EDITOR’S COMMENT

Russian bear looms large My last editorial was a melancholy contribution that I’d hoped would be a one-off commentary on the state of the global economy and its likely impact on driving demand for forestry raw materials. Avid readers would recall I cited the International Monetary Fund’s decision to downgrade its 2016 global GDP forecasts yet again from 3.4% to 3.2% as a reason for the forestry sector to be genuinely concerned about its immediate-to-mid-term prospects. Uncertainty was the killer, according to the IMF, with key issues such as the US presidency, the UK’s referendum on its European Union membership, China’s government-fuelled economy, and trouble in developing economies the major concerns. The IMF begged for a coordinated response to this economic threat. Perhaps I was hoping against hope for a turnaround about which I might be able to lead this edition, or some ground-breaking technology news on which to rest this editorial. But, alas, no such news is at hand. Rather, the uncertainty hovering then continues to circle overhead and where developments have been made they have not favoured the course for which the IMF pleaded. The recent downgrade to this year’s GDP forecast was the fourth in 12 months but there may be another to come at the next meeting in light of recent events. At the top of the news agenda has been the confirmation of the far right and downright dangerous, according to many, Donald Trump as the Republican candidate for the US presidency. Hot on the heels of that news has been a swing in sentiment away from the ‘Remain’ camp in the UK, giving the ‘Brexit’ campaign a material lead. As this edition of International Forest Industries lands on your desk, the dye will have been cast on that vote, perhaps cementing in greater uncertainty for Europe’s future as the EU is forced to consider life without a leading member and other countries contemplate abandoning the EU vision. More directly related to the home of forestry, Wood Resources International this month published numbers from first quarter covering

Russian Roundwood exports, which showed a second straight quarter of decline and a 10% drop compared to the corresponding period in 2015. The result looks likely to signal the end of a 15-year period of export increases from 20002015, during which time exports have soared from just 7 million m3 to 23 million m3. The reason for the turnaround has been the decline in demand out of Europe and CIS countries including Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan and Tajikistan. Trade with Egypt, another key market, has also been off. The knock-on effect of this lack of demand the falling exports from the world’s largest exporter of roundwood has been a 36% drop in roundwood prices over the past two years. The fall in the rouble – primarily as a result of the oil price collapse – has helped local Russian producers to record margins, as is the case in many other jurisdictions where locally denominated costs have fallen against an appreciating US dollar, but the lack of demand from a global industry perspective is a major concern. At the same time, there has been a pick-up in demand from Japan and China, with the Asian nations registering 33% and 10% greater imports of Russian logs respectively. Though it is tempting to read this as a positive, one must acknowledge the Chinese number, which is the more significant given that countries leading role in global economic fortunes, is largely the result of another round of stimulus. Demand from China may continue to rise over the year but it is the mid-to-longerterm view that is the unknown and that will continue to keep economists up at night. I will resist the temptation to write continuously on this theme over the remainder of the year but until the EU’s longevity, US elections and the situation in China become better understood, global GDP growth and therefore forestry demand will continue to be at risk of retreat. New more effective multi-tree accumulator A new multi-tree accumulator is now available for a number of Komatsu harvesting heads. It offers greater efficiency, quieter operation, and improved reliability. An addition to increased productivity, a multi-tree accumulator also offers the advantage of increased flexibility.

Quite simply, the head can be used for more types of harvesting. Komatsu’s new multi-tree accumulator is larger and therefore much more effective as well. This means that it can handle 25 percent more from tip to tip. The new multi-tree accumulator has a cast design and a protected

valve, which increases durability, and the new damping plates make multi-tree accumulation quieter as well. The new multi-tree accumulator is an option available for the Komatsu C93, the Komatsu C123, and the Komatsu C144.

The new Komatsu C123 – productive and profitable The Komatsu C123 has an effective feed to ensure high productivity. One important reason for this is the feed roller design. The feed rollers have concave ridges for many points of contact between the stem and the feed rollers. The result is that the head’s gripping force can be kept low with retained feed force and low energy consumption. Aside from high productivity, the Komatsu C123 also provides effective and reliable measuring. Here, too, the feed roller design comes into play, ensuring highquality measurements. The new head also offers the advantage of cast delimbing knives, which provide maximum durability, high

lifting capacity, and firm stem holding. Another factor that makes the Komatsu C123 so effective is the Constant Cut saw unit, which guarantees the correct cutting speed throughout the entire cutting cycle. This means there is never any risk of running the chain too fast, thereby increasing productivity and minimizing chain shot and splitting risks. The Komatsu C123 is a truly versatile harvesting head and is even a good choice for steep terrain. The robust frame design and extra large tilt angle make the head productive. In conjunction with the launch of the Komatsu

C123, customers also have the opportunity to add the optional multi-tree accumulator, which further increases productivity. Komatsu Forest strives to constantly reduce the costs of machine ownership. The Komatsu C123 can be supplied with the Eco-GLS chain and bar lubrication system. The advantage for the machine owner is that the oil mist surrounding the machine is minimized and good lubrication is achieved with a small amount of lubricant. The oil mist around the machine considerably affects the frequency at which the windows, radiator, and other machine parts need to be cleaned.

New harvester with eight wheels done right The new Komatsu 931XC is an eightwheeled harvester with low ground pressure, great stability, and good comfort that provides the right conditions for effective production even in steep terrain and on soft ground. A harvester that is to work well in steep terrain must be stable. The Komatsu 931XC approaches eight wheels differently than other manufacturers. Naturally, it is built around Komatsu’s unique and well-proven chassis concept with an articulated joint and swing axle, a tilt function for the crane and cab, and Komatsu’s load-sensing stabilizer. A concept that has proven to be effective for several decades. As well as the swinging rear axle, the Komatsu 931XC has a bogie that is mounted on the swing axle. The new suspended bogie further improves stability with improved ground contact and a lower center of gravity. The crane’s central placement and tilt equipment that shifts the center of gravity in toward the center ensures that the machine’s weight is evenly distributed

between all eight wheels. This, and the fact that the Komatsu 931XC is the lightest harvester in its class, means that it performs outstandingly well on soft ground. The design provides excellent handling characteristics as the machine follows irregularities in the terrain exceptionally well. Good comfort is a natural result of good stability, although the cab environment is also important. The Komatsu 931XC’s cab is spacious in all directions. High air flow creates the right indoor climate. Both upward and downward visibility are good thanks to the smart front windshield design. There are several different hand controllers to choose from, as well as the industry’s first remote-controlled keyless system. A crane with high slewing torque and a machine with high ground clearance are equally important for high productivity in steep terrain. Komatsu Comfort Bogie, with its well-maintained balance and portals integrated with the rims, helps provide very good ground clearance and mobility.

Komatsu’s three-pump hydraulics are another reason why the new harvester is so effective. The clever design of the hydraulic system means that the operator can perform several tasks at the same time and maintain a considerably higher production rate while also reducing fuel consumption. North Carolina logger wins Caterpillar Loader championship at Richmond Expo

A North Carolina logger won the Caterpillar Loader Championship contest at the East Coast Sawmill and Logging Equipment Exposition, also known as the Richmond Expo. The contest, held in connection with the Richmond Expo May 13-14 in Richmond, Virginia, raised $3,320 for Log-A-Load for Kids, an organization sponsored by loggers and others in the forest products industry to benefit hospitals associated with the Children’s Miracle Network. The funds include voluntary contestant donations, a matching contribution from Caterpillar, and merchandise sales. The Caterpillar Loader Championship drew 110 participants over the twoday exposition. Contestants demonstrate their skill with a Cat® knuckleboom log loader by picking up and moving blocks between two

checkerboards. Loggers with the fastest times are the winners. Jeremy Nelson of Oxford, N.C., won first place with his time of 1 minute and 55 seconds. Less than a fraction of a second separated the next two contestants. Paul Weaver of Amelia, Virginia, won second place with his time of 2:07:22, and Roy Reinford of Pink Hill, N.C., won third place with his time of 2:07:28. Rounding out the top five were Russell Mast of Kenbridge, Virginia, with a time of 2 minutes and 18 seconds (fourth place), and Shaun McLucas of Rangeley, Maine, with a time of 2 minutes and 21 seconds (fifth place). The top three winners receive a trophy, jacket and cash prizes, and winners for fourth place and fifth place receive a jacket. The Caterpillar Loader Championship featured a Cat 559C knuckleboom loader provided by Cat dealer Carter Machinery. Three other Cat dealers had a presence

Forestry giant prepares to expand even more The world’s largest forestry fair continues to raise the bar for international forestry fairs. A year from now it will finally be time again for Elmia Wood. This global trade fair is creating even more space than before to present all the innovations for the entire logistics chain from seedling to industry. “We’re focusing even more on presenting the breadth of forestry operations and efficient, practical applications that create growth and return on investment,” explains Jakob Hirsmark, manager of Elmia Wood. “There will also be shows of harvesting in full operation, in real life conditions.”

