EDITOR’S COMMENT
Brazil not a pretty picture Olympics tell tale of country in crisis Brazil was granted the 2016 Olympic Games hosting duties in the second leg of the commodities boom (2009-2012), during which iron ore and oil reached record levels and the developing nation boasted one of the, if not the most, exciting forestry opportunities across the Americas.
the athletes leave. Many blame corrupt local bureaucrats for not spending the allotted capital on the planned purge.
Eucalyptus plantations on a magnificent scale were chiefly responsible for the excitement surrounding the forestry sector as they earned investment from foreign firms to produce raw materials for a booming domestic and international market.
The domestic, non-exporting industry is struggling as expected. Though some of their costs have come down with the drop in oil price, the building scene in Brazil outside those lucky few in Rio that have secured an Olympic contract has failed to grow at anything like the rate of the boom years and is therefore providing little demand for forestry products. Prices locally are stubbornly low.
Brazil at that time couldn’t wait for this year and the chance, they said, to showcase what Rio de Janeiro and the country on the whole was all about. Fast-forward seven years and they certainly look like showcasing a true reflection of Rio and Brazil – but for all the wrong reasons. Iron ore has come back from around $180/t to less than $60/t, while oil is down from around $130/barrel to $40/bl. This has decimated the economy built on natural resources.
As the games replicate the Brazil economy, this idea of a two-speed games – one for the international community and one for the locals – is replicated by the forestry sector.
This contrasts starkly against operators based in Brazil but selling into international markets. These companies also enjoy lower input prices but have the added benefit of selling into a market that, while not in fantastic shape, has pockets of growth and plenty of opportunity.
Mirroring this change in fortunes are the streets and general infrastructure in and around Rio, which by most reports are a shambles.
An international market provides a natural hedge in that it offsets the lag from developing nations like Brazil against steady if subdued growth in the US, the biggest economy in the world.
International guests, athletes and the Brazilian elite will enjoy the security of some 85,000 soldiers and police patrolling the streets to safeguard against the chronic crime issues, will travelling into the hotel zone and main Olympic Park on the new metro line.
The real kicker, however, has been the currency. Not only do those exporting into international markets enjoying stronger demand and better prices, but they have the added contrast of selling for US dollars and paying costs locally in Brazilian Real.
But locals have seen no such benefit and are unlikely to do so after the games disappear.
Six years ago, $1 bought you 1.75 Brazilian Real, whereas today you’ll bag yourself 3.24 Brazilian Real. That makes a big difference to the bottom line.
According to a BBC report citing urban planning professor Christopher Gaffney from Zurich University, the games are an ‘almost criminal abrogation of responsibility’. “Millions of the city’s residents live in favelas that have had no improvement, so when we see the equivalent of $15 billion being spent on the Olympics, that money should have been directed to attend the basic needs of the citizens of Rio,” Gaffney is quoted as saying. Guanabara Bay, the centrepiece of the city and the venue for several Olympic water sports is, according to the report, a ‘stinking mass of sewage, household rubbish and industrial pollutants’. Despite promises to clean and sanitise the iconic bay, it remains a disgrace and will be after
4 International Forest Industries | AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2016
There is of course no quick fix. In fairness to Brazil and Rio, progress has been made but just not enough maintain the buoyancy of 2009. As the saying goes: you can see who’s swimming naked when the tide goes out. The bureaucrats and local businesses will need to work a lot harder in the years to come to return the forestry opportunity on the whole to the level seen back when Rio was celebrating landing the games.
Enjoy! Chris Cann Editor

Fassi becomes majority owner of crane manufacturer Cranab Fassi, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of cranes for trucks, becomes the majority owner of the Cranab group with the subsidiaries; Vimek, Bracke Forest and Slagkraft, through the acquisition of Z-forestab´s ownership stake in the company. Z-forestab, a jointly owned company by Inlandsinnovation, Mittkapital and Ekonord, has agreed to sell its stake in Cranab group. Cranab manufactures cranes for forestry equipment and is located in Vindeln outside Umeå, Sweden. Fassi is already a
shareholder in Cranab group and through this deal Fassi becomes the majority owner. Hans Eliasson, Chairman in Cranab group, is positive to Fassi’s increased holding in Cranab: “Fassi has been a shareholder in Cranab for three years and has already contributed significantly to the growth of the company. They operate on a wide international market, and the deal will give us additional growth and new business opportunities. Z-forestab has over the years played a significant role in the strengthening
of the industrial cluster around Cranab group and we look forward to an even stronger cooperation with Fassi”, he comments. “We see the joint development of a new crane product line as an important contributor of future growth in the on-road crane segment. Also, Cranab’s focus on the forestry industry, is a very good complement and an excellent market opportunity to be combined with the other product lines Fassi holds, says Giovanni Fassi”, CEO of the Fassi Group. “I am pleased to see that
Z-forestab´s efforts towards this industrial group structure now shows results”, says Lars Johansson, Chairman in Z-forestab. Peter Gullander, CEO of Inlandsinnovation AB, majority owner of Z-Forestab, is satisfied with the industrial structure that Z-forestab and Fassi has built up around Cranab group. “It has strengthened Cranab’s global competitiveness and secured jobs in northern Sweden”, he says.
Precision Sharpening Devices, Inc., now offers Pneumatic Bevel Buddy, available through Morbark dealer network Precision Sharpening Devices, Inc., has added a new Bevel Buddy™ Chipper Knife Sharpener to its product line. In addition to corded and cordless versions, the Bevel Buddy is now available in a pneumatic-powered option. The Bevel Buddy is available through Morbark® and its worldwide dealer network. Since 1988 Precision Sharpening Devices, Inc., has been manufacturing counter grinding/ back beveling equipment for knives used by a variety of industries, mostly for the pulp and paper, sawmill, plywood, and whole tree chipping markets. The Bevel Buddy handheld sharpener allows the knives to be re-sharpened without needing to be removed from the machine. The knives can be re-sharpened this
way two to three times, reducing customer downtime. “The Pneumatic Bevel Buddy™ Chipper Knife Sharpener offers our customers another product that helps them operate their equipment at the highest levels of efficiency,” said Mark Mills, President of Precision Sharpening Devices, Inc. “The benefit of the pneumatic model is that the unit will have even power throughout its life for a smoother grind. A batterypowered unit will lose power as the battery loses its charge, but the corded and pneumatic units will not.” Another improvement is that the indexing procedure can be performed six times, at a half-turn each, before the duplex abrasive is reversed and the Bevel Buddy head is indexed back to the start of the
indexing procedure for another six indexes, after which the abrasive must be replaced. “Like Morbark, Precision Sharpening Devices is not content to rest on its laurels,” said John Foote, Morbark Senior Vice President. “They are continually improving their products to increase customer success. The Bevel Buddy helps our customers keep their chipper knives sharp to be more efficient and more productive.”
The use of the Bevel Buddy will improve a chipper operator’s maintenance process while greatly decreasing overall operating costs involved in chipping. These sharpeners work with disc- and drum-style chippers and conventional pocket style, face-mounted and reversible/ disposable knife systems, as well as recyclers with chipping knives. The use of these sharpeners will show a cost savings in knife steel and machinery wear parts, along with increased production.

Tigercat releases 570 harvesting head Tigercat continues to expand its range of harvesting heads with the new 570, a robust, high-performance, two-wheel drive harvesting head The new Tigercat 570 harvesting head offers excellent productivity and reliability, utilizing many of the structural and hydraulic performance benefits of the larger 575, in a package ideally suited to Tigercat H845 series carriers. The wheel arms, pins, bushings, cylinders, feed motors and rotator are shared with the 575 model for proven strength and long life. The chassis is designed for optimum strength-to-weight with focus on visibility, component protection and quick service access. A new integrated valve package enhances performance and service access with fewer hoses and connections to improve reliability. Clean electrical routing with common service parts further increases up-time.
Flexible configurations Dual-purpose harvesting and processing knives — with
replaceable blades and tips — come standard with independent cylinders as the ultimate solution for crooked or heavily limbed stems. The dual, independent cylinders allow the knives to follow the stem profile, improving control and delimbing quality. The 570 is flexible and configurable. Optional hydraulic front knife timing improves picking performance in processing applications, while optional harvesting knives with shorter tips enhance harvesting dexterity. Various wheel and motor options are available to tailor performance to application. The 570 is most productive working with trees 15-50 cm (6-20 in) in diameter in softwood and hardwood stands. Although best suited to the Tigercat H845 series, the 570 is designed to work with the H822 and H855 series carriers or a 20-25 tonne forestry excavator.
Tigercat D5 control system The 570 and 575 harvesting heads both use the Tigercat D5 Control System which combines a solid and field proven hardware and bucking control system with a Tigercatdeveloped head control and user interface that offers simplicity and intuitive operator navigation.
The Tigercat D5 control system is available in three levels of bucking control and reporting: Tigercat D5 Prio, Tigercat D5 Prio PC and Tigercat D5 Optimization, allowing customers to tailor the system to their needs.

New G-Series feller buncher cab Tigercat is continuing to evolve the G-series driveto-tree feller bunchers with the introduction of an improved operator’s cab Cab comfort and ergonomic design are key to operator productivity in the woods and the new G-series cab is quiet and well-equipped. On the outside of the G-series drive-to-tree feller buncher cab, the work lights have been moved into enclosures incorporated into the cab structure to better protect them from falling trees or limbs. LED lights improve reliability and brightness over the previous halogen models. The new lights produce a more even light pattern that provides better coverage around the machine. High output LEDs are available as an option. Tigercat feller bunchers have always provided unmatched visibility. The G-series now takes line of sight to a new level. The front window area is nearly 10% larger. Combined with Tigercat’s lowprofile boom structure, it provides exceptional visibility to the front. The rear quarter windows are over 20% larger so the view over the back tires is the best in the industry — an asset in thinning applications.
Climate controlled seat The air suspension seat features pull-through ventilation which moves hot, humid air away from the operator’s legs and back, producing a cooling effect. For colder weather, the seat is also heated. The new seat can be adjusted two inches wider than the previous seat. The electronic control display module is now fitted in an adjustable mount so that the operator can position it for optimal visibility. Frequently used controls have been integrated into the joystick pods to make them easier to reach.
Quiet and comfortable
insulation and interior finishing have been improved. The working noise level is 76 decibels which is similar to an automobile on the highway. Finally, the new cab includes a full range of accessories for operator comfort. The cab includes 12 and 24 volt power sockets, two large cup holders, a cell phone holder and two USB ports that can be used for charging phones
Air-conditioning and heating vents have been repositioned to improve airflow for cooling and heating. As a result, there is a more even distribution of air to the operator and much better defrost. There is no shortage of air supply for operator comfort in the cab. Front window and skylight shades help to reduce heat build-up when working in bright sunshine. Cab

SAWO A/S has developed a powerful fell hook for the forwarder market IFI spotted the SAWO felling head at Forexo, Mimizan. The head was proudly being shown by its designer Jens Christian Abild fitted to the new Ecolog 574D Forwarder. SAWO has since the beginning of the 90’s installed different models of fell heads, to saw and tilt for wood chippers. They started to install on forwarders later on, where they had some challenges – in particular they were prone to breaking down. This was due to various types of wood growth in Denmark. They tried a Finnish model but this had the same problems – Sawo had to extensively reinforce the heads.
They saw the need for a stronger model designed for tough conditions. At this point they decided to produce their own head utilizing their past experience and after many discussions with customers, produced a brand new head. The result is an optimal fell hook with a perfectly placed saw. They have made over 30 fell hooks with customers finding new tasks for the head including clearing building sites, thinning of windbreaks, thinning of stands inside cities and in holiday and forest areas. When a customer uses the fell hook for some time, usually they

order another, to keep up with the tasks it can handle. The first fell hooks have now been running for 7.000 hours without problems with the installation. It has a very low height, easy to cut down between the whirl of branches, and with an optimal saw position and a low weight in spite of a strong construction. This year, sawmill technology company, Serra, received an award and was therefore promoted to membership of the club of elite innovators. The Bavarian company has also taken part in a sophisticated science competition through the University of Economics in Vienna, which scrutinised innovation management and the breakthroughs. The successful Serra story started 26 years ago. The company
founder, Hans Fritz, developed the first mobile sawmill in 1990 and seven years ago his son, Johann Fritz, took over and today leads the family company. More than a half of his time, the Bavarian businessman works on new innovations and improvements. His 36 employees replicate his devotion to new concepts and design by constantly submitting new ideas. Today the family company sells its mobile, stationary and industrial sawmilling technology in 77 countries all over the world. “We have learned in our long company history, that we can only survive on the world market, if we bring unique products to it, which we develop, build and commercialize also in a unique way,” Johann Fritz said. Since some machines are also portable, the corrosion protection is very important. The newly developed mobile sawmills from Serra are the only ones in the market that can count on a completely galvanized main frame. Because of the international markets which are being supplied by Serra, the technology has been developed to work under different conditions: -48°C (-54°F) in Siberia or 48 °C (118 °F) or the high humidity of tropical countries. For these conditions the electric, hydraulic and materials have been carefully selected and developed. Because of this, the sawmills have a very low
depreciation level, granting that after a years the machines maintain a very high resell price. Based on special customer’s requirements, the company develops bespoke machines. For example, for a balsa products manufacturer. Among their products there are the wings of wind power plants. For the UN in Liberia during the Ebola crises, two Serra sawmills were the only producers of lumber for hospitals and administration buildings. More than 50% of the Serra sawmills are manufactured, delivered and used as stationary. The company also produces industrial sawmilling plants.

