Your free wall planner is included with this issue, and although we have done our best with adding the dates of shows and exhibitions, please check with the organisers before planning anything. Events are still being moved, postponed or even cancelled at the last minute due to COVID-19. If you would like any extra free copies of the planner, see page 77 for more details. Weather-wise it looks like someone has gone to bed and forgotten to turn the taps off in Scotland, as it has rained non-stop for as long as I can remember. I’m all ready for the winter ahead though as I had my flu and Covid booster jab at the same time, which not only bloody well hurt but left me with two sore arms. Here’s hoping I get some news on my two new hip joint replacements soon. It’s a funny thing getting old and decrepit. Many of the things that my mum did for me when I was a toddler I find that I need help with again. I hope the new hips will allow me to reach my feet so I can put my socks on unaided and without performing acrobatics and let me buy proper shoes with laces that I can do up in a pretty little bow myself.

SWEEP WOOD ASH FROM THE FIREPLACE TO THE GARDEN

M

any homeowners wonder what to do with all the ashes left behind after the flames in the fireplace or fire-pit die down. As you clean the fireplace or fire-pit, do your plants a favour and sprinkle the ashes in the garden instead of throwing them in the garbage. Because wood ash is derived from plant material, it contains most of the 13 essential nutrients the soil supplies for plant growth, according

to Oregon State University Extension Service experts. When wood burns, nitrogen and sulphur are lost as gas, but calcium, potassium, magnesium and other trace elements remain. The carbonates and oxides in the ash are valuable liming agents that can raise pH and help neutralize acid soils. Where soils are acidic and low in potassium, wood ash is useful to most garden plants. Do not use ash if your soil pH is alkaline

GLENNON BROTHERS COMPLETES BALCAS ACQUISITION

G

lennon Brothers, a third-generation timber processing business, founded in Longford, Ireland, in 1913, has now completed its acquisition of Balcas from parent company SHV Energy (LPG) Holding BV. The transaction was subject to approval from both the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) in the UK, and the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) in Ireland. Balcas was established in Enniskillen, Northern Ireland, in 1962, and consists of two divisions, Balcas Timber and Balcas Energy. Combined, the Page 6

business has a turnover of c. £108 million and employs 370 people. Balcas Timber incorporates the sawmilling operation in Enniskillen, County Fermanagh, which produces quality sawn timber products for the Fencing & Landscaping, Agricultural, Construction and Pallet & Packaging sectors. In addition, Balcas Energy operates two renewable energy plants at Enniskillen and Invergordon, Scotland, which incorporate CHP (Combined Heat & Power) and the manufacture of Balcas Energy Wood Pellets. Mike Glennon commented: “We are delighted to have completed www.forestmachinemagazine.com

(more than 7.0). Do not apply wood ash to acid-loving plants such as blueberries, rhododendrons and azaleas. Lawns that need lime and potassium also can benefit from wood ash. Apply no more than 10 to 15 pounds of ash per 1,000 square feet of lawn. First, test your soil’s pH with a simple kit available at garden centres and home improvement stores. Keep in mind that wood ash is alkaline, which means it has a high pH level. You should use the same precautions with it as when handling other strongly alkaline materials, such as household bleach. www.oregonstate.edu the acquisition of the Balcas business, which will enhance our overall product and service offering. This acquisition allows us to continue fulfilling our commitment to our customers of offering a one stop shop solution for sawn softwood across the UK and Ireland”. Glennon Brothers has been at the forefront of green technology solutions within the sawmilling sector having recently invested in a CHP Plant within its existing facility in Troon in 2016. The addition of two further CHP Plants as part of the Balcas acquisition offer further synergies as well as reinforcing the business’ green credentials and overall commitment to sustainability. The official announcement was made upon signing on Friday the 29th of October 2021. www.glennonbrothers.ie December 2021

THINNING MODERATES FOREST FIRE BEHAVIOUR EVEN WITHOUT PRESCRIBED BURNS

M

echanical thinning alone can calm the intensity of future wildfires for many years, and prescribed burns lengthen thinnings effectiveness, according to Oregon State University research involving a seasonally dry ponderosa pine forest in north-eastern Oregon. Findings of the study, led by OSU research associate James Johnston and published in Forest Ecology and Management, are important because reducing accumulated fuels on federal forestland has been a congressional priority for nearly two decades; research such as this helps determine which techniques work. Johnston’s team looked at years of data for multiple forest parcels – mechanically thinned stands and unthinned control stands – and used computer modelling to predict the behaviour of future fires. The collaboration included his Oregon State College of Forestry colleagues Julia Olszewski, Becky Miller and Micah Schmidt, plus Lisa Ellsworth of the OSU College of Agricultural Sciences Page 8

