EDITOR’S COMMENT
Coming up Trumps? Predictably, given this is the first time I’ve had a chance to write a column since the United States elected Donald Trump to its most senior office, the next 550 words will be devoted to speculation about what his rise to power is likely to mean for forestry professionals. The main focus has rightly been on Trump’s plan to spend some $1 trillion on infrastructure. While there is likely to be precious little wood used for his famous wall proposed to separate the US from its southern neighbour, Mexico, most building projects will be using a combination of wood products in vast amounts, particularly newly-developed, high-strength, engineered structural wood products.
innovate and collaborate across borders. The international industry has seen a number of company combinations that have seen European and North American innovation join forces for industry-reshaping results. Trade partnerships have also allowed Europe’s overproducing biomass sector feed a US energy market that has been, until now, in overdrive to become greener. These partnerships have been thrown up in the air by the election result. Beyond these threats is the wider economic issue of Trump starting an international trade war. Such an event would bring world trade to a near stand still, slowing GDP to a crawl and therefore hampering the need for development materials, such as wood.
The US forestry sector, particularly in its north, is theoretically in a position of strength, as it will all of a sudden have the responsibility of supplying new development ahead of imported suppliers.
A trade war is predicted by an alarming number of stakeholders as a relatively likely outcome from Trump’s near-term economic stimulus policies.
Likewise, US-based equipment manufacturers, led by heavyweight John Deere, will be responsible for arming US contractors for what is expected to be an expanded market; while sawmills will also be mainly locally supplied.
In Davos recently at the World Economic Forum, Chinese President Xi Jinping warned of the need to embrace globalisation and free trade at the same time Trump was readying himself for his inauguration and a period of enforcement for his protectionist, ‘America First’, policy.
This is obviously great news for these groups. On the flip side, there are obvious dangers to this approach. Most immediately, one must feel for the Canadian forestry sector, which faces an uncertain period surrounding its key export market while the reality of Trump’s policies take shape. And anyone who hoped perhaps he may be all mouth and no trousers when promising to put America first, need only look at his persistence in pursing his immigration promises in the face of international and legal opposition for evidence he is a man of conviction. From a wider industry perspective, we may also be looking down the barrel of a period during which it becomes more difficult to
4 International Forest Industries | FEBRUARY 2017 / MARCH 2017
You know you are living in a truly odd world when the head of the Chinese Communist Party is campaigning for free trade and the leader of the ‘Free World’ is talking about slapping taxes on any company looking to import its goods into the US. In such a world, it is difficult predict anything, but in the International Forest Industries offices here in the UK, we are betting on a short-term period of growth for foresters followed by a prolonged period of uncertainty, at best.

New grapples enhance productivity of John Deere knuckleboom loaders
The new grapple, available with a 48- or 52-inch opening, is made with a more durable cast design and a larger, more robust rotator To stay ahead of the competition, loggers need to keep up at the landing, and the John Deere 437E
and 337E Knuckleboom Loaders are now equipped with new grapples manufactured by John Deere to
further improve productivity and machine durability. The E-Series machines deliver five percent more swing torque and lift force over previous models, and the new grapple complements these features by improving rotator torque and response times, and enabling higher side loads and rotator lift capacity. The new grapple, available with a 48- or 52inch opening, is made with a more durable cast design and a larger, more robust rotator, providing loggers with a heavy-duty machine designed to withstand the toughest of jobs. “If I could describe the new grapple in one word, it would be ‘nimble’ — and my operator agrees,” said Donald Mixon, owner of Mixon Saw Mill in Bermuda,

Brazil attracting investment into pulp production The export market for pulp produced in Brazil has become increasingly important for the pulp sector with the export share of domestic production having gone up from 55% in 2007 to almost 70% in 2016. Pulp export volumes have expanded in an impressive fashion over the past two decades, with increased year-over-year shipments for 19 of the past 20 years. This trend continued in 2016, with export volumes likely to reach almost 13 million tons, an increase of about 11% from 2015, reports the Wood Resource Quarterly. Not surprisingly, China’s steady increase in demand for pulp the past decade has been the key driver to Brazil’s pulp export success story. Over one-third of Brazil’s exports were destined for China this year, up from 23% five years ago.

John Deere adds 450K to crawler dozer lineup & updates 550K and 650K models Since introducing hydrostatic transmissions to the North American crawler dozer market in 1976, John Deere continually utilizes customer feedback to better design machines to meet the needs of the evolving contractor and job site. The new 450K and updated 550K and 650K dozers are no exception, and they help meet customer needs in site development, commercial and residential building, as well as road-building applications. “The 450K, 550K and 650K are key models in the John Deere dozer lineup,” said Nathan Horstman, crawler dozer product marketing manager, John Deere Construction & Forestry. “With the 450K, we focused on proven K-Series durability and fuel-saving technologies, and we updated the 550K and 650K models to offer enhanced reliability and serviceability upgrades to improve customers’ operating costs.” The 450K boasts a John Deere 4.5L Final Tier 4 diesel engine with 80 horsepower. The latest crawler addition delivers 16 percent more horsepower along with a more impressive power-to-weight ratio, available torque and drawbar pull than its J-Series counterpart. Like its K-Series siblings, the 450K features Eco Mode that regulates engine RPM and the hydrostatic transmission to burn up to 20 percent less fuel in a wide range of applications. The addition of Total
Machine Control (TMC) enables an operator to customize control of decelerator mode and response, forward/reverse ground speed, steering modulation, forward/ reverse speed ratios and even record machine usage. The updated 550K and 650K dozers incorporate a John Deere 4.5L Final Tier 4 diesel engine with 92 horsepower and 104 horsepower, respectively. The 550K features six undercarriage rollers versus the 650K’s seven, and 86 inches of track on the ground versus the 650K’s 92. An efficient, friction-eliminating direct-drive fan on the 450K and 550K models is easy and less costly to maintain. A cool-on-demand variable-speed fan on the 650K runs only as needed, reducing fuel consumption, and includes an optional reversing feature to aid cooler cleanliness in high debris environments. When examining operating costs, all K-Series models boast exclusive turbo cool-down that increases durability by allowing the engine to idle momentarily prior to shutting down. An auto shutdown feature turns the engine off after an operator-determined period of machine inactivity, saving fuel and warranty hours. Additionally, both the 550K and 650K include a composite fuel tank that features a dual-fill design for easy access from either side of the machine. Other serviceability improvements include redesigned diagnostic lines
The 450K is the newest addition to the K-Series crawler dozer lineup with 16 percent more hp than its J-Series counterpart, along with fuel-saving Eco Mode with pressure sensors and John Deere transmission software. All three dozers are available with optional electrohydraulic (EH) controls that improve blade response, including increased hydraulic motor capacity on the 450K that enables 50 percent greater blade-raise performance. Additionally, EH controls means the dozer is grade-control ready, and the John Deere “open architecture” design makes adding a gradecontrol system as easy as plugging in the components, calibrating and going to work with a Trimble, Leica or factory-installed Topcon 3D-MC2 system. Fleet managers looking to get the most out of their 450K, 550K and 650K can rely on their John
Deere dealers to provide Ultimate Uptime, featuring John Deere WorkSight. With Ultimate Uptime, owners receive predelivery and follow-up inspections that include five years of JDLink™ telematics, machine health prognostics, remote diagnostics, programming capabilities and the ability to add dealer-provided uptime solutions to a customized package.

Premiere for MAN’s logging trucks at Elmia Wood’s new exhibition area The German truck manufacturer MAN sees Europe’s forestry sector as an increasingly important market. That’s why the company is exhibiting at the world-leading forestry fair Elmia Wood 2017 in the new Load & Transport area, which brings together everything to do with logistics en route from the forest to the industrial consumers. “Our focus is on better economy for timber hauliers,” explains JohnDavid Schnackenberg, manager of the forestry segment at MAN.
GPS-controlled transmission and upgraded engines MAN will present two improved engines. They are the D26, which now meets the toughest European environmental demands, and the D38, a 15-litre six-cylinder inline with 640 HP and 3,000 Nm torque. The upgrade has given both models an additional 20 HP each. The trucks come with either manual or automatic transmission, the MAN TipMatic® TX. The design aims to reduce the haulier’s costs
The biggest model from MAN in a logging truck version to be exhibited at Elmia Wood 2017
New area at the fair Elmia Wood 7–10 June 2017 is the premiere of the Load & Transport exhibition area, which focuses on the construction and maintenance of forest roads, the transport of forest raw materials, and timber handling at terminals and woodyards.
The MAN TGS looks like an ordinary logging truck but has hydrostatic drive on the front wheels and a tag axle with steerable wheels
Innovations on show While this is the first time MAN is exhibiting at the fair, the brand is not unknown in the Nordic forests. Back home in Germany the trucks are a common sight. And now the company has decided to focus more on this segment. “The big news at the fair will be improved powertrains,” Schnackenberg reveals. “One product we’re exhibiting is an engine that meets the very latest environmental demands, Euro 6 C.” MAN is bringing three or four vehicles to Elmia Wood. Another one will be on show at the stand of crane manufacturer Epsilon. There are three models: the heavy trucks TGS and TGX, and the new family member TGE, a van in the 3.5 to 5 tonne category. It is built on a Volkswagen Crafter, which was chosen as Van of the Year 2017, but in a more professional execution with more applications.
and improve the work environment. One of the innovations is GPScontrolled transmission. “The trucks know in advance that a slope is coming and switch to the correct gear for optimal engine speed,” Schnackenberg says, as an example of the benefits of GPScontrolled transmission. Real-wheel or all-axle drive At Elmia Wood MAN is also exhibiting a three-axle truck with HydroDrive® and a controllable tag axle. MAN introduced HydroDrive ten years ago and other brands have recently followed. It involves hydrostatic front-wheel drive, which can be selected as required at speeds up to 28 km/h. Normally the drive is on one wheel pair, which gives optimal fuel economy, but when accessibility requires, the front-wheel drive and rearwheel steering can be brought into play. Another innovation is that HydroDrive can be offered in combination with automatic transmission.
MAN is presenting its innovations there with the aim of increasing its share of the timber and forestry truck market in the Nordic region, Germany, France, the former Eastern Europe and Russia. And the message is the same everywhere: more efficient vehicles mean more money left over for the haulier.

