he Tasmanian government recently outlined its plans for its forestry sector, which essentially rely on less interference from bureaucrats and a more commercially sustainable approach to forest industries. The move promises to return a once great forestry hub to prosperity and, more importantly, provides a simple model for moderation in dealing with our greatest renewable natural resource. Tasmania’s forestry pedigree cannot be challenged. The vast swathes of forest provided a mouth-watering source of materials for ship building when the first European settlers arrived in the 1800s and have since played a key role in the southernmost Australian state’s business and cultural identity. But as a central source of wealth and cultural value, it has been the subject of almost continuous controversy. How much old growth forest should be devoted for commercial use has been the most public debate, though there has been a more general discussion over administration and the government’s role in a sector that has increasing moved to preserve the state’s old growth resource. Leading into the global financial crisis, a buoyant economy had allowed the balance between protecting Tasmania’s forests and maintaining a vital source of economic stimulus or, more specifically, jobs, to become skewed. The economic challenges that ensued from 2008 combined with the failure of Australia’s forestry powerhouse, Gunns, put the forestry sector under immense pressure, which was worsened by the installation of a Labor-Green Party coalition in 2009. During this period, the Tasmania Forestry Agreement retired more than 150,000 m3 of sawlog production, halved the production forest available to Forestry Tasmanian – a government business – and forced significant write-downs to Forestry Tasmania’s balance sheet. Forestry Tasmania netted a A$43 million loss in the 2014 fiscal year despite significant financial support from the government – Forestry Tasmania received some A$100 million over fiscal 2013 and 2014. This reeks of maladministration.

The solution being executed by the Liberal government, which swept aside the coalition in 2014 for its best result for 60 years, is relatively simple: • Forestry Tasmania’s operating model will be reviewed to ensure it is streamlined, efficient, and unconstrained to achieve optimal commercial performance • T he private sector will responsible for wood harvesting and supply • Forestry Tasmania will grow, manage and facilitate the private sector in line with legislated conservation and production objectives. It is a simple model that works in so many other sectors but its application to the business of forestry has been retarded for too long by high profile, evocative minorities that have found soft ears in overtly populist governments. In fairness to the coalition, the balance between preservation and exploitation is not an easy one to strike. Our forests, particularly old growth native forests, are a beautiful and invaluable resource that should rightly be protected. This is as true for Tasmania as anywhere else in the world. Millions of dollars and countless hours have been ploughed into deciding the appropriate percentages of native forests that should be available for harvesting and, more generally, how other forestry resources should be managed. This issue of native harvesting has the ability to evoke powerful opposition to forestry in general from a public that stands at arm’s length and is essentially ignorant of the nuances of our industry. Those closest to the industry and best informed, such as those who rely on it for their livelihoods, are too often overlooked or accused of bias. This current leadership has outlined a starting point for protection and production that should allow conservation to exist alongside exploitation. Enjoy! Chris Cann Editor

International Wood Biorefining Week, 24-26 May 2016 in Stockholm. Forestry’s most important meeting places join forces – three strong events under the same roof Bioeconomy Innovation Forum. International Pulp & Paper Week continues the tradition of fairs for the pulp and paper industry that have been organised by Adforum since 1968. The latest event was held in cooperation with a Swedish pulp and paper organisation in Stockholm in 2011 and brought together 650 exhibiting companies from 30 countries plus almost 10,000 visitors from 56 countries.

Biobased products

Adforum, the world-leading organiser of trade fairs for the pulp and paper industry, and Elmia, whose fairs include the world’s leading bioenergy fair, have agreed to combine their fairs to create a strong and timely meeting place in the forest industry. Starting in 2016 the previous forest industry and bioenergy fairs will all form part of International Wood Biorefining Week, 24-26 May in Stockholm. “This will be a long-term collaboration together with our joint partners,” explains Marcus Bergström, CEO of Adforum. “The

forest industry is experiencing very powerful change in which synergies and integration between various sectors in the industry are increasingly important. Our customers have long desired fewer, more multifaceted, bigger and, above all, more timely meeting places in the industry where they can meet relevant business partners and customers. Now we can finally offer them that.” The three events included in International Wood Biorefining Week are International Pulp & Paper Week, World Bioenergy and

World Bioenergy has been organised by Elmia and it’s partner Svebio, since 2004 and has for ten years been an important marketplace for suppliers and purchasers of products, technology, services and expertise in the bioenergy sector. “Thanks to Sweden’s leading position in the bioenergy field, it has been possible to develop World Bioenergy into a global event with participants from 80 countries,” comments Torbjörn Johnsen, Business Manager Forestry at Elmia. “When we launched World Bioenergy, the growth area was by-products from tree harvesting and the sawmill industry. Today

we have a totally new situation with a pulp and paper industry that is investing heavily to create an integrated process industry in which bioenergy is becoming an ever more important part of the product mix.” Bioeconomy Innovation Forum is a new event for new and innovative products from the forest industry. The focus is on bioplastics, textile fibres, nanocellulose, carbon fibre, packaging, biochemicals and wooden structures. Exhibitors at this event will encounter not only visitors from the forest industry but also from other industries with an interest in biobased products. “For this event we will also be inviting visitors from other manufacturing industries with an interest in forestry’s sustainable solutions,” Marcus Bergström says. “It’s important to create a dialogue between various industries and to enable forestry companies to meet their customers. Lumber prices hurt loggers, help processors Lower demand and a strengthening US dollar have sent lumber prices plummeting in the first quarter to their lowest levels in more than two years in North America and Europe, according to the Wood Resource Quarterly. Import prices to Japan and China have followed a similar trend, although the decline has been less dramatic North America So far in 2015, the lumber market in the US has not improved as much as some market observers predicted (or hoped) last year. US housing starts during the four first months have ranged between 900,000 (February) and 1.13 million (April) starts on a seasonally adjusted annual rate. Despite housing starts being lower in the first quarter this year than in the last quarter of last year, lumber production in the US and Canada has increased slightly. Lumber prices in the US have fallen substantially over the past nine months, with southern yellow pine being down almost 30%, douglas-fir declining 18% and spruce-pine-fir in Western Canada dropping 28%.

Northern Europe Lumber prices in the Nordic countries have fallen substantially since last summer (in US dollar terms). The price declines in Finland and Sweden from August to February were 18% and 22%, respectively. Current price levels are the lowest since 2009 in both countries. The competitive prices in US dollar terms have resulted in a sharp increase in shipments from Sweden to the US, though these levels are still low. Finnish sawmills have shipped more lumber to China, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the UK so far this year as compared to 2014.

lowest level since late 2012. Russian lumber continues to be the low cost supplier. Low prices persisted into the second quarter, at least partly prompting increased lumber imports across a number of key markets. Demand for imported softwood lumber in China sky-rocked this spring after a slow period from August 2014 to March 2015. In February, import volumes were down to 860,000 m3 for the month, a two-year low. In just two months, shipments doubled to 1.7 million m3 for the month of April, the second highest monthly import volume on record. Year-to-date import volumes were 2.1 percent higher this year than during the same period in 2014, with Russian shipments having increased 13%, as reported by Wood Resource Quarterly. Russia’s share of total softwood lumber imports to China has climbed steadily the past four years from 36 percent in 2011 to approximately 47% for the first four months of 2015. Most of the other major lumber-supplying countries to China have reduced their shipments this year, specifically the US (-41%), Canada (-3%) and Chile (-3%). Lumber volumes from the Nordic countries

have gone up dramatically in early 2015. Although this region supplies only four percent of the total import volume, it is still noteworthy that shipments from Finland and Sweden were up by 52% and 32% respectively, year-on-year. Since these two countries supply softwood lumber with some of the highest average import values (about $260/m3 CIF) of all countries selling lumber to China, it is an indication that demand for higher quality wood is in increasing demand, reports WRQ. Sweden exports mainly spruce lumber to China with about 20% being planed wood. A majority of Finnish lumber is also spruce, with the remaining volume being pine. Overall, lumber import prices to China have trended downward in 2015 with the April average prices reaching their lowest level since late 2012. Prices for Nordic lumber have fallen steeper than those for lumber from other major supplying countries. Russian lumber (mostly pine) continues to be the lower value wood, while the average cost for lumber from the Nordic countries, Chile and New Zealand currently is almost twice as high.

Russia With the decline in the value of the Rouble, Russian lumber has been become more competitive over the past 15 months. In dollar terms, the fall in the Russian currency has been about 27%, and in Euro terms, just over 8%. The average value of exported lumber from Russia has declined from $180/m3 in early 2014 to $130/m3 in March of 2015. However, Russian sawmills have been slow to take advantage of their country’s weak currency.

Japan So far this year there have been only been price adjustments in lumber prices in Japan. Average prices for the domestic Sugi have declined slightly in US dollar terms but were unchanged in Yen terms. Of the imported species, European whitewoods and Canadian hemlock have decreased the most, each falling about five percent from January through May.

China Demand for softwood lumber in China has increased swiftly this spring. In February, import volumes were down to 860,000 m3, a two-year low, but have since doubled to 1.7 million m3 in just two months. Average import prices have fallen this year, with April prices reaching their

A big need for investment in Romania’s well-managed forests The process happened fast when investments in new forest technology began in the three Baltic states and Poland. Now a similar development is underway in Romania.

