So that I can keep you informed with latest news and features I have decided, for the time being, to alternate the e mag with our printed bi monthly magazine. Hopefully when this madness settles down we can get back to some kind of normality. One day a woodcutter went to the barbers for a haircut. After the cut, he asked about his bill, and the barber replied, ‘I cannot accept money from you, I’m doing my community service this week.’ The woodcutter was pleased and left the shop. When the barber went to open his shop the next morning, there was a ‘thank you’ card and five bags of firewood waiting for him at his door. Later, a cop comes in for a haircut, and when he tries to pay his bill, the barber again replied, ‘I cannot accept money from you, I’m doing my community service this week.’ The cop was happy and left the shop. The next morning when the barber went to open up, there was a ‘thank you’ card and a dozen doughnuts waiting for him at his door. Then a Member of Parliament came in for a haircut, and when he went to pay his bill, the barber again replied, ‘I cannot accept money from you. I’m doing my community service this week.’ The Member of Parliament was very happy and left the shop. The next morning, when the barber went to open up, there were a dozen Members of Parliament lined up waiting for a free haircut. And that, my friends, illustrates the fundamental difference between the citizens of our country and the politicians who run it.

JOHN DEERE TO EXPAND TIMBERMATIC™ MAPS AND TIMBERMANAGER™
I
ncreasing job site visibility and visualization, John Deere expands its TimberMatic™ Maps and TimberManager™ software to seamlessly incorporate data from the Waratah H-16 Measuring System. With the new capability, the TimberMatic Maps system collects production data from harvesting heads equipped with the Waratah H-16 system, providing real-time production data of processed timber linked to location through the in-cab monitor and synced to the cloud-based TimberManager. Job site progress data is then accessible to off-site managers or employees through a phone, tablet or computer using the TimberManager software. The software pairing is available for John Deere tracked harvesters or forestry swing machines equipped with harvesting heads using the Waratah H-16 Measuring System. Additionally, the TimberMatic Maps and TimberManager are included in-base on new machines ordered with a factory H-16 Measuring System. A retrofit option can be downloaded and installed at no additional charge on existing machines utilizing the H-16 system. Machines must be equipped with 4G MTG and an active JDLink™ Telematics subscription.

“With this action, we are bringing together the powerful data collection capabilities of TimberMatic Maps and the Waratah H-16 Measuring System to offer more value to our customers,” said Matt Flood, product manager, John Deere. “Many of the challenges our customers face can be improved through increased visualization of job site workflow and productivity, and communication — seeing what is actually going on. With this expanding offering, we are providing more ways for our customers to collect data and analyse their business, helping them increase outputs and boost profitability.” Launched in 2018, TimberMatic Maps and TimberManager enhance machine connectivity and communication. The TimberMatic Maps solution features mapping software for use in the field, leveraging a mobile network to share real-time production data between operators and office managers in the office. Data is collected through sensors on the equipment, while production location is gathered through GPS technology. This data is then shared to the cloud, where managers can access TimberManager from a PC, tablet or phone, allowing them to track job site progress remotely. www.johndeere.com

