LEAN, MEAN, CLEAN,
GREEN ELECTRIC MACHINES
I
n the last few years, the electrification of equipment has been a prominent discussion throughout the industry. Following the success of the automotive industry’s exploration of hybrid technologies, equipment manufacturers have followed suit, exploring greener ways of operation. This includes innovations like the aforementioned hybrid technologies, electric propulsion, propane, zero-emission diesel engines, lithium-ion batteries, and more. To meet stricter emissions regulations, to adhere to more environmentally friendly practices, and to keep up with an increasing industry demand, manufacturers are researching, developing, and partnering up with other companies to propel these ideals forward. For example, in February, JLG’s parent company Oshkosh Corporation announced an investment in Microvast, a provider of next-gen battery technologies, which aims to strengthen and advance the development of electrified solutions across the JLG product line, including boom lifts, scissor lifts, lowlevel access lifts, and more. Or look at Mecalac’s e12 electric compact wheeled excavator, which uses LiFePO4, or lithium iron phosphate battery technology, to provide a longer working range and a service life that is three times longer than classic batteries on the market today. In late 2020, JCB unveiled the
4

expansion of its E-TECH range of zero-emissions vehicles, including the company’s first electric Loadall telescopic handler and an electric walk-behind site dumper. They even developed a new rapid Universal Charger to provide a single rapid charge solution for JCB electric machines. “The pace of change is rapid, and we need to be equally quick in responding to the growing environmental challenge posed by climate change and the need to improve air quality,” said Tim Burnhope, chief innovation officer at JCB, in a press release. That’s a sentiment echoed by Snorkel in our article, Powered by Lithium, on page 18. After seeing a demand across the marketplace for cleaner, greener equipment, they developed a range of zero emission, lithium-ion battery powered work-at-height solutions. And they’ve developed, what they say, is a world’s first piece of equipment. It’s innovations like these that will continue to change the equipment industry, altering the rental market’s future for the better. But it doesn’t stop there. These machines and concepts hold the power (pun intended) to change the world and start a revolution that will impact the future of generations to come. What are your thoughts? Let me know at abrumm@acbusinessmedia. com. And, as always, stay green, stay safe, and stay strong.

MARKET WATCH CONSTRUCTION ADDS 110,000 JOBS IN MARCH Job growth was “widespread” in the month, led by gains in leisure and hospitality, public and private education, and construction, according to the latest report released by the department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics. Sectors critical to economic recovery saw some of the biggest gains as the construction sector added 110,000 jobs with commercial and residential homebuilding projects continuing to thrive. Projects also picked up in other states last month after severe weather halted work for much of the nation in February causing job losses of 56,000. For construction, it was the strongest month of hiring since June 2020. The industry has added 931,000 jobs since April 2020, recovering 83.6% of the jobs lost during earlier stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. A significant percentage of the job growth was registered in nonresidential construction, which added 73,100 jobs in March. “Here comes the tsunami of economic and employment growth across America,” said ABC Chief Economist Anirban Basu. “With more stimulus on the way, the United States may end up growing faster than China this year, which would be the first time that occurred in decades. GLOBAL CRANE RENTAL MARKET ANTICIPATES SIGNIFICANT GAINS THROUGH 2026 After an unprecedented year behind us, the construction market as a whole is looking towards the future with anticipation of growth, including the global crane rental market. According to a report by Graphical Research, a business research firm that provides industry insights, market forecasts, and strategic inputs, the crane rental market is forecasted to grow significantly over the next five years. This spike in growth is largely due to preferring rental cranes — opposed to buying new or used equipment. Businesses are finding that crane rentals are a solution to avoiding costly investments on purchasing new cranes, while receiving the benefits of rental services. These include repair, technical maintenance, and pick-up and drop-off. Here are key trends propelling growth within the global crane rental market. 1. Expansion of the telecommunication sector across North America. Currently, countries such as Canada and the U.S. are expanding their telecommunication facilities, investing in the development for a strong telecommunications infrastructure. This focus elicits the demand for cranes and crane rental services across North America. According to Graphical Research, the U.S. government is investing six billion dollars to develop 5G and other wireless technologies. This substantial project, as well as others, are already paving the way for regional market growth in the future. 2. Favorable financial situation. The rental crane market has an edge on other markets due to the low operating costs of renting cranes. In addition, renting cranes is more flexible, making it more feasible than other options available in the industry. 3. Crane affordability and innovative advancement in Europe. Cranes are constantly evolving, providing new innovative technology that streamlines processes, improves safety and efficiency, as well as alleviating any downtime. Although
8
MAY 2021
RPN0521_08-11_MarketWatch.indd 8
cranes are constantly evolving, the equipment remains relatively affordable. Now-a-days, there are flexible down payments or monthly leasing options available, creating an environment for crane rental to thrive. 4. Increased adoption of mobile rental cranes across Europe. Throughout Europe, Graphical Research anticipates for the crane rental industry to see its own spike in sales. This is due to the ongoing infrastructure projects throughout the country as well as expansion of cement plants. However, those aren’t the only markets seeing an increase, as the transportation and construction sectors are increasing productivity. These specific markets are the key to the surge in the use of mobile cranes for ongoing infrastructure development. 5. Infrastructure development by regional governments in Asia Pacific. In the Asia Pacific area, regional governments are initiating development in rural and isolated areas. These plans include providing electric facilities, power, and other utilities to these locations. This facilitates the demand for cranes as they are needed to provide continuous maintenance and upkeep of water, telecom and other electrical needs. MARKET WATCH RENTAL MARKET RECOVERY ACCELERATES IN Q1 2021 By Alex Prudhomme, senior industrials analyst, M Science
Recent data points in M Science’s work suggest the equipment rental market is experiencing a healthy and accelerating recovery, characterized by improving fleet utilization, moderating rental rate declines, a favorable capex environment, and widespread increases in hiring. Our data generally supports a more optimistic outlook and faster recovery than operators had forecasted several month ago, presenting an encouraging readthrough for 2021. Digital Reservation Volumes Suggest Higher Fleet Utilization in Early 2021 At M Science, we track online reservation volumes at United Rentals and Sunbelt as a barometer for underlying fleet on rent. Please note, due to the growing share of online orders over time, trends in our online reservations data typically outpace underlying volume growth on a Y/Y basis. Digital Reservations in Q1’21 signal a marked improvement in underlying activity levels with our data for both United Rentals and Sunbelt tracking well ahead of Q4’20, and accelerating through the course of the quarter with March volumes finishing up double-digits Y/Y at both operators. At United Rentals, digital reservations in our work increased 10 percent Y/Y in Q1’21 and 26 percent Y/Y in March, ahead of 6 percent Y/Y growth in Q4’20. March volumes were very encouraging and likely reflecting both improving underlying demand and a rebound from a slower February, which was impacted by weather-related delays. We expect growth rates are likely to accelerate further in Q2’21, lapping COVID-19 related headwinds. Hiring Activity Picking up Across Public Rental Houses Improving utilization volumes and growing customer backlogs have driven a recent spike in job postings across a sample
of public rental houses, including United Rentals, Sunbelt, Herc, and H&E Equipment Services. Aggregated job postings across this sample of operators increased 19 percent M/M in March to an all-time-high in our data, and are trending up 326 percent Y/Y against very easy year-ago comparisons. In the context of moderating rental rate pressure, improving fleet on rent trends, and reduced used equipment for-sale inventory, we view the pickup in hiring as an encouraging read into growing project backlogs and greater confidence in human capital needs in the coming months.
United Rentals and Herc Rentals Used Equipment Listed for Sale
Used Equipment Listed for Sale Reaches a Two-Year Low, Providing Encouraging Capex Outlook An improving demand backdrop and a disciplined approach to fleet management in 2020 have helped set the stage for heighted equipment spending in 2021. In our work, we observed a marked reduction in used equipment listed for sale across United Rentals and Herc with March listings reaching the lowest level in our dataset history (through Q2’19) and declining 31 percent Y/Y (Q4: -6% Y/Y). Reductions in for sale inventory are an encouraging read on improving supply-demand dynamics and supportive of a growing capex environment. Rental Rate Declines Moderate in Q1, Likely to More Notably Improve in Q2 At M Science, we track general rental rates for +600 equipment SKUs at +1,000 United Rentals’, Sunbelt Rentals’, and Herc Rentals’ branch locations to understand how rental rates are changing at the largest market participants (~23 percent of the market) on a bi-weekly basis. POWR2 1.2MW POWRBANK POWR2 has launched their biggest node sizes yet with the ability to provide up to 1.2MW of power output. Primarily serving the construction business, it became apparent there was a need for much higher outputs than was traditionally available.
ASV Maintenance Kits ASV Holdings Inc., introduced Maintenance Kits for simple and convenient ASV machine parts purchasing and maintenance. The kits include replacement filters for service intervals, and all parts included are OEM. • Convenient and simple, with all components in one place. • Include hydraulic filter(s), an engine oil filter, fuel filter(s), and air filters. • Include labeling with instructions for ASV’s ELITE line of high performance, heavy duty lubricants. • Engine oil, hydraulic oil, and grease products are extensively tested for use in optimizing ASV equipment. • Available through ASV’s dealer network. www.forconstructionpros.com/21389962
POWR2’s head of sales, Tim Doling, noted that traditionally renewable power systems have been thought of as a solution to take the low loads and then start up a generator to handle the peak loads. However, if you take this concept and turn it around, where a POWRBANK powers the peak load and the generator just recharges the battery, the savings are far greater, from fuel and emissions savings to even being able to downsize the generator. Items commonly powered with larger generators on construction sites are sized in accordance with the inrush current of a motor. This leaves the generator oversized for the majority of the work it is needed for. In addition to this, as we start to see other large, electric machinery coming to construction sites, additional power may be needed to supplement what the grid can provide. The renewable power system works like a large capacitor providing rapid charging. Sizes available are 250KW, 500KW, and 800KW, and each size has a 150-percent overload capacity for one minute. The POWR2 system allows companies to utilize solar and wind power if available, further optimizing their efficiency. www.forconstructionpros.com/21378509