Komatsu bogie lift – an old favourite receives new eagerly awaited function Komatsu Forest has several options that facilitate workdays in the forest and that also contribute to increased profitability. The bogie lift is a forwarder option that has been available for more than 20 years and that is very popular, mainly in southern Sweden and Germany. At the request of its customers, Komatsu are now also introducing a bogie lift for the Komatsu 855, this time with the eagerly awaited function, individual bogie lift. The bogie lift function is available for the Komatsu 835 and Komatsu 845 forwarders, and is a practical function in several different contexts. An important application area is when operating on roads between felling sites. Chains are often used to prevent skidding, but because these can damage road surfaces, they must be removed prior to road operation between felling objects. With forwarders in southern Sweden, for example, conducting between 70–80 machine movements each year, it is costly to spend so much time mounting and removing chains. With the bogie lift, the chains can be mounted on the rear wheels of the front bogie and
the wheel pair easily lifted during transport. This brings increased productivity and consequently increased profitability for the machine operator. Another application area is when driving in steep terrain down to the landing. As the hill levels off, there is a risk of the machine’s nose scraping the ground, but with the bogie lift it is easy to compensate for this and lift the nose until the entire front section has come down on flat ground. That the bogie lift with its versatility is popular in southern Sweden is confirmed by Joakim Danielsson, sales representative for Komatsu Forest in southern Sweden. “Of the model 835 and 845 forwarders I’ve sold, all customers have chosen the bogie lift option.” Demand has been substantial for the bogie lift being available as an option on more forwarder models. Now that the bogie lift is being launched as an option on the Komatsu 855, it will be with another very eagerly awaited function – individual bogie lift. The new function entails that the right and left bogie can be individually controlled, something that gives the forwarder very good
manoeuvrability when obstacles are encountered. This is important in areas when space in stands is restricted during thinning and when there are narrow access roads, where easily manoeuvrable machines are needed with good terrain handling properties, such as in southern Sweden and Germany. From a purely practical standpoint, if the forwarder is operating aslant or over an obstacle, the operator can choose to press down the front bogie’s rear wheel on the downhill side. This permits the tilt to be compensated
to a certain extent and keeps the cab more upright, which increases both manoeuvrability and operator comfort. Joakim Danielsson has looked forward to the new function for quite some time and he believes that it will be a success in southern Sweden. “I’ve already sold one Komatsu 855 forwarder with individual bogie lift. The customer placed an order as soon as he heard the function was available,” says Joakim in closing.
Kone-Ketonen launches a new, big processor head, Keto 873 The new KETO 873 processor is designed for processing larger trees in demanding conditions of North America and elsewhere. Keto 873 is the latest model of Keto product family. This 3360kg/7400lb head can be installed on 30+ ton tracked base machines. KoneKetonen and Quadco Equipment Inc will introduce the KETO 873 in the 79 th Annual Oregon Logging Conference in Eugene, between February 23 rd to 25 th, 2017. KETO 873 was created based on the vision of CEO Lauri Ketonen, designed and produced by the engineering team lead by designer Mika Myllyniemi, and utilizes the best proven components available today. One of the most fascinating
innovations of KETO 873 is the ROTOBEC rotator, which spins 360 degrees and beyond. This offers a totally new world of freedom and efficiency to operators. KETO 873 design incorporates a well proven PARKER valve system. Functions are proportional and operate only on-demand, which are key factors in optimizing the fuel consumption of the base machine and running the system at the lowest possible temperature. Track feed motors are made by DANFOSS like in other KETO models. The 500cc motors produce the stunning level of nearly 4kN of true net pulling power making sure that even the toughest trees can be pulled and delimbed quickly and efficiently.
10 International Forest Industries | FEBRUARY 2017 / MARCH 2017
Like in any KETO head the length measuring is done by the TWO feeding tracks. This has proven and unique KETO feature, considered to be the most accurate measuring system in the industry. It is simple, extremely reliable and low cost to maintain. A larger front knife cylinder together with the bottom arm cylinder provides the needed holding power when pulling big trees from the deck. The geometries of the 3 moving and one fixed knives and arms have been optimized to handle the full range of diameters. Another very important feature in the KETO 873 is the shortest possible tilt frame with a very wide working angle. The short tilt minimizes the unwanted head sway
caused by the boom movement, thus making the head easier to control.

Prinoth develops a strategic partnership with Ponsse The partnership aims at developing a forwarder with rubber tracks. Prinoth will participate in a consortium of European forestry institutes together with Ponsse. The partnership aims at developing a forwarder with rubber tracks that can protect the forests and soils while improving productivity and access to weak forest soil. Consortium members are examining more stringent thresholds for soil damage, developing improved operations practices and would like to better regulate rut creation and
treatment. The Prinoth Panther undercarriages, which have a ground pressure as low as 4 psi (pound per square inch) or 281 g/ cm2, can provide a good solution to the consortium. This undercarriage has a unique system equipped with rubber tracks and an exclusive high travel large wheel/tandem that were developed to work together to provide the best off-road capabilities with minimal impact on the environment. This feature will help reach one of the project’s specific objectives
which is to significantly diminish wheel rutting and soil disturbance compared to a regular wheeledforwarder. The project will comprise of Panther undercarriages assembled into a Ponsse forwarder. The undercarriages will also provide improved speed and as such, increased productivity for businesses. It is envisaged that this forwarder will allow for better machine utilization rates for contractors which will, in turn, translate into a more constant wood supply independent of
weather conditions. Prinoth’s undercarriage expertise developed over many years will then be applicable to a very demanding industry like forestry.
John Deere offers intelligent boom control for its 1910E Forwarders John Deere is now offering the popular Intelligent Boom Control (IBC) as an option on all 1910E Forwarders in North America. Now available on the biggest forwarder in the John Deere lineup, IBC technology significantly increases machine productivity and
efficiency, while providing the best possible fuel economy and boom lifetime. With intuitive IBC technology, the powerful CF8 boom on the 1910E is accurate, fast, and easy to operate, as the operator now controls the boom tip directly
instead of controlling each of the independent boom joint movements manually. (See full report in the April / May issue)

LOGGING & BIOMASS NEWS - WORLD MARKETS
Södra increased timber exports to Poland in 2016 Södra’s exports of sawn timber to Poland have increased 150% in 2016. Although Poland is not an entirely new market for Södra, it has grown rapidly in recent years and is interesting from various perspectives. Construction timber accounts for the bulk of sales and there are several underlying reasons for the strong increase in exports. Timber house production is becoming increasingly popular in Poland, and Scandinavian timber has a good
reputation. Scandinavian timber maintains an even quality, with less waste, so that customers get more for their money. But the increase is also due to the fact that Södra has chosen to invest more resources in this market. “There is a high level of activity in Poland at present. Construction is on the increase and interest in sawn timber is growing,” says Andreas Jonasson, Marketing Manager at Södra Wood. “In a short time, we have grown our
market shares in this market, which is a clear indication that our product range is attractive from several perspectives. The products that are in demand in Poland belong to our core segment and are precisely those that we will focus on broadly and in the long term.” Customers are mainly interested in spruce in a variety of dimensions and lengths, in particular roof truss manufacturers and packaging customers. For Södra’s part, the Polish
market has grown steadily in recent years. A real upswing was experienced in 2015 and this trend has persisted in 2016. Södra now accounts for more than 20% of total timber exports from Sweden to Poland.
2016: Record southern pine lumber exports Exports of Southern Pine lumber in 2016 reached a record 688 million board feet valued at more than $413 million, according to the Southern Forest Products Association (SFPA). Within that volume, exports of pressure-treated lumber also reached a record, with more than double the shipments from just five years ago. producers under the Southern Pine Council (SPC) promotional banner. Working together, the associations leverage USDA Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS)-administered programs to promote exports of Southern Pine lumber. These cost-share programs, including the Foreign Market Development (FMD), Market Access Program (MAP) and Emerging Markets Program (EMP), allow the industry to reach emerging markets that were, until recently, untapped. Exports have jumped sharply 17:22
to regions targeted by SPC’s international market development efforts. Record sales were achieved in China and in emerging markets recently targeted by SPC in Southeast Asia, Central America, and South America. “Rising demand for Southern Pine lumber is undeniably linked to the industry’s efforts to introduce this species to buyers worldwide,” noted Jerry Hingle, SPC’s international consultant.

Trump inauguration worries B.C.’s forestry industry The inauguration of a highly protectionist president of the United States has sparked trepidation among B.C.’s forestdependent communities and prompted B.C. Premier Christy Clark to tout her government’s efforts to find new markets outside the United States for its softwood lumber reports the Globe & Mail. Donald Trump did not wait for the keys to the Oval Office to signal a new U.S. trade agenda that threatens to tear up trade deals deemed unfavourable to homegrown industry and jobs. British Columbia, which supplies half of Canada’s softwood-lumber exports to the United States, is now bracing for what could be its toughest round of trade conflict
over softwood lumber. Already, the U.S. International Trade Commission has launched an investigation into alleged harm of Canadian imports to the American softwood-lumber industry. Speaking to the annual Truck Loggers Convention last week, Ms. Clark vowed to continue to fight for B.C.’s forest industry in the latest trade battle. “Time after time, without regard for the facts, the American government has accepted all of the allegations that have been filed by the U.S. lumber industry. You would get more fair and impartial hearings from a judge at a pro-wrestling event,” the Premier told the convention. Ms. Clark announced that the province has made progress
though in building alternative markets, with the first major shipment of B.C. lumber to India currently on its way. The concerns remain, however, about what Mr. Trump’s administration will mean for those who rely on forestry in B.C. The sector is still shrinking. In 2001, when the B.C. Liberals took office, the province had 91,000 forestry jobs. The government launched a “revitalization plan” to tackle the decline. Today, there are about 60,000 forestry jobs and, in addition to the renewed softwoodlumber war with the United States, there is a shrinking timber supply due to the mountain pine beetle infestation. This week, Powell River Mayor Dave Formosa signed a letter, along
with mayors of seven other forestresource communities, calling for a corporate tax break aimed at providing relief to struggling forest companies. The mayors want the province to eliminate its sales tax on industrial electricity purchases, which they say will improve competitiveness and save jobs. In an interview, Mr. Formosa said the softwood-lumber trade war isn’t just another challenge, it is part of a larger threat to keeping rural communities alive.

he well-known supplier of thermal treatment and chemical treatment plants, IWT, with more than 1,200 units around the world show the latest developments in their system for SSP thermal treatment at Ligna 2017 using high pressure in a closed process. The plants are manufactured for capacities between 1,500 m3 and 7,500 m3 annually per unit. The process improves timber properties with regard to durability against rot, fungi and insects, increases dimensional stability radically, and provides timber with a nice warm brown color. The process from IWT, Moldrup-SSP, treats the timber with a final moisture content not lower than 4 - 6%, making further processing easy and at temperatures between 160 and 200 C. Recent customers for the newest system in 2016 are Atlanta Hardwood and Bingaman Lumber in United States. The plants come with an optional system for handling of all emissions from the process. Capex from 150,000 Euro turn-key. IWT also present their plants and equipment for pressure treating with capacities between 1,000 m3 and 100,000 m3 annually, completely automatic handling systems, and creosoting plants. A new vacuum dryer for smaller capacities of freshly sawn hard to dry species like oak and eucalyptus with thicknesses of 50 mm and more from 80% moisture content is shown at the Ligna 2017 exhibition. HewSaw is once again revolutionizing the primary breakdown sector of the sawmill industry with the introduction of their latest technology - dx sawing. Aimed at maximizing speed, recovery, efficiency and throughput, dx sawing will be a game changer for many sawmills. With HewSaw’s dx sawing, the saws are cutting through the cant in two stages instead of one, allowing for a substantially reduced depth of cut with each saw. For sawmills using this technology, this can result in higher feed speeds with smaller diameter saws and thinner kerfs. • more production volume in a shift • higher recovery or yield from each log • the possibility to run for longer periods before saw and knife changes • improved surface quality and exceptional saw deviation • lower hp motors can be used resulting in reduced power requirements HewSaw is the only primary breakdown producer that can offer this technology and the concept and technology are patent pending worldwide.

