For sawmillers or forestry groups, that statement will relate to different events. Chronologically, we’re talking about Ligna 2023, which is about kick off in Hannover, Germany (May 15-19). The Ligna wood industries show has become an industry institution over almost 40 years and has grown into the crucial meeting place for European wood producers and just about anyone looking to establish themselves in the European market.
release of which is likely to have been timed to coincide with these massive industry events; while forestry companies will be both excited at the range of new machines to choose from and determined to make the right purchase decision for the business.

This year, the range of activity will include conferencing, lectures and discussions covering topical industry trends. And while these events will no doubt be well attended and prove to be exceptionally interesting – as they have in past years – the real action will take place in the exhibition halls and out in the exhibiting lots – where the latest technologies will be put through their paces in front of potential clients. That’s where we will be stalking manufacturers to glean an insight into breakthrough technologies that may make wood production more profitable and could change the way the industry operates.
This northern summer represents a crucial period for the forestry industry during which order books need to be bolstered and sawmills/harvesting fleets need to be equipped to handle the volatile market conditions we’re currently enduring. For our part, we will do our best to make sure our readers continue to be kept abreast of the latest machinery developments so they are able to make informed decisions. With the huge volume of new equipment being released onto the market, this will provide a challenge for us. That challenge has already started with our team working overtime to produce the current edition and Digital edition – our biggest ever – in time for the show season.

Central to these technologies is likely to be AI. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has triggered the start of a major revolution in the wood processing industry. AI is here to stay, and we can already notice its presence more often in various areas of sawmills and planer mills. We are carrying many articles on AI and the theme will be ever present at Ligna.

Ponsse’s 19,000th forest machine completed at Vieremä factory
On 17 February, the 19,000th PONSSE forest machine was handed over to Scottish long-term customer Elliot Henderson Ltd, with the Royal Burgh of Annan Pipe Band playing in the background. The PONSSE Scorpion Giant harvester with H8 harvester head will work at logging sites in the Scottish Borders and Scottish Lowlands.
“Thank you to the Elliot Henderson group and the Royal Burgh of Annan Pipe Band for coming to Vieremä to celebrate the 19,000th machine milestone with us. I understand this is the first time a pipe band has played at Vieremä village, which makes this day even more special for all of us, as this is Ponsse UK’s first milestone machine. This is a day that we will remember for years to come,” says Gary Glendinning, Managing Director Ponsse UK.
Elliot Henderson Ltd
Elliot Henderson Ltd is based in Selkirk in Scotland. The company started more than 35 years ago, planting trees with a small squad of men. Over the years, the business has grown and diversified into forestry, construction, and scaffolding. Today, Elliot Henderson Ltd comprises more than 40 forest machines which can undertake clear fell, thinning, steep ground harvesting operations, ground preparation or the construction of forest roads. Elliot Henderson Ltd also has the capability for site brash clearance, stump removal and servicing the biomass industry. The company is also a founding member of the Forest Industry Safety Accord and is a member of the Forestry Contractors Association.
With Elliot Henderson Ltd being a long-standing customer for well over 20 years, it’s a fitting tribute to the relationship between the
customer and manufacturer that the landmark 19,000th machine is joining the fleet.
“Elliot Henderson Ltd has always been at the forefront of new machine releases over the years, which in turn keeps the harvesting fleet productive and at the vanguard of innovation. We are excited to be adding this Scorpion Giant to the fleet. This machine will go straight to work in the windblow resulting from Storm Arwen and we feel the extra power and H8 head will benefit us in this application. We look forward to seeing what it can do! We are currently running PONSSE Scorpion, Ergo, three Elephants and one Buffalo.” says Neil Purves, Director of Harvesting for Elliot Henderson Group.
Ponsse UK
Ponsse UK was established in 1996, and since 2017, the company has operated at Annan, Scotland. The first PONSSE forest machine was already delivered to the country in 1994, and the fleet now comprises nearly 400 Ponsse machines. The Annan service centre is a workplace for about 30 Ponsse professionals.

Peterson horizontal grinder from Astec suits land clearing and other uses requiring mobility
The new Peterson 5710E horizontal grinder from Astec Industries is suited for land clearing operations or other applications where mobility is desired. The horizontal grinder is equipped with several features designed to improve efficiency and help operators reduce material handling costs.
The 5710E features a larger rotor that can accommodate a greater number of grinding bits. The new rotor is 8 percent larger and 19 percent heavier than the previous model, giving it more grinding power. To keep up with this improved power, the screening area has also been increased, to allow for greater throughput. Additionally, the grate change process has been simplified. While weight and size have been increased where it counts, the machine is lighter
overall. The redesign has been used to maximize efficiency and simplicity throughout the grinding process. This has been applied from the rotor to the
New Niche Skidder
The Tigercat 612 series skidder platform was created to manage the extraction function in challenging terrain selective felling applications, while preserving the value and quality of the residual stand. The machine can be equipped with a dual winch, a movable back shield and fairlead
system, as well as a crane, and front blade tongs.
The 612 is equipped with the Tigercat FPT N67 Stage V engine, delivering 155 kW (208 hp). Combined with Tigercat’s efficient drive system, the 612 impressively handles adverse terrain while minimizing wheel spin.
screens, as well as in the new compression roll cylinders, which offer better downforce to help process material being fed into the rotor.
A narrow stance allows easy navigation through tight trails and rough ground conditions. The movable shield can be used as an anchor while winching. The dual winch and moving fairlead system allow the operator independent control over two separate cables when operating in
tight stand conditions. The optional heavy-duty crane and blade tongs offer even more versatility for extracting, maneuvering and sorting logs.
The operator’s cab is spacious with generous sized windows providing clear sightlines. Creature comforts include a climate-controlled cup holder and dedicated storage. Key to ergonomics and operating the machine effectively is the Turnaround seat. Turnaround provides increased comfort, clear sightlines, and easy entry and exit from either side of the machine. The operator enjoys full control of all machine functions in any position within the 220° range.

