Opportunity knocks

F

or much in the Northern Hemisphere, this Summer can’t come soon enough. Many parts of North America suffered historically cold conditions over the winter months, while in Europe, or at least in the UK where International Forest Industries is headquartered, flooding made winter a damp and depressing affair. But the green shoots of Spring have sprung and as this edition of IFI hits the desks around the world, those in the Northern Hemisphere should be starting to enjoy some Summer temperatures and more blue sky. Summer, of course, also signals the start of another season of forestry sector exhibitions. These exhibitions are crucial to everyone in our industry and we, as a medium, do everything we can to promote them. On a slightly depressing note, the season should have been officially underway late last month (April) when the Quebec Forestry and Construction Expo was due to be held. But the event has had to be postponed. Though it has not been cancelled outright at this stage, the delay provides a stark reminder to anyone who felt the dark years of 2008-2012 were completely behind us. But on a more positive note, the third Expo Forest Brazilian Forest Fair will begin imminently in Sao Paulo. This event, as a colleague of mine particularly devoted to all things Brazilian regularly tells me, provides a reminder of just how important South American markets have become to manufacturers. The scale of this particular event makes that reminder impossible to ignore. Meanwhile, major promotions group Elmia is putting the finishing touches on preparations ahead of World Bioenergy 2014 in Jönköping, which is set for early June. The bioenergy sector is champing at the bit to kick off this regular event, which provides a unique meeting place for

the bioenergy community to swap notes on the latest techniques and technology, and hopefully allow contractors to pick up some business changing machinery. Interforst 2014 in Germany will also cover wood as a renewable energy source, along with a wider focus on a broad range of forest product technology. This one will be on us by mid-July. Later in the Summer, FinnMETKO will provide a focal point for forestry sector professionals in the forestry stronghold of Finland. Then in September, we begin to wind down with one final fling through the APF 2014 exhibition in England. It will be a busy and demanding period of travel for manufacturers trotting the globe to ensure they are represented so market shares can be protected. And, for the first time in years, it is also an opportunity for serious growth. Finnish cut-to-length specialist Ponsse released its first quarter results recently and I was struck by the change in fortunes over a 12-month period. The group recorded some truly impressive figures (see World Markets – Logging p.12) and has shown that companies that have continued to innovate and ensure their presence is felt across international markets can deliver results not seen since pre-2008. This may be seen in the financial results of more and more companies as the year progresses and is likely to buoy the mood leading into industry shows. Morbark and Precision join forces

M

orbark, a leading manufacturer of highperformance wood waste reduction equipment for more than 50 years, has signed a contract with Precision Sharpening Devices to become the exclusive original equipment manufacturer to sell the Bevel Buddy Chipper Knife Sharpener through its authorised dealer network. Since 1988, Precision Sharpening Devices has been manufacturing counter grinding/ back bevelling equipment for knives used by a variety of industries, mostly for the pulp and paper, sawmill, plywood, and whole tree chipping markets.

The Bevel Buddy handheld sharpener allows the knives to be re-sharpened without needing to be removed from the machine. The knives can be re-sharpened this way two to three times, reducing customer downtime. “The partnership between Morbark and Precision Sharpening Devices with their line of Bevel Buddy Chipper Knife Sharpeners will offer our customers a product that helps them operate their equipment at the highest levels of efficiency,” Mark Mills, from Precision Sharpening Devices, said. “The results are fuel savings, meeting production quotas, less down time, and greatly

DuraTech Industries has released its much anticipated TC-15 tree chipper. The TC-15 is the larger option in the DuraTech tree chipper line. With an option of a 122 hp (91 kw) CAT C4.4 or 139 hp (103.7 kw) CAT C4.4 diesel engine and PT-Tech clutch, the powerful TC-15 can grind logs up to 375 mm (15 in) in diameter. “We are excited to offer a larger tree chipper with the same advanced and powerful technology utilised in our grinders,” Bob Strahm of DuraTech Industries said. “Our TC-12 tree chipper entered

us into a new market, and now we are expanding further into this territory.” The TC-15 features a springloaded feed wheel with adjustable down pressure, an optional height sensor that automatically adjusts the feed roller to material size and an optional hydraulic gathering winch. A hydraulic two feed roller system feeds the four 107.5 mm (4.5 in) knives designed to chip wood waste. This high-powered unit discharges debris 360° from the hydraulic rotating adjustable chip spout, allowing the user to alter chip disposal. The TC-15 has multiple safety features like the innovative hopper safety light bars with easy and instant shut down. There are also two E-stop switches, a disc hood closed proximity switch and a breakaway brake switch to ensure the safety of the operator. “Safety is a major concern when operating chippers,” Strahm said. “The precautions installed on both of our tree chippers allow the users to operate safely and benefit from full use of all the features.” The new tree chipper is available with a pintle or ball hitch and can easily be towed to a job site. This unit is compact measuring 1985 mm x 5120 mm (79 in x 208 in).

Metso’s biomass moisture analyser wins award Metso’s biomass moisture analyser has received the esteemed iF design award in one of the world’s top product design competitions. The jury recognised the product for its design quality, degree of innovation, environmental impact, functionality, safety and branding, among others. “The design features competitive and easy-to-use fuel moisture measuring equipment coupled with a user interface that can be used in multiple surroundings,” Arvo Rahikkala, Business Manager for Power and Minerals Automation within Metso, said. With Metso MR Moisture Analyser, it is possible to accurately measure the moisture content of virtually any bulk material, such as wood-based samples (whole-

tree chips, forest residue chips, peat), annual fibres (straw, grains, willow), minerals and sludge, regardless of the material quality or particle size. The fast and reliable moisture measurement is applicable to pulp and paper mills, minerals processing plants as well as power plants to optimise their operations. “Improved moisture analysing technology brings significant benefits, for example, to biofuel power plants where fuel moisture is the main property measured,” Rahikkala said. “By measuring moisture more accurately, power plants can more accurately determine the true heat value and heat value based price of incoming biofuel. for enhanced productivity.” Compared with conventional oven drying that requires both resources and time to provide accurate results, Metso MR Moisture enables power producers to attain a fast and reliable moisture measurement with less effort and lower costs. Metso MR Moisture is the first industrial moisture measurement application using magnetic resonance technology to measure the water content by measuring hydrogen atoms from free water molecules.

This October, forestry contractors and company people will again have the opportunity to visit modern steep terrain harvesting operations in Austria. In addition to visiting operations and innovation in steep terrain harvesting, a focus will also be on safety and training. The 5 day tour will include a full day of professional training at the Ossiach Austrian Federal Training Institute. The tour is being organized by Prof Rien Visser from the School of Forestry at the University of Canterbury. In addition to two previous successful trips, Rien completed his PhD in Austria and is quite familiar with their operations and has good contacts to organise such a trip. The tour will visit a number of live yarder operations, inspect their forest roads, as well as a tethered harvester and forwarder operation. Other tour highlights will include visiting two yarder and steep terrain equipment manufacturers; Mayr-Melnhof

and Konrad ForstTechnik who make the Syncrofalke and Mounty yarders respectively – both leading brands in the European market. For the first few days the Austrian Professor Karl Stampfer, a recognized leader in steep terrain productivity, safety and ergonomics will join the tour. The last day will be hosted by the Austria Federal Forest service, an entity that has an exemplary record in professional training and innovative steep terrain operations. Wood energy takes centre stage for Interforst 2014

I

nterforst 2014 will be focused on wood as a renewable resource. After cropping and harvesting, this topic will rank second at this key international forestry and forest technology trade fair. Well-known exhibitors will present machinery and equipment for the entire energy wood process chain in Munich from July 16-20, ranging from timber harvesting, transportation and processing up to wood as a source of energy. Another focal point will be the quality of solid fuels and their quantification. In many areas of forestry, the use of wood as an energy source exerts a noticeable influence, a trend which is also recognisable in forest technology. There are two tendencies: on the one hand, the consumers’ requirements regarding the quality of the final product are continuously rising; on the other hand, resource efficiency at the different levels of the entire process chain is an important topic. In addition, an increasing number of new areas have been opened up as a result of the use of wood as a source of energy in the last few years, such as for example short rotation coppices (SRC) or wood sourced from landscape conservation projects. Currently, there is an intense technology transfer, particularly in the field of harvesting machinery. The traditional sales market of the

forest sector economy has been clearly extended. Many fellerbunching units can meanwhile be used in all three areas. Werner Steininger, Managing Director of Westtech Maschinenbau evaluated the current changes in the market: “In the meantime, one out of four products we sell is used in short rotation forestry and for wood sourced from landscape conservation projects,” he said. “We constantly tap new fields of application which are partly not very closely related to forestry. We are working intensively on the steady improvement of the service life of our new products, including their wear and spare parts.” This evaluation confirms another current trend for the whole industry: resource efficiency. It is reflected in many areas – whether in connection with gasoline saving chain saws with direct injection engines or with low-consumption drive units in large machines or with new wedge geometries for wood splitters requiring less pressure to split wood of the same thickness. The special presentation on ‘Monitoring nutrient removal during timber harvesting’ is entirely dedicated to this area. Here, harvester units that contribute to reducing the removal of nutrients in the timber stand will be presented. Furthermore, the quality of harvested timber is increased by

delimbing and debarking the felled trees at the same time. A great number of marketleading companies have registered for participation to present their innovations in the area of wood energy. These topics will also be presented and discussed at the congress, the forums and the special presentation placed under the banner, ‘Using wood – moving responsibly into the future’. Two months before opening its gates, Interforst is on track to beat its international numbers from the last show in 2010. In addition to the strong presence of European exhibitors, numerous companies from outside Europe, for example from China, India, Canada and the USA, are represented at the show. Turkey will participate and the largest share of international exhibitors look like being from Austria, Italy, Sweden and Finland, followed by Denmark, Estonia, France, Latvia, Luxemburg, the Netherlands, Poland, Switzerland, Slovenia and the Czech Republic. “With 70,000 m2 of gross exhibition space we have rented about 5% more space than [in] 2010,” Dr Reinhard Pfeiffer,

Managing Director of show organiser Messe München International, said. “Among other things, this increase can be explained by the fact that some exhibitors have enlarged their spaces compared to the previous event. This indicates that there is optimism in the industry.” Ralf Dreeke, Chairman of the Advisory Board confirms: “The market for machinery, for example for the owners of small forests and self-cutters, has shown a very positive development over a long period. As regards the large forestry machines such as, for example, harvesters and forwarders, the market currently seems to grow again – similar to Interforst 2010. “We are convinced of the fact that Interforst 2014 will be able to provide a decisive impulse again and therefore very much look forward to this show.”