AUBURN RESEARCHERS AIM TO FUEL NEW MARKETS FROM HURRICANERAVAGED TIMBER
A
team of researchers from Auburn University’s School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences is exploring ways to give new life to downed timber that has been decimated by hurricanes. The body of research, coined “The Downed Timber Initiative,” aims to develop new methods of retrieving these fallen trees and branches that would otherwise go to waste or become fuel for wildfires, and then develop innovative products from the salvaged wood. wonder, how relevant is that? Is it going to touch my life?” he said. “This will clearly touch people who live in those areas, especially forest landowners who depend on timber sales.”
Peng will use good-quality wood fibers from downed timber to develop bio-based composites for value-added applications in automobiles, construction and packaging.
Hurricanes break off, tangle and lay down timber horizontally, Gallagher said, making harvesting difficult when using the equipment currently available. He is developing a new attachment that loggers could borrow—rather than buy—to make collecting the scattered timber easier.
“The goals are to maximize the utilization of our renewable natural resources for sustainability and to get the maximum return for the landowners, lowering their loss during natural disasters,” Peng said.
Brian Via is developing methods to use acoustics to measure timber strength and degradation of downed timber as a resource for making crosslaminated timber, or CLT, which is lumber glued together at 90 degrees into three or more layers. “Stronger timber can be sent for use in structural applications like lumber and CLT, while partially degraded timber might be salvaged into other product areas,” Via said. Timber rated as “weak” or “degraded” by acoustics will be sent to develop other product streams such as wood composites, nanocellulose and wood plastic composites.
Peresin will work with the USDA Forest Products Lab to process partially decayed timber into micro/ nanomaterials, or CNMs, which will form the basis of an array of products that will allow harvested downed timber to penetrate large markets. Her team will also upscale CNM production and design bio-based carriers for pesticides and controlledrelease nutrients for soil remediation. “The innovative research of our faculty has the potential to offer significant business and economic opportunities to the forest industry,” said Janaki Alavalapati, dean of the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences. WARATAH FORESTRY EQUIPMENT INTRODUCES MULTI-USE HTH623C LOADER PROCESSOR FOR TIGHT SPACES
W
aratah Forestry Equipment debuted a new model configuration of the HTH623C harvester head. The new HTH623C loader processor (LP) features a wide delimb opening for increased productivity while its short tilt frame improves reach for higher deck piles, making it more manoeuvrable and ideal for tight spaces. “The HTH623C LP takes great features of the HTH623C harvester head and expands on those for loading and processing applications,” said Brent Fisher, product marketing manager for Waratah. “With a shorter tilt frame and a larger maximum delimb opening, the HTH623C LP delivers the productivity and efficiency Waratah customers have come to expect from each new innovation.” EXTRA EFFICIENCY One of the biggest differences from the HTH623C harvester head is the large delimb opening on the HTH623C LP, which allows for multiple logs. The maximum delimb opening on the new configuration is 939 mm (37 in.), which is 239 mm (9 in.) larger than the HTH623C’s opening. The new short tilt frame allows for better log control along with more flexibility working on high decks or sloped piles, and with the advantage of grabbing multiple logs, operators can clear the yarder chute or shovel more efficiently.
As a stand-alone option, the wide opening delimb arms can also help improve log deck picking. WORKHORSE IN TIGHT SPACES With a weight of 3,140 kg (6,923 lb.), the HTH623C LP is a multi-use tool for those working in tight spaces. When a landing doesn’t have the space for multiple pieces of equipment, the HTH623C LP is the right head for the job. The new configuration features a shorter tilt frame, which permits efficient loading of trucks, improved reach for higher deck piles and more compatibility with live heels – all while maintaining easy access to hoses and valve. “With more than 45 years of innovation in the forestry industry, Waratah understands what customers need for their worksites,” Fisher said. “The HTH623C LP is another example of the Waratah team’s creativity in delivering the best machines.”
“The 623C LP is more stable and allows me to quickly get in and out of a pile when processing and loading,” said Jake Dailey, operator at C&C Logging in Kelso, Washington.
The Waratah HTH623C LP is currently available to customers in Europe, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, Asia Pacific, Brazil and Latin America.
The larger delimb opening can also manipulate larger single logs. This increased efficiency helps operators quickly clear the chute and load trucks.

production of wood energy and long-term management of forest resources, as well as tangible contributions to the Sustainable Development Goals and the Global Forest Goals of the UN Strategic Plan for Forests.
FAO’s Advisory Committee on Sustainable Forest-based Industries (ACSFI) said that the need to recover from the social and economic upheaval of COVID-19 presents a unique chance to substitute fossil fuelbased products with those from a renewable resource.
ACSFI also highlighted the vital importance of forest products during the pandemic, from providing personal protective equipment, biomass for heating, ethanol for sanitizer, respirator paper, and packaging for food and parcels.
In the statement, ACSFI advised those developing strategies to build back better after the COVID-19 crisis that sustainable forest-based industries provide a range of benefits. These include forest products, sustainable livelihoods, green jobs, support to sustainable food systems through the
“In order to continue the uninterrupted supply of these products, the forest sector has been appropriately recognized in many parts of the world as an essential service,” ACSFI stated. The statutory body called on FAO, its Members, the private sector and other stakeholders
to help build a post-COVID world in which the sustainable production and use of forest products are a cornerstone of prosperous and sustainable circular economies, ensuring the livelihood of the billions of people depending on forestbased resources. Established in 1960, the ACSFI brings together heads of forest industry and forest growers’ associations and company executives from over 20 countries around the world. As the only FAO statutory body that is solely comprised of representatives of the private sector, it meets yearly to provide guidance for FAO’s work on issues relevant to forestbased industries. The Committee on Forestry (COFO) is the highest FAO Forestry statutory body. The biennial sessions of COFO bring together heads of forest services and other senior government officials to identify emerging policy and technical issues, to seek solutions and to advise FAO and others on appropriate action. www.fao.org