Modern forestry is all about efficient production and logistics that must function all the way from the seedling stage to when the raw material reaches industrial customers. Elmia Wood from 7 to 10 June 2017 focuses on the totality of this process in several ways. One innovation is an arena for final felling that stretches across seven hectares, the Final Felling Arena. Here the leading manufacturers will demonstrate their harvesters in full operation in front of the public, who can see and compare the machines and how they perform.

Another new section at Elmia Wood will be Load & Transport, which brings together everything to do with forestry logistics. Here visitors can see products and services for the maintenance and construction of forest roads, the transport of forest raw materials, and timber handling at terminals and woodyards. “These products were exhibited at previous editions of Elmia Wood but we’re now gathering all of them in their own dedicated area to give visitors a better overview,” Hirsmark says. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have made their debut in the forestry sector. So far this is an exciting technology for the future with limited practical use, but drones are now at the point of becoming a self-evident part of forestry operations. At Elmia Wood drones will have their own area, the Drone Zone, where visitors can decide for themselves what the new technology can offer.

Bruks supplies machinery to BWSC A/S Bruks Group has been awarded a contract to Burmeister & Wain Scandinavian Contractor A/S (BWSC A/S), Denmark, for the supply of a wood chip handling system for the Cramlington Estover renewable energy plant in England. The Cramlington plant is a biomass plant, located in the north east UK, close to the border to Scotland. The purpose of the plantis to produce electricity on the basis of biomass fuel in the form of logs, imported wood chips and waste wood. The scope of supply is engineering, supplying and installation of a complete chipping line including log handling and a complete fuel handling system with screening and metal separation including non-ferrous separation from fuel storage up to the day silos for the boiler. Capacity to the boiler will be 180 cubic metres of wood chips per hour. The fuel handling will be managed and coordinated by Bruks AB, Sweden who supplies the wood handling system and Bruks Klöckner GmbH, Germanywill supply the complete chipping line. Total contract value is Euro 4.5 million. Delivery of the equipment will start in October 2016 and start-up and commissioning is expected to be late 2017. Bruks Group is currently supplying equipment to the BWSCwaste wood/SRF biomass plant, located at Tilbury docks, Tilbury England. Equipment delivery will start in June 2016 and start-up and commissioning is planned to beginning of 2017.

John Deere 337E Knuckleboom Loader adds a proven solution to full-tree logging lineup

John Deere has unveiled the latest addition to its line of fulltree forestry solutions, the 337E Knuckleboom Loader. Building upon the reputation of John Deere knuckleboom loaders, known for their durability, high swing torque and exceptional boom strength, the 337E model incorporates proven solutions to offer a reliable, productive machine for loggers. A key upgrade in the 337E Knuckleboom Loader is the incorporation of the reliable hydraulic system used in the 437E models. This proven system offers loggers the peace of mind that their machine has been thoroughly tested in a variety of applications. Additionally, the hydraulic

system reduces fuel consumption compared to the previous small knuckleboom loader model. “We continue to expand our portfolio of machines, creating solutions that improve uptime, efficiency and performance. The introduction of our E-Series knuckleboom loaders offers yet another step forward for our customers with full-tree logging operations,” said Brandon O’Neal, product marketing manager, John Deere Construction & Forestry. “Our 337E Knuckleboom Loaders are equipped with components and systems that have been adopted from other model machines and tested in a variety of applications, giving us great confidence in the

reliability and productivity they provide to our customers.” Like the larger 437E models, the 337E machines are equipped with several improvements to increase operator productivity. The 337E boasts a five percent increase in both swing torque and boom lift over previous models, reducing delimbing and truck loading times. For loggers, any downtime results in a loss of revenue. The 337E boasts a 173-horsepower Final Tier 4 engine that uses the same after-treatment perfected in the 700K forestry crawler dozers, providing the reassurance of a proven system. Serviceability is also improved on the 337E machines. The ground-level oil drain and filter changes make hydraulic oil and filter maintenance faster and safer, enabling operators to spend more time up and running. An optional electric refill pump simplifies service even further. A smaller, 35-gallon hydraulic oil reservoir reduces the cost of changing hydraulic oil by 44 percent. Other improvements include an easy-install citizens band radio and an updated electrical system. Integrated circuit boards replace the fuse panel and relay board, eliminating relays and dramatically

reducing the amount of wiring and connections in the circuit board area. The 337E comes standard with the JDLink™ machine monitoring system and remote diagnostics as part of John Deere ForestSight™. ForestSight is a package of customer-driven technology solutions that bring the machine, the job site and the John Deere dealer together to help loggers better manage their equipment and operations.

Doyle Simons, President & CEO of Weyerhaeuser, named RISI 2016 North American CEO of the year Doyle Simons, President and CEO of Weyerhaeuser, has been named the 2016 North American CEO of the Year. The award will be presented to Simons at the 31st Annual RISI North American Conference. He was selected by a group of investment analysts and portfolio managers who cover the North American and global pulp and paper industry. The criteria for the award include leadership, vision, and strategic accomplishment. Analysts credited Simons for Weyerhaeuser’s merger with Plum Creek Timber in February that established the firm as a giant timber REIT with a market capitalization of $23 billion, and also for its decision to

review strategic alternatives and ultimately divest its cellulose fibers business, creating a more focused forest products company going forward. Simons is the first pulp and paper and forest industry CEO to win the RISI North American CEO of the Year Award with two different companies. Simons also was selected the top North American CEO in 2009 when he led Temple-Inland, which was a major containerboard producer with forestry and building products units. Simons is the fourth industry CEO in North America to win the top RISI honor twice in the 18 years that the award has existed. It’s a tremendous honour to receive this recognition from RISI

Metsä Wood introduces an investment programme worth EUR 100 million Metsä Wood has recently launched an investment programme in its Kerto® LVL and plywood operations as part of its industrial efficiency strategy. Thanks to the programme, planned to be implemented in steps by the end of 2018, the company will be able to better meet the globally growing demand for its products and improve its competitiveness. The programme includes a total of EUR 100 million investments in Finland and Estonia. A new birch veneer peeling and drying line is planned to be built in Äänekoski to the Metsä Group’s Pulp and Paperboard Industries’ mill site. This veneer production is planned to be processed in a new plywood mill to be constructed in Estonia. Suolahti mill’s current

birch veneer line is planned to be transferred to Estonia. The total annual birch plywood production volume would increase by approximately 30,000 cubic meters. Production of a new softwood based speciality product with an annual volume of approximately 60,000 cubic meters is planned to be established at the Suolahti mill. The final investment decision will be made at a later stage. The annual production capacity of the Kerto® LVL mill in Lohja is planned to be increased by 20,000 cubic meters by replacing two oldest production lines with one new line. The increased capacity combined with the higher product quality enables strengthening of Metsä Wood’s position especially

in markets outside Europe. Executive Vice President of Metsä Wood, Esa Kaikkonen says, “These are major steps for Metsä Wood to grow and further improve cost competitiveness. Demand for birch plywood is increasing especially in the light transport industry. In Kerto® LVL business more capacity is needed to continue growth in North America, in particular. Thanks to the investment programme a notable result improvement will be achieved, fully from 2019 onwards.” The investment programme is not expected to impact the total amount of Metsä Wood’s mill personnel in Finland. Sappi to build sugar extraction demonstration plant at Ngodwana mill Sappi Limited announced that it has entered into an agreement with Valmet for the construction of a second generation sugar extraction demonstration plant to explore and optimize the extraction of biorenewable chemicals. The plant will be close to industrial size and will be located at Sappi’s Ngodwana Mill in South Africa. The demonstration plant will extract hemicellulose sugars and lignin from Sappi’s existing dissolving pulp line. The sugars platform will include beneficiation to higher value

organic acids, glycols and sugar alcohols which find application in many everyday products. The plant continues Sappi’s strategic move into the biomaterials and bio-energy business fields to extract more value from the production processes and in response to the global demand for renewable materials with a lower carbon footprint. Commenting on the decision, Andrea Rossi, Group Head Technology, explained that the demonstration plant will

accelerate Sappi’s move into new adjacent business fields based on renewable raw materials. Sappi’s strategy includes seeking growth opportunities by extracting further value from existing production processes. “The demonstration plant will make it possible to study the next generation dissolving pulping process and test new ideas at mill scale. The main features which we hope to demonstrate include increasing production output, higher dissolving pulp quality, lower operating cost and a new

optimized hydrolysate revenue stream. The products from the demonstration plant will assist in the development of various beneficiation options for the different dissolving wood pulp lines operated by Sappi,” Rossi explained.

