For a harvester operator, an easily operated crane is important for ensuring a productive working day. Every movement that can be simplified contributes to increased production. Now we are taking simplified crane control to the next level with the introduction of Komatsu Smart Crane Harvesters, which automatically takes care of the telescopic function. The crane acts like a single unit. The result is faster and easier crane operation as well as a more relaxed and effective operator.

I managed to skive off for a week and went to Belgium on the bike for the Battlefield Run, which pays homage to all the soldiers killed in the First World War. I felt a bit selfish as it was a guys trip, and I was abandoning Wendy at a crucial time in getting the latest issue ready for printing. The guilt lasted for at least two whole minutes, before I focused on having a great time. Wendy had a lot to do and I knew it was going to be a big push to get this issue ready for printing. On my return I got the surprise of my life. Not only had Wendy almost finished putting the magazine together, but had repainted my office, the bedroom and the fence around the garden. With this in mind, I conclude that the best course of action going forward is for me to take a lot more time off!

SOLID ALL-TERRAIN STEER TYRES
SKID
Evolution Wheel is known as a leader in manufacturing topquality, severe-duty skid steer tyres. The EWRS-AT series solid skid steer tyre is made for severe duty, allterrain applications. This tyre is designed for skid steer operators working in off-road conditions requiring reliable tyres with incredible traction. Evolution Wheel knows how frustrating flat tyres and machine downtime can be on the job site. So, they developed a tyre specifically to tackle these Evolutionissues. Wheel takes the research and development stage seriously. Their products are put through rigorous testing, to make sure they produce the best tyre for the job. The EWRS-AT series is engineered for severe duty applications where longevity, traction, and reliability are the biggest concerns. To do this, they investigated optimizing the tread design. Skid steer tyres often have a wear bar in the centre of the tread that provides stability to the small lugs. The problem is that a tyre’s wear bar significantly reduces traction when the tyre reaches 25%-50% of its life. Evolution Wheel saw this and increased the lugs on the EWRS-AT to 2.5” width and 52/32”wearable tread depth. without the bounce they often have. This makes the tire much more stable when carrying Oneloads.of Evolution Wheels’ biggest features on their tyres is that they are segmented. The tyre segments are bolted onto the rims allowing the operator to easily service the tyre. On the off chance, a lug is damaged, the operator can remove that segment and attach another with only a wrench in their back pocket. This will minimize downtime on the job www.evolutionwheel.comsite.

Increasing the lug’s width and height enables them to eliminate the need for a centre wear bar and increase longevity. In addition to a longer life span, it allows for more space between the lugs for better cleanout and traction. Along with the superior tread design, Evolution Wheel wanted to make sure that the EWRS-AT provided a smooth ride. They achieved this by incorporating core geometry in the rubber. Core geometry refers to the apertures in the rubber that allow the rubber to flex. The unique geometry of these apertures allows the tyre to compress like a pneumatic

megafire, and that’s usually what’s been presented in the press,” Harmon said. “But that did not match what we were observing, so we did a very detailed study examining the combustion process at different levels of the fire system, starting with twigs and ending up at the level of the entire fire.”
Harmon, fire ecologist Chad Hanson of the John Muir Project and Dominick DellaSala, chief scientist with the Wild Heritage Project, looked at the Creek Fire, which affected nearly 400,000 acres beginning in September 2020, and the Rim Fire, which started in August 2013 and spread across more than 250,000 acres. The scientists spent four years on the ground in the fire areas, studying and calculating combustion rates at the level of branches, trees, stands of trees and landscapes to determine the amount of carbon that remained in trees versus what was released into the atmosphere. “The estimates of the percentage of trees combusted in large fires are all over the place – they are often high – and this has been a major concern in the recent literature, suggesting that better estimates are needed,” Harmon said. “Our work delivers one such estimate, one that provides a framework to synthesize combustion rates at different levels of the forest and different levels of fire severity.”
“While many field scientists likely would not find our results surprising, there were recent peer-reviewed published estimates of up to 85% live tree combustion from the Rim Fire,” Harmon said. “Other studies based on a literature review suggest up to 65% of the live trees could have been combusted in high-severity patches. No one in the peerreview process questioned the results.” Even in severe fire patches the larger-size trees showed low combustion rates – less than 5%, Harmon said. Large trees account for the majority of a forest’s biomass, leading to the low overall combustion rates at the stand level, he explained.
Research on the ground following two large wildfires in California’s Sierra Nevada mountain range showed the vast majority of carbon stored in trees before the blazes was still there after the Publishedfires. in the journal Forests, the findings are an important step toward understanding the connection between wildfires and carbonclimate-change-inducingemissions,according to a scientific collaboration that included Mark Harmon of Oregon State University. Carbon dioxide, a product of combustion, is a major greenhouse gas and one of the primary causes of climate change. Knowing how much carbon is released during fires can help inform decisions about the carbon storage and emissions implications of forest management decisions, say the Whilescientists.satellite- and LiDAR-based research has suggested as much as 85% of living trees’ biomass combusts in California’s big fires, the study led by Harmon, professor emeritus in the OSU College of Forestry, indicates the amount of combusted biomass is less than 2%.

The study showed that while combustion rates were 100% for the smaller branch segments of big trees and up to 57% for whole small trees, the combustion rates were low overall at the stand level (0.1% to 3.2%) and the landscape level (0.6% to 1.8%). Stand level refers to all trees of various species and sizes in an area of a particular fire severity class; landscape level means the entire burned area, averaging over the fire severity classes.
reporting; this can potentially misdirect climate mitigation policy,” he said. Dead trees decompose slowly as new vegetation grows and absorbs atmospheric carbon, the scientists point out. If fire-killed trees are allowed to remain in place, the natural decomposition process might take decades to hundreds of years to release the trees’ carbon. On the other hand, if those trees are logged to serve as energy-producing biomass, that same carbon could potentially enter the atmosphere much faster. More study is needed, the researchers note, to determine the degree to which post-fire forest management influences the carbon release time frame, including how biomass energy might offset the burning of fossil fuels and how wood products release carbon as they are used and disposed.
live operation between the M90 at Halbeath and the M9 north of Newbridge from Monday 23 May 2022. Minister for Transport Jenny Gilruth said: “This camera system on a key section of the M90 is designed to help improve journey times for drivers. A comprehensive campaign is now underway to raise awareness of this change ahead of the camera becoming operational on Monday 23rd May so that everyone using the route will know what to expect.”
“Even for megafires classified as high severity, much of the area within the fire perimeter burned at low and moderate severity with less than 0.5% live tree combustion at the stand level,” Hanson added.
Road users are being given advance notice that a camera system will be operational from later this month, in an attempt to encourage improved driver behaviour and compliance with the variable speed limit. A variable mandatory speed limit (VMSL) is in place across a 22 km stretch of road between the M90 at Halbeath and the M9 north of Newbridge. Varying the speed limit on this stretch of road aims to help smooth traffic flows at busy times and make journey times more reliable. However, of over 200,000 vehicles which travel across this section of road every week almost 1-in-5 are speeding with a persistent number of vehicles speeding excessively. This behaviour has led to stopstart conditions, resulting in unreliable journey times with trips taking up to 5 minutes longer during busy periods. Scientists are increasingly emphasizing the importance of storing more carbon in mature, older trees whether forests have burned or not, DellaSala said, as a way to curb total greenhouse gas emissions. “We suggest that researchers and policy makers avoid using combustion rates not based on field study as they appear to overstate the wildfire emissions used in carbon emissions “The effects of salvaging and putting some of that wood into durable wood products need to be fully investigated,” Harmon said. “More fires need to be examined using our type of approach to determine how variable the combustion rates are at different levels for different forest types and ages.”

