Bring out the bulls

T

he fortunes of the global logging sector, from a macro level at least, were broadcast recently through the financials of two of the industry’s leading manufacturers from either side of the Atlantic – and it made very pleasant reading, indeed.

Despite posting a significantly lower six monthly performance compared to the corresponding period last year – a drop in net income of more than 40% to $690 million – John Deere’s construction and forestry division held firm to support the business.

The poorer numbers were essentially the result of a consistently weak agriculture division. The construction and forestry division however saved the company from a horror story by posting a 7% improvement on the corresponding period for an operating profit of $335 million.

Across the ditch in Finland, listed cutto-length specialist Ponsse reported a 13% improvement on its six months to June 30, netting sales of €206.6 million. The operating result was €22 million for earnings of €0.61 per share.

“The forest machine market situation was good worldwide during the past quarter,” was the overwhelmingly positive statement from Ponnse Chief Executive Juho Nummela.

“Demand for Ponsse forest machines continued to be good, and the order books were still strong.”

Those order books were 37% fatter than the corresponding period with some €170.5 million in equipment sales pending delivery.

Of more interest were both companies’ outlooks for the remainder of the year.

John Deere expects sales of construction and forestry equipment to increase by 2% despite a 3% negative impact of exchange rates. Ponsse, focused purely on forestry equipment, was more positive, forecasting an increase in full year profits and an increase in the factory capacity to cope with the increasing orders.

It would be nice to correlate these numbers with those from the major sawmill

suppliers in the US and Europe but of course those companies tend to be privately held and so their financials are not readily available.

What we can, and like to do, is speculate.

It must be said that the sawmill suppliers and the sawyers themselves that we speak to are more bullish than at any other time since this magazine was launched (some eight years). This is despite the existing and persistent pressure on raw material prices.

This observation should be qualified with the caveat that, apart from a more broad stroke approach when we’re making our way round the major lumber processing shows, those that get in touch with us willingly usually have something positive to talk about.

At the risk of repetition, we will however point out that many of the marginal operations have been lost during a prolonged period of attrition following the crisis leaving the more robust companies that should presumably have picked up market share in an improving environment.

The world economy is far from stable and is working tirelessly to trend upward without much success, yet we are seeing our industries posting strong results and returning themselves to positions held before the economic crisis.

From our point of view, this speaks to the fact that we operate in an industry of essentials – forestry supplies building materials, pulp for paper and is increasingly responsible for a larger portion of the world’s energy requirements.

We remain confident that in any future world realistically envisaged, in which the world consumes raw materials, forestry remains at its centre. And in all but the bleakest of backgrounds, the financials of our companies will reflect this.

GPC diversifies trade to become second largest log exporter

Gladstone Ports Corporation (GPC) has recently welcomed new trade for its Auckland Point Terminal, with the export of logs and woodchip commencing July 2015.

Auckland Point Terminal will process one shipment per month, making it the second largest log export operation behind the Port of Portland in Victoria, which processes one and a half shipments each month.

The new log and woodchip export trade is the result of a partnership between GPC and HQ Plantations, the largest plantation company in Queensland, and is a collaborative effort to salvage timber plantations that were impacted in the Category 5 Tropical Cyclone Marcia earlier this year.

Thousands of hectares of trees were left wind-thrown and damaged, and needed to be salvaged as soon as possible. GPC has been working closely with HQ Plantations to finalise a contract to

commence export of the damaged trees and woodchip from Auckland Point.

The export of logs has recently commenced, with the first shipment of 38,000 tonnes of logs to China last week. It is envisaged that woodchip exports will commence in September.

The woodchip operations include chipping, stockpiling and export, and will be coordinated by HQ Plantations. HQ Plantations operates in accordance with world class practices, and has been independently certified under the Forest Stewardship Council management standard.

The operations include the transportation of timber from the plantation areas in Byfield (north of Yeppoon), to HQ Plantation’s wood chipping facility in Yarwun. The woodchip is then transferred from the chipping facility to Auckland Point Terminal via the Port Access Road, with all truck loads covered to minimise dust.

Once transported to Auckland Point Terminal, the woodchip is stockpiled and stored in preparation for export. The stockpiling activities include the transportation of woodchip to

the stockpile by truck, and the movement of the woodchip by dozer. It is envisaged that a rubber wheeled dozer will be utilised for stockpile management in the coming months.

Chief Executive Officer, Craig Doyle said GPC welcomed the opportunity and is pleased to expand its trade operations.

“We have always looked at ways in which we can diversify our product and customer base across our three ports and this is a great opportunity to expand our

exports through our Auckland Point Terminal.

“We feel that the future of GPC is strong, with trade projected to grow to nearly 145 million tonnes handled within the next five years and the Port of Gladstone is on track to be Australia’s largest multi-cargo port by the end of the decade.

“We believe we can also significantly increase trade through Bundaberg and Rockhampton ports over the next few years,” Mr Doyle said.

“Running a Tier 4 final engine requires the use of Selective Catalyst Reduction (SCR) with DEF injection in the exhaust system,” explains Lodovico Sinchetto, Tigercat diesel engine systems engineer. “The SCR needs a minimum average operating temperature. Running a 4,5 litre four-cylinder engine will result in a higher duty cycle ensuring that the exhaust gas temperature is always optimal for the SCR, while delivering the same or better productivity.

An exhaust flap positioned just after the turbocharger provides active control of the exhaust temperatures even at low idle, allowing a total continuous idle time up to nine hours.”

Go Gas with Bandit: Gas-Powered chippers offer diesel power with lower costs

Tree service companies love the power of diesel equipment. So does Bandit, that is why they offer a range of diesel options for just about every hand-fed chipper they make. For companies working with high-production chippers in the 9” to 15” category, there’s another engine option—and it has the potential to save a company thousands of dollars.

“I was a little nervous going to a gas chipper because I didn’t know if the power would be there, but that engine really gets it done,” said Jeremiah Bailey, owner of Bailey Tree Company LLC in Sacramento, California.

Jeremiah bought a Model 990XP approximately one year ago, running the 3.0-liter gas engine. With approximately 30 employees and a large fleet of equipment, Bailey Tree covers all of Sacramento and the surrounding areas, and their machines are working hard every day of the week. “This four cylinder does what it needs to do,” said Bailey. “It’s very responsive; the other day we were running a lot of bigger wood

I don’t notice any difference between this machine and my diesels, except that the recovery rate for the gas chipper is much quicker. I didn’t really notice that before with the diesels, but when the RPMs drop on the gas chipper, they just jump right back up. It’s a real quick recovery rate.”

Tier 4 emission regulations are making things more costly for crews around the country, but for Jeremiah and other companies in California the situation is even more complicated with requirements from the California Air Resources Board. After

running his 89hp gas chipper for a year, he’s very happy to have a cost-effective alternative that can still perform well while helping him deal with the rising costs associated with diesel power.

“The air quality board in California makes things tough, so anything that helps me deal with that is good,” said Bailey.

“The engine on my Model 990XP has a good warranty, and even if something does happen, it’s far less expensive than diesel to repair or even replace if necessary. I have another gas-powered 990XP ordered that should be to me any day. These are great machines.”

that eliminates the risk of the transmission overheating if work is interrupted.

Also, the standard version of Maxisoil 350 is, for the first time, fitted with the liquid injection system with relative nozzles to mix the soil with a stabilising agent.

Major investment in new Tigercat production facility

On Thursday, July 23rd Tigercat opened the doors of its $12 million production facility to the public to proudly show off the new state-of-theart manufacturing facility.

Several hundreds of people including Tigercat employees and their families toured the 11 800 m2 (127,00 ft2) building in Paris, Ontario, Canada, located approximately 100 kilometres southwest of Toronto. “Tigercat is a growing global company and this investment to expand our production capabilities is a great testament to the commitment we have to our customers and to serving them better,” states President, Tony Iarocci, who was Tigercat’s first employee when the company started in 1992.

Tigercat now has nine southern Ontario locations, a large parts distribution and training centre in Georgia, a sales and distribution facility in Sweden and a dealer network that spans the globe, covering the forestry regions of North America, South America, Australasia, Africa, Europe and Russia. The new plant will house production of swing machines and cutto-length attachments including the 200 series loaders and the 800 series track feller bunchers, harvesters and loggers.

The building features light sensor skylights and bay door windows along with motion detector lights to save energy. The building’s roof is a white rubber membrane that reflects UV

rays and helps reduce heating and cooling costs.

There are six overhead cranes in each bay with room for more if needed. Specialized concrete was used for the floors to support the machines that will be produced in the plant.

“We export seventy five percent of what we produce, says Tigercat President Tony Iarocci, “Tigercat has produced over 16,000 Tigercat machines and in a time of economic turmoil the company has managed to gain market share.

The only thing holding the company back was its inability to produce more machines. The demand was there last year and we could have produced more, and now we can moving forward,” Iarocci explains

Pellets fuelling Liverpool port expansion The £100m pound expansion of the port of Liverpool is the result of infrastructure demands caused by pellet imports for Drax.

According to the Financial Times, the expansion involves the construction of a new terminal to handle shipments of pellets for Drax.