RusForest increased harvesting by 6% RusForest harvested 121,121 cubic metresof sawlogs, compared with 74,304 cubic metresin 1Q 2015 (+63%), which included 28,793 cubic metresof recently developed own harvesting in UstIlimsk. Harvesting in Magistralny increased by 24% in 1Q 2016 to 92,328 cubic metres. In 1Q 2016, RusForest produced 23,021 cubic metresof sawnwood, compared with 21,778 cubic metresin 1Q 2015 (+6%). 1Q 2016

production was the best quarterly production ever from Magistralny. In 1Q, RusForest produced 6,225 tonnes of pellets, which was in accordance with plan. RusForest is a Swedish forestry company operating in Eastern Siberia. The Company controls long-term timber leases and utilizes these resources to produce a wide range of sawnwood products.

China’s log imports rose 3 % in Q1 The rapid development of China’s real estate sector in the 1Q 2016 has promoted the growth of domestic demand for wood products, ITTO reported. In the 1Q 2016 log imports were 11 million cubic metres, a year on year increase of 3%. Of the total, log imports from Russia rose 4% to 2.92 million cubic metres, ranking

in 2015 China’s 1Q 2016 sawnwood imports rose 16% to 6.55 million cubic metres, mainly due to increased imports from Russia, Thailand and Canada which posted gains of 22%, 18% and 55%, respectively. While there was a general increase in imports, China’s exports in the 1Q 2016 weakened. Plywood

exports fell 10% to 2.23 million cubic metres, fiberboard exports dropped 16% to 622, 700 cubic metres while particleboard exports declined 14% to 51, 500 cubic metres. The value of China’s 1Q 2016 wooden furniture exports fell 0.5% to $4.73 billion.

Peru’s wood product exports declined by over 10% in 2015 Peru has experienced a negative trade balance in wood products for many years. For example, between 2003 and 2013, wood product imports increased by almost 300% while exports barely expanded, ITTO reported. In 2015 wood product exports declined by over 10% to just $336 million but imports only fell 4%. Clearly domestic production is not meeting local market needs and this is most obvious in the added value segment of the market.

Imported furniture in 2015 was worth $120 million and imported panels were valued at $91 million. Peru exports mainly sawnwood and plywood. The situation is even more extreme for paper based products where imports exceed exports by a massive margin (imports $668 million, exports $67 million). It is only for non-wood products that Peru’s trade balance is positive but these products are exported without further processing.

Finnish sawmills aim to double exports Finnish sawmills intend to increase their exports to global markets over the next three years. Close to 20 Finnish sawmills are taking part in the Wood from Finland growth programme launched jointly by Finpro and the Finnish Sawmills Association. Koskisen Oy has also joined the export programme. The objective is to increase sawn timber exports by 500,000 cubic metres over the next few years and, in turn, positively influence Finland’s bio-products economy. The first phase of the Wood

from Finland growth programme aims to boost sawn timber exports especially in Chinese markets. China is an interesting export market because of its dependency on imported timber. “China is the world’s largest furniture manufacturer and exporter. In addition, a government programme that focuses on developing environmentally friendly construction is being launched in the country,” says Wood from Finland’s Program Manager Jyrki Mantere of Finpro. Last year, Finland exported

more than 630,000 cubic metres of sawn timber to China. The total value of sawn timber exports is estimated at Euro 1.5 billion, which makes it Finland’s fourth largest export product. “Traditionally, spruce sawn timber is shipped to South China and the Shanghai area. Hopefully, with the new export programme, new market areas in China will be found. New export markets for pine sawn timber will also be targeted,” says Jukka Tamminen, Koskisen’s export manager for spruce sawn timber.

Germany’s softwood lumber export increases by 7% At a total of around 1.35m m³, German sawmills exported roughly 7% more rough-sawn softwood lumber in the first quarter than they did a year earlier. Pro-visional figures from Destatis. The German statistics office, in Wiesbaden, shows that in doing

so 972,990 m³ were delivered to buyers within Europe, which equates to an increase of 5% against the year before and a 71.9% share of the total exports. Exports to buyers outside Europe amounted to 380,066 m³, roughly 15% more than in the first quarter

of 2015. Their share of the total exports thus rose by around two percentage points to 28.1%. Imports of rough-sawn softwood lumber were 3% higher than in the same period of last year at 868,489 m³ whereby those from Sweden rose by 3% to 162,547 m³

and those from Finland fell by 4% to 108,816 m³. Marked growth was recorded in imports from Russia and Belarus. At 113,972 m³, Russia was Germany’s second-biggest lumber supplier in the first quarter, which put it even ahead of Finland in terms of volume.

Largest Canadian based forest products companies increase net earnings in 1Q16 y-o-y The largest Western Canadian and Eastern Canadian based forest products companies reported overall higher net earnings in the first quarter of 2016 compared to both the first and fourth quarters of 2015, PwC reported. Commodity prices remained mixed for the first quarter, with lumber prices, specifically Western SPF 2x4 improving while panel and pulp prices declined. Western Canadian based companies posted net earnings of $143.7 million in the first quarter of

2016, compared to net earnings of $4.4 million in the fourth quarter of 2015 and net earnings of $122.2 million in the first quarter of 2015. Eastern Canadian based companies posted net earnings of $122.6 million in the first quarter of 2016, compared to net losses of $372.4 million in the fourth quarter of 2015 and losses of $161.9 million in the first quarter of 2015. Nine of the largest US-based forest and paper companies reported net earnings of US $1.27 billion in the first quarter of 2016,

compared to earnings of US $417.4 million in the fourth quarter of 2015 and earnings of $1.28 billion in the first quarter of 2015. Ten of the largest European based forest and paper companies reported net earnings of Euro 819.6 million for the first quarter of 2016, compared to earnings of Euro 1.06 billion in the fourth quarter of 2015 and Euro 833.1 million reported in the first quarter of 2015. Six of the largest forest and paper companies in Japan posted net losses of US $16.5 million in

the first quarter of 2016, compared to earnings of US $365.5 million in the fourth quarter of 2015 and earnings of US $215.2 million in the first quarter of 2015. In the Emerging Markets regions, five of the largest forest and paper companies reported net earnings of US $752.5 million, compared to net earnings of $575.2 million in the fourth quarter of 2016 and net losses of US $400.2 million in the fourth quarter of 2014.

Revenues in Canada’s wood manufacturing industry are expected to grow 7.2% over the next two years Pre-tax profits in Canada’s wood manufacturing industry are expected to grow from $1.1 billion in 2015 to just under $1.5 billion this year thanks to strong demand from the U.S., according to The Conference Board of Canada’s Wood Products Industry Outlook. “With the weakness in the Canadian housing market weighing on the industry, the resurgence in the U.S. housing market is expected to remain the key driver for improving demand for Canadian wood products over the next couple of years,” said Michael Burt, Director, Industrial Economic Trends, The Conference of Canada. “The weakness in the Canadian dollar will also give Canadian wood exporters a competitive edge.”

In 2015, U.S. housing starts posted double digit growth, climbing to 1.1 million units, the highest level since 2007. By 2020, U.S. housing starts are forecast to reach 1.9 million units. Given Canada is the largest supplier of wood products to the United States, accounting for just under half of all wood products imports in 2015, the strength in the U.S. housing market will continue to be a key driver of Canadian wood products exports. Industry exports are forecast to grow to $15.5 billion this year, a level not seen since 2006. Minor improvements in domestic demand and solid export growth will support stronger industry revenues. Revenues are

forecast to grow by an average 7.2% over the next two years. While industry costs are expected to increase due to rising production, they will do so at a slower pace than revenues, leading to an overall increase in profitability. By 2020, industry pre-tax profits are expected to be at their highest level in more than a decade. However, a number of risks cloud the industry’s outlook. Industry investment has yet to pick up substantially despite the industry operating at close to full capacity and could limit the industry’s ability to take advantage of rising U.S. demand for wood products. In addition, looming timber supply shortages, particularly in B.C. and Quebec,

as well as uncertainty regarding the future of the softwood lumber agreement have weighed on investment decisions and many opt to invest in U.S. sawmills instead.

Italian softwood imports fell 1% in 2015 Italian softwood imports fell 1% overall in 2015, with a 3% decrease from lead supplier Austria offset by upturns from Finland, France and Latvia. Non-EU suppliers’ import share was under 12%, with rises from Bosnia and Belarus, but shrinkage from Russia, as European Timber Trade Federation reported.

