar baskets but was also able to be programmed to place and spread a 12-40 ft. wide concrete road, up to 20-in. thick. According to Sahr, the project marks the first running use of the machine of its size in the world; the equipment's serial number: 01.
Jill Berger, a foreman for Northern Improvement was amazed by the power and speed, saying that they were able to dump six trucks in 6.5 minutes.
The crew benefited from safety and technology features like an auto matic safety shut-down system, machine monitoring, and GPS allowed increased productivity and efficiency for the proj ect. “Safety is especially important for both Northern Improvement and RDO Equipment Co. The WIRTGERN Group ensured the concrete placer and spreader would have an open platform system so alarm codes and auto shut downs could be programmed,” Sahr says.
The Northern Improvement team uses Holcim Type 1L cement (reduc ing carbon emissions) along with locally produced natural gravel as their aggregate and an ND DOT AE Well Graded mix is specified for paving all the states roads. Schmidt highlights that this mix is both low slump formed and hand-place into forms and underlines that their reconstructed roads for this project had full strength in under three days. The Northern Improvement team uses AMS curing compound as protec tive coating while following the DOT’s specifications for air-entrained concrete, fly ash, and well-graded aggregates.
All this work created a very smooth roadway according to the International Roughness Index, Schmidt explains.
Because of Northern Improve ment’s work with their WPS102i Series 1 machine, they plan to complete the project in the Fall of 2023.
Editor’s Note: Special thanks to North ern Improvement and the RDO Team for their contributions to this article.

Protect Your Crew, Even While Driving
Most contractors recognize the importance of hav ing foremen who not only can place good quality work, but also can and do look out for their workers. Safety, both on the site and driving to a from a site, is important and expected.
Recently, I worked with a very good foreman who was driving a material truck. He had a passenger, one of his workers, who did not have his seatbelt buckled. When the truck, with more than 300 gal. of material left in the tank, entered a ramp to exit a street, the truck was moving at 59 mph. The speed limit on the curve? 45 mph!
This truck happen to have a recently installed dashcam, which caught all eight to 10 seconds of the most horrific looking faces for the two in the truck. The passenger was thrown up against the roof of the cab twice. The foreman tried to control the truck, but the video shows a picture of panic and stress try ing to correct the steering. Without the concrete Jersey Barriers that were stra tegically placed on the ramp, there is a very strong chance that the truck could have rolled over the embankment.
Because of the high speed of the truck on the tight curve, a 5-gal. can of fuel fell over and leaked a good amount of gasoline onto the Billy Goat blower and a backpack. We’re not sure yet how it happened, but a spark connected with the gas and started a fire that completely burned up both blowers. As with the potential rollover, thankfully, the rest of what could have happened didn’t.
I bring this almost tragic accident to your attention because it could hap pen to any of us. The foreman in this story is like any foreman you might have working for you today. He’s a great worker, has a great attitude, loves his family, loves his job and his company.
The fact is he made a mistake—one that he now knows he was blessed to have lived through.
CONTROL THOSE FACTORS THAT YOU CAN
Contractor and field leader, your fore men or your drivers cannot control other drivers on the highway. But there are a few things they can control. Let me briefly outline a few.
• NEVER, EVER drive or ride without your seatbelt buckled. Always enforce the wearing of seatbelts for every passenger in the vehicle. If an employee does not want to wear a seatbelt, briefly state why they will have to do so. If they still don’t want to wear it, then strongly suggest that they call a friend or family member to pick them up. There is no room for any worker who knowingly disobeys federal, state, county and city laws, not to mention your company policy requirement.
• When driving large vehicles, or whenever you may be pulling a trailer, do not drive over the posted speed limit. Read the circumstances, road conditions and the weather and drive a speed that is perhaps slower—in some situations, much slower.
• Refuse to drive at the pace of the moving traffic. It doesn’t matter if you are getting passed by every vehicle, even if drivers are flipping the international hand gesture at you for “I love you.” Be above such idiocy, remain calm and drive safe.
• Double check that every piece of equipment, all hand tools and especially any fuel cans are tightly secured.
