Plans to EXPAND Workforce Development

Becky Schultz / bschultz@acbusinessmedia.com

ACCORDING TO A SURVEY BY Autodesk and the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC), roughly 80% of construction firms experienced a hard time filling hourly craft positions, with severe shortages reported in all four regions of the country. While employment needs will ease as we move into the inclement weather months, they will

bloom again in Spring — and possibly worsen if the current industry outlook comes to fruition. As in previous boom cycles, contractors across the U.S. have turned to largely traditional methods to lure skilled workers: 62% increased base pay rates, 24% improved employee benefits and 25% provided incentives and bonuses for craft

workers. In addition, a quarter of respondents increased their use of labor-saving equipment and virtual construction methods (e.g., BIM) to overcome worker shortfalls. Yet, none of these steps address the underlying problem. As the National Center for Construction Education & Research (NCCER) points out, the perception of craft professionals has become one of low or middle skill workers, making such career paths unattractive to the modern workforce. To overcome this, Don Whyte, NCCER’s CEO, believes, “We must recapture the dignity of work as well as the pride and honor inherent in skilled occupations.” In the research report “Restoring the Dignity of Work: Transforming the U.S. Workforce Development System into a World Leader” (www.nccer.org/research), the NCCER identified both short-term and long-term policies to help move the industry toward this goal: 1 » Establish and strengthen career awareness and education opportunities by communicating all career paths to students in secondary education and their parents. 2 » Significantly improve participation in work-based learning programs by removing barriers to company participation. 3 » Measure performance and involvement in workforce development when awarding construction contracts — much like the industry does with safety. 4 » Provide greater incentive for the nation’s secondary education system to ensure the career readiness of all high school graduates. 5 » Increase the participation of underrepresented groups in Career and Technical Education (CTE) through greater outreach and mentoring. 6 » Promote industry involvement and investment into secondary and postsecondary CTE programs. 7 » Increase funding available to CTE programs most needed by industry. The AGC also published its “Workforce Development Plan” (https:// bit.ly/2CM9V9b) identifying steps federal officials should take to support construction workforce development. They include doubling the funding for CTE over five years and allowing more people with construction skills to legally enter the country. The plan also outlines new recruiting steps the association is taking, including launching a targeted digital advertising recruiting campaign and investing in innovative workforce solutions. For such plans to succeed, the construction industry must embrace and promote the call for change. You can start by adopting initiatives for your company and your community, or get on the national pulpit by reaching out to organizations such as the AGC and NCCER to lend a voice of support. ET

kid steers and compact track loaders (CTLs) feature high-performance hydraulic systems capable of running an ever-growing number of hydraulic-powered attachments. In addition, hydraulic systems drive the machines, lubricate against wear and corrosion and cool many of the components. Hydraulic system performance has gradually increased over the years through tighter tolerances. But this also makes them less tolerant of contamination. It is the No. 1 reason these systems fail.

“Key sources of contamination can be particle contamination such as dirt or metal or contamination such as water or air,” says Keith Kramlich, national service & warranty manager, Takeuchi US. Dirt and metal are the most common culprits. Trace amounts of metal particles in the hydraulic system are considered normal, especially on a new machine

during its break-in period. Dirt is another issue. “Dirt enters the system through attachment changes and poor maintenance practices,” says Kramlich.

PAY ATTENTION TO QUICK COUPLERS Quick couplers allow the attachment versatility that makes skid steers and CTLs so popular.

You may want to change hydraulic oil more frequently if you are using a loader for heavy-duty applications, and specifically if it is used with high-flow attachments where you are running the attachment frequently over relief and at hotter temperatures.

S KID-S TEER LOADERS

Always make sure the belly pans on your machines are clean. Excessive debris in the belly pans around the HST pumps prevents heat dissipation from the pump group. As such, they require careful attention. “Dust, dirt, mud, etc. can be transferred into the system during the coupling of the auxiliary lines,” notes Jeff Jacobsmeyer, Kubota construction equipment product manager. “Contamination can be prevented by carefully wiping the coupler surfaces before hookup. Operators need to be sure the hoses are up out of the dirt and away from any source of moisture.” Extra precautions can limit contaminants entering through quick couplers.

“When storing an attachment, clean the quick connects and seal them off from the environment using a plastic bag or cover,” advises Kramlich. When the attachments are not connected, make sure the caps are in place and replace any caps that do not fit tightly. Drain any pressure built up in the hydraulic

lines of the attachment after use. While relieving the pressure will not directly lower contaminant exposure, it will reduce the possibility that the operator will need to loosen the hydraulic fitting, which can lead to a greater risk of contamination.

KEEP OIL CLEAN Oil is the lifeblood of the loader, and it is shared with the attachments. Beware of the risk when connecting an unfamiliar hydraulic attachment to your equipment. You don’t know the condition of the oil stored in it. Also make sure you are

topping off the loader with the correct fluid. There is a risk of fluid incompatibility. Some OEMs caution against mixing brands and types of hydraulic fluid. “It is never recommended to mix oils as it will compromise the properties of each oil, which could lead to premature wear,” says Kramlich. There may be cases where a manufacturer uses different viscosities and oil types. “For example, Takeuchi uses engine oil in its CTL’s hydraulic system for better protection on certain components,” says Kramlich. “You want to ensure the attachments are not utilizing standard hydraulic oil as it will contaminate the machine’s system.” Bobcat recommends using an oil that is specifically blended

for its machines. “That hydraulic oil has an additive which helps water molecules adhere to each other and become a water droplet,” says Mike Fitzgerald, product specialist, Bobcat. “Then those water droplets are caught in the hydrostatic filter.” The oil has also been formulated to match the temperature, pressure and other operating requirements. “You can use an alternative oil, but you might not see as long of life on components as you would utilizing the Bobcat specific oil,” says Fitzgerald. Consider viscosity and oil temperature range when selecting a hydraulic fluid. Make sure when you replace the fluid that you are at least using the same type. Most industrial fluids use the ISO viscosity grade scale. The most common hydraulic oil viscosity grades in the ISO category are 32, 46 and 68. There are differing opinions when it comes to hydraulic fluid and attachment use. “Any contamination can affect the additive properties of the machine’s hydraulic oil,” Kramlich states. “Use only new attachments or attachments you have already used and know the hydraulic oil is clean and correct.” Other manufacturers claim the small amount of oil held in

14  EQU IPMENT T OD AY | October 2018 ET1018_12-17_SkidSteers_CB.indd 14

typical attachments does not present a very big risk of contamination. “The amount of oil that is held in the attachment is usually a very small percentage of what would be in the complete system in a machine,” says Fitzgerald. “Therefore, it does not have a huge effect. The oils that manufacturers are using today should be compatible.” “Oil volumes, for the most part, are small in the attachments compared to the overall size of the hydraulic reservoir in most machines,” Jacobsmeyer agrees. “A mixing of the oil is

yards — it would be a good practice to change the filter and oil more often than manufacturer recommendations as an extra precaution against unwanted contamination.”