Analyst Istat reported laminated timber imports were stable, with decreases from some suppliers, but a 3% upturn from Austria. However export data from Austria seems at odds with this, showing a 9% fall. Tropical timber imports were static overall, despite a 30% fall from Gabon. But the total of 160,000 cubic

metres was still 240,000 cubic metres lower than pre-crisis levels. Temperate sawn hardwoods were 4% down. News on woodbased panels was better, with OSB imports 16% up MDF panels 8% and plywood 4%, driven particularly by okoume from France and Gabon. Veneer imports increased

4%, softwood logs fell 17% and temperate hardwoods 1.25%. Tropical hardwood log imports rose 116%, but from a 2014 low.

Weyerhaeuser will continue to operate three mills in Montana: a lumber mill in Kalispell, a plywood mill in Kalispell, and a mediumdensity fiberboard mill in Columbia

Falls.”For some time now our operations in Montana have been running below capacity as a result of an ongoing shortage of logs in the region,” said Doyle R. Simons, president and CEO. “These closures will allow us to align the available log supply with our manufacturing capacity, including adding shifts

at our Kalispell facilities. These moves will improve the operating performance of our remaining mills and best position these mills for long-term success.” Approximately 100 positions will be eliminated as a result of the mill closures.The mill closures follow a decision earlier this year to move corporate positions that

do not support manufacturing in Montana to Weyerhaeuser’s Seattle headquarters. As a result, the company also plans to close its main office in Columbia Falls at the end of the year.After the mill closures and office moves, Weyerhaeuser expects to employ about 550 people in Montana.

Pope Resources to acquire approximately 7,300 acres of timberland for $31.9 million Pope Resources has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire approximately 7,300 acres of timberland in western Washington for $31.9 million from a client of Hancock Timber Resource Group. The acquisition will be financed with a new credit facility and closing is expected to occur in the

3Q 2016, contingent on obtaining such financing. “We like what this transaction represents in terms of species mix, age class distribution, ease-of-operability, and accretive cash flow,” said Tom Ringo, President and CEO.” An added plus is how the property folds neatly into our

existing timberland management infrastructure due to its proximity to other lands we already own and manage.” Pope Resources, a publicly traded limited partnership, and its subsidiaries Olympic Resource Management and Olympic Property Group, own or manage

he plant development in Guarapuava, Brasil is the most recent example of Springer’s effective high speed lumber sorting line. After the sawing process, optimized by Microtec precision scanning technology to ensure the best cutting yield, the boards are collected, buffered, lug-loaded and transported to the Springer lumber sorting and stacker line. The main features of this high performance lumber sorting and

stacker line are: pith detection and the appearance of the growth-rings on both ends of the boards, bin sorters with efficient unloading (25 bins) and a stacker with zigzag orientation and automatic stick placers. It also includes fully automated board sorting for dimensions, board length and pith location as well as manual quality control. The performance of this line is approximately 180 bpm with short lengths (1.8 – 3.0m). The lumber processing

supply a range of various industries with reliable, consistent and cost effective components. The line includes a live in-feed deck where the trained operators determine grade over-rides and appearance specifications for the specific customer needs. From there the boards are further scanned with

The Multi-Sensor Quality Scanner scans lumber from radiata pine from all four sides according to local quality standards. It optimizes lumber for chop processing and sorting according to customer specific product quality requirements, thus maximizing recovery. The customer enjoys high quality and accuracy of the results, such as the determination of dimension of the workpiece and, of course, establishing position and dimension of wood defects such as knots, cracks, resin pockets and more. After the scanning station, the workpieces are transported to a single piece feeding system. An optimizing computer then ensures maximum utilization of the workpieces before crosscutting. The cross-cut saw model Opti-Kap 5003 cuts the boards into the correct lengths and quality according to production demands with impressive accuracy and speed. After cross-cutting, the workpieces are printed and sorted according to length and quality. This is done to ensure the correct logistics according to the different orders of the subsequent production. The cross-cut saw cycle time runs at about 200ms - 5 cuts per second - and with the added precision recalibrate function installed, it has a length tolerance equal to or better than any other docking process. The result of such high-speed production means that the out-feed of the line has to handle large numbers of components – and to do so quickly.


MICROTEC – Operation Focus Automated stacking is essential if the line is to run at these speeds and combined with 5 kicking points to live out-feed decks, the volume can be handled and inspected. This line processes for PTS’s customers 30 - 40,000 components per shift.

Family Business Rebuilds with Wood-Mizer Industrial Equipment

M

anufacturing pallets for nearly 40 years, the Indiana-based Coomer & Sons Sawmill has grown from a small garage start-up into a commercial-sized operation producing thousands of pallets daily. The family-owned company has worked with a variety of manufacturing equipment over the years, but operates today with three Wood-Mizer WM4000 industrial thin-kerf headrigs and two multi-head horizontal resaws for the primary and secondary breakdown of logs into pallet components. Throughout their history, Coomer & Sons has remained successful through economic hardships and unfortunate tragedy by developing a solid business model, taking care of their employees, and providing excellent service.

History and Growth Established by Charles Coomer in 1978, Coomer & Sons Sawmill is a family-owned and operated business that began in a Frankfort, Indiana garage with four employees producing approximately 75 pallets by hand each day. Throughout the 1980s and 90s, Coomer & Sons grew rapidly, moving into larger buildings and installing automated manufacturing equipment to keep up with the demand for their products. During this period of growth, the company developed

a close working relationship with nearby Wood-Mizer headquartered in Indianapolis just 45 miles south of Frankfort. The Coomer family has been Wood-Mizer owners for decades since running one of the company’s first multi-head resaws in the early 1990s. Coomer & Sons has also become a valued partner in testing the Indiana sawmill manufacturer’s prototype equipment and blades. In 2007, the family business changed hands when founder Charles Coomer passed away. Charles’ son, Jeff, purchased the company and became President just before the economic hardships hit in the late 2000s. During these unfavorable business times, Coomer & Sons remained profitable by offering used pallets to businesses that were trying to save money wherever they could. “When the economy was bad, we started doing used pallets and within a year we were a full blown used pallet operation selling a million and a half [pallets] a year,” said President Jeff Coomer. “It grew so fast because everybody, during those times, wanted used instead of new pallets to save the dollars.” By diversifying their business, Coomer & Sons had developed a successful model by supplying new and used pallets to a variety of global clients shipping automotive filters, plastics, recyclables, tires, and more. When combined, the

market cycles of each client’s industry provide a steady demand to avoid large gaps in production. In addition to new and used pallets, today Coomer & Sons also provides specialty heat-treated pallets for shipping internationally and supplements their pallet operation by offering byproducts from manufacturing such as mulch and firewood from log end drops. The success of the family business continued until June of 2014, when Coomer & Sons experienced a tragic fire that burned their building and production equipment clear to the ground. Although no one was injured, the business experienced major losses. At the time of the fire, the company used a circular sawmill and two older model Wood-Mizer industrial headrigs

for manufacturing pallet boards. This set-up was efficient at producing pallets at a rate of 1,500 units per day, but Jeff knew there was room for improvement. Fortunately, Jeff had purchased a building six months earlier and decided to begin rebuilding the family business at the new location. Throughout the remainder of the year, Coomer & Sons installed three Wood-Mizer WM4000 industrial headrigs, green chain, conveyor, and HR1000 Industrial Headrig to get back into production. “We decided to replace the circular mill, which I think was a very wise choice because now that we’ve had these three [WM4000] mills in for a year we’re seeing the results of less waste, less sawdust, and more profit on the bottom line,” said Jeff. Today, Coomer & Sons is sawing up to 18,000 board feet (42 cubic metres) of oak, ash, hickory, maple, sycamore, hackberry, and cottonwood each day in order to produce more than 3,000 pallets daily – double the amount of pallets they produced with the previous circle mill and headrig set up. The company is continuing to grow its operation with the scheduled addition of a Wood-Mizer WM1000 industrial headrig later this year. The WM1000 will allow Coomer & Sons to break down large logs up to 67” (1.7 metres)in diameter.