Morbark debuted new horizontal grinder at CONEXPO 2023
Morbark, Rayco, Denis Cimaf, Boxer, and Timberwolf showcased new equipment at shared booth
Morbark, LLC debuted the next-generation 6400XT Wood Hog horizontal grinder with a transport system at CONEXPOCON/AGG 2023. Other new equipment offerings included a Denis Cimaf open-face carbide mulching attachment and a Timberwolf TW 280HB HYBRID brush chipper.
The Morbark transport dolly for the next-generation 6400XT was developed to simplify how users transport the machine. Equipped with an independent air-ride suspension and remote-controlled front and rear hydraulic locks, a single operator can attach the transport dolly in minutes, eliminating the need for a specialized Low-Boy trailer. In addition to the new transport dolly system, the 6400XT has undergone a few other updates:
• Enhanced frame design allows for transport dolly attachment while keeping machine width to three metres providing uniformity for both domestic and other global markets
• Automatic hammermill drivebelt tension system
• PT Tech hydraulic torque limiter provides driveline protection while allowing ease of setting adjustments based on grinding application.
Denis Cimaf, an affiliated Morbark brand, have introduced a new line of openface, carbide tip mulching
heads for dedicated carriers, skid steers, and excavators known as the Denis Cimaf DX series of mulching heads.
The DX features carbide teeth that rip through hard and soft wood up to eight inches in diameter. The DX is ideal for tackling mulching or brush clearing with power and hammer-style force. In addition, it is well-suited for land clearing, vegetation management, and utility and roadside maintenance in unknown or rocky terrain.
Timberwolf joined Morbark at CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2023 and showcased the TW 280HB HYBRID brush chipper.
The Timberwolf TW 280HB HYBRID was developed to meet the growing industry trend toward more sustainable solutions. With a processing throughput of over seven tonnes/hr, the TW 280HB HYBRID offers a maximum
power of 62 horsepower but only 25 horsepower enginelevel emissions. Simple to maintain, the TW 280HB is ideal for companies and organizations committed to minimizing their emissions without compromising performance.
Supplementing engine generation power is a power-dense hybrid system. An Inmotion generator synchronous motor (GSM) and energy-efficient SECH supercapacitors are integral to this system. Providing swift recharge capability, in contrast to lithium-ion batteries, supercapacitors store and release energy quickly, coping with the variable duty cycle of the arborist’s job. Furthermore, this is integrated into a selfsupported system that does not need external charging to operate. As the arborist’s working environment is
continuously changing and the work schedule is often long, the TW 280HB HYBRID will perform throughout the day.
“Balancing performance and emissions was a challenge that could not be met by simply dialing down engine sizes,” explains Guy Marshlain, sales and marketing director for Timberwolf. “Therefore, our journey towards net zero began with the decision for Timberwolf to lead its own hybrid powertrain development program. The TW 280HB HYBRID is simply the first step in using our technical expertise to meet the sustainability challenges of the future. There is certainly more to follow.”
Also, in the Morbark booth was the tried-and-true Morbark 3000XT Wood Hog horizontal grinder and the 1821 and 1415 brush chippers. From Rayco, the C120 forestry mulcher, 4000AWL articulated wheel loader, and RG80 stump cutter. From Timberwolf, the TW 230HB brush chipper and from Boxer the 600HD mini-skid steer.

Swedish Wood is shaping the hardwood industry of the future - forming a new committee for hardwood sawmills
Demand for Swedish wood is increasing from the country’s furniture and interior design producers. Today, the majority of the wood that domestic companies use for production is imported, which is challenging both from a logistical and sustainability perspective. The industry organization Swedish Wood sees great opportunities with wood products from the country’s hardwoods and forms the first committee to represent Swedish hardwood sawmills.
- By bringing together sawmills for hardwood, we strive to create dialogue and conditions for a long-term and sustainable hardwood industry. We see great potential in using more hardwood from Swedish forests and promoting that development is the purpose of the committee, says Björn Nordin, head of architecture and design at Svenskt Trä and responsible for the new Hardwood Sawmill Committee.
The timber volume of the trees in the Swedish forest consists of 20 percent hardwoods and 40 percent each of spruce and pine, according to figures from the Forest Industries. Despite that, the share of Swedish
hardwood in domestic furniture and interior design products is marginal, and this is also the case for construction materials in the construction industry. Dependence on the outside world makes the industry vulnerable to, for example, price changes, an uncertain supply of raw materials and difficult supply chains. At the same time, consumers increasingly want to know which wood is used in the products they buy. Many actors are facing increased demands on resource efficiency, traceability and circular flows, and here hardwood can be an enabler.
- We want to increase interest in the Swedish hardwood forest as there is great potential to refine more hardwood. To be able to do it together with an industry organization such as Svenskt Trä and other actors in the industry feels very good. It gives greater weight when we jointly spread knowledge about the benefits and possibilities of Swedish hardwood, says Johan Ingvarsson, CEO of KG List, one of the companies that is part of the committee.
According to the Norwegian Forestry Agency’s analysis
of future forestry, SKA 22, deciduous trees will also play an important role for the forestry industry going forward. A continued high pressure on wood products will require an increased use of hardwood, according to the analysis, and further emphasizes that more hardwood trees can contribute to biological diversity and promote a diversification of Swedish forests.
- The construction industry is also showing an increased interest in hardwood products and there is a demand for research projects around the use of hardwood for construction purposes. Promoting research in both the furniture and construction industries will therefore be an important issue for the Hardwood Sawmill Committee. As a first step, Svenskt Trä represented the hardwood sawmills during an industry seminar in Nässjö where the future hardwood industry was on the agenda, says Björn Nordin.
More information
In addition to Svenskt Trä, the Lövträ sawmill committee is represented by the following companies: KG List, Vanhälls Björkså, Specialträ, Kährs and
Billingsfors Lövträ.
Svenskt Trä’s coordination of the hardwood sawmills is part of the work to promote the conditions for a sustainable and long-term use of wood products in Sweden. Resource efficiency, traceability, circular flows and local raw material supply are important focus areas that are part of the trade association’s various projects.