E
lectric and battery-powered machines have quickly become a fixture in the construction and equipment rental industries, as electrification has become a major talking point throughout various industries around the world. Even tradeshows like ConExpo-Con/ Agg 2020 have seen an influx of hybrid and battery powered concepts, with electric backhoe loaders, compact track loaders, excavators, rammers, and more setting the scene. This is due to the not-so-quiet shift to more environmentally friendly practices and Earth-saving tendencies. For years, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has enacted stricter emissions standards to reduce emissions, eventually moving engines to the category of Tier 4 Final. And with technologies becoming more readily available, the increasing pressure of emissions regulations, and the impact of growing innovations, it’s no wonder that manufacturers are starting to charge up instead of gas up. But the demand for cleaner and greener equipment hasn’t stopped at just emissions. Manufacturers are taking advantage of recent advances in lithium-ion battery technology, with their overarching benefits of reduced noise, reduced service time, etc. While the auto, transportation, and construction industries have certainly gained momentum in their pursuit

of cleaner power technologies, the access equipment industry has been at the forefront of this movement for some time now. Research and development efforts of aerial lift manufacturers have been transcending decades, with electric drive systems providing eco-responsible machines to customers. One such manufacturer has been Snorkel, who released, what the company says, is the world’s first lithium-ion powered electric compact rough terrain telehandler, the SR5719E. Driven by increasing customer demand for cleaner, greener equipment as alternatives to diesel-powered machines, Snorkel stepped up to develop a range of zero emission, lithium-ion battery powered work-at-height solutions. This range includes the SR5719E, as well as five compact rough terrain scissor lifts, two Speed Level sigma boom lifts, and most recently, a mid-size rough terrain articulated boom lift. Delivering zero CO2 emissions, zero dust generation, and up to 60 percent less noise, the Snorkel line-up offers equal or better performance than diesel-powered models. With help from Snorkel, let’s dive into what exactly lithium-ion batteries are, their benefits, and finish with an inside scoop into the SR5719E compact rough terrain telehandler.

What are lithium-ion batteries, and how do they work? Lithium-ion batteries are an advanced type of rechargeable battery that use the movement of lithium ions to create the flow of electricity. They’re made up of four key components: the cathode, which determines the capacity and voltage of the battery; the anode, which enables the electric current to flow through an external circuit; the electrolyte, which serves as the conduit, and is formed with salts, solvents, and additives; and the separator, which is the physical barrier that keeps the cathode and anode apart. Lithium-ion batteries have a much higher energy density and a lower discharge rate, which means they lose around 5 percent of their charge a month compared to other battery types that lose 20 percent. For the Snorkel access equipment, lithium-ion batteries have replaced the traditional diesel engine to power an electric motor in place of the combustion engine. The batteries used come with an integrated battery management system (BMS), which
S

controls the batteries and maximizes efficiency. It is a low voltage system, so it does not require specialist high voltage training for any servicing requirements. And it’s also been tested in climatic chambers between -77°F (-25°C) and +140°F (+60°C). The overall operation of lithiumion battery powered machines remains largely the same as a diesel machine, but with zero emissions. The lithiumion powered lifts also benefit from higher torque, which delivers higher gradeability for enhanced performance on rough or uneven terrain versus the diesel models.
How do you maintain lithium-ion batteries? If you research the proper maintenance of lithium-ion batteries, you’ll see tips such as avoid heat and keep them cool, avoid too-cold temperatures and store them inside, avoid water sources, and don’t over-charge them. But it’s slightly different for batteries in pieces of equipment such as Snorkel’s telehandler. Unlike other types of batteries, such as lead acid, lithium-ion batteries are completely maintenance-free and do not require
www.ForConstructionPros.com/RENTAL
RPN0521_18-23_Powered by Lithium.indd 19
regular water level checks or cleaning of battery terminals. This eliminates the risk of frequent battery replacement should the correct maintenance not be performed. In addition to lithium-ion batteries being maintenance-free, the electric motor used on Snorkel’s lithium-ion range is also maintenance-free. When compared to the equivalent dieselpowered lifts that require regular servicing and maintenance, like frequent oil changes, filter changes, and occasional repairs, this represents a significant reduction in maintenance time and costs. In studies conducted by Snorkel, a lithium-ion-powered lift reduces servicing costs by up to 93 percent each year when compared with an equivalent diesel-powered model, helping to minimize total ownership costs.
What are the environmental benefits of lithium-ion battery power? We’ve mentioned just how important environmentally friendly practices are for the industry (and the world in general), but with an electric drive

motor and functions, lithium batterypowered machines produce zero CO2 emissions, meaning these lifts meet emissions regulations and can be used in zero emission (including indoors) or low emission zones where combustion engines may not be permitted. Battery power also eliminates the possibility of fuel spillage. These batteries also allow machines to reduce dust generation. Snorkel aerial lifts and telehandlers equipped with lithium-ion batteries don’t have an engine fan, and therefore, create less dust than machines with combustion engines, creating safer and cleaner operation that is ultimately friendlier to the environment. Another point that is important to make is that pollution isn’t always air-borne or litter. The use of lithiumion batteries and an electric motor also reduces noise pollution by up to 62 percent compared to a diesel engine. This means that lithiumelectric machines are suitable to work in environments where there may be noise regulations or on projects with longer working hours. This means crews can work longer shifts in urban or residential areas where out-of-hours

noise restrictions may be in place, as well as finish jobs quicker, saving both time and money.
What can be expected from lithium-ion battery powered equipment like the Snorkel lifts? The lithium-ion battery powered Snorkel lifts are designed to be highly efficient, deliver excellent performance including on rough terrain, and are smooth and simple to operate. Higher torque, higher speeds, and higher gradeability deliver rough terrain capabilities and gradeability up to 50 percent, depending on the model. This shows that lithium-powered lifts have the same or greater rough terrain performance than their diesel equivalents. On the Snorkel SR5719E, the lithium-ion battery is 300 amp hours (Ah). On the Snorkel aerial lifts, Snorkel uses lithium-ion batteries that are 111Ah each, and their standard is to use two batteries (222Ah). Users are able to increase the number of battery packs up to four (depending on the model), for a total of 444Ah. Depending on speed and usage, the machines are designed to perform up

AERIAL LIFT EQUIPMENT to a full work shift on a single charge. Lithium-ion batteries generally are fully charged in around five to eight hours, depending on the model, and can also be top-up charged (a term for charging electric vehicles) as needed to maximize productivity, like during a lunch break.
All Snorkel lithium-ion lifts come equipped with a standard on-board charger, and for environments where constant operation for long periods is required, optional off-board fast charger units are available. Lithium electric Snorkel lifts are also equipped with a digital proportional joystick to provide improved operator control and efficiency. Using the digital output to control the motor directly results in more tactile and responsive acceleration for noticeably smoother

performance on the job and an improved operator experience.
What else is exciting about the “world’s first” SR5719E compact rough terrain telehandler? Traditionally used in outdoor environments, compact rough terrain telehandlers are commonly powered by a combustion engine. By replacing the diesel engine and its related components with lithiumion batteries and an electric powertrain, the world’s first fully electric zero emission telehandler was created. The SR5719E is designed to be used in any environment from rough terrain to indoor applications. Featuring full-time four-wheel drive, it can tackle challenging outdoor terrain just like its diesel counterparts, yet thanks to zero emissions and zero dust generation, can remain on a construction project until the end, working indoors to support the final fit-out and clean up stages. The long-lasting 300Ah lithiumion battery provides up to six hours of continuous-use battery life, and a standard onboard charger is ideal for overnight recharging within 15 hours. An optional fast charger can be purchased, reducing the charge time to
within 1.5 hours. With no diesel fuel cost and significantly reduced maintenance costs, the Snorkel SR5719E delivers a low total ownership cost over the life of the unit. The increased purchase investment over the diesel version is amortized on average after about two years of work, and, according to Snorkel, the unit delivers a reduction in operating cost of approximately 60 percent compared to the diesel model. Of course, no one would trade peace of mind and that includes these battery powered machines, too. The lithium-ion battery pack is warranted by Snorkel for two years or 2,000 cycles, whichever comes first. At the end of the life of the battery, they can be returned to Snorkel for recycling – another green initiative by the company. To sum it up, lithium-ion battery technology is not only environmentally friendly, but also offers reduced maintenance, equal or better productivity, and the potential for time- and cost-saving opportunities. While electrification has steadily infiltrated the market over the years, it will be interesting to see where the market goes next... Including keeping an eye on Snorkel and their electric machines.

aintenance. It’s an unavoidable part of the job, necessary to keep things moving, mitigate equipment failure, and limit rental equipment downtime. Maintenance can also be a hassle — not unlike any routine task — but thanks to recent advancements in engines and engine design, it doesn’t have to be. Fortunately for the rental industry, manufacturers are developing features that reduce maintenance and associated downtime, which means more time on your customer’s jobsites. Unfortunately for rental houses, no one has yet discovered how to eliminate maintenance needs entirely. When it comes to maintenance, regular and preventative measures are essential. Here are the top seven maintenance tips and tricks to keep the engines in your rental fleet in premium condition to improve your customer’s productivity on the jobsite.
1. Fuel for Productivity An engine is only as good as the fuel you put in the tank. For years, fuel choices were limited to regular, unleaded, and diesel. Nowadays, you can add ethanol fuel blends to that list. Lower-level ethanol, typically 10 percent or less, is safe to use in most engines. Ethanol-free gasoline with an octane rating of 87 or higher is generally a good fuel choice. Choosing a fuel that is optimized for your engine is key to ensuring performance and avoiding engine issues, such as misfires and long-term damage.