Weyerhaeuser upgrades PSL Weyerhaeuser has upgraded its Trus Joist Eastern Parallam PSL beams and columns with a new unique exterior coating reports Building-Products.com. The patent-pending proprietary surface modification technology reduces the rate of moisture absorption during yarding and construction, and delays the effects of UV penetration. “The new coating is uniformly
sprayed on to both the narrow edge and wide face of Eastern Parallam PSL at our manufacturing facility and chemically modifies the outside wood surface of the beam or column,” said Barry Viviano, engineered lumber products regional manager in New England. “The protective surface covering resists thickness swell from exposure to both moisture and UV conditions during construction.”

High performance Weyerhaeuser Diamond™ subfloor panel introduced at 2017 International Builders’ show
Weyerhaeuser launched its newest oriented strand board product, Weyerhaeuser DiamondTM, at the 2017 International Builders’ Show in January. The top-quality engineered subfloor panel is designed to provide industryleading wet weather performance and superior strength and nail retention to help eliminate squeaky floors, providing builders a “worry free” subfloor solution. “The new Diamond panel has been engineered to provide unmatched durability, backed by a limited lifetime warranty,” says Travis D. Perry, market development manager with Weyerhaeuser. “It’s specifically manufactured to resist inclement weather, while also saving effort in the installation process with our
easy-fit tongue-and-groove edge construction. Diamond is a dream product for a builder because it reduces, or eliminates, steps in the installation process while providing superior panel properties. “The fully-sanded face on the Diamond product assures uniform thickness. The panel provides hassle-free installation and is protected by a 500-day no-sand guarantee. We’ve built on the best technology in our Edge and Edge GoldTM panels and increased their qualities for this panel to assure the reduction of squeaking floors and ridging hardwood and tile. Best of all, Diamond is part of a larger family of flooring products provided by Weyerhaeuser. When combined with Trus Joist® I-Joists, builders can now construct a truly
high performance floor system warranted by a single company.” Available on the East Coast starting in Spring 2017, Diamond features the patented Down Pore® self-draining technology introduced on Edge Gold panels several years ago. Down Pore’s notch and groove system channels water away from the end of the panel and away from the supporting member. The result is that standing water collected on the surface of the floor during construction drains away. More than 20 years ago Weyerhaeuser pioneered enhanced subfloor technology. During the past decades engineers with the company have continued to introduce time-saving and technological enhancements to the company’s line of oriented strand board products. “Our marketplace is very big on hardwood flooring so we anticipate Diamond will be well received,” according to Brad Brubaker, area general manager for Weyerhaeuser Distribution out of Concord, N.C. “This area of the country has a strong need for high-end oriented strand board flooring products, and Diamond will perfectly fulfill those needs. “What distinguishes Diamond from its competitors is its ability
Travis Perry, Weyerhaeuser’s SE Market Development Manager
to combine all of the desired qualities of a panel product — such as superior strength properties, wet weather performance and durability, surface appearance and fastener retention — into one easyto-install and worry-free subfloor. That’s a product builders are going to appreciate and use.”

pringer Maschinenfabrik has developed a new lug-loader concept for the lumber industry. Including a number of significant technical innovations, the concept to be presented at Ligna contains a unique singulating unit with which the boards are kept fully under control through the entire feeding process, resulting in smooth and gentle manipulation and transport to the connected scanner or trimmer units. With this new feeder concept, Springer has particularly focused on the optimization of sawmills producing different dimensions on the same production line. The efficiency of the process is
Stenner will be showing off its resaw technology at Ligna line destined for a client in Ireland who ordered the machine on the basis of the successful installation of a similar line in 2015. The MHS range consists of machines with pulley diameters from 915mm (MHS9) up to 1,370 mm (MHS137). Applications range from the manufacture of high quality accurately sawn flooring material to simple fencing and pallet
components. The larger units will, typically, go into canter lines to give maximum flexibility in cutting patterns and also as multiple units with handling systems to resaw lumber into saleable sizes from large dimension lumber produced in a primary processing line. The successful range of ST 36 inch resaws will be represented and will feature the latest
innovations in accurate high-speed radial arm resawing using single stand-alone machines. “We welcome customers old and new to discuss their future requirements” says Stenner Managing Director, Syd Mather.

Springer presents lug loader for mixed board dimensions increased substantially with the new E-feeder simultaneously handling all products produced by the sawing line. The smooth and reliable flow of the boards enables maximum efficiency of the lumber production line. This leads to higher overall performance at lower comparable cycles which result in lower maintenance costs regarding the overall lumber production. The new feeder unit’s main assets are its high process reliability as well as its careful handling of the lumber products. Board surfaces and edges remain unharmed due to the larger surface area of the clamping arms,

PLANERS – GILBERT
The right solution for every mill The Gilbert Planer-Moulder
For over 30 years, Gilbert has been the market leader in the design and manufacturing of planermill equipment
F
rom molding applications, to high speed mills, Gilbert says it has the right model of planer for every mill. With its four planer models, Gilbert has helped customers worldwide reduce their mill costs by improving their productivity, wood quality, mill efficiency and safety.
Gilbert high-speed planer The Gilbert high-speed planer features eight feed rolls, a 16 in cutting circle, can fit up to 42 knives for the “nicest finish on the market”, and will run at feed speeds up to 4,000 ft/minute and over 300 lugs/minute. This model of planer is offered to mills that want high speed production and require the most heavy-duty machine. Or, this model can also be very beneficial to mills looking at improving their lumber finish the best way possible with the biggest cutting circle and the most amount of knives to have the highest knife mark per inch.
26 International Forest Industries | FEBRUARY 2017 / MARCH 2017
Gilbert 6-roll planer
Gilbert moulder planer
The Gilbert 6 Roll Planer is designed for mid-to-high planermill speeds and production. This model features six feed rolls and a 14 in cutting circle. It can fit up to 36 knives for an impeccable finish. It runs at speeds up to 3,000 ft/ minute. Its compact design will fit very well in an existing layout.
“The Gilbert moulder planer is recognized for its strength, versatility and high quality results,” the manufacturer said. Additional cutterhead modules offer the “most exquisite” lumber finish on the market. It is designed to produce all profile and special products, as well as high quality construction lumber. Gilbert offers the Moulder opportunity to all of its models of planer, either with the S Series, 6 Roll or High Speed planer models.
Gilbert S Series planer The Gilbert S Series planer is a smaller model designed to run at lower speeds. It was developed for mills that wanted Gilbert’s state-ofthe-art technology, but didn’t have the needs for a bigger planer. It features eight feed rolls, an 11 in cutting circle and can fit up to 26 knives. It runs at speeds from 300 up to 2,000 ft/minute. “This model is the solution to diversified value added products like moulding; remanufacturing, finger jointing, cedar, pine and rip saw operations,” the company said.
Unique to Gilbert: The pullthrough technology The Gilbert planer pulls the wood into the machine. It is an innovative design compared to the push feed technology, and has proven its efficiency for the past two decades and over 100 planer mill installations. The Gilbert Planer is completely designed to operate with a gap. With the Pull-Through technology,
each piece of wood is dragged through independently from one another, no matter the space between each piece. This exclusive technology ensures high efficiency: Gilbert guarantees 95% running uptime and higher. Another important advantage of the Pull-Through technology is the planer capacity to run all boards – twisted, crooked and bowed do not need to be removed. Since the
the tilt hoist is all that is required. The Gilbert Planer is completely electric driven, which results in high energy savings and less maintenance.
Progressive cutterhead technology Over the years, Gilbert has continued to work on developing the best and most progressive cutterhead technology. The Gilbert cutterheads use a hydro-grip

wood is not being pushed in the machine, it doesn’t break. With the Pull-Through technology, a bridge is not required between the feed table and the planer. The purpose of a bridge is to close the gap, but the Gilbert runs with the gap, so there is no need for a bridge. Therefore the Gilbert Planer will fit in a very compact layout, which helps in building space savings. Also, the planer can run without an infeed operator: one operator at
system to tighten the knives, therefore there are no bolts to install. It allows for more knives in the same cutting circle for nicer finish and high quality lumber. Gilbert has also designed straight knife side heads. Straight knives are more robust than LV knives which ensures a better finish. Gilbert flat, corrugated and reversible knives are easy to grind with any conventional machine. Straight knives allow for more knives in the same cutting circle for

a nicer finish. Gilbert has developed triplepattern side heads to keep heads three times longer in the planer. The height adjustment is automatic from a pattern to another. Both these features considerably increase operating hours.
Safety: Gilbert’s priority Safety has always been a priority for Gilbert. For this reason, The Gilbert Planer is controlled by the Gilbert Automatic Positioning System. This system allows operators to control the planer from outside the planer room. The Gilbert Automatic Positioning System is operated by installing electric servo-motors onto each axis for automatic adjustments, optimal precision and higher grades: top and bottom heads, side heads and bedplate. Over the past few years, many more automatic adjustments have been added to the Gilbert controls
to make the planer room even safer, such Visit our as automatic stand H10 jointing Hall 25 of top and bottom heads, automatic jointing of side heads, automatic adjustment of pressure plates. “At Gilbert, we adhere to the industry’s highest standards,” the manufacturer said. “Our management and staff are committed to offering state-ofthe-art equipment synonymous with innovative, reliable and sustainable solutions. “A team of experts is available 24/7 to provide customers with unparalleled service, worldwide.”

Air Board provides 100% reading efficiency
The lug loader accumulation is automatically controlled by the Air Board Tracker cameras, which provide precisely the presence of the boards at each location on the chain. It is like having an infinite number of virtual photocells. As of early January, ten systems had been sold with six already up and running.

As an example, the virtual number corresponds to the assigned number of the board by the planer grader optimizer. Even if the boards are moved and mixed up, the virtual number and solution sticks to the board ensuring the 100% reading.
This provides many advantages • No contact, no printing on boards • No mistakes because of bark or holes under the print area • Virtual board numbering and hand off to the lug loader or board dealer • Up to 100% reading efficiency • Replaces photocells, with infinite adjustment per product. (ex. Lug loader accumulation adjustment directly from the PLC per product) • No more maintenance and replacement costs for consumables or marking hardware • ROI in months for most customers.