High Coast Distillery selects the raw materials it uses for its whisky production with great care. Everything must be of the highest quality and free from additives. The company has a clear focus on their sustainability efforts. Plug-in hybrids for company cars and working intensively on energy savings are just some of the steps the company has already taken. “It doesn’t matter how energy efficient we become, we’ll always need relatively large amounts of energy to boil distillates and heat brewing water, among other things. In 2020, we decided that we’d also would become sustainable in these areas, so we replaced our
Aworld-class whisky is being produced in an impressive building by the mighty Ångerman river in northern Sweden. Large amounts of energy are required to produce whisky but at this particular distillery, energy is produced from pellets supplied by SCA. “By rejecting fossil fuels and instead harnessing the potential of forests, we reduce carbon dioxide emissions from heating processes by 450 tonnes a year. What’s more, we’ve also started producing organic whisky,” says Roger Melander, distillery manager at High Coast Distillery.
When the oil boiler was in use, it consumed just over 500 litres of oil a day, seven days a week, virtually all year round. The transition to pellets has reduced carbon dioxide emissions from heating processes by 450 tonnes per year. This is equivalent to the emissions from 180 petrol-powered passenger cars travelling 2,000km consuming 0.5 litres of fuel every 10km. Burning pellets is completely climate neutral. Less carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere from burning pellets than the trees that they are made from absorb during their lifetime – so burning them does not add to the greenhouse effect. oil-fired boiler with a pellet boiler,” explains Roger. The pellets are delivered by SCA. The raw material for the pellets is sawdust, which among other things comes from the Bollsta sawmill a short distance away downstream. And production of the pellets at SCA’s facility at the mouth of the river is climatesmart. “The pellets contain only natural ingredients. Just like our whisky. It’s fantastic that we can use the forests of northern Sweden to make our production even greener,” says Roger.

Following the transition to pellets, High Coast Distillery has chosen to become a certified organic whisky producer. In December 2021, the distillery mashed its first batch of organic malt. “We actually already met the requirements for organic production because it’s determined by which raw materials and barrels you use; but we didn’t have the heart to call our products organic while we still used fossil fuels. But now we can do so with pride.”

ECONOMICAL The switch from oil to pellets also brings other benefits, especially financial, with savings amounting to approximately SEK 800,000 a year. “Pellets are cheaper than oil and there is also considerable uncertainty over the oil price going forward. We had expected to see a return on investment in about six years, but it’ll probably be faster than that,” says Roger. There were certain concerns related to how the pellet burner would operate, because the whisky production process requires large and rapid adjustments in energy flow. “We didn’t know if the burner would be powerful enough, but it has worked perfectly. We don’t need to worry about refilling our pellet reserves either. SCA and the delivery company are connected to the warehouse, so they keep track of how many pellets we have and replenish continuously.”

High Coast Distillery is located on the outer reaches of the whisky world. Far from big cities and a long way from the world’s whisky stores. But its location is carefully chosen, based on everything that the climate and nature of northern Sweden offers. For example, for storage, the company benefits from the significant temperature differences that occur during the year. The company’s warehouses are not fitted with any temperature controls and follow the seasons, which creates unique conditions for the whisky production process. Ångerman’s icy waters are also a huge asset. They provide cooling for the process, enabling the production of a very pure distillate. “Our location right on the

Under the auspices of this project, around SEK 2.5 billion has been invested in a new biorefinery with the capacity to produce 200,000 tonnes of liquid biofuel. The new plant is expected to be operational in 2023 and will produce renewable diesel (HVO) and fossil-free aviation fuel, among other things. “We’ll now be able to work further along the value chain with our own pine oil, which is a residual product from the production of sulphate pulp at several of our factories. This allows us to create more benefits from a larger proportion of our renewable bioraw materials from the forest,” says Källgren. Källgren believes that the global sustainability trend and increased focus on sustainability suggest that the market for biofuels will grow. “Society as a whole is in a formative stage in which we have begun to phase out fossil fuels and the pressure to achieve more sustainable transport is increasing. Naturally, this affects demand for biofuels and opportunities for private motorists, roadfreight, and the entire aviation sector to move away from fossil fuels,” says www.sca.comKällgren.

Tubex, the UK’s leading manufacturer of tree shelters, is celebrating 35 years of production at its site in Aberdare, Wales. To mark this milestone, key stakeholders and influencers from the forestry sector visited Aberdare in May to see Tubex’s tree shelter manufacturing processes firsthand. The anniversary comes at a time of significant growth for Tubex, a brand of Berry Global, given growing awareness of the need for widespread tree planting nationwide. Tubex has received investment [from Berry] to boost its ability to better support customers through increased stock, capacity, automation and sustainability. In particular, Tubex’s Aberdare site is leading the drive towards full circularity in tree shelter manufacture, by achieving up to 35% recycled content in its core range – with a clear pathway towards 100% within the coming years – and 100% already on other products. This is supported by Tubex’s Collection and Recycling Scheme, which ensures responsible disposal of tree shelters, and closes the loop to increase the usage of recycled

PROCESSIONARY MOTH CATERPILLARS Nests are typically dome or teardrop-shaped, averaging the size of a tennis ball. They are white when fresh, but soon become discoloured and brown. The caterpillars have black heads and bodies covered in long white hairs which contain proteins which can cause itchy rashes, eye, and throat irritations. They can also occasionally cause breathing difficulties in people and pets, so should not be touched under any moth-in-englandmanaging-oak-processionary-https://www.gov.uk/guidance/circumstances. • pest-free areas; • Nurseries where the trees have been grown under complete physical protection for their lifetime. The controls apply to all businesses which import living plants and their constituent parts, including live plant foliage and plants for planting, into Great Britain. The restrictions do not apply to processed plant products, such as timber, wood chips and packaging materials
This action comes following the confirmed interception of Pine Processionary Moth on a small number of pine trees at tree nurseries in England and Wales, imported from France in February this year. Pine Processionary Moth larvae and caterpillars can cause significant damage to pine and other conifer tree species, and pose a risk to human and animal health as they are covered in tiny, irritating hairs.