OIL CHANGES ARE NOT OPTIONAL Hydraulic fluid begins to deteriorate from being heated and cooled during normal operation. Overheated oil forms varnish, causing valves and other components to stick. “Heat is another form of ‘contamination’ which can be caused by clogged oil coolers, air in the

Daily maintenance is critical to prevent excessive heat in the system. “It is vital to check the oil cooler to ensure that it is clean, as well as check the area around any hydraulic components to ensure they are not covered in debris,” Kramlich emphasizes. “For example, always make sure the belly pans on the CTLs and skid-steer loaders are clean. Excessive debris in the belly pans around the HST pumps prevents heat dissipation from the pump group.” Oil condition should also be monitored. This includes checking the color and cleanliness of the hydraulic oil. “If it looks dirty or burnt, it needs to be changed,” says Kramlich. “Check all hoses for cracks and signs of wear and replace if needed.”

“It is vital to check the oil cooler to ensure that it is clean, as well as check the area around any hydraulic components to ensure they are not covered in debris.” — Keith Kramlich, Takeuchi US expected and this factor has been addressed during the engineering and oil type selection for the loader. “Owners should adhere to the recommended service intervals for the hydraulic oil and filter changes to ensure long component life,” he continues. “If the loader is used with several different attachments — maybe from a number of different rental

system, poor quality oil, debris around the hydraulic components, etc.,” says Kramlich. “Heat decreases the viscosity of the hydraulic oil, which will increase wear and can lead to catastrophic damage. The viscosity of the oil has to be sufficient enough that the area between any moving parts is completely covered by an oil film. If not, there will be metal to metal contact.”

WATER AND LEAKS SHORTEN OIL LIFE

“Water and air contamination can damage the hydraulic system, as well,” says Kramlich. “When air enters the system through a cracked suction line, damaged fitting or low oil in the reservoir, it can cause excessive heat, erratic operation and increased wear on components. Water in the system can dilute the hydraulic oil and decrease lubricity and viscosity.”

Matching flows and pressures between the loader and the attachments is necessary not only to ensure optimal performance, but to protect the hydraulic system.

Water may be introduced to the system when operating in high humidity areas. “When hot oil cools down, moisture may enter the system through the hydraulic tank vent,” Fitzgerald explains. “The oil (along with specific additives) and filtering system need to be able to account for this.” Monitor for oil leaks and regularly check the hydraulic fluid level. An inadequate amount of oil can cause severe damage to pumps. Foamy or milky hydraulic oil appearance is an indication that you may have a leak that is causing air to enter the system. “Daily walk-arounds need to include checking for leaks, pinched lines and damaged lines/ fittings before and during operation of the attachment,” says Jacobsmeyer. When topping off the hydraulic fluid, clean the refill cap and surrounding area prior to removal.

SET ATTACHMENTS UP PROPERLY Matching flows and pressures between the loader and the attachments is necessary not only to ensure optimal performance, but to protect the hydraulic system. Over time, excessive flow levels can wear and damage the attachment seals, components and hoses. “Always ensure you know what flow and pressure your attachment requires. Then refer to your operator’s manual for instructions on flow and pressure

oil over relief and can cause excessive heat and damage to vital components. Excessive pressure can damage seals and hoses, as well.” “Providing 30 gpm of flow to an attachment with a max capacity of 25 gpm is a recipe for disaster,” Jacobsmeyer agrees. “Relying on just changing the engine speed would not be a good method for hydraulic flow control. “When sizing an attachment to the machine based on flow requirements, it is a good practice to provide a flow that falls in the middle of the attachment range,” he continues. “For example, if the flow range is between 15 to 20 gpm, it would be a

Too much flow or pressure being applied to an attachment can cause many issues, including attachment damage and machine damage. Make sure you know the proper flow and pressure for each attachment.

CHECK ATTACHMENTS AFTER SYSTEM FAILURES “It is imperative that if contamination has occurred that both [the carrier and attachment] be flushed, filters changed and new oil installed. A shorter interval for the hydraulic filter and oil replacement after the repair may be needed to monitor the condition of the machine in the event of a major failure,” says Jacobsmeyer. “This protocol needs to be followed to the letter if a major component failure occurred and metal shavings entered the system.” Cross contamination is an issue that can be easily overlooked. “When your oil becomes contaminated in the machine, then you would have that same oil in the attachment,” Fitzgerald points out. “If the oil has deteriorated or you have some reason other than the normal maintenance schedule to change it out, we recommend that you drain the oil out of the attachment and hoses. It is always a good practice to check your attachments and make sure that they do not have contaminated oil that may enter the machine at a later time.” Poorly performing attachments should serve as a warning sign. “Only use attachments that are known to be in proper working order,” advises Jacobsmeyer. “If an attachment seems to operate sub-par or sluggish, it needs to be removed and checked over immediately for any sign of failure. Operators need to

monitor the loader to make sure it stays within the proper operating temperature range. Bottom line, excessive heat can and will destroy a hydraulic system.”

adjustments,” Kramlich urges. “Most flow adjustments can be made via the machine’s control panel. However, pressure settings are most often adjusted on the control valve, which should be done by an authorized dealer.” Too much flow or pressure being applied to an attachment can cause many issues, including both attachment and machine damage. “For example, if a machine is pushing 30 gpm to an attachment that has a max flow requirement of 15 gpm, hydraulic pressure will increase across the system,” Kramlich notes. “This will push the excess

good idea to have a machine that can deliver 17 to 18 gpm.” Each loader has a unique set of performance specifications. “Every machine will have a specific flow that it is capable of supplying through the quick couplers,” says Fitzgerald. “Make sure the attachment that you are connecting to the loader is capable of accepting the flow and pressure for that specific machine.” The operator plays an important role in this process. “You can have a new machine with perfectly clean coolers, but if you operate it inappropriately or

overload the hydraulics by running the oil over relief, then it is going to start overheating,” says Fitzgerald. “As an example, operating a grapple should not cause a machine to overheat. However, I once dealt with that specific situation. The operator didn’t understand that if he continued to hold the auxiliary button after the grapple was completely opened or closed, the oil continues to flow over the relief valve. This caused the machine to overheat frequently. Proper operation would have eliminated that issue.”