RALLYING BACK ON COURSE IN WELSH FORESTS
N
atural Resources Wales (NRW) and Motorsport UK have signed a new access agreement which will allow competitive four-wheeled rallying on NRW-managed land for the next three years. For decades, NRW’s forests have played host to a range of motorsport, working effectively with Motorsport UK to stage events at every level of the sport, from grassroots to the iconic Wales Rally GB – Britain’s round of the FIA World Rally Championship. The new agreement will see local economy boosting events return to the woodland estate until 2023 with a renewed importance on the potential impacts of motorsport on the natural environment.

the public, the local communities and to our own responsibilities in helping to tackle the climate and nature emergencies. The impact of COVID-19 has seen more and more people retuning to visit our nation’s forests and has placed a greater focus on the need to respect our natural environment. In reaching this agreement, NRW is considering fully the impact of everything we do on the places people love. This includes the commitment to working with Motorsport UK on the journey towards becoming a greener, more sustainable sport in the future. This ambition will remain at the heart of our discussions as we work with the rally event organisers on the programme of events for 2021 and beyond”.
Dominic Driver, Natural Resources Wales’ Head of Land Stewardship, said: “The forests NRW manages in Wales are the heartlands of rallying in the UK and present a unique challenge to drivers. Our agreement with Motorsport UK sees new terms introduced that will make rallying in Wales more affordable to participants and allow people to enjoy the sport safely, whilst ensuring the forests of Wales
Dominic Driver added: “Rallying makes an important contribution to our rural economy and many community benefits derive from these events. However, we also fully recognise that hosting such events in our forests brings with it a wider sense of responsibility to
Motorsport UK CEO, Hugh Chambers, said: “We are delighted to announce a new agreement with Natural Resources Wales which will allow rallying to take place in the Welsh forests for at least the next three years. Rallying is an important discipline for Motorsport UK and Wales offers the perfect environment for our events to be staged on some of the most revered stages in the world of rallying. Not only is it important for competitors, but these events are vital to the infrastructure around them, from local hospitality sectors, but also the subsidiary businesses related to the sport who rely heavily on forestry rallying. We will be working with NRW to maximise the number of events, the affordability to our competitors and the long-term sustainability so we can preserve the sport and forests for generations to come.”

The announcement comes following the news that the 2020 Wales Rally GB, due to run in the autumn, would be cancelled in light of the Coronavirus pandemic and the restrictions in place designed to protect public safety. And with support growing for a green recovery from COVID-19, the new agreement will have environmental considerations at its heart with NRW and Motorsport UK committing to working together on the ambition to drive towards a lower carbon, greener and more sustainable approach to hosting the events in the future.
NEWS WELSH FORESTRY BUSINESSES URGED TO RESPOND TO CONSULTATION ON VITAL TIMBER SALES MARKETING PLAN
N
atural Resources Wales (NRW) is encouraging individual businesses in the Welsh forestry sector to have their say on proposals that could decide how the body sells timber for the next five years. NRW is seeking the views of the sector on proposals that could inform the upcoming Timber Sales and Marketing Plan in an online consultation. NRW staff will then use the proposals and feedback from the consultation to inform the development of the plan. Neil Stoddart, NRW’s Sales and Marketing Manager said: “I know that a re-vamped Timber Sales and Marketing Plan is something that many in the industry have wanted for a long time and have wanted to have their say on. Now is the chance to do exactly that. The Timber Sales and Marketing Plan will be a vital policy document for NRW and will
dictate how we sell and market timber for the next five years. While we encourage and welcome responses from representative bodies to this consultation, we are also urging individual forestry businesses to ensure their views are represented and encourage them to respond and reflect their own business needs. NRW manages forests provide approximately 60% of the sustainable timber produced in Wales every year, and this road map for how we manage the sale of this important product is sure to have an impact on the sector. We want to make sure that Welsh forestry and wood processing businesses play a strong part in the process of putting the plan together.” The consultation was launched in September and will close on 3 November 2020. naturalresources.wales