Romania is the most forested country in southeastern Europe

R

omania is the most densely forested country in southeast Europe. The forests are well managed, the stocks of standing timber are large and the opportunities are significant. “The country has a solid knowledge of forestry but productivity needs to be increased,” comments Torbjörn Johnsen of Elmia, who has visited Romania several times while planning the upcoming forestry fair Forest Romania. Romania has 6.4 million hectares of forest, of which 70 percent is hardwood and 30 percent softwood. There are plans to increase the area of forested land by planting another a million hectares by 2020.

Increased extraction Currently about 19 million cubic metres of timber are felled per year. At the same time, the standing stocks will grow by more than 6 million cubic metres per year,

thanks to an annual growth of 25 miljon cubic meters. “The trees have to be felled with chainsaws and whole stems are then skidded out,” explains Anamaria Deliu, who is Elmia’s project manager for the fair. She comes from Romania and previously worked at the country’s embassy in Sweden. Skidders are a type of machine that was common in Nordic forestry until the end of the 1960s. Horses are also used to skid out timber to some extent. A low level of technology leads to low productivity but the situation is acceptable as long as wages are also low. However, wages in Romanian industry are rising and this is also driving higher costs in the forest and the availability of labour. If the Romanian forest industry is to withstand competition from within the EU, modernisation and rationalisation are necessary. “Currently there is only one manufacturer of forest machines in the country and they make skidders,” Anamaria Deliu says.

State-owned forests The forests are largely publicly owned. Fifty percent is owned by the national government and the rest belongs to municipalities, the Church and private individuals. Even though large tracts of forest land have been privatised,

the control of forest management and timber felling is still centralised. A national authority draws up forestry plans and produces ten-year plans of which areas and what volumes should be felled. The felling rights are auctioned off, primarily to private contractors. “There are about 2,500 active contractors,” Anamaria Deliu explains. “Many of them are companies that are responsible for the entire chain from felling and transport to processing. The landowners are responsible for replanting and forest management.”

Long-term commitment The ownership structure and legislation, combined with the mountainous terrain, mean that foreign technology and methods cannot simply be transferred to Romania. The country requires long-term commitment and involvement. At the same time, major potential exists in what is one of the EU’s more heavily populated countries, with 20 million inhabitants and a location bordering on Hungary, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Moldavia and Serbia. Forest Romania is being held on 16-18 September 2015. It is Romania’s first demo fair in the forest. The organisers are Elmia, which organises the

world’s biggest forestry fair, Elmia Wood, and DLG, which organises Agritechnica, the world’s biggest agricultural trade fair.

Several reasons lie behind the interest in this type of machinery. They include the long driving distances out to a road and demands to reduce ground and erosion damage, but also that a “forwarder culture” is now starting to gain a foothold in Romania. Radu Țițeiu, sales manager for John Deere’s Romanian distributor Elmas, explains what he means by the term: “Many Romanian forest machine contractors work abroad in countries like France and Germany. There they come into contact with forwarders and see close up how this technology works. Forwarder culture also means more specialised and well-trained machine operators, a greater focus on productivity, safety, a better work environment and higher operator wages.” A representative of Forest

Romania visited the contractor company Prod Lemn Mujna S.R.L, which was felling in a stand of thick-stemmed deciduous trees just west of the city of Sighisoara in Romania. “We have a long experience using forwarders. It started with a used Timbjerjack and four years ago we dicided to buy a new John Deere 1210E,” says Asztalos Endre, owner of the company. “It worked really well so far, says the machine operator Karsai Levente. “If the terrain is really steep we also use our skidder to collect the timber in the forest before the forwarder drives it down to the road. With the forwarder we take 15 cubic metres per load, almost twice what we can take if we use the skidder”.

Cost savings According to Karsai, the average forwarder distance is about 1.5 kilometres and profitability can be achieved for distances up to 2 kilometres. “One of the reasons that we started with forwarders is that we

Because many contractors in Romania have their own sawmills they can immediately see the cost savings when stones and gravel do not wear out the saw blades as quickly. “About 80 - 100 forwarders are currently operating in Romania but that figure is increasing by 10 to 15 percent a year,” Radu Țițeiu says. He believes many contractors will eventually work with various combinations of system in which skidders, cable systems or winch mounted on forwarders gather the stems from the steepest areas and then the forwarders do the long-distance haulage out to the roads. Several major forwarder manufacturers already have distributors in Romania. John Deere’s distributor Elmas puts a strong effort to develop the market. It has built up a highly modern service and training centre in Sanpaul, which trains between 10 and 15 machine operators every year. Some of the training is done in simulators and students are

offered room and board in pleasant quarters.

Used machines are the way in Investing in a new forwarder for 2-300,000 Euro is too great a step right now for many Romanian contractors. Therefore the ability to import good used forwarders from the Nordic countries is an important pre-condition for establishing the technology in this market. “We sell many used forwarders from Sweden here in Romania,” Țițeiu says. “A typical machine is five to six years old and has about 15 to 18,000 operating hours. Medium-sized forwarders such as the John Deere 1110 D are popular but there is also a good market for bigger forwarders like 1410D too as previous sales from Elmas have proven.” In September this year Elmas will be showing a forwarder and a large harvester at the new forestry fair Forest Romania in Zizin. “We will be demonstrating the machines in operation at the fair” Radu says. “We will really have the chance to prove what a harvester can do when it has to battle with huge Romanian spruce trees in steep terrain.”

Stora Enso to deliver pellets to City of Joensuu and Varkauden Aluelämpö Stora Enso has signed a two-year pellet delivery agreement with both the City of Joensuu and Varkauden Aluelämpö, a district heating company. The agreement with Joensuu covers the delivery of pellets to five separate locations. The deliveries

have already begun. The agreement also includes the option to extend the contract for two years. In early 2015, Varkauden Aluelämpö decided to convert two of its power plant’s oil boilers for pellet combustion. Varkauden Aluelämpö also views the project

as an important step forward for Finnish suppliers that will help them to meet tightening environmental demands in a costefficient manner. Construction is ongoing and Stora Enso’s pellet deliveries will take off in autumn 2015.

Microtec’s Ligna showcase At Ligna many customers and visitors were highly interested in Goldeneye Multi-Sensor Scanners for different applications. One of the big novelties, was the Multi-Sensor Quality Scanner, Goldeneye 600, for rip optimization of large boards or defect repairing of panels. Together with the Speedfiller Visco from Fill, Goldeneye 600 represents a repair unit for plywood surfaces. The scanner detects all surface defects that are reported to the repair units. Repair speed is 500 panels per hour with eight defects per panel. For the application of defect repair solution for wood panels Goldeneye detects the defect very accurately and the defect is filled right where it needs to be repaired, also providing significant savings on putty consumption. For the rip optimization the Goldeneye 600 scanner virtually saws the wide board into new smaller boards and optimizes the new boards separately. This feature allows comparison of the highest value single board rip solution in order to optimize for the highest overall quality and value.

Also Goldeneye 900 was one of the highlights of this show. This is the Multi-Sensor Quality Scanner featuring color cameras, laser scattering, grain deviation and 3D dimension scanning in transversal feeding. The Goldeneye 900 series provides – according to the customer’s requests – full 3D lumber profile scanning, full HD color image processing, polarizing scatter processing. The application fields can be both for planed and rough lumber, for the optimization process of a trimming & sorting line of green, dry or planer mills. The value optimization software implements customer specific grading, trimming and sorting rules. Geometric, visual as well as X-ray Multi-Sensor cameras and sensors determine the true value of lumber, including their inner properties such as knots, cracks, discoloration, pitch pockets, pith, bark, wane, and other dimensional defects.

Wintersteiger showcases innovations at LIGNA

As a comprehensive supplier of machines and saw blades the thincutting specialist Wintersteiger AG is introducing an innovation to the market in both areas. At LIGNA in Hannover, Germany, the special-purpose machine builder from Austria presented the new DSB Compact 310 thin-cutting band saw and the Banso X-Cut band-saw blade. The entry-level model for precision thin cutting of wood. Wintersteiger is opening up new possibilities with the DSB Compact 310 single-module thincutting band saw. The machine was developed as an entry-level model for the precise thin-cutting of wood. Adapted exactly to

customer requirements, it cuts wooden blocks with a width up to 310 mm and with a kerf starting at 1.1 mm – with an excellent price/ performance ratio. The new thin-cutting band saw brings many innovations. A newly-developed conveyor belt feed system which is built on a solid-cast substructure transports wooden blocks at speeds between 1 and 16 m/min., depending on the type of wood and block preparation. At those speeds, the machine achieves a cutting precision of +/- 0.2 mm. In addition, the automatic, continuous cleaning of the conveyor belt ensures a clean transportation surface and thus precision for both

dry and wet cutting. The smooth saw blade entry is also a new development: upon entry into the wood, the speed is reduced and subsequently raised back up again. This is smooth on the saw blade. As on all Wintersteiger thin-cutting band saws, a high-tech carbon pressure guide system ensures exact blade guidance. The machine is ergonomic and easy to maintain – the extra housing around the saw unit inside the machine reduces cleaning effort. Additionally, customers can choose from a variety of optional features. The innovative spraying

system for wet cutting cools and lubricates the saw blade, resulting in a longer service life. Also new is the ability to spray with water, which can be used besides woodcompatible spraying agents for certain types of wet wood. Rollertable extensions for the in-feed and out-feed ensure a sturdy block support. The construction of the DSB Compact 310 thin-cutting band saw makes it possible to easily position multiple machines in-line. The customer remains flexible: when demand rises, the capacity can also be raised with additional machines added in-line.