OIL ANALYSIS CATCHES CONTAMINATION EARLY One way to ensure the hydraulic oil is working properly is through oil analysis. To be meaningful, the results need to be a trend so you can see what is happening over time. “For those that utilize oil analysis, it is a good investment,” says Fitzgerald. “If you conduct an oil sample when the machine is newer and lower hours, you know what the baseline is as you go forward.” Catching problems early saves repair costs. “Having the hydraulic oil tested regularly can aid in determining premature wear and can help prevent catastrophic failures,” says Kramlich. “An oil sample will show increased metal particle count, which can help identify a possible failing component. It will also show dirt levels and viscosity, which can be a key tool in determining if the maintenance practices that are being followed are sufficient for the way the machine is being utilized. “Catching a possible catastrophic failure before it happens can save the owner a lot of money and downtime,” he adds. If you find the carrier’s oil is contaminated, you should also check all of the attachments that are used with that machine. “Not checking this could result in contaminated oil [entering] back into the machine’s system,” says Kramlich. There are some basic steps that allow loaders and attachments to run reliably. “Run the machine properly, keep the oil clean and if you are running in heavy-duty or severe applications, change the oil and filter more frequently to maximize the life of your machine and provide the best durability and uptime,” Fitzgerald advises. TRU CKS & TRANS PORTATION

In typical stone applications, a Stone Slinger system can accurately place material up to 100 ft. from the truck. The throwing distance will be less for light-density “fluffy” materials. A shorter conveyor is also available for close-in applications such as roadway and sidewalk reconstruction in older, heart of city work.

C

lass 8 trucks often transport materials over the road to the jobsite where they are stockpiled or dumped in front of dozers or motor graders that ultimately spread the materials. On construction sites and road building projects, dump truck drivers may also attempt to spread the material while unloading the bed.

Standard dump trucks can be used to place materials using a “tailgate spread.” This is when a driver dumps material out of the back of the truck while moving forward, using the chained tailgate to slow the flow of material while slowly raising the bed. But this is not a precise way to distribute material. Many factors affect the quality of a tailgate spread, including the width of the area where the material is to be placed, steep areas or inclines and material stickiness. It becomes a real test of skill, since construction crews are relying on the drivers’

accuracy throughout material placement. It takes a lot of practice to learn how different materials react to this spreading process. Sand will obviously move out much faster than gravel. The driver will also need to ensure the dump tray is being raised at the right speed. Too slow and the material won’t flow as required, and too fast will see too much of the material being laid. Even the type of dump body can influence the results. For example, elliptical body designs lend themselves to uses where material typically hangs up. The elliptical contoured floor will assist with an easier flow. In some cases, you can save significant time and effort by placing transported materials directly where they are needed

with specialized solutions. You can save on the cost of support equipment as well as any labor needed to spread the material.

UNIQUE SOLUTIONS ALLOW ACCURATE PLACEMENT There are various options that allow more precise placement of materials directly from the transport vehicle. One of the more innovative methods is with a high-speed conveyor truck. Unlike traditional methods, a high-speed conveyor truck unloads and places material in one motion, with one driver/operator. Other methods require a truck driver to deliver and unload the bulk material, plus additional equipment and crew to move the material into place where it is actually needed. The benefits of completing

DUMP TRAILERS

MAXIMIZE PAYLOADS Dump trailers are typically less maneuverable on the jobsite than straight trucks, but they often have the capability to handle larger payloads. A standard tandem dump truck typically has a capacity of 13 tons. You can increase this by adding axles to the truck. A tri-axle dump truck generally has a 15-ton capacity and a quad-axle dump truck can handle around 17 tons of payload. Dump trailers, on the other hand, can carry up to 26 tons, depending on the length. Materials can often be rapidly unloaded, as well. Bottom dump models, for instance, can unload a 21-yd. load in about 25 ft. When it comes to spreading materials on the jobsite, trailers offer varying degrees of capability. For precisely placing materials, you can choose from bottom dump, live bottom or side dump trailers. While end dump trailers are common for transporting quantities of material, you need the truck to remain stationary when unloading due to the potential tipping hazard. Bottom dumps allow material to be precisely laid on a windrow right and left, or spread evenly across the rear of the trailer when it opens front to rear. They are widely used for stockpiling, material transport and asphalt paving. Bottom dumps are a popular choice for laying a windrow of asphalt in front of a paver laydown machine. There is no need to stop the laydown machine; it is basically a continuous flow of asphalt. The continuous windrow can help produce a higher quality mat with fewer seams. Bottom dump trailers are quite versatile, but like any equipment, they have their limitations. There are restrictions on material size that can come down through the gate and flow out cleanly underneath the axles. If you need to haul material that averages 1 to 2 ft. in diameter, a bottom dump is not well-suited for the application. Live bottom trailers offer benefits similar to bottom dumps. A live bottom trailer is a semi-trailer used for hauling loose material such as sand and gravel. It is an alternative to a dump truck or an end dump trailer since it allows operation under overhead obstructions. Live bottom trailers can be used in several asphalt applications, including on roads and interstates. They can also be used on parking lots to transport materials. However, the parking lots must be at least a couple of acres in size in order to make using the live bottoms efficient. Another trailer type that can accurately place aggregates on a jobsite is the side dump trailer. These trailers are particularly well suited for site prep work. Their design allows the operator many options when dumping. He or she can stop and dump the load, windrow it or dump it over a K-rail or bridge. Drivers can place product — whether it’s dirt, gravel or rock — exactly where it needs to be. It can all be done on the run; you don’t have to stop, scrape out the tub, then move the material where it’s supposed to be.

the operation in one motion include: ˜˜ Lower costs for equipment — no additional machines required to transfer and place material ˜˜ Lower costs for work crew — no added crew required to receive or handle material ˜˜ Time savings — off load and place a full truckload of stone or soil in a short period of time with minimal cleanup ˜˜ Material savings — no losses due to stockpile; place only as much material as needed, where needed

˜˜ Flexibility — one system places stone, topsoil, sand, gravel and mulch; 100-ft. range to work around obstacles and limited access points; deliveries scheduled independent of other tasks for jobsite crew ˜˜ Safety — less moving traffic and less congestion on jobsites; remote control allows less climbing and reduced dust and noise for operators. “These factors combined result in lower total cost per load, and lower costs to complete the project in less time,” says Scott Nelson, W.K. Dahms Mfg. Ltd. W. Keith (W.K.) Dahms developed a solution to transport and precisely place aggregate materials using a high-speed outboard rear conveyor mounted directly on a truck body. He named it the Stone Slinger. “It was originally developed to deliver and place clear & frac