The pellets are being imported from Canadian and American pellet manufacturers. The new terminal will include a rail loading facility and storage capacity for up to 100,000 tonnes of pellets. Officials say that the new terminal will create close to 50 permanent jobs. The new terminal is expected to be completed by July of 2016.

VicForests may start exporting to China In Australia the state of Victoria’s low grade native timber could soon be packed into shipping containers bound for China and other cut-price countries for processing under a plan to help ailing state timber company VicForests.

VicForests has been left without a market for hundreds of thousands of tonnes of so-called “residual” timber following the loss of a key contract with Japaneseowned wood-chip company South East Fibre Exports (SEFE). In response, a rule requiring local processing before export has now been relaxed in a bid to open up new markets for the struggling state-owned wood business.

A confidential November 2013 Department of Treasury and Finance (DTF) briefing seen by The Age confirms the industry has for months been lobbying to relax the requirement for domestic processing of timber.

“VicForests indicates the Victorian Association of Forest Industries (VAFI) now supports relaxing certain aspects of the export restrictions,” the briefing to former treasurer Michael O’Brien, said. “Such a change should lead to improved outcomes for both VicForests and industry. DTF supports the reconsideration of the timber export policy.”

It follows the expiry of a clause that has for the past decade effectively allowed VicForests to legally operate against Commonwealth competition laws by favouring domestic over international wood processing.

It is unclear whether the Andrews government will reinstate the clause. In a written response to Parliament, Agriculture Minister Jaala Pulford last month said the situation was “under active consideration” by her department following the “sunset” of the clause on July 1. Her spokeswoman said the clause had been introduced in 2004 to help the industry transition to a fully competitive market system.

Ms Pulford later confirmed the requirement around domestic processing had been approved in 2014.

“I have asked my department to prepare advice on the appropriate mechanisms to formally require VicForests to explore all options for domestic processing before any straight export contracts are considered,” Ms Pulford said.

The industry is viewing the expiry of the competition clause as an opportunity for new international markets. “This is about finding a market for residual timber that can’t be processed domestically,” VicForests spokesman David Walsh said.

Under the plan, higher grade saw-logs would continue to be processed locally, but lower grade timber would be shipped to countries such as China with the technology to use it to produce

veneers and other products.

VicForests was under pressure even before the loss of the SEFE contract taking waste timber from VicForests’ East Gippsland logging operations, with international markets increasingly demanding higher quality plantation timber.

A December 2013 report by the Victorian auditor-general found in 2012-13 at least 250,000 cubic metres of residual wood, representing 16 per cent of the total harvest, was left on the forest floor and burnt because no one wanted to buy it.

VicForests has also considered selling its residual timber as firewood, using it for power generation, or even producing chip-board.

MyEnvironment director Sarah Rees said the move represented a “race to the bottom”. “Australia cannot legitimately compete with the price of wood coming out of

Indonesia and Vietnam, so this is another desperate, loss-making venture to keep logging native forests, only now VicForests are compromising Australian jobs to keep it going.”

The prospect of relaxing export restrictions on Victorian timber has also concerned the union.

Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union national secretary Michael O’Connor warned exporting unprocessed wood represented a “low road” in terms of producing an economic and social return from the state’s forest resources.

“Clearly our view is if you want a successful forest industry you need more high value processing in this country,” Mr O’Connor said.

VAFI chief executive Tim Johnston said the industry supported local processing although at times this was not possible.

The S172 - Reliable harvester head for demanding felling operations Komatsu Forest has launched the S172 harvester head, the largest two-wheel fed head in the S-series so far from the company.

The harvester head has been built for demanding felling operations and has proved very reliable and efficient in trials.

The Komatsu S172 is designed for their largest harvester, the Komatsu 951, and is the heaviest head that can be delivered together with a 10-metre crane. The head weight starts at 1675 kg. The Komatsu S172 is an extremely effective and reliable head, designed for harvesting large diameter trees. It offers effective delimbing with three hydraulically controlled delimbing knives and a fourth, moving vertical knife.

The head features Flex Friction Control, which means that the stem’s position in the feed path is regulated by a sensor in the vertical knife. The result is low friction without sacrificing delimbing quality.

The feed system is based on two powerful feed rollers that can handle truly large trees. The head provides high feed force thanks to the special motor design. When great force is required to feed a tree the motors slow down in order to deliver more power. Likewise, if less force is required to feed a tree the motors speed up – everything to maximise productivity.

The Komatsu S172 is highly reliable, the result of many different factors spanning

everything from the sturdy design with a high-strength steel frame to specially protected head components. In order to minimise downtime, the head is fitted with protected hose routing. Another advantage is that the head is equipped with ORFS couplings to minimise hydraulic oil leakage.

New milestone reached in biomass supply chain

A three year partnership between Lloyds Register Rail, UK manufacturer WH Davis and Drax has reached a significant milestone as Drax takes delivery of its 200th specially designed biomass rail freight wagon.

The partnership, which has pushed the boundaries of rail engineering and lead to the design and manufacturing of the largest ever rail freight wagons in the UK, has played a major role in ongoing developments in Drax’s supply chain as part of its conversion to burning sustainable biomass in

place of coal – a process which has seen Drax transform from the UK’s largest emitter of CO2 to Europe’s largest decarbonisation project.

Since entering operations in 2013, the wagons, designed

by Lloyd’s Register Rail and manufactured by WH Davis, have collectively travelled over 12 million miles between the Ports of Tyne, Hull and Immingham and Drax.

Over the course of these journeys they have transported around 4.5 million tonnes of sustainable biomass – enough to power 2.5 million homes with low carbon, affordable and reliable renewable electricity. The wagons are 30 per cent larger than any other rail freight wagon currently used in the UK, and are able to carry a biomass load weighing 71.6 tonnes.

Rayonier completes two timberland acquisitions in the U.S. South and Pacific Northwest for $60 million Rayonier Inc. (NYSE:RYN) recently announced the company has acquired approximately 18,000 acres of high-quality timberlands in southwest Louisiana and northwest Oregon in two separate transactions from BTG Pactual Timberland Investment Group. Both properties are located near existing Rayonier landholdings: The Louisiana property – known as the King parcel – consists of approximately 12,200 acres of high quality, well managed southern pine timberland located in strong timber markets. The property was purchased for $25.5 million. It contains merchantable inventory of approximately 560,000 tons, is comprised of approximately 86% plantable lands, and is expected to improve the company’s sustainable yield by approximately 45,000 tons per year. This acquisition expands Rayonier’s ownership in Louisiana

to approximately 150,000 acres.

The Oregon property – known as the Scappoose parcel – consists of approximately 5,600 acres of highly productive, well-stocked and highly-operable timberland tributary to strong domestic and export markets in the northwest corner of the state, near current company holdings in southwest Washington. The property was purchased for $34 million. It complements the age-class profile of the company’s Pacific Northwest timber holdings, contains merchantable inventory of approximately 102,000 tons (12.7 MMBF) of which an estimated 95% is high-value Douglas-fir, is comprised of approximately 88% operable lands, and is expected to improve the company’s sustainable yield by approximately 35,000 tons (4.4 MMBF) per year. This acquisition expands Rayonier’s

footprint into the state of Oregon and grows Rayonier’s total Pacific Northwest ownership to approximately 374,000 acres.

The company also acquired approximately 4,600 acres located in Florida and Georgia in the second quarter of 2015 through a series of small transactions with non-industrial private landowners.

Year-to-date, Rayonier has acquired 35,000 acres of high quality timberland in the U.S. South and Pacific Northwest for a total of approximately $88 million.

Paraná State, Brazil: Sawnwood exports grew 16.7% in 1H 2015 Recovery in the US housing market has benefited the timber sector in Paraná State, Brazil. Sawnwood exports grew 16.7% to $64.9 million in the first half of 2015 compared to the same period last year. Plywood exports from mills in the state also increased, growing

by almost 19% to $185.3 million in the same period, ITTO reported.

MDF and plywood are primarily used in the construction and furniture industries in America. As a result of the 2008 financial crisis demand in the US for woodbased panels fell sharply. Prior to 2008

around 50% of exports from Paraná were destined for the US but this fell to 15% during the crisis and while there has been some improvement. Currently the US accounts for just 22% of wood product exports from Paraná State.

Setra to upgrade the Malå sawmill Setra will upgrade the trimmer at Malå sawmill during the autumn.

The investment includes totally new machinery, a new cutting system and the installation of automated sorting. The saw line will also be equipped with a new control system. “This investment will enable us to raise our productivity at the same time as we adjust to future requirements on the product we work with,” says Rickard Westerberg, Manager of Setra Malå.

“We will rebuild large parts of the trimmer with new machines and control systems at the same

time as we convert to automated sorting. The equipment we have today dates from the mid-1990s and has worked well but this investment means we will be able to make significant improvements,” says Westerberg.

The upgrading of the trimmer is being carried out in cooperation with Rema Sawco who will deliver an RS-BoardScannerQ and CGV (C. Gunnarssons Verkstads AB) who will supply the machinery and control system. The investment is scheduled to be put into operation during the fourth quarter of 2015.