Forest Fuels Monitoring

and Michael Vernon of Blue Mountains Forest Partners. “Most of the studies that have been published so far suggest mechanical thinning that isn’t followed by prescribed fire is not as good for moderating fire severity than thinning combined with prescribed fire,” Johnston said. “Some studies have even suggested that thinning without prescribed fire can increase wildfire severity by adding to the build-up of fine fuels on the forest floor.” Mechanical thinning refers to the use of commercial equipment such as a feller buncher, which cuts and stacks whole trees, or a cut-to-length harvester and forwarder that results in logs of specific lengths being sent to the mill. In the study areas, all trees up to 53 centimetres in diameter at breast height were removed, and hand crews cut down trees too small for commercial use. “Our work shows that mechanical thinning can moderate fire behaviour even in the absence of prescribed www.forestmachinemagazine.com

fire,” Johnston said. “That’s good news since prescribed fire on national forests has remained flat over the last 20 years because of shortfalls in U.S. Forest Service capacity, a risk-averse agency culture and regulatory constraints on smoke.” Fuels built up for a year or two after thinning and then declined, and litter and duff declined dramatically as a result of thinning, he said. Forest litter refers to any non-living organic matter that’s fallen to the ground and yet to undergo much decay; duff is the layer of decayed and decaying organic matter between the litter and the soil. “Although the models show that thinning alone moderates fire behaviour for a number of years, prescribed fire is still a key tool for meeting fuel reduction and fire management objectives in the ponderosa pine forests of the southern Blue Mountains and elsewhere,” Johnston said. “Prescribed fire will extend the longevity of what the mechanical thinning December 2021

accomplished when the conifers regenerate significantly and those surface fuels start to rise above desired thresholds.” Across western North America, seasonally dry forests were historically characterized by frequent, low-intensity surface fires that led to the persistence of older trees living in open stands, he said. But starting about 130 years ago, the logging of old, fire-resistant trees, unregulated grazing and a national culture of fire suppression combined to bring much greater tree density, fuel continuity and surface fuel loading. “Those changes along with a warming climate have led to increasingly large, fastmoving, stand-replacing fires that have significant negative impacts on oldgrowth habitat, water quality and human infrastructure,” Johnson said. “Consequently a range of non-governmental organizations, tribal, state and local governments and private landowners are trying to adapt by reducing fuels.” Johnston notes that Congress has taken several steps to increase the pace and scale of fuel reduction treatments on Forest Service lands across the West, including the 2009 authorization of the Collaborative Forest Landscape Restoration Program, which funds thinning on high-priority national forest landscapes. The southern Blue Mountains, the subject of this research, are one of those high-priority areas, and between 2012 and 2020 more than $17 million has been spent to thin 87,000 hectares in December 2021

the 220,000-hectare area. “Less than one-fifth of the area treated with mechanical thinning in the southern Blues has also been treated with prescribed fire,” Johnston said. “Prescribed fire has been significantly slowed by budget constraints, local opposition to fire use, and restrictions imposed by COVID-19 response measures. But our modelling shows thinning can do a lot on its own in terms of rate of fire spread, flame length and crown fire potential. Investments by Congress in fuel reduction thinning in eastern Oregon are working.” The Forest Service and Blue Mountains Forest Partners funded this research. In another paper, recently published in the journal Forests, Johnston and OSU colleague Chris Dunn collaborated with John Hogland of the U.S. Forest Service to show that the vast majority of the Malheur National Forest can be restored to ecologically desirable conditions through the commercial harvesting of woody biomass and some timber harvesting. “The profit margins in most areas, approximately 80% of the landscape, are quite small, and removing material without incurring a financial loss usually requires the removal of sawlogs,” Johnston said. “It’s a reasonable trade-off, a good trade-off. Saw timber is part of what needs to come out of the woods to manage fuels and reduce fire risk.” www.today.oregonstate.edu www.forestmachinemagazine.com