Three new 37-ft. live bottom trailers from Trail King increased Shepley Motor Express’ hauling capacity 40%. Contractors can experience smoother maneuverability with live bottom trailers vs. dump trucks because the unit won’t have to adjust to overhead obstructions. 3/4-in. stone for foundations and weeping tile applications,” says Nelson. “Customers quickly adopted it for use with sand and gravel. Since then, the design has been modified to handle a broader range of material including topsoils, mulches and wood chips.” The trucks are designed to precisely place materials via a movable conveyor. “The Stone Slinger is a hopper-style truck body with a live floor feed and a high-speed boom conveyor, which is configured to focus materials into a narrow stream as they are projected from the end of the conveyor,” Nelson describes. “The rig is controlled from an elevated station on the truck or with a wearable remote control package. Hydraulic valves allow remote control of the volume of material fed into the stream and the speed of the

Ltd. boom conveyor, as well as the conveyor’s angle of direction and elevation.” These trucks can handle a range of materials. “The type of material will affect the Stone Slinger’s maximum effective range for placing material, but in general, it can handle the same material types that are suitable for delivery in a dump truck,” says Nelson. “In typical stone applications, a Stone Slinger system can accurately place material up to 100 ft. from the truck. less for light-density ‘fluffy’ materials. A shorter conveyor is also available for close-in applications such as roadway and sidewalk reconstruction in older, heart of city work.” The operator directs the flow of material to where it’s needed. “To aim the material stream, the conveyor can swing laterally through a 270° arc, and can be raised or lowered through 46° of elevation, 23° above and below horizontal.” The speed of placing the materials depends on how much precision is required. “In most high-speed applications where the conveyor is projecting the material over some distance, the Stone Slinger can unload upwards of approximately 3 tons per minute,” says Nelson. “The high-speed conveyor will unload and place a full truckload in

about half an hour when very precise placement is required. If the application simply requires the load to be dropped in one place, the live bottom and conveyor will unload the complete truck in about four minutes.”

REMOTE CONTROL SIMPLIFIES PLACEMENT A remote control for the Stone Slinger not only controls the speed and direction of the conveyor, but allows the operator to remotely maneuver the truck around the jobsite. A single set of controls can run the conveyor and reposition the truck with Creep Drive for ideal placement of the material. The Stone Slinger Creep Drive adds a complete

hydrostatic drive system to the standard powertrain of the truck. A hydraulic-driven gearbox is inserted into the driveline. A CAN Bus panel controls all hydraulic and operating functions and communicates with the remote. Ground speed of the truck under hydraulic power is limited to a fast walking speed. If the truck is on an incline, the hydraulics will brake its speed automatically. If the wheel speed exceeds 2.5 mph (4 km/h), the CAN Bus will shut down and stop the truck. John Da Silva of Rock Concrete Forming Ltd., Mississauga, Ontario, has experience with the Creep Drive remote control on the Stone Slinger. He says the investment has paid off well. “It’s the time savings that pays you back,” he states. “On a typical weeping tile job, the driver has to go back and forth to move the truck four or five times. Each time when you get into the truck, you have to turn the PTO off, drive the truck, put the air brakes on again and restart the PTO,” Da Silva notes. By using the remote control to move the truck,

the operator remains outside the cab to keep the material flowing until the load is completely delivered. Da Silva believes outside of the truck is the right place for operators to be. “You get out here and you can see everything,” he comments. “We are always working in very tight spaces. You can watch the wheels and the ground more closely than if you were steering from the cab. You won’t ever put the truck in a pothole or a ditch, so you never have to wait for another truck to come pull you out.” The Creep Drive translates into better job quality with less wasted material, Da Silva adds. By making it easy to move the truck into the best location, Creep Drive helps operators distribute material more precisely and consistently. That translates into lower costs for Trailers clean-up and material.

An ejector body features an ejector ram installed in the bed of the truck that pushes material out of the rear of the dump body. EJECTOR BODIES ALLOW PRECISE CONTROL Another alternative to a standard dump body is the ejector body. These bodies feature an ejector ram installed in the bed of the truck that pushes material out of the rear without having to raise the dump body. Because a low center of gravity is maintained, the risk of rollovers that can occur when a body is raised is eliminated. J&J Truck Bodies & Trailers, Somerset, PA, offers a Horizontal Ejector (HE) that allows precise control when unloading aggregates and asphalt. It features the DynaControl hydraulic system with AutoFeed, a hydraulic double-acting high-lift tailgate and the AWARE camera system. AutoFeed automatically moves the load forward when the spreader is low on material. The AWARE camera system allows operators to see the position and operation of the ejector inside the body and ensures visibility behind the truck when operating in reverse. “The horizontal ejector technology is a lower cost, easier to maintain solution than other conveyor/auger bodies currently on the market,” asserts Mike Riggs, senior vice president, J&J Truck Bodies & Trailers. Whether high-speed conveyor trucks and ejector bodies are wellsuited for your jobsite depends on a number of factors, including the desired cycle time and payload capability. You must carefully compare the payload weight capacity vs. the potential time, labor and equipment savings to determine the best solution for your operation. ET

nboard air compressors come in several types, each with its own benefits and potential drawbacks, depending on your situation. Selection starts with determining your air needs, including the requirements of the tools the compressor will run. “When considering what the air compressor will be used for, contractors need to know their volume and pressure requirements,” says Adam Oppermann, assistant product manager, Stellar Industries. “Whether filling up tires or running pneumatic tools, knowing your cubic feet per minute (cfm) and pounds per square inch (psi) requirements is key.” Jim Raymond, VMAC sales manager, agrees, noting, “Contractors and operators should find out the air demand of the tools they’re using (cfm, psi), and how they are running the tools (duty cycle). Whether you need continuous air

flow or just air in short bursts is an important consideration. If you need air continuously, an air compressor that operates at 100% duty cycle is required to avoid having to stop work and wait for air to build.” It’s important to understand what you need to accomplish with the air compressor throughout a typical work day. “Do you want to run a set of pneumatic tools to pull lug nuts off equipment... or hydraulic breakers or jackhammers?” asks Jeremy Bailey, Doosan Portable Power air products manager. “Those tools will be pretty specific on what pressures they need to run best.” Determine how many tools you typically need to run at one time to calculate the total output required. “Each tool will have a cfm required to run,” Bailey notes. “So it turns into a math equation.”

RECIPROCATING OR ROTARY SCREW? There are two common types of air compressors for service and other work truck applications: reciprocating (piston) and rotary screw. “Piston compressors compress the air with piston pumps and can have one or multiple stages,”

Oppermann explains. “These take time to build up air in an air tank, and have shorter duty cycles, but can hold up and work with most applications. “A typical oil-injected rotary screw compressor works by pulling air between two rotating screws, which compresses the air,” he continues. “These compressors remove the oil from the air and provide a near instant steady stream of air once turned on.” Each offers pros and cons depending on how you plan to use them. “Reciprocating air compressors that utilize an appropriately sized air tank, such as our RC40 hydraulic-driven system, are ideal for service and mechanic trucks that don't require continuous, on-demand air,” says Dean Strathman, vice president of sales, Vanair. “They are typically cost effective and have low maintenance.” These units are especially suited to frequent on/off use. “If you are going to be turning your compressor on and off throughout the day, a piston compressor is a good option,” says Oppermann. “Piston compressors also require less maintenance than rotary screw compressors, but take a while to build up air in the air tank and tend to weigh more.” While they are typically low maintenance, the up and down motion of the piston can cause components to wear relatively quickly, says Bailey. Rotary screw compressors are subject to less wear, meaning they tend to last much longer.