Metsähallitus acquires enterprise resource planning system from Savcor Finnish State Forest, Metsähallitus, has acquired an enterprise resource planning system from Savcor Forest. The system is called Ohjas and should take forestry operations to “a new level” once an integration project is complete. That project has started and will be complete by the end of next year 2015. “The main goal is to run and strengthen forestry business

operations with only one system,” Director of Forestry from Metsähallitus, Heikki Savolainen, said. Ohjas includes functions to plan, operate and report processes in wood trade, harvesting, bioenergy and silviculture. Operative financial transactions are also covered by Ohjas. Furthermore, the system acts as a link in between Metsähallitus and

the entrepreneurs. Savcor has been long term partner with Metsähallitus and the Ohjas contract is significant because of its magnitude. The contract includes helpdesk and maintenance of the system. Metsähallitus is a government enterprise divided into business activities and primarily budgetfunded public administration duties. The body manages about

a third of Finland’s commercial forests. The forests are used for various purposes, not just to produce timber but also for recreation and preserving biodiversity. Metsähallitus commercial forest management combines ecological, economic and social sustainability.

Ponsse returns to form Ponsse’s first quarter financials for 2014 position the company for a much brighter year compared to 2013 – they also signal a healthier forestry sector in general

strengthening forestry market has led to a more handsome set of quarterly numbers from major Finnish cut-tolength manufacturer, Ponsse, which registered a 40% improvement in sales. More importantly for the immediate future of the sector and the company, the order books were more than 100% heavier. Net sales for the period were €86.9 million, which transpired into a €7.4 million operating result. The result before tax was €6.9 million and cash flow was €2.2 million. Earnings per share were €0.19 compared to zero in the corresponding period, while the equity ratio improved from 32.3% to 37.9%. The order books stood at €104.1 million at the end of the quarter compared to less than €50 million for the corresponding period. “The good outlook in the

forestry sector had a positive impact,” Ponsse President and Chief Executive Juho Nummela. “The demand for forest machines was at a good level during the first quarter. The order volume of new machines increased, and our order book continued to increase.” He said Russia, which remained an important market area for the group, was still at a “normal level” and the unstable situation in Ukraine had not had a substantial impact. The positive trend in North America meanwhile continued and the market was expected to “develop favourably”. Nummela said Central Europe had shown signs of recovery, while Sweden was still at a low level in terms of overall market development. Serial production of the Ponsse Scorpion range began at the Vieremä factory during the

period and demand continued to be active with feedback from the demonstration tours “extremely positive”. The demand for other product models was maintained at a good level as well to stimulate an active order intake. The service business continued to grow significantly, while used machine sales continued on a moderate growth trend. “Sales of new machines returned to the normal level from the weak comparable period and the net sales for the quarter were good for a first quarter,” Nummela said. “The stock of new products was at a level slightly higher than normal, while the capital tied up in raw materials and consumables increased slightly but the stock of trade-in machines was correspondingly at a good level.” The group’s Euro-denominated

Juho Nummela operating profit was expected to be significantly higher than in 2013. “Ponsse’s strongly renewed and competitive product portfolio and maintenance service solutions are having a positive effect on the company’s business operations,” Nummela said. “Thanks to the strong order books, the factory is able to produce forest machines at normal capacity. We estimate that the work situation of our customers will also continue to be normal. “Our investments in the buildings of the Vieremä factory, product development and maintenance services, development and renewal of production technology and product development will continue.”

Sawlog prices move higher Global sawlog prices rose in the fourth quarter of last year resulting in the GSPI reaching its third highest level since 1995. The highest price increases were seen in western North America, Northern Europe and the Baltic States, according to the Wood Resource Quarterly

S

awlog prices trended upward throughout the world in the December quarter of 2013 and the Global Sawlog Price Index (GSPI) rose to $88.78/m3. This was the highest level in over two years and the third highest price on record since the inception of the Index in 1995, according to a report from the Wood Resource Quarterly (WRQ). At the end of the period, the GSPI was 5.4% higher year-over-year and 14% higher than the 10-year average. Many of the price increases around the world during 2013 were the result of improved lumber prices in a number of key markets in the second half of the year and a substantially higher trade of logs worldwide. Global shipments of softwood logs were up by as much as 17% from 2012, totalling more than 80 million m3, based on estimates by WRQ publisher, Wood Resources

International. This was the highest shipment of logs since 2007 when global trade reached an estimated 86 million m3. Of the ten largest log-importing countries, China, Germany, Sweden, Finland and Canada increased import volumes the most year-over-year. It was only South Korea that reduced importation from 2012 to 2013. On a regional basis, sawlog prices in the fourth quarter went up the most in North America and Europe year-over-year because of tighter log supply, while log prices retracted somewhat in Latin America and Oceania (in US dollar terms). In local currencies, upward price movements the past year have been the highest in the western US, western Canada, Japan, Latvia and Sweden, with fourth quarter pricing between 8-18% higher than in the corresponding period, according to

Sawmills are likely to face higher log prices over 2014 WRQ (www.woodprices.com). Most of the listed countries are major lumber exporters, and with improved consumption of lumber around the world in late 2013, demand for sawlogs did increase so sawmills have been forced

to pay more to secure sufficient supplies to feed their mills. This trend is likely to continue in 2014 with lumber markets improving in North America and Europe.

Wood pellet exports led by southern US Wood pellet exports from North America to Europe have doubled in two years to reach 4.7 Mt in 2013 with the US South accounting for 63% of the volume, according to the North American Wood Fiber Review

W

ith no slowdown in sight, North American wood pellet exporting companies keep building new facilities to manufacture pellets for the European market. Export volumes hit a new record high in the fourth quarter of last year and the total shipments for 2013 were up almost 50% from the previous year and more than double that in 2011. The total value of wood pellet exports reached over $650 million last year. A rapid expansion of pellet production capacity in the US south during 2012 and 2013 has resulted in a tripling of pellet production in the region in just two years. The expansion, which is entirely driven by demand for biomass in Europe, has increased pellet exports from 800,000 t in 2011 to 2.9 Mt in 2013 according to data compiled by Wood Resources

International and reported in the North American Wood Fiber Review. Many of the recent investments in pellet capacity in the US south have occurred along the Atlantic coast, with Enviva and Fram Renewables expanding production in the states of Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia. The expansion in Canadian pellet export has been less dramatic than that of the US, but 2013 volumes were still over 50% higher than in 2011, with British Columbia shipping a majority of the volume. In Canada, there have been two recent developments of interest. Firstly, regular shipments of pellets to South Korea started in the second half of 2013 and, secondly, exports from Eastern Canada from Quebec, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick increased during this same time period.

Rentech plans to increase pellet exports in the back end of this year Eastern Canada will see additional pellet export volumes later in 2014 when Rentech begins operation at its two pellet facilities now underway in Ontario. As reported in the NAWFR (www. woodprices.com), a Quebec pellet export facility under construction at the Port of Quebec is the first dedicated infrastructure for pellet exports along the St Lawrence Seaway. Its presence, when

completed, reduces the heretofore, substantial entry barrier for a number of smaller pellet companies which are interested in the international market. In the fourth quarter last year, export volumes from the Eastern provinces accounted for 25% of Canada’s total pellet exports, a share that is likely to increase in 2014 and 2015.

WA wood chip exports get the nod Wood chips will soon be exported through the Esperance Port in WA following 18 months of preparation. An agreement between Esperance Ports Sea & Land (EPSL) and Australian Plantation Log Exports (APLE) has been approved and will see wood chips finally exported through the port. APLE has been working closely with the Esperance Chamber of Commerce and Industry and EPSL for the last 18 months and said they were pleased with the breakthrough. Farmers who planted trees before the global financial crisis hit, will see the trees go when work begins in May of this year. APLE logistics Manager Peter Sutton said he would work closely with landholders and contractors on the project. “It will be a seven year project that landholders have been very eager to see start”, Mr. Sutton said. “We have seen a lot of this come and go and there has been a lot of talk around the forestry industry in Esperance.” Mr Sutton said APLE became involved after looking at projects around Australia. We amalgamated together and have been talking to the landholders about their options after finally being approved to export chips. “More than 30 permanent jobs would be created by the project as well as supporting local industries including fuel, training and maintenance.” he said. Harvesting crews will be showing up in May to set up locations around Esperance.

Interfor Hints Change? International Forest Products Limited or more popularly known as Interfor will want leverage the popularity from this deviation in the name by asking its shareholders at its May 6 Annual General Meeting (AGM) to vote on a proposal to change the Company name to Interfor Corporation from International Forest Products Limited. “The change will provide a

direct link to our traditional trade name and build on the successful rebranding efforts undertaken in recent years using the Interfor name and logo,” President & CEO Duncan Davies said today. “The new name will also be consistent with the formal names of our US subsidiaries which now account for more than 50% of our production.” The name “Interfor” has been trademarked for exclusive use of

the Company in the world’s major lumber markets. Interfor is a growth-oriented lumber company with operations in Canada and the United States. Canfor sells Quebec mill Canfor Corporation has entered into a letter of intent with Groupe Lebel to sell the Daaquam sawmill located in Saint-Just-de-Bretenières, Quebec. The transaction was expected to close at the end of March and is subject to customary closing conditions, including the execution of a formal agreement. The Daaquam mill produced 120 mbdft of lumber in 2013. “Daaquam was sold because it was not core to our Western Canadian operations,” Don

Kayne, Canfor Chief Executive, said. “Groupe Lebel is a well-respected company and Daaquam is a good strategic fit for it. We wish Groupe Lebel and all the employees of the Daaquam mill good luck in the future.” The proceeds of sale of the Daaquam sawmill and working capital combined with the sale of other associated properties related to Daaquam to other third parties is expected to amount to about $25 million.

Confor secures budget boost for sawmilling Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne has announced that the sawmilling sector will be eligible for a Climate Change Agreement (CCA), unlocking the potential for the sector to save up to GBP 1.5 million ($2.5 million) a year. “This is fantastic news, and the culmination of over a year’s hard work”, said Stuart Goodall, chief executive of Confor. “Confor approached the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) in early 2013 to request that UK sawmilling be accepted for a CCA, which would then provide the opportunity to avoid two energy taxes currently levied on the sector”.

Acceptance into a sector CCA means that sawmill businesses commit to reducing energy consumption per unit of production in return for a rebate on the Climate Change Levy, and, if they are subject to it, avoidance of the Climate Reduction Commitment. Energy reduction measures should be practical, with a reasonable pay-back period. IFI A sector target for reducing energy has been put to DECC. The next stage will be to finalise the details of the CCA and then for interested sawmills to apply to participate in the Agreement.

“Many sawmills can potentially benefit from participating in the CCA, and Confor would be happy to advise any interested mill. However, mills consuming less than 10,000 t of wood a year may find the financial benefit to be marginal at best.” Confor has calculated that the UK sawmilling sector pays around GBP 1.5 million ($2.5 million) a year in energy taxes under the Climate Change Levy and through the Climate Reduction Commitment. Confor: promoting forestry and wood is a membership organisation that promotes sustainable forestry and low-carbon businesses.