New: Banso X-Cut – band saw blades for mobile sawmills. Weyerhaeuser 1Q net earnings down 51% Weyerhaeuser Company reported 1Q net earnings to common shareholders of $90 million, or 17 cents per diluted share, on net sales of $1.7 billion. This compares with net earnings of $183 million, or 31 cents per diluted share, on net sales from continuing operations of $1.7 billion for the same period last year. Excluding after-tax charges of

$9 million for special items, the company reported net earnings of $99 million, or 19 cents per diluted share for the 1Q. This compares with net earnings from continuing operations before special items of $143 million for the same period last year and $145 million for 4Q 2014. “We are pleased with our first quarter performance in

Soderhamn Eriksson to supply sawmill equipment for Tropik Wood Tropik Wood, one of Fiji’s largest industries, has ordered sawmill equipment from Söderhamn Eriksson. The order includes log decks, a Cambio 800 debarking line, a reducer bandsaw with optimized log infeed, a ChipCanter as well as a secondary-breakdown saw with

setting saws; electrical and control systems comprising 3D scanning and optimizing equipment; and a Catech 400 TS-7 edging line with a triple-saw edger. Tropik Wood produces lumber from Caribean pine plantations and also has a chipping plant for logs. Tropik Wood processes some

80-100,000 cubic metres per year in one shift operation. One of the order’s objectives is to increase value recovery. Delivery is scheduled for the fall and installation start for the turn of the year.

US pumps out more pellets Wood pellet exports from the US increased for the 12th consecutive quarter in the fourth quarter of 2014, as compared to Canadian exports which trended downward in 2014, according to the North American Wood Fiber Review

xportation of wood pellets from North America to Europe and Asia reached an all-time high rising 22% in 2014 from the previous year, according to the North American Wood Fiber Review (NAWFR). Shipments from the US were up 40% year-over-year, while Canada exported 6% less in 2014 than in 2013.

US exports to Europe increased for the twelfth consecutive quarter, reaching a new high of just over 1.1Mt in the December quarter last year. Minor volumes of pellets to Asia, shipped by containers from the US West Coast, fell as manufacturers concentrated on seasonal local demand. By far the largest consumer of

US pellets that past year has been the United Kingdom, which in the last quarter was the destination of 73% of US export volumes. However, the UK market has not always been in such a dominant position. In 2013, the share was 55% and in 2012 only a modest 31%. With over 20 new exportoriented pellet plants being built or having credible plans to operate in the next two years in the Southern States, further significant growth in North American pellet exports can be expected. British Columbia’s overseas pellet exports in the last quarter last year fell by 15% from the previous quarter. While exports to Europe rose, shipments to Asia were substantially lower than in the third quarter of 2014. The slowdown from a labour dispute

at the port of Vancouver, together with rail transportation challenges in the Interior of BC, contributed to the reduced export activities during the quarter. The major destinations for Canadian pellets in 2014 were in ranking order, the United Kingdom, the US, Italy and South Korea. Total export volumes from both Western and Eastern Canada trended downward for most of 2014 and in the fourth quarter last year reached their lowest levels since mid-2012. Notwithstanding the 4Q/14 slump in BC pellet shipments to Asia, pellet exports from Western Canada will likely continue to flow steadily until new production capacity is added in late 2015. The potential for increased pellet exports to Japan and South Korea remains strong, though specific agreements have yet to materialize.

Softwood exports to Columbia assessed A Southern Pine Council study of the Colombian market for U.S. softwood exports concludes that the market represents the perfect storm of declining domestic supplies, raising wood consumption, reduced tariffs brought by the U.S.-Colombia Free Trade Agreement, and preferences for Southern Pine. The study, funded by grants from the USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS), involved a number of interviews of Colombian importers and trade groups to evaluate the U.S. industry’s competitiveness in the market, opportunities for growth, and what promotional work would help grow the market. The Columbian market readily accepts U.S. lumber grades and sizes and is in the very early development stage, with few codified regulations on wood in construction or sizes, grades, and country-of-origin for lumber usage. Wood industry and construction groups are working to change that, and urging that now is the time to influence such policy. In addition, Southern Pine is preferred for its availability in long lengths and wide dimensions, as well as its distinctive grain pattern and density. Importers and specifiers are keenly interested in partnering with the Southern Pine Council to help raise demand for Southern Pine and help them better understand U.S. materials. They indicate an immediate need for technical assistance to teach builders how to specify U.S. material, building techniques, its grades and sizes, plus advantages over competing materials from Chile. The Southern Pine Council plans to begin addressing these needs this Fall.

ocated in Milan, New Hampshire, Milan Lumber Company provides lumber to wholesalers like Hancock Lumber and Hammond Lumber as well as to crate and pallet makers. “We also sell to private labels like Gerbing, which sells to Home Depot,” said Steve Halle, the Mill Manager. The mill also boasts an extensive log yard. “With 12 million bdft in this yard [at the mill], we have enough for three months,” Halle said. “We also have half-adozen concentration yards besides this yard.” “We procure from Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York, and a little bit out of

Massachusetts. There’s no money for wheelers [10-wheel log trucks] to travel 100 miles to here, so your procurement area becomes much larger for those local people with the concentration yards.” “We have two planer mills: No.1 runs 1,000-1,100 bdft/m; No.2 runs about 500 feet per minute,” said Halle. “Planer mill No.2 is more for the value-added 3X4 and 4X4 boards. Planer mill No.1 is more for dimensional cuts: 2X3 up to 2X10; and for big runs and value-added products.” “In the sawmill we do quite a lot of custom orders like 3X4 up to 4X10. We’re a dimension mill but we do a fair amount of custom work.” The mill has found a worthwhile use for some of their refuse as well. “We burn our planer mill shavings in our Co-Byrne boiler to create steam to heat our buildings and four dry kilns,” Halle pointed out. “We don’t use fossil

fuels of any kind. We were selling all our shavings to farmers. Now we burn what we need and sell the balance.”

A Tale of two species “We separate our two species here because there’s quite a difference between drying eastern spruce and balsam fir, from 140-160 hours on fir to only 30-40 hours on spruce,” Halle explained. “We saw both species together in the sawmill and we separate them through a Sap-Tech system where a liquid is sprayed on the end of the

wood, then an ultraviolet camera separates the species.” “We shoot for 19% or less moisture with 15% being optimal,” he continued. “We use a Wagner Meters handheld to check the wood, we have the paddle sensors to check bundles and we have some sensors in the kilns, which have been really good for us.”

Timken spherical roller bearing solid-block housed units cut maintenance and costs for the timber industry

S

weden-based Derome Timber experienced challenges keeping its chain conveyor up and running. The cast iron housed units it used were lasting only three-to-four months before heavy shock loads, dirt and debris damaged the bearings inside. Then, Derome switched to Timken spherical roller bearing solid block housed units. Under the same demanding conditions, these units provided more than two years of uninterrupted service. With a six-fold increase in bearing life and a drastic reduction in downtime and maintenance costs, Derome has taken the decision to gradually convert all its housed units to the Timken brand. The timber industry places tough demands on bearing housings. With industrial operations in challenging, highly contaminated environments, housed unit bearings must be robust enough to provide top

Customised seals Choose triple lip seals in Nitrile or Urethane for low speed wet or harsh environments, and a Teflon labyrinth seal is available for high speed applications or when dealing with high temperatures. Every bearing will accept a secondary cover, available in open or closed configuration, which bolts to the housing achieving three barriers to each side of the bearing. All units specified with the Teflon labyrinth seal are

supplied with a pressure relief valve designed to prevent overlubrication.

Easy mounting There are several different locking styles to choose from: single and double collar set screw lock, eccentric lock, sealed tapered adapter or a V lock design, which helps prevent over tightening and allows for quick installation. Each unit has a nut that thread into each side of the housing allowing for quick change from fixed to floating in either direction.