SAWLINES – STENNER
Stenner gears up for another big year The UK-based company has a strong order book going into this year
A great 12 months over 2016 was built on innovative thinking from the band resaw specialists
S
tenner enjoyed a very good 2016 with a number of complete lines supplied to the UK and Irish markets. Recent developments in the area of automatic setting of the dimension of the lumber have allowed the company to produce lines that combine horizontal and vertical saws, which are all capable of angle cutting such that the owner can produce almost anything a market would require. The automatic setting systems move the saws, via electric motors, to the correct height and angle at the touch of a single button via a selection of pre-set values. The system was developed for a client
Stenner had a big 2016 32 International Forest Industries | FEBRUARY 2017 / MARCH 2017
in Scotland who has a line of six MHS10 (42 in pulleys) Horizontals followed by a vertical VHET120 (48 in pulleys) Twin resaw. “Set up time has been reduced from 10-20 minutes to a couple of minutes with excellent accuracy,” says Stenner CEO Syd Mather. Long-term customer Philip Blake of Munro Sawmills had this to say about his Stenner experience: “We have been using 12 Stenner MHS10 Bandsaws for 12 years cutting at 60 m/minute for 10 hours a day. “Downtime has been minimal and where parts have been needed Stenner have been helpful and not expensive. Cutting accuracy is
excellent. “The Stenner line is the heart of our sawmill and it has performed consistently well for many years. We have recently decided to invest in a further six MHS10 saw units to extend our capability and have taken advantage of Stenners recent developments in the area of automatic setting of the height and angle of the saw units, inverter drives for the pulley rotational speed and spray lube systems for the application of lubricant for the sawblades and pulleys.” Another long-term Stenner Client added a new line recently and he too was very vocal about the result.
The Stenner team
“We are now ramping up our production on the new Stenner line of MHS10 horizontal resaws with a vertical twin at the back,” Brian Thomson, CEO of UK-based Thomson Sawmills stated. “This line gives us the flexibility we sought when we made the investment and we knew our volumes would improve when compared to our existing MHS9 line but didn’t realise by how much. We are producing in three days what the old system produced in five days “Clearly we are delighted.” Export markets have been strong for a couple of years but the
recent Brexit announcement and the subsequent negative effect on the British pound has given the company added impetus. The Stenner order book has equipment destined for clients in Australia, Canada, France, Israel, New Zealand, Poland, the US as well as the UK and Ireland. Whilst horizontal resaws are an important element in the Stenner portfolio, the centre cutting verticals in both single and twin format are selling very strongly alongside the traditional radial arm stand-alone pitless resaws such as the ST80, ST100R and ST130. “We have a strong order book
This line gives us the flexibility we sought when we made the investment Brian Thomson, Thomson Sawmills
leading into 2017 and with this being a Ligna year we expect this to continue well into 2018 and, hopefully, beyond,” commented Stenner Sales Director Fred Harding. “Whilst we are enjoying our prosperity we will not rest on our
laurels and will be announcing several new developments at Hannover in May. Watch this space,” he added. Stenner is based in Tiverton, Devon, and specialises in the production of wide band resaws.

HewSaw’s Latest Technology On May 22-26 2017 Hannover, Germany Visit HewSaw at:
Hall 25, Stand D24 For a look at what’s new in sawmilling, stop by HewSaw’s stand at Ligna 2017. There will be lots to see and talk about from the Finnish manufacturer, including the company’s revolutionary dx-sawing. Below: An internal look at a HewSaw with dx sawing shows the first set of arbors equipped with smaller diameter saws for the initial cut, followed by a second set of arbours with larger diameter saws for the second cut.
As a leader in developing new technology for the primary breakdown sector of the sawmill industry, the HewSaw stand at Ligna in Hannover, Germany is normally a busy place. This year’s Ligna event from May 22 to 26 is not expected to be any different and HewSaw is ready for the occasion. The HewSaw stand at Ligna 2017 will be over 150 square metres (1,600 square feet) and will include a HewSaw cant saw unit complete with the new patent pending HewSaw dx sawing technology, which offers faster feed speeds and a thinner saw kerf. Developed by HewSaw’s engineering department at the company’s factory in Mäntyharju, Finland, the basic principle behind dx-sawing is to replace the standard double

arbour sawing technique currently used by HewSaw with a four arbour system. The first set of arbours will house the saws for an initial or pilot cut in the cant, while the second set of arbours will house a second set of saws that will finish the cut, just as in existing HewSaw sawing technology. This allows for a smaller depth of cut, resulting in thinner kerf saws and faster feed speeds. “When we equip our HewSaw sawing machines and sawlines with this patent pending technology, we can provide our customers with the ability to run larger diameter logs at faster speeds for longer periods of time, and we can reduce our saw kerf, increasing recovery and yield form each log,” explains Raimo Karjalainen, HewSaw’s chief engineer. In addition to the new dx sawing technology, HewSaw staff at the stand will be on hand to talk about the company’s primary breakdown options, including

A
fter several consecutive years of harvester manufacturers focusing in largely on increased power, this year’s review of harvesting technology has return to the more subtle variations suppliers can provide to improve performance and operator comfort. This is not to say manufacturers have ignored power improvements – they certainly haven’t – but the bulk of the larger players such as Volvo, John Deere, Rottne, Tigercat and Komatsu have made their biggest advancements in manoeuvrability, agility and cab comforts and conveniences. The exception to this theme
was mid-tier manufacturer, Logset, which unapologetically pushed ahead with power enhancements for its 12H GTE model. Productivity and uptime are crucial to a healthy bottom line, and the John Deere full portfolio of harvesters has been carefully crafted to get the job done. Powered by John Deere technology and dealer support, the M-Series tracked harvesters and G-Series wheeled harvesters feature new innovations to save operators time and money.

engine (in European models), the 1270G and 1470G harvesters deliver 10% lower fuel consumption from previous models. The increased output is particularly notable in the 1270G 6-wheel machine, which now has the same power as the 1270G 8-wheel machine (200 kW versus 17 kW). The torque has also increased by as much as 17% in the 6-wheel machine and 5% in the 8-wheel machine. Equipped with a completely new control system, the Timbermatic H-16, features userfriendly control modules and wiring harnesses. “The noise level in the G-Model is much lower and the engine runs much more stably even at lower RPMs,” says Frank Mäder, a John Deere customer based in Germany. “The engine has more power and doesn’t stall, not even when processing, driving and boom movements are done at the same time. Also noteworthy is that the boom can be controlled even more accurately than with IT4 machines, thanks to the new CAN design and new controllers.” The Processing Power Control (PPC) system in the 1270G and 1470G harvesters has three different power levels to choose
from based on tree size. The PPC system anticipates the engine load and responds with the right power increase, which in turn improves fuel economy. The cabin of the G-series harvesters is designed to maximize operator comfort. The cabin adjusts automatically to boom movements while the automatic levelling functions absorb terrain changes. This offers significant improvement in machine productivity and reduces vibration by as much as 50% during operation. “The cabin offers a superior operating comfort,” says Janne Sipiläinen, a customer from Finland. “The usability is in a class of its own. The cabin levels itself and rotates automatically towards the direction of the work and with the
boom, so you are always in a good working position.”
1270G harvester The John Deere 1270G consumes significantly less fuel than its predecessor, but boasts even more power. The increased output is particularly large in the 6-wheel machine, which now has the same power as the 8-wheel machine – 200 kW instead of the previous 170 kW. “After the first tree went through, I didn’t miss my old 1270E harvester,” says Roland Salo, also from Finland. “With this machine it’s easier to produce the same cubic meters of wood in a shorter workday than before. This was a good investment.” Additionally, the 1270G features

new control modules and wiring harnesses. The high-quality connectors reduce disruptions and the new modules improve productivity on the jobsite. The combination of the 1270G with the H415 harvesting head has shown notable improvements in harvesting efficiency. And the machine comes with PPC – a simple and easy-to-use solution to balance power and fuel economy in different logging conditions.
1470G harvester The 1470G is the biggest harvester model in the line-up. With many of the popular features found in the 1270G model, the 1470G is equipped with a bigger CH9 boom and a different front frame, tyres and bogie axles. Like the 1270G, operators of the 1470G have praised the machine’s power and torque improvements, citing consistent engine performance without drops in RPMs. The geometric design on the 1470G CH9 boom provides increased stability and offers excellent accuracy and manoeuvrability. The operation of the CH9 boom has been made more efficient with the open loop Twin Pump Hydraulic System, enabling

THE PONSSE SCORPION is the latest member in the range of the world’s leading forest machines. Built without compromises, this harvester raises productivity and ergonomics in harvesting to a whole new level and sets a new standard for the driver’s working environment. OFFERING A FULLY OPEN CABIN VIEW, and unbeatable stability and power, the machine operates bearing the environment in mind and with minimum surface pressure. The revolutionary triple-frame structure ensures a low axis point for levelling, thus making the machine extremely stable and comfortable. Economy and comfort have also been considered in positioning service points. THE EIGHT-WHEEL PONSSE SCORPION HARVESTER offers significantly better levelling of the machine than any of its competing solutions. The axis point of lateral levelling is as low as possible thanks to the triple-frame structure so that the cabin and crane not only remain levelled, but also the sideways movement is minimised. This keeps the balance point of the crane and cabin at the machine’s centre line, improving stability. An intelligent stabilising system follows the position and load of the crane giving support to the machine while working sideways and allowing the driver to work when the machine is moving. INCREDIBLE VISIBILITY and steering, unbeatable stability, excellent performance provided by the double-circuit hydraulics – the PONSSE ScorpionKing offers improved productivity, cost-efficiency and comfort on the most challenging logging sites.

simultaneous movements of boom extensions, head operation, and machine movements. “I think that, all in all, John Deere has been really successful in developing control systems,” continues Tommy Grytegård of Sweden. “It is unbelievable when you consider how many calculations are constantly being made by the harvester during use. “It is really impressive how well all the functions of the new 1470G work together. It really is a topclass machine.”
M-Series harvesters Like the wheeled harvesters, the John Deere M-Series tracked harvesters have been positively received, with customers citing the outstanding productivity, reliability, and durability. Most notably, the larger operator station on all M-series machines features ergonomically designed controls, and large window areas, increasing productivity through improved operator comfort and visibility. “I like the power,” says Mike Ratkowski, a US-based customer from Wisconsin. “The count on the boom power is really nice. “It swings those big trees a
lot easier than a smaller machine would. Increased visibility, increased power, serviceability, uptime – everything is good.” According to the manufacturer, superior tractive effort and improved stability due to a long and wide undercarriage have delivered tremendous productivity gains for customers – particularly in difficult terrains. Additionally, the Rapid Cycle System (RCS) automation feature, which combines automated fellinghead arm cycling with simple boom control, increases cycle times up to 35%.
With its Special Application Solutions team, Volvo Construction Equipment has been continually refining and upgrading its line of tracked forestry carriers developed around its standard excavator models. more power and the hybrid system gave the engine extra boost. “When the machine cuts the trees, that is when it needs the hybrid system. You can actually hear the engine work without any strain even when cutting. The point is to reduce the use of the diesel fuel,” Sjölander explains. The machine also moves very smoothly with its eight wheels, even though the machine weighs 24,500 kg. It’s big size wheels 780/50-28.5 in mean that the machine can also be driven on soft soils.
In the spotlight
“Sturdy trees give way when the Logset 12H GTE Hybrid enters the forest scene,” the company says, only half joking. “It is nicknamed the friendly giant, because it is environmental and astonishingly powerful.” Manufactured in Finland, the Logset 12H GTE Hybrid represents the newest technology within the forestry field. It has a hybrid system with an electrical motor, that delivers “just the right torque boost” to the AGCO Power 7.4 litre engine. So far, the machine model has been sold only in Europe. “The hybrid system means in short that when the machine needs the power the most, the electrical motor steps in automatically,” Logset customer Gerhard Sjölander said. “It gives the maximum effect straight away, which is about 520 HP and a torque of 2,000 Nm.”
Sjölander lives in Sweden and is the owner of a friendly giant. They’ve gotten along well since early December when the unit was delivered. Sjölander has the Logset TH75 harvester head mounted on his machine. “Thanks to the hybrid system the burden on the diesel engine is smaller. I save about 25–30 % diesel fuel,” he says. “When the engine uses less power, the hybrid system is being charged. And of course, when the engine uses more power, the hybrid system kicks in.”
Logset is a small forest machine manufacturer but has not let that get in the way of ambitious equipment design, on the contrary, in fact. Rather, Logset went for broke when it designed this 12H GTE Hybrid, which is the biggest harvester for profitable large-scale harvesting. “We wanted to claim our spot in the forefront,” Logset Export Sales Director Pascal Réty said. “We had the inspiration to develop the biggest harvester for
profitable large-scale harvesting, because we wanted to bring the forestry industry to a new level. “The process took two years, from planning to a ready built product. Now I’m so proud of our guys.” He says this latest harvester invention has it all. It eases the regular work days of loggers, because it is stable, reliable and comfortable to operate. After the machine was released, many asked Réty why Logset wanted to invest in developing the hybrid technology. Some even seemed to think that the forestry field didn’t need it. “Who wouldn’t want to save fuel, if it is possible?” he asked in response. “The advantages with a hybrid system are many. It reacts instantly to the work load. The crane gets an extra boost when it really needs it. The amount of HP in the machine guarantees, that the giant will manage even the hardest tasks.” Currently, Logset doesn’t have a dealer in the US. The company is, however, looking into expanding its dealer network in that part of the world.
Operating the giant Sjölander can see on the computer screen every time the hybrid system is helping the engine. Up on the right-hand corner of the screen, there is a green pole. When Sjölander cuts a tree with the TH75, the green pole is reduced a little. This indicates that the engine used