2. Consider Propane
4. Swap Out Spark Plugs
While gas is the familiar industry fuel, in some instances fueling with propane can offer benefits and advantages for your operation. Propane eliminates some elements of operator error in environments where that can be a significant problem. With propane, spillage is never an issue. Using it can also help avoid fuel storage issues, as propanepowered equipment can be stored for long periods of time since propane isn’t susceptible to going stale. Using propane can impact your maintenance schedule by reducing the amount of time a crew spends refueling, as you can easily refuel on the job.
With time, spark plugs can be susceptible to carbon deposits and other types of performance-inhibiting damage. Worn spark plugs can lead to
engine misfires, stalling, and difficulty starting. Regularly removing and inspecting your engine’s spark plugs, and replacing when necessary, can help you avoid these issues.
3. Store Smart Storing your equipment is unavoidable at times but doing so can quickly lead to stale-fuel issues. Once fuel is added to an engine tank, it starts to lose volatility. To mitigate issues associated with stale fuel, such as diminished performance and vapor lock, fill your tank with fresh gasoline after removing equipment from storage. If you know equipment will be stored for significant periods of time, use a fuel stabilizer to combat stale fuel. Often, fuel stabilizers help prevent gum and varnish build-up, and can combat corrosion associated with ethanol fuels and chemical breakdowns.
The only time people notice an air compressor is when it’s not working. That’s why Jenny has basically gone unnoticed since 1927. It’s the hazard of offering the most reliable compressors on the market, but we wouldn’t have it any other way…nor would our customers.

waiting too long can lead to engine damage. Knowing your engine’s oil change intervals and adhering to them ensures your fleet can, and will, run like a well-oiled machine.
5. Opt for Oil Changes Foregoing oil changes opens the door for significant engine damage. Relying on oil past its service life means relying on oil with decreased viscosity and a diminished ability to correctly clean, cool, and lubricate your engine — all of which may lead to lower engine performance capabilities and lasting damage. While the industry is starting to see advanced oil management systems and improved options that extend oil change intervals, it’s still important to know and understand the guidelines for your fleet’s engines. Changing oil too often can waste resources, while

RPN0521_24-27_vanguards top 7.indd 26
6. Give Your Engine Fresh Air Fresh air is one of the key performance components in small, air-cooled engines, which means regularly changing the air filter is critical. Generally, air filters should be changed every 100 to 250 hours, depending on application and filter type. With advancing technologies, such as cyclonic air filtration, it’s important to choose OEM filters designed specifically for your engine to guarantee fit and performance. Often, these filters have a longer lifespan and will ensure better engine productivity.
7. Assess Your Fleet At the beginning and end of each season, take stock of your fleet equipment and the engines you rely on to keep them running. Are the engines older, no longer performing efficiently, or experiencing frequent issues? Can these performance issues be improved with proper maintenance practices or are they simply related to old age? If so, it may be time to replace an engine. Engine maintenance needs are being reduced and simplified as advanced technology continues to improve in the industry. However, performing proper maintenance will always be an integral component of ensuring your rental fleet is primed for productivity. Until self-maintaining engines are developed (a person can dream!), understanding your engine’s maintenance needs and sticking to a schedule is key to keeping your rental fleet up and running.

IMPORTANT TIPS FOR AIR COMPRESSOR MAINTENANCE
A
s with any piece of equipment, a strong maintenance program for your air compressors will ensure a longer life, optimal performance, and happier rental customers. Not only that, but properly caring for them will maximize the time they’re available to rent and earn you money. Fortunately for rental business owners and fleet managers, these power rental staples don’t require a lot of expensive upkeep or timeconsuming fixes. However, because of that, it can be easy to forget or neglect them, which makes for a costly oversight in the long run. On top of being proactive and committing to a program, it’s important to educate yourself about the maintenance cycles of each unit. As I learned writing this article, every manufacturer is different in maintenance requirements, and every job, rental company, and machine is unique. Listen to your customers about potential issues and train your staff to
28
MAY 2021

Proper maintenance should be a top priority, and creating a strong schedule for your air compressor might be the difference between a successful rental or a costly breakdown. recognize those problems as well. And make sure to document the service history of each unit in your fleet. Just ask Tehran Browne, product engineer, Mobilair, Kaeser Compressors, how important proper maintenance can be: “We recently identified a unit with 26,547 operating hours, and the primary reason that the unit is still running today is that the owner follows a strict maintenance schedule for all serviceable parts for the engine and compressor.” A rental opportunity can occur at any time, so it’s imperative that your compressors are operable and ready for delivery as soon as a request comes in. Therefore, developing and following a regimented maintenance routine will help you and your business get the most out of your air compressors.
Here are some of the top tips for maintaining your air compressors.
Tip #1: Read the Owner’s Manual. Reading the owner’s manual is step number one and the most important. Air compressors differ significantly from model to model, so checking the manual first will make sure you’re maintaining it properly for that distinct model’s specifications and factory maintenance intervals. The manual will detail simple tips that will help you get a longer life out of your compressor and will highlight important steps that you might not have known about otherwise. And, as we mentioned, it will talk about specific time intervals where maintenance items need to take place accordingly in order to avoid costly

To ensure proper maintenance of the compressor, units should be inspected daily for fuel level, oil level, and battery voltage.
equipment failures or breakdowns. While some may think they’re smarter than the manual, it’s safe to say that your equipment’s future will be better off if you take the time to read it. Bryan McCarron, Mi-T-M Air Compressor Division manager, says, “Proper maintenance extends equipment life, reduces unexpected breakdowns, and improves resale value. Good running equipment provides the customer a good experience.”
hoses for kinks, inspect electrical wiring for cuts and fraying, examine tubing and piping for damage, and make sure connections are tight. Then, look over controls, gauges, accessories, and instruments, making certain there are no loose mountings or damage. “Before each compressor goes out, rental centers should run through their list of basic maintenance checks to ensure the unit isn’t returned as nonfunctional, resulting in a lost day’s rental,” says Dan Leiss, president of Jenny Products. “These preventative maintenance checks only take a few minutes, but they can add months or years to the service life of a machine.”
MIGHTY MICRO MEANS BUSINESS
Skyjack’s new micro DC scissor lift represents a significant new presence in the low level access arena. Ideal for easy accessibility into tight spaces, it has a quiet and swift electric drive, and maintenance-free AGM batteries. The micro combines low cost of ownership with Skyjack’s renowned product support – all at a price that means business.
Kaeser Compressors
Remove the oil fill plug and check the level, then insert a screwdriver into the crankcase. Inspect the oil on the screwdriver for signs of contaminants, such as water and dirt, and change the oil if contamination is found.
Tip #2: Daily Pre-Checks.
Tip #3: Check Oil Levels.
Checking your equipment every day will help you avoid costly equipment failures or lost rentals. It’s important to thoroughly check returned equipment for any damage that might have occurred while it was out on rent, and you should always doublecheck the in/out process for equipment. When it comes to daily pre-checks, rental owners should do things like check
Like your car, many air compressor models feature oil and either a dipstick or an indicator (like a sight gauge) to monitor its levels. And, according to Kaeser’s Browne, compressor oil is extremely important to the function of the compressor. “Compressor oil lubricates the rotors, seals the rotors to prevent air leakage, and removes heat from the air.

WORKSITE EQUIPMENT One underrated quality of compressor oil is that oil is also responsible for cleaning the air of dust and particulates that make it past the air filter,” he says. Compressor oil should be checked daily, prior to operation, in order to ensure it is topped off and clean. You should be changing the oil completely if it’s contaminated or on an annual basis to ensure maximum functioning. But it’s critical for renters or your fleet manager to use the compressor oil specified in the service manual. Browne says, “Compressors are designed with a specific type of oil in mind in regards to heat absorption, and incorrect compressor oil can lead to overheating or potential damage to the compressor rotors.” Mi-T-M has a specifically designed oil called Shieldworks AW that Chuck Hamilton, director of marketing/ military sales, Boss Industries, says isn’t like any other product. “It’s designed to NOT separate the oil and water, but mix it together to move down stream to the filters plus still keep lubrication to the system. Other oils will block the lubrication properties when mixed with water thus creating failures,” he says. It’s also important to use lubricants with the correct viscosity. A high lubricant viscosity might prevent the compressor from coming up to speed fast enough or at all. High oil consumption is another potential problem. Leiss says, “This could be caused by a light duty cycle, damaged piston rings or excessive end gap, or a plugged oil crankcase vent. If the compressor becomes excessively hot, check the inlet filter and discharge line filter for dirt and ensure the lubricant level and type are correct.”
A tip from Kaeser’s Browne about other fluids:
“Check the engine oil, coolant, and fuel levels as well as the air inlet filters and fuel water separator. A clogged air inlet filter can lower efficiency and increase