Emergency legislation restricting the movement of pine and cedar trees into Great Britain to help protect against the imminent threat of the tree pest Pine Processionary Moth has recently been announced. Pine Processionary Moth is present in North Africa and Southern Europe, in particular in Italy. It has also recently been spreading northwards through France. As a result of this legislation, it will no longer be possible to import pine and cedar trees grown in countries where Pine Processionary Moth is established, such as Italy and France. Exceptions apply in cases where Pest Free Areas are designated, or where the trees have been grown under complete physical protection for their lifetime. The new regulation, in the form of a Statutory Instrument, will strengthen requirements for the import of pine and cedar trees into Great Britain from Friday 29 April. The bolstered measures will only permit imports of these species, both of which are host species of Pine Processionary Moth, from:

Across Great Britain, rapid and robust plant health enforcement action has taken place to prevent the spread of Pine Processionary Moth into the wider environment. The infested trees at the affected nurseries were swiftly contained and destroyed, whilst tracing work to identify other consignments that may be affected is ongoing. Although there is no
and immediate action to protect tree nurseries and the wider natural environment from the imminent threat of Pine Processionary Moth. “The increasingly globalised plant trade, along with climate change, continue to present new and emerging risks from pests and diseases. Strengthening our rigorous standards of biosecurity – already among the highest in Europe – will both minimise the net potential losses to our existing treescapes and serve to realise our long-term vision for the nation’s trees and woodlands.”
evidence of pest spread into the environment, increased surveillance and pheromone trapping will be carried out over the summer as a precautionary monitoring measure. Healthy trees and plants benefit people, the environment, and the economy. Protecting the long-term welfare of our treescapes will underpin Government efforts to treble tree planting rates by the end of this Parliament and plant 30,000 hectares of trees across the UK per year by 2025, as well as form part of wider efforts to achieve Net Zero by 2050. A blanket ban on plant imports would not stop all pests and diseases coming into the UK, given they can arrive by other pathways. For example, they can be blown in via weather patterns or via airborne infection. By adopting a riskbased approach informed by evidence, we are confident that the right balance can be struck between biosecurity and trade.
Pine Processionary Moth is not currently established in the UK and is classified as a GB quarantine pest. Pest risk assessment suggests that Pine Processionary Moth could potentially establish in some warmer areas of the country. We encourage those who work in the live plant trade to continue to be vigilant for signs which may indicate the presence of PPM on imported pine and other conifer plants, and if symptoms are identified, to report them immediately to the plant health authorities. Assessments have shown that the overall impacts of this legislation to businesses in the forestry sector will be low. Despite any short-term business impacts, this legislation will safeguard the long-term future of the live plant trade from the potentially devastating impacts of PPM, if it were to be introduced and become established in Great Britain.

thousands more cases of illhealth and working days lost. Wood dust can cause serious health problems. It can cause asthma, which carpenters and joiners are four times more likely to get compared with other UK workers, as well as nasal cancer. Our campaign aims to help businesses whose workers cut and shape wood to take action now to protect their workers’ respiratory health. Through visiting wood working businesses, our inspectors are able to speak to a range of dutyholders and look at the measures they have in place to comply with the guidance and protect workers from respiratory diseases such as occupational asthma and nasal cancer.
“Businesses can act now to ensure they are complying with the law by ensuring the control of wood dust at source by fitting and using extraction on machines. Ensuring they fit and use guards on machines to protect fingers and hands and ensure those that use the machine to understand the risks and how to control them. Checking that guards are well adjusted will minimise danger and ensure that dust capture remains effective. “Our inspection initiative aims to ensure employers and workers are aware of the risks associated with the activities they do. They must recognise these dangers and manage these risks through reducing exposure. Dutyholders need to do the right thing, for example, through completing a risk assessment, ensuring workers are trained, appropriate guarding is fitted and adjusted correctly, and reducing exposure using local exhaust ventilation (LEV) and using suitable respiratory protective equipment (RPE) to protect workers, where required.”
are some of the measures businesses should consider as Britain’s workplace regulator is carrying out inspections to protect the respiratory health of workers. From April, health and safety inspectors across Great Britain will be visiting business within woodworking industries such as sawmilling, manufacture of composite boards, and carpentry, as well as other industries where wood dust exposure can occur. Woodworking industries have the potential for high incidence rates of occupational asthma and work-aggravated asthma caused by worker exposure to inadequately controlled wood dust in the workplace.
Inspectors will take enforcement action when necessary to make sure workers are protected.

Keeping oil channels free of debris and adjusting chainsaw motors so they maintain the correct chain speed is also important.”
Top forest manufacturers, machineincluding long term partner John Deere, choose KASIGLAS® with its mar-protect abrasion resistant coating as it is:
When a harvesting head is crosscutting in line with the harvester the only protection offered to the operator in the event of chain shot or flying debris is the front window. Operating a harvester or forwarder for long hours, five days a week, is tiring on the body and eyes at the best of times. When you throw in shorter daylight hours, dull days with poor daylight and harsh weather conditions, then eyestrain increases tenfold.

The KRD Group from Geesthacht, in Northern Germany manufacture a tried and tested solution to these problems with their trademarked KASIGLAS® Compound System. Made from polycarbonate it is as transparent as glass with only half the weight and an impact resistance 250 times higher. KASIGLAS® offers extreme protection for those industries where mechanical stress, weather and chemical contamination can occur.
• Chain shot resistant and offers exceptionally high optical quality. Other additional features include the invisible defrost system, smart heating system and operator glare protection with 95% light absorption. Anyone operating a harvester will testify to how frightening it is when the front windscreen is suddenly struck by a highspeed flying object. This could be from a hung-up branch or a treetop falling from height, stones embedded in the bark of a tree or even chain shot where the chainsaw chain snaps or Chainshatters.shot is the high velocity separation and ejection of a piece or pieces of cutting chain from the end of a broken chain. A chains cutting speed is normally 40m/sec, but on breaking can accelerate up to 309m/sec (1,112km/hr) almost the speed of sound. Higher chain speeds with attendant power input equates to faster cutting speeds but faster cutting speeds mean increased wear, shorter service life and increased chance of chain breakage and injury. Researchers estimate that chain shot might occur in 1 in every 50 chain breaks. Harvester chain manufacturers are continually looking at ways to strengthen chains without compromising on performance. A short while ago I compiled a feature on chain shot with Iggesund Forests cutting equipment specialist Iain Lawrence. “Chain shot is impossible to eliminate” explained Iain “But steps can be taken to reduce the risk. The KRD Group was established in 1968 during a period of civil unrest in Germany. At the time, the police were ‘piggy in the middle’ as they had the impossible and thankless task of protecting the state and the public. Police vehicles came under attack from rioters. Gerd Brammer, the founder of the KRD Group, experienced all of this as a technical and involved observer. Tasks were assigned to KRD and became more diversified as creative solutions were needed and time was short. The Police vehicles required perfect “allround protection”. Not only could the windscreen and windows shatter, but the vehicle body was also a weak point. Gerd Brammer quickly produced several means of protection:
• Kasiglas: plastic composite window - The thickness of the material makes KASIGLAS® unbreakable
• Puncture protection: The cavities around the body were filled to protect them against impact and puncture.
So far, over 2,000 forest machines cabins have been fitted with KASIGLAS® marprotect. In addition to being extremely abrasion- and impactresistant, the 3D design means that the front windscreen and side windowpanes can be replaced with a single pane, increasing an operators field of vision considerably.