“[With a rotary screw], you have longevity,” Bailey states. “The truck will probably wear out faster than the compressor that’s on it.” Rotary screw systems supply air on demand, and thrive in heavy-duty use cycles. “They provide increased air output compared to reciprocating units that are typically around 40 cfm,” says Strathman. “Vanair’s rotary screw units can produce up to 1,000 cfm, have been designed to run continually and have a long life cycle if maintained correctly.” He adds that he has seen 25+-year-old systems still at work in the field. “If you are good at keeping up with maintenance and need an air compressor to turn on, run longer periods and have quick access to air, then a rotary screw could be a good fit,” says Oppermann.

COMPRESSOR CONFIGURATIONS Onboard air compressors come in multiple configurations, including hydraulic-, under-deck PTO- and underhood belt-driven options and self-contained gasoline- or diesel-powered models. Hydraulic-driven compressors are easily transferrable between vehicles and require no additional fuel source. “If your service truck has a hydraulic crane, a hydraulic-driven air compressor is a great option, as you can tap into the same power source,” Raymond points out. “If the user already has a need for hydraulics on the truck... an above-deck hydraulic-driven air compressor is a cost-effective machine,” Strathman concurs. “[It] doesn’t have the engine to maintain, as well as eliminates the weight associated with an engine-driven system.” However, there is the potential for hydraulic leaks, and the hydraulic reservoir tanks take

up space and add weight on the vehicle. “The truck has to run to power the hydraulic-driven air compressor, which increases fuel consumption and idling hours,” Strathman adds. Gasoline-driven air compressors tend to be the least expensive configuration. They are easily transferrable between trucks and operate independently of the vehicle. Due to their popularity, they also offer ready parts and service availability. However, these models may require a separate fuel source if the truck is diesel powered. They can also vary in both weight and footprint depending on the compressor type. “Gas-driven reciprocating air compressors can be quite heavy, need a large air receiver tank and are not reliable in cold weather,” Raymond comments. “Gas-driven rotary screw air compressors, such as VMAC's G30, are much lighter weight, more compact and don’t require an air receiver tank as they can deliver continuous output.” The lower cost of gas-powered models can be tempting, but you tend to get what you pay for. “You see a lot of people take a small off-the-shelf gasoline-powered air compressor and just bolt it to the deck of a service truck,” says Bailey. “Those aren’t necessarily made to [handle] the stresses of riding up and down the highway all the time. Some of those don’t hold up very well.” Diesel-powered air compressors, on the other hand, are designed specifically for heavyduty applications. “They’ll have a module with an engine and a rotary screw airend that are really designed to take the stresses of traveling down the highway,” says Bailey. “They can take years of abuse instead of [a gas-powered model] that measures in months.”

GET THE ANSWERS In order to determine the correct onboard air system for your application, Dean Strathman, Vanair, advises answering the following questions: » What are the requirements of the tools and equipment you need to run? » What are the space constraints and weight considerations on the vehicle? » What is the duty cycle in which the tools will run? » What is the level of commitment to maintaining the compressor? » What are the operating costs of the particular onboard air solution? » Is the compressor built to handle the operating conditions it will encounter — including ambient temperatures and environmental factors such as dust? » Does the application require simultaneous multi-functioning capability?

“Diesel engine-driven air compressors are very good in cold weather and can be tied into the truck’s fuel if the vehicle takes diesel,” says Raymond. They are easily transferrable between vehicles, and can run without the truck engine being turned on, saving fuel. “However, diesel engine air compressors can be expensive to purchase and expensive to fix. They’re also very heavy, taking up precious payload on your truck.”

“THE BELOW-CHASSIS MOUNT COMPRESSOR IS FUELED FROM THE ONBOARD FUEL TANK OF THE TRUCK, SO IT’S OUT OF SIGHT AND OUT OF MIND. YOU JUST HIT THE BUTTON AND YOU HAVE AIR. YOU DON’T HAVE TO SERVICE OR FUEL A SEPARATE ENGINE. THAT’S REALLY THE BENEFIT. — Jeremy Bailey, Doosan Portable Power Under-deck PTO-driven compressors are mounted to the chassis frame. “By utilizing the chassis frame... PTO air compressor systems provide some inherent advantages, including saving bed space on the truck, reducing weight on the vehicle, eliminating the need to purchase an additional Tier 4 Final engine system by using the vehicle’s [engine],” says Strathman. “Being integrated on the truck’s frame also reduces theft and insurance costs.”

PTO-driven models are known for their longevity, as well as their reliability in winter. In addition, they tend to run at a lower rpm than, say, an underhood compressor and thereby reduce the amount of fuel consumed during operation, says Strathman. With available space under the chassis, they can also be configured with other functions, like a generator. Because they are vehicle specific, these compressors are not transferrable to just any truck. “Under-deck PTO air compressors are more expensive and heavier than other options, as well,” says Raymond. “They’re run by the truck, which means it increases fuel consumption and truck idling hours.” Underhood compressors are also integrated with the vehicle, but are installed under the hood. “Underhood air compressors are the lightest weight option, and they don’t take up any space on the truck,” says Raymond. “Due to their placement, the air compressor is protected from the elements and cold weather, and there’s no chance of theft.” Underhood air compressors provide air on demand and do not require an air receiver tank. But as with under-deck systems, they can require a greater upfront investment, are harder to transfer to another truck and can increase vehicle fuel consumption and idling hours.

TENSION IS KEY

These tips can help you keep track sag, and costs, under control.

To Cutting Undercarriage Costs T he most controllable factor in undercarriage wear is track chain adjustment. Correct track sag for many conventional crawlers is 2 in., but check with your equipment manufacturer for specific recommendations. The prescription sounds simple, but it can be difficult to maintain, as track tension changes with many variations in ground conditions. “We run into a lot of undercarriages that either the operator or the customer’s lube guys just don’t take care of well enough. They don’t keep the tracks cleaned out and track sag adjusted,” says Jessy Wolf, product support sales manager with Florida Deere dealer Beard Equipment. “You have to clean out your tracks on a daily basis, if not a couple times a day.” Cleaning tracks is simple but certainly not fun. Dig out between the track and the roller frame with a shovel, preferably when the packed material is still wet. “We run into a lot of clay and sand in Florida,” says Wolf. “And when you mix the two together it becomes like concrete up in the roller frames. It’s very abrasive.”