operating temperatures. If the filter is lightly contaminated, you can blow it off. If it’s deeply contaminated or hasn’t
been changed in the last year, replace it. The fuel water separator and fuel filters ensure clean fuel is delivered to
www.ForConstructionPros.com/RENTAL
4/26/21 11:19 AM
Tip #4: Inspect Air Filter. The air we breathe contains millions of particles of dirt, dust, and other contaminants. These pollutants can become a problem for air compressors, causing valve malfunctions, obstructing lines, or inflicting unnecessary wear and tear. A filthy air filter ultimately hurts the compressor and forces it to work harder than it needs to, decreasing energy efficiency. Therefore, it’s imperative to inspect, monitor, and change air filters. They should be checked for excessive grime buildup every week, changing filters per manufacturer recommendations. This can be every six weeks or 1,000 to 2,000 operating hours, depending on the model. Environment will also play a factor in this, as, depending on the climate, air filters may need to be changed at higher frequency than what’s listed in the maintenance schedule. “In high moisture or humid conditions, service might be required more often,” says Hamilton. This step also ties back to our last tip about compressor oil. Browne says that maintaining quality compressor oil means users should be aware of the conditions of the compressor air intake filters, as well. Therefore, checking air filters and using correct compressor oil are both pivotal steps to proper maintenance of the compressor.
A tip from Jenny Products’ Leiss about air filters:
“Install the correct type of air filter for the day’s work. A standard filter will trap dust particles based on micron size,
www.ForConstructionPros.com/RENTAL
RPN0521_28-33_compressor maintenance.indd 31
while a coalescing filter will remove water and oil from the air. For an application like spraying paint, an air dryer should be used with the coalescing filter, so all moisture is removed from the lines. On the other hand, some tools function better with some moisture. When using a nail gun, for example, an operator may want to add oil to the line with a lubricator.”
Tip #5: Drain Moisture from the Tank. Air compressors have a receiver tank, which is responsible for collecting the moisture from the air that accumulates while the compressor is in use. Most tanks have a valve or two for draining this moisture, and your maintenance program should include draining them every day. Jenny Products’ Leiss says, “At the end of each day, if not more frequently, drain condensation from the air tanks. Begin by disconnecting the power source. If the unit is portable, move it into an inclined position with the drain at the lowest point. Slowly open the drain and bleed the air from the tank(s). When the pressure drops to 10 psi, the valves can be fully opened, and the tank(s) drained. The condensate may contain oil, so it should be collected and disposed of properly.” The key to this step is to open the compressor’s release valve(s) slowly. Opening them carefully helps to prevent scale, rust, or debris from being expelled at a high rate of speed.
W NE
the engine. If fuel has too much water, it can wear off the lubricants on the fuel injectors. Contaminants can cause wear and tear on the engine and compressor components. So, making sure the compressor has the cleanest fuel possible will keep it running the most efficiently and will prevent unnecessary engine and compressor failures.”

service-related warnings and address them as needed before renting the compressor to your next customer. Also, make sure you’re maintaining appropriate battery voltage. Low voltage can lead to unexpected errors on an electronic controller. On units without one, low voltage can prevent the unit from starting, which isn’t a good look. According to Sharma, Sullair compressors include a battery disconnect to help ensure that battery drain does not occur when the machine is in between jobs or not in use. With newer technologies and the digital age of smartphones being more prevalent on jobsites, some companies have turned to QR codes to help with maintenance. For example, Mi-T-M places a QR code on each unit, which will direct the user to the owner’s manual for easier reference to service and maintenance questions. Performing routine checks, tests, cleanings, and adjustments will help keep your air compressor running smoothly. And a strong preventative maintenance schedule might be the difference between a successful rental or a costly fix. As Mi-T-M’s McCarron says, “Equipment is the life blood of the business; keeping equipment rental ready is essential.”

■ Check vibration pads. ■ Check operation of system controls. ■ Test release valves. As you can tell, serviceability is an important factor for equipment. Manufacturers like Sullair are making it easier for rental businesses, as uptime and utilization are critical metrics for the industry. “Some portable air compressors, like the Sullair 375, now include access (doors) on all four sides of the compressor. This allows a technician ample space to work on the machine and quickly and easily access every component,” says Navendu (Nav) Sharma, director of product management, Sullair. Some compressor models feature electronic controllers that alert users when maintenance is needed. For example, all 185 cfm and larger Mobilair compressors come equipped with electronic controllers that provide the user with fault messages and service interval reminders for each maintenance item (oil, filters, etc.). The controller will also display battery voltage and fuel level, too. Make sure to check your compressor’s electronic controller for any

used equipment market in the shortterm as well to replenish their supply.
Q: What was the biggest lesson your company learned in 2020? A: The biggest lesson we learned throughout 2020 is the growing need to be agile and adaptive. We pride ourselves on being easy to do business with, it is part of who we are at Skyjack, but 2020 really showed us that it means more than flexibility for our customers. It meant working with our team members internally to adjust production lines, adapt workspaces, and find new ways to engage cross-functional teamwork in modified, or virtual, environments.
Q: What do you think is the future of the rental industry? A: I think we’ll continue to see an upward trend throughout the year as vaccinations take hold, economic faith is renewed, and infrastructure projects restart. A big factor that impacts the industry overall are challenges in the supply chain. As prices for commodities like steel increase, that may put additional pressure on OEMs to strike a balance in how those costs are absorbed. Overall, I see the rental industry performing well with larger companies investing in new equipment and smaller companies leaning on the www.ForConstructionPros.com/RENTAL

Q: What is next in terms of innovation? A: At Skyjack, we’re focusing our innovation on data-driven design. With permission from our customers, we’ve analyzed over two years of telematics data to see how equipment is being used in the field. Our studies consist of over 800 machines across North America and Europe, and reflect true jobsite usage, which are data points that have historically been out of reach without the use of telematics. The first large changes derived from data-driven design occurred this year with our 40-foot and 60-foot booms. Based on data directly from the field, we found that most operators weren’t using large engines to their full potential, so by moving to a 25-horsepower engine, they get similar on-site job performance, but without the added responsibility and costs of aftertreatments.
Q: What are some trends you are seeing throughout the industry today? A: Finding ways to connect with people virtually is still a
priority for many companies, Skyjack included. We launched our products this year in a way that was completely unique to us – a virtual trade show in lieu of in-person launches that typically happen at The ARA Show. We noticed other OEMs taking note and moving forward with similar ways to engage an audience from a distance. Our virtual showcase, SKYWORLD, is still live and will remain a source of information, videos, and more for the foreseeable future.
Q: Is there anything new and exciting on the horizon for your company that you can share with us? A: In addition to the four new products we launched February 2021, our team is also hard at work refreshing our TH Series telehandlers. Using similar principles as what we did for our boom range, we’re identifying areas we can help reduce the overall cost of ownership for rental companies and make Skyjack telehandlers the machine of choice for on-site operators.
Q: One final fun question… What is your favorite ice cream flavor? A: It’s a tough fight between vanilla or rum and raisin. If readers decide for me, I will happily eat a tub!

Q: What was the biggest lesson your company learned in 2020? A: Even though 2020 presented our industry with many challenges, I think we learned that we could adapt to these challenges and utilize technology to continue to take care of our customers and build on these relationships.
Q: What do you think is the future of the rental industry? A: I think it will continue to grow and develop. With the high cost of equipment acquisition and maintenance, contractors are finding it more and more attractive to rent in many situations. Excavators are becoming the swiss army knife of heavy equipment. Adding specialty hydraulic attachments like thumbs, grapples, breakers, and shears have helped many rental companies expand their excavator customer base. Machines equipped with telematics improve efficiencies by tracking usage, location, and reduce downtime by allowing remote access to fault codes and machine health. The technician can understand the problem and have the parts before ever going to the jobsite.
Q: What is next in terms of innovation? A: Innovation is something that can be inspired from many different areas and ways. As an example, the
36
MAY 2021

advancements we have seen in the automotive industry can give us a perspective, or looking glass, into what could be in the heavy equipment industry. From cameras and semi-automation (selfparking cars), the automotive industry helps to keep things interesting. In the heavy equipment industry, this innovation is being accepted at a rapid pace. Looking at the Link-Belt Precision Grade offering, you can quickly see something today that was never thought of years, or even a decade, ago. The ability to operate an excavator semi-autonomously is something from the future we see in Hollywood films. One can expect improvements and evolution in this offering and other areas of the business in the near future.
Q: What are some trends you are seeing throughout the industry today? A: Pipeline business is down significantly, but the utility business has picked up. With this, we have seen a shift from large excavators like the 490x4 and 350x4 to mid-sized excavators like the 145x4, 210x4, and 245x4. Rubber tracks and dozer blade options are also becoming more popular.
Q: Is there anything new and exciting on the horizon for your company that you can share with us? A: Even though our Customer Experience Center was officially opened in 2019, several important meetings were scheduled to allow dealers, customers, and industry organizations to come to Lexington to see the facility and showcase our state, city, and company. As the environment continues to improve and open up, LBX looks forward to increasing the opportunities to host events and expand upon our presence in the industry.

Q: What do you think is the future of the rental industry? A: We are very optimistic about a strong rental market in 2021-2022. The rental industry is growing and innovation in this market is accelerating. That usually favors renting versus buying. We are seeing a strong trend of new homebuyers that are investing heavily in home investments.
Q: What is next in terms of innovation?
A: There are a number of areas where innovation will continue to make a significant impact in the rental market. At the engine level, we continue to make advancements on small engines to reduce fuel consumption and improve performance with Vanguard Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) and Electronic Throttle Control (ETC). In electrification, we’ll continue to see advancements with fully electric and hybrid product offerings and a growing charging network. The IoT, or Internet of Things, will continue to be a hot topic that will help us build smarter, more connected equipment. Telematics will provide a significant boost to rental fleet owners

through usage tracking and theft reduction. Everyone is wondering when we’ll reap the benefits of fully autonomous equipment, but don’t overlook the impact that semiautonomous features will begin to make an impact over the next few years. But while there are a lot of flashy possibilities for innovations over the next few years, we can’t forget the innovations that will make it easier to use the equipment and reduce downtime. Those will be the most effective innovations in the near future.
Q: What are some trends you are seeing throughout the industry today? A: Integrating technology into rental products and engines will continue to be a hot trend. We are continuing to see rental yards looking to reduce downtime as much as possible. One way this can be achieved is by lengthening maintenance intervals on an engine. With the increase of DIY customers, we are also seeing more innovation that promotes the ease of use for equipment. We are also seeing more OEMs put emphasis on virtual product training for rental yards. More DIY customers are renting through local commercial rental yards over the last year, and this has contributed to a rise in mid-sized equipment rental.
Q: Is there anything new and exciting on the horizon for your company
that you can share with us? A: Vanguard continues to expand its lineup of engines equipped with electronic fuel injection (EFI) and electronic throttle control (ETC), which improve performance and load acceptance, offer better fuel efficiency, and easy all weather chokeless starting. In addition, Vanguard continues to add to its broad V-Twin EFI engine range. The most recent addition to the lineup being the 29.9 gross kW/40 gross HP* engine featuring EFI and ETC. Vanguard also continues to expand its commercial lithium-ion battery system, which provides an integrated electric power solution for multiple applications. Starting at a 3.8 kWh power output, battery packs are also available in 5 kWh and 10 kWh power outputs. The batteries offer flexible power solutions as the packs can be stacked to provide higher power output suited to application needs. We also continue to build extensive online training courses geared toward rental customers through Vanguard University. Reducing maintenance for Vanguard engines is also a key priority, and we’ve addressed these in our single cylinder engines with the cyclonic air filtration system, OilGuard, and TransportGuard technologies. * Power levels are stated gross kilowatts