production while also reducing fuel consumption.
Proven cab and crane concept All the harvesters have parallel cranes with high net lifting force that are fast, effective, and easy to operate. The crane design ensures a more energy efficient crane cycle, compared to the knuckle boom crane. The harvesters are built on the well-proven concept of a centrallyplaced crane and cab and a swing axle that, together with the cab’s tilt cylinders, offers unique stability and operator comfort. The cab enjoys much better upward and downward visibility, 360° of cab/ crane rotation, and low noise levels.
Optimal manoeuvrability
The Komatsu harvester line up with 6WD is the Komatsu 901, which is a thinning specialist, the Komatsu 911, which is an all-round harvester, the Komatsu 931, for demanding final logging, and the Komatsu 951, which is the largest and most powerful harvester, all launched in 2014. In 2016 the Komatsu 931XC was launched, an 8WD harvester
with low ground pressure and great stability – perfect for extreme conditions. Komatsu harvesters have a number of technical attributes that contribute to making the machines powerful, productive and energy efficient.
3PS – powerful hydraulics To ensure that operators have the right conditions for effective production, the harvesters have a

powerful 3-pump hydraulic system. It provides unique interaction between the crane, the head functions, and the transmission and enables the operator to use high flow rates at low engine RPM while the transmission circuit is always available to move the machine. The clever design of the hydraulic system means that the operator can perform several functions at the same time and maintain a considerably higher
“Optimal manoeuvrability in difficult terrain is key for a harvester to be truly productive,” Komatsu stated. The Komatsu harvesters offer several important features when it comes to terrain mobility. One factor is how the engine interacts with the transmission system, which automatically adapts to changes in engine load due to terrain, obstacles and inclines. The system automatically increases torque, and thereby traction, just before the machine reaches maximum capacity. As a result, the harvesters can clear obstacles with considerably greater ease than machines with traditional hydrostatic transmission systems, while fuel consumption is reduced. A crane with high slewing torque and a machine with high ground clearance are equally important for high productivity in steep and difficult terrain. Komatsu harvesters have a unique tilt function that gives the cab and crane a large tilt angle and thereby a high slewing torque in steep terrain. Komatsu Comfort Bogie, with its wellmaintained balance and integrated portals, helps provide very good ground clearance and mobility in rough terrain.
Komatsu 931 XC
Komatsu 931XC – 8WD done right The Komatsu 931XC approaches eight wheels differently than other manufacturers. Naturally, it is built around Komatsu’s unique and well-proven chassis concept with an articulated joint and swing axle, a tilt function for the crane and cab, and Komatsu’s load-sensing stabilizer – a concept that has proven to be effective for several decades. What’s special about the Komatsu 931XC is that the swing axle is replaced with a unique
swing bogie. The new bogie further improves stability with improved ground contact and a lower centre of gravity. The central placement of the crane ensures that the machine’s
weight is evenly distributed between all eight wheels. This, and the fact that the Komatsu 931XC is the lightest harvester in its class, means that it performs outstandingly well on soft ground. “The design provides excellent handling characteristics as the machine follows irregularities in the terrain exceptionally well,” the manufacturer said. “In short, it’s a harvester with low ground pressure, great stability, and good comfort that provides the right conditions for effective production in steep terrain as well as on soft grounds.”
Operator comfort and ergonomics
key factor to operator comfort, this in combination with the machine levelling function Autolev provides a comfortable working environment. The option Autolev Advanced adds cab damping, for even more comfort. The remote-controlled keyless system can control the heating and the main circuit-breaker/ lighting from a distance of up to 300 m (about 1,000 ft). The keyless system is coded by the operator so that when the operator activates the main circuit-breaker they are automatically logged in to MaxiXplorer with the appropriate operator profile.
For Komatsu harvesters, increased emphasis has been placed on operator ergonomics. The machine design with the centrally placed crane and cab means that the operator always has great visibility and doesn’t have to turn his or her head when working, for instance, in thinning operations along narrow access roads. Machine stability is another

The transmission and the hydraulics will also be changed for
better performance. The H11D is a very versatile harvester in terms of its configuration, with six or eight wheels. It is a very flexible harvester for thinning and medium final felling. The high number of options available make it possible to adapt the harvester for different harvesting conditions. Wide tracks front and rear ensure low ground pressure and make the harvester ideal for working on wet ground. The harvester is available with the different heads from the Rottne
EGS596 to the SP 461LF, SP561LF, and now also with Log Max 4000T or 5000D. The H14C is a well proven 6-wheeled harvester for late thinning and final felling with head options EGS596, SP561LF and now also Log Max 5000D. The H21D is a very strong harvester with high capacity developed for heavy final felling and also coping with tough and steep terrain. The H21D has over the past year received some 80 individual upgrades to make it an
even more efficient harvester. The major improvements concern the crane, the hydraulic system and the EGS706 head. The H21D can be ordered as six or eight-wheel drive and the eightwheel version is equipped with balanced bogie and tracks front and rear for a high tractive force (230 kN), perfect in steep terrain. The SP761 LF head makes the H21D better-suited to markets with a lot of hardwood and now the Log Max 6000B or Log Max 7000C provide similar alternatives.

Steep slope harvesting doesn’t have to be uncomfortable for the operator
“In recent years, the increased emphasis on machine ergonomics and the ease of use has been one of the most important changes in the development of harvesting technology,” according to Finnish heavyweight, Ponsse. “Both of these have a high impact on productivity, as the operator is fully able to concentrate on work. Ergonomics and the ease of use have also been starting points for Ponsse’s new model series. All Ponsse machine models have been upgraded and the durability, serviceability and ergonomics of every product were developed significantly. In the new model series, major improvements have been made in the usability and productivity of the machines. At the same time, new engines of the EU Stage IV emissions level in accordance with new environmental regulations were installed in forest machines delivered to Europe. Benefits of the new technology include, along with a cleaner environment, a better machine response to sudden needs of power and lower fuel consumption. In addition, special attention has been paid to the working comfort of the operator in the design of cabin structures. The overhauled cabin design offers
plenty of storage space, the “most ergonomic controls available in the market”, and the excellent visibility characteristic of all Ponsse forest machines. In the new model series, service points are easily accessible. Only products of the highest quality have been selected as components, and the filtration of hydraulic oils has been developed, allowing for a significant increase in machine maintenance intervals. The scheduled maintenance
intervals of machines were extended from 600/1,200 hours to 900/1,800 hours. Over a review period of 10,000 operating hours, the number of scheduled maintenance visits will be reduced by 30%. The extended scheduled maintenance intervals, together with improved serviceability, signify more productive working hours and lower maintenance costs. The Ponsse product range includes both six and eight-wheel harvesters in all size categories
from thinning to heavy-duty regeneration felling. All machine models are designed for a general size category in terms of their size and performance, whereby the work is not narrowly restricted to certain types of work sites due to the equipment. Versatile product solutions allow harvesting of both energy wood and industrial wood productively.

with the loader and crane and also allows the operator to use higher speeds. ActiveFrame has a simple and functional structure, suspending any sideways movement directed at the operator effectively. As a result, working is very comfortable and any stress on the body is much
smaller than before. “The comfort of the operator is a key factor in terms of productivity and quality. When excess swaying does not stress the operator, the operator remains more alert and is able to focus on working, even during longer shifts,” Ponsse stated.

structure, the pivot point of the ActiveFrame suspension system is very low at the level of the bogie axle. This eliminates any swings directed at the operator as efficiently as possible. The maximum angle of levelling in Ergo is seven degrees. “Ponsse is known for its rapid product development based on customers’ needs. We have always allocated our resources to where we can be the best in the world. In developing environmentally friendly, cut-to-length forest machines, we represent the state of the art,” the manufacturer said.

Smoothing the road ahead
No one likes a long commute to work, including contractors, which is why manufacturers are working harder than ever to deliver solutions that make access to the timber stand increasingly easy
T
he money is made for contractors at the stand but getting easy and consistent access to those revenue rich crops is regularly overlooked by operators. In International Forest Industries’ annual review of technology providing access to the timber stand, manufacturers have presented a combination of all-processing units capable of muscling through anything from biomass to plastic to metal offcuts, and higher-specification units that can turn the forest-floor scrub into saleable fibre products.
G-Series forestry swing machines
Dedicated to providing loggers with the machines they need to increase productivity, John Deere offers a full line of equipment for building and maintaining roads to the timber stand. From the new G-Series forestry swing machines to the powerful G-Series excavators and G-Series motor graders, John Deere says it has a full portfolio of equipment to enable operators to quickly complete the task at hand.

head has an 8 ft cutting width and is powered by a pair of variable displacement drive motors.
The Vermeer FT300 forestry tractor with mulcher head gives contractors a powerful machine with the features they need to complete tough land-clearing jobs, according to the manufacturer. “The FT300 mulcher head is a cut above the competition,”
Vermeer said. A ringed rotor design helps guide material to the 23 cutting tips for a cleaner cutting path, while also controlling the depth of cut. To customise cutting performance based on jobsite needs, contractors can choose from sharp planar, clad-faced planar or impact-resistant interchangeable tip options. Also, a patent-pending selfpositioning deflector helps direct thrown material at a consistent angle regardless of head position, helping enhance jobsite safety and allowing the operator to focus on
productivity. The FT300 features a 300 hp (223 kW) Cummins QSL9 diesel engine that meets Tier 4 Final (EU Stage IV) emissions standards. It includes a horsepower ‘bulge’ that allows an increase to 320 hp (238 kW) when the engine drops from 2,200 rpm to 2,000 rpm under load, helping to increase performance and productivity. With a 137 gallon (518.6 litre) fuel tank, the machine has ample fuel capacity to allow the operator to work longer without interruption. The mulcher head hydraulic components are designed to operate below their rated capacity, which helps extend their life and reduce stress on the machine. “Land-clearing work is the first step in timely and expensive projects, such as land development and pipeline installations,” Jeff Bradley, Product Manager for the Recycling and Forestry Segment at Vermeer, said. “The power and features of the FT300 forestry tractor with mulcher head, along with innovations like the self-positioning deflector, helps increase productivity so contractors can more easily meet the stringent deadlines they’re given.” To meet contractors’ jobsite needs, the FT300 offers the flexibility of two track options. The 76.2 cm wide (30 in) single-grouser steel tracks provide superior tractive effort, while 83.8 cm (33 in) low ground pressure (LGP) tracks are ideal when working in soft ground conditions. With all service points accessible from the ground, maintenance is convenient on the FT300. The engine compartment is easily accessible with two large doors that swing open to expose the engine, hydraulic pump, cooling system and other maintenance points. Operator comfort was another top consideration in the design of the FT300. It is equipped with airride seating, ergonomic controls,
optimal sightlines and a rear-view camera. A 17.8 cm (7 in) colour display provides real-time machine performance data to help the operator maximise productivity. The FT300 also accommodates an optional 13,607.8 kg (30,000 lb) rear-mounted winch.
In the competitive land-clearing market, the FT300 forestry tractor with mulcher head offers the features, reliability and support contractors need. “With the demands faced by these contractors, they are looking for an equipment supplier that
stands behind its products and provides machines that are up to the job,” Bradley said. “We know of no competitor in the marketplace that can match the reliability and the quality of service of Vermeer and its independent dealers.”