Rawlings Manufacturing celebrates 40 years The Rawlings family knows the meaning of hard work
Rawlings is a story of multi-generational size reduction improvisation
The family business started out as a small sawmill construction and consulting company in 1976. While growing a successful business and reputation within the forest industry, Pat and Cliff Rawlings raised their three sons, John, Craig and Mike, in and around sawmills, working and learning the industry from the bottom up. In 1984, Cliff died suddenly, leaving Pat and their sons in charge of the family enterprises. HALCO AD:Layout 3 3/8/10
Pat continued to work in executive management until her retirement in early 2000.
History of the Rawlings wood hog In the 1980s, Cliff Rawlings had tinkered with enough wood grinders that he developed the Rawlings solid rotary wood hog. During this time, sawmills had generally used hammer mills to pulverize bark into hog fuel for 17:22
boilers, but many had given up on processing cedar because the bark was so stringy. Cliff’s new grinder used a system of solid rotors that efficiently reduced the more challenging bark without the usual equipment breakdown. The same concept with some improvising to the Super Hi-Inertia rotor is being utilized today in the Rawlings wood hog design. Since then, the family-owned and operated company has manufactured and marketed several series of product lines offering a complete line of horizontal and vertical grinders in a range of sizes and models.
Saw dust in their veins All three sons have continued working in and around the forest and sawmill industries. Some would say they have sawdust in their veins. John Rawlings, current Owner and President of Rawlings Manufacturing, also known as the ‘Hog Doctor’, has continued to manufacture the Rawlings wood hog, improvising and improving
on his father’s original rotary hog designs, while also developing new and improved wood and bark recovery systems. Craig Rawlings, President and CEO of Forest Business Network, is a walking textbook on woody biomass, and is recognized as a national expert and leader in under-utilized timber and woody biomass. And Mike Rawlings, President of Rawlings Industrial, is a leading builder of sawmills, chip mills, and planer mills and has earned the trust of mill owners, project managers and engineers nationwide. Rawlings Manufacturing still knows the importance of owning and operating a family owned company. The next generation of Rawlings sons, Cliff and Nick Rawlings, currently work at the company and bring new energy to the future vision at Rawlings. Much of the family’s growth is a result of the rock solid work ethic that is inherited from their parents and grandparents.

LUMBER PROCESSING NEWS - WORLD MARKETS
Global Timber and Wood Products Market Update Following is an excerpt from the Global Lumber Mark et Update from the most recent issue of the Wood R esource Quarterly (www.woodprices.com): Global lumber trade Global softwood lumber trade reached an all-time high in 2015 when, according to estimates by the WRI, 118 million m3 was traded internationally. This year has started out with even higher volumes being traded around the world; the 1Q/16 shipments were approximately 20% higher than in the first quarter of 2015. All countries on the “top-10 import list” increased their lumber importation during the first few months this year with the biggest changes in import volumes being in the US, China and Egypt.
North America There was mostly upbeat news about the US lumber market in the first few months of 2016; housing starts in March were the highest for that month since 2007, lumber consumption in early 2016 was 14% higher than the same period in 2015, lumber imports in JanuaryApril were up 42% as compared to early 2015, and lumber prices in
May reached their highest levels in over a year. Despite increased domestic wood demand, lumber production on the US West coast actually fell about four percent during the first four months this year. Canadian production was sharply higher during the first three months of 2016 as compared to the same period in 2015, with an increase of 19% in the Eastern provinces and eight percent in British Columbia.
Northern Europe The Nordic countries increased lumber export volumes in both 2014 and 2015 and the trend continued in early 2016 with shipments during the first two months being up nine percent for Sweden and 14% for Finland. With the continued weak demand for lumber in Europe, Asian and African markets have received larger volumes of Nordic lumber so far this year as compared to early 2015. Although the US has increased total
importation of lumber by as much as 44% during the first quarter this year, Sweden has only shipped six percent more than in the 1Q/15 and Finnish sawmills have not sent any lumber at all.
China Importation of lumber to China from the two largest supplying countries, Russia and Canada, were 33% and 4% higher respectively, during the first four months of 2016 as compared to the same period in 2015. Shipments of predominantly pine from Russia have gone up substantially the past year with deliveries in April this year 1.1 million m3 as compared to 820,000 m3 in April 2015. Despite the significant depreciation of the Rouble during 2015 and 2016, Canadian lumber prices have actually fallen faster than Russian lumber prices in US dollar terms.
Japan Housing starts of 2x4 houses in Japan were up 3% in the 1Q/16 as compared to the same quarter in
2015. Increased lumber demand has been met both by higher production at the country’s sawmills and by increased importation. In the 1Q/16, import volumes increased by 12% yearover-year with particularly Finland, Sweden and Austria shipping more lumber this year.
Russia Lumber exports from Russia have fallen for two consecutive quarters, with the 1Q/16 shipments being almost 10% lower than in the 3Q/15, but six percent higher than in the 1Q/15. Most of the recent decline has been in shipments to the CIS countries, including Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan and Tajikistan, but trade with Egypt and some European countries were also down. Export prices have fallen quite substantially in dollar terms the past two years at the same time as values in Rouble terms were close to record high levels in the 1Q/16.
Gällö Timber invests SEK 80 million ($9.5 million) in increased kiln capacity and in a new boiler Gällö Timber, jointly owned by SCA and Persson Invest, invests SEK 80 million ($9.5 million) in increased kiln capacity and in a new boiler. The investment implies an increase of production in the Gällö sawmill in Northern Sweden. Through the investment the present transport of sawn timber from Gällö to Stugun
for drying will cease. “This is wonderful news for us at Gällö Timber”, says Urban Wiklund, Managing Director of Gällö Timber. “With this investment we will increase our annual production from slightly more than 300,000 cubic metres to 350,000. This means that our competitiveness will increase and that our owners believe in us and our continued development. ”The investment comprise a new boiler that will use the residue products from the sawmill as fuel and produce the energy needed for the sawmill’s operation, and a TC-kiln of the same kind as has already been installed in SCA’s sawmills in Bollsta and Tunadal.
18 International Forest Industries | AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2016 Reserve your space today...
With the new kiln, all of the sawmill’s production can be dried on the site. The kiln and the rest of the sawmill has the capacity for a substantial increase in production. Today roughly 50,000 cubic metres of sawn timber is transported from Gällö Timber to Stugun for drying. A substantial part of this is further refined through planing and painting. “The change in Stugun will affect a couple of the employees, but the current situation will not lead to any redundancies”, says Urban Wiklund. “SCA’s refining operations in Stugun have grown and Stugun is today the biggest site for wood refining in Jämtland. We are the biggest supplier and
SCA Stugun is among our biggest customers. Together we make up a strong team with roughly 170 employees in the production and a lot more working in wood supply and forestry.”

Brammer optimises lubrication solution for busy sawmill Introducing an advanced oil mist lubrication system has resulted in potential annual savings of close to £3,000 for BSW Timber Dalbeattie, a major supplier of softwood Based in Scotland, BSW Timber Dalbeattie operates the largest single-line sawmill in Britain, with an annual capacity of 300,000m³ of sawn timber. Its eight multihead bandsaws are in near-constant use across ten shifts per week, utilising 70.4 litres of lubrication each week, and were identified by their Saw Doctors as a potential for cost savings after total lubrication costs were calculated at just under £4,900 per annum. As part of a programme of activity to reduce running costs, the engineering team called in Brammer, the UK’s leading distributor of industrial maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) products, to recommend a more sustainable solution. The original lubrication system was based on a gravity drip feed unit. Upon inspection, Brammer’s technical specialist Peter Rutherford identified the opportunity to replace this legacy
system with a combination of an oil mist lubricator, air regulator and timer solenoid, and a test unit was set up to provide a benchmark. The test rig comprised of four spray points across a 7m length of 6mm plastic pipe, positioned over the saw blade where correct lubrication would reduce friction and drag over the timber. The timer solenoid valve was set to action a six-second spray every four minutes, while a regulator maintained pressure of 6 Bar throughout the system. Gary McCaig of BSW Timber Dalbeattie explains: “The test run revealed that the new system used just 0.4l of lubricant per shift, or 0.8l per day. Across average weekly operations this equates to 4l of oil per unit, a dramatic reduction from the previous usage figure of 70.4l per week. With potential cost savings of more than £2,900 per year, the solution was rolled out to replace gravity drip-feed units on

all eight multihead bandsaws.” Neil McGrath, Maintenance Manager of BSW Timber Dalbeattie added: “Aside from the clear financial benefits, the oil mist lubrication system has also allowed us to increase efficiency through greater control over lubrication supply – we can now be sure that the optimal amount
is being supplied to the correct areas. This level of control also delivers improved health and safety as less oil being used means potential slip hazards are reduced. Additionally, the quality of the end product is also improved as there is less contamination to timber and sawdust.”

Global timber and wood products market update Sawlog prices in Austria and Germany have fallen to their lowest levels in 10 years and both countries are still major log importers of logs, reports the Wood Resource Quarterly. Prices for domestic and imported sawlogs in Austria and Germany have been falling during 2015 and 2016 to levels not seen in ten years. While domestic log prices have declined, they are still among the highest in Europe and many sawmills in the two countries have increased importation of lower cost sawlogs from neighbouring countries the past few years. Softwood sawlog prices in both Austria and Germany have been in steady decline for about two years and in the 1Q/16 they reached their lowest level since 2006 (in US dollar terms),. Although less dramatic, prices have also trended downward in Euro terms with average prices currently being 12% lower than two years ago. Despite the recent price declines, sawmills in the two countries have some of the highest wood costs in Europe. The high costs for domestically sourced sawlogs have driven sawmills to increasingly source wood rawmaterial from neighbouring countries where log prices are lower. Germany and Austria are the second and third largest importers of softwood logs in the world and Germany in particular has increased importation substantially over the past five years. In 2008, Germany was actually a net exporter of logs of about 1.6 million m3 but the flow of logs has since turned around and the country was a net importer of 5.4 million m3 in 2015. The major log-supplying countries in 2015 and early 2016 have been the Czech Republic, Poland, Norway and Estonia. Austria imported just over 6.5 million m3 of softwood logs in 2015 and is on pace to reach closer to 7.5 million m3 in 2016. Three countries supply about 85% of the import volume, namely the Czech Republic, Germany and Slovenia. The biggest shifts in log sourcing over the past ten years have been the sharp reduction in importation from Germany, while Slovenian imports have gone up from 180,000 m3 in 2006 to 1.2 million m3 in 2015. A majority of the imports are sawlogs for the domestic lumber industry, often at lower cost than the domestic market prices, according to the WRQ (www.woodprices.com). However, some Austrian pulp mills are also importing marginal pulpwood volumes, predominantly from Slovenia, to supplement locally sourced pulplogs and wood chips.