42  EQU IPM ENT T ODAY | October 2018 ET1018_42-43_FleetManagement_BC.indd 42

During operation, materials that stick to and pack between mating components such as rollers, links, sprocket teeth and bushings increase track tension. So tension needs to be adjusted any time packing in the track chain changes. “If you get a lot of packing, it only tightens the track up as you go along, so getting them cleaned out and adjusted is the key to undercarriage life,” says Wolf. “You could run it [tight tracks] for two or three days and almost cut track chain life in half with the material we get in Florida.”

A LITTLE GOES A LONG WAY A little bit of change in track sag makes a big difference. Tightening up chain to reduce sag by half an inch on a crawler tractor in the 80-hp range results in approximately 5,600 lbs. of chain tension when measured at the track adjuster. The suggested 2-in. track chain sag on the same machine results in approximately 800 lbs. of chain tension.

The greater load on tight track results in more wear on contact areas between the track bushings and sprocket teeth and the track-link-to-idler roller contact areas. Increased wear also occurs at the track-link-to-idler contact point and track-link-toroller contact points. Tight track also requires more horsepower and fuel to do the same job. Sprockets packed with mud can force the track bushing to seat high on the sprocket tooth. Following bushings will strike the back side of the teeth, rounding off the tops and reverse side of both the sprocket teeth and the bushings. When tracks consistently operate packed with mud, it’s best to loosen them to reach the manufacturer’s recommended track tension to prevent reverse tip wear on the bushings and sprocket teeth. Track that’s too loose will cause bounce and vibration which can affect your

dozer’s performance, especially when grading. To measure track chain tension: ˜˜ Roll the machine forward slowly and allow it to roll to a stop. ˜˜ Center a track pin over the carrier roller. ˜˜ Lay a straightedge or stretch a string over the track grousers. ˜˜ Measure sag between the straight edge and grouser tip where the track sags the lowest. Every machine’s operator manual will tell you how much track sag is appropriate. Most will review the process for measuring and adjusting tension.

GET MORE TRACK LIFE THROUGH PROPER LUBRICATION The track adjuster is a grease-filled hydraulic cylinder

Materials that stick to and pack between mating components increase track tension. Tension should be adjusted any time packing in the track chain changes.

FL EET MANAGEMENT

used to maintain track tension. To change track tension, add grease or remove grease from the track adjuster. Track adjustments are typically actuated using a grease gun. Read the procedures carefully to avoid the dangers of pressurized fluid. For example, if track is too tight, the grease that’s holding the idler out will be under a tremendous amount of pressure and should be handled very carefully. This is why most owners prefer track tension be adjusted by trained maintenance people. Yet, there are still misunderstandings about this particular grease zerk. “We do have a little trouble with some lube guys who mistake it for a daily grease point and just pump it up until it stops, then move on to another machine,” says Wolf. Many contractors rely on maintenance people to take care of tracks, but that’s why it’s rare that dozer owners get full value for their undercarriage investment. Most dozer owners don’t have dedicated maintenance people. At companies that do, maintenance crews don’t see most crawlers often enough to react to daily changes in track condition. “Companies that do it well rely on their lube people to get track tension adjusted,” says Wolf. “And they’re leaning on their operators to let the lube guy or the equipment manager know that ‘Hey my tracks are too tight. You need to get somebody out here to check them out.’”

TRAVEL AFFECTS TRACK WEAR Track pins rotate approximately 180° against the inside diameter of the bushings as the track chain pivots into and out of the sprocket and idlers. On sealed track chain, wear will occur on about 180° of the track pin outside diameter and bushing inside diameter. On sealed and lubricated track chain, this wear is virtually eliminated. “The amount of time that you’re in reverse on a dozer accelerates the wear, as well. It is just as bad as having them too tight,” says Wolf. “Maintenance has greater impact on undercarriage life over a broader cross-section of machines than operating technique because of track tension adjustment. But on dozers, the sprocket rubs in more places on the bushing when it’s in reverse, compared to carrying it forward — three pinch points in reverse and two in forward.” Operating the crawler in reverse also triples the number of pins and bushings that are under steel-on-steel contact, load and motion, because drive tension reaches from the sprocket, over the carrier roller, around the front idler to the ground. In contrast, the only links in the chain under drive tension when operating forward are the few between the bottom of the sprocket and the first grousers with a bite into the ground. Track wear is directly proportional to speed and distance. Plan your jobsite work carefully to make travel as productive as possible.

MINIMIZE ADDED TRACK COST Eliminating pitch extension, or chain stretch, slows sprocket tooth wear and bushing outside diameter wear. Sealed and lubricated chain life is approximately 50% longer than that of sealed, dry track chain. Sealed and lubricated track chain not only reduces wear on bushing outside diameter and sprocket teeth, but it also reduces noise and increases machine fuel efficiency. Reduced wear in sealed and lubricated pin joints can challenge conventional thinking about when to turn pins and bushings on a crawler tractor. For example, if you’re measuring wet chain and the link rail is 40% gone and the drive side of the bushing is at 80%, you could end up with a lot of dry joints if you try to reach 50% rail wear and 100% on the bushings.

Provided by John Deere

And the risk of failures is probably not worth it, considering the additional savings available if you change a little early but can reuse virtually all of the pin/ bushing seals. Another buying tip that affects track cost significantly is selecting the narrowest track shoes that provide the flotation you need. Proper flotation helps reduce wear by keeping track from being submerged in material. But wide track shoes used on a hard surface can overload track pin and bushing joints, and can affect pin and bushing retention in the track links. Because the middle of the track shoe is fastened to the track links, the links act as a pivot point to absorb twisting forces that occur as the machine moves over uneven or rocky terrain. Shoe width can affect seal integrity in lubricated track chain, reducing chain life by as much as 50% in rocky or rough conditions. Wider than necessary shoes also increase stress and load on idlers, rollers and sprockets. The wider the track shoe and the harder the underfoot surface, the faster track shoes, pins, bushings, rollers and idlers will wear. Use rock guards only when working in rocks too big to lodge easily between the sprocket teeth

www.ForConstructionPros.com

ET1018_42-43_FleetManagement_BC.indd 43

To determine track tension, measure to the grouser tip from a straight edge or string stretched from the carrier roller to the idler or sprocket, whichever sags most. Check the manuals for the machine model at hand for the full procedure and specific sag prescription. During reverse operation, about 75% of pins and bushings are under contact, load and motion from the bottom of the front idler to the first pin and bushing joint engaged by the sprocket tooth. Forward operation puts about 25% of the pin and bushing joints under contact, load and motion. and track bushings or between the track links and idler tread. Rock guards also help guide the idlers and rollers when working on steep hillsides. But avoid rock guards when working in normal conditions. Working on soil or surfaces that pack, full-length rock guards will trap the material between the track rollers and links, reducing the components’ useful life. Equipment manufacturers agree that about 20% of your crawler’s purchase price is for the undercarriage, and track will eat up nearly half of your maintenance costs. Many factors can reduce that percentage, but maintaining track chain tension in changing conditions and buying the right parts will most likely have the greatest impact. ET

rofits in construction can be lean, even with the best of technology available to help. That’s partly why project management software is increasingly popular with contractors. Estimating software is a sales tool that helps companies create fast, accurate estimates and generate professional reports. More contractors are using it and more project owners are expecting that they will.