PARKING UP THE PONSSE

T

his is one article I never thought I would be writing. My friend and colleague Davy Wilson has finally decided to pass on his PONSSE Scorpion King’s keys and enjoy a well-earned retirement! Davy has been in forestry for over 50 years and spent the last 20 odd years operating PONSSE harvesters for the Dick Brothers Ltd from Galashiels. He is one of the most productive operators I have ever known and someone who manages to get the very best from the harvester he operates. His machine is always Page 12

in immaculate condition, and it is a rare to hear of Davy needing mechanical assistance. Any forwarder operator who has followed Davy knows that he is one of an elite group of naturally gifted harvester operators. I was lucky and had the opportunity to follow him on several occasions. One site I worked with Davy was on a Euroforest harvesting job in central Scotland, he was cutting multiple sizes of products which can be a forwarder operators’ nightmare. Not so with Davy, his presentation was as close to www.forestmachinemagazine.com

perfection as you can get, I think there was about 12 different sizes on each harvested drift and every stack of produce was tidy, separate and easy to lift. We were working in particularly bad weather with a lot of snow, and I was having to secondary extract the timber about half a mile down an icy forest road to where the Lorries could collect it. The whole of Scotland was affected with bad weather and this was one of the few sites that wood was moving from. I was running without chains or tracks, and it was especially soft in places with some deep drains hidden by the snow, inevitably I December 2021

got stuck quite a few times. Davy would always stop what he was doing and be over instantly with his harvester to de-bog the forwarder. It’s during times like these you realise that Davy is a team player and what happened on site stayed on site. I have known Davy for over 20 years and he is a true gent every sense of the word and is revered by anyone that knows him. I remember speaking to Davy Dick a few years ago about Davy and he said jokingly that it’s such a shame that the technology wasn’t available yet to clone him. High praise indeed! Neil Simpson currently works alongside Davy. “I have been fortunate to have followed Davy for the last six years and anyone who has worked with this gentleman will tell you what a first-class job he does. It doesn’t matter if it’s flat or steep the presentation is always spot on.” “I would describe Davy as an absolute grafter and a proper gentleman who commands the respect of everyone who has worked with or alongside him. He was on the go 12 hours a day every day but still had the time to help anyone who needed it.” “It’s been a joy to work with Davy and he has made my job so much easier. Mrs Wilson had better keep him busy otherwise she might have to accept semiretirement as I honestly believe it won’t be the last time, I see Davy at the controls of a PONSSE harvester.” “I would like to wish Davy all December 2021

The last site Davy was working with forwarder operator Neil Simpson prior to retiring.

the very best for the future and to thank him for not cutting too many 1.7m posts.” Most of Davy’s harvesting was carried out for Euroforest who are the UK’s largest independent provider of timber and marketing services in the Scottish Borders. Simon Coleman, Director for Large Clients at Euroforest, has spent many years working along with Davy. “Davy Wilson was the first harvester driver I meet when I started with Euroforest 14 years ago. At the time he was driving for the Dick Brothers and working with a former Euroforest manager, Kenny MacKenzie in the Scottish Borders where they had worked together since 2003.” “Davy and Kenny had a good working relationship and Davy would often instil his pearls of wisdom with comments like ‘only fools and bairns should see a job half done’, leaving it up to Kenny to decide which he was.” www.forestmachinemagazine.com

Davy showing Simon Coleman, Director for large clients at Euroforest, how to hug trees properly.

“Davy continued working for Dick Brothers and Euroforest and in 2009 started harvesting for Aitchesse (now Gresham House) at a challenging forest called Longford in the Scottish central belt. The forest had a heavy-duty forest gate that was diligently locked every night and weekend, and all was okay until Davy returned to site one Monday morning to find he had Page 13

NEWS a harvester, but no harvester head!” “Davy’s friendly and conscientious personality didn’t go unnoticed, and a programme of work was soon identified by Aitchesse for Euroforest and Davy in Eskdalemuir. In 2010 Davy started harvesting in a large forest complex called West Buccleuch before moving over the road to a forest called Midgehope. He has since harvested almost continuously in Midgehope, cutting much of the timber harvested to date.” “Davy’s attention to detail and his ability to maximise value are key skills highly sought by Euroforest and Gresham House, and he soon became one of our drivers of choice.” “Davy is a true gentleman and has always been willing to show customers and visitors the commercial side of forestry and demonstrate how trees are turned into timber in exchange for a few warm pies. He has helped several Euroforest staff over the years develop their harvesting knowledge and careers from trainees to managers, myself included and I wish him all the best in his retirement.” On a personal note, Davy, you will be sorely missed by a lot of people in forestry. Wendy and I wish you a long and very happy retirement. You are leaving a void in the industry that will be almost impossible to fill. I would also like to remind you that I won’t be taking retiring as an excuse for you to stop subscribing to my magazine.