J.D. Irving, Limited Wants to Purchase 9% More Private Wood this Year SAINT JOHN, NB: J.D. Irving, Limited (JDI) intends to purchase 9% more wood from private woodlot owners and wood producers than it did last year. This follows a 25-year record for private wood purchases by the company. In the 2013-14 operating year, JDI mills purchased 682,000m3 of NB private wood – the largest volume since 1989. J.D. Irving, Limited has shared its purchase plan for 2014-15 with the seven NB Forest Products Marketing Boards, the NB Federation of Woodlot Owners and the Department of Natural Resources. The plan confirms the company wants to purchase 740,000m3 – a 9% increase over what JDI bought last year. Achieving this plan would be biggest purchase volume from private woodlot owners in JDI’s history. “Private woodlot owners have always – and continue to be - a vital part of the supply chain to sustain mill jobs across New Brunswick. The 58,000m3 increase in wood volumes we want to purchase this year from private producers is the best proof of our commitment,” said Brent Thompson, Director of Wood Procurement for J.D. Irving, Limited. “We appreciate the efforts of almost 700 private woodlot owners and producers who supplied us last year and look forward to working with them in 2014 to achieve this year’s target. Competitive mills provide stable markets for private wood producers. In 2015, sawmill modernizations will create added market opportunities.”

West Fraser acquires Alberta, Arkansas sawmills West Fraser continues to grow its lumber business in the U.S. South and in western Canada with the announcement that it has entered into an agreement to acquire the Bibler Brothers Lumber sawmill and lumber manufacturing operations located in Russellville, Arkansas. West Fraser also announced the successful completion of the acquisition of Buchanan Lumber sawmill located in High Prairie, Alberta from Gordon Buchanan Enterprises Ltd. The Alberta-based Buchanan Lumber sawmill has an annual capacity of approximately 110 million board feet of lumber. West Fraser plans to invest additional capital in the mill to expand the annual production capacity to approximately 175 million board feet. The acquisition includes timber rights having an annual allowable harvest of approximately 430,000 cubic metres of coniferous timber and 21,000 cubic metres

of deciduous timber. The Company expects that the Buchanan Lumber sawmill and related assets will be complementary to several of West Fraser’s existing Alberta operations. The Arkansas-based Bibler Brothers Lumber sawmill produced approximately 136 million board feet of lumber in 2013 and in excess of 160 million board feet in 2005. Russellville is located in western Arkansas and is approximately 80 miles from West Fraser’s recently-acquired sawmill in Mansfield, Arkansas. Completion of the Bibler Brothers Lumber acquisition is subject to satisfaction of certain conditions that are expected to be satisfied before the end of April. Forestry and Sawmill industry movements around the US South West Fraser has purchased Travis Lumber Company’s sawmill and lumber manufacturing operations. Located in Mansfield, Arkansas, the sawmill produced upwards of 100 mmbf last year. West Fraser plans to expand annual production to approximately 150 mmbf. CatchMark Timber Trust announced plans to acquire 36,340 acres of timberland from Hancock Timber Resource Group. The properties are located in Southeast Georgia near Baxley and Waycross and in East Texas near Panola. Including approximately 1.45 million tons of merchantable timber inventory, the approximately $74 million deal – approximately $2,036 per acre - is likely to close during the second quarter. Tolleson Lumber, which currently operates two sawmills and a remanufacturing facility in Georgia,

has been sold to Interfor, a Canadian company establishing a footprint in the southern yellow pine market. Current capacity at Tolleson’s Perry and Preston mills is upwards of 400 mmbf, and the Perry plant has plans to increase its production by 50 mmbf. According to statements released by Interfor, the acquisition increases the company’s overall annual lumber capacity by 20 percent, making it one of the top five lumber producers in North America.

Pacific Northwest After closing its doors last spring, five million dollars in tax credits and state loans has breathed new life into Rough & Ready Lumber Co. The O’Brien, Oregon mill relied on large logs and cited a lack of timber supply when it shuttered its operations. It will use the newly offered financial incentives to automate its procedures and enable it to process smaller logs. The mill

is expected to reopen during the summer. RockTenn has plans to purchase the Simpson Lumber Co. Tacoma (Washington) Kraft Paper Mill for approximately $343 million. The companies have also entered into a seven-year wood chip supply contract. Last year, the mill produced 465,000 tons of various paper grades including containerboard and kraft paper. The plant uses a mix of wood chips and recycled fiber and also operates a 55-MW green biomass fuel cogeneration facility.

Northeast A fire at the Fulghum Fibres wood chip mill in Baileyville, Maine on March 4 has reduced operating capacity by 50 percent. Caused by sparks from maintenance welding, the fire caused an estimated $1 million in damage. It is not yet known when the plant will

return to 100 percent production capacity. Fulghum Fibres supplies the majority of chips used by neighboring pulp mill Woodland Pulp which, as it turns out, has news of its own. International Grand Investment Corp., Woodland Pulp’s parent company, has announced it will make a $120 million capital investment to install two tissue machines at the plant. Production is expected to begin on the first machine during the fourth quarter of 2015, followed by the second machine the first quarter of 2016. St. Croix Tissue will operate the machines that will produce 60,000 tons of tissue annually. Approximately one quarter of the 395,000 metric tons of pulp produced at the Woodland mill will supply the new tissue operations. The remaining pulp will go to market. Universal Forest Products subsidiary purchases assets of North Carolina-based High Level Components Universal Forest Products, Inc. (UFPI) announced that one of its subsidiaries has purchased certain assets of High Level Components, LLC, a building component manufacturer based in Locust, N.C. The transaction closed on March 31, 2014. High Level will join Universal’s UFP Mid-Atlantic subsidiary, a component manufacturer with locations in South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia and North Carolina. The acquisition will expand Universal’s capacity in the region and allow the company to serve customers in the Charlotte, N.C., market, where it currently doesn’t have a significant presence. “As we have assessed opportunities for growth and a stable business climate, the 20 International Forest Industries | APRIL / MAY 2014

Housing Starts Rise 2.8 % in March Led by a 6 % rise in single-family starts, nationwide housing production rose 2.8 % above an upwardly revised February rate of 920,000 to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 946,000 units in March, according to newly released figures from HUD and the U.S. Census Bureau. “We see improving signs of new-home construction as we move into the spring buying season,” said Kevin Kelly, chairman of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and a home builder and developer from Wilmington, Del. “The strongest recovery is in the Northeast and Midwest, where builders were hampered by severe winter weather earlier in the year.” “Today’s report is in line with our forecast of a gradual strengthening in the housing sector in 2014,” said NAHB Chief Economist David Crowe. “However, several uncertainties including tight credit conditions for home buyers and erratic job growth are making builders cautious about getting ahead of demand.” Single-family housing starts rose 6 % to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 635,000 units in March, while multifamily starts fell 6.1 % to 292,000 units. Regionally in March, combined single- and multifamily housing production rose strongly in the Northeast and Midwest with gains of 30.7 % and 65.5 %, respectively, but fell 9.1 % and 4.5 % in the South and West, respectively. Overall permit issuance fell 2.4 % to 990,000 units in March. The Northeast and Midwest posted gains of 33.3 % and 26 %, respectively, while the West was unchanged and the South posted a 17.1 % decline.

Billion dollar Japanese investment in Carter Holt Harvey One of the largest single Japanese investments in the New Zealand economy is occurring with the sale of Carter Holt Harvey’s pulp and paper and packaging businesses for NZ$1.037 billion. Tokyo Stock Exchange-listed packaging giant Oji Holdings Corp will take a 60 percent share of CHH’s PPP assets, comprising some of New Zealand’s largest industrial energy and forest products users, the Tasman and Kinleith pulp and paper mills, and a large Australasian packaging enterprise. Oji already owns the Pan Pac pulp and paper mill, near Napier. Innovation Network Corp of Japan, a government-backed innovation agency that attracts private sector investment to “promote innovation and enhance the value of businesses

in Japan”, makes up the remaining 40 percent joint venture vehicle that will make the investment. The deal is subject to regulatory approvals and is expected to complete in the second half of this year. CHH is 100 percent-owned by New Zealand’s only billionaire, Graeme Hart, owner of the world’s largest packaging business, US-based Reynolds Group, which is under pressure to reduce its outstanding US$18 billion issuing’s of junk-rated corporate bonds. Hart had previously tried to sell the CHH PPP businesses in 2012 and was forced to refinance $1.45 billion in debt when no buyer emerged at the time.

Export log market update NZ log exports Export volumes in February were a February record, with 1.4 million m3 exported. Volumes were up on February last year by 16%. Logs exported to China were up by 21% year-on-year for February. Exports to Korea were steady at 150,000m3 and exports to India rose to 133,000m3. Exports from Canterbury are still increasing, due to the wind throw from last year’s storms being exported. Exports from Lyttleton and Timaru during the past six months are up by 72% on the six months previous. This is an increase of 284,000t compared to the same period the year previous, more than double. There’s been just under 560,000m3, an unknown proportion of which is the wind throw, exported from Canterbury since the storm, and there were estimates of up to 1 million m3 on the ground after the storm, but the real figure could be a lot higher.

Some of this will have been absorbed by the domestic market, but there will still be a lot to be exported in the next six months if it is to reach the market before it is too deteriorated. To put this in perspective to the rest of NZ’s exports though, there were 500,000m3 of logs exported from Tauranga during February alone.

China The volume of softwood logs imported by China during February, as expected, was the highest ever for the month of February. There was just less than 900,000m3 more imported than in February last year, a 63% increase, which has led to rising inventories. From the Pacific North West, Russia and NZ there was a 50% increase in supply of logs year-on-year, and from elsewhere there was a 218% increase. Lumber volumes imported by China are well down, to the lowest volume imported since February 2010. China’s newly built house price index

Pacific North West US log exports to China have been steady through the start of the year, but there was a decline in volume exported from Canada. There has also been a decline in Canada’s lumber exports to China, but there has been steady volumes exported to the US. Cold weather and a lack of access to rail has meant that inventories have been growing at Canadian mills. This has meant price decreases in order to shift lumber. Canadian western mills SPF lumber has dropped 10% since February and there has been more volume transported to the US by road, rather than exported as there is less rail capacity to take lumber to the ports.

Family business boosts production with Wood-Mizer WM4000

A US sawmill business has installed a line of WoodMizer industrial equipment to increase efficiency, yield and profits

I

n less than three months after taking ownership of the family sawmill business, third generation owner Mike Junk and brother-in-law Shawn Fowler made the changes necessary to compete and thrive in the lumber industry. By installing a Wood-Mizer WM4000 thin-kerf industrial headrig to replace their old circular sawmill, Mike and Shawn positioned Honey Grove Hardwoods, on the cutting edge of technology to increase efficiency, yield and profits for their business.

Honey Grove Hardwoods Honey Grove Hardwoods began as JM Junk Lumber Company and Sawmill by Junk’s grandfather in 1941. The family business was continued for several decades by his father before he and Fowler created a partnership and changed the company name to Honey Grove Hardwoods in July, 2013. Cutting hardwoods to produce grade lumber for moulding, caskets, veneer, stair treads, flooring, ties and pallet cants, the US-based company used a circular sawmill as the centre of their operation for more than 70 years. By using old technology and inefficient production methods, Honey Grove Hardwoods was struggling to keep up with 28 International Forest Industries | APRIL / MAY 2014

competitive timber prices and increasing industry demand.