“Here at Malå sawmill we

are very pleased to have this opportunity. Once we have completed this investment we will be able to deliver an even better product for many years to come,” says Westerberg.

The major gains with automated timber sorting is that it provides a more consistent grade sorting, fewer offcuts and increased flexibility to meet customer requirements as well as reduced production costs.

Setra Färila invests in new AriVislanda sawmill equipment Setra is to invest in technology at the Färila sawmill in order to further strengthen the sawmills competitiveness.

In October 2015 the sawmill machine manufacturer AriVislanda will supply new sawmill equipment with a control system from RemaSawco to Setra’s sawmill in Färila. The machinery will go into operation in stages during the autumn and the sawmill is

expected to return to its present production level by the end of November.

“We chose AriVislanda and RemaSawco as suppliers because their concept meets the function and quality we want in a costeffective manner,” says Mattias Forslund, Manager of Setra Färila.

“The investment will lead to a higher sawing yield through thinner cuts and more accurate

measurement of produced goods.

This is entirely in line with our longterm goal to make the best use of our high-quality raw material from this region,” says Forslund.

Norske Skog to invest NOK 150 million in new biogas facility at its Saugbrugs mill in Norway Norske Skog Saugbrugs will invest NOK 150 million in construction of a biogas facility in connection to its effluent plant. The biogas facility will contribute to gross operating earnings in 2016 and be at full run-rate contribution in 2017. - We are planning to commercialize biowaste from raw material into gas at our mills. Despite challenging markets, we believe that our mill sites are sustainable, and will strengthen their competitiveness by constructing biogas facilities.

Our new growth area will be a new main business leg named Nature’s Flame, says Sven Ombudstvedt, President and CEO of Norske Skog and chairman of the board of Norske Skog Saugbrugs.

Enova has granted NOK 52 million in support to the project, while Sparebank 1 Gruppen and Halden Municipality’s pension fund has provided about NOK 100 million in debt financing. Norske Skog plans to build biogas facilities at its mills, utilizing biowaste from the paper production process to

renewable energy. Norske Skog is currently considering replicating the project at its other mills. An onsite biogas facility brings twofold economic benefits; a new biogas revenue stream and reduced paper production costs.

Biogas is further a renewable alternative to fossil fuels, which forms part of the carbon solution.

Moreover, biogas has large potentials in improving urban air quality, says Ombudstvedt.

AGA will be the main purchaser of biogas from Saugbrugs. AGA has been supplying biogas to heavy vehicles since 2008. AGA supplies 550 buses and trucks with biogas from filling stations every day. The agreement with Norske Skog Saugbrugs represents a positive addition for renewable fuels in the county of Østfold, Norway.

The volume of biogas covered by the agreement will be able to supply biogas to a fleet of 70 heavy vehicles and a reduction in CO2 emissions of about 6,500 tons annually, says John Melby, Manager

Therefore, we find it great that Norske Skog Saugbrugs will utilize sewage sludge from paper production to produce biogas.

Buses and refuse trucks in Østfold will now be able to use climate-friendly biogas made from waste products from Norske Skog. We wish to see more of this type of energy utilization.

Hopefully, several other mills in the Norske Skog group will adopt similar solutions, says marketing director Audhild Kvam in Enova.

Norske Skog Saugbrugs has 500 employees. The mill has an annual production capacity of 500 000 tonnes of magazine paper.

LEUCO gains recognition for 70° shear angle The Schweighofer Prize, the innovation prize for the European forest management and timber industry, was awarded on May 7 this year. The Austrian timber industrialist and innovator Gerald Schweighofer presented prizes in front of numerous guests from the political and economic world.

Projects, products, technologies and people from Austria, Germany, Sweden, Italy and Switzerland were recognised.

Dr Martin Dressler of LEUCO accepted one of the coveted innovation prizes for the p-System.

This universal tool system, with extreme shear angles of 70°, enormously extends edge life and additionally provides exceptional cutting quality, said to Dr Brandstätter of the jury in his laudatory speech.

The bandwidth of options for using these tools ranges from the smallest shank-type cutter to the giant p-System corner cutter for sawmill use.

The patented LEUCO p-System tools are successfully used both in stationary and through-feed processing as well as in high performance saw lines. For Dressler, the p-System is the most economically efficient tool there is. There are now even machines which have been operating with a p-System for several years without resharpening. The Schweighofer innovation prize is already the second recognition for the p-System. Chilean sawmill upgrades its edging and sawing lines The Mestre sawmill situated right outside Constitución has recently ordered a new Catech 400 TS-4 edger optimizer from Söderhamn Eriksson. Even before taking this new line into operation, Mestre has decided to also upgrade its saw line with a 3D-scanner and optimization as well new log and cant infeeders. These investments

are intended to increase sawing yield, which also means that the sawmill will need less manpower while increasing its capacity.

Currently Mestre produces some 60,000 cu.m. lumber a year.

Finnish pulp production increased almost 3% in 1H 2015

Finnish pulp and packaging paperboard production grew in the first half of the year.

The volume of printing and writing paper production remained almost unchanged from the previous year’s level, but softwood sawn timber production contracted. Upcoming industrial policy decisions will have a significant impact on the competitiveness of Finland’s forest-based sector.

The forest-based sector plays a significant role in the generation of export revenues for Finland. Forest industry products accounted for 21.7% of national exports in January-May. Some 5.3 million tonnes of paper and paperboard was produced in Finland in January-June, just under 1% more than in the corresponding period of 2014.

About 3 million tonnes of printing and writing paper was produced in Finland during the first half of the year. Output was almost unchanged from the corresponding period of 2014.

Production of paperboard for packaging applications continued to grow steadily. Some 1.6 million tonnes of paperboard was produced in January-June, over 5% more than one year earlier.

Pulp production increased in the first half of the year. Finnish pulp production totalled 3.6 million tonnes in January-June, almost 3% more than in the corresponding period of 2014.

Softwood sawn timber production in JanuaryJune totalled 5.5 million cubic metres. First-half production was down 4% compared to the previous year.

“A comprehensive societal agreement is needed alongside very moderate pay rises in the next few years if we want Finnish competitiveness to recover. This would enable us to narrow the gap that has developed between Finland and our key competitor countries.

Promoting favourable operating prerequisites for the forest-based sector, the most important component of the bioeconomy, makes it possible to realise the expectations that have been placed on the bioeconomy as a driving force for overall economic activity,” says Timo Jaatinen, Director General of the Finnish Forest Industries Federation.

Long-term and consistent industrial policies are a prerequisite for the realisation of the forest-based sector’s numerous investment projects.

Canfor reports positive results for second quarter of 2015 Canfor Corporation (TSX: CFP) reported on July 21 net income attributable to shareholders (“shareholder net income”) of $11.1 million, or $0.08 per share, for the second quarter of 2015, compared to $29.3 million, or $0.22 per share, for the first quarter of 2015 and $54.3 million, or $0.39 per share, for the second quarter of 2014.

For the six months ended June 30, 2015, the Company’s shareholder net income was $40.4 million, or $0.30 per share, compared to shareholder net income of $99.8 million, or $0.72 per share, reported for the first half of 2014.

The Company reported operating income

of $17.6 million for the second quarter of 2015, down $66.1 million compared to operating income of $83.7 million for the first quarter of 2015, with the decline reflecting lower operating earnings in both the lumber and pulp and paper segments.

Lumber segment results were impacted by a decline in benchmark lumber prices, an average export tax of 7% on Canadian lumber shipments to the US and a slightly stronger Canadian dollar. These factors outweighed an increase in lumber shipments in the current quarter and the continued positive impact from the Company’s expanded presence in the US South, including

the recent acquisition of Southern Lumber Inc. (“Southern Lumber”) on April 1, 2015.

Pulp and paper segment results were also lower than the previous quarter, principally due to scheduled maintenance outages in the current quarter and lower unit sales realizations in all regions. The decline in Western Spruce/ Pine/Fir (“SPF”) lumber prices seen in the first quarter of the year continued into the second quarter with the average benchmark Western SPF 2x4 #2&Btr price decreasing by US$89 per Mfbm, or 26%, from the beginning of the year through the end of May. In June, Western SPF prices picked up as North American demand improved and various production curtailments in the industry took effect. Southern Yellow Pine (“SYP”) East lumber prices have also declined since the beginning of the year but at a more gradual pace than the Western SPF benchmark.

US housing starts in the current quarter averaged 1,144,000 units SAAR (seasonally adjusted annual rate), up 17% from the previous quarter, which in part reflected an increase in construction activity from the first quarter when home building levels were hampered by challenging weather.

In Canada, housing starts averaged 193,000 units SAAR in the current quarter, up 9% from the previous quarter. Lumber offshore markets were steady in the current quarter with prices holding up relatively well compared to North America. Lower lumber unit sales realizations in the current quarter compared to the first quarter of 2015 reflected weaker North American benchmark prices for both Western SPF and SYP dimension products, and, to a lesser extent, a 1% stronger Canadian dollar. Lumber price declines were most pronounced for narrow widths, as evidenced by the quarter-over-quarter decreases of US$38 per Mfbm, or 12%, and US$30 per Mfbm, or 7%, for the Western SPF IFI_2015-09_USNR-SE-Merger_half-pg.indd 1

Overall wide dimension and most lower grade lumber products saw more modest price declines compared to the previous quarter.