• Practice what is called “predictive driving:” look ahead, read the signs in front of you, or what is coming up
from behind your vehicle, and take the appropriate measures to drive safely and protect those in your care. As you approach off-ramps, slow down before you enter into the curve.
• As part of “predictive driving,” should you see one or more speeding vehicle coming up behind you cutting in and out of traffic at high speeds, don’t try to cut them off, no matter how mad their driving makes you. Stay out of situations that can easily be called “road rage.”
• Remember, you are responsible for your life and the lives of every worker reporting to you.
TAKE THE STEPS TO SAVE A LIFE
One purpose of this article is to scare the “bejesus” out of you. You don’t want to make that call to the wife, or parent, of a worker who is seriously injured or worse. If this real-life situation helps save one foreman or truck driver, then it’s been worth it. Nothing is more important than saving a life.
It's also to remind you that, as a lead er, safety begins with you. You must not only take care of yourself, you must be more focused to ensure that everything you and your crew do to complete work, including driving or riding to and from jobsites, is done with the highest level of safety possible.

it was an easy introduction into the world of snow and ice removal.
In my time working on SnowPRO ’magazine, I have learned the lingo, studied the equipment and gained a professional understanding of the snow industry. The Snow Conference furthered my snowy education and introduced me to new technology such as Kage’s WingLine Laser Plow Guide that reduces damage for both plow wings and roadside obstacles.
In addition to being introduced to the latest and greatest technology, I also got to see the latest snow and ice removal equipment including (but certainly not limited to) Boss Snowplow’s Snowrator and Western Products’ salt spreader attachment for truck alternatives.
My short day trip to the Snow Conference was well worth the drive. I was able to add some contacts to my snow and ice industry network and get the scoop on the newest and coolest in snow.

STATE OF THE SNOW INDUSTRY: STEADY ON
Snow professionals discuss the current state of the snow industry and their expectations for the future.
When asked to describe last year’s snow season, many snow professionals chose the same word: steady.
Sure, the snow industry has experienced several roadblocks in recent years—supply chain, COVID and labor issues to name a few—but many professionals are confident about the coming season.
“I think the snow industry is booming,” says Abel Cruz, owner of Lawnforce in Oak Creek, Wis. “When it snows, somebody must clean it, regardless of how the economy is. This is an industry that’s never going to die because in many regions, people are going to need services. As people keep living in those places and as snow keeps falling down, somebody has to clear it.”
Cruz and other snow industry experts discuss their latest snow season and dive into what they expect for this coming year.
The Past Year
While many industries were impacted negatively by the pandemic, the snow industry weathered the storm fairly well.
“People were investing in homes and doing work themselves in their outdoor spaces, so there were strong sales through COVID,” says Kris Kiser, president and CEO of the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI). “I also think (manufacturers) are in a better position relative to product inventory. There were issues the past year or so with parts, engines and other components, but that’s beginning to sort itself out, so on the inventory side, they’re OK.”
Kiser adds that overall, last year’s snow season was “pretty typical” as far as snowfall rates but that snow events tended to be stronger than in the past.
“It was a modest year, but what we are seeing are significant adverse weather events, either drought, flood and stronger hurricanes, storms, tornadoes and snow and ice events,” Kiser says.
Doug McIntosh, president of McIntosh Grounds
Maintenance in Milan, Mich., agrees that last year’s snow season was average, but he notes that it’s not the amount of snow that matters, but rather how it falls.
“No two snowfalls are the same. Sixty inches one year versus another year can be totally different based on whether we got a ton of smaller storms or just a few bigger ones,” McIntosh says.
The Challenges
While COVID, inflation and supply chain issues may continue to affect the snow industry, labor proves to be the reigning champion of obstacles for snow management companies.
“There has been a shift in individuals’ attitudes and work ethics, and we have had an increase in labor costs even though the skill set hasn’t changed,” says Elizabeth
The unpredictability of each snow season and how each storm will come keeps McIntosh Grounds Maintenance and its crews on their toes.
Bonadonna, president of Busy Beaver Lawn & Garden, in West Seneca, N.Y. “We started utilizing hiring software that helped connect us with prospective employees.”