Circular sawmill operation With more than two decades in the lumber business, Junk recently noticed a drastic change in the competitive industry. “For many years, the lumber business has been based solely on production,” he said. “This is no longer the case. The industry is changing from how much you produce to how much profit you can make.” To keep up with the evolving lumber industry, Junk and Fowler came to the conclusion that their circular saw with conventional wide-kerf blades had reached the end of the line. “We realised we were running outdated equipment when we weren’t getting the footage and grade yields that we thought we could get with thin-kerf technology,” Fowler said.

Fitted with a circular headrig and a log carriage, Honey Grove Hardwoods’ operation was not only losing yield, but their production set up was inefficient, forcing the sawyer to do multiple jobs at once. “A vertical edger was positioned in front of the sawyer booth on our circular headrig, which meant the sawyer was also the one doing the edging,” Fowler said. He explained that this process helped with saving costs on labour, but since the sawyer was rushed to saw as well as edge the lumber, it sacrificed quality and production. From outdated equipment to inefficiencies, Junk and Fowler decided to take a closer look at upgrading their entire operation.

Transitioning to Thin-Kerf The transition from a circular sawmill operation to thin-kerf was a three week process where Honey Grove Hardwoods basically tore out all of their existing equipment from the debarker through to the wood chipper. After pouring concrete and adding the proper electrical connections, Honey Grove Hardwoods was back in business and ready to start sawing again. Since installing Wood-Mizer equipment in their operation, Honey Grove Hardwoods has been satisfied with their investment. “Thin-kerf technology with the WM4000 has been working extremely well, even in very cold weather and dealing with frozen

logs during the winter months,” Junk said. “The WM4000 has allowed us to focus on every aspect of the mill from logs to lumber without having to purchase as much raw material in this competitive market.” After the installation of their new Wood-Mizer equipment, Fowler describes the everyday operations of turning logs into lumber. “The Log deck helps ease the process of loading logs onto the WM4000,” he said. “From there, logs are cut on the headrig and then moved from the sawmill’s built-in conveyor to the three-way conveyor. Material is transferred from the conveyor to the green chain and then to the EG400 edger for a very smooth transition from logs to accurate lumber.” With this system, the sawyer no longer has to be the edger, which improves efficiency and quality of materials. Junk and Fowler admitted to working through a learning curve with the new equipment. “We were used to operating with a log carriage instead of the log placed directly on the bed of the headrig, so we had to learn how to use the controls and setworks of the WM4000,” Fowler said. “We also had to learn the correct adjustments and mill alignments in order to keep the band finely tuned in order to produce accurate lumber. I’d like to give Wood-Mizer a special thanks for their customer support and helping to educate us on these issues.” Although Honey Grove Hardwoods basically produces the same products as with the old circular sawmill, Junk said that they have re-evaluated what is cut out of each log with the huge savings coming from thin-kerf blades. “The larger kerf of the circle mill was causing us to purchase so much more raw material,” he said. “We were just turning more dollars and sawing logs faster, but not getting the yield returns we wanted on the lumber. Although our system looked productive, it wasn’t profitable.” Compared to their old circular sawmill operation, he said their yield has improved greatly with Wood-Mizer equipment. “The yield factor is amazing with thin-kerf

SAWLINES - WOOD-MIZER producing only one-third the waste of our circle sawmill, plus you can slab smaller and lighter which increases usable lumber.” Being able to produce more product from fewer logs also cuts down on transportation costs and increases the profit per log. “We are getting the same amount of lumber while using 25% less timber and raw materials, which in

turn, reduces transportation costs across the board,” Junk continued. He also noted that the WM4000’s ability to saw the log and return the lumber right off the dragback was a great feature and helped speed up their production. Honey Grove Hardwoods is also saving on blade maintenance. Thin-kerf blades are less costly to maintain and easy to replace if

they are damaged. “The nice thing about thin-kerf blades is that you can change a blade and be sawing again in two minutes,” Fowler said. Minimising downtime and repair costs has helped Honey Grove Hardwoods stay productive without having to wait on blade repairs or replacements. When it comes to advice, Junk encouraged others to talk to those who have transitioned from a circular to thin-kerf sawmill. “Do your research and visit someone

to talk about their experience of making a change,” he said. By visiting Wood-Mizer and taking advantage of thin-kerf technology, Junk and Fowler have positioned Honey Grove Hardwoods for success in the lumber industry for generations to come. “The WM4000 put us right back up to the competitive edge on utilizing and maximizing yields for our business,” Junk said.

Major US-based sawmill supplier USNR provides International Forest Industries with an update on its recent developments in the scanning and optimisation fields

U

SNR has arguably more technology tools in its kit for the global wood processing industry than any other supplier. In the past five years alone the group has launched a host of new advancements to assist sawyers in overcoming their specific challenges and improving their positions in the market. “As a master integrator offering mechanical, optimisation and controls designs, we have hundreds of processing lines operating with some of the most revolutionary configurations in existence,” the company stated.

PGLR: The ultimate turn on every log Griffin Lumber in Georgia, USA, had two older carriage lines that management wanted to replace with an optimised sharp chain configuration. Jesse Griffin, owner, explained his reasoning. “We had gotten to a point where we had done about all we could do in the mill, from a production and quality standpoint,” he said. “We knew if we wanted to take the next step forward we were going to have to do something big – there weren’t any small fixes.”

The company sourced a used USNR double-length infeed line and a used quad bandmill with reducer heads. USNR supplied the optimisation components comprising log rotation, Precision Geometric Log Rotation (PGLR), log optimisation and System Quality Inspection (SQI), with Smart TriCam sensors for scanning.

Optimising the line Griffin said they chose USNR because, “We know USNR can optimize a log better than anyone out there.” USNR’s MillExpert system uses proprietary Surface Feature Recognition automated log

classification. With a vast number of installations, it consistently and reliably ensures control over the breakdown process, yielding the highest value solutions based on characteristics such as knots, taper, flare, kink and sweep. Griffin related that with the carriages they had prior the log rotation had been essentially a manual process and he knew an optimised log turning system would do a better job for recovery. “When you are talking about measurements in degrees, I don’t think any machine without auto correction (PGLR) can get that log turned right,” he said.

USNR SAWLINES - Scanning & Optimisation Log rotation, correction The PGLR scanning system is located at the log turner machine section. The PGLR system monitors and corrects the log rotation process in real time to increase recovery by reducing log rotation error. Four SmartTriCam 3D sensors scan the log as it is being rotated. The actual log rotation path is compared with the autorotation optimiser’s projected log rotation path, to generate log rotation corrections. These log rotation corrections are transmitted to the PLC to correct the log rotations path on-the-fly as it continues through the log turner. Log rotation error is typically reduced by 50% or more. PGLR can be installed with a new MillExpert optimised primary breakdown system, or as an addition to an existing system. The PGLR software is straightforward with a host of diagnostic tools to help tune the mechanical as well as the PLC control systems. Graphs and on-screen indicators permit early detection of problems and overall performance at a glance. Reports

are generated to isolate issues relating to a particular class of log and to track longer term trends. PGLR can compensate for log turning errors due to: • Mechanical wear • Feed speed changes during the turn • Irregularly shaped and crooked logs • Transfers from one conveyor to next • Interaction with pressrolls • Slippage and hesitations. The final performance test numbers tell the story. “We ran 20 logs, and 19 out of 20 were off 3.19° and 18 out of 20 were off 2.84°,” Griffin said. “We also only lost 0.375% of the volume from the initial scan to the final solution scanner. I don’t think anyone can argue against those kinds of numbers. “It has exceeded my expectations,” Griffin continued. “It is a real testament to the whole system when you can scan a log, rotate it, impale it on the sharp chain, send it through the chip

heads and saws, and the log only moves 3°. “That is virtually not moving, and it really shocked me when the results started coming in. We’ve seen enormous uplift in productivity and yield. We are very satisfied.”

SAWMILL BIOVISION MAKES THE GRADE Demands for increased recovery, faster throughput, lower unit production costs and higher grade yields require more than geometrybased optimisation. USNR’s BioVision automated grading system for the green mill takes sawyers to the “next level” for recovering value from the process. “With BioVision you can edge

and trim for grade and value, you get significantly improved grade and recovery performance, capturing more value in the sawmill before the piece is further processed,” USNR stated. “Designed for transverse edgers and trimmers, BioVision makes value decisions driven by the accurate detection of biological and geometric defects using a combination of laser profile and visual defect scanning, combined with state-of-the-art optimisation.” BioVision’s modular design allows the sawyer to implement this capability easily with a bolt-on upgrade to the existing transverse scanner. Alternatively, installing the fully configured system right from the start can deliver the added benefits of value-based solutions.


USNR SAWLINES - Scanning & Optimisation Edger grade extraction provides value through re-manufacture or rip, based on the ultimate grade of the wood. For example a #3 appearance due to knots can be edged to #3 wane with confidence, which maximises recovery. Likewise, a low grade 2x8 may be worth more as two 2x4s, one of them being high grade. Trimmer grade extraction facilitates cut-in-two allowing a short, high grade piece without trimloss. ‘Candidate’ trim stock meeting specified characteristics for wane and knots can be targeted and sorted/routed differently for further unique action downstream. For example, by sorting for grade at the trimmer, more appropriate drying cycles can be selected for high or low grade products. The system utilises one of USNR’s latest vision sensors. Users can opt for BioLuma2900LVG or BioLuma2900LV for new scan frame installations, or BioLuma2900V for a bolt-on upgrade option. The BioLuma sensors use high resolution digital colour cameras and LED lighting to provide accurate imaging and increased reliability. The software incorporates algorithms from the proven Lineal High Grader (LHG) automated grading system, used for recognition and classification of visual grade defects in the dry mill.

HG Toler Lumber’s BioVision improves value USNR’s first production BioVision system was installed at HG Toler & Son Lumber in Arkansas, US. The mill was equipped with an optimised edger line that had been installed in 1993 and required updating to stave off obsolescence. The Toler team had been eyeing developments in sawmill visual grading technology. Confidence in USNR and satisfaction in the MillExpert optimisation suite swung the decision to the BioVision solution. John Grigsby, Mill Manager, was more than pleased with the results from implementing this technology at the Leola mill. “We’re noticing an uplift in the amount of C and D (grade) lumber,” he said. “It really excels when we cut wides, we can cut 70-80% C and D. That’s a real good judge

because we cut for grade only (cut to order), so the BioVision has to sort out what is grade and what isn’t, and when to make wides. “In terms of knot size classification, it’s doing real well. It allows us to cut for specific lengths and specific grades, of specific widths. It can pinpoint exactly what we want to produce. Now we’re more on-grade. BioVision allows us to maximise both volume and value.”