Success at sawmills throughout Europe While Timken solid block spherical roller bearing units are relatively new to the European market, they have already proven their value at various sawmills: • A n end user was having issues with split-block bearings on their chipper, which required them to

replace the bearings 10 times a year. The chipper was running as high as 4,600 rpm at times and causing the bearings to fail. The machine operator started using Timken solid block bearings and has extended the life by four-tofive times • A Romanian manufacturer of laminate floor products and wall panels used conventional housed units in a panel press. Due to heavy contamination and high axial loads, bearings had to be replaced every two-to-three months. Thanks to an authorised distributor’s recommendation, the manufacturer began using Timken solid-block housed units, which now have been running for more than a year. The manufacturer plans to install Timken units in its press roller conveyors as well • I n a debarking plant of a Swedish hygiene paper manufacturer, bearing units typically failed

every three-to-six months. The manufacturer converted to Timken solid-block steel housed units and reduced downtime. The Timken bearings now have been in service more than one year

Primultini from Marano Vicentino, a renowned company with a rich catalog of sawmill solutions, has acquired the Bongioanni brand, a business in the same industry, part of Pezzolato spa since 2001. According to the agreement, Bongioanni’s machinery production will be moved from Pianfei (Cuneo) to Marano, while the service for thousands of machines installed all over the world will still be managed by the engineers of the Piedmont-based group

Norwood flew in a number of its portable sawmill experts from three continents: North America, Africa and Europe. In addition to its wood chipper and firewood machine range, Pezzolato produces a wide range of mobile and static sawmill machines. For more than 25 years,

Pezzolato has built mobile horizontal band sawmills. In the beginning, Pezzolato just delivered components (headrigs) for Tom Sawyer sawmills. From 1991, the company produced and distributed complete mobile and static band sawmills (MINI-PROFI, MAXI-PROFI and SUPER-PROFI) worldwide. In contrast to many other producers of mobile sawmills, Pezzolato was built on a basis of industrial sawmill technology. Also, the bandwheel technology of the mobile horizontal sawmills was adapted from industrial machines. Every machine was equipped with hydraulic log grips, hydraulic logturner, hydraulic squaring arms and hydraulic log loader. The log not only lies on the bed, it is tightly gripped during the complete cutting process, to achieve the highest precision and lowest tolerances. The blade and bandwheel technology consists of professional crowned bandwheels and benched (straightened and tensioned) sawblades. “This guarantees the highest technical standard in this mobile saw market,” Pezzolato. “Many mobile saws, you find today in the market, have only recently reached this standard (see figure 1 and figure 2). “Pezzolato machines are strong, durable and designed for easy operation and simple maintenance, to obtain optimal working cycles

But also this includes smaller machines (Timber Queen series), which are equipped with hydraulic log manipulation tools and 54 mm bi-metal technology sawblades. “To always to be a cut above the competitors.” For pallet board production, Pezzolato combined the headrigs from Timber Queen machines with integrated conveyors for pallet lines. In this case, the bi-metal blade technology shows the real advantage in high precision, fast speed, long working intervals and low maintenance times. The inclined headrig was first built by

Resch & 3 recently delivered what may be the largest mobile bandsaw – a special version of the mobile bandsaw DM 1200 PROFI into France. Logs up to 1.5 m diameter and 11 m length can be effortlessly cut, while a special chassis with a transport speed of up to 80 km/h means working over longer distances isn’t a problem. “The biggest challenge was the entirety of mechanisation, as log infeed chains and plank outfeed chains can be hydraulically folded quickly,” Resch & 3 stated. “Eighty different cylinders are controlled from the cab. “Together with the band saw, we also supplied the double edger DB 90. Air-conditioned cabin: working safely and comfortably. The travelling cab lets the operator work in a pleasant, low-noise, dust-free environment. The entire system can be operated from the cab using two proportional-control joysticks and a display screen. A direct view of the sawn timber also ensures constant quality control. The cutting height setting can be adjusted easily for the desired sort of sawn timber by using the display screen with several predefined cutting programs. This facilitates optimum log utilisation. Hydraulic sawblade pressure guide system: precise guidance. Hydraulic pressure guides give the saw blade extra support and reliable guidance. They are retracted during reverse travel to avoid heating the saw blade. As a result, precise cutting is possible even at elevated feed rates. Each guide can be positioned

individually to be as close as possible to the log. Double precutter: longer cutting life. Two precutters guarantee a clean entrance and exit faces for the saw blade. This dramatically increases the maintenance interval for the saw teeth. The two precutters can be controlled individually. Automatic crosscutter: Everything in a single step. During cutting, each plank can be trimmed automatically to the desired length. Finished lengths of longer timber can thus be taken directly from the mill. The hydraulically actuated crosscut saw can optionally be rotated by 90° so it can be used as a ripping saw. Particularly with hardwood, this can be used to part the heartwood or edge one side. SERRA SERRA In its 25th anniversary year, presented two new novelties at Ligna. The first multihead with wide bandsawblade technology, MK402 and the new dry sharpener technology with a sharpening quality of a wet sharpener, the new Shark 200. The new Multihead can be equipped with up to 5 sawheads and it has been developed as a resaw to be installed behind the main saw, replacing the circular saw technology. The big cutting width of 40 cm and the minimum kerf of 2 mm additional to the minimum required power and its low price makes out of this machine an alternative to the conventional systems. A big appreciation was made of its module system (Expandable) and its great feeding system. “Our customers from Mexico, Peru, Colombia and Dänemark were really impressed with the quality of this machine” indicates Roberto Lautenschlager the international sales manager for South America and Asia “We have sold at Ligna 3 machines, because it’s the first Multihead with a 80 mm sawblade width”. One customer that already has 3 multiheads from 3 different manufacturers was impressed with the quality of the MK402 “According to his experience the customer said, this is the best worldwide multihead available in the market” Reports Mr. Lautenschlager. With the new sharpener Shark 200 SERRA presented a total new concept as a dry sharpener. A big grinder wheel with 300 mm diameter and a fixed installed diamond tipped grinder wheel profiler grants the operator a perfect sharpening. It includes an extraction system (Vacuum) and its operation is very simple,

making out of this sharpener an unique technology. “In the sharpening market world wide there has been no innovation in the last couple of years. The interest in this alternative to the wet sharpener with excellent” says Fritz. In the complete sawmilling branch this new sharpener has had lots of request and this is because of its excellent sharpening results and its easy operation. But also bandsawblades manufacturers are interested in this technology because of the price and its excellent quality. Also owners of vertical bandsaws are interested in acquiring this new sharpener. The company has also specialized in stationary industrial sawmilling plants. “World wide the demand into bigger stationary industrial sawmilling has been increasing” says Fritz. “Our internationally well known sawmill, Africa XE160 for logs with diameter of up to 160 cm has been developed for this kind of industrial sawmilling plants. In Liberia after the Ebola virus, the UN is using this model for assisting and helping the country. In 75 countries world wide there are SERRA sawmills working as

mobile, stationary and as industrial sawmilling plants and the company has obviously launched the new MK402 at the right time. “70% of our sawmills are in foreign countries and from those 70% are working in industrial sawmilling plants” says the general manager. A big satisfaction in this Bavarian company is because of the international trust that customers

have developed in the continuous innovation of the products. “The market has big trust in our quality, one month after the new sharpener shark 200 was developed, we have sold already 30 units and some of them were even sold before the sharpener was developed” resulting in a jubilant sales department.

Another step forward Power and comfort are again at the head of the priority list for contractors, as reflected by the developments boasted in International Forest Industries’ Forwarder Technology feature this year, though there is also a nod toward a potential shift in focus from some suppliers

B

igger is still better, according to contributors to this year’s review of forwarder technology. As in the previous two years, suppliers have indicated that a return to form in many markets around the world has led to greater demand for high capacity machines. Most manufacturers have delivered larger models and, in some cases, faster models too.

The challenge has been delivering these improved technologies while both complying with evermore rigorous emissions standards across North America and Europe in particular, and not only maintaining operator comfort but improving the overall experience and productivity for the forest professional behind the controls. The level of success in this regard is

remarkable. An emerging trend this year has been a focus on communication systems. This is not to say that communication technology has previously been ignored, but merely that it has been restricted in its coverage. For the first time there is a clear message that communication between forwarder, harvester, and client is the way of the future.

Komatsu Forest’s updated series of forwarders has met huge interest from customers, according to the manufacturer. In 2014, Komatsu sold the highest number of forwarders in the important Swedish home market for the first time in many years and continues to lead that market today. The Komatsu forwarder series includes the Komatsu 835, Komatsu 845, Komatsu 855, Komatsu 865 and Komatsu 895. “High load capacity and fast transport speed are key characteristics of the highly productive Komatsu forwarders,” the manufacturer said. “An ergonomic operator environment with a large cab that enables operators to perform at their best throughout each shift, good fuel economy and high reliability are other characteristics that make the forwarders productive.”

All Komatsu forwarders have a spacious cab that provides the operator with a high-performance. No expense has been spared on the cab’s interior. Among other things, it features what is claimed to be “the market’s most ergonomic driver’s seat”; a smart radio with Bluetooth and hands free functionality for cell phone connectivity; ergonomic hand controls; and Komatsu Comfort Controls, with added functionality at the finger tips. Another feature on all forwarders is Komatsu Comfort Ride cab suspension, which effectively reduces knocks and jolts and ensures productive cab comfort for the operator even after many hours at the controls. All engines in Komatsu forwarders comply with tough environmental requirements of EU Stage IV/EPA Tier 4 Final. The brain in all Komatsu forwarders is the control system MaxiXplorer 3.1, which is a fully integrated machine control and reporting system that communicates with the operator in a user-friendly manner. This involves, for example, providing the operator with functions for controlling the engine, transmission, and crane, thereby maximising the forwarders’ productivity. The forwarders have flexible loading space. One example is FlexGate, which moves up and down if the crane strikes it. The bunk can also be fitted with the FlexBunk option, which provides hydraulic height-adjustable supports. ProTec link, internal hose routing that protects hosing and hydraulics, is standard on all Komatsu forwarders. The range of units means Komatsu is able to supply solutions across the business spectrum. “When it comes to different models, the 835 is nimble and kind