BSW Timber fires up £2.5m biomass boiler at Carlisle sawmill BSW Timber has become the first UK sawmiller to generate electricity from biomass fuel with the commissioning of a £2.5 million Combined Heat and Power (CHP) boiler at its Carlisle mill. The state-of-the art 3.2 MW CHP Boiler is now operational and forms the latest phase of BSW’s £11 million investment programme in biomass energy across its mills in the UK and Latvia. Over the last five years, BSW has commissioned seven biomass boilers at sawmills across the UK and Latvia, resulting in total heat capacity of some 38 MW to generate heat for the kiln drying process. The Carlisle plant will provide heat for the kilns, treatment plant, and offices whilst also producing electricity to be used in the sawmill production process. The CHP plant was delivered in partnership with
biomass experts Dallol Energy. Welcoming the new Carlisle CHP plant, BSW Timber’s CEO Tony Hackney said: “Our investment in biomass technology means that we are now saving more than 12,500 tonnes of CO2 (3,421 tonnes carbon) each year, across the business. “The Carlisle biomass plant is our most significant investment to date, and has been delivered together with partners Dallol Energy on time and on budget.” He added: “Adopting biomass technology as a heating solution has delivered both financial and environmental benefits in parallel with of BSW’s ambitious growth plans, with all plants set to create a return on the initial investment within two to three years. “Not only does biomass significantly reduce our carbon emissions, it also makes overall

site operations more sustainable.“ BSW Timber is the UK’s largest consumer of home-grown sawn softwood timber consuming almost two million tonnes each year. Much of the timber is dried in on-site kilns which were previously fuelled by oil boilers, with the coproducts of the sawmilling process - including wood chips and bark – removed from the site by road transport. By transferring their heat production to CHP boilers and using co-products as fuel, BSW is significantly reducing its reliance on road transport. As well as the Carlisle plant, BSW Timber operates two 3MW biomass boilers in Newbridge-onWye, a 5MW plant in Dalbeattie, an 8MW plant in Latvia and two 5MW plants in Fort William. Stora Enso starts Laminated Veneer Lumber production line at Varkaus Mill in Finland Stora Enso’s new Laminated Veneer Lumber production line at the Varkaus Mill in Finland is one of the most modern in the world. Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) is a high-strength wood product used primarily in structural construction applications. It is comparable in strength to concrete or steel. Premium logs are rotary peeled into 3mm thick veneers and bonded together under heat and pressure. Every sheet of veneer is individually measured in terms of density, moisture content and modulus of elasticity to optimise the product strength and performance. Sheets are then reglued into a continuous billet. LVL by Stora Enso can be used in a wide range of structural applications, from posts and beams, roof trusses and prefabricated building elements to wind power installations and other complex engineered structures. There is also huge potential for large-scale construction solutions
that combine LVL and CLT (CrossLaminated Timber) – Stora Enso is the only company in the wood industry that offers both CLT and LVL. LVL is a renewable and carbonneutral alternative to structural concrete and steel, which can have large environmental footprints. The advantages of LVL will become increasingly important as population growth and urbanisation further increase the demand on resources to construct housing and buildings, and as part of the solution to combat climate change. From a customer perspective, LVL is a cost-effective and lightweight material that has a high load-bearing capacity. Furthermore, it has a homogeneous and stable quality and does not warp or twist during its lifespan. LVL also has low logistical costs due to its lightweight nature, and is easy to work with on construction sites.

high cutting speed allows the use of saw blades with smaller saw kerfs. The use of counter bearings for the saw arbors with higher speeds reduces the bearing load to a minimum and the saw arbor units are suitable for robust and continuous operation. The counter bearings are hydraulically pulled off the saw arbors and moved upwards on a carriage. The saw arbors can easily be accessed for a comfortable, safe and fast tool change. Partly mechanised and fully automatic systems are available for changing the tools. The maximum drive power is 1,000 kW. Even more options for bucking optimization Last year can be remembered as the year for bucking systems. In fact, Comact has installed several such systems since the beginning of 2015. Among new bucking options, the Comact development team has programmed new algorithms to
the driving forces to minimise the bearing load. “The high drive power makes it possible to split multiple products and to process large cross sections with high feed speeds,” the manufacturer said. “The machine is therefore suitable for saw lines where the existing split saw is reducing capacity.” The single components of the machine produced by Linck are of high quality and precise design to ensure “excellent lumber surface quality and exceptional dimension accuracy”. This accuracy is also achieved by the optional use of guide plates being installed at the in and/or outfeed side, depending on the application. A saw blade spraying device is available for processing resinous wood such as larch, protecting the saw blades against resin. Additional advantages are the increased life time of the saw blades as well as reduced power consumption. “The double arbor circular saw MKS has already successfully

Even more accurate detection of pith location Even though the GradExpert™ is a leading grading system on the market, the Comact team keeps striving to push the envelope when it comes to equipment performance and thus set new standards for the industry. Although some developments may seem subtle, they add up to a substantial difference on the final grading result. Enhanced pith location detection is among these recent, noteworthy developments. By knowing where the pith is, you get a more accurate knot detection and you’re able to understand its exact orientation in the board so you get a better knot calculation and corewood assesment. In the end, you get the right recovery for it. Board surface reading, combined with board end reading, provides grain slope and thereby allows even more accurate board grading and optimization. This is indeed a worthwhile improvement.
Before vs After. Before, there was over detection of knots in the stain and now it is fixed
Detection of drying stains Use of direct fired kilns is commonplace in some areas such as the Southern United States. However, it represents a challenge for automated grading systems since it can leave some ash deposits on boards. In cases where board is too thin or narrow to be planed, such deposits can remain on its surfaces when it is graded. These stains are not defects per se. However, in cases where they are not properly identified, they can be misinterpreted as defects and can lead to grading lumber below its actual grade. Comact software developers have analyzed these stains based on data provided by tracheid detection and vision systems and have thus come up with a filter to identify them. Doing so enables grading boards properly by preventing ash deposits from being considered as a natural wood defect.
The team has drawn on their experience with existing highperformance stain filters to come up with this particular one.
All-new user tools In addition, over the last year Comact has not only developed even friendlier user interfaces, but also a high-speed simulation tool. These tools can be used on any piece of Comact equipment. In this

way, new reports, mobile interfaces as well as an all-new dashboard to keep track of production have been made available to Comact clients. The simulation tool has also been enhanced in order to have the capacity to simulate over 1,000 boards/minute. It is now possible to simulate a production work shift in a few minutes for the purpose of testing, for instance, the impact of a product value change or a new
product addition. Since this improvement does not require changing any computer hardware, it is all the more attractive for both user and management. Generally speaking, these new tools can be readily integrated to existing equipment thanks to a mere software upgrade.

ith the needs of multiaxis forest products manufacturing equipment in mind, Delta Computer Systems from Washington State, USA has delivered the new RMC200 closedloop electro-hydraulic motion controller. RMC200 extends the capabilities of previous generations of RMC motion controllers with regard to the number of axes which may be controlled and synchronized simultaneously by a single unit, making the Delta RMC200 the most capable electro-hydraulic motion controller offered to industry. “Our customers love the capabilities and ease-of-use of our motion controllers, but increasingly need more axes than we have offered in one controller,” said Steve Nylund, Delta Computer Systems CEO. “The new RMC200 removes the 8-axis limit of our RMC150
controller, and offers ample processing power for future capabilities as well. To make it easy for our existing customers to use the new controller, the RMC200 controllers use Delta’s field-proven RMCTools software for setup, tuning, programming and diagnostics.” RMCTools shortens application development and deployment times with a graphical programming interface, a powerful motion plotting tool, and a Tuning Wizard that automates the process of setting control loop gains. With the capacity to handle closed-loop control of up to 32 motion axes, a single RMC200 can manage the motion of a complete forest products processing production line. As with the other Delta controllers—RMC75 (which can control one or two axes) and RMC150 (which can control up to eight axes) – the
RMC200 has special capabilities for synchronizing the motion of multiple axes, enabling the construction of machines with scalable performance and quick production changeovers. Also like Delta’s other controllers, RMC200 provides builtin support for controlling pressure/ force as well as position/velocity/ acceleration. The controller can transition smoothly between these control modes, enabling smooth, reliable motion. Through use of a programmable “Feature Key,” the RMC200 will enable only the number of control loops that a customer’s application needs, and hence Delta is able to deliver flexibility and charge for the exact functionality that is required, saving customers money. Other physical enhancements include a display screen on the CPU, I/O modules with push-in wire connectors, and fully-encased, user-installable modules that “rockin” to provide power-sequencing capability. The unit’s modular expandability makes RMC200 virtually “futureproof,” supporting expanded control and I/O interfacing compatibility as new modules are developed ensuring that it will continue to be the most capable electro-hydraulic motion controller offered to industry. Scanning & Optimisation – LMI TECHNOLOGIES

LMI shows way to 3D future Three-dimensional sensors have a key role to play in quality monitoring of lumber machinery
T
hree-dimensional sensors have long been an essential technology in wood optimization for saw and planer mills, according to LMI Technologies’ Terry Arden. Originally introduced to maximize lumber volume recovery, next generation 3D sensors have given mill operators the ability to optimize for value recovery using integrated colour imaging and tracheid detection that evaluate wood for defects like knots. Grade-based wood optimization alone, however, is not the only role 3D sensors play in today’s mills. These devices are now being used for another critical mill function: quality monitoring of lumber machinery, otherwise known as error proofing. “In error proofing, 3D sensors monitor the mill machinery itself, looking for early signs of wear and tear or non-conformance,” Arden said. “For example, the vibration or kerf variation of a saw blade, or width cutting accuracy of an edger or gang saw. “Such an important monitoring function allows mill operators to continually assess mill machinery performance, determine
maintenance and upgrade schedules, and track whether or not log and board processing is satisfying optimal dimension and quality specifications.”
Case in Point: Gang Lumber Size Control To illustrate this all-important function of 3D sensors in the modern mill, it helps to look at a real-world example application: gang lumber size control. As one of the first steps in lumber manufacturing, a log enters the sawmill and is processed through a primary breakdown machine, which typically produces side boards and a centre cant. The cant is then fed through a gang sawing machine to further break down the cant into boards (see image 1).
saws ‘snaking’, or not tracking straight through the cant. In addition, feed and press rolls can wear down unevenly, and bearings can degrade inside the gang sawing machine, causing unwanted pressure to impact the saws and saw guides.
The result? Any one of these conditions is a potential cause of poorly sawn lumber. Boards that are produced at the incorrect size have to be remanufactured, typically resulting in a loss in material value and extra cost in production time in the mill.
Wear and tear on the gang sawing machine
3D smart sensors and the gang lumber size monitoring system
The gang sawing machine is subject to heavy wear and tear. Its saw guide pads and saw teeth are also subject to wear over time, and can be damaged by foreign objects in the cant, such as nails and rocks. Wear, tear and operational damage can drive the saw guides out of alignment and result in the
“The ideal position for an automatic lumber size monitoring system is at the outfeed of each machine centre, allowing the system to quickly detect a problem and avoid prolonged production of defective boards,” according to Arden. This application is well suited

With a compact and pre-calibrated 3D smart sensor capable of measuring at high speed to monitor board widths, the sensor can inspect each and every board for dimensional accuracy and communicate results directly to a PLC.
How to implement the machine monitoring system A Gocator 3D smart sensor is mounted above (or can be mounted above and below) the cant as it exits out of the gang saw, scanning the sawn surface/s of the cant after it has been gang sawn into boards. Gocator’s built-in Groove-X measurement tool can measure each board width and monitor kerf size quickly and efficiently without any custom software programming. These built-in tools are configured through a standard web browser. The sensor supports several industrial PLC protocols to deliver the X positions of the edges of all the boards across the block. Based on these measurements, the PLC will then monitor the board widths for unwanted variation (see

The benefits of monitoring lumber machinery Lumber quality control began with manually measuring several points along the length of a board with a tape measure, then moved to using a mechanical caliper to QC test small samples of boards throughout the mill process, according to Arden. “Fast forward to the present day, and non-contact sensor based measurements have radically changed the lumber processing game,” he said. “Next generation 3D smart sensors now offer mills a simple, automated solution with the ability to perform high speed built-in measurements for use in many machine centres in the sawmill and planer mill. “This powerful 3D all-in-one smart sensor technology can be integrated directly into a machine centre to monitor and error proof critical processes, reliably tracking manufacturing performance, and identifying malfunctioning cutting tools and components at the point

of occurrence. Perhaps its greatest strength, however, is the ability to eliminate the gap between the occurrence and detection of events that lead to incorrect manufacturing.” There are numerous benefits of using 3D smart sensors in monitoring machinery, including a) their ability to use measurements together with programmed limits to monitor sawing variation and produce alarms; b) pass the measurements off to a computer to provide detailed SPC analysis to identify sawing variation as ‘snake’, edge-to-edge ‘wedging’, or end-to-end taper to help identify
root cause/s within the machine that could be resulting in off-size lumber; c) and finally, analyze opportunities to increase feed speed (throughput) or reduce saw kerf and/or target sizes while staying ‘in control’ with output lumber sizes.