Q: What was the biggest lesson your company learned in 2020? A: Flexibility. Compressed air is critical to many industries, and we were constantly adjusting to meet the needs of our customers— from contact-less service for our stationary compressors to extra precautions with freight deliveries for our portable compressor rental customers. We also started renting more than just portable units for those companies with fluctuating production or those needing more air in a hurry. Also, while in-person interactions still remain very important for fostering business relationships, modern technology has allowed us to do much of the product demonstration sales process virtually. Moving forward, I think video calls present significant time savings for salespeople who learn how to make the most of the technology available.
Q: What do you think is the future of the rental industry?
38
MAY 2021
RPN0521_34-49_advertorials.indd 38
A: The rental industry will continue to grow and thrive with more diverse products and services. Our compressor business has seen increased interest in our models outside the traditional 185 cfm compressors. For example, our M27 (92 cfm) model has become very popular along with our M171 (550 cfm) model. These cater to more specific needs, and rental companies are expanding their reach to meet these demands.
Q: What is next in terms of innovation? A: More electric driven equipment. In the next few years, we will see a wider range of battery powered portable compressors. Just like the automotive industry, Kaeser is looking to reduce the impact to our environment with electric power.
Q: What are some trends you are seeing throughout the industry today? A: As mentioned previously, the 185 cfm compressors still make up the majority of rental compressors in the market today. However, we are seeing increased interest in other sizes of compressors as well as compressors with specialized options such as variable pressures and air aftertreatment options. Rental companies are reaching more specialized markets, and these markets require them to offer a more diverse range of equipment.
Q: Is there anything new and exciting on the horizon for your company that you can share with us? A: Kaeser is broadening our portable compressor offerings and is adding several new model sizes in the coming year. We are excited for the new compressor models to help address the needs of our customers, and we will be releasing more information later this year.
Q: One final fun question… If you could switch places with anyone, who would it be? A: The people with the most shares of Zoom and Amazon stock. Or someone who had a nice getaway cottage or campsite in the mountains or on a lake.

How to Clear Grease Clogs - Fast! Ask the Drain Brains. Q: We rent drain cleaning snakes to a local fastfood chain, but my customer is unhappy. They try to clear their grease clogged drains with my snakes, but the clog comes right back. Is there a better tool to clear grease clogs? A: The best tool to clear grease clogs quickly and easily is a water jet. Grease creates what’s called a selfhealing stoppage, where it sticks to the walls of the pipe. So, when your snake punches a hole in grease to get
www.ForConstructionPros.com/RENTAL
RPN0521_34-49_advertorials.indd 39
the water flowing, you haven’t really cleared the clog completely. Water jets are ideal for clearing grease, as well as flushing sand and melting ice. Jets use a stream of highpressure water that cuts the grease off the walls of the pipe and flushes it away. The thrust of the nozzle drives the hose down the line for wall-towall cleaning action. Electrc jets typically offer a maximum of 1,500 psi. Trying to get more pressure from an electric motor runs the risk of pulling too many amps and popping breakers. It’s better to
use a gas-powered jet. You get twice the pressure and flow rate of electric jets to handle larger and longer lines. But beware of trying to convert your pressure washer into a water jet. Jets use vibration to overcome the friction in the pipe and help the hose glide around bends and farther down the line. If you don’t have pulse, the hose could get stuck in the pipe. Q: What was the biggest lesson your company learned in 2020? A: We definitely learned that we had to be more flexible in how we worked, both internally and with our customers. Throughout the pandemic, we’ve pivoted and found new ways to work through and around manufacturing and shipping challenges. I think we’ll be able to take what we learned last year and apply it from now on, improving our efficiency and versatility.
Q: What do you think is the future of the rental industry? A: The rental industry will need to be able to adapt to changing customer demands quickly. While rentals were down in 2020, from what I’ve read, equipment spending is forecasted to improve in 2021. It will be a while before the industry bounces back to where it was before COVID-19.
Q: What is next in terms of innovation? A: At Takeuchi, we’re looking forward to battery-operated excavators and remote diagnosing tools. Energy efficiency, sustainability, and helpful, easier-to-use technology are all ways we can continue to differentiate our compact equipment from the competition.

Q: What are some trends you are seeing throughout the industry today? A: Machines need to be more versatile; customers want to be able to get more done with fewer machines. Fortunately, we’re staying one step ahead of the game by introducing our new attachment program earlier this year. Attachments and auxiliary hydraulics are key to making machines useful in a broader range of applications, and we’re offering both to help our customers get more value from their machine investments.
Q: Is there anything new and exciting on the horizon for your company that you can share with us?
A: As Takeuchi continues to grow and listen to our customers, we have a few new products coming to the U.S., but we’re not quite ready to announce them yet. Stay tuned!
Q: One final fun question… If you could go back in time and give yourself one piece of advice when you started your career, what would it be? A: Enjoy the ride more. We are too focused on the goal, the promotion, the end result. Usually, the ride is more fun than achieving the goal, so it’s important to appreciate every day and every challenge along the way. ®

Q: What was the biggest lesson your company learned in 2020? A: That’s a bit of a loaded question. The COVID-19 pandemic we faced in 2020 threw us so many unanticipated curve balls as a company and as an industry. I’d say the most important lesson was to take decisive, people-first actions when a situation required it — actions that protect the health and safety of our employees, our customers, our business, and the industry as a whole.
Q: What do you think is the future of the rental industry? A: The future of the rental industry often follows the same path as general construction. Right now, there is a large focus on adopting and utilizing connected and sustainable technologies, as well as an increasing demand for compact equipment — and on the other end of the spectrum, higher-capacity equipment. These trends are driven by things like electrification, urbanization, and the productivity imperative. People are being asked to do more with less, in tighter spaces, under stringent time and budget demands in a manner that is minimally disruptive to the environment. Equipment manufacturers, and in turn rental companies, will need to continually evolve and offer technologies and features that allow equipment users to be successful in these areas. www.ForConstructionPros.com/RENTAL
RPN0521_34-49_advertorials.indd 41
Q: What is next in terms of innovation? A: At JLG, we are looking at innovation beyond what is incorporated into the product. From a technology standpoint, we’re working to develop digital solutions and tools that are useful on the jobsite to improve safety and productivity. One example is our Augmented Reality (AR) App, which delivers data through five modules to help customers plan projects more accurately. Training with the use of technology is also a focal point. We recently expanded our virtual reality training with AccessReady Fusion XR, which provides an immersive, virtual reality-based training for users of all skill levels. But rest assured, we aren’t ignoring the products themselves. With the recent launch of our DaVinci scissor lift and investment in Microvast, you see our commitment to electrification.
Q: What are some trends you are seeing throughout the industry today? A: Some of the trends we are watching in the industry include electrification, urbanization, ladder replacements initiatives, and the growth of mega warehousing/ distribution centers and data centers.
Q: Is there anything new and exciting on the horizon for your company that you can share with us? A: In 2021, we continue to focus on elevating the access industry in three key areas: productivity, safety, and technology. While we consistently watch trends, we also actively watch how customers are using JLG products. The pain points we observe directly drive our innovation process, something we call “customerinspired innovation.” This process is evolving and has moved from a focus on incremental product changes to transformational innovation designed to provide substantially safer machines for end-users and new revenue streams for our rental channel partners.

Q: What was the biggest lesson your company learned in 2020? A: Last year was unprecedented in many ways. The global shock to the economy created a lot of uncertainty. As a manufacturer of jobsite products for the rental industry that are used daily on jobsites across the globe, we had to figure out how to react. Staying in touch with customers became challenging, expected demand for products shifted dramatically, and we had to forge a path forward into uncharted territory. The biggest lesson we learned, despite all the headwinds, was the resiliency of the rental industry. The capacity to manage and support end-customers despite the challenges, and rebound at the speed by which organizations have, is incredible. It speaks volumes of the people and organizations that dedicate themselves to serving their customers and overcoming any and all hurdles to keep jobsites running, whatever those may be!
Q: What do you think is the future of the rental industry? A: One area receiving a lot of attention is the push for IOT-enabled (Internet of Things) technologies. It allows rental customers to gather and use diagnostics, geo-location, and performance data to improve their experience and drive efficiency in all aspects of rental. Also, the efficiencies of LED lighting technology is gaining speed in the market. Due to the impacts of the pandemic, platform adjustments for remote access and

monitoring of equipment location, performance, and lessening the requirement of physical interaction with products are being accelerated. In addition, we’re seeing increased interest amongst rental houses in hybrid technologies that use batteries, remote capabilities of operation, monitoring, and efficiency improvements across the life cycle of jobsite equipment. At Allmand, we’ve listened and responded with our new line of light towers, the Night-Lite GR-Series. This new series includes three light towers solutions – diesel air-cooled, diesel liquidcooled, and electric chain – giving customers options that fit their needs and matches the forward pace of the industry.
Q: What is next in terms of innovation? A: At Allmand, we remain focused on providing industry leading products that continue to drive innovation in safety, ease of operation, fuel efficiency, low maintenance cost, and operational gains. From an operational perspective, we’re working to extend service intervals, increase run times per tank of fuel, create LED lighting that offers the appearance of natural light with greater coverage and programmable capability.