to the environment,” Komatsu said. “It has high torque (750 Nm at 1,200-1,500 rpm) and great traction (15,908 kP or 156 kN)) in relation to its total weight. Combined with a powerful engine (127 kW DIN or 170 HP at 1,900 rpm) and high load capacity, the Komatsu 835 can handle any thinning assignment effectively.” The 835 is a low emissions forwarder with low forest impact, sparing standing trees and the forest floor when thinning. It has an 11 t load capacity and the bunk offers flexibility. The next size up is the Komatsu 845 forwarder, which meets the toughest demands expected of smaller forwarders. The 845 has a split frame design with a selfbearing axle and a new frame-axle interface. Together with the 673 mm (26.5 in) wheels, ground clearance is high and ground pressure is low. A hydrostatic transmission system optimises power use (16,927 kP or 166 kN). The system rapidly adapts when the load changes depending on the terrain, obstacles, inclines, and crane loads. The Komatsu 845 has a fourcylinder 4.9 litre engine with high torque at low engine speeds (830 Nm at 1,200-1,500 rpm). The crane on has a long reach, up to 10 m (33 ft), and a combi outer boom. Two forwarders – Komatsu 855.1 and Komatsu 865 – are ideal for everything from thinning to final felling. The 855.1 and 865 have a load capacity of 13 t and 14 t respectively. Both forwarders are equipped with engines that not only have high power (855.1: 150 kW DIN or 204 HP; 865: 158 kW DIN or 212 HP, at 1,500-1,900 rpm) and good working characteristics, but also exceptional combustion efficiency, which results in low fuel consumption. that adapts itself to the load, slope and obstacles. Both the 855.1 and 865 are equipped with the bogie solution, Komatsu Comfort Bogie, which facilitates mobility through high ground clearance and stability. The biggest unit is Komatsu’s 895 – a 19 t forwarder. “The entire construction is for heavy-duty usage and its performance is higher in every area,” Komatsu stated. One example is the chassis design and power train. The hightensile steel of the underside of the rear frame, and the bogie’s portal design provide ground clearance. The modular frame design enables the forwarder to be delivered with four different frame lengths to suit different market needs. The engine delivers high performance (193 kW DIN or 259 hp at 1,700 rpm) with good handling characteristics combined with effective combustion for low fuel consumption. The wheels are 724 mm (28.5 in) which is at the top end of forwarder wheel sizes currently in the market. The larger diameter reduces the risk of the rims spinning inside the tyres, which is important for transferring the high traction to the ground. The 895 also has a crane that delivers higher lifting and slewing torque. The Komatsu 895 is incredibly powerful with 26,000 kp or 255 kN of tractive effort and 165.2 kNm of gross lifting torque for the crane. “This makes it a giant among comparable forwarders.”

Swedish manufacturer Rottne is gearing-up for increased market share with several new features for its forwarder program, which covers all operator needs across its comprehensive range – from the F10B to the F18D. “Today stability and robustness are common characteristics for all Rottne forwarders,” Jan Hennberg, Head of Exports at Rottne, told IFI. “Product development is ongoing and with the latest technology, we meet tomorrow’s demands for increased productivity and profitability. The D-version includes several new upgrading’s and developments that makes Rottne forwarders even more compatible.”

New diesel engine D-version forwarders now have a new diesel engine with the latest cleaning technology that comfortably conforms to the requirements for emission control in accordance with Final Tier 4. The new FT4 engine features EGR technology, particle filter (DPF) and SCR system with AdBlue (DEF). It is a powerful, silent engine with a good response low vibrations and excellent fuel economy.

The bigger forwarders can be equipped with a widened load area, ‘Wide Load’ or with ‘Wide Load XL’. Wide Load involves a width adjustable load area with mechanically width adjusted load bunks and hydraulically width adjustable gate. Wide Load XL has a variable load area with hydraulic stakes and hydraulically width adjustable gate. “These options give better balance on the forwarder as the load is distributed across the width instead of height,” Hennberg explained.

Cooling system The cooling system’s fan is powered by a hydraulic motor, which is temperature controlled and therefore not depending on the engine speed. The fan is reversing automatically at regular intervals to blow out the cooler.

Hydraulic crane tilt function Hydraulic tilt plate for the crane tower is an extra piece of equipment that provides “significant advantages” when log-hauling on steep terrain. The tilt function – 5˚ forward/28˚ backwards – means that the crane’s net swing force can be maintained

when the forwarder works on inclines up to 30˚ (See IFI’s Steep Slope Logging feature pp.52-69).

Forwarder computer for good follow-up “The communication between forwarder, harvester and clients is becoming increasingly important in order for work in the forest to become rational and productive,” Hennberg said. “Information about daily production and timber positions will soon be a part of all operators’ everyday lives.” The forwarder computer and GPS/Geo Info equipment are an option that simplifies reporting and provides accurate follow-up. This equipment also enables information such as production files and maps with working routes to be automatically transferred from the harvester to the forwarder to ensure that all felled timber is collected. The crane scaling system at the tip of the crane provides all the information needed regarding the weight and assortments loaded on the wagon.

TPMS is an integrated monitoring system for tyre pressure, available for all Rottne forestry machines. Automatic and direct indication of pressure loss in one or more tyres is flagged up when the problem occurs, appearing as a warning in the display. The display is found in the cab and provides information on current air pressure from the pressure sensors through wireless transmission. This allows the operator to take immediate action as problems with tyre pressure occur and negates the time consuming task of manual pressure checks.


FORWARDERS

Tigercat competes in three forwarder classes: the 1055B is a 14 t capacity machine; the 1075B is a 20 t forwarder; and the new 1085B is rated to carry a 25 t load. To address the needs of the European and North American markets, Tigercat will be releasing the C-series forwarders in 2015. The C-series forwarders are powered by the Tigercat FPT N67 Tier 4f engine with an output of 230 kW at 2,000 rpm. The Mercedes Tier 3 powered 1055B, 1075B and 1085B will continue to be available in all other markets. With 170 kW (228 hp), the heavy duty 1055 series is designed to excel in both selective and final felling applications. “Offering up to 10 m of crane reach, extendable bunk options and a choice of two wagon frames, the 1055B is highly configurable and an excellent all-around forwarder,” Tigercat stated. 1075B series is designed for long distance forwarding, steep

slopes, scarifying and other extreme duty applications. With heavy duty wide spread bogies, the 1075B excels in tough terrain and slopes and operates with minimal soil disturbance. Optional extendable bunks improve productivity by increasing payload in applications where the wood is relatively light in weight and load area is the constraining factor. The latest addition to the Tigercat forwarder range is the 25 t capacity 1085 series. The 1085B excels in “severe duty” applications such as long distance forwarding and is especially well matched to steep slopes. The 1085B is equipped with the extreme duty Tigercat engineered and manufactured ROB17 bogies and Tigercat’s unique WideRange transmission. The Tigercat ROB17 bogie is well proven in severe duty sixwheel drive skidder applications. The Tigercat driveline provides load capacity and tractive effort that is “literally unmatched in

the industry”, according to the manufacturer. WideRange provides sufficient tractive effort to carry 20 t loads up 60% slopes and achieves a maximum working speed of 7 km/h. This simple and reliable transmission does not have a roading gear and thus the 1085 series forwarders are not for everyone. However the machine can attack and manoeuvre steep slopes under load “like no other” machine.

The new hooked crane profile and low-wide In 2014 Tigercat released the F195T85 crane, capable of lifting 20-30% heavier loads at the same reach compared with many other forwarder crane on the market. In addition, the crane boasted 2266% more slew torque. The F195T85 is the only crane with standard end-of-position dampening sensors on the stick boom and slew bearing to prevent impact loads. bearing in the slew base is designed to last the life of the machine, a vast improvement over the plain bearing and spherical rollers used in other cranes. In addition, the telescopic cylinder is cushioned. It is also the only crane with swivels on the pillar hoses for extended hose life with

thick walled bushings used at all pivots. Tigercat has continued to innovate, bringing out the second generation F195T85 hooked crane in 2015. The new crane profile is designed to increase the working envelope of the crane for reduced machine travel and improved productivity. But where the crane really shines is when used in combination with Tigercat’s new low-wide extendable bunk system with a maximum area of 7.5 m2. The low-wide bunks are angled to reduce

overall gate height and eliminate the need for a vertically sliding gate. In combination with the hooked crane, the low-wide bunk system significantly reduces the chance of contact with the gate or bunk stakes. Operator visibility and ergonomics are enhanced. The operator enjoys a clear sightline to the top of the load, increasing log placement accuracy and decreasing cycle times. Operator control

John Deere 1210 makes boom operation accurate, fast and easy. By eliminating extra movements, this system also increases the durability of boom structures and hydraulic cylinders. These features significantly improve an operator’s working speed, resulting in higher overall productivity and lower costs. One of the most important benefit of the IBC system is how easily and quickly the operator’s capacity can be improved via crane tip control. A forwarder

operator’s workday consists largely of crane work – lifting logs from the ground and up onto the load bed and then unloading them at the roadside. It takes a long time to become a skilled operator and be able to operate the controls in the most efficient way. But many forwarder operators then move on to operating harvesters, where the demands are even higher, and so then new forwarder operators have to be trained up.