McIntosh says that the unpredictable nature of the snow industry makes the labor issue more challenging.
“It’s not like summer where we can predict everything, what time we’re going to work from and till and so on. You can plan a 10- to 12-hour workday in the summer, but a 10- to 12-hour workday in the winter is huge,” McIntosh says. “Plus, every storm is different, so you might think you’re going to get 1 inch, and you get 3 inches, and the difference between 1 inch to 3 inches is monumental because that leads to the labor question of ‘do we need everybody? Do we just need half the guys? Are we just salting? Are we going to plow and salt?’ It’s about trying to navigate and control the logistics of the unknown.”
While Busy Beaver Lawn & Garden uses a hiring software to help contend with the labor problem, McIntosh says his answer is simple: Pay employees more and don’t lay anyone off.
“We pay more, and everybody’s paid on time, every time,” McIntosh says. “We’re also a little different in that we keep everybody like our full-time guys busy year round, whether it’s snowing or if they work in the shop. We don’t have guys on unemployment or something like that.”
Cruz has also increased wages to

attract labor.
“It has been a struggle. When I started the business in 2013, I used to pay $11 an hour, but now I have to pay over $20 an hour just to get somebody to work,” Cruz says. “I increase my prices about 3 percent every year, so when economies like this hit, it doesn’t affect the company as much.”
In addition to paying more, Lawnforce also fills the labor gap by recruiting young people right out of high school.
“I hire them in the summer and then they come back in the winter,” Cruz says. “Eventually, every time there’s snow, they call me to find out if there’s work. Even if they can only give me three hours, I take it. At least that’s one property done.”
Other than labor, Bonadonna says lack of equipment and inflation costs have impacted her business.
“It’s challenging to get materials with shortages and delays, and we have had to delay jobs and offer some different products and services. Costs have risen by a considerable amount,” Bonadonna says. “We have noticed some customers are passing on our offers due to compensating for the cost of materials and labor. However, there have been opportunities to get higher calibers of talent who are interested in growth opportunities. There has been a mindset shift from valuing dollars per hour to a higher value of growth opportunities.”
Bonadonna adds that it’s relationships and communication that help the company overcome those challenges.
“We find the right clients that are willing to share some of these inflation costs,” Bonadonna says. “We communicate with our clients about these rising costs. For equipment issues, we continued working with vendors that we know and trust.”
Looking Ahead
In addition to stronger weather events, Kiser says snow professionals should be on the lookout for changing regulations and new technology.
For example, in California, small off-road engines such as those found in leaf blowers, lawn mowers and other equipment will need to be zero emission starting in 2024.
“There are some exemptions on portable generators, but it changes their classification for
emissions compliance,” Kiser says. “The engine manufacturers will deal with that. They will have to make compliant engines, but other than that, I don’t see anything that would be problematic from a regulatory standpoint.”
As far as equipment goes, Kiser says he’s seeing more third-stage units that tout ergonomics and efficiency.
“They have headlights, handwarmers, cupholders, and with the different brushes and attachments, there are more options out there for snow professionals,” Kiser says. “We’ve seen some innovation coming into the mix. At Equip Expo this year, you’re likely to see new innovations in a number of product sectors with batteries, too.”
Finally, Kiser says he expects to see an increase in the intensity of snow events, which could, in turn, be good for the snow business.
“A significant snow will drive sales, and early snow will drive sales,” he says. “In fact, a lot of snow industry manufacturers, they’d love to see snow by Halloween in some parts of the country.”
Tricks of the Trade Expand your Space
“We’re growing into our new shop and offices, and that’s been huge for us as far as efficiencies. The guys aren’t on top of each other all winter long in the shop. We’re landscapers, and we plow snow, so we’re ‘outside guys.’ If you’ve got so many guys in the shop at one time, cabin fever starts to set in. We’ve got a basketball court and other games, and that was a huge success for our culture because the happier the crew is, the happier I am.” – Doug McIntosh
Don’t Overextend Yourself
“I never take more work than I can chew. Every year I get phone calls that start in November, and I have to tell them that I’m full. We don’t take so much so that we struggle. That’s partially what’s been helping me big time in retaining my employees.”