IN CONVERSATION WITH… BAM•BU BICYCLES

T

he owners of a Portuguese bamboo bicycle business speak about their passion to promote the grass plant in Europe. By the standards of their small Portuguese village Curia, Joana and her brother Tiago have a rather unusual occupation. The siblings run their own bamboo bicycle workshop, Bambu Bicycles. What started as a passion project has now become a major way of raising awareness about bamboo in Europe: travel journalist Sergi Unanue recently completed his tour of continental Europe using a Bambu bicycle, covering more than 7000 km in 142 days. Joana and Tiago first became interested in bamboo when Joana was living in China, a country famously rich in bamboo resources. Tiago, who was an industrial designer for Evoke Motorcycles, came to live with Joana for a few months, and the two became interested Page 16

in bamboo as a material. As Joana puts it, “We were dazzled. When we first discovered bamboo bicycles, we became amazed by their unique appearance, beautiful design, light weight and comfort to ride. We instantly fell in love with the idea of starting to craft our own bamboo bikes and becoming the first bamboo bicycle frame builders in our home country, Portugal.” Joana and Tiago learned how to build bamboo bicycles, and then put them to the test: cycling 300 km along the famous Camino de Santiago together with their younger brother in 2019. Since then, they have been busy refining their product. In October 2021, Sergi Unanue completed his own mammoth cycle ride on a Bambu bicycle, from Punta de Tarifa, the southernmost corner of Europe, to the Northern Cape, Norway. Joana says that Sergi carried a small repair kit, in case he needed to add resin or www.forestmachinemagazine.com

reinforcement, but adds that the bike did not encounter any large issues during its 7000-km journey. On the uniqueness of bamboo, Joana says: “Every material has its special properties, [including] advantages and disadvantages.” Bamboo is a good option for bicycle frame building because of its tube-like shape, and its strength-to-weight ratio, which makes it very light. This last property “is one measure most appreciated in bicycle frame builders and users; bamboo is particularly strong and light, even compared to the top materials in the industry, like carbon composite.” Because bamboo is a biobased material, it is susceptible to insects and weather damage. To increase their products’ lifespan, each pole is treated with Boron Salts, a natural insect repellent and preservative, and then covered with a thin layer of polyester resin. Such treatment December 2021

within the cycling industry and bicycle touring it isn’t well known.” In particular, customers “love the design and elegance of a bamboo bicycle”, and a number of eco-hotels and travel agencies in European countries have expressed interest in purchasing some.

The company currently buys their bamboo from a sourcing company in Spain, Bambusa, that imports bamboo from Colombia, China and Indonesia, but they have hopes of sourcing from Europe in future: “Our goal is to raise awareness of the

potential of bamboo and be part of the movement to grow bamboo in Europe.” Although bamboo bicycles are already being built in a number of countries, from China to Ghana, European customers are often surprised to hear about them: “In general, the bamboo bikes world is still a niche; even

INCREASING CARBON DIOXIDE IN THE ATMOSPHERE TEACHES OLD OAKS NEW TRICKS

T

he results, published in Tree Physiology, are the first to emerge from a giant outdoor experiment, led by the University of Birmingham in which an old oak forest is bathed in elevated levels of CO2. Over the first three years of a ten-year project, the 175-year-old oaks clearly responded to the CO2 by consistently increasing their rate of photosynthesis. Researchers are now measuring leaves, wood, roots, and soil to find out where the extra carbon captured ends up and for how long it stays locked up in the forest. The increase in photosynthesis was greatest in strong sunlight. The overall balance of key nutrient elements carbon and nitrogen did not change in the leaves. Keeping the carbon to nitrogen ratio constant suggests that the old trees have found ways of redirecting their elements, or found ways of bringing more nitrogen in from the soil to balance the carbon they are gaining from the air. The research was carried out at the Free-Air CO2 (FACE) facility of the Birmingham Page 18