Ponsse’s product range has never seen changes as drastic as it has in recent years, according to Ponsse Communications Manager Katja Paananen. “In fast-paced product development, everything is based on hard work where long-term investments and customer cooperation bear fruit,” she said. The new Ponsse Model Series 2015 focuses on improving durability, serviceability and ergonomics, producing significant results in terms of usability and productivity. The starting point for the

development of the model series was the idea of a forest machine that does not compromise on the usability, productivity or serviceability of the machine. The new engine technology and the improved hydraulics have enabled service intervals to be extended from 600-1,200 hours to 900-1,800 hours. Under the new Model Series 2015, the Ponsse ActiveFrame forwarder was introduced. It is a whole new suspension system for the cabins of eight-wheelers. It has a simple and functional structure, cancelling out any sideways movement directed at the operator “effectively and unnoticeably”. The cabin suspension system helps the operator keep going even after a long shift. Comfort in driving allows the operator to use higher speeds, particularly when driving an empty load, and working with the loader is more efficient as the system keeps the cabin horizontal even in rough terrain. The ActiveFrame solution

The cabin, visibility, ergonomic controls, ease of maintenance and use, together with machine stability and control, are crucial factors when it comes to comfort. “Regardless of machine intelligence and advanced technology, quality and production are always based on the operator,” Paananen said In recent years, machine stability has increased its role, as planted forests are located on steep slopes in many market

areas. Thanks to its stability, eightwheeled forest machines allow harvesting on ever steeper slopes and more uneven terrain. On the steepest slopes, winch solutions are also used both in harvesters and forwarders, particularly in South America and Central Europe. Ponsse’s forwarder family covers all size categories, starting from the 10 t Gazelle to the 20 t Elephant-King, with a tractive force of 24 t that ensures efficient short-distance hauling, especially on slope sites and long transport distances. While ElephantKing is designed for extremely challenging conditions and heavy loads, the

A growing need for steep slope technology has prompted a varied but comprehensive response from suppliers

roviding alternatives for harvesting in extreme locations has become big business in recent years. This has largely been seen in the technology applications designed for boggy or softer grounds that are emerging as a result of warmer climates globally. But it is also a growing trend for steeper slopes, as the demand for roundwood picks up once again and stands in less easily logged areas become

economic at higher prices. There has of course been a longstanding tradition of logging on steep slopes as seen particularly in parts of North America and Western Europe. The increase in demand has prompted suppliers to devote greater research and development resources to solving the challenges of this particular application. How these companies market themselves differs.

Konrad Forsttechnik, meanwhile, has provided a window into the world of cable logging – a practise International Forest Industries hopes to look at in more detail later this year.

Tigercat is at the forefront of steep slope harvesting technology mainly because field staff and engineering teams dedicate a great deal of time to field research on steep slope operations, according to the North American powerhouse. “On one hand, the contractors are looking for advice and solutions but conversely, we are also learning from the contractors and keeping the feedback loop going so that end user ideas and requirements are reflected in future machines and systems,” Glen Marley, Factory Sales Representative for Tigercat Australasia and Southeast Asia, said. “The process allows for constant evolution and

improvement. “The main ingredient to making a leveller stable and effective on steep terrain is the balance of the machine. Due to the unique geometry of our levelling system, the weight is equally balanced straight down the centreline of the swing bearing. Regardless of the angle of the undercarriage in relation to the upper, we keep our track pressure even all the way along the bottom of the tracks as long as the upper is close to horizontal. This makes the machine feel very stable and predictable.” Tigercat Operator Trainer and Field Representative Gary MacDonald added: “The low centre of gravity of our levelling structure and undercarriage and weight of the structures also adds to our stability and durability.” In addition, the ramped undercarriage (where both the front idler and the rear gearbox is set higher than the centreline of the undercarriage) allows the machines to easily drive up over rocks and stumps. The 855, 860 and 870 series carriers are all equipped with the twin swing drive system for high swing torque and have excellent main boom lift force, allowing

the machines to maintain high production levels on steep slopes. Of course there are always tradeoffs. The nimble zero tail-swing L830C track feller buncher has more levelling capability (26° forward) but of course lacks the swing power and lift of the larger, full tail-swing machines. However, International Factory Sales Representative, Gary Olsen, was quick to point out that the L830C is not a small machine. “Customers often ask for a smaller and lighter levelling machine to increase performance even further on steep slopes but after many years and millions of hours of machine operation,

Tigercat engineering feels strongly that a certain critical mass is required to provide sufficient downward forces to make strong contact with the ground,” he said. “The heavier undercarriage keeps the machine positioned on the slope. This allows the machines to operate on steep slopes while handling a range of tree sizes with a high degree of authority.” MacDonald noted that the attachments are matched to carriers with careful consideration of the weight and size of the attachment so that the balance is retained on slopes. “Tigercat has developed fixed and dangle-type bar saw heads that allow operators to fell while going down slopes and cut larger trees than what would be possible with a disc saw,” he said. “The directional felling saw also has the ability to double cut trees without repositioning the carrier. With the right attachment, the machines can cut down in draws and ravines without having to drive into the ravine. And the customer is getting a full package developed under one roof.” In addition to design specifics of the machines, it is also important to step back and look at the big picture – how to improve the overall system. There is an ongoing collaboration between Tigercat and innovative end users. Over time, the results of these collaborations have blurred the lines between traditional fulltree and CTL systems to create new combinations of machines that improve productivity and reduce the industry’s reliance on expensive, labour-intensive yarding systems, along with the requirement for hand fallers and chokers on the ground in the most

Mark Blackberry from Sunchip Group established the concept in Australia of using felling and shovelling machines to replace the traditional cable operations in the Snowy Mountains and Oberon regions. In Oberon for example, Sunchip uses an LS855C shovel logger fitted with the Tigercat 5195 directional felling saw for felling and shoveling 1.2-1.8 m³ Radiata pine. The machine works its way uphill, laying the trees perpendicular across the slope in a row. The HTH624C equipped Tigercat LH855C processes the trees

which are then extracted with a conventional forwarder. Once the slope, terrain or moisture levels become too challenging for the forwarder, the LS855C will shovel the trees either up or down the slope to where the traditional ground based CTL crew can process and extract. “This felling and shovelling concept that is now getting very popular in New Zealand isn’t really that new but the reliability, safety and productivity of the Tigercats on steep slopes leave the other brands for dead,” Blackberry said. “The modified ground based cut-to-length system is more

expensive than a simple cut-tolength operation, but is cheaper and safer to run than the cable operations that were used in the past.” As contractors continue to push the boundaries in the steep slope arena, Tigercat is currently collaborating with a select few New Zealand customers and local New Zealand suppliers as well as contractors in western North America with cable assist systems. This so called tethered logging is in large part an attempt to remove hand fallers from the ground by tethering levelling track feller bunchers to some form of anchor

machine at the top of the slope. The potential exists both to improve operations on slopes that are already mechanically felled as well as making it possible to effectively operate on even steeper slopes.

With a few adaptations, the Rottne standard machines can be an efficient partner for steep terrain, the Swedish manufacturer believes. “Rottne has several customers in Norway, South Germany, Austria and Switzerland, with

both harvesters and forwarders who appreciate the performance of Rottne when the machines are working in steep terrain,” Jan Hennberg, Head of Exports, told IFI. The two harvester models H11C and H21D can both be equipped with eight wheels. This in combination with a balanced bogie that puts a higher ground pressure on the front wheels; tracks both front and rear; as well as the well-known high tractive force on the Rottne machines, makes both H11C and H21D good climbers in the mountain areas (tractive force: H11C/167 kN and H21D/230 kN respectively). Depending on the soil conditions and the grip, machines equipped as above can climb up to 30°. If customers need to climb in steeper terrain, all Rottne machines can be equipped with a Synchronic Alpine winch. Rottne machines equipped for steep slopes can operate on gradients up to 30°

To make it more comfortable for the operator when working in steep terrain, the standard harvester cab automatically tilts 15˚ front and 14˚ back. If required, a special ‘tiltable’ chair and safety belt can be installed.

The Rottne forwarder models F10B, F13D, F15D and F18D, all with 8-wheel drive, can of course also be equipped with balanced bogie and tracks making them good climbers. Komatsu has one of the broadest and newest ranges of forest machines on the market designed for steep slope logging applications including track fellerbunchers/harvesters, wheeled harvesters, forwarders, log loaders and forestry excavators. “When it comes to cutting on steep slopes, Komatsu’s next generation XT-3 Series track fellerbunchers and harvesters are tailormade,” the manufacturer said. “By combining high lift capacity, powerful swing torque, rugged four-way cab levelling and robust Komatsu undercarriages, the XT-3 series provides significant improvements in operator comfort, ease of operation, productivity, reliability and durability.” Komatsu’s setback boom design improves machine performance on slopes by allowing the operator to cut very close to the machine to optimise full lift capacity. The zero-tail swing feature enhances the ability to manoeuver and work

in confined spaces. Komatsu’s independent hydrostatic track drive system is the “perfect” feature when working on slopes. The original ‘engine-up’ 2-cylinder four-way cab levelling design revolutionised mechanical felling on slopes, according to Komatsu. Cab levelling maximises operator comfort, increases harvesting productivity and improves machine lift and swing torque performance. The Komatsu XT-3 Series includes the XT430L-3, XT445L-3 and XT460L-3. Each model features a 300 peak hp (224kW) 8.3 litre engine. The new cab is designed from the operator’s perspective. A full length floor-to-ceiling front window, deeper side windows and a large skylight window provides excellent visibility in all terrain conditions. Both the cab and crane are on the same frame, rotating and levelling together, which provides a clear and unhindered forward view for the operator. Levelling cylinders with sensors provide continuous automatic crane and cab levelling to reduce operator fatigue when working on slopes. The other feature is the unique and well-proven concept of a rear axle stabilisation system. Combining this stabilisation system with the automatically levelling cab system makes the harvesters “extremely stable”. To optimise productivity in demanding conditions, the new harvesters also feature a new 3-pump hydraulic system, which provides unique interaction between the crane, the head functions, and the transmission. This ensures that there is always sufficient hydraulic power for the operator to perform several tasks at the same time. The 3-pump system enables the operator to use high flow rates at low engine speeds while the transmission circuit is always available to manoeuver the machine. The working hydraulics are separate from the transmission and are split into two hydraulic circuits. These working hydraulics circuits can be operated separately or together, depending on the function and flow requirements.