OUTDATED METHODS Human error in construction might never be more fatal for a company than when it

involves estimates. “We have clients who have called us after they lost $100,000 on a project because someone edited an Excel document [who] wasn’t authorized,” says Jeff Gerardi, president of ProEst. Still, many contractors stick with old methods even when new ways are superior. Some don’t realize how out of date they are until there’s a problem. “One missed quantity, one miscalculated measurement, one mispriced line item... all of these

Sage competitors include WinEst, ProEst, MC2, USCost, CostX, CostOS, RIB and Beck Tech, to name a few. There are dozens of construction estimat-

“We have clients who have called us after they lost $100,000 on a project because someone edited an Excel document [who] wasn’t authorized.” — Jeff Gerardi, president, ProEst can create a bid that removes the profit in a job, or even makes it a loser,” says Walter Davis, estimating market manager, Sage Construction & Real Estate Division.

LEFT: Identifying the amounts of materials needed for a project is an important part of an estimate. But how you break down the costs can give you a better sense of how potentially lucrative the project could be well before you win a bid. RIGHT: Takeoffs are essential to a professional bid. Determining necessary quantities is a painstaking process repeated with each design change, but it can be done with ease using model-based estimating software.

ing software tools, and perhaps hundreds of software types that do some estimating tasks. Microsoft Excel remains the king, though the popular spreadsheet has risks — anyone using it

commit to specialized software, Excel will work for some estimating-related tasks, as will some project management software. But as a firm grows, its estimating system becomes crucial,

because a predefined process can help drive sales. “Estimating software is important because contractors need that standardization to know their actual costs,” says Carol Hagen, a technology consultant who trains companies in project management software. “Bluebeam does takeoff but doesn’t have a database.” Unlike some project management tools, software specifically made for estimating will integrate with various construction accounting software tools. Tools that don’t integrate with the firm’s accounting software may require data to be input twice. Estimating software costs vary, from a few hundred dollars to thousands of dollars. “Ours is an annual subscription with a $5K minimum entry,” Gerardi says. “Pricing for estimating software is all over the map, from a few hundred dollars to as much as $10,000 to $15,000 per user for desktop software. This can translate to as little as $50 to $500 per user per month in a subscription environment,” Davis notes. A company thinking about adding estimating software should assess things such as flexibility when adding data and reporting. Also consider features such as takeoff, cost estimating, custom reporting and integration with other accounting and project management products.

FIRM DIGS IN WITH ACCURATE QUANTITY ESTIMATING SOFTWARE In the early 2000s, Jim Hammond decided to shift his highway and heavy civil construction career and launch Hammond Estimating & Consulting, based in Canandaigua, NY. “When I was putting my business plan together for my new firm, I was thinking ‘how can I best help my fellow dirt contractors succeed in their work,’” Hammond says. “I decided to focus on the necessary tasks that contractors need to complete before any heavy equipment hits the site. Calculating the exact quantities of dirt for cut and fill on earthworks projects can provide better cost estimates, as well as determine resource allocation and project time.” Hammond first targeted smaller contractors that have limited staff but still have the critical need for accurate data. Larger contractors soon followed, seeing the advantages of having an outside professional take care of their projects’ dirt quantities needs. Today, Hammond Estimating & Consulting has about 20 solid contractor customers ranging in size from $1 million to more than $100 million in annual project volume. Using InSite SiteWork Earthwork and Utility Estimating Software, the company provides customers across North America with accurate calculations supported by graphics so they can visualize the cut and fill requirements on a project before they even start it. Learn more at www.ForConstructionPros.com/21021752. “Takeoff can take up to 80% to 90% of the time an estimator spends on a project. Today, there are excellent automation tools to reduce the time required in takeoff mode,” Davis says. “Today’s tools provide the ability for the estimator to spend less time in takeoff mode vs. reviewing and analyzing the estimate.” According to Davis, other features to keep in mind with estimating software include: ˜˜ Is the software simple enough to use, but provides more than just a spreadsheet? ˜˜ Can you embed your logic into the estimating system so it accommodates your unique way of looking at a project? ˜˜ Is the software flexible — can you make changes to both the estimate and database easily and quickly? ˜˜ Does the software work with both 2D and 3D information?

Clear communication can bring measurable savings. It can save time and avoid unnecessary re-work or other hassles. Project management software, including specialized estimating software (some of which is tailored to specific subcontracting fields in construction) is helping contractors bring clarity to their communications. It’s helping them stay competitive. In preconstruction, accuracy

and timeliness are essential. Changes in design can be made weekly, and owners expect to see the cost impacts of those changes quickly.

“We have cut the costs involved in generating a complex estimate by 50% and increased efficiency of the estimating process by 75%.” — Charlie Rowe, president of Echo Pacific Construction Inc., and a Sage customer “The process has moved from being ‘event’ driven to ‘process’ driven, with tens, even hundreds of estimates required to arrive at the final results. Today’s estimating tools allow estimators to quickly modify their estimates and compare old vs. new, helping owners make timely decisions throughout the process,” Davis states. Work time also can be drastically reduced with estimating tools. “With a couple

used to take at least half a day to set up a project in our accounting system. Now, it’s done in less than an hour.” Others swear by such technology. And results sell. “We have cut the costs involved in generating a complex estimate by 50% and increased efficiency of the estimating process by 75%,” says Charlie Rowe, president of Echo Pacific Construction Inc., and a Sage customer. TECHNOLOGY TRENDS

How the

iPAD BROUGHT A BRIGHT FUTURE to Construction NEW CLASS OF FIELD TECHNOLOGY

Another promising sign is the speed at which general contractors, and even smaller companies, are adopting new technology. This is in stark contrast to just three or four years ago when resistance to new technology was more pronounced. What firms understand today that they didn’t know just a few years ago is that investing in technology is going to increase their operating margins. Construction is a highly competitive and fragmented industry,

so any solution that enables a company to come to the table with a more competitive bid gives them a big strategic advantage. It’s also a differentiator. Owners and people paying for projects want to see technology in the hands of workers because they know they’re going to get better results.