Anna Gardner carrying out fieldwork in the forest canopy Institute of Forest Research (BIFoR) in close collaboration with colleagues from Western Sydney University who run a very similar experiment in old eucalyptus forest (EucFACE). BIFoR FACE and EucFACE are the world’s two largest experiments investigating the effect of global change on nature. Birmingham researcher Anna Gardner, who carried out the measurements, said “I’m really excited to contribute the first published science results to BIFoR FACE, an experiment of global importance. It was hard work conducting measurements at the top of a 25m oak day after day, but it was the only way to be sure how much extra the trees were photosynthesising.” Professor David Ellsworth, EucFACE lead scientist, said “Previous work at EucFACE measured photosynthesis increased by up to a fifth in increased carbon dioxide. So, we now know how old forest responds in the warmtemperate climate that we have here in Sydney, and the mild www.forestmachinemagazine.com

temperate climate of the northern middle latitudes where Birmingham sits. At EucFACE we found no additional growth in higher CO2, and it remains to be seen if that will be the case for BIFOR as well.” Professor Rob MacKenzie, founding Director of BIFoR, said “It’s a delight to see the first piece of the carbon jigsaw for BIFoR FACE fall into place. We are sure now that the old trees are responding to future carbon dioxide levels. How the entire forest ecosystem responds is a much bigger question requiring many more detailed investigations. We are now pushing ahead with those investigations.” The research is reported in full in the following open-access peer-reviewed journal article: Gardner A, Ellsworth DS, Crous KY, Pritchard J, MacKenzie A. COULD THERE BE DARK TIMES AHEAD? BY RAB EASTON

A

fter the feature I did on the Tesla Cybertruck, it set me thinking about where the extra electricity is going to come from to charge all of our electric vehicles once combustion engines are obsolete. At the end of March 2020 there were: 31.7 million cars, 4.1 million LGVs, 470,000 HGVs, 1.2 million motorbikes, 130,000 buses and 760,000 other types of licensed vehicles. That’s a total of 38.36 million vehicles in the UK. I agree that fewer emissions equate to lower Co² levels, and this has been proven to help to slow global warming, but somehow I think we are being hoodwinked. Sometimes facts and figures which appear online have been fudged to make a point or dramatise a situation, and I struggle to believe all I read in newspapers and on the news. I decided to do some digging myself, and the results I uncovered made for some eyebrow-lifting reading. After posting out the last issue, I had some spare time to spend on researching the above-mentioned subject, and there are large discrepancies in figures, but no matter which way you look at it, we have to buy electricity from overseas. Page 20

We do not produce enough electricity for our own use, and so we have to purchase electricity from The Netherlands, France and Ireland to supplement our shortfall. On paper we look good: most of our coal power stations have been closed, and only seven remaining nuclear power stations – five in England and two in Scotland – are in operation, all of which will be closed and decommissioned this decade. In total, 55% of our electricity comes from lowcarbon sources, including 24.8% from wind farms, 17.2% from nuclear power stations, 4.4% from solar, 6.5% from biomass, and 1.6% from hydroelectricity. Moreover, 36% comes from fossil fuel, mainly gas, and the 9% shortfall we purchase from overseas. It still sounds pretty good, but where will the electricity being supplied by nuclear power come from once the seven stations are finally decommissioned? Another interesting fact popped up during my search; in August and September this year, due to the lack of wind, we had a serious shortfall of electricity. Europe had insufficient resources to satisfy our demands, so we had to fire up some of our coal power www.forestmachinemagazine.com

stations temporarily! France has decommissioned its nuclear power stations, and to keep up with demand has had to re-commission four coalpowered electricity generating stations. The UK pretends to be going green with electricity and using it as a justification for losing jobs, yet at the same time is happy to purchase electricity from a foreign nation using coal and saving French miners’ jobs. The 10,973 wind farms around our coast and on the mainland produce 13.75% of our electricity needs, but wind turbines mounted on large concrete bases like those on wind farms take up to 20 years to become carbon neutral. The lifespan of a wind turbine is 25 years. There has been a lot of coverage of “The Toxic Filth” caused by green energy. Over a thousand 45 to 70m turbine blades weighing 10-25 tonnes each have been hacked up by power saws into transportable sizes, making their way to a large landfill in the US state of Wyoming. Lake Mills in Iowa and Sioux Falls in South Dakota have been accepting discarded blades for landfill. These blades are not bio-degradable, as they are December 2021