Forest Products Product Application Specialist for Track Feller Bunchers and Track Harvesters, told IFI. “The strong swing torque also gives the operator the ability to swing large loads uphill.” All models, configured as either feller bunchers or harvesters, have been upgraded with the new Cat PRO (parallel reach operation) system, which gives operators the ability to complete a smoother, more fluid harvesting motion. One joystick motion either extends or retracts the boom by combining both the main and stick boom functions; the other joystick can be used for minor height adjustments. For feller bunchers, in addition to the main and stick boom, the head is kept level as well. By combining these functions in one joystick, the operator can efficiently move the head in a planar, parallel motion relative to the ground. The Cat PRO system is adjustable for differing applications and varying slopes. Through a few minor adjustments, the trajectory of the boom can be modified for applications on steeper slopes. “The Cat PRO system makes operation much easier, especially for new and less experienced operators. They can learn the machine more quickly and boost their speed and productivity because of the simplified joystick movements needed to fell a tree,” Dunn said. “The simplified movements also can increase efficiency for seasoned operators and lessen operator fatigue. The system can be turned on and off easily with a button on one of the joysticks or a button on the display.” Tracks and all undercarriage rolling components are highgrade components that extend track life, cut repair costs and increase stability. The 552 Series 2 features 345 excavator-size chain for increased durability on steep slopes. Other models have 330 track chain and rolling components. All machine models are offered with the option of star carrier rollers, which help with track retention and debris shedding in uneven terrain. Both the B Series and Series 2 machines have a full 889 mm (35 in) of ground clearance from front to back. All machines have


STEEP SLOPE LOGGING excellent tractive effort to weight ratios, especially the 552 Series 2. “Strong drawbar pull, along with this ground clearance and the ‘open tunnel’ undercarriage design, makes for a highly manoeuvrable machine that easily climbs steep slopes and clears obstacles such as large stumps and rocks,” Dunn said. Both levelling models also feature a unique three cylinder levelling system, which is the only one in the industry that provides two way simultaneous function throughout the full range of motion. The design of this system reduces stress loads into the carbody and roller frames. The latest Cat wheel feller buncher line, the C Series, was also designed to handle hills. The engine is at the back of the machine providing better weight distribution and balance between the front and rear axles. “This revolutionary design gives the C Series unprecedented stability — especially compared to other wheel feller bunchers,” Matt McDonald, Caterpillar Forest Products Product Application Specialist for Wheel Feller Bunchers and Skidders, told IFI. The centre articulation joint is positioned between the front and rear axles to facilitate tyre tracking. Combined with the improved weight distribution and balance that results from the rear engine position, the agility of the C Series is a distinct advantage over other wheel feller bunchers. The cab is centred between the axles for a smooth ride. The standard air suspension seat with neck and back support and new high capacity HVAC system adds to operator comfort. A clean three-piece front windshield, large rear windows and skylight give the operator a 360˚ view, including the rear tyres. many forestry applications, including shovel logging on steep terrain. The 568 FM structure is purpose-built for duty in the woods with a wide, tall, reinforced carbody, rugged swing bearing, heavy doors and extra guarding. Track frames were extended 330 mm (13 in) to improve stability when working on steep slopes, resulting in 18% more tipping load capacity and improved load handling. The upper structure weight and stresses are distributed evenly across 10 track rollers, as compared to eight or nine track rollers on competitive machines.

“The 568 FM uses a unique cross-roller swing bearing designed for the extreme loads experienced during steep slope logging operations,” Keith Hicks, Caterpillar Forest Products Product Application Specialist, said. “A heavy duty counterweight and upper frame assembly maximise 360° lift performance for best-in-class machine balance on steep terrain.” The 568 FM can also be configured with either a 457 mm (18 in) or 1,219 mm (48 in) riser to suit operator preference for steep slope feel and comfort.

For loggers, contending with the terrain is just a fact of life. Working in the woods is inherently tough on machines and operators alike, but when the terrain gets steep, the level of difficulty is magnified, according to John Deere. In many parts of the world, logging takes place on steep, mountainous slopes. This presents a number of challenges and requires a highly skilled operator. Every move must be precise and measured, which affects operator fatigue and productivity. To help loggers meet the challenges of these unique applications, John Deere offers several machines that are specifically designed for steep terrain and soft soil. Highlights include the new eight-wheeled harvester and two tracked feller buncher models that feature a longer, wider undercarriage for maximum stability no matter the terrain.

At Elmia Wood 2013 in Sweden, John Deere made headlines with the debut of an eight-wheeled version of the 1270E IT4 Harvester. The eight-wheel drive brings the 1270E IT4 Harvester to the steepest slopes. Its unprecedented stability and climbing ability has been put to the test, proven and praised worldwide. It is a long awaited option and the majority of the 1270E IT4 harvesters are delivered with 8WD. The eight-wheel Harvester is built to meet the demands of logging in tough terrain, and the proof is in the feedback from operators who put the machines to the test in areas that represent some of the toughest logging conditions on earth due to both challenging terrain and crop conditions. Among the first to ever to test the 1270E IT4 8WD was David “Weasel” Marshall, a true professional with more than 25 years of experience as an operator. He tested the machine in the forests of Kidland Lee, a


remote forest area lying just south of the Scotland-England border in the heart of the Northumberland Cheviot hills. Known locally as the land of the far horizons, the area represents a challenge as the infamous Sitka spruce plantations are planted on a 35° slope. The magnitude of the slope meant harvesting had to be tackled downhill prior to the arrival of the 8WD machine, which allowed him to take on the slopes in an uphill direction. Marshall paid particular tribute to the stability and astonishing climbing ability of the eight-wheeler. Its eight-wheel drive provides superior traction and stability even in the most difficult of conditions. It features a large 9 litre engine and CH7 Harvester boom that performs at a level normally reserved for larger size-class harvesters. The optional eight-wheeled version delivers higher tractive force and more ground clearance, a large approach angle and strong Duraxle™ bogie axles with customized balancing gear units. These features allow the 1270E to perform well on steep slopes and other demanding terrain. The machine’s levelling and rotating cabin also provides additional operator comfort and productivity on steep terrain.

M-Series tracked feller bunchers Three years in the making and backed by over a half-century of experience in the woods, John Deere’s M-Series tracked feller bunchers officially made their debut in North America in January 2015. John Deere’s M-Series tracked feller bunchers include the 800M that set a new standard in midsize machines, along with the 900M that improves upon John Deere’s industry-leading large-size machines. Two models, the 859M and 959M, are especially well suited to meet the demands of steep slopes. To develop the M-Series tracked feller bunchers, John Deere enlisted loggers from around the world to form a Customer Advocacy Group (CAG). The CAG provided real-world insights on what they need in a machine to be successful. Inspired by their feedback and validated by thousands of hours of testing in

every day conditions, John Deere listened and responded with machines that change the game in terms of uptime and productivity in challenging conditions. For the 859M, new features offer more power, better stability and increased tractive effort. Engine power has increased significantly – by 25° for superb multifunction performance. Longer, wider undercarriage maximises stability no matter the terrain. Up to 45° more tractive effort increases capability for negotiating difficult or steep terrain, deep snow, and swamps. This machine also features a closed-loop Hydrostatic Drive to boost multifunctioning even more, particularly on slopes and in rough terrain. With this feature, operators can adjust priority between track drive and other hydraulic functions to match site conditions and their operator style or preference. The 959M maintains the improvements introduced on John Deere’s 900K-Series machines, including a 30° increase in cutting swath, from 3 - 4 m on the standard boom. A host of innovations make this machine even more productive and reliable in steep slopes, including a longer, wider undercarriage that maximises stability in all terrain conditions. A key feature that maximises productivity on the M-Series is John Deere’s Rapid Cycle System (RCS). RCS combines automated fellinghead arm cycling with simple boom control, which dramatically reduces operator fatigue while increasing efficiency and productivity. RCS can be tailored to individual skill levels and specific harvesting conditions, from large single-tree harvesting to high-speed, multisystem cutting. Multiple RCS settings can be saved according to individual operator preferences. RCS is standard on all 800M-Series machines and as an option on the 900M-Series. Another key highlight on the M-Series machines is the completely redesigned operator station that was designed by loggers for loggers. It’s roomier and more comfortable, with ergonomically designed controls. Fully adjustable armrests provide fingertip control of all machine functions, and an air-suspension seat provides exceptional daylong comfort in the climate-controlled

cab. Floor-to-celling front and side windows plus an overhead skylight provide 44° more visibility, providing an outstanding view of the cutting area. The M-Series tracked feller bunchers also feature a host of uptime increasing features. All machines feature John Deere’s field-proven boom design from

the 900M-Series models. These booms are strong and robust with thick plates and large pins and bushing to ensure long life. The new machines also include a through-nose harvester head plumbing option that routes hoses up and out of the way to extend hose life, as well as an optional undercarriage-mounted toolbox

that provides convenient storage for tools, additional saw bars and other spare parts, minimizing trips to a service truck. The 800M fuel tank capacity has been increased by 50 percent to extend intervals between fill-ups, allowing loggers to run up to 24 hours without refueling.