TOOLS TO AUGMENT HUMAN WORK In addition to field technology, construction is seeing the early potential of exoskeletons and robots to create a safer jobsite. Construction really is the perfect ecosystem for an Internet of Things (IoT) deployment, with materials, equipment and people all working together in a dynamic environment. Technology is finally reaching the 67% of workers on construction projects that have never before had access to it. Companies like PlanGrid, Procore, Bluebeam and others are putting iPads and smartphones in the hands of field workers. The benefits for completing this last mile of data collection hold great potential — not just for the workers themselves, but for the entire project team. With the right field technology, you can understand the nuances of construction down to the crew level. This in turn enables you to make better decisions at each phase of the project life cycle — from design, to estimating, all the way through to project execution.

n 2010, Steve Jobs created a new digital product category that lived between a computer and phone. Prior to the launch, the Wall St. Journal said, “The last time there was this much excitement about a tablet, it had some commandments written on it.” The iPad was a game changer, and not just for the personal consumer. For the 15 years prior to the iPad launch, at a time when non-farming industries were seeing a huge uptick in productivity due to digital technology, the construction industry was actually becoming less productive. Does this mean that industry pros were purposefully ignoring the writing on the wall? Were pencils and paper so ubiquitous that any kind of disruption would prove to be disastrous to the bottom line? Or was it that the specifics of the construction industry didn’t yet lend themselves to the kind of technologies that were driving other industries? Things changed quickly in 2010 as cloud computing, broad band connectivity, lower costs and field-specific software took hold. Today, software is even more advanced and integration and adaptation are much smaller hurdles than in the past. So just how far will the industry go? The answer is up to the industry. There’s a current shortage of roughly 250,000 skilled workers in the U.S. with average labor productivity on jobsites still only at about 35% of maximum. We’re also building with an industry average of C- in

SIX STEPS TO

PREPARE FOR TAKE-OFF While design has long been digital, the physical world has not. Now drone imagery can digitize the physical world and provide builders with an accurate and up-to-date representation of a project. The hardware and software is advancing as well. Today, aircraft have the ability to fly autonomously, with the help of an embedded program. Drones have new sensing capabilities, smart cameras, and new interfaces. Hybrid drones, those that possess the capabilities of both rotary and fixed wings, are also seeing some new traction. All of this can enable greater productivity and insight into projects for workers. Drones can help with risk mitigation, resource planning, research and excavation, urban planning and more. “Put simply, new technologies, including drones and other robotic tools, have quickly become just another tool on the jobsite — and that’s exactly how it should be,” says Hugh McFall of 3DR. A recent edition of CONEXPO-CON/AGG 365 shared steps to ensure positive implementation of the technology and ongoing success for the long run. Learn more at www.ForConstructionPros.com/21021639.

R U N N I N G T H E BUS I N E S S By Garry Bartecki ® Published by AC Business Media

KEEP PACE or Lose the Profit Race

Garry Bartecki is the managing member of GB Financial Services LLP and a consultant to the Associated Equipment Distributors. He can be reached at (708) 347-9109 or gbartecki@comcast.net.

Also peek at your cash balance throughout the year because that is the real guide to how you are doing. This information gathering isn’t a big deal if you have an annual report prepared by your accountant. Most of the data should be in those reports. As an add-on to the list above, I would advise you to review all of the reports generated by your accounting system, whatever it was at that time. The one I remember is a One-Write System that allowed you to record expenses and payroll to a job card when you entered it into the journals — write it once and it appeared on the job card.

Stay competitive by using where you’ve been to determine where to go next.

NOW PREPARE FOR THE FUTURE

D

o you ever find yourself thinking about the past — especially past business practices associated with your type of work? I did exactly that the other day and was totally amazed how things have changed in a 20-year span. I am a CPA and was practicing as an audit partner with BDO, and can tell you we had a ton of people supporting the audit, as well the other service areas available to clients. I can think back to a time when there were no computers, no cell phones, no fax machines. We worked without many of the processes being automated. Heck, we were using messengers on bikes to send data in downtown Chicago. And then came the computer age. The result was we let a lot of people go, but in the end are far, far more efficient than we were in the past in terms of processing speed as well as cost reduction, and thus more profitable. How about you? Have you been through this exercise recently? If not, you should and sooner rather than later. The pace of change in the last five to 10 years is unbelievable and it’s expected to speed up in a very short time because of 5G, artificial intelligence and many other new digital equipment and processes.

REVIEW THE PAST AND PRESENT

Next — and this will sound a bit off the wall — I suggest you select one 100% “digitized” employee who understands the basics of the business system. Sit down with him or her to compare the past with what you have now, while also contemplating what you will need to have in the future to keep your business competitive in its niche. Because if you think you will be as profitable five years from now as you are today without becoming more efficient, think again. I would ask your helper to review the data you have, and determine if the system you’re using can produce the data you are looking for. The day of the Excel spreadsheet is over. Make sure the system you are paying for can produce what you need to run your business. The next question would be: “What else can we do to become more efficient and profitable?” Again, ask your helper what he/she would do via apps and other digital functions to cut costs, reduce time to produce a document and, in general, get more current data in your hands to keep you on top of work-in-process in terms of people and equipment costs. The benefits are there for the taking if you take the task of improving the efficiency of your company seriously. As part of the time lapse process, you need to bring your system rep in to discuss what you are not getting from the system you are using. You also need to know what other contractors in your space are doing with it that you aren’t currently doing. I would encourage all of you to take advantage of industry events, webinars, magazines and vendor knowledge and examine new products and services to see how they fit in with your work process. It is no secret that knowledge is power. The knowledge is available from many sources if you choose to find and use it. After you complete the time lapse exercise, you will be amazed at how much more you get done today with less. On the other hand, there is no doubt that the speed of change will increase, leaving behind those that don’t keep pace, which translates into less favorable financial results. So start searching for that “digitized assistant” and set up a time to determine how you will be doing business five years from now. ET

How you go about a time lapse review is up to you, but I would do a couple of things to prepare yourself before you dive into the comparison of now vs. the past decade or so. First, I advise you to dig out financial records from 10 to 15 years ago to compare costs and other KPI’s for your type of work. Also review your equipment depreciation schedule to see what type of equipment you owned and what it provided compared to what equipment is available today to do the same type of work. You now have a baseline at your fingertips in terms of: ˜˜ the number of people on the payroll; ˜˜ sales volume; ˜˜ a list of direct costs; ˜˜ your overhead makeup along with your allocation to work provided; To access previous Running the Business columns, as well as additional ˜˜ interest cost; business management information, visit www.ForConstructionPros.com. ˜˜ and net income before tax.