made from fibreglass composite, including the toxic Bisphenol A, which is so dangerous to health that it is banned in Canada and the EU. A total of 8,000 blades are decommissioned in the US each year; some are buried at US landfill sites, some are crushed and mixed with concrete to form new bases (this is expensive, as the blades must be strong enough to withstand hurricane winds), and the remainder are shipped to African landfills. In the UK over 14,000 composite fibreglass turbine blades will reach the end of their usable life in the next three years, and this will give rise to the need for man power, tools, cranes, lorries etc. to remove, refit, transport, and dispose of the blades, as well as to manufacture new blades. “With an average lifespan of 20-25 years, many of the world’s wind turbines installed during the 1990s and early 2000s are now reaching the end of their life expectancy. This raises the question of what happens to them next? Whilst they are excellent producers of green energy, challenges arise when it comes time for their decommissioning, due to the current lack of planning for

December 2021

disposal, decarbonisation and potential reuse of components. Despite around 80-85% of the weight of a wind turbine being recyclable, turbine blades still represent a significant challenge to the environment, for which the industry is working hard to find a solution.” When you read all of this and see the visual impact which wind turbines have on some of the UK’s most beautiful scenery, as well as their adverse effect on birds and bats and the noise pollution they cause, it makes you stop and think. Many forests are being cleared to make way for the turbines, and this is further reducing our already-depleted timber reserves. Turbines supply less than 14% of our electricity needs; their energy is stored in batteries

www.forestmachinemagazine.com

(Whitelee has 215 turbines and a super battery half the size of a football pitch) and they can only operate at wind speeds of over 5mph and at less than 35mph. On calm or strong windy days we will still need fossil fuels to back up our lack of electricity supply or will have to rely on our European neighbours to keep the lights on. Solar panels are no better once discarded, as they are a toxic cocktail of gallium arsenide, tellurium silver, crystalline silicon, lead, cadmium and heavy earth material. I don’t know what the solution is,

Page 21

NEWS and so far I have seen nothing from the government to reassure us that they have plans in place to cope with the extra demand that all electric vehicles will bring. The UK plans to pass legislation that will see EV home and workplace chargers being switched off at peak times to avoid blackouts. Grant Shapps, Transport Secretary, announced the proposed law, which stipulates that electric car chargers installed at home or at the workplace must not function for up to nine hours a day to avoid overloading the national electricity grid. The UK government believes these measures will help avoid putting the electricity grid under stress at times of peak demand, potentially preventing blackouts Public and rapid chargers

on motorways and A-roads however, will be exempt. Another point worth considering is the population rise in the UK. In 2011 the figure stood at 63 million, increasing in 2021 to 68.25 million, and by 2060 the population is predicted to stand at 75 million. The UK is expected to surpass the population of Germany in 2080. I’m not sure, but perhaps they have the attitude of Formula 1 legend Ayton Senna when driving his team principal Ron Dennis home one evening. As they were approaching a roundabout at well over 120mph, Ron Dennis said “don’t you think we are going too fast?”, to which Ayton replied “don’t worry, with a bit of luck I will sort it out when we get there.”

SCOTLAND SHOWING LEADERSHIP ON CLIMATE FORESTS

S

cotland’s ambitious woodland creation targets, which will see 36 million new trees planted each year, are key to tackling climate change and nature loss, says Environment Minister Màiri McAllan. Speaking ahead of COP26’s Glasgow Declaration of Forests and Land Use (on 2 November), Ms McAllan highlighted that in the UK, 80% of all new tree planting takes place in Scotland. Scotland has raised the bar on tackling climate change through tree planting by increasing its yearly targets from 12,000 hectares to 18,000 hectares of new woodland each year by 2024/5. Ms McAllan said that Scotland now stands ready to share its forestry success story with world leaders visiting Glasgow. She said: “Climate change and nature loss are the

greatest global threats we face. We can and must start to reverse these threats. Planting more trees, and sustainably managing our forests is one part of the global solution. By planting the right trees in the right place we can soak up more emissions, whilst also providing a boost to our environment, our economy, and the lives of people. As we welcome world leaders to Scotland, we extend an open invitation to share our success story so that other nations can grow and protect their own forests and woodlands.” The Scottish achievements in tree planting have largely been achieved by working closely with the forest industries and woodland owners, both large and small. The Scottish Government is also pumping £150 million into meeting Scotland’s enhanced planting