How does it work? The first laser emits a series of dots spaced at ¼ in and the second laser emits a solid line spaced at ½ in from the dotted line.
The first laser line provides information on the direction of the fibre and the second laser line provides information on the tracheid effect in the fibre. By combining this data, they can identify these defects with a very high level of accuracy and with minimal false detection. The main advantages provided by the TBS-2 defects detection technology are:

Applied technology, winning results At least as important as developing new technology, is applying existing technology in new, innovative ways. Once proven, it is incumbent on suppliers like USNR to push the boundaries to get the greatest value from the technology. Following are two examples, among many, where USNR is pushing boundaries and expanding your benefits

Incorrectly aligned saw blades over time generate cracks in the tooth base as well as wear on band wheels and saw guides. Vision Tilt actively corrects the saw band’s position on the band wheel, which not only minimizes wear but also improves sawing accuracy. Besides the camera, Vision Tilt also includes a PLC with software for monitoring and adjustment. The surveillance images from all saws are displayed on one and the same screen for the operator’s visual information. The intelligent saw band control system alerts the operator to faults such as saw bands showing signs of imminent rupture.

Virtual Lug Loader™ Our newest use of vision technology is the Virtual Lug Loader™ (VLL). VLL uses a system of belts in combination with our MillTrak lumber flow control vision system to quickly and efficiently load boards into lugs. This allelectric board feeding solution is a unique design with no overhead feeding apparatus; a series of belts are progressively adjusted to separate, then feed the boards into lugs.
The VLL can be setup to run each of the mill’s product widths at the optimum speed and timing to minimize user intervention. In a typical application two MillTrak sensors are mounted above the flow; the first controls the backlog to the VLL, and the second controls each successive sets of belts. The VLL operates at speeds up to 200 lugs/minute. The design of the VLL looks deceptively simple. It uses the barest of mechanical apparatus to perform its task. With no cams, no cylinders, no overhead devices, lumber just flows seemingly effortlessly. Here’s why you’ll like it: • F ewer moving parts mean less maintenance is required • F ar less chance of jam-ups than with other designs • R eliable production, no matter what your product mix • All electric, no pneumatics • B etter line-of-sight with no overhead feeding apparatus • E fficient control via MillTrak mounted above the flow
How it works
This screen capture shows how the Vision Tilt camera monitors the saw teeth position in real time, and in relation to the band wheel’s front edge.
The first set of belts creates a gap by running faster than the chains on the upstream storage table. The second, third and, if required, fourth sets of belts (depending on product and application) successively correct the board’s skew. Each of these skew correction belts has its own motor
for independent actuation, allowing the lug loader to straighten each of the skewed boards. The final set of belts (phasing belts) time the board to the lugged transfer, depositing each board into a separate lug. • I mmediately upstream from the VLL, a backlog table is controlled via USNR’s MillTrak system, with a sensor mounted above the flow. gapping table with beltways • A initiates the gap between boards. • N ext is the skew correction table #1, where each of the beltways is independently driven to facilitate skew correction. kew correction tables #2 and 3 • S also utilize independently driven beltways to complete skew correction. • F inally the phasing table sequences the boards to the speed of the lugged transfer, while feeding them into the lugs. • A second MillTrak sensor is mounted above the VLL to control the beltways for gapping, skew correction and phasing actuations. Operation Focus – USNR
Achieving grade satisfaction
USNR’s LHG project yields more on-grade, while at the same time delivering less trim loss
T
he Wilkins family operates two mills in the Pacific Northwest region of the US, and wanted to modernize their grading lines. Dissatisfied with their existing grading systems, they scoured the industry for a solution. The result is a unique arrangement that is more than satisfying their requirements. The Wilkins family has been in the sawmill business for more than 50 years. It owns and operates two sawmills; Wilkins, Kaiser & Olsen (WKO) at Carson, WA and Mt. Hood at Hood River, OR. The mills produce and sell lumber under the brand name High Cascade. Bill Wilkins, his brother Brad, and their father, Bill Wilkins Sr, own the business and are involved in the daily operations. Several years ago, WKO completed a major upgrade at its Carson facility, replacing a sharp chain and a slant carriage with a new USNR primary breakdown line. Then it turned its sights to refurbish its grading lines at both sites. The Carson facility processes Douglas fir and white fir, hemlock and pine, to produce high quality, kiln-dried dimension lumber into 2x4 to 2x6, 2x10, 2x12 and export sizes of 45x90mm and 90x90mm. Mt. Hood processes green Douglas fir into 2x4 to 2x6, and some 1x4
and 1x6 as recovery items. Supportability was a big issue with the old systems, and they were not up to par with what is available today. Several years ago the company installed lineal grade scanners in both mills. At the time these systems were popular, but ongoing support for these systems proved to be a substantial issue at WKO and Mt. Hood. The vendor for these systems had a lack of upgrade path in technology as well as time zone differential, and continued technical service that were all factors that eventually caused the company to look elsewhere for automated grading solutions. Mike Engel, Vice President for the company, noted: “Supportability was a big issue with the old systems, and they were not up to par with what is available today. “We looked at all the major suppliers of lineal grading systems but USNR’s LHG was the only one that provided the functionality we wanted.” He related that the company had confidence in USNR having done many previous projects together, and determined that the Lineal High Grader (LHG) would accomplish their goals.
36 International Forest Industries | AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2016
The new systems The predominant species the LHG is required to grade at these mills is Douglas fir, making up 65% of the production at Carson and 100% at Mt Hood. At Mt Hood the products are planed and graded green. Total production averages 480 mbf/day at Carson and 390 mbf/day at Mt. Hood on a one-shift basis. A unique aspect of these installations was the utilization of the existing feedworks. Mike explained that the feedworks were already in place and working, and they wanted to save the added
cost of replacing that portion of the systems. The mills received new LHG sensor frames on slidebases, then new and old components were aligned to integrate together. A new ID printer, ID readers, Grade Projectors and Grade Mark Readers were also supplied. Both mills received complete trimmer/sorter PLC upgrades, and both sites implemented USNR’s WinTally sorter management system.

pass through the LHG’s sensor unit. The first sensor technology employed is x-ray, where the source and detector are mounted directly above and below the flow. Then four laser profile sensors and four vision sensors mounted in true differential configuration, scan the top, bottom and both sides of the boards as they travel lineally through the scan zone. As the boards exit the LHG they are sprayed with an invisible ID. A series of slowdown belts slow their speed before they are deposited onto a landing table. They are transported transversely to a Revolver lug loader where they are loaded into lugs. An ID reader identifies each board and the LHG’s grade and trim solution for that piece is projected down onto the board as it passes by the check grader. The check grader can see the optimizer’s grade solution as well as trim locations, and can pass the board or make a mark to up/down grade the piece, or adjust the trim locations. Next a grade mark reader reads any marks the check grader has made on the piece and sends that information to the optimizer to regenerate the solution. Then the PLC positions the fence paddle accordingly before the board is trimmed. Once trimmed the boards are dropped into sort bins according to their size and grade, and this is managed by the WinTally system.
Managing a mill’s products One major benefit for a mill is to have both WinTally and LHG,
providing the capability for these systems to work in tandem to manage the products the mill wants to produce (also available with USNR’s Transverse High Grader). At WKO and Mt Hood, the systems grade all products for the highest value grades possible from the raw material. An alternative process available with this combination, mill personnel can enter product specifications and quantities to the WinTally for products they need to fill orders. Then when the quantity of that product has been produced and the lumber is dropped into bins, the WinTally communicates this to the LHG, and LHG will no longer call for grades or trims for those products. Instead it moves on to make the next most valuable products the mill has specified. We make a large number of products – sometimes all within one day. Our mill manager appreciates the ease this system provides for managing this variety of products. These features are invaluable for mills like Carson where there are a lot of product variables to keep track of. Mike reiterated: “We make a large number of products in the planer mill; between narrows and wides, domestic and export, and four different species – sometimes all within one day. Our mill manager appreciates the ease this system provides for managing this variety of products.”
LHG firsts This is the first installation for the LHG under a newly released software platform (Carson), as well as the first installation grading green Douglas fir (Mt Hood). The Carson installation was the first stage of the project, and was the proving ground for the LHG’s ability with this software, subsequently
Grades and trim locations are clearly visible, and track along with the board as it moves on the transfer used at Mt. Hood as well. Douglas fir is particularly challenging to grade because of the wide range of colours from heart wood, which can be quite brown, to sap wood, which is much lighter. As one imagines, knots are much harder to detect in heart wood because their colour is often very similar to the surrounding fiber. Add to that the requirement for the LHG to grade green lumber, where moisture in the wood can cause issues with x-ray and tracheid data. That’s where LHG’s DataFusion concept really performs and proves its value, by utilizing several technologies to compare and confirm the data. Mike Engel commented: “Product tuning was a challenge because we have the first system in a green Douglas fir mill (Mt Hood), but we had the same issue at Carson because there we are grading green 4x4 lumber as well.” The installation at Carson took longer than originally scheduled, but the second installation at Mt Hood went much more smoothly. Mike said: “Since we planned to do the projects back-to-back we were really well prepared for the first one, and even much better prepared for the second installation.”
Unique challenges
We looked at all the major suppliers of lineal grading systems but USNR’s LHG was the only one that provided the functionality we wanted Mike Engel, WKO
SAWLINES
Besides the requirement for the LHG to grade green lumber at Mt Hood, an additional challenge was the way in which the mill manages its process. Mike Engel explained: “At Mt Hood we go from 2x4 to 2x6 by shifting a sidehead at the planer;
we do a changeover from one product to another in about 35 seconds. The LHG is tasked to changeover its product parameters from 2x4 to 2x6 in under 30 seconds.” The LHG is tasked to changeover its product parameters from 2x4 to 2x6 in under 30 seconds. Typically when a planer mill changes from processing one product to another, it means shutting down the whole line from the tilt hoist through to the stacker. This allows ample time for the LHG system to be reconfigured for the new product size. Because Mt Hood does not dry its lumber the planer is located directly downstream of the sawmill. The 3 products the mill sorts before the planer – 2x4 shorts, 2x4 longs and 2x6 – exit the sawmill onto three long transfers where they are staged for planing. The planer operator must keep space ahead of each product on the transfers, so product size changeovers happen frequently during each shift. Because of this quick changeover requirement, USNR engineers coded an additional feature into the Mt. Hood system. It takes the planer man a little over 30 seconds to adjust the planer side heads, and he also has a switch on his console to tell the PLC and, in turn, the LHG, that he is switching product sizes. When the switch is activated the LHG computer automatically resets itself to the new product parameters, and the LHG actuates a linear positioner attached to one of the side vision sensor mounts