WOOD-MIZER – Operation Focus Pallet Manufacturing First, logs are debarked then transported to the main building for processing. Once logs are staged, they are run through one of three WM4000 industrial headrigs for primary breakdown and fed into one conveyor leading to the green chain. Next, the cants are edged and cut to length on cut-off saws. Cants are then run through one of two multi-head resaws to break down into deck boards and runners before final assembly into pallets with an automated nailing machine. Finished pallets are either shipped out the same day or stored inside their 88,000-square-foot (8,175 square metre) facility. Primary sawyer, Troy Shimmel, has worked with Coomer & Sons for the past 15 years and says the WM4000 is simply “fun to run”. Compared to the older model Wood-Mizer headrigs, Troy says the WM4000 saws logs much faster and comments on the improved log handling functions. “I can cut bigger logs and the log turner has a dual turner on it,” said Troy. “The three backstops come up instead of two which helps keep the logs on the saw bed.” Jeff says the WM4000s are an integral part of the pallet operation and points out the computer setworks provide accuracy and efficiency during log breakdown. “The WM4000’s are a great piece of machinery,” said Jeff. “I think Wood-Mizer’s proven that you can take less material and make it a better saw, heavy doesn’t always mean better. It’s the simplicity of Wood-Mizer’s equipment that is just really nice.” Coomer & Sons fits their sawmill equipment with WoodMizer blades and have their own blade sharpening and tooth setting equipment. Jeff says that by having their own blade maintenance equipment in house, they are saving money on shipping and are able to sharpen blades up to four times before needing a new blade. “When I get a blade from Wood-Mizer I can saw a lot of material with it, even after it’s been resharpened two or three times,” said Troy. Coomer & Sons was one of the testing sites for Wood-Mizer’s new Vortex Bandsaw Blade. The newly engineered blade profile is designed to remove dust while sawing in order to

minimize or eliminate the need for sawdust removal after the lumber is processed. “The Vortex blade was getting 98 to 99% of the dust off, so it was impressive on how much dust it took off [compared to] a typical saw blade,” said Jeff. “We deal a lot with a filter company where if the dust is on the pallet, the dust gets in the filters and then it’s a major issue. Our goal is to get 100% of the dust off, if you don’t get the dust off, you’re not going to have the customer.” Currently, Coomer & Sons takes multiple measures to ensure dust-free pallets for their clients including using a dedusting machine and also brushing off the final product when assembled. The groundbreaking Vortex blade may lessen the labor and time associated with sawdust removal from the final product.

The Family Business In addition to Jeff operating as President for the past decade, multiple members of the Coomer family occupy key roles within the company including Jeff’s wife Kathleen and son Jeffrey. There’s a lot of hats you have to wear,” said Jeff. “You have to be the grandfather, the dad, the employer and it’s really tough sometimes, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world.” Jeff’s brothers, Chris and Dennis, along with nephews Seth and Andrew also hold positions in the operation. “In business you need to have key personnel,” said Jeff. “My lifelong friend Jeff Stewart oversees all the operations, Ed Cox manages the used pallet facility, and Richard Miller is the maintenance supervisor over all facilities. Without these people, business wouldn’t be so smooth.” When it comes to business advice, Jeff says it’s the little things that employees remember and appreciate. Every year, the company hosts a Christmas in July and provides turkeys and ham to their employees for Thanksgiving dinner. They have purchased hundreds of bicycles, tools, televisions, and more as employee giveaways throughout the years. “Take care of your employees first and they’ll take care of you,” said Jeff. “Give them a pat on the back and tell them good job. I think that makes more of a difference than anything else.” For the future,

Jeff sees the company remaining steady at least in the next few years. “Sometimes when you get bigger you get more headaches and less profit in the end,” said Jeff. “If you can stay a little bit smaller and find a nice medium niche, you’ll continue to flourish.” With a proven ability to adapt with the times, Coomer & Sons is positioned for continued success, wherever the road leads. “In the

pallet business, anybody can sell and build pallets, I think you’re selling service,” said Jeff. “As long as you’re on time and you do a great job in the service aspect of it, you’re going to keep customers. he challenge of supplying mobile sawmilling technology is tough. This is not only from a technical perspective in terms of keeping up with the latest innovations and possibilities to be incorporated into mobile units, but also keeping up with the demands of the most fleet-of-foot sector of the market. Mobile sawmill users are by their nature the great adapters of the industry. They see opportunities faster than most and move to capitalise on those opportunities as fast as their equipment will allow. This is where the suppliers of the best range and the most versatile equipment really come into their own. In this year’s review of mobile sawmilling technology, International Forest Industries takes a look at two of the best manufacturers going around, which have made a name for themselves by providing exactly those qualities – versatility and range. And of course more than their fair share of innovation.

RESCH & 3 has been producing stationary and mobile horizontal band saws for Profiline use for over 60 years. The company does not do mass production but rather manufactures each sawmill to the specification of each customer. Sawyer Hofer Anton has been working with his DM 1050 PROFI for three years. When Anton originally bought the unit he had been searching for a mobile, but at the same time robust and professional machine. But it was the travelling cab and the variety of accessories rarely found in industrial sawmills that convinced him to make the purchase. With the DM 1050 PROFI mobile band saw, logs up to 1.1 m in diameter and a length of 13 m can be cut into planks, squared timber or slats.

Quickly ready for transport Thanks to the six hydraulic support

legs, hydraulically unfolded extensions and hydraulic pivoting fixture, the entire system is ready for transport in 30 minutes. The machine can be mounted and aligned within one hour of arriving on site. The DM 1050 PROFI has a total weight of 7.5 t and is allowed on the road at a maximum of 40 km/h. Optional RESCH & 3 offers a special suspension for speeds up to 80 km/h.

Main drive with a diesel engine The diesel engine with 55 KW allows independent working without being constantly dependent on a power supply. In addition, the diesel engine has the advantage that the speed can be optimised on the saw blade. Especially in winter, with frozen wood, it is important that the speed is reduced.

A direct view of the sawn timber also ensures constant quality control. The cutting height setting can be adjusted easily for the desired sort of sawn timber by using the display screen with several predefined cutting programs.

The saw blade guides are placed automatically as close as possible to the log at both sides. This has the advantage that the operator need not pay attention to the saw blade guide and can focus more on the cut.

Guaranteed cutting The monitoring blade deviation continuously controls the cutting accuracy. If the entered tolerance range is exceeded, an acoustic signal sounds in the cabin and the feed rate is reduced.

The automatic plank remover makes this possible: Depending on the specific cutting operation, each individual plank, squared timber or flitch is removed automatically

The log is measured automatically during the first cut. The data is shown in cubic metres on the screen and stored in the system. Various information, such as wood sort, percentage bark content, customer data and so on, can be entered and selected. The measured logs can be filtered by customer, type of wood or date and printed directly in the cab or via USB stick at home on a PC.

Practical sawblade replacement For saw blade replacement, the pressure on the blade tensioning system can be released from the cab, and the protective housing is opened by hydraulic actuators. The saw blade can be easily removed and replaced. The machine is ready for use again in very little time.

New forwarder Komatsu 895 to be previewed at Komatsu Days (available from the start of 2017) Komatsu Forest, which is launching a number of new products at its major customer event Komatsu Days, will also be previewing its new forwarder model Komatsu 895, which will be available from the start of 2017. The 895 is the forwarder that became a giant in the world of mechanized professional forestry. With its 20-ton load capacity, unique powertrain with 28.5-inch bogie and wheels, and one of the market’s largest forwarder loaders, it is the preferred choice for heavy final logging on the world’s largest forestry markets of Sweden/ Norway, Canada, Brazil, Australia and Russia. The 895 has further productivity improvements to offer. The machine is equipped with a larger bunk. The height and width of the new FlexBunk can be adjusted from the cab. The LoadFlex bunk has also increased in size. The sturdy powertrain provides greater traction and the transmission has been upgraded since 2016 with a larger hydrostatic pump for better handling. The crane is being upgraded with a new hydraulic system and a larger crane valve for improved crane operation. The 12H GTE Hybrid demo was held at a demanding final clear fell site where the machine could certainly not hide its true nature. It went smoothly up a steep hill and harvested approximately 2 m³ of Douglas fir stems and just kept on going and going. Even in these challenging conditions the harvester did not seem to use its full potential. The diesel engine assisted by the electric motor delivered unbelievable power of 520 hp and torque of 2000 kN. Multitasking of the crane, feeding wheels, saw and driving seemed an easy task for the harvester in this challenging environment. Who would have thought that felling large trees on a steep slope could be done so efficiently? This new member of the Logset family is the response to the market and customer demand. The development and building of the 12H GTE Hybrid had to embrace these three principles to become the best harvester ever built: • E fficiency: power, immediate response, high capacity and consistency • E conomy: low fuel consumption, stable engine performance and reliability • E nvironment: low emissions, ground pressure and noise level The 12H GTE combines all these advantages to the highest possible standard. It can decrease the fuel consumption per m³ significantly without compromising power. Everyone at the demo could notice the noise reduction and stable engine performance which are other significant benefits of the hybrid system. The diesel engine is constantly running at approx. 1500 rpm. There is no engine peak loads like when using conventional technology where the workload varies. The hybrid system whilst discharging delivers up to 220 hp to support the diesel engine during high workload. Thanks to this, the diesel engine runs smoothly and releases less emissions even in the most challenging situations. The low emission, fuel consumption and noise level implies this harvester to be a true step forward towards a more


sustainable and environmentallyfriendly way to harvest timber. Certainly compared to the previous Logset harvester generation with the 8.4 l CTA engine, Logset achieved +72 % increase in power, +54 % increase in torque, +27 % increase in hydraulic flow, 5% reduction in noise level and 20 –30% reduction in fuel consumption. These results also all in all approximately 35 – 40 % lower emissions per produced cubic meter based on the site measurements.