targets and ensuring there is capacity in tree nurseries. Scotland’s forests are an important part of the country’s climate change ambitions as they absorb around 6.2 million tonnes of CO2, equivalent to almost 10% of Scotland’s gross GHG emissions. Scotland’s forests and woodlands cover around 1.45 million hectares, which is 19 per cent of the country’s land area. These forests are home to 172 protected species, generate £1 billion to the economy each year and support 25,000 jobs. The Scottish Government is committed to increasing the amount of Scottish timber going into construction from 2.2 million cubic meters (2018) to 2.6 million cubic meters in 2021/2022. Using timber locks away the carbon for the lifetime of the building. wwwforestry.gov.scot

omatsu Forest is introducing the Komatsu X164E, a robust head specially developed for efficient eucalyptus harvesting. A highperformance feed system ensures high productivity which, combined with smart solutions for reducing maintenance time

and costs, makes the X164E a profitable head. The standout feature is the fact that the conventional chainsaw is replaced by hydraulic shears, which also benefit production and safety, such as with the absence of a chain to maintain. With its brand-new design,

the Komatsu X164E has been specially developed to efficiently harvest eucalyptus. When developing this head, Komatsu Forest’s engineering team put aside all existing head designs for softwood trees and instead focused solely on the needs and conditions of eucalyptus

CRANAB HAS DEVELOPED AN ALL-NEW CRANE FOR VIMEK NEXT GENERATION

ranab has developed an all-new crane for Vimek Next Generation. The crane has been developed to be the perfect match for the new forwarder and has already received very positive feedback from users. “It’s great to be able to kick off our new generation of machines with this new crane model as standard. The older models are Page 24

getting a bit long in the tooth now and do not really offer the crane experience we were looking for”, says Johannes Nilsson, CEO Vimek. The crane’s characteristics and geometry are similar to Cranab’s larger, more modern cranes, but the FC4 is a more compact design, specially developed for Vimek Next Generation. “We have worked on developing www.forestmachinemagazine.com

a good crane solution for Vimek’s new forwarders for some time. We try to collaborate with companies within the Cranab Group as much as possible, and it is fantastic that Cranab will be a supplier to a sister company with the introduction of the new crane on Vimek’s forwarders”, says Anders Strömgren, CEO of Cranab. www.vimek.com December 2021

harvesting. “To minimise losses in production time, we established strict requirements for the debarking function. With the Komatsu X164E, the ambition is for at least half of the stems to need only be fed through once, from felling cut to the end of the stem, also known as one-pass debarking,” says Tobias Ettemo, Product Manager at Komatsu Forest. The effective debarking is due in part to the head’s specially designed feed system, which has a very high degree of contact between the debarking knives and the stem. The design is based on four angled feed rollers which cause the stem to rotate inside the feed path, efficiently debarking and delimbing the stem at the same time. The head also shreds the bark into shorter lengths, minimising process disruptions at sawmills and greatly benefiting the growth of new stands. The main difference

compared to Komatsu’s other heads is that the X164E slices rather than saws through the stem. The head is equipped with extremely powerful hydraulic shears, with broad, sturdy blades, that easily and effectively slice through each stem. “This solution reduces service and maintenance costs, including downtime, while the hydraulic shears also offer great advantages in terms of machine and operator safety,” says Tobias Ettemo.

replace, and no need for saw lubrication either. The Komatsu X164E can be mounted on an excavator or a wheeled machine.

For excellent reliability, the Komatsu X164E is equipped with several smart solutions, such as protected hose routing all the way from crane tip to head valve and from head valve to roller motors. This means less downtime and reduced spare parts costs, greatly boosting profitability. The underlying concept of using hydraulic shears instead of a saw bar also helps to keep maintenance costs down, as there are no chains, bars, sprockets or saw motors to

With the Komatsu X164E, eucalyptus harvesting is taking an innovative step forward. New technology combined with a robust design and wellproven advantages result in a head that truly comes into its own in demanding plantation environments. Add to this the smart solutions for improved reliability, such as the protected hose routing, and the Komatsu X164E is clearly a highly profitable alternative. www.komatsu.com

“All the development that we have put into this new head had the primary focus to reduce the total cost of ownership, that is what really matters in the end. And we are very happy to say that we have seen proof of substantial reduction of TCO with the X164E.” Ettemo concludes.