Unit sales realizations in the US South in the News Release 2 current quarter benefited from a higher-value sales mix, resulting from the Company’s recent acquisitions.

Canfor’s offshore lumber sales realizations held up relatively well compared to North American sales realizations, in part reflecting a more diverse product offering to offshore markets as well as the nature of pricing, much of which is negotiated monthly or quarterly in advance. Lumber shipments at just under 1.4 billion board feet were up 17% from the previous quarter reflecting strong shipments offshore in the current quarter as well as incremental SYP volume from the Company’s recent acquisitions.

Lumber production at almost 1.3 billion board feet was up 5% from the previous quarter due primarily to the Company’s recent growth in the US South. Overall lumber unit manufacturing costs decreased slightly compared to the previous quarter, reflecting productivity gains and stable log costs. Global softwood pulp markets remained relatively balanced through the second quarter of 2015, supported by solid global softwood pulp demand and the industry’s seasonal spring maintenance period.

The average Northern Bleached Softwood Kraft (“NBSK”) pulp list price to North America, as published by RISI, was stable through the quarter, remaining unchanged from March 2015 at US$980 per tonne, and down US$15 per tonne, or 2%, compared to the average in the previous quarter. Overall, NBSK pulp unit sales realizations were down compared to the previous quarter, reflecting lower pricing in all regions, and, to a lesser extent, the impact of the slightly stronger Canadian dollar and increased shipments to lower-margin regions. Bleached Chemi-Thermo Mechanical Pulp (“BCTMP”) markets were challenging in the second quarter, with the Company seeing a modest decline in unit

sales realizations compared to the first quarter of 2015.

Pulp shipments were slightly higher than the previous quarter reflecting a marginal increase in NBSK pulp shipments, principally to China, in part due to the traditional Chinese Lunar New Year holiday impacting shipments in the first quarter. Pulp production levels were down 4% reflecting scheduled maintenance outages at the Company’s Intercontinental and Prince George Pulp Mills, which reduced market pulp production by approximately 11,000 tonnes. In the current quarter, there was also a scheduled maintenance outage at the Taylor Pulp Mill, which reduced market pulp production by approximately 3,000 tonnes.

Pulp unit manufacturing costs in the second quarter of 2015 were up compared to the first quarter of 2015, largely reflecting these maintenance outages, offset somewhat by seasonally lower energy prices and usage.

Commenting on the Company’s second quarter results, Canfor’s President and Chief Executive Officer, Don Kayne, said, “Despite challenging market-related conditions and continued log cost pressures for our Western SPF operations, we saw improvements in our overall operational performance and positive impacts from our expansion in the US South.” Kayne also noted that the Company shipped record lumber volumes to China in the quarter.

Kayne added, ”We continue to be pleased with the solid growth in our offshore business, particularly in higher-value grades.” The North American lumber market is forecast to continue to improve at a modest pace through the third quarter of 2015, with further improvements projected through the fall.

Offshore markets are forecast to be relatively stable in the third quarter of 2015. With reported global softwood pulp inventories at the high end of the balanced range heading into the seasonally slower summer period, there is some risk of downward pressure on global softwood pulp prices in the third quarter of 2015. Both the lumber and pulp and paper segments are forecast to benefit from a weakening of the Canadian dollar in the third quarter of 2015.

$3 billion of foreign investment has secured forestry jobs The Australian Forest Products Association (AFPA) has joined the voices cautioning the Australian Government to not jeopardise the flow of overseas capital into vital regional agribusiness through changes to the foreign investment review framework.

With more than $3 billion of investment over the past five years, which has secured jobs and provided opportunities for growth, the forestry and forest products sector is a case study of the positive role foreign capital can play in rural Australia.

The United States, Canada, New Zealand, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, Norway and Sweden have all made significant capital investments across the entire forestry and forest products value

chain. Softwood and hardwood plantations, forest management, sawmills and processing operations, pulp and paper, and woodchip exporters have all welcomed overseas capital.

Plantations have seen the highest growth rate in capital investment. Ten years ago overseas owners held 12% of national plantation assets.

They now support 60%. The sales of plantations previously established by state governments to the private sector, along with a number of sales of privately owned plantations following the Global Financial Crisis, benefited greatly from the strong overseas interest, as the pool of investment funds in Australia was shown to be too small.

AFPA Chief Executive Officer Mr Ross Hampton said, “Overseas buyers have been welcome and added enormously to our ability to upscale our industry and take advantage of strong international demand for forest fibre products.

New owners have introduced new management strategies, new technology and led to improved efficiency of operations.”

“Although these operations have overseas owners, they are Australian registered companies, managed and run by Australians.

They support more than 4,200 direct jobs in plantation management, harvesting and haulage, with a further 40,000 flow-on jobs at sawmills, woodchip export facilities, and timber product manufacturers. They also

happen overnight – the ramp-up phase takes at least six months.

The Montes del Plata mill in Uruguay has now been running for a year, and daily operating rates are on target level.

The mill is producing around 3700 t/d of pulp and on many days has reached a production rate of well above 4000 t/d. Importantly, the feedback from customers on service level for technical support, sales process coordination and reliability of the supply chain is very encouraging, reports Stora Enso.

Montes del Plata employees have been working continuously in enhancing the product quality of the pulp to meet customer needs. The strength properties are improving all the time. It is normal

that reaching quality stability takes some time when the mill is new.

Despite this, the entire production of the mill is sold, which was a huge effort and success for the sales team.

Montes del Plata is a joint operation between Stora Enso and the Chilean company Arauco. It was inaugurated in autumn 2014, and is an important growth generator for Stora Enso.

The mill has also strongly contributed to Uruguay’s GDP growth: last year, the GDP of Uruguay increased by 4%, which was due to a large part to Montes del Plata. On top of that, Montes del Plata has developed the region economically by creating direct and indirect employment.

Interim report from Setra: Internal efficiency improvements contribute to strong cash flow Wood products company Setra reported an operating profit of SEK 88 million (165) for the six-month period January-June 2015. Net sales totalled SEK 2,270 million (2,258).

“Demand for wood products has been relatively stable during the first six months of the year but increased production has led to excess supplies and a price fall in local currencies in our main markets. The decline in prices was

compensated to some extent by the weaker Swedish krona. The negative trends in the market strengthened slightly towards the end of the period,” says Hannele Arvonen, President and CEO of Setra.

Cash flow from operating activities in the first half of 2015 amounted to SEK 96 million (7) which combined with positive earnings means that Setra’s financial position has strengthened. This breakthrough in the field of scanning and optimisation has created a new trend for grading wood in planer mills and has substantially increased their corresponding profitability.

“It is now feasible to have a consistent

performance 24 hours a day thanks to grading solutions that take into consideration your specific grade criteria as well as how you prioritise your products,” Comact said.

Accuracy equals geometry plus vision plus triple tracheid detection The GradExpert is a combination of high-tech electronic components made to detect the geometry and the appearance of the piece of wood. Then, the system associates this piece with a grade according to these features and the given grade definition.

High-resolution cameras provide a clear, accurate image of wood fibre. This accuracy is enhanced by the reading provided by the triple tracheid detection system, which measures fibre angle to thus identify defects, such as knots, decay, wood

grain deviation, and pith.

This information is paired with the geometric data gathered by the laser heads and light curtain, which incidentally is a technological development designed by the Comact team of engineers. The high accuracy of the data acquired by the system’s electronic components has been made possible thanks to the fact that the Comact system offers transverse configuration. Doing so provides greater board stability through the scanner, regardless of speed (up to 260 logs/minute).

“Besides providing a more accurate measurement of the board curves, transverse configuration ensures that 100% of boards will have a solution comparable to that of linear systems,” the manufacturer stated.

Technology with a personal touch GradExpert technology can easily be adapted to the specific needs of Comact clients.

“In fact, when Comact sells a grading system for conspicuous wood, it modifies the layout of electronic components in order to fetch higher image resolution,” the company said. “This kind of system is also equipped with offset chains to allow viewing 100% of the piece.”

software identifies some defects, such as decay, cracks, and paint marks, as well as analysing growth rings in order to pinpoint pith position. The pith position can be located either inside or outside the piece and adjust knot calculations accordingly.

New development: wormeaten pitch detection Worm-eaten pitch detection is among Comact’s new features for 2015. This type of defect is found mostly in the Southern US where worms attack wood fibre.

In order to counter the injuries caused by these parasites, the tree secretes resin and thus creates the worm-eaten pitch. This defect comes in various forms and is forbidden in some grades while being limited in others.

An algorithm has been developed in order to properly detect this defect and optimise it according to the grades defined in the user’s interface.

The expertise of Comact personnel and the proven technology of the GradExpert allows the company to meet challenges that seemed impossible barely a few years ago.

In 2014, Comact installed a GradExpert at J.D. Irving in Ashland, Maine. The project’s particularity is that the equipment had to grade both raw wood and planed wood simultaneously. In the compact mill layout, sawing and planing share the same trimmer line.