Holmen invests in a new drying plant at Iggesund Sawmill
Iggesund Sawmill has been further modernised to allow for an increase in production. Holmen has invested SEK 70 million in a new drying plant which increases its drying capacity from 400 000 to 500 000 m3.
The new drying plant is what is known as a tunnel dryer. It is much more energy efficient than the old kiln dryers which it will partly replace. The greater drying capacity is primarily used for dried wood products for the joinery industry.
In addition to investing in new dryers, the group had previously agreed to invest in land for timber storage and warehouse space. As a result, Holmen is taking advantage of the new local plan that was adopted many years ago and has started to prepare for the expansion by increasing the land around the sawmill.
After a 10-hectare expansion, the sawmill will cover a total surface area of 40 hectares. In the longer term, Holmen is looking at the possibility of expanding the sawmill with finishing options, in particular in the form of a planing mill.
“The group has shown great faith in us through this investment, which takes Iggesund Sawmill on into the future. The investment improves our competitiveness and places us in an excellent position to develop the sawmill further,” says Iggesund Sawmill’s manager, Magnus Malmström.
The investment is the biggest made at the sawmill since the investment in the trimming saw 20 years ago.
“The fact that Holmen made an investment for the future in such a turbulent period is a sign of strength and
courage. In the long term, the expansion will ensure that job opportunities are safeguarded in the region and that Holmen and Iggesund Sawmill can continue to contribute to a sustainable world through the production of climate-smart products,” says Johan Padel, Holmen’s Senior Vice President Wood Products.

MiCROTEC Leads the Way in Wood Product Industry’s AI Revolution with MiCROTEC Ai
Since its inception in 1980, MiCROTEC has pushed the limit in auto grading technology and innovation. While artificial intelligence (AI) seems to be the tipping point in the timber industry’s revolution, MiCROTEC is finding new ways to fine tune their AI technology, adapting to industry needs and leveling up the scanning technology game. After Lucidyne’s introduction of “Perceptive Sight” in 2017, MiCROTEC continued with MiCROTEC Ai after Lucidyne’s acquisition in April 2020.
Patrick Freeman, MiCROTEC’s Group CTO, referenced MiCROTEC’s inspiration for the introduction of deep learning applied to the wood products industry, “In 2012, AlexNet, the best-known deep learning convolutional neural network, was launched for the processing of image data. We wanted to introduce this new technology to the industry as quickly as possible, in which we succeeded. Ten years ago, students developed AlexNet. Today, we have an experienced team and a large data pool to draw from. Thanks to these framework conditions, we are one step ahead today.”
MiCROTEC’s deep learning pool is based off 36 years of data and has evolved to real scanning applications. “We have been working with artificial intelligence since 1987. Already five years ago, we built the first industrial scanner as a complete solution using deep learning AI technology,” explains Freeman of MiCROTEC’s history. MiCROTEC’s extensive database utilizes historical images as well as current data from MiCROTEC scanners to improve grading results as mills have them in use. “Our large database usually contains data on similar types of wood which often have comparable properties and characteristics. We use them as a starting point and usually achieve good results very quickly,” explains Freeman. When it comes to artificial intelligence, the tools and application are just as important as the database it learns from. Speaking on the database MiCROTEC’s Ai utilizes, Freeman commented, “This allows us to collect all
the necessary data so that our AI can learn in the best possible way. Then, we just need the right tools to process the data and as many samples as possible so that the AI keeps getting better.”
Currently, the advantages of auto-grading technology equipped with AI are being reviewed by many operating saw and planer mills. Explaining the advantages of high-tech solutions Freeman explains, “Some of the
characteristics of wood are easier to recognize and don’t require AI. As for the rest, AI will help us and customers achieve even better sorting results in the future.” Freeman continues, “Anyone who sells a scanner must ensure that certain quality requirements of the various grading classes are met. With MiCROTEC Ai, we can also make sure that hardly any wood is graded too low in terms of its quality, saving our customers a lot of
32 International Forest Industries | APRIL / MAY 2023
money as a result.” Beyond basic grading technology, integrated AI technology allows the further analysis of logs for accurate volume and aesthetic. “When there is frozen snow on the logs, their volume is often overestimated. Using MiCROTEC Ai, the scanner can distinguish snow much better from wood and measure the logs more precisely.” Freeman adds, “MiCROTEC Ai recognizes certain patterns that are aesthetically desired, thereby ensuring appealing surfaces. Until now, no scanner has been able to do that.”
Artificial intelligence doesn’t stop at scanning technology, but also the tools applied to the grading process. Seeing the need for additional AI analysis and expert MiCROTEC support, MiCROTEC introduced “QC Assist,” the company’s proprietary software tool providing seamless communication with scanners
Patrick Freeman, Group Chief Technology Officer, Microtec
equipped with MiCROTEC Ai. Commenting on the evolution of deep learning support, Freeman says “We have made the use of the deep learning AI as simple as possible for customers. Our web-based application QC Assist supports them and us in the automated collection of data, which are then used to train our networks.”

MORE FOCUS ON CUSTOMERS
The leading technology supplier in the sawmill industry Jartek’s business has been developing well in the past years. Their ThermoWood® business has been global for years, and now the sawmill business will follow.
In the future, the ThermoWood® business will stay global, and the sawmill business will go global with selected steps.
One of the first steps is active sales and marketing work in the whole of Europe.
“We have already installed a superior reference to France, so we have taken some steps”, says Kari Puustinen Sales and Marketing Director of Jartek.
Jartek sees a lot of new potential for both ThermoWood® and sawmill business areas. In the past years, Jartek has changed its strategy from offering a wide range of product lines to a limited number of customers to focusing on developing selected products for a wider range of customers.
MORE THAN MECHANICS
Jartek changed its slogan a bit more than one year ago to MORE THAN MECHANICS. Why, while many companies already highlight innovativeness or added value to customers?
“Jartek also adds value, but we like to highlight the things we are good at”, says Kari Puustinen.
Behind the slogan is what happened in 2020. Jartek used to make projects with thirdparty automation partners – the result was not bad, but it was clearly noticed that when a company wants to bring something new to the market it is better to make it independently.
So Jartek did. In the spring of 2020, Jartek AI, an own automation company, was established and already at end of the year, the first project was running in action. The fast timetable was possible due to the Beckhoff automation system and Jartek’s engineering experts.
“We have to remember, that our engineers started from line 1 with coding, and roughly after six months the first line was running. Today we are realizing the choice was correct”, Kari Puustinen tells.
MORE THAN MECHANICS means that when mechanics and automation fully integrate, then 1+1 is more than 2. In automation and mechanics, Jartek is not focusing on trending things like webshops, IOT or AI, etc. – these are naturally important in the future, but more important is that the customer can operate the lines as simply as possible with high efficiency.
Jartek also adds value, but we like to highlight the things we are good at