The tracked carriers in the PT Series sold by the PrimeTech division of the FAE Group can be used for a host of applications: vegetation management, ROW clearing, land conversion, road reclamation, soil stabilization, road construction and maintenance etc. The range now includes five models with working weights
varying from 8-3t with installed power from 160-600 hp, with some versions designed for mine clearing. There are two models in the PrimeTech range of tracked carriers that in the past year have stood out in the marketplace in terms of performance and versatility: the new PT-475 and the ‘compact’ PT-175.
PT-475 “The PT-475 tracked carrier is a purpose-built carrier for superior
Features • A high-level of productivity: integration of the main components of PrimeTech machines, from diesel engine to the hydraulic and electronic systems, guarantees top performance even in the most heavy-duty applications
performance, productivity and serviceability,” the manufacturer said. The unit is powered by a CAT C13 Acert, 12.5 litre turbocharged and aftercooled engine, with six in-line cylinders and 475 hp, which is fuel efficient and available in Tier 3/Stage IIIA and Tier 4/Stage IVA versions. It has a powerful hydraulic system, with Danfoss pumps and motors for track and front attachment drives. The front attachments, made by FAE, provide high-quality operation as well as versatility. PT-475 can indeed be equipped with a variety of front attachments such forestry mulchers, soil stabilizers/
subsoilers and rock crushers. Adapting the carrier is quick and easy so with a relatively modest investment operators can use the machine on different job sites. The oscillating Berco D5HD undercarriage adapts perfectly to uneven surfaces. The track can be fitted with two types of shoes in two different widths – 600 mm (24 in) as standard and 900 mm (36 in) low ground pressure (LGP) version (0.33 kg/cm²). Lower ground pressure also means less wear and tear and a longer working season in wet and swampy areas. The efficient and functional design of PT-475 and the arrangement of its components make all parts easily accessible.
• S turdy undercarriage and low ground pressure: with wide tracks, carriers guarantee stability and adherence on all terrains and at the same time, perform with low ground pressure • R eliable components and easy maintenance: the main components are made by companies such as Caterpillar, Cummins, John Deere, Berco, Danfoss, Bosch Rexroth and Parker • C omfortable, ergonomic cab: the machine designs are tailored to the operator. Among other things, the cab offers plenty of visibility and a high degree of soundproofing; the joysticks are set ergonomically and the display and control panel are easy to use • R emote control model (for PT-175, PT-300 e PT-475): the remote control system allows PrimeTech systems to operate on the steepest or harshest terrains, without obstructing or endangering the operator. 58 International Forest Industries | FEBRUARY 2017 / MARCH 2017
The PT-175 enjoys better connection between undercarriage and main frame
The tiltable ROPS/FOPS/OPS cab, the big side doors and the swingout oil cooler assure excellent access to daily service points, engine and hydraulic filters. Both proportional and reversible fan are available and both guarantee fuel economy and power saving. PT-475 has also been equipped with an oversized engine radiator, allowing the machine to operate in hot climates. The radiator comes with coarse fins, preventing it from getting plugged by dust and dirt and making cleaning easier. “The PT-475 is a powerful tracked carrier and like all PrimeTech models it is characterized by great versatility,” the company stated.
PT-175 forestry mulcher The smallest, lightest vehicle in the PT range, designed for those who work with compact equipment (such as skid steers) but who are on the lookout for a more powerful, productive alternative to extend their working possibilities. It is available with driver’s cab and with radio control. The PT-175 uses a 4-cylinder Cummins Stage IIIA QSB4.5, 4,500 cm3 engine with a maximum power of 123 kW (165 CV) at 2,000 rpm. In 2016, the PT-175 underwent a series of technical improvements that have improved performance further. Remote control: Remote control technology enables PT-175 to operate in dangerous conditions and on steep slopes. It is able to operate uphill, downhill and sideways, without putting the
operator into risky and unsafe situations and avoiding an uncomfortable seating position for the operator. An innovative remote control ensures accurate guidance of the vehicle at a range of up to 1,000 m. All controls and displays the operator would normally see in the cab are on the remote-control unit. Furthermore, the runtime of the batteries is up to 10 hours and the tilting remote control unit can be opened by a manual pump, which allows easy access and inspecting of all components located underneath. Accessible and nimble: The frame redesign looked at making the PT-175 leaner, resulting in a more accessible engine compartment – the internal roll-bar has been removed for a much better access to the engine and related components, the machine has a lighter main frame and improved undercarriage connection, big side doors guarantee easy access and perfect serviceability, and the rear of the frame is hinged and can be opened for efficient radiator maintenance. Undercarriage: An even more important improvement is the new undercarriage: Two upper rollers (previous model had one upper roller only) better guide the track chains, with upper and lower rollers now stronger than the previous ones. Sealed and lubricated track chains provide longer life for chain, pins and bushings, while a wider sprocket and idler avoid twisting and damage to the track chain. The idler has a bigger diameter
The PT-175 is a nimble yet powerful option for forestry professionals and stronger tensioning device, and the lubricated chain with ‘split connection’ allows easier removal and installation of the track chain. The track pad bolt size has been upgraded to M14 (previous M12) for stronger fastening, while an even ‘heavier-duty’ final drive with improved sealing and end cover fastening has been included. And finally, there is better connection of undercarriage and main frame. Radiator and fan: An oversized radiator allows the machine to operate in hot climates, much as
the flagship PT-475. As an option, the PT-175 can be equipped with a proportional (so-called variable pitch) and reversible sucker fan. Based on radiator temperatures (coolant, intercooler and hydraulic oil), the blades automatically adjust their position in the most efficient and effective way. This results in less power absorbed by the fan and lower fuel consumption, as well as less air and dust flow crossing the engine compartment, helping to keep it clean.
New options • Track chain guides to better guide the track chains and to reduce wear • C anopy to avoid built-up of debris and snow on engine compartment • N ew GPS Plus with surface mapping to monitor productivity by measuring mulched surface, overlap, etc. with an accuracy of 0-20 cm (0-8 in).

ENGINES – TIGERCAT
Next generation engines hit US, Europe Knowing new diesel emissions standards were approaching in the United States and Europe, Tigercat undertook a wide-ranging project to update its engine technology to meet the challenge
A
fter an exhaustive technical development programm, Tigercat has introduced Tigercat FPT engines in North America and Europe in 2013. Tigercat FPT engines are equipped with a second-generation common rail fuel injection system, allowing them to achieve top performance in terms of load response, maximum torque and top power with minimum fuel consumption. To date, over 2,800 machines equipped with Tigercat FPT engines have been shipped. Tigercat FPT engines have proven themselves extremely well in the field – with excellent fuel efficiency and great uptime. Power and performance are well matched to the various applications of the machines. Tigercat now administers the warranty, parts and service for the engines meaning more dealer empowerment. The result is increased uptime and a better experience for Tigercat customers. “We all know well that in forestry, lost production is never made up,” Tigercat said. “Our customer service department and the dealer network take machine
uptime very seriously.” Tigercat uses three models of the Tigercat FPT engine to meet different needs – the N45, N67 and C87. The Tigercat FPT N45 engine is a 4.5 liter, four-cylinder workhorse used on the highly successful 234B log loader. One concern operators initially expressed about the use of a fourcylinder engine was the increased risk of vibration and engine noise. The N45 engine solves this problem using a solution found on high-end automobile engines for many years – balancer shafts. These cancel out engine vibrations and make for a quieter, more comfortable work environment for operators and improvements in overall reliability. The majority of Tigercat machines are powered by the Tigercat FPT N67 engine – including drive-to-tree feller bunchers, skidders, forwarders and some track carriers – which results in excellent commonality of spare parts and service across machines. The highly versatile N67 is a 6.7 liter, six-cylinder engine that supports a wide range of torque curves that can be tailored to many
The Tigercat LS855D shovel logger demonstrates the compact footprint of the Tigercat FPT N67 SCR-based after-treatment system
Tigercat forwarders benefit from the reliability and fuel economy of Tigercat FPT engines forestry applications. It provides high-power density for its size, which allowed Tigercat engineers to maximize service access while not sacrificing operator lines of sight over large engine enclosures. Finally, when the highest power and torque are required for machines such as the highperformance LX830D feller buncher, the Tigercat FPT C87 delivers. The C87 is a robust six-cylinder, 8.7 liter engine with top power, fast-load response, high-power density together with the low fuel consumption and
water, nitrogen and carbon dioxide. It does this by injecting Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) into the exhaust stream, which causes a chemical reaction that turns harmful nitrogen oxides (NOx) into carbon dioxide and water. Based on the positive experience, it was a natural progression to begin to add Tigercat FPT Tier 2 engine options to all the latest models. This gives all markets worldwide access to the latest and greatest machines as well as what Tigercat considers to be the best power plant for forestry
The Tigercat FPT N67 engine installation on the 880D logger provides excellent service access as well as plenty of power reliability. The C87 easily handles the demanding duty cycle of the LX830D, which requires fast hydraulic multifunctioning to cope with running the closed-loop drive, levelling base, Tigercat ER boom and disc saw felling head. Tigercat FPT emission technology is simple and reliable, meeting Tier 4f emission standards without the complexities of a variable geometry turbocharger, EGR system or diesel particulate filter. The key is the selective catalyst reduction (SCR), which converts the harmful components of the exhaust gas stream into
and off road industrial applications in the industry. Tigercat has been working hard to train dealer technicians throughout the world. Tigercat is shipping E-series skidders, D-series loaders, C-series forwarders, E-series drive-to-tree feller bunchers, the 875 logger and the various 822D, 845D and 855D carriers to Australia, New Zealand, Russia, South Africa and throughout South America. Tigercat FPT Tier 2 and Tier 4f engines offer fast load response, low operating costs and highpower density, combined with excellent fuel economy.