Owing to great laser head accuracy, Comact programmers managed to develop an algorithm to optimise raw wood and planed wood differently. Allowed grades and detection parameters differ according to the type of finish found on a piece.

“We thus obtained a highperforming, versatile system,” Comact said.

he global financial crisis wreaked havoc on many, and distinguished the resilient.

One company standing tall today is Hyne Timber, operating from 11 sites across Australia’s Eastern Seaboard. Like many it had to curtail its capital investment plans, but now it is back to keeping up with the evolution of advancements being offered by forward-thinking, world-class vendors like USNR. Coming out of the crisis, the company immediately looked to grade scanning technology for its edger lines to extract the greatest value from its green mill process. And as this recent major investment project was nearing completion, Jon Kleinschmidt, CEO of Hyne Timber, emphasized the importance of remaining competitive in a company newsletter. “Sawmill technology developments have advanced significantly. The BioLuma scanner upgrade to the green mill (at Tumbarumba) will enable visibility of knots in each board to assess for knot size, knot location and dimensional properties so as to make a better edging decision. This will maximize the value we extract from each board.”

Hyne Timber is a progressive, privately-owned company, and

one of the largest manufacturers of dimensional timber products in Australia. Its operations are situated in the eastern regions of Australia, and comprise two modern sawmills, a laminated beam plant, as well as several sales and distribution centers.

At Tumbarumba the company operates a log yard, sawmill (supplied by USNR), dry kilns, planer mill, treatment plant and storage/distribution facilities.

The mill focuses its efforts on producing high quality structural timber for construction, and its lower grade material is exported to Asian markets or used domestically in pallet plants.

Wise investment As vision technology matured, Hyne Timber realized that gains could be achieved utilizing this new method for detecting defects in its green material. Chris SkeelsPiggins, Manufacturing Manager for the company, explains. “For Radiata pine, knots and stiffness define 80% of the downgrade reasons in structurally graded products. With our edgers cutting mostly sap (outer) wood, knots are our primary reason for downgrades. The BioVision system allows us to see these knots and make an informed decision on what

to do with them.”

He continued, “We already had USNR optimization throughout the mill, and a strong relationship for support. The decision was an easy one.” Support is a very important aspect of any supplier-customer relationship, as Skeels-Piggins well knows. “Being on the opposite side of the world, having someone on call 24/7 is essential to our business.”

Upping the ante The edgers process material from raw sizes of 2.4 to 6.0 M (8-20’) lengths, 75 mm to 600 mm (3-24”) widths, and 25 mm to 75 mm (13”) thicknesses. The edger lines operate at 32-36 ppm, and include USNR’s Maximizer positioning infeeds, two 5-saw edger machines – one with reman head, and shortcoupled tipple-finger outfeeds.

Optimization is MillExpert and, when first installed, scanning utilized Smart TriCam sensors for

geometric measurements.

In this recent project, the transverse scan frames were replaced with new USNR BioVision frames that each accommodates 22 BioLuma 2900LV sensors. For this application the two rows of sensors are arranged above and below the flow, for 2-sided scanning which is typical for an edger process.

The BioVision systems at Hyne Timber are predominantly required to grade for knots over 10mm in diameter, as well as wane. The systems offer additional features, defect recognition and classification attributes.

Improved grade yields Skeels-Piggins said he was very satisfied with both grade uplift, and the progression of the projects.

This piece shows the top solution using visual defect optimization compared with the bottom solution which uses laser profile data only. Having the optimizer switch the position of the 100mm product, the mill is able to obtain a higher grade board “We are very happy with the results. Grade yield improved by about 4% across all products.”

Skeels-Piggins was not surprised that the mill lost a small amount of solid fiber recovery. He commented that the optimization system features parameters that quantified the volume loss for them ahead of time. “Because of the knot sizes and configuration of the wood we are processing, we fully expected we would reduce the volume of fiber recovery. The simulations we

did told us that would happen, it did happen, and we got the subsequent grade uplift that we needed.”

In addition to improving grade uplift and value, BioVision in the sawmill allows for focused sorting and specialized handling, drying and treatment of certain grade products as defined by the mill and identified by the BioVision system.

included Steve Kerr, Mat Thomsen and James Davies as project managers for the two lines. Jack Galvin, site electrician, managed the electrical requirements of the new scanners, which included installing the new computers, pulling cables and minor PLC code changes. On the USNR side were Bob Arnold, sawmill grade scanning manager; Shawn Devantier, project manager; and Mark Mellow and Paul Kangas were on site to oversee installation of

the new scanners and start-up the system.

dense surface points and log picture for each individual scanned log and then passes that information to the RCS Scanner.

By overlaying dense profiles and pictures previously given by the first scanner, the RCS Scanner compares the actual complete final rotation from the first rotor and, if needed, adjusts or fine tune the rotation with the second rotor.

Log Sorters with DBA+ option (Dynamic Bin Assignment Plus) When the number of sawing patterns is higher than the number of bins, managers cannot affect a single pattern to every bin. A dynamic bin management has to be created by giving precedence to certain patterns with higher priorities while mixing others with lower priorities.

Priorities optimise the line speed and reduce the gap as much as possible.

The system functions as follows: since the log sorting scanner doesn’t know what kind of log is coming, the DBA will use statistics and probabilities to forecast the bin attribution from an amount of logs previously run into the scanner (log history) and will choose the most relevant pattern.

In other words, the DBA+ will use the information within the patterns distribution list (~1,000 logs) to decide on the most popular patterns and which ones will win their own bin.

ibre and value recovery are arguably the two hottest topics for lumber mills around the world. New advances in technology, and especially in lumber scanning, make those hot topics even hotter.

Moreover staying on top of those advances is crucial to maintaining competitiveness in today’s marketplace.

First and foremost, its footprint is impressively small – with its compact design, it fits behind the planer in just inches of space. Mills that incorporate a GradeScan make very few changes to their existing line; there’s no need to move lug chains or create a large space.

Secondly, lineal design uses just one set of sensors, so when it’s time to change or upgrade sensors, only one set is required, which minimises cost and downtime, and a lineal scanner can integrate with other sensors such as MSR, lineal moisture and CLT. Lineal scanning also has the added advantage of looking at fibre in the same direction as the fibre is running, which provides a greater level of accuracy.

Further, the GradeScan enclosure is pressurised and temperature-controlled, and the compact system won’t expand or contract as temperatures change, so the measurement stays accurate.

Lineal scanning also results in the most accurate warp detection available. Lucidyne’s warp detection system measures the board’s crook, twist and bow when it is in its natural, relaxed state.

In this lineal process, boards can get crossed or turned over before they reach the saws. Upper Columbia Mill smashes production records

Since opening its doors, the Upper Columbia Mill has consistently beaten its year-on-year production figures by prioritising state-ofthe-art technology and controlled raw material supply

I

n 2007 GreenWood Tree Farm Fund and Collins embarked on a joint venture to build Upper Columbia Mill, with a vision of constructing a mill that sources timber exclusively from GreenWood Tree Farm’s Pacific Albus plantation and uses state-ofthe-art technology to process it. To do this, they situated Upper Columbia Mill amid GreenWood Tree Farm’s 24,000-acre tree farm in Boardman, Oregon, US. The FSC-certified plantation, which surrounds Upper Columbia Mill, differentiates the operation from most sawmills and provides them with several unique advantages. Upper Columbia Mill does not buy trees on the open market, which allows them to remain competitive in a challenging economy.

Unlike the timber sold on the open market, Pacific Albus timber is consistent, uniform and sustainable. Due to the tree farm’s proximity, logs are harvested within three miles of the mill and do not have to be cut to highway length for transport. Stems arrive at Upper Columbia Mill within one-and-a-half days of harvest.

As the mill’s production fluctuates, the logging levels can shift accordingly. Combined, these factors have a substantial impact on Upper Columbia Mill’s bottom line.

When Upper Columbia Mill opened its doors in September 2008, they operated with a skeleton crew while they fine-tuned the equipment and operations. Now the mill employs approximately 85 full-time employees, and that number continues to grow.

Since opening, Upper Columbia Mill has consistently broken production records. During

its first year, Upper Columbia Mill produced more than 5 Mbdft of lumber. By 2012, it generated 48 Mbdft. It was vital to select equipment and optimisation systems that fit its particular needs, rather than deploying a solution with a one-size-fits-all approach.

Nelson Bros Engineering delivered. “With Nelson Bros, we asked for a system that met certain criteria,” Ezell said.

“They deployed the same hardware across four machine centers and made it work. It just fits. It’s the same JoeScan scan heads, same interface and same concept throughout all four machine centers. We only have to learn one system. The platform

The JoeScan scan heads capture detailed data on the geometry of the stem, and this data is analyzed to identify the key components and characteristics to optimise for the

Simplicity of JoeScan’s heads contributes to productivity Scanning is an integral component of the optimization, and Upper Columbia Mill uses 24 JoeScan scan heads in the four machine centers to optimise cutting decisions and maximize yield. Even before the mill was operational, Ezell was impressed with JoeScan scan heads because of the easy setup and calibration.