Q: What is next in terms of innovation? Q: What is the biggest lesson your company learned in 2020? A: The pandemic challenged businesses to adapt and look at many things differently. For Hatz Diesel of North America, as for everyone else too, the word of 2020— unprecedented—applies. One lesson was to pay attention to the small things. In order to stay profitable through such “unprecedented” times, it required managing the details. Secondly, and I think most importantly, it was uniting and focusing the entire company on a single goal of “beating the pandemic.” We shared in the hardships and celebrated the victories equally and together, and we did not close a single day in 2020 and the bulk of our staff remained in the office. This reinforced the fact we have special people and a special team.
Q: What do you think is the future of the rental industry? A: One thing I believe is that as equipment becomes more complex and expensive to own, rental fleets will assume an increasing percentage of the equipment population. One result will be an evolution in the relationships between engine manufacturers, OEMs, and the rental industry.
www.ForConstructionPros.com/RENTAL
RPN0521_34-49_advertorials.indd 43
A: Clearly electrification is gaining traction as improvements in technology are allowing electric equipment to move from the consumer to the commercial market. At the same time, I believe this is revealing a growing place in the commercial and rental markets for hybrids.
Q: What are some trends you are seeing throughout the industry today? A: I think the electrification and hybridization trends also tie into other trends, like fully electronic engines, integration or engine and machine diagnostics, and of course, telematics and connectivity.
Q: Is there anything new and exciting on the horizon for your company that you can share with us? A: Of course. As of January 2021, Hatz Parts are available through SmartEquip. Hatz is hopeful that this availability will help our rental customers and OEMs meet customers’ needs and be assured of a consistent and positive experience. Additionally, Hatz Diesel’s new flywheel integrated permanent magnet generator (fiPMG) engine is an exciting new product gaining a great deal of attention with customers worldwide. The fiPMG is a unique concept that combines
the Hatz E1 technology, the world’s first electronically controlled single cylinder diesel engine, with a PMG generator installed where one would normally find the engine flywheel. This combination results in a more compact generator package, which can operate at variable speeds, based on load, and is available in both AC and DC at multiple voltages. Then, next on the Horizon for Hatz will be some exciting IoT developments that will bring a new level of connectivity for our customers.

Q: What is the biggest lesson your company has learned over the past year? A: The events of 2020 and into 2021 have been challenging, but have also taught us some really valuable lessons. The one that sticks out in my mind is the importance of relationships. Without a doubt, we’ve learned so much over the past year when it comes to resilience, flexibility, and perseverance, but it’s been our relationships with our internal team, rental representatives, channel partners, and end users that has really helped us. Our trustbased relationships have sustained us through these challenging times and will be the driving force into the future as economies begin to open, and we all begin to regain a sense of normalcy.
Q: What do you think is the future of the rental industry? A: We are really confident in the strong foundation of the rental industry both as it stands today and well into the future. Our industry is interesting in the sense that in times of economic uncertainty, we have historically been insulated in the rental segment as contractors will forego planned capital equipment purchases and opt to rent equipment instead.

A: There stands to be some remnant uncertainty in the industry until we can completely put the pandemic behind us, but we believe that this is indeed temporary and we’re certainly optimistic for the next 12 to 18 months. What that means for Toro specifically is that we’re going to continue to invest in our products, our people, our channel partners, and our relationships with our end users so that when we look back at 2020 and 2021 a couple of years from now, we’re doing so from a consistently strong leadership position in the rental industry.
A: Rental businesses are all about maximizing profit and providing simple-to-use intuitive equipment solutions to their customers. As such, those are two key factors that influence our product development efforts from the very first time a new idea is brought to the table to when units are rolling off the production line. Frankly, we focus on developing durable, reliable, and highperformance machines because that’s what keeps rental store customers returning time and time again. Our practical innovation efforts focus on bringing solutions to the rental market that stores are proud to carry, and the end-user can easily understand and operate.
Q: Is there anything new and exciting on the horizon for Toro? A: There’s always something new and exciting happening at Toro. Most recently, it has been the introduction of our MB TX 2500S Swivel Mud Buggy, built on the same frame as the popular MB TX 2500 Tracked Mud Buggy. The new model features a redesigned tub that enables it to swivel 180-degrees. Also our Toro e-Dingo 500 — the first Dingo of its kind — powered by Lithium-Ion batteries and delivering zero exhaust emissions. In the short- to mid-term, as the pioneer of the compact utility loader class, we’re always working on our Dingo line, providing rental stores and their customers options when it comes to applications.
Q: If you could have dinner with anyone, who would be your top three choices? A: At this point in the pandemic, I’d be content with having dinner with mostly anyone if it meant that we weren’t confined to dining in my home or in a plastic igloo on a restaurant’s patio.

needs for our customers and the industry really is at the heart of the Genie strategy.
What were some lessons learned in 2020, and what can we expect to see in 2021? We know 2020 was a hard year, but we do see recovery occurring in 2021 with customers buying equipment and putting the machines to work. As that occurs, equipment owners are looking for reliable equipment that performs on the jobsite while also lowering total cost of ownership. There’s also an increasing need to do more with a single machine, both lifting more and operating in more locations. This is why Genie has focused so heavily on increasing the capacity of our boom lifts and expanding the options that are available at the platform. And finally, both in 2021 and in the years ahead, I expect we’ll continue to see an expanding market for clean-energy machines that are productive and cost-effective, with demand increasing for electric and hybrid technology. Meeting these

What are some of the products that you’ve launched over the last year? Earlier this year, we introduced the new Genie GTH-1056 telehandler, which features a 30% stronger design that improves uptime and durability, can lift 20% more at max height, and lowers total cost of ownership by 10%. And, just before 2020 ended, we launched our E-Drive, an optimized AC Electric drive system available across our entire line of GS slab scissor lifts. Last year, we added the S-60 J and S-80 J articulating boom lifts to our lineup.
What does Genie mean when they say their boom lifts are right-sized for every jobsite? Every jobsite has its unique challenges and requirements; there is a lot of variety in the type of work that end-users are doing. For rental companies that serve customers in a range of industries and trades, there is no “one-sizefits-all” approach when it comes to their equipment fleets. This is especially true for rental fleets that include different makes and models of
mobile elevating platforms (MEWPs). Our goal at Genie is to address the industry’s needs with rentable MEWP solutions — increasing jobsite productivity for end-users (the rental customers), while delivering a high rROIC (rental return on invested capital) for equipment owners (the rental companies).
What are the different types of Genie boom lifts and what applications are they well suited for? The XC product line, which stands for Xtra Capacity, is available on both telescopic and articulating models. To give customers the flexibility of performance and a lower total cost of ownership, the J-series offers essential performance in a simple package. Eliminating the need for customers to manage two separate fleets of machines — one for indoors, one for outdoors — the Genie Z-45 FE and Z-60 FE hybrid articulating boom lifts respond to increased demand for versatile and cost-effective “green” access solutions.
And, finally, just for fun… If you could only watch one movie again for the rest of your life, what movie would that be, and why? Toy Story. This one always brings me back to the fun of being a kid and letting your imagination run wild.

What was the biggest lesson your company learned in 2020? We remained committed to staying engaged with our employees, many of whom had to work from home for a period of time, as well as interacting with our customers. We updated training programs and used virtual meetings to train employees and customers on how to rent, sell, and operate our products properly. The end result was employees who had purpose during a very challenging time as well as customers who gained valuable knowledge on the proper use of our products.
What do you think is the future of the rental industry? We see the need for power continuing to grow and the storage of that power becoming more prevalent in rental fleets. This need for power generation and electrification will continue to drive the specialization of rental fleets.
What is next in terms of innovation? Hybrid power generation and power storage will continue to evolve, and we believe will soon become common products found not only in power generation rental fleets but general rental fleets.

What are some trends you are seeing throughout the industry today?
Is there anything new and exciting on the horizon for Alliance North America?
The pandemic brought on the expansion of contactless transactions, and our industry adjusted very quickly. These contactless transactions will help with customer efficiencies at the time of pick-up and delivery, but the possible consequence could be less interaction with rental store counter personnel. Many rental stores are developing their websites to better assist customers with selecting the proper equipment for their needs. Manufacturers are already being asked to assist with useful tools to support rental store websites.
ANA is introducing new AIRMAN products this year both in portable air compressors as well as our prime power generators. We just introduced an 185 cfm utility mount air compressor, and we will soon introduce a 220kVA prime power diesel generator.

a Q: What was the biggest lesson your company learned in 2020? A: 2020 has certainly been interesting, but through adversity comes strength; we are stronger for 2021. We’ve all had to take a hard look at our priorities. Some businesses have thrived through diversification and successfully reshaped whole organizations; we applaud their courage and success. At POWR2, like every other organization, we looked hard at all options and decided that continued laser focus on our existing mission was the path to take. We decided to weather the storm of cancelled capex budgets, no events, and shut down construction sites to focus on
development and refinement of the market leading POWRBANK. As a result, we’re going into 2021 with confidence and a stronger offering. Lesson learned? Laser focus pays off.
Q: What do you think is the future of the rental industry? A: As construction companies focus more on sustainability, we will see a swift growth of sustainable equipment options and alternative fuels. We are already seeing this in Europe, and the USA is going in the same direction. I expect there to be electric machinery – excavators, solar light masts, hybrid power systems on all construction sites in the next five years. The rental industry in itself will see growth as the concept of rental is more of a sustainable option than owning.
Q: What is next in terms of innovation? A: The development and implementation of sustainable solutions that achieve a net zero construction site.
Q: What are some trends you are seeing throughout the industry today? A: We’re seeing that professional power rental companies are becoming more and more aware of the need to offer more sustainable power solutions. This is often driven by the rental company’s own

strategy to stay ahead in the market by aligning with the global trend towards use of alternative energy. It’s also driven by corporate sustainability strategies of their clients, whether it be one of the major data companies on a new data center build or a construction company with carbon reduction goals.
Q: Is there anything new and exciting on the horizon for your company that you can share with us? A: We recently released our biggest node sizes yet with the ability to provide up to 1.2MW of power output. The sizes available are 250KW, 500KW and 800KW, and each size has a 150-percent overload capacity for one minute.
Q: What is your favorite type of vacation? A: My favorite is traveling to new cities/countries around the world and exploring the culture and places of interest.