people. LOW-IMPACT, PRODUCTIVE AND COMFORTABLE WORK ENVIRONMENT Centipede has been developed to meet the challenges of forestry and offers three important benefits: Lower soil compaction, increased productivity and better work environment. “This is a comprehensive project, in which the parties are taking a long-term approach to promote sustainable forestry.
Swedish forestry is facing major challenges and the issue of sustainability is the focus of attention. For this reason, Södra, Sveaskog, SCA, Holmen, Norra Skog, Mellanskog, Stora Enso and BillerudKorsnäs, as well as the forest machinery manufacturer Komatsu Forest, have jointly developed a new forest machine for low-impact forestry. With its innovative technology, the machine –called Centipede – is designed to ensure the most sustainable possible management of forests for both the environment and Anew type of forest machine is currently driving around the forests of Sweden. It combines a low-impact approach, increased productivity and an improved operator environment and is the result of a major cooperative project that has been under way since 2019. The concept machine is called Centipede and it has been developed by eight Swedish forestry companies and a forest machinery manufacturer. The machine is currently being test driven and the results are promising.

Magnus Bergman, manager for technique and digitalization at SCA Skog and Chairman of the project’s steering committee: “The forest industry and Komatsu are now jointly taking a major technology leap with a machine that is more gentle on the environment and the operator, at the same time as it enables a more efficient flow of timber. With Centipede, we can meet the challenges arising from increasingly shorter periods of frozen ground and, for this reason, the machine is one of the most important development projects in forestry.”

in soft terrain, which is also positive for both the environment and profitability.
An extensive preliminary study was implemented and a new machine concept was developed during the project. The machine has been thoroughly evaluated through simulations and test drives. The comprehensive testing will continue in spring 2022 and decisions will thereafter be made about the project’s continuation.
In the project, we have fundamentally challenged today’s technology and taken a step into the future,” says Erik Nilsson, CTO of Komatsu Forest. The machine is built to reduce the risk of ground damage, to increase transport speed and to reduce whole-body vibrations for the operator. The machine has a newly developed forestry track system, with a large support surface to minimize ground impact. It also has a fully suspended chassis to handle uneven ground conditions, enabling the speed of the machine to be increased significantly without the corresponding increase in Withvibrations.thisnewly developed technology, Centipede can be driven both on sites that are normally regarded as winter sites and on sites that are significantly impacted by precipitation. In addition to being able to satisfy timber supply throughout the year and thus provide better prerequisites for profitable harvesting operations, Centipede has a number of characteristics that will directly increase production. As a result of its innovative design, Centipede can move around the terrain significantly faster and can carry a larger load than the Komatsu 855, which was used as the benchmark. Both of these characteristics create conditions for significant increases in productivity. In addition, Centipede has demonstrated in simulations that fuel consumption is reduced by up to 15 percent

Our members who own their forests want to hand over land to the next generation that is managed with a low-impact approach. This enhances the forest’s an important issue. This is therefore a significant and longawaited development and it is also fully in line with Sveaskog’s long-term orientation for more sustainable forestry. With this, we can see an opportunity for us in the forest industry to jointly take a major step forward with an efficient forest machine that is gentler on both the environment and the operator.” layout, hydraulic system, drivetrain, and boom system optimized for yarding. components that are common to Tigercat track machines. In addition to the increased working envelope, the boom has a more powerful lifting capacity compared with a conventional dual function arch. For cable assisted applications, the skidder can be factoryequipped for tethering with optimally positioned frame lugs and through-the-blade cable routing. The lugs attach to the frame structure behind the front axle, closer to the payload.
The capabilities of the six-wheel drive 635H in steep terrain and cable assist applications have been taken to the next level with the integration of a Tigercat designed and built swing boom system initially introduced on the 635G series skidder. The additional working envelope and ability to position the grapple well outside of the working track of the machine increases productivity in applications where skidder travel is restricted or limited by terrain characteristics. With the ability to lock the seat and operate the machine from any position with full drive controls, the Tigercat Turnaround® 220° seat is an important advantage for swing boom skidding applications. Richard adds, “Coppicing is a traditional woodland management technique, where we cut trees or shrubs back to ground level to stimulate growth. It is an important way of maintaining a healthy habitat for woodland creatures like hairstreak butterflies and dormice. “The traditional use of heavy horses to work the land declined after the Second World War, Real horse-power will be used by National Trust rangers at Scotney Castle in Kent to clear timber that has been removed as part of coppicing work, a technique which stimulates tree growth and improves wildlife habitats. Despite their power and stature, the horses have been drafted in as a lighter alternative to tractors as they cause less damage to the clay soil and surrounding trees. They are also a greener option, carrying a smaller carbon footprint than fuel-powered machinery. It is the first time heavy horses have been used as part of coppicing work by the National Trust at Scotney. In the High Weald where Scotney Castle is located, however, there is a long tradition of using animals to extract wood.
Richardmachinery.Newman, Area Ranger at Scotney Castle says: “The landscape surrounding Scotney has not changed much in the last 1,000 years. Many of the road routes date from before the Romans, and possibly into the bronze age, and still run north to south, following the routes people used to drive animals into the area for summer grazing. We still have a relic of a bolster that carried timber out of the woodlands in our old timberyard here.” The team will be putting the horses to work in an area of woodland which has old clay pit workings and narrow access through the trees. Heavy machines would churn up the soils and vegetation, but the horses will expertly negotiate the tricky terrain to help clear timber across a hectare of woodland, including sweet chestnut, hazel and the occasional alder.