ThermoWood® business is growing globally – The forerunner Jartek is continuously developing novelty solutions for the market
“For example, a line has to be as robust as possible. The line consists of as many standard parts as possible which don’t need to be bought from any special webshop. Still, the key to making the line run optimally is to run it with the best available automation, and at Jartek we feel that we have that”, says Kari Puustinen.
The visualization of the automation makes it unique, as it is something the sawmill business has not seen. The software is a fully integrated
open solution which means there are many functions that are already included as a standard without any extra work or cost.
“For example, a diagnostic tool can be added to all automation platforms, but normally it is a third-party tool. The automation system is open, so it is easy to add any third-party functions, for example, scanner, press, or condition monitor system. We do it without any cost”, Puustinen says.

Showtime for Combilift at Ligna
Open air site. Stand M61
In the four years since the last Ligna took place, Irish handling specialist Combilift has been busy introducing new models, finessing technology and expanding its global markets even further. Ligna 2023 also coincides with the company’s 25th anniversary, and visitors will experience an action packed stand in the heart of the outdoor area. The company’s innovations and new product launches
will be the main focus but Combilift also likes to entertain as well as inform, so expect dancing trucks, Irish music and refreshments too.
Around 16 exhibits will demonstrate that Combilift has a solution for pretty much every handling and storage scenario that companies in the timber, joinery and furniture sectors face, and these range from small pedestrian 1,000kg capacity stackers to straddle carriers and mobile gantries which can lift loads of 100,000kg and over.
So let’s take a virtual walk around the stand to pick out some of this year’s highlights. Starting at the back we have two of the largest Combilift models, the Combi-SC Straddle Carrier and the Combi-CSS Slip Sheet, both of which guarantee
safer and more productive operation when working with containers. The Combi-CSS, premiered at the last Ligna, was designed for fast loading

Drum Chippers Offer Access to Biomass Success
Drum chippers play a prominent role in the production of biomass for bioenergy. One of the strongest innovations in this sector is the Peterson 4300-series of drum chippers, ideally suited for biomass producers who have a large variety of feed material. Peterson drum chippers successfully process a range of organic material, from brush to small feedstock, as well as logs up to 24 inches (61 cm) in diameter. This ability makes it an ideal solution for high-volume volume producers.
Heavy Duty Knives
The Peterson 4300B and 4310B drum chippers use a heavyduty knife that produces a clean-cut edge and a more consistent product size compared to ground material. The 4300 series is ideal for processing tops, unsaleable wood and residues left over from logging sites. These drum chippers can yield chips from 1/8” to 1 ¼” (3-31 mm), depending on the rotor and knife configuration.
Peterson drum chipping solutions use a 36-inch diameter by 44¾ inch (91 by 114 cm) wide drum with either 6 or 12 knife pockets,
allowing operators to produce precise chips to meet exacting specifications. Adjustable knives provide a range of chip sizes, which can increase profit potential by allowing the producer to explore possibilities within multiple biomass applications.
Efficiency and Quality
Product consistency and quality are critical to the performance of biomass boilers. It’s important to limit the fines and spears, as these branches can cause material blockages in a biomass plant’s augers. To help limit these issues, the 4300 drum chippers offer secondary screens to process twigs or branches.
Production from Peterson drum chippers will vary depending on the wood species, chip length and tree size. Typical production from a 4300-series machine with a six-pocket drum making 7/8” (mm) length chips will be approximately 80 tons per hour. Microchip production making .25” (6 mm) chips with a twelve-pocket drum will yield about 50 tons per hour.

As the global demand for electricity and heat increases, many are looking to biomass as a renewable and sustainable source of energy. Producers understand the potential of this revenue stream and are looking for ways to capitalize.
The Track Mounted 4310B Drum Chipper
4310B Drum Chipper
Value Added Features
Features of the 4300-series include a hydraulic clutch, sloped feed deck for ease of feeding the chipper and wear-resistant AR 400 wear surfaces on the drum pockets and shell. In addition, a built-in chip accelerator evenly packs wood chips tightly, ensuring maximum load capacity for increased efficiency. It also throws chips well away from the machine for landclearing operations. Optional material sizing grates further reduce oversize twigs and branches, and an optional chip accelerator helps with loading.
The 4310B is designed to be highly mobile and versatile and can be used in a variety of settings. The machine is mounted on a tracked undercarriage, which allows it to be easily transported and positioned on-site, even in difficult terrain and remote locations. This mobile version is available with end-load or top-load spouts for loading trailers.
Is Now the Time?
In the face of increasing demand for renewable energy sources, many producers are realizing it may be time to capitalize on biomass opportunities. Drum chippers
like the Peterson 4300-series can provide the consistency and reliability necessary to succeed in this growing industry.
Applications:
Forestry chipping is an important process that helps to transform woody materials into a range of useful products. By chipping wood and other organic materials, we can reduce waste and create valuable resources for a variety of applications.
Biomass energy production: Chipping is a critical step in the production of biomass energy, as the chips can be burned to produce heat or electricity. The
chips are typically transported to biomass power plants, where they are combusted to generate energy.
Mulching: Wood chips can be used as mulch for landscaping and gardening purposes. Mulch helps to retain moisture in the soil, control weed growth and protect plant roots from temperature fluctuations.
Animal bedding: Wood chips can be used as bedding for livestock and other animals. The chips provide a comfortable and absorbent surface for the animals to rest on and can help to control odors and pests.
Erosion control: Wood chips can be used to stabilize soil and prevent erosion in areas that have been disturbed by logging, construction, or other activities. The chips help to retain moisture in the soil and prevent runoff, which can reduce erosion and improve soil quality.
Composting: Wood chips can be mixed with other organic materials such as food waste and yard trimmings to create compost. Compost is a valuable soil amendment that can improve soil fertility and structure.