Q: What was the biggest lesson your company learned in 2020? A: Perhaps the fact that the pandemic hit so many rental companies so severely, while so many rental companies went unscathed (and actually grew). It was almost like a tornado that rips through a city and demolishes certain streets, and the other parts of the same city are untouched. The lesson was understanding how many rental companies were unprepared to weather the severe financial storm caused by the pandemic. Some simply didn’t have the reserves, but considering the capital-intensive nature of the business coupled with enduring the worst economic disaster in 100 years, it is not that surprising.
Q: What do you think is the future of the rental industry? A: My view is that the future of the rental industry remains very strong and will likely gain momentum.
Q: What is next in terms of innovation? A: I think that innovation will continue on a number of fronts. In particular, I feel that there will be major advancements in improving the customer experience and the technology of rental equipment. www.ForConstructionPros.com/RENTAL
RPN0521_34-49_advertorials.indd 49
Q: What are some trends you are seeing throughout the industry today? A: I see a growing need for highly effective and efficient formalized (yet customized to their company needs) training for almost every position in a rental company. I believe that in a matter of months, or by early next year at the latest, there will be the worst shortage of quality applicants in the history of the rental industry. Coupled with full employment there is a steepening learning curve for employees working in the rental industry, partially caused by the much higher tech advances in an increasingly large amount of rental equipment. There is so much to learn.
Q: Is there anything new and exciting on the horizon for you and your company? A: One of the areas that gives me great satisfaction is assisting my customers in finding better and more systematic ways of operating their businesses. I plan to devote even more of my time to helping the smaller independently owned and
operated rental businesses. It pains me to hear how some rental business owners work so hard and have so little to show for it after all of their effort. I really want to help them increase their income by establishing a more systematic approach to hiring, training, and every other critical aspect of their business.
Q: You rubbed a magic lamp! What would your three wishes be? a. I’d wish for more people to view the rental business as a career choice. b. Higher rental rates to compensate smaller rental business owners for everincreasing rental equipment prices. c. That more would view employee and management training as an investment, not just an expense.

QUESTIONS to Correctly Size a Generator
C
orrectly sizing a generator for a customer is vital to taking the best care of your generator fleet. You want to make sure they have enough power, but not enough that there will be issues with light loading, inconvenient regens, or lockouts. How can you best prepare your counter person to right-size the generator? Here are six simple questions to ensure the generator suggested to the customer is correct for their application.
1. Is the load going to be a single-phase (1Ø) or threephase (3Ø)? This is one of the most important items to know before starting. Understanding what phase the generator needs to be placed in will address what voltage requirements are needed by the customer to properly operate their onsite equipment.
2. What is the voltage required: 120/240, 120/208, or 277/480? Once the phase requirements have been met, then you as the provider can set and lock the appropriate voltage per the generator’s selector switch. This presents an opportunity to fine-tune the generator to the voltage for proper operation of the customer’s equipment. There is a voltage adjustment knob (potentiometer) located on the face of the control unit to do any modifications once the unit is on-site.
50
MAY 2021
RPN0521_50-51_6 generator questions.indd 50
3. Do you know how many amps are required? By knowing what amps are required to run the customer’s piece of equipment, you can properly utilize the correct generator size for the job. Having this information can be vital in the success or failure of the application. Too big of a generator for the appropriate load and you will underutilize the generator’s potential and cause engine issues such as “light loading” or “wet stacking.” Too small of a generator, and the customer’s equipment may not run at all.
4. What is the item you are trying to run? (Motor or pump? What is the horsepower?) In all cases, when sizing a generator to a particular application or customer need, knowing what the customer is operating is extremely helpful. By communicating with the customer, you
can understand what type of equipment they are running on location and build a “load profile” based on this information. For example, are they using submersible pumps to move liquid products? Then knowing the horsepower and/or the NEMA code of the pump is critical in choosing the properly sized generator.
5. Is the application standby, prime, or continuous? One of the key components of sizing is the time in which the unit will run. The buildup of heat in a generator’s windings can cause a derate inability. Altitude and run times can have a dramatic effect on the generator’s performance. In the simplest of terms, consider that mobile diesel generators are rated in Prime Power, operating for eight hours per day in a rental application. The longer the run times at higher

loads, the more harm can occur to the • 3Ø 3phase kW x .72 = 1Ø Single Joseph Norris generator’s windings. Long run times with For other helpfulpaving sizing formulas, America (ANA Inc.) zero loads on the generator can hurt forconstructionpros.com/21366351. the engine.
6. Will multiple items be run at the same time? Knowing what types of loads will be running simultaneously is also a determining factor when sizing a generator. The use of multiple voltages on the same generator can create a difference in performance. If renting a single unit to, say, a construction site application, what type of toolage will be used at the same time on the generator? This means lighting, pumps, grinders, saws, electric appliances, etc. If the primary voltage being used is three-phase, then only the convenience outlets are available for minor single-phase voltage output. Contrary to that, if the unit’s main output is desired to be a single phase, then three-phase power will not be available. Asking and answering these questions with your customer before a rental can greatly increase their onsite production to ensure a proper quality rental experience. Your customer may not know the answers to all the questions; however, by doing this due diligence and information-gathering, you can ensure that you are giving the absolute best advice possible to properly size the generator to the application. This in turn will keep your fleet in proper working order as well as keep a happy customer base.

POWER RENTAL //
By Matt McDonald
The
CLEAN POWER SOLUTION Rental Customers are Looking For
Propane generators give rental customers undeniable reliability and nonstop power— without sacrificing environmental impact.
B
usiness is booming for the generator rental market. Are you taking advantage? According to data from Transparency Market Research (TMR), the generator rental market had an annual total near $4 billion in 2016 with forecasted growth to over $7 billion by 2025. As more customers come seeking power generation solutions, it’s important for rental store owners to be well-versed in which options best suit their specific needs. Carrying and offering propane-powered generators will help rental store owners set themselves up for success and increase customer satisfaction because of the key advantages propane offers compared with other options. Most notably, propane offers crews a reliable, nonstop source of power in an industry where time is money — and it doesn’t sacrifice sustainability in the process.
Uninterrupted Power for Maximum Uptime Remote power on jobsites is a critical component, which is why construction crews require a power generation solution that can perform anytime, anywhere. This is especially important
for crews working on jobsites located off the grid or not yet connected to the local power grid. Propane, because it’s an independent and highly portable energy source, can supply power and energy resiliency to jobsites regardless of their location. Plus, propane is a stable, reliable energy source that can power everything from small, portable generators to large, towable generators. Propane’s dependability and versatility allows rental customers to maximize productivity, run a self-sufficient jobsite, and ultimately, work with peace of mind.
Better Adherence to Environmental Regulations A growing number of customers are facing increasingly stringent environmental regulations, meaning that clean, low-emissions jobsite equipment is in higher demand. Rental store owners can meet this need by offering propane-powered equipment, including generators. Propane is a lowcarbon energy source that produces significantly fewer emissions than diesel, gasoline, and electricity. Most notably, using propane
produces 43 percent fewer greenhouse gas emissions than using an equivalent amount of electricity generated from the U.S. grid, according to data from the Propane Education & Research Council (PERC). Further, data from the Department of Energy (DOE) shows 16 percent greater carbon dioxide emissions per unit of energy for diesel compared with propane. Additionally, the Clean Air Act qualifies propane as an approved clean alternative fuel. Propane can be stored on-site, either above or below ground, without risk of land or groundwater contamination. Diesel, on the other hand, has the potential for contamination from spills and leaks that are retained in the soil.

and confusion. Fortunately, almost all new indoor use equipment has a carbon monoxide detector onboard. If you are using temporary propane heaters and equipment in a closed indoor area, just make sure that equipment is designed for indoor use.
10 Safety Reminders for Managing Propane on Jobsites A component of safety that can often be overlooked is safety related to the fuels being used on site. Here are 10 key safety reminders for working around propane-powered light construction equipment: 1. Make sure that everyone on site is familiar with propane safety procedures and knows how to identify a propane leak. Propane is naturally odorless and nontoxic, so processors add a chemical odorant called ethyl mercaptan to help users detect leaks. If employees get a whiff of rotten eggs, you likely have a leak. Turn off the propane supply and call your supplier. 2. Know the signs of carbon monoxide poisoning, which can include headache, dizziness, weakness, chest pain,
3. Keep temporary propane containers at least 10 feet from ignition sources, combustible materials (such as lumber and brush), air intakes, and building structures. 4. Always keep cylinders in the upright position on a flat, stable, fireproof base. 5. Use crash protection and bollards to prevent potential damage or denting to propane equipment, cylinders, or containers. 6. Follow proper refueling procedures. When refilling propane cylinders on
BE ON TOP OF EVERY REPAIR!
site, safely do so outdoors or in an approved filling area and with the proper PPE. 7. Keep a propane cylinder’s pressure relief valve clean, unrestricted, set to the 12 o’clock position and directed upward at a 45-degree angle when the cylinder is mounted horizontally. The pressure relief valve provides overpressure protection. 8. Close the service valves on propane cylinders when not in use. Turn them clockwise until completely closed. 9. Store cylinders in a secure rack or cage. They should be protected from sunlight and rain. 10. Lean on your propane supplier. They can work with you to ensure the proper placement and handling of propane equipment. To read more, visit forconstructionpros.com/21378264.