Evergreen Forest’s BioVision grades for shop and moulding Producers of shop and moulding products have new tools to choose from with the onset of BioVision sawmill grading targeted to these specialised products. Focus was recently brought to this market through cooperation between USNR and Tamarack Mill, Evergreen Forest sawmill of New Meadows, Idaho. “We were looking to rip to produce Moulding, #1, #2 and #3 shop,” Evergreen President Rodney

Krogh said. He explained that the mill’s existing edging operation was a manual system, looking at each flitch with the human eye to try to pull the grade out. “If we were going to continue to be a major factor in the pine market we needed to find a way to maximise recovery and value out of our pine logs.” He explained that grading for shop products is a lot different from grading for dimension lumber. With Shop products the system is looking for all the clear spacing between the knots, with no consideration for the sizing of the knots. Bob Arnold, USNR Sawmill Grade Scanning Product Manager, weighed in on what was required of the BioVision software. “The BioVision optimiser not only fits the appropriate cuttings into the clear/permissible areas of the flitch, but also requires an alignment of those cuttings in a manner that enables them to be recovered later at a secondary

Krogh is very pleased with the results he is seeing. “Our Moulding is up probably 8%, our #1 shop is up 4% and we are starting to get a higher percentage of #2 over #3 shop because the BioVision system is able to distinguish a #2 from a #3 and rip/edge for that.” “It will allow us to enter new markets. The BioVision scanner has also had a positive effect on our bigger doug/larch and white fir logs. The scanner can detect the larger knot sizes and rip the boards into wider products, allowing for the smaller knotted material in the narrow widths. We have seen the difference in the planer with our percentage of #3 dropping from the lack of bigger knots that had previously been down-grading our dimension.”

The BioVision system that was installed at the Kashima sawmill required a bolt-on retrofit to their existing Smart TriCam transverse scan frame using BioLuma 2900V sensors. Material processed ranges from 3-5 m long, 100-600 mm wide and 21-60 mm thick. Mr Ueda from Chugoku explained the BioVision investment strategy. “One major reason

was to increase productivity in post-processes (secondary manufacturing). We are using the BioVision system in two ways. One way is to reduce knots in our products for laminar materials. Providing less knotty material to the laminar mill offers better yield. “The second way is to provide a cut solution based on the position of the knots. We try to make green timbers from the flitches with more

knots, and try to make kiln-dried products from flitches with fewer knots. Our kiln-dried products require more costly secondary processing, so cutting around the knots while the material is green reduces the amount of postprocessing required, improving yield and reducing processing costs.”

or two years now, Microtec’s engineering team has gathered experience with the CAT-system, CT.LOG. Thanks to the recognition and digital reconstruction of the log’s internal structure, “the system boosts added value up to 20%”, according to Mr Giudiceandrea from Microtec. For example, if there are large knots in the log’s coat, the board falls out of the top quality production. In this case more wane can be approved, which increases the yield. In South America, the system has paid back in “less than one year”, Giudiceandrea said. And he was positively surprised by the detection rate of wood defects “not correlated to density”. Blueness, for example, is a characteristic distribution of water unveiled by the system.

Timber tracking Ideally, the CT.Log is installed at stem-working sawmills, right at the log yard. This configuration enables sawmillers to identify the optimal bucking solution. The internal structure of the logs is just as unique as a digital fingerprint. That’s why, with help of a simple X-ray system like TOMOLOG, the stems and sections can be accurately recognised and tracked.

New generation Goldeneye scanner Meanwhile, Microtec has continued to expand installations of its proven GoldenEye scanner. At the beginning of May last year at the Ligna trade fair in Germany, the company received considerable positive feedback for its latest generation of GoldenEye technology. Since then, interest in Microtec’s multi-sensory technology has continued to grow. The result some 21 global installations in less than a year across Europe, Scandinavia, the USA, South America, South Africa and New Zealand. GoldenEye has an extended and illustrious history. In fact, the first GoldenEye system was installed in 1992 for Holzwerk Pichler in South Tyrol. At the time, it was the first multi-sensory scanner for the dimensional measurement and the determination of the quality of boards. Microtec was able to combine various technologies such as infrared, laser and, for the first time, X-rays gaining a significant competitive advantage in implementing and controlling these technologies. Resolute Forest Products Resolute Forest Products bought a new high speed sawline complete with board profiling for one of its mills in Northern Quebec, Canada. The sawline is basically two lines in one. The smaller logs are processed by a ‘one pass’ DDM system including a 3D scanner, a flying log turner, a 4-head curve sawing canter, top and bottom profilers and a vertical gang saws edger, all in the same module. The larger cants are processed

for a secondary breakdown system, which includes a second 3D scanner, left and right profilers, a circular twin saws for sideboards production and a second vertical gangsaw edger. The line is designed to process logs from 50-400 mm (2.5-16 in) in diameters and 2.1-2.4 m (7-8 ft) in length with no additional edger system. It produces any boards from 1x3 to 2x6 at speed up to 230 m/minute.

Berneck Paineis e Serrados Berneck Paineis e Serrados purchased a complete greenfields sawmill its plant located in Curitibanos, Brazil. The mill is designed around a single main saw line to process 15 logs/minutes from 160-500 mm in diameters and 2.6-5.2 m in lengths. The line includes a first 3D log scanner, a flying log turner, an OLI-CS3 shifting and skewing log in-feed, chipper canter heads with pre-cut saws, a first twin vertical bandmill saw module and a second twin vertical bandmill saw module for the primary breakdown section. The secondary breakdown section includes a second 3D scanner for

Canfor Canfor purchased two sawlines for one of its mills in northern British Columbia, Canada. Both lines are designed to process logs at speed up to 180 m/minute from 100-425 mm (4-17 in) in diameters for the small log line and from 100-675 mm (4-27 in) for the large log one. Both lines process logs from 2.4-6.1 m (8-20 in) in lengths. Each line is running the same design, which includes a first 3D log scanner, a flying log turner, an OLI-CS3 shifting and skewing log in-feed, chipper canter heads and a quad circular saws module for the primary breakdown section. The secondary breakdown sections are made of a second 3D scanner for cants, a TBL3 shifting

and skewing cant in-feed and a horizontal curve sawing gangsaw edger complete with profiling chipping heads. The lines can produce any boards from 1x3 to 2x10 (2x6 maximum on the small log line). The project includes rotation confirmation scanners on both lines, optimisation for the edgers and a complete trimmersorter-stacker line for boards at the sawmill.

L&M Lumber L&M Lumber based in Vanderhoof, British Columbia, Canada, bought a complete sawline for its larger logs. The line is designed to process 35 logs/minutes from 875-525 mm (3.5-21) in diameters and from 1.9-2.4 m (6-8 ft) in lengths. The primary breakdown section includes a first 3D log scanner, a flying log turner, an OLI-CS3 shifting and skewing log in-feed, chipper canter heads and a ‘special’ six circular saws module – there are three saws on each side and the top arbor is actually pivoting in order to balance the cut from top and bottom arbors. A top reducer head also complete the saw module. The secondary breakdown section is made of a second 3D

scanner for cants, a TBL3 shifting and skewing cant in-feed and a horizontal curve sawing gangsaws edger complete with profiling chipping heads. The project also includes a rotation confirmation scanner, vision scanning systems for cracks and blue stain detections and all PLC controls. The line is in production.

Babine Forest Products Babine Forest Products, also in Bristish Columbia, bought a greenfields sawmill to replace the one that burned in January 2012. The mill is designed around two lines: a new large logs main sawline and a used one for smaller logs. The new line is designed to process logs at speed up to 200 m/minute from 150-555 mm (6-22 in) in diameters and from 2.4-6 m (8-20 ft) in lengths. The primary breakdown section includes a first 3D log scanner, a flying log turner, an OLI-CS3 shifting and skewing log in-feed, chipper canter heads, profiling chipper heads and a quad circular saws module. The top arbor is actually pivoting in order to balance the cut from top and

bottom arbors. A top reducer head also completes the saw module. The secondary breakdown section is made of a second 3D scanner for cants, a TBL3 shifting and skewing cant in-feed and a horizontal curve sawing gangsaw edger complete with profiling chipping heads. The mill will produce any boards from 1x4 to 2x10. The project includes all logs handling equipment, new optimisation and controls for the used sawline, an edger complete with optimisation and controls, a rotation confirmation scanner, trimmer optimisation, vision scanning systems for cracks and blue stain detections on all scanners and all PLC controls for the complete mill.

The line is designed to process 7.5-300 mm(3-12 in) in diameters and from 2.4-6 m (8-20 ft) in lengths at speed up to 200 m/minute. The logs are processed through a ‘one pass’ DDM system including a 3D scanner, a flying log turner, a first vertical canter, a

second horizontal canter, top and bottom profilers and a vertical gang saws edger. The line can produce any boards from 1x3 to 2x6. The project includes a rotation confirmation scanner and all PLC controls. A similar installation is set for JD Irving’s Maine sawmill in the USA by June.

Heating costs are under attack from a range of innovative kilns down under

S

olar Dryers Australia (SDA), based in NSW, Australia, is a leading designer/ manufacturer of a range of unique Solar/Gas timber kilns. These kilns have gained wide acceptance in the past few years with 150 units sold in Australia and abroad. Sizes ranges from 10 m3 to 100 m3 and these kilns are characterised by heating costs of well under half that of any other type of kiln, according to the manufacturer, while the auxiliary heating system ensures that drying times are the same as any other kiln, regardless of climate. The smallest kilns in the range are the SG 10 and SG 20. ‘SG’ stands for solar/gas and ‘10’ or ‘20’ refers to nominal m3 capacity in 25 mm boards. These kilns are based on 6.1 m (20 ft) or 12.2 (40 ft) refrigerated shipping containers, which are ideal for the purpose as they are well insulated and sealed. All inside surfaces are either stainless steel or aluminium.

SDA has also converted containers for heat treatment units. ISPM 15 is an internationally required standard for any export packaging, and is aimed at killing insect larvae. The SDA unit automatically performs the heat process and produces a certificate that satisfies the AQIS requirements. Another conversion was a pine cone dryer for a seed orchard in Mt Gambier. The drying process opens the cones to release the seeds. A current project is for another dryer

for pine cones, but this time for pinus pinea cones. The seeds of this tree are the product known as ‘pine nuts’ used in cooking. Other dryers on the drawing board are for concrete products, coffee, and variety of fruits. Container kilns are loaded using a track and trolley system. The stainless steel trolley is rolled out onto a fixed track outside the kiln where it is loaded by forklift and then pushed into the kiln. The kilns are shipped to site with all the components packed inside

the container. Re-assembly takes around half-a-day before the kiln is ready for operation. No concrete footings are necessary – these kilns can be mounted on any reasonably level surface. The advantage of these smaller kilns is the ease of assembly (about 5 hours) and the ability to

move them to a different location at a later date if necessary. The heating system in these small kilns is identical to SDA’s larger kilns. An array of solar hot water panels is mounted on the roof of the kiln or on an adjacent building. Water is pumped in a closed circuit between the panels and the heat exchanger inside

the kiln. Heat is extracted from the water, which then returns to the panel array for re-heating. An instantaneous gas water heater in the circuit heats the water if no solar power is available. Once a kiln temperature is selected at the control box, the system automatically maintains this temperature using either solar or gas or a combination of both.

iomass consumption and production is today a well established driver subsidiary of forestry operations and a major independent business in its own right. Governments have maintained their renewable energy subsidy focus and the push for a greater input from non-polluting or renewable sources of fuel is unrelenting. This phenomena began in Scandinavia and has quickly flooded Europe and the then the US, through the developing world. China has also made green fuel a major focus of its most recent five-

year plan and so chip imports have touched new records. The growing use of chips as fuel has required suppliers to provide chippers that are not only powerful but are flexible – to meet the variety of chip uses no in play – and accurate – to meet the precise requirements of various green fuel combustion systems. Power plus flexibility plus accuracy is today the norm for the chipping or biomass professional and, as this year’s Chipper technology review shows, manufacturers are rising to the challenge.