The hybrid solution consists of two parts: the generator/ electric motor and the Powerpack. The Powerpack is a closed unit containing a supercapacitor, control units and a water cooling system.

Surely the 12H GTE Hybrid is a huge step in the forest machinery industry, although it has the same footprint as the well-known Logset 8H GTE. Both machines have the same ground pressure properties. The 12H GTE Hybrid is equipped

with Mesera 285H, the strongest parallel crane available on the market. Combined with the long knives of the TH75, the setup is breath-taking when it faces real harvesting challenges. Some comments during the demo proved how unbelievable this machine is: “We knew from the technical data and the presentation that the 12H GTE Hybrid would give an incredible performance and now, after seeing it in action, we believe it.” “You certainly chose a very demanding site with challenging trees to demonstrate the potential of the machine.” This event was a success for Logset, the Chairman of the

Introduced in 2013, optional Intelligent Boom Control (IBC) makes working with a forwarder faster – easily adding as much as one load per day. IBC adjusts the entire boom’s motion to that of the grapple. Instead of controlling the different parts of the boom, the operator only moves the grapple to the tree. The new version of IBC improves the precision of the grapple control, especially with long reaches. IBC is available as an option for the 1010E, 1110E, 1210E, 1510E and 1910G machines.

Rottne is gearing-up with three new new forwarders and several new features for their forwarder program. ROTTNE F10D, that replaces F10B, has upgraded mechanical structure for frame work and bogies and the load capacity is increased to 10 ton. Engine and the transmission performance are also updated but is still a small forwarder meant for hauling in thinning and small clear cut. F10D has a 4.5 litre turbo charged 4-cylinder engine with EGR, particle filter and SCR system (same as in F11D). The engine rate is 125 kW (168 hp) and with some changes in the transmission is the tractive force 145 kN. Cat® forwarders get the wood out Cat® forwarders load logs and transport them from the forest quickly with high hydraulic flow, ergonomic controls, and fast travel speeds. It is powered by the Cat C7 147 kW (274 hp) diesel engine with ACERT technology and is paired with a hydrostatic propel system for maximum power on grade through wide engine rpm and ground speed range. And it features one of the fastest, strongest, and most reliable cranes on the market. The Cat 584HD is ruggedly built and “well suited to rough terrain,” noted Brown. For example, it boasts the largest center oscillation articulation joint -- where the machine bends in the middle -- of any forwarder on the market, according to Brown. The rugged front and rear

frame structures, heavy duty cast articulation and large oscillation bearings are built for long service life in demanding forest applications. High stress areas have been reinforced for increased durability. The fan requires less horsepower and cools more quickly, allowing

Tigercat grapples Since an average of 50% of the forwarder duty cycle is spent loading and unloading, increasing the number of logs per crane cycle is another way that Tigercat is improving overall machine productivity and reducing forwarding cost per tonne. he new PT-175 forestry mulcher is a more servicefriendly, more accessible, and lighter mulching unit than those before it, according to the manufacturer, PrimeTech. In its brand new form, the PT175 preserves the features of the previous model, introducing some brilliant improvements: At Bauma this year, PrimeTech presented the latest version of its 160 HP tracked, self-propelled carrier (prime mover) for vegetation management and land clearing – the PT-175. PrimeTech has changed the game once again with a new improved tracked carrier. The redesign was made keeping in mind input and feedback from customers, who live mulching every day and who know what works best. In its brand new form, the PT175 preserves the features of the previous model, introducing some brilliant improvements.

Remote control PT-175 is now also available with remote control. Remote control technology enables PT-175 to operate in dangerous conditions and on very steep slopes. It is able to perform uphill, downhill and sideways, without putting the operator into risky and unsafe situations and avoiding an uncomfortable seating position for the operator due to continuous driving sideways on slopes and ditches. An innovative remote control ensures accurate guidance of the vehicle at a range of up to

1000 meters. All of the controls and displays the operator would normally see in the cab are on the remote-control unit, too. The runtime of the batteries reaches up to 10 h. Moreover, the tilting remote control unit can be opened by a manual pump, which allows easy access and inspecting of all components located underneath.

More accessible, more nimble and lighter The frame redesign looked at making the PT-175 leaner, with the result of the engine compartment now being even more accessible: • T he internal roll-bar has been removed for a much better access to the engine and related components

chain, pins and bushings • W ider sprocket and idler to avoid twisting of the track chain • I dler with bigger diameter and stronger tensioning device

PT-175 is equipped with an oversized radiator, allowing the machine to operate in very hot climate with no overheating issues. The radiator comes with coarse fins, preventing it from getting plugged by dust and dirt and making cleaning much easier. As an option, the PT-175 can be equipped with a proportional (socalled variable pitch) and reversible sucker fan. Based on radiator temperatures (coolant, intercooler and hydraulic oil), the blades will automatically adjust their position in the most efficient and effective way. This results in less power absorbed by the fan and in lower fuel consumption as well as less air and dust flow crossing the engine compartment, helping to keep it cleaner.

Needing to access more extreme environments has forced manufacturers to deliver best-in-class comfort and stability usually reserved for standard harvesting applications into steep slope settings

T

here was a time when it was acceptable for the units reserved for steep slopes to be more difficult to manoeuvre, less comfortable and compromised on power. Operators needed to be more careful because safety was that much more difficult to ensure. However, as contractors are asked to venture onto increasingly challenging stands, the need to better performance on steep slopes has heightened and the competition to supply the standout units for that particular environment is heating up. Comfort, ground preservation and stability, specifically levelling capabilities, are the

battleground and heavyweight suppliers Komatsu, Cat, Tigercat, John Deere and Ponsee are the contenders.

Komatsu has one of the broadest ranges of forest machines designed for steep slope logging applications including track fellerbunchers/harvesters, wheeled harvesters, forwarders, log loaders and forestry excavators. “When it comes to cutting on steep slopes, Komatsu´s new harvester Komatsu 931XC is designed for steep terrain and soft grounds,” the manufacturer said. The Komatsu 931XC is an

eight-wheeled harvester with low ground pressure, “extraordinary stability, and good comfort that provides the right conditions for effective production in steep terrain”. A machine that is to work well in steep terrain must be stable. The Komatsu 931XC is built around Komatsu’s unique and well-proven chassis concept with an articulated joint and swing axle, a tilt function for the crane and cab, and Komatsu’s load-sensing stabiliser. “A concept that has proven to be effective for several decades,” Komatsu said. As well as the swinging rear axle, the Komatsu 931XC has a bogie that is mounted on the swing axle. The new suspended

The Komatsu 931XC has a powerful Stage IV/Final engine that fulfils the most stringent emission requirements and reduces fuel consumption. All other Komatsu rubbertyred harvesters have six wheels. The 901, 911, 931 and 951 models can handle the most demanding logging, from sensitive thinning in Nordic countries to working on slopes in southern Europe. Maintaining stability at all times is important in being able to optimise harvester productivity in steep terrain, and all Komatsu six-wheeled harvesters offers

two distinctive features to achieve this. One involves the positioning system of the crane in relation to the cab and operator. Both the cab and crane are on the same frame, rotating and levelling together, which provides a clear and unhindered forward view for the operator. Levelling cylinders with sensors provide continuous automatic crane and cab levelling to reduce operator fatigue when working on slopes. The other feature is the unique and wellproven concept of a rear

bogie further improves stability with improved ground contact and a lower centre of gravity. The crane’s central placement and tilt equipment that shifts the centre of gravity in toward the centre ensures that the machine’s weight is evenly distributed between all wheels. This, and the fact that the Komatsu 931XC is the lightest rubber-tyred harvester in its class, means that it also performs “outstandingly” well on soft ground. “Good comfort is a natural result of good stability,” the manufacturer stated. The Komatsu 931XC’s cab is spacious in all directions. High air flow creates the right indoor climate. Both upward and downward visibility are

good thanks to the smart front windshield design. There are several different hand controllers to choose from, as well as the industry’s first remote-controlled keyless system. A crane with high slewing torque and a machine with high ground clearance are equally important in steep terrain. Komatsu Comfort Bogie, with its well-maintained balance and portals integrated with the rims, helps provide very good ground clearance. Komatsu’s three-pump hydraulics means that the operator can perform several tasks at the same time and maintain a considerably higher production rate while also reducing fuel consumption. axle stabilisation system. Combining this stabilisation system with the automatically levelling cab system makes the harvesters extremely stable. All Komatsu harvesters are also available with an effective cab suspension system, Komatsu Autolev Advanced. “This technology is as simple as it is ingenious,” Komatsu said. The cab suspension is hydraulic and its functionality is controlled with MaxiXplorer. The result is effective damping of hard knocks. When it comes to Komatsu forwarders, 855, 875 and 895 models have the unique bogie-concept as an important feature that makes them productive in steep terrain. “With a powerful axle system and bogie using a robust portal-type construction, the Komatsu Comfort Bogie design produces the best combination of traction force and operator comfort,” the manufacturer stated. Another feature on all Komatsu forwarders are

The XT430L-3, XT445L-3 and XT460L-3 models feature the industry’s original “engineup” two-cylinder 4-way cab levelling design, which “revolutionised mechanical felling on slopes”, according to Komatsu. This cab levelling system maximises operator comfort, increases harvesting productivity and improves machine lift and swing torque performance. Komatsu’s pioneering setback boom design on tracked machines further improves machine performance on slopes by allowing the operator to cut very close to the machine to optimise full lift capacity. The zero-tail swing

feature enhances the ability to manoeuvre and work in confined spaces. “With these two features plus high lift capacity, powerful swing torque, a robust undercarriage and best-in-class cab, the XT-3 Series provides high levels of operator comfort, ease of operation, productivity, reliability and durability,” Komatsu stated.