Speed and safety of each work cycle is further increased by the machine’s superb stability, which permits fast ground speeds when travelling with a load. With an operating weight of 34 t, the L180H HL features a powerful, 13 litre, 6-cylinder Volvo engine developing 246 kW/334 hp and fully compliant with the latest Tier 4 Final/Stage lV emissions regulations, but is also available as Stage lllA for lesser regulated markets. Possibly the industry’s most effective workspace, the Volvo Care Cab offers space, a high level of comfort, ergonomically positioned controls to reduce operator fatigue and is ROPS/FOPS certified. Visibility – forward, lateral and rear – is excellent, thanks to a large expanse of glass and the slopeaway engine hood design. A choice of grapples, from 3.2-3.8 m3 , allows the L180H HL to handle up to a massive 8,800 kg working load with ease, with a height under the grapple of 5 800 mm. The grapple’s tilt rotator unit enables it to be positioned very
precisely to get the safest and most effective approach to the logs, which facilitates placing or picking up logs from the middle of the stack. An integrated damping function in the grapple-tilt cylinder effectively counteracts swaying and provides better control of the load; especially useful when operating on uneven terrain. To ensure efficient, profitable operation, the L180H HL is loaded with productivity enhancing and fuel-saving features. Volvo’s unique OptiShift technology combines the company’s patented Reverse by Braking (RBB) technology and a torque converter with lock-up. Lock-up creates a direct drive between the engine and transmission – eliminating power losses in the torque converter and reducing fuel consumption by up to 18%. Sensing the loader’s change in direction, the RBB function slows the machine by automatically applying the service brakes, increasing fuel efficiency as well as operator comfort and is ideal for short cycle or truck loading applications. The L180H HL’s Boom Suspension System (BSS) boosts productivity by up to 20% by absorbing shock and reducing the bouncing that occurs when operating on rough ground. This enables faster and more comfortable work cycles while also reducing stress on the drivetrain, extending component life. Should the accelerator be used excessively, risking rpm exceeding the most economic operating range, Volvo’s unique Eco pedal provides a further fuel consumption reducing benefit by applying mechanical push-back force, encouraging – training even – the operator to ease off the throttle. With safety never underestimated, an optional fire suppression system, consisting of up to 16 nozzles, is automatically activated inside the engine compartment should excessive heat is detected. While the L180H HL may be unique; Volvo’s standard wheel loaders remain an ever-popular
sight in stockyards. The latest H-Series models – L150H, L180H and L220H – provide between them a range of seven unloading grapples from 3.1-4 m3 with grapple lengths from 2,660 mm to 3,200 mm depending on the model. Eight sorting grapples are also available in the same dimensions. In addition to key features they share with the L180H HL, these models feature Volvo’s unique Torque Parallel (TP) linkage, delivering high breakout force and excellent parallel movement throughout the entire lifting range. Volvo’s larger models – L250H and L350F – are also used in wood handling applications. L350F units destined for heavyweight logging work feature a heavier rear counterweight for increased stability, additional grease lines and reversal of the bell crank to generate a higher breakout force. For all Volvo H-Series wheel loaders, ease of service is assured thanks to the latest design, electrically activated, wide-opening engine hood that allows quick and easy service access to the engine compartment and components. Maximum uptime for maximum productivity and profitable operation.
In the forest A result of Volvo’s Special Application Solutions team, the latest, excavator-based EC220E, EC250E, EC300E and EC380E tracked carriers are built and specially adapted for the toughest of forestry environments. The EC250E is available in log loader version, featuring a dedicated, straight log loader boom and log loader arm. When equipped with a heavy-duty boom and arm, high-lift boom riser and rotating grapple, all Volvo’s latest tracked forestry carriers can also load and unload with ease. The boom riser allows for an additional lift height of 1,635 mm, facilitating accurate placement of logs when stacking. When not engaged in loading/unloading, these ‘multi-taskers’ can tackle many applications – stump harvesting, trenching, planting and building forest roads. Capable of high productivity,

and highly fuel efficient with their powerful Stage lV/Tier 4 final engines, these tracked forestry carriers are also very competitively priced when compared with fully dedicated forest machinery. Stage lllA, D-Series models are also available for less regulated markets. Nothing is left to chance when it comes to machine and operator protection and safety. The specially designed, forestry cab is approved to OSHA, WCB, SAE and ISO standards. The cab offers a high level of comfort, space, ergonomic controls for easy controllability, excellent visibility and low in-cab noise; a factor much appreciated by operators. It is offered with a 200 mm or 325 mm cab riser, additional emergency exits, 32 mm Lexgard for the front and top windows, gas spring doors and eight LED lights to meet global safety standards. Both front and side-mounted cameras are also fitted and a 300 mm catwalk running along both sides facilitates safe access to both the cab and super structure. A high and wide undercarriage provides increased stability and improved ground clearance for better machine protection, with thicker steel plates protecting the under-belly, using countersunk bolts to protect them too from damage. Further protection comes from full length track guards, stronger, 6 mm engine hood and side panels, reinforced fuel 64 International Forest Industries | FEBRUARY 2017 / MARCH 2017
and hydraulic tanks, swing ring protection against the ingress of debris and protection for the boom cylinder. Developed around standard excavators, these machines allow the same ease of service access for which Volvo excavators are renowned, maximizing uptime.

EPSILON TIMBER & RECYCLING CRANES
A major investment in the centre of Salzburg, Austria, in 2015 delivered several innovation highlights for Palfinger Epsilon in 2016. Employee numbers increased substantially, especially in research, design and sales, thereby laying the groundwork for further expansion in 2017, while another sales record was celebrated – more than 3,000 cranes left the Salzburg factory destined for use all over the world. However, this desire to break new ground does not mean that existing customers and partners have been neglected. Services for dealers have been in particular focus for development, with new approaches being formulated for end-customer training.
Innovation customers can really feel “It’s essential for Palfinger Epsilon that innovations not only work in laboratory conditions but in the field,” the manufacturer stated. “Innovations need to resonate with customers and prove themselves daily in practical timber and recycling applications.” The first independent crane test for timber-loader cranes in Central Europe by German specialist magazine Forst & Technik was proof of concept for the M series of the current Next EPSOLUTION range, launched in 2015. Particularly “in terms of operator-friendliness and ergonomics”, the Epsilon M12Z (featuring Master Drive control) is really in a different league from its competitors”, Forst & Technik noted in its review. Further ground-breaking

innovations were showcased last year, including the new Classic Drive control unveiled at KWF. The highlight is that the current Epsilon M-series can be combined with the Classic Drive to produce what’s currently the lightest crane in the 10–13 mt lifting class. This was achieved using high-strength steels and stateof-the-art, computer-generated structural-force calculations. To ensure all components deliver consistently high quality and a long service life, an average of 80% of all steel components in every crane are produced directly in Palfinger factories. Because the drivers’ ascent to the crane seat remains one of the most common causes of accidents in the industry, Epsilon has developed a new idea here, too – the first-ever height-adjustable side mounted seat for timber
loader cranes. Drivers no longer have to climb up a ladder to reach the control stand. Epsilon’s new side seat allows drivers to comfortably access the seat and then ‘levitate’ hydraulically up to the working position at the touch of a button. The tried-and-tested, multi-awardwinning advantages of the Master Drive control stand (e.g. hydraulic servo control), of course, remain unchanged.
Innovations by customer specification Epsilon is also driving forward the field of customer-specific innovation. For example, an ultrastrong, lightweight processor crane was specially developed for cable yarding technology for MM Forsttechnik, Austria’s largest private forestry company specialising in steep terrain timber

hauling. The logging crane with a net slewing torque of around 50 kNm delivers a reach of 9.4 m and a lifting torque of 229 kNm at 250 bar working pressure. At its maximum reach, a sizeable weight of 2,325 kg can be hung from the crane boom tip. A longstanding partnership was also formed with Rottne Industrie, one of the world’s biggest CTL (cut-to-length) timber machinery manufacturers. At the launch of the new F11D forwarder, Rottne announced that the Rottne RK85 and RK125 double-telescope cranes would now be fitted with telescopic booms from the Austrian manufacturer. For Rottne, the reasons for this decision are obvious: “Epsilon has impressed us with its extremely high quality … alongside with delivery reliability and innovative
prowess. Even in the toughest conditions, the stability and service life of the Epsilon double-telescope
“It’s not enough to break new ground in the timber haulage industry with products alone – we’re also developing new ideas for serviceability and customer proximity,” Epsilon stated. Epsilon employees do not shy away from even the harshest operating conditions, as the service team demonstrated during a training tour in Finland. The maintenance conditions for these special local requirements were discussed and demonstrated in extreme temperatures as low as -31°C. The experiences gained here are already being incorporated in series developments to benefit all users. To provide customers with
expertise, tips and tricks for practical applications involving the timber loader cranes, Epsilon is actively supporting MAN’s Profi Drive Training, which is going on tour in 2017. Using the customer’s own equipment to provide the bestpossible preparation for everyday work, the new training program aims to instruct participants in specific areas including costeffectiveness, driving safety and load securing. The first segment-specific training was held on November 18 last year at the MAN Truck & Bus testing ground in Munich for hauliers from UPM. Palfinger Epsilon also took part with its own practical training program. The company will continue to seek “practical innovations and superior quality” in manufacturing in 2017.

Moving and storing timber around sawmills, lumber yards and processing plants can be made more efficient and safer if the handling equipment used is 100% fit for purpose, particularly in light of the fact that conditions are tough and many of the loads in question are long, unwieldy and potentially dangerous, according to Irish specialist forklift manufacturer Combilift. The company launched the world’s first ic engine powered, allwheel drive multidirectional forklift – the Combilift C4000 – in 1998, which was specifically designed for the safe, space saving and more productive handling and storage of long and bulky loads in confined spaces. It has sold over 35,500 units of its now diverse portfolio, which are exported to more than 75 countries. The timber sector was one of the first to recognise the benefits of Combilift’s innovative and customised products and thousands are in operation for familiar names such as Weyerhaeuser, Boise, Stora Enso, Tolko, Sierra Pacific and many others. A major advantage of the multidirectional truck concept is the ability to travel sideways in narrow spaces with long loads resting on the truck’s platform and the extreme manoeuvrability and safety that this provides. Trying to move 5 m, 10 m or longer lengths of timber with conventional trucks such as counterbalance forklifts is problematic to say the least and also requires large areas to be set aside for manoeuvring. This was one of the key reasons that prompted Weyerhaeuser to phase out so-called conventional forklifts and switch to Combilift fleets at its sites in North America, where around 225 models with lift capacities from 4 t to 10 t are in operation. All the trucks were custom built to accord with Weyerhaeuser’s specifications to enable straightforward handling of the most extreme loads which can be 20 m long. They also play a key role in the company’s commitment to the safest possible materials
handling procedures. A host of features to make life more comfortable for operators were integrated into the Weyerhaeuser trucks such as a roomy operator cab, containers for tools fixed to the body of the truck and an integrated side shifting mast which enables various dimensions of product to be easily picked up. A recent development is Combilift’s new 4-wheeled, two directional sideloader (4WSL) which is ideal for operations that require reliable, robust and fast operation when moving timber across extensive sites. Overheating during prolonged operation is a common problem with many sideloaders but Combilift has counteracted any risk of this by incorporating a single Bosch Rexroth variable piston hydrostatic drive motor coupled with a rugged and proven JCB differential axle as used on the JCB 3CX backhoe model. This also provides excellent traction to the rear wheels which is advantageous when negotiating gradients. The new design of the 4WSL features a fully glazed front cab panel and the engine is situated in a low-level compartment underneath the platform, both of which contribute to excellent visibility. “Whether you handle extreme lengths of lumber, engineered timber, timber frames, palletised goods or a mix of products, there is a Combilift model that can deliver the goods,” said MD Martin McVicar. “Since we launched our first C4000 Combilift, which is still one of our best sellers, we now offer models from 1.5t upwards with an almost infinite choice of options. Our range encompasses 4-way sideloaders, stand-on trucks for extremely narrow aisle operation, pedestrian operated stackers, the large cab XL series and straddle carriers for containers and oversized loads. “Our products are designed to be tough workhorses which operate inside and out in all weather conditions. We use standard and easily sourced components to make service and maintenance very straightforward