Peterson continues to refine in-field chipping with its 4800F chain flail debarker and 5900E disc chipper combination. The popular pair can be found producing clean pulp and paper chips around the world. Recently, these machines have seen excellent success in eucalyptus plantations in South Africa. The machines have been set-up to run with low chain speeds to promote longer chain life and lower running costs, making clean pulp and paper chips with very low bark content. The pair’s compact and nimble

Peterson 4800F chain flail debarker Continuing Peterson’s long history of innovation, this sixth generation design has the features that clean chip operations demand. The Peterson 4800F multiple log

delimber/debarker is designed to be used in tandem with whole tree chippers to produce high quality pulp chips. Capable of processing multiple logs from 50-580 mm (2-23 in) in diameter, the 4800F increases productivity while reducing bark content, product handling time, and fibre loss. Powered by a 350 hp (261 kW) CAT C9 Tier III or Tier IV engine, the 4800F meets all US, Canadian, and EU emission regulations. The 4800F features upper and lower flails, direct drive lower in-feed and out-feed rolls, and a

floating direct drive upper feed roll. The bark pusher has been redesigned and is now 1.5 m (5 ft) wide. The machine also features a dedicated 511 litre hydraulic oil tank, and a 662 litre fuel tank to allow the 4800F to run an entire shift without refuelling. The 4800F is controlled by an IQAN operating system, which provides the operator the information to efficiently operate the unit. The IQAN system provides self-diagnostics for faulty sensors and open circuits, and can communicate complete engine and

system parameters. With a retractable gooseneck, the highway legal 4800F is easily moved between jobs and has a curb weight of 19,350 kg (42,660 lb). The four fixed landing gear (with floating pads) allow the 4800F’s operating height to be adjusted. The operator can operate the machine with a wireless remote which also can pair with the Peterson 5900E disc chipper.

The 5900E has a large feed throat that is capable of accepting up to a 563 mm (23 in) diameter tree or multiple smaller diameter stems. The 5900E has a standard three knife disc, and is also available with an optional four knife disc. The standard three pocket disc can produce chips from 5/8 to 1 1/4 in (16-32 mm) in length, and the four pocket disc can produce chips from 1/2 to 1 in (1,325 mm) in length. pitch to match the engine cooling requirements. At full pitch the fan power requirement is 53 hp (39.5 kW) so adjusting the fan pitch can significantly reduce fuel costs over the life of the machine. Cooling air is directed over the engine to minimise any dust build up on the engine. A twelve channel radio remote control permits control of the 5900E by the loader operator. The machine can be also controlled from the control box on the chipper. Suitable for everything from large land-clearing jobs to green-waste recycling, the Vermeer Tier IVi (Stage IIIB) HG4000, HG6000 and HG6000TX horizontal grinders include a number of features that make them ideal for a wide array of operations. base to fuel pellets, the drum design creates a more useful, higher quality chip,” Marshall said. A major advantage of the new chipper drum is serviceability. A number of the high wear areas of the drum are protected by hardened steel parts providing longer life. These hardened steel parts are also replaceable via threaded fasteners to reduce labour costs and minimise downtime. Helping to minimise operator cost, screws have replaced the need for Babbitt on the knives. A user can now simply adjust the knife via thread fasteners quickly and safely rather than melting Babbitt. DuraTech Industries has released its much anticipated TC-15 tree chipper. The TC-15 is the larger option in the DuraTech tree chipper line. With an option of a 122 hp (91

kw) CAT C4.4 or 139 hp (103.7 kw) CAT C4.4 diesel engine and PT-Tech clutch, the powerful TC-15 can grind logs up to 375 mm (15 in) in diameter. “We are excited to offer a larger tree chipper with the same advanced and powerful technology utilised in our grinders,” Bob Strahm of DuraTech Industries said. “Our TC-12 tree chipper entered us into a new market, and now we are expanding further into this territory.” The TC-15 features a springloaded feed wheel with adjustable down pressure, an optional height sensor that automatically adjusts the feed roller to material size and an optional hydraulic gathering winch. A hydraulic two feed roller system feeds the four 107.5 mm (4.5 in) knives designed to chip wood waste. This high-powered unit discharges debris 360° from the hydraulic rotating adjustable chip spout, allowing the user to alter chip disposal. The TC-15 has multiple safety features like the innovative hopper safety light bars with easy and instant shut down. There are also two E-stop switches, a disc hood closed proximity switch and a breakaway brake switch to ensure the safety of the operator. “Safety is a major concern when operating chippers,” Strahm said.

DuraTech Industries has released it’s much anticipated TC-15 tree chipper

This unit is compact measuring 1985 mm x 5120 mm (79 in x 208 in). Jenz is converting its large chipper truck models to the new Euro 6 exhaust emission standard. There are numerous detailed improvements and the 540 hp version has been subsequently discontinued.

Conversion to Euro 6 Hardly any other manufacturer has influenced the development of the HGV-mounted chipper as much as Jenz. The term ‘chipper truck’ is nowadays a synonym for all vehicles of this type. The bestselling Jenz model is the HEM 583 R chipper truck, which

is effectively the grandson of the original chipper truck from 2006. The vehicle was first presented together with the new HEM 583 chipper series at the Agritechnica last year in Hanover. Before then, this chipper truck was available with two engine variations, with 480 hp and 540 hp. However, with the introduction of the new Euro 6 exhaust emission standard, HGV manufacturer MAN has decided to drop the 540 hp version from its program. For this reason the new Euro 6 chipper truck will be available only with a 480 hp

engine. However, Jenz has fitted the vehicle with many new features to further increase efficiency.

Optimised chipper The new chipper truck now carries a new chipper on its back, the HEM 583. It replaces the most sought-after mobile chipper model to date, the HEM 582. In this case, the designers have launched a completely new machine but the chipper has been optimised in only a few aspects. The counter cutter is now located higher in order to change the chipping angle on the

HEM 583, which has enabled the chipping quality to be improved. Furthermore, Jenz has optimised the draw-in table. The structure is now more stable and the hydraulically-foldable cowl is omitted. In the HEM 583 it is permanently integrated. This means that the material draw-in has been improved. The new tooth profile on the draw-in roller also plays its part in this.

Hydraulic blower as series The most important innovation is a hydraulically-driven outfeed blower, which is now a standard feature on the HEM 583. This technology offers many advantages: • The ejection blower speed can be infinitely varied and controlled independently of the chipper rotor speed, which means it can always be adapted to the working conditions. This reduces the fines content of the chippings and also reduces wear on the machine • If required, the blower can be centrally located between the HGV driver’s cab and the chipper. This gives the operator the facility to overload the chippings both to the front and to the rear without having to change the position of the vehicle • The ejection flap on the blower tube is now conical so that the material flow is more bundled. This means that the chippings can be thrown more accurately and with fewer losses even over large distances

Improvements on the chipper truck The power flow in the chipper truck has been optimised by using a hydraulically-driven blower.

In this superstructure variation, the chipper is driven by the HGV motor. This is a particularly efficient solution that has become established over many years. The drive force for the HEM 583 hydraulic components is now taken off upstream of the auxiliary drive for the chipper. The transmission is put under less strain because

it only has to withstand the force required to operate the chipper rotor. Furthermore, Jenz was also able to crucially improve the operational reliability of all chipper truck models. The standard cooler supplied with the MAN HGV reaches its limits in a dusty environment and at high outside

temperatures. Fine wood dust blocks the cooler and the machine runs hot. To prevent this, all chipper trucks are now fitted as series with a hydraulically-driven reversing fan from Cleanfix from now on. The airflow through the cooler is automatically adapted to the requirements. This means that the cooler is blown free at regular intervals. The entire cooler package has been completely sealed off so that the airflow can be specifically controlled and so that suction of dust from the side is prevented. A fine-mesh net in front of the coolers keeps coarse particles away. The solution enables the operator to use the complete performance potential of his chipper truck under any conditions. Komptech presented four new machines – the Axtor 6010, the Crambo direct, the Topturn X and the Hurrifex – at the IFAT trade fair in Munich just gone. As always with Komptech, it was customer requirements that drove these developments. And the results are impressive. The centrepiece of this year’s IFAT presentation was no doubt the Axtor 6010, the little brother of the proven Axtor 8012. Numerous

components have been downsized to fit the lower power, like the feed ramp, intake opening and chipping drum, which in no way diminishes utility – in fact, the company claims it does the opposite. “The Axtor 6010 is the right size for most facilities and operators, who can use it to capacity,” the Komptech said. “This naturally also has a very advantageous effect on pricing.” The Axtor 6010 rounds out Komptech’s offerings in the area of biomass processing. In fast-running shredder mode it generates material for composting, while in slow-running chipper mode it makes fuel for heating plants. Depending on the input material, it chips or shreds with shredder blades. In addition to “perfect” functionality, it shines with simple loading, resistance to contraries, great service and maintenance access, and naturally the mobility that comes with being available as 3-axle trailer, tractortrailer or tracked versions. Meanwhile, Komptech has emphasised the productivity of its Chippo family of chippers. The operator sits in the comfortable cab on a converted passenger seat and can concentrate fully on working with the powerful machine. The loading crane variant with integrated crane cab offers a perfect view from above. The Chippo 5010 Cdt (t for ‘turnable’) is a new version. The chipping unit is mounted on a solid turntable and swivels hydraulically through 260°. “With several versions and numerous options, the Chippo 5010 Cd direct can be configured exactly for its task,” Komptech said.