A new LHG sensor frame on its slidebase is aligned with the feedworks from the previous vendor’s system that the mill chose to reuse to shift the sensor into the new position. The other side vision sensor, aligned with the linebar, remains fixed. This all takes place in under 30 seconds, and the LHG is ready to begin grading the new product. The improvements that we have seen, the ability to control what we are doing, and support for the system is unparalleled from what we had before.
More on-grade, less trim loss Mike shared some of the results the mills are achieving. “The improvements that we have seen, the ability to control what we are doing, and support for the system is unparalleled from what we had before,” he explained. “We improved our on-grade percentages and decreased our trim loss, and we have much better control over what our grading system is doing. We have been able to increase our scanning run speeds on some products that were finicky with our old system. “We have removed one grader from each line at both mills, and that is a cost saving in labour.” Mike also explained some of the issues that the mills had with the previous systems that were resolved with the implementation of the LHGs. “There were certain aspects of the old system, where it would not let the grader upgrade a board. If the scanner detected something that wasn’t really there, there was no way for the grader to correct the grade. Because of this we were forced to loosen our parameters and then ended up having to
downgrade a lot of boards to be on grade. With the LHGs the check graders are able to downgrade or upgrade products at will.” Mike gives credit to the mills’ teams at Carson and Mt Hood for the success of these projects. Paul Anderson managed the mechanical aspects of both projects, while Don Jarrell managed the electrical and controls. Todd Slack, mill manager at Carson, was hands-on through the first installation and start-up ensuring the LHG was performing as expected. Robert Fletcher, mill manager at Mt Hood was also hands-on through that mill’s project. The USNR project team included Nadim Karmali, project manager; Richard Herring, Ron Godin, Thomas Knotts and Bill Hilland, optimization technicians; Ken Lomness and Jared Plowman, controls technicians; Ray Winquist, John Schulte and Garth Turner, mechanical technicians. Mill electricians, millwrights and management all received training on the new systems, while one of their technicians received five days of direct one-on-one training instruction.
Shortly WKO will be starting its second sorter/stacker line at the sawmill to increase its capacity to over 200 LPM. And at Mt. Hood, now that the grading line isn’t a bottleneck the goal will be to increase throughput at the planer.
Next generation LHG software: a common grading platform Among the challenges with this project for USNR, this was the first installation for the LHG operating on a new software platform. Now it shares common defect analysis with other USNR grading optimization systems – Transverse High Grader (THG) for dry mill grading and sawmill BioVision for green mill grading. With the success we’ve achieved with the
transverse applications USNR was confident it was the right time to transition the LHG software. Historically LHG operated on its own platform because at the time it was developed, grade scanning and vision technology were new to the industry. LHG’s use of x-ray technology for knot detection was not practical for transverse applications (THG and BioVision) so a new methodology was developed. When USNR applied this methodology to the LHG we discovered that, combined with the x-ray data it was even more powerful for knot sizing. Nadim Karmali, USNR’s planer mill automated grading project manager, explains: “With the legacy LHG software we were reliant on x-ray data for knot assembly and pith location recognition. The new software was designed for transverse grade scanning. We developed a new pith model to help determine the connectivity of knot clusters, and this has proven to be very effective. With the new software release for the LHG we are using this same model in addition to the x-ray data that helps to identify knots by the density of the fibre. “The combination of technologies we are using today, combined with the DataFusion concept, is extremely accurate as the systems at Carson and Mt. Hood are proving out.”
Looking ahead These projects have resolved the challenges that these mills faced and positioned the company for the next stage in its evolution. Now with the desired capacity available in the breakdown lines at Carson, and with the grading area at the planer mill resolved, the next area of focus is sorting and stacking the abundance of products in the sawmill.

Move it to chew it Getting shredding and grinding units to site and between multiple sites has been made easier, according to International Forest Industries’ annual review of shredding and grinding technology

espite the fact size reduction is a business unto itself, shredding and grinding remains very much a secondary activity in the forestry world following the primary felling and clearing activities. As such, it is up to those responsible for size reduction to visit multiple primary sites to generate value from what primary industry practitioners may consider waste material. And so it follows that the ability of contractors to move easily and quickly between sites can add between 10-15% to productivity over a year, depending on who you ask. This year’s review of shredding and grinding technology highlights this crucial aspect of the size reduction industry and contractors will be pleased to read that manufacturers have been conscious to continue to make improvements in the size and manoeuvrability of units so as to improve the amount of time the machine spends chewing material and reduce the time spent travelling. Other key elements to look out for in this year’s review include an overall upgrade to under-friendliness and continued steps forward in engine design for greater power and efficiency, while remaining emission-regulation compliant. To begin with, we take a look at the HG6000TX, which is now faster across the ground.
The Vermeer HG6000TX is powered by a 755 horsepower (563 kW) Caterpillar C18 Tier 4 final engine. The HG6000TX is equipped with
26 in (66 cm) double grouser track pads to help reduce ground pressure. The suspension provides 7 in (17.8 cm) of ground clearance under the track undercarriage, making it ideal for tough-to-reach jobsites and uneven terrain. With a ground speed of up to 2.6 m/h (4.2 km/h), the HG6000TX can move faster from jobsite to jobsite to help it keep pace with loading equipment. The SmartFeed feed system automatically controls grinding speed based on engine RPM levels, and the hydraulic feed roller keeps material moving to maximize loading speed and productivity. With reversible hammers and tips, the patented Series II duplex drum system simplifies maintenance and nearly doubles the wear life compared to single-sided designs. The HG6000TX features a thrown object deflector, which reduces the quantity and distance of thrown debris to help enhance jobsite safety. A single-piece discharge conveyor belt allows for better flow of material from belly to load-out to prevent bottlenecks. To transport the machine, the operator can track a grinder onto the new dolly system using a wireless remote control unit from up to 300 ft (91.4 m). Remote operation allows the operator to engage tracks for onsite manoeuvrability and view and change a variety of settings during operation, while monitoring various engine parameters from inside the loader cab or in a remote location. The new dolly transport system eliminates the need for a conventional truck trailer – such as a drop deck – greatly reducing operating costs and enhancing manoeuvrability.

A DW 3060 type F single-shaft shredder generates material largely free of undesirable fine fractions. Further benefits of the machine included its excellent reliability, due to its 100% mechanical drive, good contamination resistance, low operating costs and simple maintenance processes. The counter blade can be replaced safely and conveniently outside the machine and the complete tooth bar can be removed from the shredding comb entirely without the need for tools. The new “Limiter” is also an optional fine shredding system for the shredder, which holds back a large proportion of the unshredded or insufficiently shredded wood that made it through the automatic 44 International Forest Industries |

contaminant sorting process in the shredding process until it is sufficiently shredded. Thanks to its gimbal-mounted, suspended components, the Limiter easily avoids three-dimensional foreign bodies, ensuring that contamination resistance is now also maintained with fine shredding, as with the other Doppstadt shredding systems. Doppstadt equips the shredder with a “Selector” option for work that requires a defined end product completely free of oversized fractions. This downstream close-mesh grain screen works fully without a separate drive and returns the oversized material along a conveyor for re-shredding to meet the precisely defined specification. This cyclical process, which optimizes the product, results in a high-quality end product with a uniform fraction

Ideal for contaminated material too The Dopp-Lock™ quick-change system makes it far easier to replace the shredding tool. The free-swinging Dopp-Lock™ shredding tools can be replaced within minutes, regardless of whether the tools need replacing because they are worn or because the input material places different demands on the machine. When combined with the new “Long Life” impact plate, these tools also guarantee a longer service life, even if processing contaminated input material. The new mobile machines replace Doppstadt’s AK 510 and AK 535 series. According to Thomas Diekmann: “Our new technology has produced universal shredders that incorporate all the benefits of their predecessor models, whilst at the same time being more fuel-efficient, high-

Cleaner, greener and more efficient Morbark grinders are available with either diesel or electric-powered motors. For stationary applications, electric-powered equipment can help reduce emissions, noise levels, and fuel and operational costs. Plus, electric equipment does all this while maintaining similar performance and output to diesel-powered equipment, according to Morbark. Morbark has designed and built electric-powered systems for more than 50 years for customers with diverse needs and applications. For all electric-powered equipment, Morbark has an advanced electrical testing area within the factory. Its massive electrical machine test panel allows the company to take each piece of electric-powered equipment, test-run it at full RPM and do
the necessary pressure checks, verifying the settings through results – not just inspections – and conduct a comprehensive test of all systems.
Morbark HT1042 Slow-Speed Shredder Morbark recently introduced the HT1042, an aggressive, versatile slow-speed, high-torque shredder, which can be used to pre-shred or make the required end product size. Designed as a universal machine for the reduction of mixed materials — such as wood and green waste, C&D waste, tyres, railroad ties, plastic and more — it features a single-rotor design, adjustable anvil and removable grate system, allowing the contractor to quickly change machine set-up based on material to be processed and desired end product.

Terex Environmental Equipment’s TBG 650 Horizontal Grinder, a CBI Legacy Series machine originally known as the Magnum Force 5800BT, is one of TEE’s signature grinders and has cemented itself as a popular choice among end users across the world – and for good reason. Designed with similar concepts to TEE’s flagship grinder, the TBG 680, the TBG 650 is built for contractors dealing with lower product needs or transport restrictions. Feed components such as pulleys, conveyor chains and drive motors are identical to the TBG 680 to ensure it grinds a log no matter what its size. Unlike other grinders in today’s market, the TBG 650 is designed as a compact unit that relieves the headaches for end users traveling from job to job. The machine’s overall width of 8’ – 6” and weight of 63,000 – 69,000 lbs. gives it the size constraints necessary for minimum load restrictions and permitting. The grinder is ideal for land clearing companies, mulch yards and demolition wood processors. It is expected

to be available for demonstration at the 2016 Demo International Equipment Show in Maple Ridge, BC. The TBG650, like other tracked and wheeled CBI Legacy grinders, is manufactured out of TEE’s Newton, NH production facility. Powered by a Caterpillar C-18, 765 hp (570 kW) diesel engine with Tier 4 features, it is a heavy-duty power unit that meets the highest of emission regulations. It features a 40” diameter x 48”wide (1,016 mm

x 1,219 mm) upturn, steel-forged drum rotor. The rotor features CBI’s proven design that benefits fuel economy and production rates thanks to its offset helix design that carries 20 hammers. The TBG 650’s drum rotor includes electronic sensors to alert the machine’s control system to reverse the feed wheel and infeed chains. If any metal happens to sneak through, the sacrificial tips on the strikers and shear pins on the grate serve as engineered-in
weak points to concentrate the damage to low-cost components. This results in decreased downtime and money saved in part replacements. The clamshell hog box opening provides machine servicemen more room behind the screens for increased throughput and ease of maintenance. If screens must be replaced, the opening offers a direct line to lift and remove the existing screens. A simple push of a button retracts the hog box’s two
main locking pins and a second button activates two hydraulic cylinders that lift the entire upper section to a vertical position. To ensure complete customer protection, there is a two-grate system with both top and bottom screens that include shear pin protection. The top screen can be bolted in or loose mounted if the unit is equipped with the optional quick release feature.
Slow Speed & Medium Speed Shredders The double-shaft shredders of the TDS 820 and TDS V20 are Terex’s latest models of mobile shredders. The TDS 820 is designed as a double-shaft slow speed shredder while the TDS V20 is a unique mobile concept combining a double-shaft medium speed shredding unit with end product sizing screens. Both machines are in full production out of TEE’s production facility in Dungannon, Northern Ireland. The shredders were available for viewing at the US compost Council’s 24th Annual Compost Show in Jacksonville, FL. Attendees witnessed the TDS V20 shredding palm trees while the TDS 820 shredded C&D waste. The TDS V20 has since made appearances at IFAT and Bauma in Munich, Germany.
The TDS V20 is an industryfirst within the mobile shredding sector and highlights TEE’s desire to manufacture machines which are being demanded for by presentday customers. Static shredder manufacturer Vecoplan has worked in partnership with TEE to produce this mobile machine that is capable of shredding wood waste, green waste, domestic and industrial waste and is particularly suited to producing SRF. Like the TDS 820, its twin shredding shafts are 78” in length but is 24” in diameter (630 mm x 2,000 mm). –Its medium speed shafts operate up to 160 RPM and have precision machined bolt-on cutting teeth. Its screen system, available in different sizes, is complete with an intelligent protection system,
allowing a desired particle size to be produced, whilst processing foreign objects. This mobile shredder produces a controlled product size in one pass, whilst generating minimal fines content. The machine is available with two diesel engine types: Scania DC13 Tier 4 final (368 kW/493 hp) (US and EU) or a Scania DC13 Tier 3 (371 kW/497 hp) (EU & ROW). The TDS 820’s independent high-torque shafts eliminate wrappage and allow the machine to shred raw material including household waste, bulky waste, commercial waste, used tires, green waste and wood waste. A hydrostatic drive and fully welded tooth configuration offer operators unrivaled protected against contaminants whilst
giving impressive throughput and excellent material reduction. If the twin shafts encounter any material blockage, the machine operator can control each shaft with a remote control. To prevent material ingress, each shaft bearing is automatically lubed, which also improves the service life of the double-shaft setup. The twin shafts operate between 0-40 RPM and measure 27.5” in diameter and 78” in length (700 mm x 2,000 mm). Depending upon geographical emission regulations, it is powered by a Scania DC13 331 kW (440 hp) Tier 4 Final (US & EU) or a Scania DC13 371 kW (497 hp) Constant Speed (EU & ROW).