NEWS FORESTRY ENGLAND LEAD ON BIOSECURE PLANTING
L
eading the way in their commitment to plant health and biosecurity are the custodians of the nation’s forests: Forestry England. Their strict standards of plant health and biosecurity means that the 18 million trees they grow a year are the best they can be, and they are delighted to have been awarded their “Plant Healthy” certification by Grown in Britain, one of the certification bodies for the scheme. Developments such as the onehectare glasshouse at Delamere Forest have enabled Forestry England to lead the way in modern production methods for forestry seedlings. The facility grows a diverse range of tree species, ensuring long-term resilience and sustainability of the nation’s forests. Chris Hardy, Head of plant and seed supply, Forestry England says: “Forestry England have a key role to play in the battle against tree pests and diseases,
and the importance of the actions taken by the nation’s forests have never been greater. It is crucial that we move towards improved plant health measures for our woodlands. The single most important step we can take is to ensure the biosecurity and traceability of planting stock.” The Plant Healthy Certification standard helps us to protect and prevent outbreaks of pests and diseases in the nations new and existing forests. Forestry England has been a consistent and longterm partner in the development of more biosecure supply chains and has worked with Grown in Britain to support the development of the Plant Healthy Scheme with a range of partners. Dougal Driver CEO of Grown in Britain (GIB) said: “After several years of work behind the scenes, we are proud to be a certification body for the Plant Healthy scheme. A wide range of partners have been involved in this project, including Forestry England,
who have shown consistent and knowledgeable leadership coupled with excellent technical support throughout. We would not be where we are without the support of Forest England and their determination to build more biosecure supplies for everyone.” Dougal added: “Forest England opened up their facilities to help GIB and our auditors assess the risks and opportunities in nursery production and they have continuously helped us learn in order to develop a robust certification scheme for all. We wish all Forestry England staff and visitors to their forests a fantastic Grown in Britain Week” Recent research has shown that tree seeds are an important pathway for the spread of plant pathogens. Forestry England will work to ensure that the principles of the Plant Healthy scheme are in implemented across their entire supply chain. Improving the level of biosecurity for the seed they process and procure is a key area they will focus on in the future. www.forestryengland.uk

FIREWOOD PROCESSORS
A BUYERS GUIDE
I
n the 1980s, in addition to contracting in the forest, I had a lucrative firewood business. I had two pick-ups which were busy delivering firewood most of the winter - this was a boom time for the industry with most houses having open fires, wood burners and the occasional Rayburn. Although coal was a popular source of fuel, most people liked to mix firewood with the coal as it produced more flames and created a nice fragrance when burning. The nature of contracting meant you were always waiting for your money as the timber had to be hauled off site and sold to a sawmill before payment. However, firewood was different as most people paid “cash on delivery. This was a great help with cash flow to a struggling young forestry contractor, but unfortunately the firewood bubble burst due to the demise of open fires when smokeless zones were introduced and oil and gas became the fuel of choice. However, due to the increasing awareness regarding the environmental damage caused by fossil fuels, there has been a growing interest for using wood as a sustainable, renewable, low carbon alternative. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a contributing factor to climate change, so anything that can be done which will help to reduce the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere can help in tackling climate change. Using fossil fuels such as coal, gas and oil releases carbon into the air as CO2. These resources took millions of years to create, but they are being used up within a few centuries and at a far quicker rate than the global carbon cycle can cope with. In contrast, burning wood is largely carbon neutral, with the CO2 absorbed as young trees grow to compensate for that released by burning. Trees planted for wood fuel can provide a neverending, sustainable supply of wood; as long as trees are replaced as they are felled, the whole process is renewable. The carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere by burning wood will be locked up again and stored by the new trees grown for the next crop. The only increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide would come from transport and processing. It is among the most climate-friendly forms of power available to us. The carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere by burning wood will be locked up again and stored