“To power up a JoeScan scan head, all you need is two plugs – Ethernet and the connector – and it’s up and running. It doesn’t require a special computer,”

The scanning data feeds directly into the optimizer program, which conveys information to the PLC (program logic controller) system that controls the six-saw merchandising line. Some scanning solutions use up to four scan heads to profile stems; JoeScan scan heads accomplish the profiling needed with just two.

In 2013, Upper Columbia Mill added a veneer plant. According to Ezell, the veneer plant adds “a whole new level of complexity to the system.” The system has to differentiate between veneer blocks and sawmill blocks, and then position the saws correctly to cut a straight log and optimize the

cut for maximum recovery.

JoeScan scan heads are an essential part of the system. The high-resolution, accurate scan data enables the optimisation program to identify the nodes, evaluate alternate cutting patterns and ultimately select the most valuable set of blocks to cut from a given stem.

After the primary breakdown, two JoeScan scan heads profile cants before they pass through the gang saw. A scan head positioned on each side of the cant determines the optimal cutting solution, and several decision processes rely on the data from the scan head.

Currently, the gang runs up to 500 bdft/minute. While the cants go through the gang saw, the flitches move to the edger. Two additional JoeScan scan heads profile the flitches from the side and create a profile of the entire length. The data from the scan head helps determine where to cut the flitch to make a board. The edger optimiser system runs 1,250 bdft/minute, so it’s imperative that the scan heads are fast and reliable.

During the last stage of the sawing process, the boards travel to the trimmer. Upper Columbia Mill’s trimmer uses a bank of 18 JoeScan scan heads that profile entire boards transversely. The scan heads profile the boards from three different angles – two rows of six scan heads profile the bottom of the board, and a row of six scan heads on the top provides information on the sides of the board and identifies wane.

According to Ezell, the scan heads identify “how much we can

The first laser line provides information on the direction of the fibre and the second laser line provides information on the dispersion of light in the fibre. By combining this data, they are able to identify knots with a very high level of accuracy and with virtually no false detection.

one computer room to another to monitor data and access reports.

Case study: early focus on value Chris Kalesnikoff, Operations Manager for Kalesnikoff Lumber of Thrums, British Columbia, Canada, was an early adaptor of the MyMill mobile machine control technology, with a system installed with the mill’s new bin sorter in 2013.

“The MyMill system suited us very well, as we understand and relate to mobile communications technology,” he said. “This is the way the world is moving.”

Kalesnikoff related that the mill had previously used a largely manual lumber sorting process. He recognised the value of going to an automated system and quickly saw the benefit of the MyMill technology.

“The MyMill system suited us very well as the mill employs a young generation of sawmillers, and we understand and relate to mobile communications technology like using iPads and iPods,” he said.

Kalesnikoff explained that the mill runs a tight operation with a single 12-person shift, and every member of its lean crew is versatile.

Kalesnikoff explained that installing the mobile system required much less time and expense than a traditional sorter control system. There is no need to purchase and install multiple consoles, and no need to route the associated cables and wiring.

“A big thing for us was the reduced cost,” he added.

“Our crew has all been trained on the mobile devices, and we all use them,” Kalesnikoff said. “Our guys are very hands-on, but our trimmer operator is the one who is primarily chasing the bins.”

He went on to explain a recent scenario. The operator at the canter can see some of the sort bins, and when he noticed a bin didn’t index all the way down he called the trimmer operator with his radio to tell him about it. The trimmer operator simply lowered the bin using his mobile device instead of having to travel to the bin console to manually press the button.

Kalesnikoff said it is nice to be able to scroll through the mobile screen, and the bin information is all right there.

“It’s great for troubleshooting.

The operators can tell which photoeye is covered, and with the sorter being 300 ft long it saves a lot of time. It makes so much sense to have the control in the palm in your hand.”

Already running with a minimal crew, Kalesnikoff said, “We are using the same number of people, but we are using them in different places than we would have without the benefit of mobile technology.

We planned on not having anybody chasing bins full time, and that’s definitely a nice feature.”

New horizons USNR recognised with the early success of the mobile machine control functionality, that expanding this platform could offer much more to improve the day-to-day operation for mills.

The company introduced this new capability at the recent Ligna and SFPA Expo events in Hannover and Atlanta, and is receiving much interest from the industry.

Strength in abundance The words ‘Heavy Duty’ are thrown around regularly in the context of forestry equipment but in fewer applications are they so much a necessity than in the world of shredding and grinding forestry and other industrial waste

N

ot surprising given the jobs we ask our shredding and grinding equipment to undertake, the focus from manufacturers is generally on the strength of their units. Unlike in other industry sectors where the importance of various aspects of performance is spread across multiple facets of the machine, for shredders and grinders durability is the standout feature that needs to make the grade.

So, unlike other industry industry sectors, International Forest Industries does not particularly like to see a huge departure in focus from the shredder and grinder manufacturers

and so we are pleased with what we’ve seen from this year’s contributors to our technology review.

Without exception, we can be confident in the robustness of each machine featured this year.

While that’s a great starting point, it doesn’t help the contractor choose which unit is right for his or her specific business and to that end, we have managed to put together a range of equipment with various and specific points of difference.

The Vermeer HG6000TX is well suited to hard-to-reach locals

Vermeer has enhanced its popular HG6000TX track undercarriage horizontal grinder to help improve efficiency on large-scale land clearing and wood processing job sites.

The HG6000TX is powered by a 755 hp (563 kW) Caterpillar C18 Tier 4i/Stage IIIB engine, with an optional 630 hp (470 kW) Tier 3 platform for lesser regulated countries. The Tier 4i/Stage IIIB meets the latest emissions requirements, helping to improve carbon footprints without sacrificing performance.

The HG6000TX is equipped with 66 cm (26 in) double grouser track pads to help reduce ground pressure. The suspension provides 17.8 cm (7 in) of ground clearance under the track undercarriage,

making it ideal for tough-to-reach jobsites and uneven terrain.

Ground speed of the HG6000TX has been increased as well, allowing the unit to move at speeds up to 4.2 km/h for faster moves from jobsite to jobsite to help it keep pace with loading equipment.

The SmartFeed feed system automatically controls grinding speed based on engine RPM levels, and the hydraulic feed roller keeps material moving to maximise loading speed and productivity.

With reversible hammers and tips, the patented Series II duplex drum system simplifies maintenance and nearly doubles the wear life compared to single-sided designs.

The HG6000TX features a thrown object deflector, which reduces the quantity and distance of thrown debris to help increase jobsite safety. A single-piece discharge conveyor belt allows for better flow of material from belly to load-out to prevent bottlenecks.

To transport the machine, the operator can track a grinder onto the new dolly system using a wireless remote control unit from up to 91.4 m (300 ft).

Remote operation allows the operator to engage tracks for onsite manoeuvrability and view and change a variety of settings during operation, while monitoring various engine parameters from inside the loader cab or in a remote location. The new dolly transport system eliminates the need for a conventional truck trailer — such as a drop deck — greatly reducing operating costs and enhancing manoeuvrability.

Originally manufactured as the CBI Magnum Force 5800BT, Terex Environmental Equipment’s TBG650 is an upswing horizontal grinder engineered to provide land clearing companies, mulch yards and demolition wood processors a machine capable of highvolume throughput and maximum reliability.

Terex Materials Processing, a business segment of Terex Corporation, purchased the assets of CBI earlier this year. Portable grinding and chipping machines manufactured by CBI now come under Terex Environmental Equipment (TEE), a division of Terex Materials Processing. TEE was launched in 2011 but it would require purchasing a company with the reputation and long-standing success of CBI to elevate the brand to new heights.

The TBG650, like other portable CBI grinders and chippers, is manufactured out of CBI’s Newton, NH production plant. It may carry a new name and colours, but the TBG650 is still designed and built with the finest components possible. With many of its

standard design principles based off the TBG680 (CBI Magnum Force 6800BT), the TBG650 is an aggressive and economic addition to TEE. Powered by a Caterpillar C-18, 765 hp (570 kW) diesel engine with Tier 4 features, it is a heavy-duty power unit that meets the highest of emission regulations. Weighing less than 63,000 lbs (28,576 kg), it features a 40 in diameter x 48 in wide (1,016 mm x 1,219 mm) upturn, steel-forged drum rotor. It processes logs, stumps and waste wood into high-quality biofuel and mulch.

The TBG650 clamshell hog box opening provides machine servicemen more room behind the screens for increased throughput and ease of maintenance. If screens must be replaced, the opening offers a direct line to lift and remove the existing screens.

A simple push of a button retracts the hog box’s two main locking pins and a second button activates two hydraulic cylinders that lift the entire upper section to a vertical position. To ensure complete customer protection, there is a two-grate system with both top and bottom screens that include shear pin protection. The top screen can be bolted in or loose mounted if the unit is equipped with the optional quick release feature. The anvil and grates are

Slow speed & medium speed shredders The double-shaft shredders of the TDS820 and TDSV20 are Terex’s latest models of mobile shredders. The TDS820 is designed as a double-shaft slow speed shredder while the TDSV20 is a unique mobile concept combining a double-shaft medium speed shredding unit with end product sizing screens. Both machines are in full production out of TEE’s production facility in Dungannon, Northern Ireland.