SHREDDERS & GRINDERS
Considerably simplified maintenance and feed-in, optimised draw-in behaviour and extremely high throughput - these are the keywords JENZ is using to advertise its new BA 915 D biomass processor. The machine has been fitted with many innovative detailed solutions, and was presented to the public at the IFAT for the first time. In comparison, woodchippings have proven themselves as an absolutely competitive energy source over the years. However, reducing oil prizes and the mild winter have caused a difficult market situation at the moment.
Low-quality garden and park waste is therefore used for composting more often than not, and JENZ has now developed the BA 915 D for precisely this purpose. The new shredder has not only been designed for composting, it can be optimally used for substrate preparation. In a similar manner to composting, input material must be fragmentised for biogas facilities so that it can be stirred more
easily and promote gas formation. Irrespective of which application, any machine used must be extremely high-powered and, at the same time, exceptionally mobile. These were the core requirements on the new BA 915 D. In detail this means that there is an overall weight of less than 19 t in the full version with metal separation and an overall vehicle length of less than 18.75 m. This
means that the BA 915 D can be towed by a 3-axis HGV which can still carry a wheeled loader at the same time. Apart from this, any type of special permit or certificate of exemption is avoided in the ideal case. In order to implement quicker coupling and uncoupling processes, the BA 915 D is fitted with a hydraulic support winch and is ready for transport within the shortest-possible time.

In addition to mobility, the JENZ designers paid special attention to the machine’s userfriendliness. The low belt hopper infeed height of only 2 m makes feed-in easier and reduces the duration of the wheeled loader lifting process, which is directly reflected in a lower energy input and quicker loading cycles. The free loading length of 4.40 m, which can optionally be extended
SHREDDERS & GRINDERS to 5 m using a hydraulically-folding hopper, considerably simplifies the feed-in process when using a wheeled loader or excavator. The machine is comfortably moved using the hydraulic propulsion drive, which is a standard feature together with the 25-channel radio remote control. The maintenance access has been completely redesigned. The important thing is that the wear parts can be changed in a comfortable, upright position. Unlike in the past, the machine operator no longer has to climb onto the conveyor belt to replace wear parts. The outfeed belt is now comfortably swivelled to the side at the push of a button like a heavy safe door so that access to the rotor can be carried out without obstacles. Of course it is also possible to drive directly up to the rotor using a forklift or a wheeled loader so that heavy wear parts can be fitted from these machines. An air compressor, which is fitted directly to the engine, is a standard fitting for replacing wear parts. The machine has a sufficientlydimensioned air-operated power wrench for this purpose, and this is a standard on-board tool as is the fitted hose reel. The on-board tools also include an air gun so that the driver can carry out cleaning work on site. The screen basket has been designed to match this feature. The individual elements have been designed in terms of weight so that the driver can lift parts out of the machine without requiring assistance. Individual segments are safely fitted to the outfeed shaft for transport. This means that the driver always has two screen baskets available and can react quickly if the material changes or customer requirements are different. A real highlight on the machine is the newlydesigned outfeed belt. This makes a drop height of 4400 mm possible, which means that even high walking-floor HGVs can be loaded directly. The outfeed belt has been fitted with an underride guard as standard and is moved into the working position by remote control at the push of a button. Covering the throw zone means that cleaning work is almost completely unnecessary, which means that the machine can be converted from the working to the transport position in the shortest possible time. This advantage is of particular interest if a lot of work is carried out at small locations with frequent job site changes. To ensure the high power potential, the BA 915 D has been provided with a high-powered Mercedes-Benz OM 471 LA engine of 530 hp and a torque of 2460 Nm. The engine can convert its high torque completely into fragmentised material in connection with the draw-in opening of around 900 mm. The Eco and Power torque ranges are available for operation. Due to the high torque, the Eco range is sufficient for most applications, Power operation is mainly used for even finer fragmentising due to the high tool rotary speed.
The Beast from Bandit Industries continues to evolve. These horizontal grinders are used extensively by municipalities, sawmills, logging professionals, land clearing contractors and waste management organizations for converting waste wood into a high-quality mulch or a screened chip for biomass markets. In 2013, Bandit christened The Beast XPSeries with sweeping enhancements – 35 in all that included upgrades to the feed system, augers, grinding chamber, infeed, fuel tank and wear parts. That evolution continues with recent enhancements aimed at further increasing the
efficiency, durability and production of The Beast. Among these enhancements are new flangetype augers, providing easier access while simplifying the changing procedure. The gate size on the Models 2680XP and 3680XP is now larger, providing an overall increase of 23% for the screening area. A new proportional drive option for The Beast is also available. This feature automatically adjusts the feed speed to the load that the engine is experiencing. When slowing the speed, The Beast will produce a finer product. If a consistent product is desired, the proportional drive can be switched to the auto-feed mode, where the feed speed of the conveyor will match the mill and maintain the desired product size.

The Beast can be equipped with a 30-tooth cuttermill that is extremely effective in processing smaller green waste material such as coastal vegetation, vines, brush, landscape prunings and grass
The discharge speed on the on the 2680XP and 3680XP is increased to a maximum of 775 ft/minute to accommodate the added throughput resulting from the new six-speed infeed conveyor system
Should material flow overload the mill, the auto feed will back the material from the cut until the power recovers. A two-stage discharge conveyor is also available on the 2680XP and 3680XP. The discharge speed is increased to a maximum of 775 ft/ minute to accommodate the added throughput resulting from the new six-speed infeed conveyor system. Infeed rates can be adjusted from 10-60 ft/minute. These enhancements make The Beast’s with its 60-tooth cuttermill much more efficient. Most grinders have a mill that turns in an upward motion, hammering the material. The Beast cuttermill turns in a downward motion, utilizing an assortment of teeth to cut and split material for making top quality mulch. Chipping knives can also be installed to produce a range of uniform chip sizes for biomass or fuel wood markets. 56 International Forest Industries |
Break away cutterbodies with rakers regulate the cut while protecting the mill from foreign objects that enter the mill housing. The result is a higher quality endproduct that is produced quicker, saving both time and money with better machine efficiency and less wear-and-tear. In addition to the standard cuttermill, The Beast can be equipped with a 30-tooth cuttermill that is extremely effective in processing smaller green waste material such as coastal vegetation, vines, brush, landscape prunings and grass. The 30-tooth cuttermill and faster infeed/ discharge speeds will increase production by as much as 50% in many applications. For companies looking to chip material for fuel wood markets, dedicated chipping drums are also available for The Beast. These drums can be configured to

produce screened chips ranging in size from ¼ in to 2 in, allowing owners of The Beast to serve multiple biomass markets with a single machine. “They want us to make chips for them, for playground use,” explained Ron Rinell, owner of Bunyon Bros Tree Service headquartered in San Luis Obispo on California’s picturesque Central Coast. Rinell recently purchased a self-propelled Model 3680XP on tracks with the 30-tooth cuttermill. He’s using chipper knives on knife cutterbodies to produce specifically sized chips for a major US company specializing in playground material. Starting with whole trees, he makes the precise product his client needs in a single pass. And when other clients come calling for mulch, swapping the knives for cutting or grinding teeth is barely a 15 minute operation on the 30-tooth cuttermill. “We are their source to make chips with The Beast to distribute throughout California,” said Rinell. “They want to purchase 20,000 to 30,000 yards right now, and it’s a really good, specific chip they need. This project alone was good justification to purchase The Beast because this contract would finance the machine, never mind all the clearing projects I had to turn away. “We have new screens and baffles going into The Beast to make the certified chip they need, and Bandit has really helped us with the configuration for The Beast to make just the right product.” Available as towable, selfpropelled track or electric units with literally hundreds of options, The Beast can be configured to excel in virtually any wood processing application. From mulch to chips, Bandit Industries and The Beast help build the bottom line for companies around the world.

PURPOSE BUILT FORESTRY MACHINES
Swing when you’re winning It’s been a booming 12 months for swing machine manufacturers, if International Forest Industries’ annual review of purpose-built forestry machines is any indication
F
orestry is not a fast moving sector. It is a sophisticated industry that aggregates multiple techniques and technologies but it does not happen overnight. It is justifiable, we then feel, to get a little excited about a series of new developments. This is what we have seen in the swing machine or purpose-built forestry machine sector, with advancements in knuckleboom loaders and roadside processing units, in particular. John Deere has delivered on its 337E Knuckleboom Loader, which it says takes another step forward in durability, high swing torque and boom strength. The manufacturer has also launched its G series of swing machines, which it believes the market will be equally impressed with. Tigercat continues to build on its reputation for durability and capacity, while Cat has emphasised the versatility of both its full range

of swing machines and that of individual units, which can be used in timber harvesting and processing, shovel logging, stump removal, road building, and more in addition to performing log handling and loading tasks. And finally, the Komatsu PC210LL-10, PC240LL-10 and PC390LL-10 purpose-built machines have established a rugged and proven platforms in forestry applications, handling a wide range of jobs. First, it’s the latest from John Deere.
John Deere has unveiled the latest addition to its line of fulltree forestry solutions, the 337E Knuckleboom Loader. Building upon the reputation of John Deere knuckleboom loaders, known for

their durability, high swing torque and exceptional boom strength, the 337E model incorporates proven solutions to offer a reliable, productive machine for loggers. A key upgrade in the 337E Knuckleboom Loader is the incorporation of the reliable hydraulic system used in the 437E models. This proven system offers loggers the peace of mind that their machine has been thoroughly tested in a variety of applications. Additionally, the hydraulic system reduces fuel consumption compared to the previous small knuckleboom loader model. “We continue to expand our portfolio of machines, creating solutions that improve uptime, efficiency and performance. The introduction of our E-Series knuckleboom loaders offers yet another step forward for our customers with full-tree logging operations,” said Brandon O’Neal, product marketing manager, John
Deere Construction & Forestry. “Our 337E Knuckleboom Loaders are equipped with components and systems that have been adopted from other model machines and tested in a variety of applications, giving us great confidence in the reliability and productivity they provide to our customers.” Like the larger 437E models, the 337E machines are equipped with several improvements to increase operator productivity. The 337E boasts a five percent increase in both swing torque and boom lift over previous models, reducing delimbing and truck loading times. For loggers, any downtime results in a loss of revenue. The 337E boasts a 173 horsepower Final Tier 4 engine that uses the same after-treatment perfected in the 700K forestry crawler dozers, providing the reassurance of a proven system. Serviceability is also improved
FORESTRY MACHINES The John Deere 337E builds on the reputation established by the previous generation of Knuckleboom Loaders
on the 337E machines. The ground-level oil drain and filter changes make hydraulic oil and filter maintenance faster and safer, enabling operators to spend more time up and running. An optional electric refill pump simplifies service even further. A smaller, 35 gallon hydraulic oil reservoir reduces the cost of changing hydraulic oil by 44%. Other improvements include an easy-install citizens band radio and an updated electrical system. Integrated circuit boards replace
the fuse panel and relay board, eliminating relays and dramatically reducing the amount of wiring and connections in the circuit board area. The 337E comes standard with the JDLink machine monitoring system and remote diagnostics as part of John Deere ForestSight. ForestSight is a package of customer-driven technology solutions that bring the machine, the job site and the John Deere dealer together to help loggers better manage their equipment and operations. Meanwhile, the new John Deere G-Series swing machines have “set a new standard in the swing machine market”, according to the manufacturer. Eight powerful swing machine models, 2154G, 2156G, 2654G, 2656G, 3154G, 3156G, 3754G and 3756G, provide operators with increases in productivity, durability and reliability. The G-Series machines are designed to enable loggers to efficiently perform the toughest of jobs, tackling everything from loading to processing big wood. The G-Series swing machines consist of two machine types – log loaders and forestry excavators. The log loaders are distinguished by the 56 model number, while the forestry excavators retain the 54 designation. All of the models have been equipped with features to meet loggers’ needs – from improved cabs, increasing operator productivity and comfort, to a more durable design to ensure machine reliability and performance. The G-Series machines set the bar high
The 337E has a powerful tier 4-compliant engine for the forestry market, offering loggers the machines they need to be more productive and profitable.
<subhead> Improved cab design Understanding that operator comfort is a vital to increasing productivity, the John Deere G-Series swing machines feature a redesigned operator station. Operators immediately notice that the cab is much larger and quieter than the predecessors, allowing loggers to work more comfortably and efficiently. The climate-controlled cabs are equipped with ergonomic controls, excellent window clarity and isolation mounting, boosting operator productivity from sun up to sun down. The forestry excavators, 2154G, 2654G, 3154G and 3754G, are equipped with a side entry cab, while the log loaders, 2156G, 2656G, 3156G and 3756G, models feature an elevated rear-entry cab. The rear-entry cab improves safety and allows for an easier entry and exit. Additionally, floor-mounted windows increase visibility to the tracks to help maneuver over difficult terrain. A new cab-forward option on the 2156G, 2656G and 3156G log loader models boosts operator confidence, particularly when swinging toward the boom