by the new trees grown for the next crop. The only increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide would come from transport and processing. It is among the most climate-friendly forms of power available to us. This has been great news for the firewood market and consequently there has been a huge increase in the development and sales of firewood processors. There are firewood processors made to suit all types of uses and budgets from weekend hobby firewood merchants to firewood wholesalers supplying large supermarkets, garden centres and garages. There is an excellent range of quality reconditioned and almost new ex-demonstrator machines for sale and many of these are available with warranty.
DALEN
D
alen is manufactured by the Lid Jarnindustri AS in Norway, who have been trading since 1948. The firewood processors are available in three sizes and their wide infeed opening allows bent and awkward wood or tree surgery waste to be cut with ease. The 2054 is a fully hydraulic machine for quality conscious customers, who require efficiency, functionality and user-friendliness. It can be operated by a tractor PTO (minimum 40hp) with single phase or three phase electric power options. A hydraulic in-feed delivers the logs to the chainsaw. The chainsaw can cut up to 44cm diameter with the 54cm bar and .404 harvester chain. Each time the saw is operated it lubricates the chain. It has an 11.3 tonne splitting force with standard knives of two or six-

JAPPA
L
aitilan Rautarakenne, known as Japa in the UK, was established in 1977 by Jari and Jarmo Paavola in Laitilia in Finland. Their initial goal was to manufacture equipment which would make agricultural and forestry work easier. The company is now owned by the Terra Patris Group and their products are exported to several different countries. This accounts for 75% of their production.

The Jappa 365 processor is simple to use and the fully hydraulic operating system can be run with tractor PTO, electric motor or combustion engine. It can also be equipped with tyres for legal road use. It has an in-feed conveyor, hydraulic chainsaw with a 0.375” or 0.325” 15” saw chain capable of cutting up to 37cm wide logs in adjustable lengths up to 60cm. It has a seven tonne splitting force with a 4 or optional six/eight-way splitter and a 4.2m out-feed rotating conveyor belt for loading the logs into a trailer or sack. Furthermore, it has a safety interlocking one-piece guard which completely covers the cutting area and can be fully opened for maintenance. This processor can easily handle bent and awkward logs and comes with a full 12-month warranty. www.japa.fi

PALAX
P
alax is another well-established Finish company which has been manufacturing forestry equipment for over 60 years. They have an extensive network of worldwide dealers and are available in over 30 countries. The Palax Combi C700 can be powered three ways: by tractor driven PTO, Electric motor or a Honda petrol combustion engine. A combination of v-belts (the belts are self-tensioning, which reduces the strain on the transmission and extends the belts life) and hydraulics operate this processor. The cutting is performed by a circular saw blade which is able to cut up to 25cm. The reason for some of their processors using a circular saw is that although the cutting diameter is slightly smaller than a hydraulic chainsaw they produce less sawdust and are less susceptible to jamming. The metal blade cuts the wood quickly and requires significantly less maintenance; it can also be changed in seconds with the quick release system. Firewood lengths from 25cm to 60cm can be cut using

this process. The high-speed valve maximises the splitting speed and it can be fitted with a two, four or a six-way knife with a splitting force of 5.6 tonnes. The conveyor is fitted with a lifting winch and a convenient chain lock. Getting the conveyor ready for operations or to transport on the tractor is quick and simple. There is also a wheeled towing package which will convert it into a mobile, road legal and easily transported processor. This is a safe, fast, productive firewood processor which requires minimal maintenance. www.palax.fi

POSCH
P
osch processors are manufactured in Austria and have been involved in the firewood industry for almost 70 years. A lot of the components for the processors are manufactured “in house” by the company’s skilled workforce. The 170 employees are committed and passionate about the work they do. The S375 is an updated version of the tried and tested S360 Turbo model with some improvements. This has made it even more user friendly with
Page 20
a quicker operating speed whilst retaining the quality and reliability expected from Posch equipment. It is operated via a one-handed joystick. This processor has a three-way power system, tractor PTO, Electric and combustion engine options. The logs are fed into the circular saw via the hydraulic in-feed, which can process logs up to 37cm in diameter and they can be cut into 20-50 cm lengths. The splitting force is 12 tonnes and logs can be split into two, four, six or eight pieces before being loaded into a trailer or sacks via the 4m long angled conveyor belt. This processor is capable of 20m³ of loose firewood per hour, and with the turbo package this figure can increase to an extremely impressive 25m³ per hour. A wheeled, road legal option is available with this model. www.posch.com