The development of this model is a result of global collaboration between the John Deere Wheeled Cut-to-Length and Full-Tree Forestry teams, aiming to implement IBC’s field proven technology into MH-Series of tracked harvesters. With IBC, operators no longer need to control each independent boom function separately. One joystick moves the boom tip horizontally, while a second guides it vertically, for faster cycle times and more precise control. IBC’s smooth and fluid motion actively dampens functional change of directions, protecting boom structures and increasing wear life. IBC also automatically controls swing speed based on the overall position of the attachment. “The continuous product development, new features, and the updating of systems and solutions are an integral part of John Deere’s way of operating,”

said Jim O’Halloran, product marketing manager, John Deere. “Intelligent Boom Control is an example of an important operator assistance feature that we will continue to evolve throughout full tree forestry. Developing solutions for our customers’ needs are our number one priority and investing in innovation like IBC is an example that helps the overall productivity and profitability for the whole machine life cycle.” Improved productivity, compared to the same machine without IBC, is another benefit for customers. IBC allows the operator to focus on controlling the attachment, helping improve efficiency. The controls used for reaching and securing trees for harvest intuitively mirror how the equipment might function if it were the operator’s arm. IBC is now available on the 953MH and 959MH. Our 35-tonne live line harvester allows work to be carried out without the need to temporarily turn power supplies off in the area, minimising disruption to our customers and enabling work to be carried out safely in one of Aberdeenshire’s worst storm-hit forests.”
Much of the tree felling work – that will be carried out by FLS contractors and SSENs own team – can be done safely back from the road during May and June. However, traffic management will be needed to safely deal with the unstable, standing trees along the road. This will involve an east bound lane closure and a temporary speed limit of 30mph from 6 –
17 June. Traffic management will be in place at off-peak times (09:30 to 16:00) from Monday to DanFridays.Cadle, FLS’ Harvesting, Forest Management and Stewardship Manager, said; “We’re dealing with some very big trees here - a mix of Sitka Spruce and Douglas Fir some of which are 35m tall and weighing several tonnes. With the work being so close to the road and the powerline, it’s requiring a coordinated effort from several agencies to make sure that this passes off smoothly. “We appreciate that there will be some inconvenience and apologise for that in advance.”
Aberdeenshire road users are advised that major forestry works at Kirkhill Forest, just off the A96 at Tyrebagger beside Dyce, will see traffic management in place from 6th to 17th June 2022. Forestry and Land Scotland will be working with Transport Scotland and teams from BEAR and Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) Distribution to clear wind-blown and unstable standing trees along the frontage of one of Aberdeenshire’s worst storm hit forests. As well as clearing the damage to eventually re-open the forest to visitors, removal of the unstable trees will remove the risk of more trees blowing over and risking the safety of road users, as well as the risk of damaging the road and the powerline running alongside it. Graham Stirling, Lead Harvesting Manager at SSEN Distribution, said; “This past winter, Storms Arwen, Malik and Corrie resulted in multiple points of damage to our network infrastructure in the north east, with significant disruption experienced in the area due to fallen trees and wind-borne debris striking overhead power lines. While our immediate priority was to repair damage to our network and restore power to our customers as quickly as possible, we’re now working alongside Forestry and

Oncebased.the building and construction industries restarted, forestry started to pick up as the demand for sawn timber gained momentum. This prompted Adam to take a slight diversion in his career, instead of servicing and repairing forestry equipment, he decided to operate a forwarder.
An engineer understands the pressure placed on equipment working in harsh forestry conditions, so when looking for someone to carry out repairs, modifications, or to turn your design into a reality, no one is better So,qualified.withpen, notebook, and camera in hand I set off to see Adam Scott, the proprietor of AS Engineering and Fabrication, a forestry engineer and designer based in Dumfries and Galloway. Adam’s workshop is easy to find and is based just outside the village of Dunscore, a short drive off the main A76 trunk road, not far from Auldgirth a few miles east of Dumfries. The workshop and yard have good to repair, he began chatting to the owner and discovered he was looking for a mechanical engineer to work within his company. Adam was offered the job and spent the next six years working in Western Australia. Once the mix of sawdust, oil and grease gets under your fingernails its difficult to pursue another career path. The lure of working in forestry became too much for Adam so he made the decision to return home. He was thoroughly enjoying being back working in forestry when out of nowhere, the 2009 recession hit, causing building and construction work to grind to a halt. The knock-on effect for forestry was disastrous, there was literally no demand for round timber and Adam found himself at a loose end. Luckily, he found work with an explosives company which had a specialised engineering division for mining, ironwork, and machine welding. This was a handy stopgap, but it was never intended to be a permanent move as the work was workshop

access and are easy to navigate for low loaders with large scale forestry equipment. Adam was busy in the workshop when I arrived, he was welding together a pair of two-man welfare units which he had designed himself for a customer. After leaving school Adam attended an engineering course at the Barony College in Parkgate and went on to specialise in forestry engineering servicing and repairing Lako Forest Oy harvesting heads with Brian Hastings. His engineering career took a surprising turn while on holiday in Australia. His hire car broke down in the desert and had to be towed to a nearby repair shop. While waiting to find out how long it would take

Longer wheel studs and wheel spacers were added so that there was enough clearance between the bogies and tyres. One of the wheel bearings was replaced as it was badly rusted and pitted, the other three were checked and repacked. Other work included a new extension roller, machined and fitted, as the old one had seized solid and hot cross bun wear pads were fitted to reduce the sideto-side play on the extension. New aluminium handles were machined and installed on the hydraulic valve block as they were missing when the trailer was Adamdelivered.isenthusiastic about his work and was keen to show me photos of his most recent projects. One such project was a temporary repair on a forwarder chassis to prevent flexing and allow it to continue working. The chassis strengthening plates are currently being drawn up, cut, and folded and will be welded on, solving any further issues. Other repairs include He took a FMOC course at the Barony College and after successfully completing this started operating a forwarder professionally. Although we had never met, we did have a slight connection, as Adam drove the Ponsse Buffalo that I had previously operated for the Dick Brothers Ltd. Adam operated forwarders for five years before returning to forestry engineering when he joined the Jas P Wilson team at Dalbeattie. For the next three years, he not only carried out engineering work, but was also charged with designing and creating new and exciting Lastprojects.year
terrain, so to accommodate this Adam increased the length of the bogie pivots by 35mm.
Adam made the decision to start up his own forestry engineering business. This has proved to be a good move, as he has been inundated with work from the start. He has a well-equipped workshop capable of carrying out all types of work from small repairs to large engineering projects, stainless steel and aluminium welding. He has a fully fitted out pick-up with a three-phase generator for tackling on-site projects and repairs and will travel up to a 50-mile radius from his workshop for on-site Adamwork. loves the variety that his business brings. On my visit, he was in the final stages of making the two welfare units plus he had a Botex forwarder trailer that had undergone various modifications in the yard ready for delivery. The owner of the trailer wanted to improve the amount of bogie travel for better performance on rougher Dipper Boom before and after.