“One of the biggest challenges in logging today is the fact that industrial harvesting has moved to increasingly challenging terrain and conditions – to soft soil and steep slopes,” Finnish CTL harvesting institution Ponsse told IFI. “The logging companies have to consider where it is economical or even possible to log. Eightwheel harvesters can be used for harvesting wood from slopes where mechanised harvesting was previously unprofitable, even

impossible.” More than 90% of Ponsse machines are 8-wheel models that feature excellent usability on slopes and soft soil. This change has been fast – Ponsse introduced the first prototype 8w harvesters in the summer of 2009. The Ponsse harvester product family now includes 8w harvesters in all size categories. The stability and driveability of an eight-wheel machine are also important features away

from slope sites, according to the company. “An ergonomic working environment is essential for the driver’s well-being at work and therefore the productivity of the work.” As the 8w harvesters have gained more stability and traction to access more and more difficult harvesting terrains, the requirements for harvester cranes

have also grown higher. Designed especially for regeneration and sloping sites with large trees, the new Ponsse C5 telescopic crane offers about 10% more lifting power, up to 25% more slewing power, and a more robust and reliably structure.


One of the biggest differences in the productivity of various machine models come from the crane’s properties and the stability of the machine. “The agility and easeof-use of the crane and the stability provided by the eight wheels increases productivity considerably,” Ponsse stated. “The machine’s centre of gravity also remains low when operating the longer reach of the crane, driving comfort is better, and there is no need to sacrifice the power of the machine.” With the Scorpion harvester, Ponsse has developed technology

that offers significantly better levelling of the machine than many of its competing solutions. The axis point of lateral levelling is as low as possible thanks to the triple-frame structure so that the cabin and crane not only remain levelled, but also the sideways movement is minimised. This adds to the comfort of the driver, and always keeps the balance point of the crane and cabin at the machine’s centre line, improving stability. An intelligent stabilising system follows the position and load of the crane. Stabilising cylinders press the rear frame and wheels down towards the crane direction, giving support to the machine while working on its sides. Stabilising works also when driving, allowing the driver

to work when the machine is moving. A “safety logic” stops driving if the system recognises that stabilising can no longer keep the machine upright. In the most challenging logging sites, Ponsse harvesters and forwarders can be equipped with traction winches to support the wheel drive and to protect soil. The traction winch mounted on the machine´s rear frame assists the machine while logging in the steep slopes. This reduces need of skyline working on slopes, reducing harvesting costs and minimising the risks. A Herzog winch is available for both the Ergo and Bear harvesters and ElephantKing, Elephant and Buffalo forwarders. Cut-to-length Ponsse machines have been used with winch system in Brazil, China and Central Europe. “Key factors that drive product

development in the PONSSE forwarder range include power, comfort of use, environmental friendliness and the favourable ratio of net weight to load-carrying capacity,” the company stated. The powerful engine and effective loaders make Ponsse forwarders extremely productive. Dimensions that deliver the load evenly on all wheels and the smallest turning radius of their size categories minimise the load of forwarders on soil. At the same time, they have sufficient power for changing harvesting conditions and difficult terrain, such as steep slopes and deep snow. Due to its great tractive force and excellent cross-terrain performance, loads can be moved quickly and smoothly. The efficient Mercedes-Benz engine provides high tractive force and hydraulic power, which results in lower fuel consumption, a lower noise level and more comfortable loading conditions. The machine frames endure extreme loads, and they are made of high-quality components, which provide the machines with long service lives.

Konrad Forsttechnik is one of the leading cable yarder manufacturers in Austria. The company was founded 25 years ago by Josef Konrad and is based in Preitenegg, southern Austria. Starting with only a few employees, the company steadily grew to a reasonable size of about 100 people. The production of cable yarding systems started with the Carriage Woodliner, a self-driven carriage for the downhill transportation of logs. The next concept devised was a combined machine – a yarder combined with a harvester or processor – which is in production and is called the Mounty. The first Mounty 4000 was finished in 1999. Later on, the KMS, a yarder version on a trailer, was added to the production range. In the meantime, the Konrad yarding systems are a not only a proven system throughout Europe, there are also machines working successfully in South America and in Japan.

The base machine is commonly a MAN truck from 400 hp upwards. Other trucks like Mercedes or IVECO are also used. The pumps for the yarder, crane and harvester head – Woody – are driven directly from the truck engine. In the folded position, all the necessary equipment can

be loaded on the truck, so that changing the work places is simple. The crane cabin unit in the back of the truck is mounted on a three-point, which allows setting up of the tower – 13-14 m – in a vertical position. The crane is fitted on the base of the tower and is combined with the tower and the

cabin. A powerful turntable allows a rotation of almost 360°. The cabin can be fitted on either side of the tower depending on the felling side of the trees so that the operator is always safe. The Konrad crane system is a strong construction with a lifting capacity of 2.4 t and has all its hydraulic

hoses integrated into the crane. The KK1 innovative cabin system was recently designed to improve the safety of the machine. It is equipped with a heating system, air-conditioner and a security door, which must be shut before the harvester head becomes operational. An ergonomic seat with armrests gives the driver a comfortable work place. All the working functions on this machine are remote controlled – starting from putting the machine in place on the worksite and tensioning of the guy lines and skyline, right up to the operation of the carriage.

The operation of the carriage is done with two hand-held remote controls, one in the cabin and the other one with the choker-man in the forest. When the carriage is sent to the choker-man, the remote operation is sent to the choker-man also. He fixes the cut down trees, goes to a safe position and sends the carriage by automatic run to the yarder. The operator on the yarder receives the load, takes it off the carriage, and processes the logs, which are piled up behind the truck. All the Mounty units can work uphill, where the carriage is running downwards on gravity

feed or downhill with the carriage ‘liftliner’ on a haul back system. The carriages used are the Konrad ‘liftliner’ or ‘woodliner’ selfdriven carriage; or carriages with compatible radio systems.

The KMS is a yarder without crane and harvester head, fitted on a tandem axle trailer with air pressure brake. A 240 hp 6-cylinder IVECO diesel engine provides the power for a unit with a tower height of either 10 m or 12 m. The first units were built only as a tension system for downhill work with the carriage ‘woodliner’ but later a traction winch to pull a carriage uphill was added. The

control system on a KMS is the same as on the Mounty with all the functions on remote control. “The increasing demand on downhill machines as a trailed version has encouraged Konrad Forsttechnik to also construct a downhill unit on this machine type, the KMS 4000 with a cable length of up to 700 m,” the company explained. Most of the mechanical parts, as well as all the electronics are designed and manufactured in the Konrad Forsttechnik factory. “That means for our customers that problems are solved quickly, and the supply of spares is also guaranteed over the whole lifespan of the machine.”

This 2013 model Deere 843K is working in Pine Plantation. We filmed this cutter working on a second thinning job where the stems are 6 inches or so average, many less. This feller buncher is very impressive. The owner has been pleased with fuel consumption and the speed and power of this feller buncher is more than adequate in his thinning and logging operations. The operators are also making positive comments about the cab interior which has recently been much improved. The old steering column is gone and it opens everything up in terms of visibility and space for your legs. If you have not sat in one of these you should do yourself a favour and hop into one.

A Peterson 5710C horizontal grinder feeds ground wood pallets into a Terra-Select S6-E star screen. The three fraction Terra Select S6-E sorts the ground material into fines, accepts and overs. Both machines are ideal for processing mulch, compost, or other organic material.

This Peterson 6700B horizontal grinder is equipped with our new Mid-Speed C&D package, and is doing primary grind in surplus railroad ties. The second grinder (a Peterson 4710B) is processing the material to meet the product spec which is being used for energy production.

This Peterson 5710C horizontal grinder is grinding pallets for mulch production in Indiana. The machine uses a cross belt magnet to pull the nails from the material (watch for a follow-up video on this process soon!)

The Mid-Speed C&D package is designed for highly contaminated material and features several new innovations that have not been seen on high-speed horizontal grinders before. This operation is seeing consistent 300+ tons per hour of production in this material.

The 5710C is Peterson’s latest generation of high production track grinders. Powered by the Caterpillar C27 or C32 engine at 1050 horsepower, this grinder provides the highest power to weight ratio of any Peterson grinder. At approximately 83,000 pounds (37650 kg) the 5710C was designed for operations requiring high production and frequent moves between jobs.

This new 6-deck jet veneer dryer, located at Martco, Chopin, LA, is the largest dryer to date in the southern yellow pine region. This dryer will accomplish the equivalent production of two dryers, reducing labor costs by one-half. At the same time it will reduce thermal energy consumption by 10%, and exhaust fugitive emissions by 15%.

This mill is located in Ireland.

The dryer was erected off-line, and once complete it was towed into place and connected to all services under a projected expedited schedule. This allowed Martco the advantage of choosing the optimum time to disrupt its production schedule to install the additional capacity, and allowed the plant to utilize the existing building structure to house the new dryer.