Equipment manufacturer
Rawlings describes itself as a “proven leader” in size reduction technology that specializes in helping business owners with the design of custom wood-waste recovery systems for specific processing needs and budgets.
Rawlings states it can handle every aspect of configuring, building, installing, and supporting a complete materials processing system. Its electric stationary systems come in all shapes and sizes – indoor/outdoor; from simple stand-alone vertical hogs for saw and paper mills, to complete multi-dimensional systems.
“Add a wide variety of available options, and you’ve got the flexibility to customize the perfect wood waste recovery system,” the company stated.
Each system can be designed with work platform decks, choice of belt, chain or vibrating in-feed and out-feed conveyors, metal or magnet protection, product screening and separation all customizable for specific operations.
Markets for wood waste start with feedstock for engineered woods, landscape mulch, soil conditioner, animal bedding, compost additive, sewage sludge, and boiler fuel. All these end uses have similar processing requirements in that the wood waste has to be separated from other wastes, cleaned by removing contaminants and fasteners,
and, in some cases, processed through grinding or chipping. The final use of the wood waste often determines how clean and consistent the feedstock must be (California Integrated Waste Management 2001).
“During our 40 years designing wood waste grinding systems we have found that most of our clients are looking to get the smallest end particle size on a single pass, onestage pass through the grinder,” Rawlings said. “We often suggest that this is not always the most economical option in the long run.
“Running the grinder and related equipment at full surge capacity results in higher consumption of spare parts and maintenance costs. And depending if you’re using electricity or diesel fuel these costs add up over time.”
During the preliminary design there are many factors that should be considered. Such factors include species of wood, moisture content, diameter and length of incoming wood waste, metal contamination and most importantly the required end product size.
For high volume high capacity wood handling operations that typically receive a large variety of contaminated materials such as railroad ties, pallets, construction, demolition and hurricane waste, Rawlings recommends wood waste systems to incorporate a combination of equipment. This could include both horizontal and vertical feed grinders.
Horizontal grinders or slow speed grinders are often utilized
as the primary grinder while the vertical grinders are used to produce a smaller more consistent particle size. Using metal protection, product screening and separation allows the customer to protect their investment while producing a high-quality consistent end product.
If the wood handling system is designed to receive a steady stream of bark or sawmill waste a vertical feed hog is the preferred option. Typically in this scenario
most of the incoming material is preprocessed further upstream and it already sized to be processed through this type of grinder.
Rawlings Vertical Grinders
Each unit is equipped with the Rawlings Super Hi-Inertia Solid Steel Rotor. With the increased inertia of the solid steel rotor our machine runs at lower RPM’S than many competitors, resulting in overall savings of electricity and maintenance costs.
The Rawlings wood hog is recognized in the industry as a ‘Green monster hog’ and provides the crushing and shearing power needed to handle really tough jobs like green waste, cypress, redwood, cedar, black spruce, poplar and a wide range of other stringy and fibrous material. The machines are also tolerant of contaminants, rocks and metal without catastrophic maintenance costs if metal enters the grinding chamber.
“For over 40 years, we’ve assisted our customers in utilizing renewable resources while reducing and recycling a wide variety of wood waste into valuable wood fiber products,” Rawlings stated. “We offer a complete line up of seven different sizes of both vertical and horizontal hogs to fit any application.”

Since 1983, Bandit has manufactured equipment for a multitude of wood waste processing markets. The vision since the beginning, is to build quality, highly productive, easy to maintain equipment providing years of dependable service. The commitment for quality, innovation, and dedication is instilled in every employee and is one of the main reasons why Bandit became an Employee-Owned Company (ESOP) in 2018. These core values ensure each Bandit machine will leave the factory ready to exceed your expectations.
Bandit has manufactured whole tree chippers since 1988 and was the first to develop a self-propelled model. In 2005, Bandit expanded the whole tree chipper product line by producing a drum-style chipper, called the Model 2090. Since then, a complete line of highly productive drumstyle chippers have been engineered. In 2021, Bandit announced the purchase of the Trelan company. Trelan has produced quality disc style chippers since the 1970’s. This
acquisition further enhanced Bandit’s line of whole tree chippers by now offering a diverse line of disc and drum style chippers.
How will a Bandit whole tree chipper make your operation more efficient?
When original founder Mike Morey Sr. started Bandit, he was determined to build a quality chipper line built heavy-duty reducing customer downtime. Since 1983, this philosophy has not changed as each chipper is built with the highest of quality components and steel. The drum inside each Bandit whole tree chipper is extremely durable. These drums feature reinforced knife pockets and thick drum skins to provide years of dependable service. Each wear area has thick steel ensuring longevity and reduced downtime. To compliment this durable design each Bandit whole tree chipper is standard with a 5 year or 3,000 hour “GUTS” warranty covering the Bandit manufactured components of the feed system and drum.
All Bandit drum-style chippers feature the Patented slide box feed system. This system is known for providing unmatched pulling and compressing power reducing the need to reposition material simplifying feeding. The slide box feed system allows the top
feed wheel to travel straight up and down providing direct down pressure as material is feed into the chipper drum. The standard hydraulic lift cylinder or cylinders create an abundant amount of down pressure and compresses stubborn limbs and branches into the feed system.
All Bandit chippers are known to throw chips at a tremendous velocity fully loading chip vans to their maximum capacity. Each discharge transition is designed to provide maximum airflow allowing for more chips in the truck reducing transportation costs and spillage wasted on the ground. Due to the strong throwing action, auxiliary blowers are not needed when producing a smaller chip size.
Producing a variety of chip sizes is easily done with a
Bandit whole tree chipper. Dual edge or Babbitted style knives are available on most models. For those not needing a consistent chip size, the dual edge knives are recommended. If a consistent specific chip size is needed, then Babbitted style knives will need outfitted on the machine. The standard chip size is 5/8” with additional chip sizes of ¾” 7/8” or 1” options available. Bandit chippers also are very efficient at producing a 3/16” microchip for pellet production. A special drum with additional knives are used to produce a microchip. If a standard chip size is then required, the additional knife pockets can be blocked off. Bandit chippers are often the preferred solution for this application, as microchips can be produced using less fuel, and the chipper does not need a separate auxiliary blower to assist with chip throwing.
What chipper is right for you? With the most diverse line in the industry, Bandit has you covered with a variety of models. Today’s current line consists of a variety of models ranging from 20” to 36” capacity, available as towbehind or track. Select models are also available with loader or cab and loader for added efficiency.