It was then removed, welded, and painted before being re-fitted and ready for collection by Ponsse. After Ponsse had finalised the rest of their alterations, the machine was delivered to the customer, and I went out on site to add a few finishing touches and to try it for myself. “The top of the butt plate was serrated to grip the logs so, when placed on it with the grab they wouldn’t slide off during extraction. The Swedish Transport Agency has granted AirForestry’s application for operational authorization for operations with unmanned aircraft, for a specific category according to SORA. The permit applies to the company’s closed test areas east of Uppsala. Only a few other companies have a permit to fly drones in this size class. Paul Carbonnier is a trained pilot and has been in the aviation industry since the 90s, he is today AirForestry’s Head of Flight Operations and will be responsible for, among other things, structures, routines and areas of responsibility for the company’s aviation operations. He emphasizes the importance of building aviation safety at an early stage. “ The market and the use of UAS, unmanned aerial systems, is growing explosively both in and outside Sweden and we are only at the beginning of the development. AirForestry has reached a crucial milestone and can now fly test its drone system which will be used to thin trees from the air. The Swedish Transport Agency has issued a permit for the company to fly its large drone at its test arena east of Uppsala. With in-house developed drones that can harvest trees from the air, AirForestry wants to pave the way for new gentle and sustainable methods of caring for and managing the forest. The company’s large thinning drones measure 6.2 meters and are being developed to thin forests. A key element for the company was to be able to start test flights with the drone outdoors, which is why they started working early on with the application for a permit. The Swedish Transport Agency granted the permit in April this year. “Being able to carry out test and evaluation flights outdoors is a very important step for us. That we got our permit so quickly, and for a drone as large as ours, shows how high credibility our aviation business has and that we have worked in the right way from the beginning. Both with our technical development and flight operations.“ That’s what Mauritz Andersson, CTO and one of the founders of AirForestry, says. exciting to work with these issues at AirForestry, which is one of the globally leading companies in its field area.”
FIRST BATTERY DELIVERY FROM VATTENFALL AirForestry has also just announced that the company will start using Vattenfall’s mobile energy warehouse to charge these drones. “With batteries from Vattenfall, we get the last piece of the puzzle for a completely fossil-free thinning system ,” says Gösta Forsén, CIO at AirForestryAirForestry.and Vattenfall will carry out a one-year pilot project where AirForestry’s drones are charged with fossilfree energy using a mobile energy storage of 100 kWh. COMFORT, ECONOMY AND ENVIRONMENT From an economic and environmental point of view, hybrid harvesters are at their best when run on maximum power. Essential benefits of hybrid technology are still somewhere else: they’re inside the cabin. Operators notice the quick response of hybrid power as the harvester reacts quickly to every control, compared to a standard diesel harvester. The operator never runs out of power, even when using all the machine functions at the same time. Because of the extra power that the electric power unit gives, the diesel engine can be smaller, without sacrificing the overall power output. We’ve seen similar development in turbo technology – in the last 30 years, combustion engines have become smaller due to the turbos. Hybrid engines do the same, resulting in POWER LOGSET HARVESTERS

R&D and operating costs have always been at the centre of Logset’s approach. Back in 2016, Logset were the first company in the world to build a hybrid harvester - the 12H GTE Hybrid is still the biggest harvester in operation today – a machine that is at its most productive in large scale fellings. The smaller 8H GTE Hybrid was introduced in 2019. It is a powerful, but smaller machine for medium to large sized felling operations. The interest and demand for these hybrid machines, which are built at Koivulahti, Vaasa, Finland, has increased year
HYBRID
WHY HYBRID TECHNOLOGY? Hybrid power is quite simple. The electric motor also works as a generator that charges up super capacitors. Electric power is used for heavy loads, such as sawing and crane operations, the response is very quick, making harvester handling smoother and more efficient. Hybrid power reduces peak loads of diesel engine because all maximum power needs are aided by electric power. The diesel engine runs roughly at 1500 rpm on maximum loads because of the hybrid assist. This in turn reduces 10% and puts less stress on the diesel engine.
Logset hybrid harvesters draw attention with their low consumption, rapid power response and good user experience.
Logset’s hybrid system takes to a new level.

The hybrid system eliminates the power peaks normally required from the engine. The stable engine performance saves significant amounts of fuel, prolongs the lifespan of the engine and lowers maintenance costs. ECOLOGY The hybrid system uses electricity to generate power. Electrical energy is known to be green and environmentally friendly. The lower fuel consumption and stable engine performance also mean less exhaust gases to the environment. Logset hybrid harvester meets all modern environmental standards, without compromising profits or power.
Logset’s wide product range consists of seven harvesters, seven forwarders and seven harvester heads. Two harvester models are equipped with hybrid power unit.
Logset hybrid harvesters have been working in forests around the world for more than five years. The harvesters have been tested in action by many independent companies and the results are exceptionally good. In Sweden, machines have achieved over 25% less fuel consumption. The Finnish research company Metsäteho made comparisons with the Logset 8H GTE Hybrid versus the traditional diesel Logset 8H GTE. Although the diesel-powered 8H GTE is already particularly good on fuel efficiency, in medium size felling, the hybrid measured a reduction of 8% in fuel costs. The same test proved an incredible 30% rise in productivity with the Hybrid. The main difference is measured when counting fuel consumption per cubic meter of processed wood - results can be over 30% savings compared to other www.logset.commanufacturers.

The Logset 8H GTE Hybrid is a powerful medium-sized harvester that doesn’t slow down under pressure. The machine´s diesel engine runs at a constant pace, while the hybrid system provides up to 104 kW (142 hp) of additional power required in a typical felling and processing cycle. This allows the hybrid harvester to easily perform several tasks at the same time, while keeping the engine load constant.

n a sunny Tuesday morning on the 22nd of March, TMK’s squad hit the road. We headed to the airport to catch a plane to London to spend a few days visiting our good friends and to see how they were getting along with their equipment. Since 2014, all the TMK products have been imported to the UK and Ireland by NCD Equipment, so it was a no brainer to head straight over to meet Nick and the team when we landed in the UK. NCD has grown considerably over the years and they have first class facilities to serve their customers with.

FROM LEFT TONY KOPONEN, PAUL DENNING, NICK DINSDALE & PATRIK OLLILA On Friday it was time to head towards Norwich and visit James Riley from JW Riley Contracting. Jim has a TMK 200 from 2017, with the serial number 020 which is still in very good condition. It’s always nice to see equipment which has been well looked after! JW Riley does mostly hedge cutting with the shear but this time he was working on a forest project for a local hunting association. He was using his Bobcat E62 with a Rototilt to run the TMK 200. To get more flow to the shear, James runs his hoses straight to the shear, bypassing the Rototilt. This is good as long as the hoses are run so that they don’t get pinched and the operator remembers not to rotate the shear too much and rip the hoses.
THIS TIME EVEN OUR VERY OWN ANTTI, NORMALLY BEHIND THE CAMERA, MADE IT INTO THE IMAGE! FROM LEFT ANTTI, PATRIK, JAMES, NICK & TONY.