– Abel Cruz
G row your Brand Awareness
“We’re able to stand out consistently in a sea of sameness by prioritizing brand awareness. We have developed a strong brand awareness in our community, and when others were backing off on marketing and ads, we doubled down. We attracted top level talent and found individuals who are more efficient with their time in the field and office. Additionally, we leveraged technology and equipment mechanization to increase our communication from field to office and back to the client in a more
streamlined manner.” – Elizabeth Bonadonna Plan Ahead
“Plan for delays and plan to buy product or inventory product in advance. We’re seeing longer lead times across the board so future planning seems to be key. Don’t look for the machine only when you need it. Be mindful of the gasoline marketplace today. Don’t leave fuel in your machines. Run them dry and buy fresh fuel when you get that snow report.” – Kris Kiser

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT LIQUID ANTI-ICERS
Every winter, contractors and operators around the country are faced with securing the equipment and materials needed to clear snow, de-ice and keep their residents and communities safe from the hazards of unsafe roadways.
As regional needs and trends change over the years, new products are created to meet demand. Liquid anti-icers (distributed before a snow storm) can reduce labor time, offer an eco-friendly option and help create safer and more manageable driving conditions.
What is a Liquid Anti-Icer?
Liquid agents are called anti-icers instead of de-icers because the material is applied before the snow event. The liquid then reduces snow and ice buildup on the surface where it was sprayed.
Liquid systems are a popular choice because they can greatly reduce the amount of labor and materials needed to maintain road safety during or after a storm event. It also reduces black ice and sometimes even eliminates the need to send crews during or after a snow event, depending on the severity of the storm.
Pretreatment, the process of applying liquid anti-

icers, can be done before the snowstorm by either several hours and even days, depending on conditions. Anti-icing liquid can be made of several different materials.
There are regions across North America experimenting with different types of anti-icers including beetroot, corn and the Wisconsin specialty: cheese brine. Most commonly used, however, is a salt brine—liquid sodium chloride (NaCl).
Different liquid combinations (used with a variety of chloridebased salts) can be used in temperatures ranging from -20 degrees Fahrenheit and higher.
Regional conditions, existing truck equipment and preferences will help determine what solution is right for your community.
Advantages of Liquid Anti-Icers
Precise Applications
Liquid sprayer systems can be calibrated to fit the exact area you are maintaining, reducing the risk of over and under application of product.
Less Material Usage
Because the anti-icing agent is in a liquid solution, it requires less material to be effective over longer lengths of road, saving long-term material costs.
Save Labor Time
Liquid anti-icing is one of the most effective ways to reduce labor (and therefore reduce complications) of snow and ice removal during a storm by preventing bonds from forming before the storm.
Reduce Scatter
Rock salt can quickly bounce and scatter across the road, reducing efficiency. Liquid solutions are sprayed and stay in place.
Six-Way category blades are the ideal tool for contractors everywhere. Their versatile design provides operators with six different configurations to make the most of their time in the seat.
SB3600V blades are the ideal sidewalk blade for compact tractors and skidsteers, and is available in widths from 54” – 84”. The larger SB4600V series blade makes quick work of small roadways and driveways, and is available in widths from 96” - 108” with a max operating weight of 25,000lbs.
Contact your nearest distributor to find the right SixWay blade for your snow program.
Both sides of the SixWay blade can be moved independently to form an angleblade,scoop,orV-Blade to ensure you have the right bladeforeverycondition.

Not Displaced by Traffic
Similarly to reducing scatter, liquid anti-icers aren’t displaced by high traffic or slopes of the roadway.
Highly Effective
Liquid solutions can remain effective for hours/days depending on weather conditions.
Environmentally Conscious
The reduction of granular material is better for the environment. The amount of material used in spraying is less than using granular material, so it’s more cost effective than granular material
Disadvantages of Liquid Anti-Icers Learning Curve
There are logistical hurdles to really mastering the art of liquid anti-icers. There is a dynamic between temperature, timing and the solution created. While liquid options are growing in popularity, and solutions are becoming easier to manage, there will still be time and understanding needed to effectively anti-ice with liquids.