Chippo 8010 C – for professionals The Chippo 8010 C is the most powerful machine in the Chippo series. Powered by a 780 hp Cat auxiliary engine, the 8010 C produces up to 320 stacked cm3/h. “No chipper is more efficient,” the manufacturer claimed. “Its aggressive feed system, large, open two-speed drum, speedadjustable blower and energy-saving discharge conveyor add up to top quality chippings, in high volume, at very low cost.” It is mounted on a tough MAN 4-axle truck, with 480 hp engine and optional Hydrodrive (shiftable all-wheel drive) to negotiate steep

CHIPPERS Whole tree chippers from Bandit Industries have been made available with a versatile micro-chip drum, designed to produce dimensional wood chips approximately 1/4 in in size. This drum can also be easily reconfigured to produce standard chips, as well as large “maxi-chips” to serve multiple markets with the same machine. The micro-chip drum is available on the models 2590, 3090, 3590 and 3590XL, and features double the cuts per revolution compared to a standard Bandit drum. Micro-chips are typically the chips of choice for wood pellet production, as the smaller chip dries quicker and more evenly, allowing for more efficient pellet production with higher energy yields. Larger chips are also favoured by certain fuel wood markets, but regardless of the market, uniformity in chip size is vital. The new drum works in conjunction with Bandit’s Card Breaker System, which is designed to prevent oversize chips from exiting the drum. The result is a very uniform wood chip that can be specifically sized for individual fuel wood markets. These changes do not affect throwing power or production, nor are any special chip accelerators required. “Bandit wasn’t the first manufacturer to enter the market with a dedicated micro-chip machine, but that was on purpose,” Christopher Smith, Bandit’s Marketing and Communications Director, said. “The extra time we spent on research and development allowed us to fine-tune the process without taking away the durability or production Bandit customers have come to expect.” Joedy Cahoon, owner of J & R Cahoon Logging in Bellhaven, North Carolina, is a third generation logger. His operation is stronger than ever due in part to a Bandit 3590 whole tree chipper with the micro-chip drum that he uses to supply one of the largest manufacturers of processed biomass fuel in North America. “You can tell just by looking at the Bandit

machines that they put some real thought into their design,” he said. “We were running another machine at the time – Bandit didn’t have a microchipper out yet when we started. “I went and watched a friend with another machine run his, then I demoed some other micro-chippers. My local Bandit dealer got in touch with me, told me Bandit had their microchipper ready, and they brought a 3590 out to our job site. I just fell in love with it.” Cahoon’s 3590 is a 450 mm (30 in) capacity whole tree chipper with an 800 hp CAT C27. The micro-chip drum actually boasts 16 knives, giving double the cuts per revolution compared to a normal chipper. Despite these extra cuts, he still packs chip trailers in about 12 minutes and generally throws 20 loads on a set of knives. When Cahoon’s brother Ronnie secured a similar contract for micro-chips, he also turned to Bandit for a solution and purchased a 3590 of his own. Having formerly worked with his brother, Ronnie branched out seven years ago to form his own company in the area – Cahoon Brothers Logging. They still help each other out, and now that they each have a 3590 microchipper, they’re both in a great position to supply the largest exporter of wood pellets in the southern US. While the Cahoon brothers work in North Carolina, another operation has found success with Bandit’s 3590 a bit further south, serving standard and micro-chip markets in the state of Florida. “Right now our main market is a cement plant, where we started out needing the microchips for their old coal boiler,” Jimbo Nathe of RJ Nathe & Sons out of Dade City, Florida, said. This family operation has been in business since 1957, with Nathe working alongside his brothers and father every day. “The other market we’re dealing with is a local power plant,” Nathe said. “They don’t necessarily need as small a chip as what we’re

Greenmech Arborist 150 chomps wood waste across British services The National Memorial Arboretum (NMA) in Staffordshire, England, has nearly 200 memorials dedicated to all divisions of the military and civil service institutes, such as the police, fire, ambulance and the RNLI. Its 61 ha site is now home to more than 42,000 trees that require a lot of maintenance. The purchase of a GreenMech Arborist 150, 26hp wood chipper,

has been the solution to the resultant waste. When maintenance of the oak, ash, willow and scott’s pines started, the woody waste was usually hauled to a corner of the site and burned – not a very popular solution on a site that welcomes more and more visitors each year. However, the purchase of a GreenMech wood chipper has brought several solutions. Not only has the unwelcomed burning been stopped but the wood and brash is now chipped and used around the site. One example is its use as mulch around the trees to act as a weed

suppressant and help moisture retention. Another has been the placement of edging boards filled with wood chippings around monuments to give an easy to maintain, low cost pathway that blends into the area. Being a memorial centre there is added pressure to keep noise to a minimum, so this was one of the buying criteria. “GreenMech has focussed on developing machines that emit lower noise levels than most others and along with its chipping capabilities, made the Arborist 150 an obvious choice for us,” Assistant Curator James Shallcross said. The NMA opened its doors in 2001 and was developed from the site of an old sand and gravel quarry. The infill is made up of inert material such as building rubble and spoil taken from the development of the M6 toll road and is generally of poor nutritional quality. This and regular flooding from the nearby River Tame, does not make for ideal growing conditions and poses difficult issues on a day-to-day basis for

Shallcross and his team. The purchase of the chipper amongst other equipment has helped the NMA to manage some of these difficulties. Meanwhile, the Arborist 150 has made an impact at Manchester Airport. Manchester Airport is a significant landowner and the third busiest airport in the UK. Hugh Bunting goes back 34 years with the site and is the Landscaping & Habitat Manager, looking after 140 ha of landscaping and green space on the non-operational external areas. His remit covers ornamental plantings around the terminal; ornamental lawns; native structure tree plantings and woodland on the periphery; agricultural grass; field hedges; wetlands; sites of scientific interest and conservation areas. “Several years ago, all the landscaping etcetera was carried out by an in-house team,” bunting said. “So when the work went out to an external contractor in 2008, all of the equipment went as well. So when it was decided in August 2013 to bring it back in-house, we

The company has both the wheeled and tracked versions of the GreenMech Arborist 150 and told Bunting they were very impressed. “I hadn’t had a [demonstration] of the machine but speaking to my ARB colleagues really swung it for me and I told Kevin Pickering at Turner Groundcare we were very interested in the Arborist 150,” Bunting said. “It’s brilliant – it’s just what we wanted. “We took delivery of it in September last year and the first thing I noticed was how very quiet it was compared to the old chipper we had, and that’s important because some of the areas we’re

using it in are close to passengers and members of the public.” Bunting chose the 34 hp model because it more suited the range of work on the site. They perform a constant thinning out maintenance program within woodland and structure planting – any idea of burning would be a ‘no go’ due to the use of the site. They use the Arborist 150 for a whole range of material like medium size trees and smaller softer shrubbery. The resultant chippings are stored and used on site for the shrubland areas. Upon delivery, Turner Groundcare carried out an operator familiarisation program in conjunction with GreenMech, which consisted of an hour talking through operation and safe use. As Bunting’s background is in amenity horticulture, he also advises with the airside based team on fertiliser application and PH levels of the 260 ha of airfield grass.

The 375 mm (15 in) capacity RC1522G chipper is an economical solution for daily chipping needs, offering an excellent combination of chipping power, large feed opening, and easy maintenance, according to the machine’s manufacturer, Rayco. When all the wood material has been chipped, the operator can easily fold the unit up again with its in-feeder (including stabilising supports) and transport it to the next location. chips and hence made the Morbark 36/40 an extremely attractive option. “This newly reengineered 40/36 microchipper is the solution,” he said. “We are able to produce a far superior product, producing 95-98% acceptable microchips at volumes of more than 70 t/hour.” With an average fuel consumption of 2.25 t/gallon of microchips produced, the Morbark

40/36 microchipper allows owners to reduce costs and maximise profits. In customer tests, 95-98% the microchips produced passed through a 1⁄2 in grate, and 72-74% passed through a 1⁄4 in grate. These microchips are vital for pellet mills, eliminating the need to regrind the wood fibre prior to pelletising.

erviceability and comfort are once again themes of this year’s feller buncher technology review, along with the return to higher power, higher production machines from the key suppliers. Komatsu meanwhile has focused largely on improved engine capacities and efficiencies, as well as greater versatility. But perhaps the most interesting advancement has come from North American manufacturer, Tigercat, which has developed an optional

feller director boom system with integrated stick boom hose guarding designed to work with the new, hard-wearing directional felling head. The feller director provides an alternative solution for many applications where a conventional hot saw equipped feller buncher doesn’t quite get the job done. Komatsu’s purpose-built XT-series track feller bunchers deliver superior manoeuvrability, multifunction capability and highproduction in the most demanding

forest environments, according to Komatsu US Marketing Manager, Steve Yolitz. “The pioneering design of Komatsu’s XT-series feller buncher revolutionised mechanical felling with the industry’s first engineup four-way cab levelling track carrier,” he said. This front/rear/ side leveling capability helps increase mechanical harvesting production, reduces required swing torque on slopes, and maximises operator comfort while working on slopes.

The original design introduced the first setback boom, which enhances stability and manoeuvrability. This feature also provides an “unexcelled ability” to work in confined spaces. The head can work very close to the machine, which maximises the carrier’s full lift capacity and allows the operator to handle large trees more effectively. The carrier design also introduced the first “true” multifunction cutting and traveling performance with independent hydrostatic track drives. Coupled

with Komatsu’s ‘zero-tail swing’ design, the XT-series machines have “exceptional manoeuvrability” in dense forest conditions. The XT-series has been engineered and produced at Komatsu’s Chattanooga Manufacturing Operations (USA) since 2009. Komatsu’s focus since that time has been ongoing product design and manufacturing process updates that have resulted in many significant improvements to the XT product line. The XT-series models include the XT430-2, and the cab-leveling models XT430L-2, XT445L-2 and XT450L-2. All models now feature continuous 360º cab rotation as standard. The XT450L features a larger leveling system designed for severe applications in big timber. Base operating weights for the machines range from 27,685 kg (61,035lb) to 31,545 kg (269,545). Each of the models is powered by an 8.3 liter 224kW (300 peak hp) Cummins Tier 3 engine. These Komatsu machines have a high capacity cooling package with thermostatically controlled auto-reversing fans to keep hydraulic oil cool in high production applications. Cooler oil results in improved engine and extended hydraulic component life; reduced maintenance; and improved fuel economy. An optional auxiliary oil cooler is available to meet the most demanding operating conditions. A new remote oil filter location with easier access improves serviceability. The XT-series swing-system drives run in a sealed grease bath for improved pinion lubrication with hardened gears for longer life. The standard 45 cc swing motor provides 63 kNm (47,100 lb/ft) of swing torque, while an optional

This combination is proving to be an extremely low cost-per-tonne solution for eucalyptus because of the fast shear cycles and extremely efficient carrier hydraulics. In addition, the shear is a lower cost, lower maintenance alternative to a disc saw felling head and a shear equipped machine burns less fuel than a disc saw. In rocky or abrasive soil types, the benefits of the shear are even more pronounced. The ability of the 2000 shear to accumulate large, parallel bunches also improves skidder productivity.

LS855C feller director configuration New in 2014 is the LS855C shovel logger “with a twist”, according to the manufacturer. Tigercat has developed an extremely durable directional felling head, the FD5195, and along with it, an optional feller director boom system for the LS855C with integrated stick boom hose guarding. The LS855C as a feller director is very effective in a number of applications that are not an ideal fit for a conventional hot saw equipped feller buncher. In steep slope applications, the LS855C can fell and extract independently, fell for a yarder, or fell and bunch for a skidder. With a 950 mm cutting capacity, the directional felling head becomes especially advantageous when steep slopes are combined with

oversize timber as the operator can avoid the extra time and machine repositioning associated with double cutting. In addition, the LS855C has a unique closed loop swing drive with energy recovery for high performance and improved fuel economy.