Paul Denning from JDB Contractors and Son has four TMK’s in his fleet. On Thursday we headed to Paul’s to see their 15 ton Liebherr working with a TMK 300 and collector which was clearing a fence line. The old fence had been taken over by the overgrown woodland so the trees were cut back so that the fence could be removed. JDB Contractors and Son do a lot of road side clearance and they also carry out big projects for the Ministry of Defence to maintain their land. Paul has also been a TMK customer for a long time and it was great to see how he has grown the business.

Friday evening we enjoyed a little Go-Karting fun. On Saturday we had some more quality time together and had a bbq as well before reluctantly heading back home on Sunday. All in all, it was satisfying to see how hard working people have been able to be successful and grow their businesses. Thank you UK and all our friends there for having us! We had a great time and it is always nice to meet our customers and hear their feedback. We now have plenty of ideas and have gained some valuable insight during this trip. Now it’s back to the drawing board to try and turn them into Let’sreality.seewhat we can come up with this time.

This follows a decade in which the family-owned business has invested over £25 million in new capital equipment, including a major upgrade to the main sawmill, construction of a new fully automated bandmill, installation of a new state of the art processing and handling line for re-saw operations at the site and also the purchase in 2019 of the Chirnside Sawmill near Duns in the Scottish borders.
The company is now well positioned for sustained growth in its main markets for fencing products, railway sleepers, garden product components and other outdoor timbers in the years ahead, building on its record of delivering quality sawn timber products and high standards of customer service to its loyal base of customers across the UK. The company has also extended its product range, adding NHSS4 highways standard fencing to its existing fencing ranges and developing the offer of high quality potato and vegetable storage boxes it has long Managingproduced.Director, Robert Scott, said, “Our excellent relationships with our customers give us the confidence to plan and invest for the future. This new line is the first investment made possible by the addition of this land to our site, and, with further planned investments to come, will enhance our sawmilling output, product quality and service standards in the years ahead.”
A&J SCOTT NEW HIGH SPEED LINE UP & RUNNING WOOD PROCESSING www.forestmachinemagazine.comPage 64 June 2022
Timber processing is now underway on the newly installed log grading & sorting line at A&J Scott. The £6m project marks the latest investment in future production capacity at the Northumberland based sawmill, one of the UK’s leading independent mills. Having completed the purchase of a 20-acre site adjoining its main sawmill site 2 years ago, the family owned company has now installed and commissioned the new high speed log grading line supplied by Broadbaek & Co of BeforeDenmark.installation could begin, the company faced the mammoth groundwork task of integrating the site into its existing operations, removing 12,000 tonnes of topsoil, 140,000 tonnes of sand and gravel and pouring 6,000m³ of concrete to work on, all made more complicated by the supply difficulties surrounding labour, transport, concrete and steel during the Covid lockdowns.
The new grading line has been delivered via a newly laid road into the site served by a new weighbridge and extended log storage areas. The increased processing capacity of the line will support the company’s plans to increase production this year and with new developments in the years ahead.

the system, winning several Innovation Awards. Prof. Uwe Baake, Head of Product Development at MercedesBenz Trucks, explains: “The intensive discussions with our customers and their experiences from day-to-day operations formed the foundations for us to make further adjustments to individual technical parameters, thereby generating even greater added value, especially in terms of display and safety.”
The exterior of the second MirrorCam generation stands out because the camera arms on both sides have been shortened by ten centimetres. This applies to both the narrower and wider cab and, among other advantages, allows drivers to reverse in a straight line more easily than with the first MirrorCam generation. This comes as a result of MirrorCam’s perspective now being even more akin to that of conventional glass mirrors.
As part of the revision of the camera-based system, Mercedes-Benz Trucks has also evolved further features. For example, the revised MirrorCam arms now incorporate an enhanced housing design which further reduces the risk of Mercedes-Benz Trucks presented a truck with cameras instead of exterior outside mirrors back in 2014 with its study entitled “Mercedes-Benz Future Truck 2025”. In 2018, it was the first in the industry to introduce series production of MirrorCam – the first mirror camera system for trucks. A series-produced truck equipped with MirrorCam no longer had traditional main and wide-angle mirrors. Instead, it had a system consisting of two cameras attached to both sides of the roof frame as well as two portrait-format monitors attached to the A-pillars in the cab, together with the corresponding controls in the driver’s cab. A conscious decision was made to use two equally sized, 15-inch monitors on the driver’s and front passenger’s sides. This is because the larger the image of a moving object, the easier it is to judge its speed. For the driver to identify the image information relevant to the situation as quickly as possible, a complex, multi-quadrant view was also replaced by a single Mercedes-Benzimage. Trucks has now updated MirrorCam for the first time. With the second generation, available for the Actros and Arocs as well as eActros series since April 2022, Mercedes-Benz Trucks has evolved important details of
Shorter dimensions bring about another benefit because with the 2.5 metre-wide cab, the camera arm now protrudes no further than the kerb mirror which is within the driver’s sight. Collisions with objects at the edge of the road are now virtually impossible. As chassis widths are identical, this also applies to the 2.3 metre-wide cab variant.

COMMITTED TO SAFETY AND DRIVER CONVENIENCE These revisions result in an even higher added value for MirrorCam overall. Thanks to its supporting effect, the enhanced system can help to manage situations such as overtaking, manoeuvring, driving in poor visibility and darkness, cornering and passing narrow spaces even more safely and without causing stress. The existing advantages are still available, such as wideangle mode when reversing, distance lines on the display for better assessing the distance from objects behind the vehicle being driven, camera image panning when cornering, and monitoring of the vehicle’s debris obscuring the camera lens and causing undesirable visual effects. In addition, engineers at Mercedes-Benz Trucks have further optimised the tone mapping – tone mapping is a process in which an image is adapted so that a large range of tones are displayed correctly on a medium – reflected primarily as an improved contrast display. The camera system’s evolution in colour and brightness adaptation, which is already very bright in itself, means that the displays show the area relevant to the driving situation even more accurately when the vehicle is reversing into a dark or poorly lit facility, for example. surroundings during rest
Theperiods.interaction between MirrorCam and the cornering assistant from Mercedes Benz Trucks has already proved helpful, especially in complex traffic situations and at confusing junctions. If, contrary to expectations, there is a risk that a truck driver fails to spot a cyclist or pedestrian when turning left, Sideguard Assist can – within its system limits – warn the driver as part of a multi-stage process, using the MirrorCam display to provide visual www.mbtrucks.co.ukwarnings.