How to Generate More Rental Income
by Christopher Tacheny
FROM YOUR GENERATOR INVESTMENT Understanding the Pieces
LET’S START WITH CONNECTORS
■ California Twist Lock – This is used to connect a cable to a receptacle on the generator. It’s easy to recognize because the receptacle has a “spike” in the center with slots arranged in a circle around it. For a typical 25 to 60kW generator, you will need one rated for 50 amp service for each receptacle on the generator.
A
s last winter’s events in Texas demonstrated, the portable and emergency power market represents an excellent growth opportunity for independent rental operations. If you already own towed gensets in the typical 25 to 60 kW range, adding a package of cables, connectors, and accessories is an obvious way to increase per-rental income while providing a more comprehensive service to your customers. But if you don’t speak “electrician” fluently, the industry terminology and broad range of product specifications can make assembling a practical and economical package a challenge. Fortunately, there are only a few things you really need to know and they’re not all that complicated when put in layman’s terms.
■ Camlock –This typically is used to connect larger generators to equipment intended to support high-demand applications up to 400 amps. Each connector carries current from a single pole, which means that a typical connection will use several Camlock connectors and cables.
• NEMA – The National Electrical Equipment Manufacturers Association (NEMA) develops standards for a broad range of electrical equipment and applications, in this case for electrical connectors. The NEMA connectors you are most likely to encounter are the twoor three-prong connectors commonly seen on tools and appliances connected to standard AC power sources. They can be configured with straight prongs for direct insertion or with curved twist-to-lock prongs. The most common examples are rated for 20 or 30 amps. Of course, connectors aren’t much use without cables. These are designated by the number of individual conductors in the cable and the wire size that’s expressed
54
MAY 2021
RPN0521_54-57_generator investment.indd 54
according to American Wire Gauge (AWG) standards. You will see designations like 6/4, 2/5, and 12/5. It’s somewhat counterintuitive, but the smaller the AWG size, the larger the wire itself. Thus, an AWG 0 is larger than an AWG 5. The other thing to look for is the ability of the jacket material to withstand things like sunlight, oil, ozone, acid, and water. The most practical cables for general purpose use will be labeled SOOW meaning they are resistant to sunlight, oil, ozone, and water. Unless the total output of the generator is going to be connected to a single load, you will need some kind of power distribution hardware to convert the single input into multiple outputs. There are three basic ways to accomplish this: www.ForConstructionPros.com/RENTAL

WORKSITE EQUIPMENT ■ Spider Box – This is a small, highly portable accessory that is connected to the generator and contains multiple circuit breakers and output receptacles to service several different loads. For 25 to 60 kW generators with built-in California Twist Lock receptacles, the spider box typically uses the same connector for input. A broad range of output options are available, but the most common are GFCI and NEMA receptacles.
■ Power Distribution Panel – This is essentially a big spider box that is able to handle much higher loads. It typically would be connected to the generator with camlocks rather than California twist locks. Up to 10 spider boxes can be connected to a single power distribution panel.
■ I-Line – This is essentially a very large power distribution panel suitable for loads up to 3,000 amps.
Putting it all Together
Moving to the Next Level
Starting at the generator, a basic accessory package would include a 50-foot 6/4 SOOW rated cable with 50 amp California twist lock connectors on both ends. If the generator has two receptacles, then two cables are required. Each generator cable is connected to a spider box input receptacle with the other California twist lock. Usually, 50-foot cables are recommended to provide maximum flexibility in locating the generator and distribution accessories. Anything shorter limits placement options and anything longer becomes increasingly difficult to handle. Fifty feet is the sweet spot, and they can be daisy chained to reach any practical desired length. The spider box should be specified with a 50 amp circuit breaker at the input to protect everything downstream. The most useful outputs for general applications are 20 amp, 120 volt GFCI and 30 amp, 250 volt twist lock receptacles. A typical Trystar spider box will provide up to six GFCI duplex receptacles and one 250-volt receptacle, all protected with individual circuit breakers. Extension cords to power end-user requirements can be plugged directly into the spider box. Where many devices need to be powered, Trystar recommends a quad box stringer cable that combines three independent circuits each powering a dual outlet box into a single unit.
While a basic package of cables and spider boxes will serve the needs of most applications requiring 25 to 60 kW generators, there are many rental opportunities for larger equipment that also can be serviced with a just a few add-ons. Large generators don’t typically have permanent receptacles for California twist locks, but require cables to be hard wired to bus bars. In that case, a “pig tail” with bare wire on one end and a camlock on the other is required. The generator cable would be connected to a power distribution panel or an I-line, and that output would then feed either spider boxes or high end-user loads directly. If a large generator is already in your rental fleet, or one is planned for the future, then a relatively small additional expense would open a wide range of opportunities. And if it isn’t, a basic package of cables and spider boxes will still let you grow per-rent income from your existing generators and provide a more comprehensive service offering Christopher Tacheny to your National Account Manager customers. Trystar Either way, it’s a win-win.

RENTAL’S RECOGNITION CORNER
It’s no secret that businesses have struggled throughout COVID-19. But with all challenges come rockstars, who oftentimes work behind the scenes and make an impact. Tom Butts, owner of Nor-Cal Equipment Rentals in California, knows all about that. He has such a person on his team, and her name is Missy Soda. She takes care of two departments, HR and accounts payable, and according to Butts, has been working double-time during the pandemic. “She’s had her hands full this past year during COVID-19, along with just handling the current growth of our company. She has kept us all on track though,” Butts says.“We would not be where we are today without her guidance and dedication to Nor-Cal Equipment Rentals.” Soda has been with Nor-Cal for a little over three years. She became part of the family on a whim, after a conversation at a Super Bowl party about filling in for someone on leave led to her helping out. A week later, she started, and within two weeks, she was offered the opportunity to work at Nor-Cal full time. No matter what teams were playing that day, it seems that Nor-Cal ultimately was the winner getting an employee like Soda. Thanks to Tom for his nomination, and a big, hearty “way to go!” to you, Missy! Keep it up!

From events and disaster recovery to mining, roadwork and large industrial facilities, Wacker Neuson’s extensive line of generators is performance driven. This includes use in extreme conditions. That’s why we’ve become the preferred supplier of mobile generators with optional cold-weather packages. Our complete range delivers when it counts most with a host of benefits for rental fleets and end users, including: • A user-friendly design with simple operation. • The quietest in-class generators for the most sound sensitive applications. • An easy-to-read control panel that features intuitive diagnostics capability. • Custom factory-installed options, including: positive air shut-off for oil and gas, and three-way fuel valve for auxiliary fuel tanks and cam locks.
• Low cost of ownership and longer uptime is a result of service efficiency, better fuel economy and long service intervals. • Larger units include Level Load Logic (L3) which is an effective and economical solution to wet stacking and generator reliability in light load conditions. The L3
is automatically activated when it senses a less than 30 percent load and low coolant temperature. The system improves cold weather performance, protecting your capital investment and reducing repair and maintenance costs. Wacker Neuson’s mobile generators range from 25 kVA (20kW) to 180 kVA (143 kW) and are designed and manufactured in the company’s Wisconsin facility. All models offer the durability and reliability rental center operators and users depend on to meet serious power needs.

INDUSTRY UPDATES UNITED RENTALS SHARES FOUR TIPS ON PROPER USE OF TRENCH PROTECTIVE SYSTEM TABULATED DATA Trench and excavation operations are among the most dangerous jobs in the construction and utility industries. While most trench fatalities happen in unprotected trenches, studies estimate that 24 percent occur when sloping, benching, shielding, or shoring is used improperly. In these tragic incidents, OSHA tables and charts for sloping, benching, timber shoring or manufactured systems with tabulated data using shields or shoring are not being followed. PREPARE YOUR
RENTAL TEAM
terovesalainen @ adobe.stock.com
with First Impression Training
Learn how to train your team to make the most of the economic recovery and every customer interaction.
L
ast month, I gave some practical ways to get ready and make the most of the upcoming economic recovery. This column is a continuation on that and the importance of focusing additional attention on what customers see, hear, and experience. Again, the goal is to maximize the growth of rental income and training your staff can be one of the primary keys to unlocking that potential. One way to stand out from competitors is by having your employees better trained in customer communication techniques. Plenty of companies have equipment-experienced employees with a fair degree of product knowledge. However, few have invested enough in developing the communication skills of their staff. There are huge benefits in training employees to enhance their verbal as well as non-verbal communications. For example, it’s amazing how slight facial expressions, grooming, and posture changes can improve the chances your company’s message of care, concern, and quality will be received by
66
MAY 2021
RPN0521_66-68_EyeOnRental.indd 66
your customers. Are your customers really being greeted properly when they call your company? Perhaps your employees need additional training in professional telephone skills. Even if they are proficient in how to look up equipment availability and can dispense rental rate information, they may be unskilled in the extremely important “first impression” portion of the task. Are they, for example, smiling when they first answer each call when identifying the business and their name? You know that customers and potential customers are more likely to do business with rental companies that do so. But do your employees know this and are they practicing these techniques every time? Over-the-phone first impression training should include the use of questioning, respect, timing, conversation
tempo, sounding friendly (even on hectic days), and other details that are all part of professional training. Not only are callers more likely to rent from you when they receive this treatment, they are more likely to rent additional items. Another area that is extremely important is the “walk-in customer” first impression experience. Are your employees greeting them in an upbeat fashion as soon as they see them? It’s amazing how many times I’ve observed employees not even say “hi” to customers. Are your employees greeting customers with a smile? Remind your team that smiling is more than just a telephone skill. Walk-in customers (as well as customers who are receiving delivered rental equipment) prefer to rent from rental companies that have friendly, upbeat, smiling employees. All employees who have contact with customers should consider themselves as salespeople. Therefore, they should be trained to be skilled in the most effective salesmanship techniques, including how to close a sale. Truly effective training bridges the gap from wishing employees would attempt to “build the order” and “close the sale” to actually doing so. All employees have heard the words “first impressions are important,” but how many really know what to do and are actively practicing the art of maximizing the customer’s first impression experience? Your staff may not be giving your customers the treatment that you know would be highly effective in growing your income and company. Finally, keep in mind that better training programs help with employee retention. When employees feel confident and strong in their duties and are continuously learning new skills, they tend to stay longer.