Cat track feller bunchers and harvesters use a robust three cylinder levelling system – the only system to offer full twoway simultaneous levelling – to enable logging operations in steep terrain. Cat track feller bunchers and harvesters are designed with the optimal combination of lift capacity, swing torque and tractive effort ratios to enable loggers to boost production in the woods. Four models are available to suit diverse logging applications and environments. The Cat 541 Series 2 and

the Cat 552 Series 2 are full tail swing machines designed for high-production clear-cutting or final felling in rough terrain. The 552 is a levelling machine for improved operation on steep terrain. The Cat 521 and 522 B Series machines are near-zero tail swing harvesters. The 522B is a levelling machine for select or clear-cut logging, and the 521B is a non-levelling model best suited for plantation thinning, biomass harvesting and medium-production select or clear-cut applications. Both levelling track feller bunchers and harvesters feature Caterpillar’s patented 3-cylinder tilt mechanism with simultaneous forward and side-by-side tilting. The unique mechanism simultaneously can tilt the machines 21° forward and 11° side-to-side. The design of the system significantly reduces stress loads into the leveler structure, lower frame and track frames. Trunnion cylinders are mounted on 51 mm (2 in) steel plates and transfer vertical

The machines have excellent ground clearance and an open carbody design, increasing mobility by eliminating interference by large stumps, rocks or other obstacles encountered in rugged working conditions. The Series 2 track feller bunchers and harvesters feature smooth hydraulic performance, excellent fuel economy, and a comfortable operator station with great visibility. There are two feller buncher booms and two harvester boom arrangements available for each model. Furthermore, the Series 2 machines compare well in lift capacity against competitors in their size class. With their lift capacity, reach and working envelopes, these machines deliver high performance. Swing capacity is another advantage of the Cat track feller bunchers and harvesters when working on steep slopes.

“The strong swing torque gives the operator the ability to swing large loads uphill,” said Jared Dunn Caterpillar Forest Products product performance engineer for the Series 2 and B Series machines. “The combination of swing and lift capacity plus multifunctioning capability reduces cycle times and increases production.” Both machine platforms are equipped with the Cat C9 226 kW (303 hp) ACERT engine. The C9 is a common engine design with a proven track record of reliability and durability in the woods. A high-capacity cooling system and on-demand reversing fan keep the harvesters debris-free and running at the proper operating temperature, optimising performance, durability and fuel economy. The side-by-side radiator/ oil cooler provides excellent cooling capacity for high production bunching and harvesting, and the on-demand Flexxaire fan activates only

when required, allowing the cooling fan to purge debris from the radiator area for a cleaner cooling system. The IQAN control system automatically adjusts the Flexxaire fan blade angle, reducing horsepower demand and lowering fuel consumption.

The purge cycle frequency and duration can be set by operator in the cab to suit varying application conditions. The closed centre hydraulic system includes fully adjustable electric over hydraulic controls and industry-leading flow capacities. Two pumps power the hydraulic system to give loggers smoother multifunctioning. Large structures such as swing bearings and booms have been designed for longer life and durability. The tracks and all undercarriage rolling components are high-grade components that extend track life, reduce repair costs and increase stability. Loggers around the world are being challenged to exploit timber resources in harder-toreach, steeper settings, but

traditional methods of hand felling and cable yarding are labour intensive and dangerous for workers, according to Tigercat. In regions such as New Zealand, the Pacific Northwest and Chile, Tigercat has taken a leading role in working with operators to develop new and safer technologies for mechanised harvesting on steep slopes.

Robust, forestry grade cabs are critical for operator ergonomics and safety when operating on steep slopes. Tigercat forestry cabs are certified to internationally recognized standards including: • T ip-Over Protection Structures (TOPS) • Roll-over Protection

Structures (ROPS) • Operator Protection Structures (OPS) • Falling Object Protection Structures (FOPS). Non-ratcheting, five-point seat belts keep operators in their seats in case of a roll-over. Finally, three exits (top, side and front) mean workers can always exit the machine safely.

Levelling track machines Tigercat’s levelling track machines are used in a wide range of applications for steep slopes such as shovel logging, felling and harvesting and use innovative technologies optimised for steep slope work. It uses two massive hydraulic cylinders and heavy steel sections for a solution that is simple, robust and reliable. STEEP SLOPE LOGGING To further enhance the ability of Tigercat’s track machines to work on slopes, an optional tether hook attachment plate has been developed. The tether anchor bolts firmly to the main carbody structure of the undercarriage and allows either single or double cable tethers to be attached to the track machine. The tether can then be connected to a variety of different third party winch system that can assist the track machine up or down slopes. LS855D shovel logger The LS855D shovel logger is uniquely versatile solution for steep slope logging. It is a nimble and powerful levelling carrier suited to felling, prebunching and shovel logging in challenging terrain. The LS855D can be equipped with Tigercat’s 5195 directional felling head for felling and shovel logging with one machine or a grapple and live heel for shovel logging. The LS855D can cost-effectively forward wood to roadside in steep or wet soil up to distances of 80-100 m (262328 ft). It can be strategically located in challenging parts of the cut block to forward trees to the skidder or fell and bunch for a yarding system. LX830D feller buncher The recently updated Tigercat LX830D is a powerful, minimal tail-swing, levelling feller buncher at home in steep slope operations. The closed loop track drive system provides outstanding speed and performance along with greater hydraulic efficiency on steep slopes. The high horsepower Tigercat FPT engine and efficient hydraulic circuits provides the operator with quick, responsive control for high performance and productivity. The limited tailswing design lends itself to steep slope thinning and final

felling applications. Rubber tyre machines Tigercat also produces skidders and forwarders with unique innovations to enhance productivity on steep or soft terrain. Tigercat designs and builds its own driveline components and axles for its wheeled vehicles to ensure they are well matched to the widest range of forestry duty cycles. Six-wheel skidders Only Tigercat sells six-wheel drive skidders – the 615E and 635E. Tigercat’s electronicallycontrolled, hydrostatic drive plus the additional tire surface area from six wheels means the 615E and 635E skidders can handle much steeper slopes than conventional four-wheel drive skidders. Hydrostatic drive minimises wheel spin during takeoff because maximum tractive effort is available at low engine rpm. The result is reduced site disturbance, extended tire life, less driveline stress and improved performance in soft or steep terrain. The 615E features Tigercat’s exclusive EHS (Electronic High Speed) drive system. EHS provides the tractive effort of the deepest gear ratio in Tigercat’s standard transfer case as well as the top speed of the shallowest gear ratio offered in the standard transfer case. EHS computer logic selectively takes one of the drive motors offline when high tractive effort is not required. When operating conditions such as steeper slopes demand high tractive effort, both hydrostatic motors are working to provide maximum power transfer to the ground. 1085C forwarder with WideRange Stable and powerful with Tigercat-built extreme-duty, widespread bogie axles, the 25 t capacity 1085C forwarder is ideally suited to high

production operations in extreme terrain. Compared with a conventional two-speed forwarder transmission, WideRange provides extremely high tractive effort while permitting quicker working travel speeds. WideRange is an “infinitely variable”, singlerange transmission well-proven in extreme applications. It allows for high tractive effort to carry massive loads up steep slopes and achieves a maximum working speed of 7 km/h. The 1085C can manoeuvre on steep slopes “like no other machine on the market”, according to the manufacturer.