Tigercat offers the broadest range of both track and drive-to-tree feller bunchers in the industry. Along with innovative features like the ER technology® and WideRange®, Tigercat’s feller bunchers offer operator comfort, ease of servicing, efficiency and long-term productivity.
822E and LX830E feller bunchers
The 822E is the most compact track feller buncher in the Tigercat track carrier lineup. The powerful machine is versatile for challenging thinning and final felling applications.
The Tigercat LX830E is a high production leveling feller buncher with near zero tail swing. Featuring the powerful Tigercat FPT C87 engine and closed loop drive system, the LX830E is well equipped to handle a variety of felling applications on steep slopes.
The powerful lift capacity, tight-tuck ER boom geometry, and compact tail-swing make the 822E and LX830E perfect for selective felling where minimum site impact is important.
A redesigned engine enclosure provides improved roof access for cleaning debris. A boom slider also reduces debris build-up in hard-toreach areas. The clamshell style enclosure and drop-down side platform allow easy access to all sides of the engine.
The updated cab includes a durable, roomy, air ride seat with heating and cooling. The full-length front window and narrow side posts give the operator an excellent view of the tracks and surrounding
area. The standard equipped skyVIEW and optional rearVIEW camera systems allow the operator to see above and behind the machine.
The Tigercat extreme duty leveling undercarriage on the LX830E is strong and stable, and the closed loop drive system provides the speed and tractive effort for high performance in the most challenging terrain.
855E and L855E feller bunchers
For plantation eucalyptus applications, Tigercat offers the 855E carrier equipped with the 2000 series bunching shear. This combination is a low cost per tonne solution for harvesting eucalyptus pulpwood on account of the fast shear cycles and extremely
efficient carrier hydraulics.
The 2000 shear accumulates large parallel bunches, improving skidder productivity. In addition, the shear is a lower cost, lower maintenance alternative to a disc saw felling head. In rocky or abrasive soil types, the maintenance and wear benefits are even more pronounced. The shearequipped feller buncher also burns less fuel compared with a disc saw.
The 855E can also be mated to the Tigercat 5185 directional felling saw for an extremely fuel-efficient machine to fell and shovel large, high value timber. A full range of Tigercat felling heads are available, including a bunching saw or shear for smaller diameter timber or the single post 5702 felling saw for larger trees and mixed diameter stands.
The L855E features Tigercat’s patented forestduty leveling undercarriage, providing exceptional stability on steep slopes. It uses two massive hydraulic cylinders and heavy steel sections for a solution that is simple, robust and reliable.
An important advantage common to Tigercat track feller bunchers is ER boom technology. ER technology provides increased production compared with conventional boom systems –especially in high cycle applications.
The patented ER boom system allows the machine operator to extend and retract the boom on a horizontal plane smoothly and quickly

using a single joystick. The introduction of the new 3-mode ER boom control allows the operator to choose between ER, semi-ER and conventional. The new semi-ER function allows the operator to extend the boom on a horizontal plane using a single joystick but retracts the boom with the increased power of both cylinders, doubling the pull force.
Key to this technology is reduced energy consumption. The ER system transfers energy
back and forth between the main and the stick boom functions, reducing the total energy needed to move the boom system. This translates to reduced demands for power, pump flow and system cooling. Competing solutions do not offer the simplicity and fuel savings of Tigercat’s design.
Drive-to-tree feller bunchers
Tigercat builds three models of drive-to-tree feller buncher models for the full range of thinning and final felling
duties. The 720G and 724G are designed for thinning and clear fell applications and the large capacity 726G fells large diameter timber in tough terrain.
The G-series machines cabs are designed for productivity and operator comfort. Visibility is enhanced with a larger front window and larger rear quarter windows. The view over the back tires is the best in the industry – an asset in thinning applications.
Only Tigercat offers WideRange®, the infinitely variable transmission for drive-to-tree feller bunchers. Drive-to-tree feller bunchers spend a great percentage of the total duty cycle driving – to the next tree or to and from the bunch pile. WideRange allows the operator to travel more quickly than conventional twospeed transmission equipped feller bunchers. Quicker travel boosts productivity and reduces cost per tonne in high production thinning and final fell applications.
Tigercat’s unique WideRange drive system is standard on all G-series feller bunchers. A twospeed transmission is optional on the 720G and 724G.
Tigercat drive-to-tree feller bunchers are often equipped with bunching saws and shears for plantation applications with smaller diameter timber. In high cycle, multi-stem bunching applications, Tigercat bunching saws and shears contribute to significant productivity gains by increasing the number of stems per cycle.