The TDS820’s independent high-torque shafts eliminate wrappage and allow the machine to shred all types of raw material including household waste, bulky waste, commercial waste, used tyres, green waste and wood waste. A hydrostatic drive and fully

welded tooth configuration offer operators exceptional protection against contaminants whilst giving impressive throughput and excellent material reduction.

A user-friendly colour display can be used to select one of the standard shredding programs or can be used to configure a unique program to suit the application, thus maximising production and efficiency.

If the twin shafts encounter any material blockage, the machine operator can control each shaft with a remote control. To prevent material ingress, each shaft bearing is automatically lubricated, which also improves the service life of the double-shaft setup.

The twin shafts operate between 0-40 rpm and measure 27.5 in in diameter and 78 in in length (700 mm x 2,000 mm).

The medium speed shafts operate up to 160 RPM and have precision machined bolt-on cutting teeth. Its screen system, available in different sizes, comes complete with an intelligent protection system, allowing a desired particle size to be produced, whilst processing foreign objects.

This drivetrain operates extremely economically and provides extremely high torques.

Furthermore, the engine manufacturer promises extremely long service life. During the transition period up to the end of 2015, JENZ will also offering the BA 725 with the old Mercedes-Benz OM 460 engine as an option.

The proven drive concept is also present in the new BA 725. Using the Vario-Flex control system, which is fitted as standard, the operator can continuously adapt the engine speed to the material and therefore save fuel. This is also helped by the JENZ-EnergySaver-function (JES), which enables the entire unit to be run down to tick-over at the push of a button if a short break in operations is required.

The optional Twin Gear gearbox allows the operator to adapt the rotor speed to the source material.

The working speed of the hammer drum can be 500 or 1,000 rpm. A further reduction can be achieved using the varioflex controller. The main benefit of this system is initially the extended application range. Because of different rotor speed levels customers can use the machine for shredding (fast rpm) and chipping (low rpm).

During the course of this necessary conversion other areas of the machine were also optimised.

New engine for Tier 4 final Meeting exhaust emission standards is one of the largest challenges facing chipper manufacturers. All JENZ biomass processors are driven by high-powered, economical

Mercedes-Benz engines. Since the changeover to Tier 3b (beginning of 2012), the exhaust gas is posttreated outside the engine using SCR technology. The chemical reaction in a catalyst changes nitrogen oxide into water and nitrogen. This takes place with the aid of an aqueous urea solution (AdBlue), which is carried in an extra tank.

The next stage, which is the conversion to Tier 4 final, cannot be implemented using the former Mercedes-Benz engines (OM 460, 510 hp). For this reason JENZ has fitted a new engine, the Mercedes-

has been increased by 30%. This enables higher throughput rates and simplifies the feeding, because irregular infeeds are pulled apart by the roller.

JENZ has also improved the proven IPS impact protection system to further reduce the risk of machine damage. If a foreign body enters the machine, the rotor stops, the crosspiece under the rotor swivels downwards and away, the draw-in runs in reverse and the screen basket opens. This means that the foreign body is automatically slung out.

Simple screen basket changing In order to make maintenance and conversion work easier, JENZ is now fitting the new BA 725 with a three part screen basket as standard.

Each segment only weighs 25 kg and can be changed without any problems by only one person.

Older machines can also be fitted out with this new screen basket if the frame is replaced. New screen baskets with larger openings are also available with immediate effect for the manufacture of coarser chipping material.

Improved control system JENZ has set the standards for operation of all machines with its ‘easygreen’ control system irrespective of whether the machine is a chipper, a biomass processor, or an HGV, power takeoff shaft or stationary machine.

In addition to the well-known machine monitoring function, this controller also provides the operator with service and economic data. Job management is a new facility: the terminal allows customer and job data to be

SHREDDERS & GRINDERS recorded, saved and subsequently transferred to a PC via a USB stick so that it can be displayed in Excel. The data can then be used to invoice the customer at a later date.

Easygreen also makes error analysis easier from now on. The terminal saves all the important operating parameters over a period of 10,000 operating hours. If there is a fault, JENZ customer service can access this data to limit the error as quickly as possible.

Extensive basic fittings The BA 725 is a powerful and heavy shredder for the professional processing of biomasses.

The range of use is large, and ranges from garden cuttings and organic waste treatment through fragmentation of scrap, trunk and root wood, up to processing substrate for biogas facilities.

Due to the many possible task definitions, there is a whole series of additional fittings available for the BA 725. This now includes a new, easily-foldable conveyor belt with a discharge height of 4,500 mm and an integrated underride guard. The machine is extremely

stably-built in order to guarantee long service life. This all has an effect on the overall weight. For this reason the BA 725 is mostly fitted out with a triple-axle chassis in the basic version. This means that the operator can obtain road traffic approval, even abroad in Europe.

Doppstadt this year enlarged the range of applications for its DW slow-speed series to include fine shredding through a new roller system. The optional use of four different tooth sizes for shredding is combined with the new innovative ‘Limiter’ re-shredding system.

Therefore, the slow-speed shredders DW 3060 Type F and DW 2060 Power Flap – further developments of the Doppstadt DW Buffalo range – now produce comparably fine material to the high-speed shredders. At the same time this method reduces the undesirable fine fraction to a minimum.

The heart of the new DW series is composed of a solid shredding roller with up to 40 mm (1.6 in) wall thickness, which can be changed within a short time. The new resistant re-shredding system ‘Limiter’ prevents oversize particles in output material. Four different tooth sizes from small to extralarge can be used in one machine.

The tooth row change is possible without tools outside the machine, thus reducing the maintenance and wear costs.

The name of the shredder DW 2060 Power Flap tells a story of its innovative evolution: the use of a hydraulically controlled feeding hopper extension or ‘Power Flap’ enhances the material infeed. Even with bulky material, the throughput

is increased by up to 30%. The Power Flap is activated either automatically or by hand with the Doppstadt-Multicontroller.

The multi-purpose shredder DW 3080 K3 Mammoth for all waste wood, biomass and waste applications works with the new shredding system.

“The scrap-proven machine meets all the challenges and it is equipped with a powerful magnetic separator,” the manufacturer said. “The DW 3080 K3 can also be equipped with an optional limit near-mesh grain separator ‘Selector’.

Peterson’s three-stage grinding process with an up turning rotor and large grate area enables the 6710D to produce materials to exact specifications. Our quickchange multiple grate system makes it easy to customise grate configurations to produce a wide variety of finished materials. Grates are removed through an enlarged

access door on the side wall of the 6710D. The 6710D features Peterson’s Adaptive Control System, which controls all components of the feed system to optimise output. This system monitors the grinding load and varies the speed of the feed system to keep the engine working at the top of its power curve.

The three-speed 20-foot long by 60” wide double slat design tracktype infeed conveyor bed chain serves material to the cuttermill from 18 to 43 feet per minute on the Model 3680 Track, where it is met by a 24” diameter x 60” wide internally driven floating top feed wheel in an arrangement that is easy to feed. The cutting action is performed against the infeed chain which eliminates the need for an anvil, thus there is not a gap that is created between the chain and an anvil for materials to collect and wedge.

ariety and flexibility can either be a core component of a forestry business or an added luxury added on to the primary revenue stream. However it is viewed, contractors looking for that variety generally turn to purpose-built-forestry-machines such as knuckleboom loaders and swing machines.

To ensure maximum applications, these machines have taken on far more robust designs than previously as operators prioritise not only the ability to perform different tasks but also the ability to perform those tasks in more testing environments.

This much is clear from this year’s review of

purpose-built-forestry-machines. Also taking precedence has been greater engine efficiency with fewer emissions to meet new standards, while not sacrificing power. This is a major challenge for the industry and one which manufacturers can be proud they are addressing with genuine success.

In 2009, Tigercat introduced the LS855C, drawing on extensive experience with track machines for harvesting and felling. The unit is a 37 t, purpose built forest-duty carrier that can fell, bunch and shovel timber over steep, soft or environmentally sensitive terrain.

The LS855C’s levelling undercarriage allows it to work in challenging terrain either at the stump or the roadside and

is powered by a Cummins Tier 3 engine producing 194 kW (260 hp) at 2,200 rpm.

Spotting a gap in the industry in 2011, Tigercat built the 880 logger to offer the marketplace a larger forestry carrier in the 42 t class that overcomes many of the issues that owners of converted excavators face.

working with distributor marketing and technical support staff, and, most importantly, owners and operators. Their collective experience in both track carrier design and west coast big timber forestry applications was key to the project’s success.

The 224 kW (300 hp) 880 logger can be equipped for shovel logging, loading or processing with a live heel, power clam, butt-n-top or processing attachment. Depending on the attachment, maximum reach

ranges from 11.4-12.6 m with bare pin lift capacities of 5,580-7,620 kg at full reach.

In 2013, Tigercat followed up with the 875 logger, a 36 t version of the 880 with a smaller undercarriage and scaled back boom lift and reach (6,600 kg at 10.9 m reach). The 875 can be configured with various butt-n-top and power clam grapple options or as a processor carrying heads up to 3,400 kg.

with the N67 Tier 4f engine producing 212 kW (284 hp) at 2200 rpm for North America and the EU. (For other regions, a Tigercat FPT Tier 2 engine is available, which produces 210 kW (282 hp) at 2,200 rpm.)