As customer demand to mechanise harvesting on steeper slopes increases, so does John Deere’s commitment to developing steep slopeready solutions to make harvesting of those sites safer and more comfortable for the operator, and therefore more productive. 900M-Series tracked feller bunchers John Deere’s fleet of tracked feller bunchers are “power-

packed machines that don’t disappoint when it comes to high-production logging in tough terrain”, according to the manufacturer. The 909M and 959M large tailswing tracked feller bunchers feature the “best-in-class” levelling system that is especially advantageous to operators when working on steep slopes. The levelling system on the John Deere 909M/959M incorporates a patented levelling control system that uses sensor technology to maximise the forward tilt angle (26° forward), while electronically preventing any possible mechanical interference when also tilting to the side. The levelling envelope boundaries are set automatically and the patented system provides a smooth transition when approaching the limits of the levelling envelope, eliminating any sudden stops in the movement of the levelling system, further enhancing the stability of John Deere levelling machines when used on slopes. The primary advantage of John Deere’s patented levelling system is operator comfort. Every additional degree of levelling system capability helps the operator to be more comfortable, which translates to higher productivity.

John Deere’s 8-wheel harvesters are designed for steep slopes and soft terrain

The 900M-series machines also offer a host of new innovations to make them even more productive and reliable than their highly successful predecessors, including improved cab comfort, high swing torque, increased boom capacity and an extended reach directional feller boom. A completely redesigned operator station provides a significant boost in visibility on slopes. Floor-to-celling front window, large side windows plus an overhead skylight provide approximately 40% more window area forward of the operator, resulting in an outstanding view of the cutting area. A standard floor mounted window is also advantageous on slopes, allowing operators to see the tracks when working on slopes and avoid hazards such as stumps, holes or rocks.

The improved visibility combined with the increased boom performance and the patented levelling system make the John Deere M-series machines an ideal choice for customers that are looking to move into both tethered and untethered steep slope operations. 8-wheeled harvester John Deere made headlines with the introduction of the G-Series harvesters to the European market in 2015, and the new G-series models recently made their North American debut. One model in particular, the eight-wheel 1270G Harvesters, are designed for steep slopes and soft terrain. Equipped with eight-wheel drive, it offers excellent traction and stability, allowing

operators to use the machine in terrain where mechanised logging has never been an option. The eight-wheel machine features a large 9 litre engine and CH7 Harvester boom that performs at a level normally reserved for larger size-class harvesters. The optional eight-wheeled version delivers higher tractive force with more

ground clearance, a large approach angle and strong Duraxle bogie axles with customised balancing gear units. These features allow the 1270G to perform well on steep slopes and other demanding terrain. The machine’s levelling and rotating cabin also provides exceptional operator comfort and productivity on steep terrain.

STEEP SLOPE LOGGING Frank Mäder was one of the first contractors in Germany to test the new John Deere 1270G 8-wheeled harvester. “I’m very satisfied with the 1270G’s climbing ability on steep slopes, particularly in combination with tracks, even when having to pass higher stumps or other obstacles,” he said. He also appreciates the redesigned rotating and levelling cab that makes it a lot easier to work on slopes and in uneven terrain. Aftermarket traction assist solutions While John Deere machines have been built slope-ready for a long time, the use of

traction assist winch systems available through third parties is becoming more common across the world for steeper applications. For wheeled CTL harvesters and forwarders, John Deere has partnered with HAAS Maschinebau, a German-based company that specialises in the development of aftermarket traction assist winches exclusively for John Deere Forestry machines. HAAS offers several traction assist winch solutions for most models of John Deere harvesters and forwarders. These winches can be installed on the front or rear of the machine allowing customers to work above or below the extraction road and can also be fitted with an optional straw-line winch to significantly simplify the job site set-up. On the full tree side, there are numerous third party suppliers of traction assist machines and John Deere has been actively working with many of these suppliers to ensure a trouble free interface for the customer.

Eight-wheel harvesters can be used for harvesting wood from slopes where mechanised harvesting was previously unprofitable, even impossible. Over 90% of the total PONSSE production consists of eight-wheel forest machines that feature excellent usability on slopes and soft soil. The change has been fast: Ponsse introduced the first prototype 8w harvesters in the summer of 2009. The PONSSE harvester product family now includes eight-wheel harvesters in all size categories. The stability and driveability of an eight-wheel machine are

also important features away from slope sites. An ergonomic working environment is essential for the driver’s well-being at work and therefore the productivity of the work. Eight-wheel harvesters have made harvesting possible at more sensitive sites as well – soft soil and during the mud season – and shortened expensive idle time. Eight-wheel machines are more environmentally friendly and suitable for soil with poor carrying capacity due to their low surface pressures. With the weight distributed over a greater number of wheels, the surface pressure on

soil from eight-wheel machines is significantly lower when compared to six-wheel machines. This naturally leaves fewer tracks marking the terrain and saves fuel. As the 8-wheel harvesters have gained more stability and traction to access more and more difficult harvesting terrains, the requirements for harvester cranes have also grown higher. Designed especially for regeneration and sloping sites with large trees the new PONSSE C5 telescopic crane offers approximately 10% more lifting power, up to 25% more slewing power, and a more robust and reliably structure.

One of the biggest differences in the productivity of different machine models come from the crane’s properties and the stability of the machine. The agility and ease of use of the crane and the stability provided by the eight wheels increase productivity considerably. The machine’s centre of gravity also remains low when operating the longer reach of the crane, driving comfort is better, and there is no need to sacrifice the power of the machine. In the most challenging logging sites PONSSE harvesters and forwarders can be equipped with traction winches to support the

wheel drive and to protect soil. The traction winch mounted on the machine’s rear frame assists the machine while logging in the steep slopes. This reduces need of sky-line working on slopes, reduce harvesting costs and minimize the risks. Herzog winch is available for both PONSSE harvesters (Ergo and Bear) and forwarders (ElephantKing, Elephant and Buffalo). Cut-to-length PONSSE machines have been used with winch system in Brazil, China and Central Europe. Key factors that drive product development in the PONSSE forwarder range include power,

comfort of use, environmental friendliness and the favourable ratio of net weight to load-carrying capacity. The powerful engine and effective loaders make PONSSE forwarders extremely productive. Dimensions that deliver the load evenly on all wheels and the smallest turning radius of their size categories minimise the load of PONSSE forwarders on soil. At the same time, they have sufficient power for changing harvesting conditions and difficult terrain, such as steep slopes and deep snow. Due to its great tractive force and excellent cross-terrain performance, loads can be moved quickly and smoothly. The efficient Mercedes-Benz engine provides high tractive force and hydraulic power, which results in lower fuel consumption, a lower noise level and more comfortable loading conditions. The machine frames endure extreme loads, and they are made of high-quality components, which provide the machines with long service lives.

This Peterson 6700B horizontal grinder is equipped with our new Mid-Speed C&D package, and is doing primary grind in surplus railroad ties. The second grinder (a Peterson 4710B) is processing the material to meet the product spec which is being used for energy production.

This Peterson 5710C horizontal grinder is grinding pallets for mulch production in Indiana. The machine uses a cross belt magnet to pull the nails from the material (watch for a follow-up video on this process soon!)

The Mid-Speed C&D package is designed for highly contaminated material and features several new innovations that have not been seen on high-speed horizontal grinders before. This operation is seeing consistent 300+ tons per hour of production in this material.

The 5710C is Peterson’s latest generation of high production track grinders. Powered by the Caterpillar C27 or C32 engine at 1050 horsepower, this grinder provides the highest power to weight ratio of any Peterson grinder. At approximately 83,000 pounds (37650 kg) the 5710C was designed for operations requiring high production and frequent moves between jobs.

Doppstadt Expo 2015 - a Bird’s-eye View

50 years of Doppstadt: More than 5,000 guests from the environmental and recycling sector experienced two unforgettable days: on 24 and 25 June 2015. Environmental technology company Doppstadt staged what was arguably the largest European trade show of 2015 in this field on its 220,000 sq.-metre works site (Saxony-Anhalt). On show were over one hundred machines for the shredding, sorting and treatment of waste and biomass. What was unique thereby

was that more than half of the machines could be seen in action. In two-hour live demonstrations, the guests saw how coarse shredders, screening machines and exact hackers shredded tree trunks into sawdust, separated waste from recyclables and sorted pebbles from sand heaps. In doing so, Doppstadt demonstrated its problem-solving skills through combined processes: material collected by machines was initially shredded, then separated into its various components by means of separation processes such as screening, washing or air separation.

This dryer will accomplish the equivalent production of two dryers, reducing labor costs by one-half. At the same time it will reduce thermal energy consumption by 10%, and exhaust fugitive emissions by 15%.

This mill is located in Ireland.

The dryer was erected off-line, and once complete it was towed into place and connected to all services under a projected expedited schedule. This allowed Martco the advantage of choosing the optimum time to disrupt its production schedule to install the additional capacity, and allowed the plant to utilize the existing building structure to house the new dryer.