Compact FAE forestry solutions
Opening forest roads, especially in wooded areas and forests, requires highperforming, compact equipment that can work with agility around vegetation.
FAE — the world’s leading designer and manufacturer of heads for tractors, excavators, skid steers, special vehicles, and tracked carriers for forestry, agricultural, and road work — has developed a series of machines with these features. Power, agility, and a compact size allow these FAEs to move with ease even on steep slopes and uneven terrain. Let’s take a look at them all!
FAE PT-175
The FAE PT-175 is FAE’s tracked carrier designed for forestry work wherever agility and maximum operating efficiency are required, like when managing wooded areas, creating firebreaks, and working near power lines, and oil and gas pipelines.
The sturdy construction with oscillating undercarriage is the best match for the 140/U/SONIC mulcher. The
exclusive Sonic system increases mulching efficiency for maximum productivity with minimum fuel consumption.
The engine power and low operating weight of the CAT C4.4 Acert makes it possible to work on steep slopes and soft ground. The hydraulic system guarantees reliability and efficiency. The spacious cab is unrivaled when it comes to comfort, ergonomics and operator safety.
Starting this year, the PT-175 has a new option designed specifically for maximum safety during forestry work, in places with overgrown vegetation: the “Forestry protections kit”. It includes special grills that completely cover the cab windows and engine compartment doors.
FAE RCU-55 and RCU-75 REMOTE CONTROLLED TRACKED CARRIERS
Launched on the market in 2022, the RCU is a highperforming, compact remote controlled tracked carrier capable of managing and maintaining greenery even on especially steep and hard-toreach slopes, up to 55°. Its sweet spot is forestry work: clearing slopes with small vegetation located in hard-toreach places.
The RCU is powered by the Kohler common rail electronic fuel injection engine, a compact and powerful and fuelefficient propulsion system (56 hp for the RCU-55 and 74 hp for the RCU-75) that complies with the most stringent emission standards. The dual hydrostatic transmission makes it easier to manage traction and the attachment. Electronically controlled piston pumps combined with a dedicated electronic control unit provide

an integrated technological system. RCU vehicles have an ergonomic remote control with a large 3.5 inch display and a 2.4 GHz transmission frequency to better manage all vehicle and head functions. The Heavy Duty undercarriage has a variable hydraulic design with independent rollers, an automatic tensioning system, a triple flange oscillating roller system, and triple flange idler wheels. This type of undercarriage, combined with the standard High Profile rubber tracks (with a 72 pitch - 250 mm / 10 in width for RCU-55 or an 86 pitch - 320 mm / 13 in width for RCU-75) allow FAE RCUs to operate in the toughest conditions. For the RCU-75, there is also the option of a steel undercarriage,
with outstanding traction on especially demanding terrain.
There are 3 FAE forestry mulchers specially designed to work with the RCUs (depending on the model).
The BL2/RCU head can mulch branches and wood up to 15 cm / 6 in in diameter, and the BL1/RCU head can mulch branches and wood up to 12 cm / 5 in in diameter. Both heads are equipped with a fixedblade rotor and Bite Limiter technology that provides high output, even with less horsepower, due to the low power absorption. The PML/ RCU head is another swinging hammer forestry mulcher that is ideal for mulching grass and small branches up to 5 cm / 2 in in diameter.
FAE DML/SSL MULCHER FOR SKID STEERS
Launched on the market in 2012 and completely redesigned in 2022, the FAE DML/SSL is a compact mulcher for skid steers up to 75 hp with an extremely robust frame that makes it a long-term investment. The frame on the new 2022 version has been lowered to give the operator better visibility. Additionally, Spike Pro counter blades were added inside the frame, and there is an optional Internal Cooler to cool the oil, helpful in areas where it gets very hot. The skids are also new, now being shaped to allow the rotor to protrude further from the frame and therefore shred more aggressively. In the finishing phase, it does a much better job of mixing the shredded material with the soil. With these new skids, the mulcher can create a mixed and aerated substrate composed of wood chips mixed with soil, an especially fertile combination that provides nutrients and helps regenerate the ground
where it is spread. Further modifications were made to the rotor and the teeth, moving to the MINI C/3 tooth and the MINI BL blade, standard for the Bite Limiter rotor. The MINI C/3 tooth is especially good at mulching different types of wood, including hardwood. The new DML/SSL is available in 4 versions: with Variable Torque (VT) motor, with SONIC motor, and either version with or without Bite Limiter Rotor.
The DML/SSL/SONIC and DML/SSL/BL/SONIC models also benefit from the special FAE app, a valuable tool for getting the most out of FAE forestry mulchers with Sonic system. The app, for IOS and Android, makes it possible to calibrate or check the calibration done at the time of commissioning, and check the main system parameters in real time, plus it serves as a guide in solving any problems.

The 480B is a powerful, robust mulcher, able to tackle the toughest terrain with ease. Tigercat heavy duty build quality provides superior durability with high uptime for large-scale, timesensitive right-of-way and site preparation projects.
The 480B is equipped with an efficient, high-capacity cooling system with a variable speed fan and automatic reversing cycle, a dedicated attachment pump, and an efficient closed loop track drive system. Inside the cab, the operator has ergonomic electronic joysticks and excellent sightlines. LED lighting along with front and rearVIEW camera systems are standard equipment.
With the counter-rotate function (CRF), the track mulchers can pivot about their center axis effortlessly ‘on a
dime’ for easier turns at the end of a row. The heavy-duty steel engine enclosure and precleaner guard eliminates the requirement for a rear canopy. All structural components are designed for full time forest duty.
470
mulcher
Utilizing the same Tigercat build quality and superior durability, the smaller design of the 470 makes it well suited to right-of-way and site preparation projects where a narrow, agile machine with extremely low ground pressure is required.
The Tigercat FPT C87 engine provides 245 kW (330 hp) and has a closed loop drive
system, providing the optimal balance of speed and tractive effort, with performance and efficiency.
The one-piece high lift boom, along with the stability of the long track frames, gives the 470 an advantage when working on sloped terrain.
M726G mulcher
The M726G is a 275 kW (370 hp) class mulcher well suited to right-of-way, vegetation management, land improvement and commercial clearing applications.
Tigercat built forestry-grade axles provide tough off-road durability, and come in a wide variety of configurations supporting single and dual
tire installations to maximize performance in tough terrain. A large attachment pump provides high flow to the mulching head, all important in mulching applications. The optional multi-function hydraulic package with a quick attach boom adapter allows the M726G to be quickly converted from a mulcher to a feller buncher by swapping out the mulching head for felling saw. The cross-flow cooling system delivers optimal airflow to a high-capacity cooling package -- essential in dry hot regions with high dust levels and extreme ambient temperatures.