Cannot be Used in Isolation
Liquid anti-icers cannot replace plowing and even de-icing after the fact.
Must be Completed in Appropriate Weather
Anti-icing is the first in a series of actions to take when tackling a winter storm. Pay attention to the pavement temperature when you’re anti-icing. Certain liquids have more strict requirements than others.
The Right Equipment for the Job
Liquid anti-icers are applied using sprayers that come out of a tank that holds the solutions. There are a variety of different options of sprayers that can be used across several lanes. Different solutions will spray at different rates, so have your system calibrated correctly. GET EQUIPPED
Insight into how to properly equip snow and ice management vehicles.
Snow contractors have quite a few factors to keep in mind when purchasing new snow and ice equipment for their trucks. To find the perfect match, they need to consider the size and gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the truck, as well as the type of plow they’re looking to purchase. Here are a few key points of advice to help purchase plows and attachments this season.
Know the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating
Whether contractors are seasoned veterans or planning on venturing into the snow and ice removal business, they want to make sure to fit the vehicle with the right size equipment. Either extreme is dangerous: If they go too small, the plow may not hold up; too big, and they’ll risk damage to the truck, not to mention the legal ramifications if any accident takes place. Either outcome would be costly, and nobody wants to carry around that kind of regret. This is where the gross vehicle weight rating comes into play.
GVWR is important because different plow styles and types are grouped according to vehicle class rating. Once users figure out what these numbers are, they’ll be able to narrow down their options and make the best purchase for their setup. The GVWR represents the maximum weight that a vehicle’s suspension can support. This includes the weight of fuel, passengers
and the vehicle itself. This rating is typically labeled in the doorframe or under the hood of a truck—as well as in the owner’s manual. The GVWR is the most important factor in fitting snow and ice equipment. In fact, there’s a common saying that “the GVWR can literally make or break a truck.”
Mind the Equipment Capacity
It’s almost equally as important to pay attention to current or future equipment specs.
By ignoring the specs, it’s possible for a contractor to exceed his truck’s GVWR even before a grain of salt is placed in the hopper. To avoid causing irreparable damage, contractors should gather these numbers ahead of time, well before they take on any new pieces of equipment.
For example, when it comes to spreaders, it’s a good idea to factor in the number, size and location of the accounts contractors service. A few small accounts will require a drastically different capacity level than that of several large commercial properties. Also, depending on what options are available for deicing material, contractors will want to consider what method they plan to use for refilling when needed. This will help when deciding which size spreader will be the most cost effective in the long run.
Choose the Right Plow
The last step is to start looking at the different types of plows and what they can do.
Again, it’s important for contractors to be realistic in knowing the accounts they service and what their needs will be for the season. This will help determine how they will be using the plow and which style makes the most sense for the situation. The property types contractors maintain, the vehicles they use and the average snowfall in their area all play a major role in this decision. Here are some popular styles and some of the distinctions between each in what they can and can’t do.
Straight Blade Plows:
Simple in design and the most affordable option of the three styles, straight blade plows tend to be the most popular option each year.
Easy to operate: The straightforward design with easy up, down, left and right operation makes a straight
blade the perfect choice for anyone new to plowing. These types of plows are generally the go-to for plow drivers at every level because of the simple ability to get the job done.
Simple maintenance: Since there are fewer moving parts on a straight blade compared to a winged or v-plow, less can go wrong, meaning fewer repairs and simpler maintenance.
Job specific: Perfect for driveways, small properties and open lots with few obstacles.
Regionality: Best for use in areas receiving two to three snow events each season, ranging from 1 to 6 inches.
V-Plow
Often compared to a Swiss Army Knife, v-plows are the most universal, with three modes that give drivers the flexibility needed to easily clear dense properties at a reasonable cost—typically priced between a straight blade and winged plow. If contractors only have one plow, they may want to choose this option.
Versatility: The plow blade is hinged in the middle and uses hydraulic controls to adjust the blade from v-mode to straight mode to scoop mode. This allows the v-plow to push snow, haul snow and stack snow with ease.