side of the cab. New LED lighting options, including service and access lights, on all models expand the lighted area with crisp, clear lighting for improved visibility and safety on the jobsite.
Better performance In order to provide operators with better performance, the 3154G and 3156G machines are equipped with a powerful 9 litre engine and the main hydraulic pump used in the 3754G and 3756G machines, significantly improving machine multifunctioning, reliability and durability in big wood applications. Additionally, the longer track option on 2654G, 2656G, 3754G and 3756G improves machine stability, increasing operator comfort and boosting machine lift capacity.
More durable design The G-Series machines also offer significant undercarriage improvements. The 2154G, 2156G, 3154G and 3156G models have been updated with larger lower rollers. The optional LC track frames available on the 2654G, 2656G, 3754G and 3756G models now feature one additional roller, lengthening the undercarriage, helping to extend lower roller life. John Deere has also made improvements to the boom, arm, mainframe and undercarriage, increasing the life of the structures. With the addition of the integrated hydraulic plumbing for the Waratah processing heads on the 3756G, loggers can now purchase a factoryinstalled solution across several models, including the 2154G, 2654G, 3156G and 3756G. These integrated solutions increase the

The Cat 568 FM, is equipped with the 319 hp (238 kW) C9.3 engine mount knuckleboom loaders are known for their high swing torque, swing speed, and lift capacity that reduce cycle times. They are fast, smooth, and designed and built for high production while being economical on fuel. Heavy-duty design and construction make them the right choice for high production, high cycle operations, tough, pullthrough delimbing, and handling big hardwoods. Cat C Series knuckleboom loaders have excellent lift capacity throughout the full range of motion of the boom and at full reach. Main booms are constructed in a box design with thick walls and strong welds, and pin points are cast, which is stronger and lighter than fabricating. Steel tube hydraulic lines provide extended life and dissipate heat. Three operating modes give loggers the flexibility to manage machine hydraulics and fuel consumption, depending on the application. Lift and swing torque is the same in all modes. The Economy Mode provides the most fuel economy, the Run Mode is an intermediate mode, and the Power Mode provides optimum speed. An automatic engine idle down feature reduces fuel consumption during periods of inactivity.

Keeping it real Skidders
One of the most notable differences on the L-Series skidders is the completely redesigned cab
It’s a focus on power, efficiency and durability from three major skidder manufacturers, all looking to snare extra market share

I
t’s all about variety and durability for skidder manufacturers in this year’s International Forest Industries review of skidding technology. This is hardly surprising given the workload these units are required to handle. More-so than any other unit, the skidder is the work horse of the forest, required load and lug timber from the stand to the roadside and, generally speaking, the more capacity the better, though there’s a great emphasis on manoeuvrability for obvious reasons. That said, this doesn’t mean there is no room for technology and finesse – far from it. The key for Cat this year been a general overall increase

in efficiency with an eye on keeping operating costs at a minimum. It has also this year introduced what it describes as a “revolutionary” seat suspension system, which is great news for operators. Tigercat meanwhile has built on its reputation for making hardy, reliable and durable units and skidders in particular. The manufacturer has again upgraded the frames, further enhanced protection around hydraulic cylinders, and bolstered the already sturdy centre section. And finally, John Deere has received reports from the forest on the recent release of its L-Series skidders, which has been designed with a larger, roomier cab
and increased stability for operating on difficult terrain. The vital robustness has not been neglected and the manufacturer boasts of a larger, stronger grapple. According to John Deere, many operators regard the L-Series skidder they’ve bought as having made a major and profitable change to operations. Here is the latest in the appropriate detail.
Over a year ago, John Deere introduced its “gamechanging” L-Series skidders to
quickly. I just can’t say enough about how it’s turned around our operation,” commented Mitch McGill, McGill Timber. Operator comfort One of the most notable differences on the L-Series skidders is the completely redesigned cab, equipped to increase operator comfort during long days on the job. The best-in-class cab is 25% roomier and more than 50% quieter than the predecessors. “The cabs are bigger and comfortable. My operators can’t believe how quiet they are,” noted Buddy Lominick, Big Pine Logging. A more efficient HVAC system and more ergonomic controls are other fatigue beating comforts that help loggers’ power through long
days. A rotating seat with joystick steering helps reduce strain on the back and neck. As described by Dustin Clauson, Clauson Logging: “The controls are effortless and joystick steering really helps reduce fatigue over a long shift.” Smooth operation, rugged durability The L-Series machines are equipped with the easy-to-use Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), a hydrostatically assisted mechanical transmission that automatically adjusts the output torque, delivering maximum power to the ground without manually shifting gears. CVT eliminates sudden surges and engine overspeed, reducing component wear and

the forestry market. Designed for loggers by loggers, the L-Series machines were equipped with a slew of features to improve operator productivity and comfort. After many months on the market, operator feedback is rolling in about the John Deere skidders, with loggers raving about the improvements, the manufacturer reported to IFI. From the larger, roomier cab to the increased stability on difficult terrain and the larger, stronger grapple, loggers are noticing the changes and how the new machines are creating differences in their production. “Buying the skidder is probably the best decision I’ve made in terms of getting more wood to the landing more

extending engine life. “The CVT efficiently combines power, traction, and fuel consumption. You have constant engine speed, so there’s no messing around with shifting,” said Frank Krammes, Frank Krammes Timber Harvesting and Excavating. “At the end of the week you’ve saved money because of this amazing technology.” Another benefit of CVT is that the configurable speed ranges eliminate the need to hunt for the correct gear, shortening the learning curve for new operators, while helping experienced operators maximize productivity. Power and stability Designed to handle the most rugged of terrain, the L-Series skidders combine best-in-class horsepower and power-to weight ratio with constant engine speed, allowing for superb responsiveness and maximum efficiency. The improved machine balance optimizes pulling power and improves stability when climbing hills, even on difficult ground or while hauling bigger payloads. “The L-Series skidders 72 International Forest Industries |
are more stable on a hill. The weight distribution really keeps the machine balanced when climbing and hauling big loads,” said Peter Schmidt, Forest Trotter Contracting. Loggers have noticed the changes to the grapples, thoroughly impressed by the updates. “The grapple improvements are unreal. They’re bigger, tougher, and stronger,” said Schmidt. The grapples are larger – up to 22.3 ft2 on the 948L – giving loggers the flexibility to configure a skidder that best matches their operation. The redesigned arch and boom configuration improves the operator’s visibility of the grapple, allowing for easier and more efficient operation. When combining the bestin-class horsepower and power-to-weight ratio with the larger grapples on the L-Series skidders, customers are able to greatly reduce the number of drags to the landing. Rugged design The L-Series skidders are equipped with more robust heavy-duty axles, including a rugged Outboard-Extreme axle (standard on the 848L and
AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2016
948L, optional on the 748L) that sets the standard for reliability. The new pressurized continuous-lube system and independent axle filters further improve durability and extend life — up to 15,000 hours. Additionally, as a part of the new grapple design, the L-Series skidders feature box-style tongs for maximum strength and harder wear surfaces for longer life. The components are easy to access, simplifying service and improving uptime. The L-Series skidders are equipped with the John Deere ForestSight technology, an integrated technology suite that includes JDLink. JDLink provides fleet owners with the ability to monitor their machines, track machine health and numbers of hours, as well as any maintenance needs, regardless of their proximity to the jobsite. When working with a local John Deere dealer, JDLink allows the service department to quickly diagnose maintenance needs without being at the site, reducing maintenance costs and downtime.
Designed to meet their needs, loggers are noting the improvements in the L-Series skidders and how these machines are boosting their businesses. As described by Krammes: “The power and stability of the L-Series skidders are great. The axles and grapples are bigger and more robust. Deere really improved cab comfort. The visibility is outstanding. “Everything about it. It’s like a glove – it just fits.”
Cat D Series wheel skidders enable loggers to operate more profitably by getting to the landing faster, increasing production, and reducing operating costs. In addition, a “revolutionary” new seat suspension technology provides “unmatched comfort” for operators and helps improve the bottom line for logging contractors. Cat D Series skidders feature a six-speed transmission with more gears in the working zone, lock-up torque converter and independent front and

rear differentials for more pulling power and control, high-capacity cooling system and reversing fan, and highperformance hydraulics. The machines offer a roomy, quiet, and cool operator station and tilting cab for servicing. There are four models ranging in horsepower from the Cat 525D (203 hp, 151kW) to the Cat 555D (275 hp, 205kW). “Loggers have a more versatile machine that is highly effective in sensitive applications such as first thinnings while maintaining the stability for working in tough conditions,” said Matt McDonald, product specialist for Caterpillar Forest Products. While faster, more powerful and more versatile than its previous model, Cat D series skidders reduce operating costs to loggers. For example, fuel economy and total fluid efficiency is improved, and extended service intervals reduce maintenance. The Cat Advanced Ride Management (Cat ARM) seat suspension system, only recently announced
by Caterpillar, features a breakthrough technology. The semi-active suspension dampens vibration -- adjusting in real time to changing ground conditions -- and minimizes end stop events. The result is significantly and measurably improved operator comfort. The operator is stabilized and experiences a smoother ride, reducing fatigue. End stop events are
profit potential, particularly in the case of long skids, when return speed and cycle times are critical. Skid distances potentially can be extended, minimizing operating costs for the job site. Another benefit is that high-ply rated tires may be considered to potentially improve tire life while maintaining a smoother ride for the operator.

virtually eliminated, reducing accelerations the operator may be exposed to by up to 80%. Cat ARM allows operators to remain in the machine for longer periods of time. Increased utilization of the skidder increases revenue and
Cat D Series skidders are equipped with the Cat C7.1 ACERT engine. It delivers more power and more fuel economy while complying with both US EPA Tier 4 Final and EU Stage IV emission standards. The D Series also offers a Cat C7.1
ACERT engine that is equivalent to US EPA Tier 3 and EU Stage III emission standards. The high-capacity cooling system and on-demand, hydraulically driven reversing fan keep the engine running at proper operating temperature, optimizing performance, durability and fuel efficiency. The cross-flow configuration and compartmentalization of the engine and cooling system maximize efficiency and reduce debris collection. Cool ambient air is pulled in from the side – not from the engine compartment – and air is exhausted out the opposite side. The oversized fan spins only as fast as needed to maintain proper operating temperature, and it automatically reverses every 20 minutes to expel debris. Cat D Series skidders have a six-speed transmission with gears more evenly distributed in the working zone to maximize efficiency on any terrain and ground conditions. The torque converter enables a smooth start when the skidder has a heavy load. Then the

lock-up clutch automatically engages, and the transmission goes into direct drive for high efficiency hauling. In normal operation, all four wheels move independently. In poor ground conditions, the independent front and rear differential locks can be engaged separately for better pulling and manoeuvrability. The locks are hydraulically actuated and can be engaged on the go. A new hydraulic system gives Cat D Series skidders faster multifunctioning capability and greater lift capacity. “You can steer, back up and activate arch, boom and grapple functions at the same time,” said McDonald. “Cycle times are significantly faster, increasing productivity.” Hydraulic system pressure has been increased 15-23%, depending on the model and matched to boom length, to increase lift capacity. Increased rigidity of the lower frame gives extra support to the bottom guarding to prevent damage from stumps and rocks. The rear frame, which has to stand up to heavy, swinging and twisting
loads, features box-section construction. The 360° continuous rotation grapple features box-section construction and threaded grapple tong pins that maximize structural integrity. Tongs have replaceable wear tips and internal welding in high wear areas for greater grapple durability. The operator cab is roomy, quiet, and cool and provides great visibility. The standard seat swivels 30° to the right so the operator can see grappling and skidding. The grapple is controlled through the seat-mounted joystick, so the operator can have full control while resting his forearm on the armrest. A tilting cab with fieldproven tilting pins provides access to components. Bolt-on panels around the base of the cab and removable steps provide more access. All cooling system components are easily accessed. Cat D Series skidders are supported by a dealer network that will keep them up and running with parts availability, field services, state-of-the art diagnostic programs, remote monitoring, and much more.