MAX 50 le – Radio controlled tracked tool carrier Innovative and easy to use.
The first SEPPI M. self-propelled tracked vehicle to be used in the agricultural, forestry and municipal sectors: Mulching steep slopes, maintaining water channels, power lines, right-of-way maintenance (ROW), working on and around of farmland, cleaning forests, maintaining roads and trails, and much more.
SEPPI M. offers a tracked vehicle with a robust design to tackle the most demanding jobs. Behind the ergonomic design there is sophisticated technology: the MAX 50 le also convinces with its powerful engine and handling.
The vehicle, with its 49 HP, is a concentrate of power thanks to the industrial-grade Perkins 3-cylinder STAGE V turbodiesel engine. Separate hydraulic systems of four pumps ensure independent functional control of the track and of the tool in all situations.
The stability and grip of the vehicle are guaranteed even on difficult terrain thanks to the optimally positioned centre of gravity.
The track can be widened by 25 cm on each side, for a total of 181 cm, and the vehicle will therefore be able to tackle vertical and horizontal gradients of up to 55°.
The wide tracked undercarriage ensures stable and powerful vehicle movements, both uphill and when crossing wide and irregular slopes.
Its distinctive feature is the radio control. It is equipped with a graphic display that monitors all functions, statuses and any anomalies. The frequency range is 2.4 GHz and covers distances of up to 160 metres.
The user will be won over by these features:
AUTO TENSION TRACK system –Self-tensioning track
The individual trucks are tensioned by a hydraulic system, which regulates the tension according to the conditions of the ground and prevents the track from striping or breaking.
HIGH GRIP - the high traction tracks have a high profile to ensure excellent stability and grip on slopes up to 55° in optimal conditions.
The MAX 50 le is supplied in combination with a SEPPI mulching attachment.
With this combination, mulching, grinding, tilling, and crushing work can be carried out even on hard-to-access terrains.
The radio-controlled tracked carrier is now available in the version with MICROFORST rc radio-controlled forestry mulcher, and in the future, it will also be available with a stone/soil crusher MICROSOIL rc or a flail mulcher for grass and light brush.
SEPPI MAXIFORST is a professional PTO forestry mulcher designed to be
mounted on tractors from 300 to 500 hp. The largest, strongest, most productive in the SEPPI M forestry mulcher range.
A newly designed SEPPI MAXIFORST with improved features in cutting, reliability, ease of use using the latest technology and solutions in the industry. This result takes our new MAXIFORST to a whole new level.
This new mulching machine is designed for use on PTO tractors with a power range from 300 to 500 HP, focusing on the key features of maximum wear resistance, optimal protection of the transmission of both the tractor and the machine, high working speed, cutting-edge technology and operator safety.
Wear resistance is guaranteed by the high-quality steel construction, with the addition of HARDOX plates in the grinding chamber of the rotor housing and door, which can be easily replaced at the end of their life, a feature already widely adopted in our stone crushing machines. The sturdy steel skids now also have an interchangeable wear plate, so it will no longer be necessary to change the whole skid or lose time restoring it by welding with a filler. The transmission has been completely revamped.

Jartek used to make projects with third-party automation partners – the result was not bad, but it was clearly noticed that when a company wants to bring something new to the market it is better to make it independently.

Other standard equipment includes a rearVIEW camera system, and a boom float system that allows the mulching attachment to automatically follow the contours of undulating terrain.
760B mulcher
The 760B is a 550 hp class mulcher carrier designed primarily for silviculture applications. Forestry companies require the capability to efficiently clean up residual post-harvest forest debris and grind stumps to ground level for quicker replanting and thus shorter rotations.
In stable, well-drained soil types, a high horsepower wheel driven machine has many advantages over track driven mulchers including quicker travel speeds, lower operating costs and the ability to run a wide mulching head for improved coverage and wider swaths, increasing quality and productivity.
The 760B is standard equipped with boom float,
is a new starting system with M-TURBO fluid couplings, which replace mechanical centrifugal clutches, and guarantee a smooth start of the rotor and greater reliability and protection from impacts
on the tractor’s PTO. New optimized ventilation is also included, which combined with the integrated cooling system, protects the entire system from overheating, ensuring maximum lubrication and sealing performance of the components. The temperature can be kept controlled directly from the tractor, using ISOBUS technology, which is available as an option.
The speed and quality of the cut are guaranteed by the rotor featuring our patented V-LOCK tool mounting system. The benefits of this system reduce rotor wear, provide better balance, easier and faster tool changeover, and increase cutting capacity for trees up to 60cm in diameter. The mounting of heavy-duty wearresistant tools with tungsten carbide insert and more
slender tips combined with five rows of tempered counter knives on the frame and door, delivers a finer, more uniform mulching performance.
Available working width: 250, 300 cm [98”, 118”].
APPLICATIONS:
• Land clearing in the oil and gas industry
• Maintaining of power and communication lines
• Improve arable fields and other land
• Vegetation management
• Fast forest renewal after bark beetle infestation
• Clearing forests after harvesting wood
• Right-of-way clearing
ground level fueling and Tigercat’s WideRange transmission. The operator’s station was designed with operator comfort in mind, with a climate-controlled seat, Bluetooth audio connectivity and ergonomic controls.
4061 mulching heads
The 4061 mulching heads are manufactured to Tigercat’s exacting high standards for robustness and quality. The 4061-30 is a 3 metre (118 in) wide mulching head that can be used on the 480B and 760B mulchers. The 4061-25 is a 2,5 metre (98 in) wide head, best suited to the 480B and M726G mulchers.
The housing features reinforced side covers and abrasion resistant skis. The housing is optimized with debris door cylinders mounted internally for protection and contains position references to aid in ski alignment. Poly chain eliminates belt slip and provides efficient power transfer to the rotor, lowering maintenance time and costs
associated with conventional v-belts.
Regular maintenance is a snap, maximizing uptime. The Tigercat designed tooth and holder system uses a taper lock interface that requires no torque wrenches, greatly reducing changeover time. The teeth are extremely durable with carbide tips and carbide inserts for increased life.
Tigercat mulcher carriers offer superior build quality,
greater hydraulic efficiency, better operator ergonomics and easier access to components and daily service points than competing mulcher carriers. The result is greater uptime and higher productivity.