Drive-to-tree feller bunchers Tigercat builds four drive-to-tree feller buncher models for the full range of thinning and final felling duties in favourable terrain. The 718E is the lowest cost, lightest weight, simplest and most agile machine in the line-up. The 720E and 724E are versatile for thinning and clear fell applications and the 224 kW 726E works in terrain and tree sizes that many would consider track buncher territory. From the 720E up, the machines are equipped with the high capacity cross-flow cooling system and a thermostat controlled variable speed, reversible cooling fan. The rear frame is compartmentalised for clear separation of engine, hydraulics and cooling system components. ast year was a busy one for PrimeTech – a year of trading excellence and design innovation, which started with the PT-175. The PT-175 is the smallest track mulcher of the PT-Series, the only model on the market to offer a high-performance 160 hp engine in a compact size. In early 2013, the PT-175 was launched on the European market with a demonstration tour that covered Germany, France, Belgium and Sweden. The PT-175 mulcher also featured prominently in major international exhibitions worldwide such as Bauma, Agritechnica and Elmia Wood. In the second half of 2013, the PT-175 was launched in North America, again through a series of nationwide demonstrations and trade fair presence, most notably at the prestigious ICUEE. “The PT-175 is an impressively innovative mulcher, built around cutting-edge technology,” the manufacturer stated. “All components are easy to access

Key technical improvements included, but were not limited to: • New cab (fully tilting, as in the PT-175 model and equipped with LED headlights and a flat-faced front windshield instead of the curved windshield of previous models) • New Berco-quality D4 oscillating undercarriage with ground clearance increased by 6 cm (2 in) from 40 cm to 46 cm (18 in) • Optimised easy access to all components for easy maintenance. A tracked vehicle as strong as a mammoth Machine experts Doppstadt are letting their DW3080 K3 shredder flex its new steely muscles at this year’s IFAT. From 5th to 9th May, the mobile unit will be displaying its skills in VDMA’s demonstration area. Complemented by newly added star-screen modules to the rear, the DW 3080K3 efficiently processes anything from wastewood to mixed construction waste. Weighing in at a hefty 50 tonnes, this mammoth amongst shredders can mix it with the biggest of its kind as well as the most difficult tasks required. The machine is quickly ready for use due to its hydraulic fold-out rear conveyor. A multi-function display provides information about the machine data and is easy to use - including by remote control. Doppstadt have reinforced the reversible rotor and hydraulic comb of the shredder and by doing so, increased the machine’s stability and durability even further. The rotor teeth are made from wearresistant steel and tear the material through the shredding comb. In the event of foreign objects, the comb opens automatically to prevent any damage. A powerful direct drive provides high throughput and at the same time minimum fuel consumption. For maintenance

and service work, both the comb door and the comb itself can easily be folded out, which simplifies the changing of the comb and any tools. The self-cleaning cooler is easily accessible but runs particularly quietly by means of a large fan wheel running at low speed. The steady rotary motion of the star elements loosens up and circulates the material to be screened during its transportation along the deck and the different speeds of the individual star driveshafts pull the material apart for better screening. The grain size can be varied by choosing different star sizes and by changing the infinitely adjustable speeds on the screening deck elements. Finally, a fine screen deck separates the remaining screening material into medium and fine fractions. The second, medium-sized fraction of the screened material is delivered to the front while the third fraction of screening material is delivered laterally via a fine grain discharge belt.

High purity of material in three sieved fractions The new DHS 812 rear star-screen unit sorts the pre-shredded material into three different

fractions. To ensure that the separated materials obtain a very high level of purity, the screening material is firstly transported on a shortened rear conveyor to a coarse screening deck. There, the medium sized grain falls through the interstices and crevices in the star-screen. The coarse particles are transported from each starscreen shaft to the next and are then finally ejected laterally by an oversize particle cross-conveyor. As an option, this material can be transported by a return conveyor back to the DW 3080K3’s in-feed hopper. The evenly rotating motion of the star elements loosens up and circulates the feed material during transport and the different

speeds of the individual star shafts pull the screen material apart. The grain size can be varied by different star sizes and infinitely adjustable speed controls of the screening deck. Finally, a fine screen deck separates the remaining screening material into medium and fine grain. The second, mediumsized screen material fraction is discharged at the front whilst the third screen material fraction is discharged laterally via a fine grain discharge conveyor. Doppstadt solves the problem of separating material in rough terrain During IFAT from 5th to 9th May, the Doppstadt Group will be showing the new SM 620K screening machine suitable for the separation of sand, gravel or general waste. This track-mounted model complements its wheelmounted SM 620 sister model and operates safely in rough terrains such as gravel pits, quarries or landfill sites. Doppstadt will be demonstrating the machine, which can be controlled via remote control directly from the cabin of a digger or wheeled loader, in the VDBUM demonstration area. This model ensures the safe uninterrupted operation of screening activities, even under difficult conditions or on rough ground. With its low transportation height of just 3.4m, this machine can be transported quickly from

site to site by low loader over all standard traffic routes. The SM 620K track-mounted model retains all the operator conveniences in ease of operation, maintenance and service when compared with its wheel-mounted mobile SM 620 sibling and can be operated with either a screen drum or a star-screen deck. This allows an exceptionally broad range of applications in mobile screening technique, ranging from dry, freeflowing feed material to damp and cohesive materials. The change between the drum and star screen deck can be achieved without tools and is done within about an hour. The screening drum is 5.5m long, has a diameter of 2m and a screening area of 30.2m2. Aperture size and shape (within the drum) are matched against the material to be screened. Customers can

choose between drums made of perforated plate having a diameter of holes from 6mm and upwards or drums with a removable wire mesh from 4mm in size. The star-screen deck has a screening area of 6m2 and allows a material screening range of between 10 and 150mm (depending on the version). An integrated feeder screw provides uniform feeding onto the screening deck. With optional equipment, this screening machine can be prepared for further special applications.

For example with a hydraulically foldable stone grid, a vibrating screen or a star screen being placed on the loading hopper, it is well equipped for the separation of coarse materials. Supplementary roller magnets on the discharge belts allow for FE-metal separation, while further upgrading with air separators enables the separation of any light material from the oversize grain. John Deere’s user-friendly JDLink machine monitoring system is now available for all makes of stationary and mobile forestry equipment with two new Universal Telematics subscription levels. JDLink Locate and JDLink Express boast valuepriced hardware and subscription costs. “JDLink Locate and JDLink Express allow logging professionals to track and protect all pieces of equipment on their jobsites with the same JDLink application they use for the rest of their John Deere machines,” Tom Trone, Director of Global WorkSight Solutions with John Deere Construction & Forestry, said. “The hardware can be installed on both powered and non-powered assets and will keep companies informed on location, help protect jobsite assets, and boost profits.” JDLink Locate allows a logger to access asset location and set-up a geofence around a machine, so they can be alerted if it travels outside the virtual boundary. Morbark® takes safety to the next level New ChipSafe™ Operator Safety Shield and Training Requirements Increase Brush Chipper Safety Recognizing that the tree care industry has inherent risks to personnel, Morbark, Inc., will now offer the ChipSafe™ Operator Safety Shield as an option on the 12-inch through 18-inch capacity models of its Beever™ brush chippers. Consisting of plates mounted directly to the sides of the brush chipper’s infeed chute and used in conjunction with special work gloves and ankle straps (or straps on both the ankles and wrists), the ChipSafe Operator Safety Shield stops the chipper’s feeding mechanism if the operator’s hands or feet enter the defined ChipSafe sensing zone in the infeed chute, protecting the operator from possible injury. The chipper’s feeding mechanism is restarted with a simple swipe of the operator’s ChipSafe glove or wrist strap across a reset box located on the outer side of the infeed chute, so high productivity is maintained. “Morbark and our dealers are deeply committed to safety,” said John Foote, Morbark VP of Sales and Marketing. “We feel strongly that the ChipSafe Operator Safety Shield will help protect our customers and their employees from injury.” The ChipSafe will be available

care and landscape employers, employees and equipment manufacturers; and many chipper operators receive little formal training on how to use the equipment and avoid accidents. With support from Morbark and other equipment manufacturers, TCIA has developed the Chipper Operator Specialist credentialing program, as part of its Tree Care Academy®. The workshop covers hazard awareness and procedures for hooking up, setting up, operating and maintaining a chipper. Ponsse presents harvester head range for new size class Ponsse’s harvester head range has been extended with a new size class. The company introduced its new harvester head models, Ponsse 10 and Ponsse H8 with a top saw, at the Oregon Logging Conference in the USA. The harvester heads are designed for the demanding harvesting conditions of North America. The H10 opens up a new market for Ponsse – it is a heavy-duty processing and harvesting head for track-based machines weighing over 25 t. With the new size class of harvester heads, Ponsse is responding to the harvesting needs of local harvesting entrepreneurs. “Our local customers are primarily harvesting logs using the cut-to-length method and forest machines with rubber tyres,” Jarmo Vidgrén, Ponsse Sales and Marketing Director, said. “However, sometimes the trees are so thick that track-based machines with processing heads are required. The fact that Ponsse Bear harvesters and Ponsse Elephant forwarders are even used for thinning gives a good idea of the conditions in the USA. In other industrial harvesting markets, these models are used for regeneration felling. “We have a lot of long-standing customer relationships in the USA, dating back to the early 90s. Cooperation with customers has always been good, which is also

wedish Crane manufacturer Cranab is making one of the biggest-ever structural deals in the forest technology industry and creating a group with products for the entire chain from scarification to clear cutting. The purpose of the deal is to create an internationally competitive group with forest technology offerings throughout the entire chain from scarification to clear cutting. Other motives include increased production and exports and the company’s wish to pursue its already established path towards eco-driven, innovative product development. Taken overall, this structural deal

means that Cranab, via its subsidiaries, will add some 50 employees bringing the total to about 200 and increase its sales by approximately SEK100 million (€11 million) to around SEK350 million (€40 million). Part of the deal consists of Swedish world-leader Bracke Forest becoming a wholly-owned subsidiary of Cranab. Bracke Forest manufactures machines for forest regeneration and felling and has production facilities in Bräcke outside Östersund, Sweden. This feller buncher is very impressive. The owner has been pleased with fuel consumption and the speed and power of this feller buncher is more than adequate in his thinning and logging operations. The operators are also making positive comments about the cab interior which has recently been much improved. This new 6-deck jet veneer dryer, located at Martco, Chopin, LA, is the largest dryer to date in the southern yellow pine region. This dryer will accomplish the equivalent production of two dryers, reducing labor costs by one-half. At the same time it will reduce thermal energy consumption by 10%, and exhaust fugitive emissions by 15%.

This mill is located in Ireland.

The dryer was erected off-line, and once complete it was towed into place and connected to all services under a projected expedited schedule. This allowed Martco the advantage of choosing the optimum time to disrupt its production schedule to install the additional capacity, and allowed the plant to utilize the existing building structure to house the new dryer.
