Fuelwood Factory is a combination of Woodcutta 400 and either Kindlet Pro or Splitta 400 to create a fully automated, radio controlled arrangement for converting timber lengths into split logs or kindling. Woodcutta 400 converts the timber into cut rings using a hydraulic chainsaw, then transfers them to the Kindlet Pro or Splitta option. The rings are converted to a split product of consistent sectional size, regardless of the ring diameter. The sectional size can be easily and quickly adjusted from log to kindling sizes. The product is then presented for bulk loading or for bagging into net bags. Working at optimum timber Ø 40cm the machine is capable of producing 13 solid m² per hour.

he BHL is a independent national body representing those working horses in forestry. In a sector as this, horses are the other end of the scale to the national trend. Small is beautiful. Horses provide the possibility of a very different type of forestry, a much more caring and gentle approach. Horses minimise ground damage and damage to the existing crop, allowing a very direct way of thinning for quality. Horses do not need access tracks and rides cut into a stand and can extract timber without any infrastructure. They leave the ground undamaged and uncompacted and allow the site to be replanted without the need of mounding.

extraction. They will be some of the BHL approved contractors, a list of people working professionally in forestry with horses. These contractors are spread out across the country and work on a very high level of expertise. The BHL also runs courses and membership events to spread the knowledge of this traditional skill of forestry. For a few years we now run Introductory courses in Horse Logging. This five day course is the potential way in for newcomers and may result in people taking up some form of a traineeship. People working in the industry will take on apprentices for a couple of weeks to up to a year to teach the basics in both forestry and horsemanship. With the support of our Charitable Trust we are trying to bring more people safely into this working environment, as there is certainly plenty of work out there.

When we can, we like to try the core products, such as the Rabaud mulcher and Auger Torque stump plainer prior to adding them to our range. By testing the products we are better placed to see how they work. We find the little techniques that only an operator would know and pass these onto our customers. For us it is all it’s all about finding what’s the best machine for our customers needs. With some brands we’re not able to try everything as their range is so big, however this is not the case with the TMK, we’ve tried everything they have; largely as
we have grown together as business’. TMK Tree Shears were developed to work in the most challenging conditions whilst being reliable and easy to use. Their creator was a frustrated owner of a forest that couldn’t find the right shear for his needs. He needed something small enough to not damage the surrounding trees, but strong enough to cut the bigger trees. What we now know to be the TMK 300 Tree Shear was created. The shears are made of Hardox Steel, the blade is thinner than competitor shears, it sinks into the trees with ease and because of its curve it has a firmer hold of the tree prior to cutting. To date the TMK 300 has been our greatest seller, its versatility appeals to a wide section of our client base, but we are beginning to see interest in the smaller TMK 200 and larger TMK 400 rise. Rabaud products for a little while and we are now beginning to see a rise in their sales too, their machines are able to complement the TMK range. The mulcher is able to clear vegetation from the ground and the stump grinder for use after the tree has been cut. Auger Torque are a new brand that we have just started to

eavy-duty TMC Cancela mulchers from Spaldings Forestry are making their mark among landowners, rural estates and contractors wanting to reclaim productive land lost to scrub, or to rejuvenate woodland through active management to improve productivity. Also capable of dealing with stumps and brash after clear felling in preparation for re-planting, the machines are earning a positive reputation thanks to heavy-duty build, innovative features and the user-focused philosophy of the manufacturer. “TMC Cancela is based in the heavily forested north-west of Spain and has many years’ experience producing this type of machinery,” explains Hefin Evans, forestry equipment sales specialist at Spaldings. “The company already builds a very comprehensive range of different models but new versions are still being introduced – such as the hydraulic TLE-50 for estate tractors, remote control machines and compact loaders, and the dual-purpose MPK-225 built to meet a specific customer requirement.” Strategic use is made of high-
strength steel for durability without excessive weight, while hard-wearing Hardox steel is used for the double-skin hood structures. The different tungsten tooth designs are all secured by two bolts set into deep recesses to protect them from wear and they work in conjunction with up to six rows of Hardox steel counter blades to thoroughly shred and mulch vegetation. Bi-rotation pto on selected models provides the versatility to operate on the front or back of a tractor, while oil-filled hydrodynamic couplings on the biggest machines provide load-free pto start-up, vibration damping and shock/overload protection. Another feature – the pivoting gearbox and parallel linkage hydraulic top link on selected models – ensures that the correct pto shaft angle is maintained at all times for reliable power delivery. These high performance mulchers are complemented in the Spaldings range by a wide selection of forestry hand tools, including chain saws, brushcutters, hand tools and climbing equipment.

I was thrilled when Willie phoned to let me know he was starting a mature oak thinning near Perth using his Tigercat 615E grapple skidder and his Komatsu 895 forwarder. I was looking forward to seeing Willie and his team and I had been assured I would get to try out both machines for myself. Willie was working on a private estate with approximately 70 large trees that required felling and extracting. The branches and crooked timber were to be cut into 3m lengths for firewood, while the straight stems would be used for sawn timber, beams or veneer. This site was being worked for Chantler Timber from