RABAUD
C
laude Rabaud was a French farmer who started manufacturing in 1974. In 1980, his company moved to their current premises where 200 people are employed manufacturing over 8,000 machines each year. The company is currently managed by his two sons, Éric and Jérôme Rabaud. There are two power options for the Rabaud Xylog 390: a tractor PTO (35hp minimum at the PTO) or an 18.5 kw electric motor with a PTO (available from Rabaud). It has a hydraulic in-feed to the carbide tipped circular saw blade which will cut up to 39cm in diameter. Log lengths can be set to between 20 and 50cm at 5cm intervals. A splitting force of up to 13. tonnes is available with the option
of two, four, six or eight pieces. There is a 4m conveyor, which can be adjusted for different heights with a hand winch for loading the firewood into waiting vessels. A good, reliable, easy to use processor designed for professional use. www.rabaud.com
There are many extra options available for all these processors to speed up production including log loading decks, bagging units, lifting loading tables, sawdust collectors, etc. All of the processors explored above will cope with both hard and softwood firewood and can handle awkward and bent firewood safely. These models are made by long established manufacturers with excellent reputations for quality and reliability, so it is a question of which model or make best suits your needs and budget. This is only a small selection of the manufacturers available. November 2020

NEW TMK MULTIGRAB The 30th of October saw the launch of the newest addition to the TMK product family, the Multigrab which is basically a Swiss Army Knife for excavators. The idea came about as TMK were looking to manufacture a multipurpose grab that could be used as a sorting grab, tree root shear, tree stump remover, rake, rock grab, brash grab and strong enough to withstand working in the demolition industry. The frame is extremely strong and can withstand a lot of stress and the moving grapple arm is easily removed when not required. Like many TMK products they keep moving parts to a minimum to help reduce wear and the Multigrab is no exception as it has only the one moving part.
excavators. There are several hydraulic cylinder options and it can be fitted with a rotator for extra versatility. TMK are looking to supply their customers with the perfect product for their needs so smaller and larger versions of the Multigrab are already on the drawing board. www.tmktreeshear.com| www.ncdequipment.com

STIHL LAUNCHES WORLD’S MOST POWERFUL PRODUCTION CHAINSAW
S
TIHL has launched the new MS 881, the world’s most powerful series-produced chainsaw, ideal for professional heavy-duty felling, logging and mobile saw mills. With 121.6cc of displacement and 8.6hp/6.4kW output, the MS 881 is not only 19% more powerful than the heavy duty MS 661, but also the only saw in the STIHL line-up to drive a 0.404 pitch chain. With standard bar lengths up to 41” and able to accept guide bars up to 59”, the new saw is the ideal machine to tackle even the most demanding forestry jobs. At the heart of the MS 881 is the STIHL 2-MIX engine that ensures the machine is the only chainsaw in its performance class that meets the strict requirements of the European Euro-5 (EU5) exhaust emission standard. In addition to EU5 compliance, the MS 881 has been engineered with maintaining a great power-to-weight ratio. New construction of cylinders, slimmer sprocket covers, and the development of lightweight components have resulted in an impressive weight-to-power Page 24
ratio of 1.55Kg/Kw, whilst maintaining robustness and durability. In addition to outstanding power, the new chainsaw is designed with operator comfort in mind thanks to a one-touch stop button, ensuring the MS 881 is ready to start at any time, whenever it is warm. Other design features include captive nuts on the optimised chain sprocket cover that offer additional convenience when changing the chain, as well as a new oil pump that regulates oil flow rate according to demand, guaranteeing optimum oil flow at all times. A long service life and ease of maintenance are improved through the use of a new HD2 air filter with a radial seal that provides excellent protection against fine dust often created when planking and in saw mill environments. The introduction of a diagnostic socket means that specialist dealers can quickly identify a fault and eliminate it quickly.