Efficiency: A v-plow easily changes from one mode to the other from the comfort of the vehicle cab.
• V-mode: Easily break through deep, hardpacked snow
• Scoop mode: Increase snow stacking and hauling capacity
• Straight mode: Backdrag and windrow in large, open spaces
Job specific: Parking lots with various obstacles and tight areas or cities where space is limited, and snow professionals need the ability to stack snow high.
Regionality: Ideal for areas that receive more than five storms a year, with at least one event dropping more than a foot of snow.
Winged Plow
The most efficient movers of snow, winged plows carry up to 30 percent more snow than a straight blade—but because of their complexities, they can be the most difficult to use.
Versatility: Winged plows with full hydraulic control allow you to independently extend the wings. By wind rowing on a left or right angle, snow pros can reduce snow spilloff and extend for a wider pass, directing snow into the moldboard for a cleaner scrape.
Efficiency: With fully expanded wings, this style moves more snow than any other plow type. They are easily switchable from a standard blade size to an extra-wide blade size. By covering more space, snow contractors can reduce the number of passes to get the job done faster.
Job specific: Perfect for large areas that have obstacles and narrow areas, like packed parking lots, outdoor storage areas with aisles and jobs where contractors need to quickly carry a lot of snow.
Regionality: Does best in highly populated and con centrated areas like large commercial or industrial parking lots.

REMOVING SNOW WITHOUT DAMAGING TURF
Properly clearing clients’ driveways and walkways will also help ensure their lawns remain in good shape when the spring weather arrives.
While many people are still in the fall mindset, it is no secret that winter is right around the corner. Having a game plan on how to deal with a polar vortex or a snow storm will not only help when it comes to clearing clients’ driveway, but it will also help ensure their lawns remain in good shape when the spring weather arrives.
The removal of snow from a property can be a headache, but it is an essential practice to keep your driveway, walkways and sidewalks clear of what could be as high as multiple feet of snow. The challenge is keeping the snow clear without causing damage to clients’ lawns.
The Earlier the Better
When it comes to clearing pathways, the sooner you plow, the better. Allowing the snow to sit will make it more difficult to clear as the snow will begin to com pact, thus making it more difficult to clear a path on the pathway and driveway. Doing the job sooner will not only make life easier, but it is much safer for the prop erty and landscape as well. A tougher plow increases the force needed for it to clear, which increases the risk of damage being caused to the grass and landscape.
Invest in a Snow Blower
Snow blowers can be a great resource for not only driveways and sidewalks, but for yards overall. A snow blower can be used to clean up those walkways with out having a direct impact on yard lines or turf since it avoids touching the grass. It also makes the job a whole lot easier and quicker. Consider investing in one during the off-season to save some serious money.
Buy a Better Shovel
A high-quality shovel is a must for anyone clearing snow. A bad shovel can make life a lot more difficult, taking even longer to clear a driveway, potentially even leading to damage to the turf and soil. A flimsy scoop and weak overall build can lead to headaches for peo ple dealing with a polar vortex, when the snow itself is already making life miserable. A sturdy shovel will help get the job done but can also ensure the walkways are clear, preventing damage to bordering grass.
Stake Out Property Lines
A lot of northern parts of the country will experience feet of snow rather than inches, making it hard to know where clients’ yard barriers are. Keeping an eye on snow storms and winter weather and marking down property lines can help you keep track of what needs
to be plowed. Mark where the driveway ends and when the lawn begins, as well as where the property line ends and the areas where the client’s yard meets a roadway. This will help you avoid shoveling and snow blowing over clients’ grass and turf, helping avoid dam age to property. It can also help notify drivers and snow plows of where not to plow, helping that part of a yard to be preserved.
Avoid Using Salt
While using salt to clear icy pathways can be very help ful, doing it in areas close to your lawn can lead to some serious damage come springtime. The chemicals from the salt draws moisture from the grass, which, in turn, affects the soil and can lead to browning of the grass. That makes the use of salt dangerous to the health of your lawn and can lead to more headaches once the snow melts. Due to the danger of salt, alter natives of salt-sand mixtures have become much more popular to have a clean way of increasing traction in icy conditions.