microprocessor, for much quicker calculation times. Second, an added disc in the gearbox brake makes it react faster before a gear shift, so it can be done earlier. Finally, the air volume has also been reduced in different actuation systems, for example the shift forks, the clutch and the gearbox brake, to further enable a faster gear shift.
VOLVO TRUCKS INCREASES I-SHIFT GEARBOX SHIFTING SPEED BY UP TO 30% HAULAGE www.forestmachinemagazine.comPage 68 June 2022
Volvo Trucks’ intelligent and automated I-Shift gearbox is now faster than ever. The quicker response provides improved driveability and smoothness to the driving of both diesel and electric heavy-duty trucks. The significant driveability improvement, which has been added to drivelines at all emission levels, is achieved by the new way in which the I-Shift gearbox interacts with the engine. The update includes faster clutch activation that results in a shorter torque interruption. It also makes the gear shifting smoother, for a more harmonious driving experience. “Faster gear shifting makes it possible to optimize the gear selection more efficiently. And the more shifting events that the road and terrain requires, the more the improvements will be appreciated by the driver. With up to 30% faster gear changing now possible using I-Shift, drivers will certainly experience a very positive difference,” says Pär Bergstrand, Heavy Duty Transmission manager at Volvo Trucks. The high-speed shifting is achieved based on several key improvements. First, updated sensors now provide data with higher accuracy to the control unit, which features new software and a faster
When I-Shift was introduced in 2001, it was the first-ever automated transmission designed for heavy duty trucks. It has the ability to work with the entire powertrain, since this transmission system is tailored to the engine and vehicle components already from the development phase, contributing to lower fuel consumption – and thereby reduced environmental impact. It also promotes increased safety and other important benefits including reduced noise, vibrations and physical strain on the driver. These latest advances to gain 30% faster gear changes are further evidence of Volvo’s never ending, continuous improvement actions to provide better all around driveability. “With all the improvements and new variants over the years, I-Shift has had an outstanding ability to solve more and more advanced tasks in efficient ways. This means not only delivering high performance and fuel efficiency but also outstanding driveability and comfort for the drivers,” comments Pär TodayBergstrand.allheavy-duty Volvo trucks are built with I-Shift as standard. EDUCATION SIMULATION
still enormously over inflated - and as if by magic, the panic was Everywhereover.
you look companies are searching for drivers and operators. Companies offering operator and driving apprenticeships are becoming harder to find. The minimum wage puts a strain on company finances and as most of the equipment is relatively new it can be expensive to repair or replace due to mishaps with inexperienced operators. Trainees are unproductive with operating costs much higher than returns and once the reach the point of being productive they can be lured away by another company for a larger salary as they haven’t had the investment of training.
Well, simulators are a good training vessel, they can be limited and expensive to buy and generally manufacturer specific, but they are ideal in forestry colleges - what few we have left - and in manufacturers premises where students and trainees can hone their skills without expensive fuel costs and the fear of damaging Atequipment.thelastInterforst Exhibition I had the opportunity to try out a training simulator made by independent company Tenstar, it created quite a stir. At the time, Mikael Frimodig was Area Sales Manager for Eco Log, and he was more than happy to show the Tenstar technology that Eco Log used on their own simulators. I was only able to try it out briefly, but I remember being stunned at how realistic the experience was, so much so, that I included it as one of the highlights of the show in the following Issue. Last year Mikael left Eco Log to pursue a new career as the Business Area Manager for Tenstar Simulation. He is very passionate about Tenstar and was enthusiastic in explaining about the new developments and programmes that they had been implementing into their Tenstarsimulators.has the unique ability to combine several machine types within the same platform, providing flexible and costeffective learning. The company offer various levels of simulators from a basic desktop to the combination simulator with interactive touch screen for all of the Tenstar vehicles, with the full set of accessories and options and motion base for enhanced realism. These simulators can be used not just a training tool but also as an aptitude test in schools by helping students to decide on which career path suits their With the lack of training facilities in the UK, its no wonder there is such a famine of skilled labour for driving and operators’ jobs. This problem has really come to the forefront since Brexit. The steady stream of drivers and operators that used to come to the UK has now become a dribble, highlighting the problem even further. I live in the industrial central belt of Scotland. Our shops and supermarkets have been struggling to fill their shelves and chemists don’t have the medicines they need for prescriptions. It’s a regular occurrence to see garages without fuel. Blame has landed squarely at the Russians door with their Invasion of Ukraine and the sanctions imposed on them, but in reality, it is the lack of tanker delivery drivers that is the real problem. One Saturday we had a diesel shortage as the supermarket garages had run out. This created another mass panic, every man and his dog with a diesel car went from garage to garage to top up his vehicle. This created another “panic buy” in garages that had diesel and saw massively inflated prices at the pump. This is one of the best training tools I have seen as not only does it teach trainees how to operate or drive competently, it also shows them how to do the development
The combination simulator uses head tracking to give the field of view in the direction of where you are looking and is just about as real as it gets. You can access the drone shot so that you can see your work area from outside the machine and the VR Headset adds more realism to the simulation with better depth perception and enables VR walk-around for machine Toinspection.enhance the realistic experience Tenstar uses a motion base with 3 DOF (Degree of freedom). Using advanced motion pattern technology this increases the feeling of working in an actual machine. Pedals, joysticks, and steering wheels are easily interchanged for the equipment programme the simulator is running and it comes with a professional driver’s seat with a low back. Tenstar use the best and highest quality from BE-GE in Sweden. After logging in to your personal account each new session starts with a visual pre-start check of the equipment with a virtual walk around. Randomised faults are set on this exercise so trainees can show that they have carried out a thorough check of their equipment/ vehicles prior to starting work and that they understand the importance of good Usersmaintenance.startwith basic training

The operator has complete control and can set the tree size fell them to avoid damage to the remaining trees and where to stack the produce to avoid further tree damage by the forwarder. Two simulators can be connected to work in unison, for example the harvester and forwarder or combine harvester,
This harvester programme demonstrates how to position the harvester, fell trees within target zones, how to avoid damage to the remaining trees in a thinning, the order that the trees should be felled in and how to present the processed timber for the forwarder. A single tree species can be selected or a mixed crop - this helps students identify the different species and present them separately for the forwarder - as they are often used to make different types of products in the sawmill.
and whether the trees are to be thinned or clearcut. When the percentage for thinning is set, the simulator will mark the trees to be felled with a yellow ribbon. This teaches users how to select trees that should be removed, the direction to work.

Students are taught how to use and set up the machines computer systems for driving, crane operations, produce values, pulse opening on knives and a support tool for repairs. Although hydraulic hoses can be damaged by operating the machine incorrectly, they are much easier to repair with a quick push of the re-set button.

“It is great to see that the young forestry school I went to as a student received Ponsse´s simulator number 200”, says Carl-Henrik Hammar, Managing Director of Ponsse Sweden. Södra Viken has worked in educating forestry professions since 1947. “We really appreciate our excellent cooperation with PONSSE. We would also like to thank the Lundberg Foundation for making this investment possible. To us this means that we can offer modern and updated teaching year after year”, says Monica Olofson, principal of Södra Viken.