Tigercat skidders are all powered by the fuel efficient and reliable Tigercat FPT N67 engine. Tier 4f and Tier 2 engine choices are available depending on regional emissions requirements. Best of all, Tigercat FPT engines are fully supported by Tigercat including spare parts, product support and warranty. Tigercat designed driveline advantage Tigercat’s unique hydrostatic drive system increases efficiency and performance while reducing operator fatigue. Tigercat skidders operate at variable engine rpm, automatically increasing engine speed when additional horsepower is demanded. Because full torque is available at any engine speed, breakout performance is significantly better than competing skidders. The result is reduced site disturbance, longer tire life and improved performance in soft or steep terrain.
Tigercat DW610E equipped with Palfinger crane working in the French Alps Tigercat’s exclusive EHS (efficient high speed drive) consists of two variable displacement hydrostatic motors as inputs to the Tigercat transfer case which drives the front and rear axles. When operating conditions demand high tractive effort, both motors are working. When tractive effort requirements are reduced -- for instance, when traveling empty
or loaded on flat terrain – all of the pump flow is directed to one motor for higher travel speeds. EHS provides fast travel speeds, extremely high tractive effort and excellent fuel efficiency. EHS is standard on the 610E and 615E and optional for the 620E, 625E and 630E skidders. Finally, Tigercat now designs and builds its own forestrygrade axles. This gives Tigercat the maximum amount of design control and allows for better commonality of spare parts across different machine models. Tigercat axles are built from the ground up for tough off road duty and come in a wide variety of configurations supporting single and dual tire installations to maximize performance in tough terrain. Turnaround The rotating Turnaround seat provides full rear-facing drive
capability and control of all machine functions. An armrestmounted joystick controls the steering function for improved ergonomics. The operator can drive comfortably with the full speed range available either bladeforward or grapple-forward while well anchored and aligned in the seat. Six-wheel skidders: 615E, 625E and 635E “Tigercat is the only manufacturer producing a six-wheel drive skidder that stands up to the most demanding applications,” the manufacturer claimed. Tigercat’s six-wheel skidders combine the Tigercat driveline with Tigercat designed and built bogies for high traction and low ground pressure. This is a big advantage in soft terrain, sensitive sites and swamp logging applications. They easily handle steep

attachments, made by FAE, can be switched easily and quickly, allowing you to use PT-475 for land clearing and mulching applications (right-of-way, utility lines, fire breaks, vegetation management, etc.), as well as for land conversion (removal of stumps and roots, site preparation) and for road construction/maintenance.
The front attachments, made by FAE, provide high quality operation and reliability defining also the versatility of the unit. PT-475 can indeed be equipped with a variety of front attachments such forestry mulchers, soil stabilizers/ subsoilers and rock crushers. Changing the attachment and thus adapting the carrier for different applications is easy and can be done quickly. With a relative small investment you can use the machine on different job sites because machines are not limited to one application. etween two pine crews, Hobart, Tasmania based B.R. & K.F. Muskett & Sons supply the Norske Skog Boyer mill with nearly a quarter of its weekly intake. Built in 1941 and originally owned by Australian Newsprint Mills Pty Ltd., it was the first mill in the southern hemisphere to make paper from eucalyptus fibre. It has only had three owners in its 75 year history. The Muskett’s – fourthgeneration loggers operating a 50-year-old family business – are closely tied to the mill. Tigercat Industries’ Between the Branches (BTB) caught up with Kevin Muskett and sons, Matthew and Andrew, last October where one of the pine crews was working

a radiata site and producing around 2 000 m3 (approximately 2,000 tns) per week with a Tigercat L830C feller buncher, an LH855C harvester and a 1075B forwarder. Kevin’s sons Matthew and Andrew operate the LH855C and L830C as well as being responsible for running the operation. They can maintain production with the three machine system if the piece size is greater than 1,5 tonne. “In poor timber we will bring in a second harvester,” explains Kevin. The company purchased the three Tigercat machines as a complete system, breaking away from the Komatsu gear that they have traditionally run. “The Tigercats are good machines and we get good support from Dave’s crew at Onetrak,” says Kevin. “We have an L870C buncher and an H855C harvester on the other pine operation,” Kevin adds. This crew is managed by Kevin’s brother
Geoffrey who doubles as the L870C operator. Geoffrey’s two sons also work on the crew. Nicholas is on the Tigercat H855C and Cassidy operates the loader. The company also runs two hardwood sites and twelve haul trucks. Geoffrey routinely deals with some highly challenging working conditions in the Florentine Valley in southwest Tasmania where limestone sinkholes litter the 30-year-old pine plantations. He works closely with the Forestry Practices Authority and Norske Skog who map and mark every sinkhole. Muskett & Sons was recognized in 2015 with an award for exemplary performance related to the sinkholes and shovel logging on steep slopes. Kevin continues listing family members. “My brother Robert supervises the workshop and my sister, Helen, manages the office and Brian and Kath are

and stability of the 1075B. “We are very happy with it,” confirms Kevin. Typically, the terrain is steep and rocky. “The LH855C does a bit of shovelling on steep ground,” explains Kevin. Although it slows the production rate for processing, it improves the efficiency and balance of the overall operation. “We track up the forwarder when it gets really steep.” And when it gets really, really steep, the L830C will fell for a yarder. Kevin says that Muskett & Sons just recently renewed the mill contract and Norske Skog seems
to be doing all the right things to guarantee future success in a state where the vast majority of the fibre is destined for export. The mill turns out two grades of newsprint as well as high quality glossy paper for magazines, which turned out to be a bit of a saviour. Kevin explains that Norske Skog completed the capital investment project two years ago. Faced with a shrinking market for newsprint in Australia, volatile Asian markets and a strong Australian dollar, the company spent $84 million (AUD) to convert one of the mill’s paper machines to

Hot logging The major challenge of the pine operations is that the wood can’t stand at roadside for more than two weeks. According to Kevin, the ability to meet just in time harvesting and delivery requirements is highly dependent on machine availability. “Reliability of the gear and planning is very important. The buncher can’t get very far ahead of the rest of the system or the wood will sit on the ground too long and we can’t stockpile at roadside for too long, so everything has to be working with a very high availability rate.” Kevin acknowledges that the Tigercat machinery is very productive. For instance, the company has never owned a forwarder with the lifting capacity

2013 John Deere 843K Feller buncher at Forestry First 05-02-13
This 2013 model Deere 843K is working in Pine Plantation. We filmed this cutter working on a second thinning job where the stems are 6 inches or so average, many less. This feller buncher is very impressive. The owner has been pleased with fuel consumption and the speed and power of this feller buncher is more than adequate in his thinning and logging operations. The operators are also making positive comments about the cab interior which has recently been much improved. The old steering column is gone and it opens everything up in terms of visibility and space for your legs. If you have not sat in one of these you should do yourself a favour and hop into one.

Doppstadt Expo 2015 - a Bird’s-eye View
50 years of Doppstadt: More than 5,000 guests from the environmental and recycling sector experienced two unforgettable days: on 24 and 25 June 2015. Environmental technology company Doppstadt staged what was arguably the largest European trade show of 2015 in this field on its 220,000 sq.-metre works site (Saxony-Anhalt). On show were over one hundred machines for the shredding, sorting and treatment of waste and biomass. What was unique thereby
was that more than half of the machines could be seen in action. In two-hour live demonstrations, the guests saw how coarse shredders, screening machines and exact hackers shredded tree trunks into sawdust, separated waste from recyclables and sorted pebbles from sand heaps. In doing so, Doppstadt demonstrated its problem-solving skills through combined processes: material collected by machines was initially shredded, then separated into its various components by means of separation processes such as screening, washing or air separation.

6-Deck Jet Veneer Dryer - time lapse construction
Murray Timber 4-sided canting log breakdown line
This new 6-deck jet veneer dryer, located at Martco, Chopin, LA, is the largest dryer to date in the southern yellow pine region. This dryer will accomplish the equivalent production of two dryers, reducing labor costs by one-half. At the same time it will reduce thermal energy consumption by 10%, and exhaust fugitive emissions by 15%.
This mill is located in Ireland.
The dryer was erected off-line, and once complete it was towed into place and connected to all services under a projected expedited schedule. This allowed Martco the advantage of choosing the optimum time to disrupt its production schedule to install the additional capacity, and allowed the plant to utilize the existing building structure to house the new dryer.

NEW PRODUCT
Log Max release the new 4000T harvesting head The Log Max 4000T is the second addition to the Log Max T-Series after the 3000T released earlier this year, a head many have been longing for. This head has an entirely new frame construction where the saw box has been moved backwards and outwards, the higher part of the frame inched forward reducing friction and clogging in the measuring wheel. The new hydraulics layout greatly improves power and feeding speed making this 833 kg harvesting head the obvious choice for thinning and thinning and lighter final cuts. This powerful thinning head comes equipped with the firstgeneration Log Max 218 and 318 True-Cut saw units with up to 58 cm of cut capacity. The Log Max 4000T, will certainly stand out amongst the competition. • 8 33 kg including rotator, feed rollers and damped protection plate. • new Log Max True-Cut 318 and
218 with 19 cc intelligent motor (with/without automatic chain tensioning). • 58 cm cut capacity with 67 cm saw bar • 0 ptimized saw box geometry and saw unit position that minimize the risk for splitting the log when cutting and reducing cutting time • n ew hose layout eliminating banjo couplings • 3 98 cc feed roller motors with over 2 tons of pulling force • increased feed speed to 5,0 m/s
An impressive new saw unit the Log Max True-Cut The Log Max 4000T and 3000T feature the first generation 318 True-Cut and 218 True-Cut, both saws have a 19cc motor, the 318 has automatic chain tensioning the 218 is without. The key component of the True-Cut system is the intelligent
saw motor with integrated valving solutions for saw motor speed and saw bar control. By continuously sensing the motor speed and adjusting the saw bar feed rate accordingly, the True-Cut maintains an almost constant chain speed of 40 m/s throughout the cutting cycle. This yields an impressive cutting performance - the TrueCut is up to 35 % faster than conventional saw units! By locating the valve for motor speed control inside the motor it is able to react instantly to changes in motor speed and practically eliminate any over-revving that is seen in a conventional saw unit.
Not only does this reduce the stress on the motor but it also provides a safer work environment by reducing the risk of chain shots. The True-Cut saw units also features a longer stroke cylinder and a higher resolution cutting control sensor. These additions provide for a more precise control of the saw bar resulting in maximized cutting performance and color marking precision. The True-Cut is optimized at the factory and should not need any further setting changes in the field.