The LS855C, 875 and 880 loggers are multi-purpose, while at the same time, purpose-built to eliminate the design compromises found in competing excavator conversions. The upper frame assembly and undercarriages are designed for full forest duty. They have been very successful in the marketplace and sold worldwide in loading, roadside processing, shovel logging, harvesting and mill yard applications.

The high horsepower engines in the machines combined with optimized hydraulic circuits, result in significantly increased machine productivity, multi-function performance and travel power while improving fuel efficiency compared to excavator-based forestry carriers.

Tigercat designed new FH400 undercarriages for the machines with large diameter swing bearings and twin swing drive systems.

The large undercarriages offer excellent stability and extremely high tractive effort. The twin swing drive system produces ample slew torque with reduced pinion loads for extended swing system life. The levelling system on the LS855C allows it to work effectively on steep slopes.

One of the most innovative design features of these Tigercat 800 series machines is the closed loop swing drive. The closed loop system eliminates energy loss from swing relief valves during swing acceleration and recovers energy stored in the swinging boom and upper frame assembly during braking. The dedicated swing drive system reserves all main hydraulic pump flow for boom and attachment functions, increasing speed and productivity. A dedicated attachment pump provides additional gains in productivity, multi-function performance and fuel efficiency.

ew innovations for skidder uses this year have been thin on the ground, with only John Deere, Caterpillar and Tigercat showing off upgraded machines or, in some cases, entirely new series.

On the upside for contractors in the market for a new skidder, the scarcity of new products has not been reflected in the quality of the innovations on offer, as those who choose to read on will discover.

Backed by over a half-century of experience, inspired by loggers and proven in tough conditions, the new John Deere L-Series Skidders have officially entered the forest with features that promise to increase uptime and productivity, while lowering daily operating

These new larger grapples – up to a massive 22.3 ft2 (6.8 m2) on the 948L – gives loggers more flexibility to configure a skidder to best match their application.

A newly designed arch and boom configuration also provides a better view to the grapple for easier and more efficient operation.

The L-Series machines combine best-in-class HP and an impressive power-to-weight ratio with a constant engine speed. This allows for superb responsiveness and maximum efficiency. Finally, better machine balance optimises pulling power, while improving stability when climbing hills, navigating adverse terrain or hauling bigger payloads.

Operate in comfort The new operator station on all L-Series machines was designed by loggers for loggers. The bestin-class cab is 25% roomier and more than 50% quieter than John Deere’s previous models. Other fatigue beating comforts include a more efficient HVAC system, more ergonomic controls and plenty of storage space. Finally, an optional rotating seat with joystick steering helps reduce strain on the back and neck.

Technology solutions The new L-Series skidders offer John Deere ForestSight technology, an integrated suite of technology solutions that helps loggers better manage their equipment and operations – on the machine, at the office, and on their mobile devices.

With features like fast, accurate remote diagnostics, rapid service response and on-demand dealer support, ForestSight helps loggers optimise machine performance and maximise uptime. The data and mapping features provide increased visibility to machines and jobsites to increase productivity and efficiency.

The Cat D Series wheel skidder was introduced in 2014 after more than four years in research and development. Caterpillar relied on extensive feedback from loggers and dealers at every stage of the machine’s development.

“Loggers have a more versatile machine that is highly effective in sensitive applications such as first thinnings while maintaining the stability for working in tough conditions,” Matt McDonald, Product Specialist for Caterpillar

Forest Products, said.

While faster, more powerful and more versatile than its previous model, the Cat D series skidders reduces operating costs to loggers.

For example, fuel economy and total fluid efficiency is improved, and extended service intervals reduce maintenance.

There are four models of Cat D Series skidders. They range in horsepower from the Cat 525D (203 hp, 151 kW) to the Cat 555D (275 hp, 205 kW).

The Cat D Series skidders are equipped with the Cat C7.1 ACERT engine. It delivers more power and more fuel economy while complying with both US EPA Tier 4 Final and EU Stage IV emission standards. The D Series also offers a Cat C7.1 ACERT engine that is equivalent to US EPA Tier 3 and EU Stage III emission standards.

Designed for durability and long life, the engine will provide maximum uptime and reduce operating costs.

The cross-flow configuration and compartmentalisation of the engine and cooling system maximise efficiency and reduce debris collection.

Cool ambient air is pulled in from the side – not from the engine compartment – and air is exhausted out the opposite side. The oversized fan spins only as fast as needed to maintain proper operating temperature, and it automatically reverses every 20 minutes to expel debris.

The Cat D Series skidders have a six-speed transmission with gears more evenly distributed in the working zone to maximize efficiency on any terrain and ground conditions. The torque converter enables a smooth start when the skidder has a heavy load. Then the lock-up clutch automatically engages, and the transmission goes into direct drive for high efficiency hauling.

In normal operation, all four wheels move independently.

In poor ground conditions, the independent front and rear differential locks can be engaged separately for better pulling and manoeuvrability. The locks are hydraulically actuated and can be engaged on the go.

A new hydraulic system gives the Cat D Series skidders faster multifunctioning capability and greater lift capacity.

“You can steer, back up and activate arch, boom and grapple functions at the same time,” McDonald said. “Cycle times are significantly faster, increasing productivity.”

Hydraulic system pressure has been increased 15-23%, depending on the model and matched to boom length, to increase lift capacity.

Increased rigidity of the lower frame gives extra support to the bottom guarding to prevent damage from stumps and rocks.

The rear frame, which has to stand up to heavy, swinging and twisting loads, features box-section construction. A pin-mounted blade provides more durability, and bolton edges maximise blade life.

The wheels maintain the speed commanded by the drive pedal, regardless of the traction or pulling torque. When maximum power is reached, speed reduction occurs automatically. The result is reduced site disturbance, longer tire life and improved performance in soft or steep terrain.

EHS Tigercat’s exclusive efficient high speed drive (EHSTM) consists of two variable displacement hydrostatic motors as inputs to the Tigercat transfer case which drives the front and rear axles.

When operating conditions demand high tractive effort, both motors are working. When tractive effort requirements are reduced – for instance, when traveling empty or loaded on flat terrain – all of the pump flow is directed to one motor for higher travel speeds.

EHS provides fast travel speeds, extremely high tractive effort and excellent fuel efficiency.

Turnaround The rotating Turnaround seat provides full rear-facing drive capability and control of all machine functions. An armrestmounted joystick controls the steering function for improved ergonomics. The operator can drive comfortably with the full speed range available either bladeforward or grapple-forward while well anchored and aligned in the seat.

Combined with Tigercat’s hydrostatic driveline, Turnaround helps in applications where long reverses are necessary and short haul skidding where the time and fuel required to turn the machine around reduces productivity and increases costs. Turnaround is also useful for picking up double bunches, managing roadside debris and other decking duties.

Applications The 604C is well suited to selective hardwood logging and steep terrain while the 610C/E is a compact versatile skidder well suited to a variety of clear fell, thinning applications and specialty selective felling applications.

The 615C/E is a quick, compact, six-wheel drive machine best suited to soft or steep terrain, selective felling, oversized logs and other challenging applications.

When lower volumes do not justify the massive production potential of the 635 series, the 615C/E is an ideal fit. We filmed this cutter working on a second thinning job where the stems are 6 inches or so average, many less. This feller buncher is very impressive. The owner has been pleased with fuel consumption and the speed and power of this feller buncher is more than adequate in his thinning and logging operations.

The operators are also making positive comments about the cab interior which has recently been much improved. The old steering column is gone and it opens everything up in terms of visibility and space for your legs. If you have not sat in one of these you should do yourself a favour and hop into one.

Doppstadt Expo 2015 - a Birdâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s-eye View

50 years of Doppstadt: More than 5,000 guests from the environmental and recycling sector experienced two unforgettable days: on 24 and 25 June 2015.

Environmental technology company Doppstadt staged what was arguably the largest European trade show of 2015 in this field on its 220,000 sq.-metre works site (Saxony-Anhalt). On show were over one hundred machines for the shredding, sorting and treatment of waste and biomass. What was unique thereby

was that more than half of the machines could be seen in action. In two-hour live demonstrations, the guests saw how coarse shredders, screening machines and exact hackers shredded tree trunks into sawdust, separated waste from recyclables and sorted pebbles from sand heaps. In doing so, Doppstadt demonstrated its problem-solving skills through combined processes: material collected by machines was initially shredded, then separated into its various components by means of separation processes such as screening, washing or air separation.

This new 6-deck jet veneer dryer, located at Martco, Chopin, LA, is the largest dryer to date in the southern yellow pine region. This dryer will accomplish the equivalent production of two dryers, reducing labor costs by one-half. At the same time it will reduce thermal energy consumption by 10%, and exhaust fugitive emissions by 15%.

This mill is located in Ireland.

The dryer was erected off-line, and once complete it was towed into place and connected to all services under a projected expedited schedule. This allowed Martco the advantage of choosing the optimum time to disrupt its production schedule to install the additional capacity, and allowed the plant to utilize the existing building structure to house the new dryer.