It is more than double the size
of both current plants and will house a dedicated R&D building, purpose built testing areas as well as administrative offices. This expansion will position Combilift to double its current output and turnover in the next five years.
Two Sennebogen 730 machines work at the log yard at Barthel Pauls Söhne AG in Halconreux, Belgium A passion for wood since 1921, Barthel Pauls Söhne AG with two new Sennebogen 730 E machines Barthel Pauls Söhne from Halconreux, Belgium has relied on wood as a sustainable raw material for more than 95 years – with great success. With two new Sennebogen 730 material handlers in the log yard, the copmany’s machine park is now state of the art and equipped for the future. Now in the third generation, the family-owned company Barthel Pauls Söhne processes around 300,000 m3 of wood annually, which mostly comes from the Belgian region of Upper Ardennes and the Upper Eifel in Germany. Strategically well located in the border region of Belgium and Germany, the company invested in a new sawmill in 2013. Since mid-2016, two modern Sennebogen material handlers have now also been working in the log yard for the first time in pick & carry operation. The two 730 machines of the current E-series, which were supplied by the sales and service partner VCM Cramat (who also services them), are above all used to remove long and short logs from the sorting line. The truck unloading and logistics in the log yard are also performed using a trailer that can be pulled by the 730. This solution allows three further grapple loads to be transported in one train, in addition to the material in the 1.75
m² log grapple. This not only reduces the driving distance but also results in advantageous fuel savings and

With a wide product range from construction timber to glued laminated timber and nail plates, Barthel Pauls Söhne supplies customers throughout Europe. When the new material handlers were procured, a special challenge was the sometimes narrow passages and the necessity of working safely along a railway line. Thanks to the continuously swivelling upper-carriage of the 730, the logs can be manipulated parallel to the installations and railcars – an important decision criterion. With a track width of only 3.3 m and all-wheel drive, the 730 not only has especially compact dimensions but is also extremely flexible in manoeuvring. Operations manager Johannes Kroiss explains the advantages of the machine: “The 730 is the ideal combination of a compact machine with a high load capacity and optimum performance features. In particular, the rear hinged boom ensures optimum stability during
work and driving and provides a good view during manoeuvring.” The Maxcab comfort cab, which is raised 1.5 m, offers the operator an ideal overview of the work area. As a standard feature, a strong protective grating protects the operator and cab against any damage. The machine itself is equipped with a powerful 168 kW diesel engine with Tier 4f emission standards. The Sennebogen material handler is characterized by a sturdy construction and an upper-carriage that can be continuously swivelled with up to 7 rpm. A strong travel drive with all-wheel steering and automatic detection of the driving and steering direction make the 730 the perfect helper in the log yard. “The Sennebogen 730 stands firmly and steadily even with a full load; with the additional shovel plate, the machine can be supported even better and safely move even long logs,” Kroiss said.

Economy at scale
Engines don’t have to be small to show maximum efficiency
I
n today’s challenging climate, efficiency and uptime are vital to staying competitive. In order to meet the needs of customers, John Deere has made a dedicated effort to provide customers with reliable equipment equipped with innovative features. This was evident in the G-Series Harvesters, which were launched in Europe in October 2015 and in North America last April, and the new G-Series mid-size Forwarders. Consisting of three models – the 1270G six-wheel, 1270G eightwheel and 1470G – the G-Series models were designed based on customer feedback to produce a powerful and efficient machines ideal for all types of terrains. One of the most notable features on the new machines are the updated control systems, including the Processing Power Control (PPC) and TimberMatic H-16 control systems, which improve operator efficiency, precision and controllability. Operators are noting the changes, with 1470G Harvester

owner and operator Tommy Grytegård, LT Skogsavverkniing AB, noting, “John Deere has been really successful in developing control systems. It is really impressive how well all the functions of the 1470G work together.” The mid-size G-Series Forwarders, including the 1110G, 1210G and 1510G models, are equipped with the TimberMatic F-16 control system, featuring a configurable user interface, cruise control and inclination display. The addition of the TimberMatic F-16 system improves operational reliability.
Processing Power Control (PPC) System In the woods, it is vital for operators to optimize machines to best handle the job at hand. The innovative PPC system on the 1270G and 1470G harvesters enables operators to select between three different power levels, choosing the most suitable level based on the tree size,
optimizing fuel economy. To utilize the PPC system, the operator selects one of three options – Energy Saving, Normal or Boost Mode – and the system does the rest of the work. Energy Saving Mode minimizes fuel consumption for smaller stems that do not require maximum power. Normal mode, the machine default setting,
Engines, Simulators and Control Systems – JOHN DEERE
optimizes machine performance and fuel economy. For the extreme conditions, Boost Mode produces the maximum performance, which is beneficial when dealing with very large or challenge stems. Once engaged, the PPC system meters hydraulic flow to the head, anticipating the engine load and responding with the right power increase, which in turn improves both fuel economy and productivity.
TimberMatic H-16 Control System Another key innovation on the G-Series machines is the TimberMatic H-16 control system. The TimberMatic H-16 system includes everything needed for base machine control and monitoring, measuring and bucking in one configurable user interface, improving operator efficiency. Several pressure sensors have been added to the system, enabling operators to adjust most settings from inside the cab without needing tools. The pressure sensors make machine adjustments and monitor the conditions to key parts, including the work and transmission pump pressures, delimbing knives and feed-roller arms, all through the machine’s onboard PC. Frank Mäder, one of the first contractors to test the 1270G machines in Germany, noted, “the boom can be controlled even more accurately thanks to the new CAN design and new controllers.” Another benefit of the TimberMatic H-16 control system is the robust CAN bus with fewer connectors and improved diagnostics to ensure reliability. Next generation MECA control modules improve speed and precision, increasing the power and efficiency of the base machine control system. The processor speed and the CAN speed
improvements increases the boom precision. The MECA control improvements also let the operator quickly identify the location of the error in the CAN bus system. Through the display, when an error occurs, an icon appears on the screen, enabling the operator to see the fault location, allowing for easy identification and repair.
the base machine. As logging operations are asked to increase efficiency, control systems, such as the PPC, TimberMatic H-16, and TimberMatic F-16 systems, are invaluable was to simplify operation. When combined with other innovative solutions, like JDLink, which
provides owners with vital data, including machine performance, fuel consumption and engine load, forestry professionals can better understand their businesses and make the necessary adjustments to improve machine productivity and overall profitability.
TimberMatic F-16 Control System Designed to further develop and improve operation, the TimberMatic F-16 control system on the new G-Series Forwarders includes a configurable user interface. The new software version enables service personnel remote access to the machine. This enables faster troubleshooting by service people, improving machine uptime. New control modules, simple CAN busses and a streamlined electrical system improve the efficiency of machine functions. The new control modules simplify the electrical system and bring added processing capacity. The G-Series Forwarders have three modules, one for the cabin, the front frame and the rear frame. Additionally, the troubleshooting diagnostics on the TimberMatic F-16 system are more detailed and illustrative. The CAN bus increases reliability of the electrical system with simple, fewer connections, a dedicated bus for the engine and

2013 John Deere 843K Feller buncher at Forestry First 05-02-13
This 2013 model Deere 843K is working in Pine Plantation. We filmed this cutter working on a second thinning job where the stems are 6 inches or so average, many less. This feller buncher is very impressive. The owner has been pleased with fuel consumption and the speed and power of this feller buncher is more than adequate in his thinning and logging operations. The operators are also making positive comments about the cab interior which has recently been much improved. The old steering column is gone and it opens everything up in terms of visibility and space for your legs. If you have not sat in one of these you should do yourself a favour and hop into one.

RAYCO C260 Mulching
The C260 is a mid-sized mulcher that delivers 260 hp in a compact, low ground pressure package. This mulcher is suited for clearing small trees, underbrush, and a variety of unwanted vegetation across a wide range of environments. The heavy-duty steel undercarriage and powerful final drives allow operators to tackle difficult terrain with confidence. Rayco’s exclusive elevated cooling design keeps engine and hydraulic temperatures within their limits in the harshest of environments. To minimize maintenance, a reversing fan can be activated from the cab to clear the limbriser debris screens. This helps to extend service intervals even when operating in hot, debrisfilled environments. When manual cleaning of the debris screens is necessary, they are easily removable and the rear door opens to allow unrestricted access to the debris screen and engine radiator. The cabs are climate controlled and sealed from dust and debris to maintain operator comfort. Operators appreciate the high-backed, heated seat with adjustable armrests and air-ride suspension. For safety, the cab is certified to meet ROPS, FOPS, and OPS specifications and is equipped with a roof-top escape hatch. LED lighting facing front, sides and rearward. A backup camera enhances rearward visibility.

Doppstadt Expo 2015 - a Bird’s-eye View
50 years of Doppstadt: More than 5,000 guests from the environmental and recycling sector experienced two unforgettable days: on 24 and 25 June 2015. Environmental technology company Doppstadt staged what was arguably the largest European trade show of 2015 in this field on its 220,000 sq.-metre works site (Saxony-Anhalt). On show were over one hundred machines for the shredding, sorting and treatment of waste and biomass. What was unique thereby
was that more than half of the machines could be seen in action. In two-hour live demonstrations, the guests saw how coarse shredders, screening machines and exact hackers shredded tree trunks into sawdust, separated waste from recyclables and sorted pebbles from sand heaps. In doing so, Doppstadt demonstrated its problem-solving skills through combined processes: material collected by machines was initially shredded, then separated into its various components by means of separation processes such as screening, washing or air separation.

6-Deck Jet Veneer Dryer - time lapse construction
Murray Timber 4-sided canting log breakdown line
This new 6-deck jet veneer dryer, located at Martco, Chopin, LA, is the largest dryer to date in the southern yellow pine region. This dryer will accomplish the equivalent production of two dryers, reducing labor costs by one-half. At the same time it will reduce thermal energy consumption by 10%, and exhaust fugitive emissions by 15%.
This mill is located in Ireland.
The dryer was erected off-line, and once complete it was towed into place and connected to all services under a projected expedited schedule. This allowed Martco the advantage of choosing the optimum time to disrupt its production schedule to install the additional capacity, and allowed the plant to utilize the existing building structure to house the new dryer.