For these situations, our forest trailers Gripto 1009 and 1010, are just perfect. You see, they are made for demanding conditions. So how far do the cranes reach? Gripto 1010, the crane with the longest reach, stretches to a remarkable 10 meters, while Gripto 1009 comes close after with a solid 8,5 meters. A GENTLE APPROACH BY RAB EASTON

M

ike Tyson, of Low Impact Forestry Ltd, offers his clients an environmentally-friendly approach to sustainable timber harvesting by using his two Logbullet low-impact mini forwarders for extracting felled and cross-cut timber from stump to roadside. The Logbullet is a Finnish mini forwarder made by the company Porttivouri Oy, which is owned by Pekka Syvanen, who was awarded his Masters degree in engineering by Helsinki University in 2004. It is an 8WD

December 2021

hydrostatically-driven forwarder which is 5m long, 1.55m wide and weighs 1,700kg. It has a payload of 1,700kg and will travel at speeds of up to 5km/hr. While thinning timber in his own forest in 2011 with an ATV and forwarder trailer, Pekka realised that, although it was a low-impact machine, reversing was very difficult on the uneven forestry ground. He decided that he would design and build a cost-effective, low-impact machine in his spare time. There was a lot of trial and error involved in the process,

www.forestmachinemagazine.com

but the first ever Logbullet left his workshop in 2015. The Logbullets have since proven popular, with 66 units made to date. Production for the next 12 months will see a further 20 machines manufactured. So far, sales have been to Finland, Sweden, the Czech Republic, France, Estonia, Latvia, Germany, Switzerland, the UK, Canada, and the US, while one of the Logbullets on order will be sold in Ireland. The waiting time on a new Logbullet is approximately three to four months from order to delivery.

“I come from a farming background and grew up operating agricultural machinery which I loved; in 2012 I embarked on a career in tree surgery and forestry and spent eight years working as a selfemployed groundsman.”

Low-impact smaller-scale forestry, similar to what Mike was carrying out, is a specialised method of timber extraction which attracts far less attention on social media compared to large-scale harvesting operations, and so I was interested to find out how Mike first heard about it and why he decided to go down this route.

“In 2018 I had an operation on my shoulder and realised I needed a change within the industry where the work I was carrying out would have a lesser impact on my body. I decided to carry out some research on low-impact forestry extraction equipment as I could see a niche in the market for thinning smaller stands of timber without causing disturbance to the

ground.” “Thinning out small woodlands and shelter belts yields limited volumes of timber and is financially uneconomical for contractors with larger equipment to consider. I could see this working for me by using smaller extraction equipment which could be transported legally and cheaply on a trailer towed behind my 4WD.” In 2018, after looking at the many options for small-scale, low-impact forwarders, Mike discovered Jonathan Robinson from Devon on the social media platform Arbtalk. Jonathan had purchased the first Logbullet in the UK, and after reading his blog posts and messaging backwards and forwards, Mike decided to visit him in January so that he could see the Logbullet working for himself. The Logbullet ticked all the boxes for Mike, and as there were no UK distributors, Mike contacted Pekka at Porttivouri Oy to order the Logbullet forwarder, which was delivered in April 2019. Over two years on and Mike is still convinced he made the right decision, so much so that he is the only contractor in the world

to own two Logbullets. The second Logbullet he purchased second-hand from Jonathan Robinson, as he was upgrading to a slightly larger capacity low-impact forwarder. Jonathan offered Mike first refusal, and although it was a substantial investment, a backup machine was too good an opportunity to pass up as, up until that point, he had never seen a used Logbullet available for sale. I caught up with Mike in late September when he was just over half way through the job; approximately 200 tonnes was being removed and Mike was extracting 3m lengths of Ash which were being felled, x-cut and stacked by his two selfemployed chainsaw operators. He subcontracts the felling to between two and four chainsaw operators depending on extraction distance, species and size of the trees that are being thinned. He still likes to keep his hand in with felling and fills in whenever needed. I asked Mike if he would eventually go down the mechanised harvesting route: “Our system works well with the hand cutters and lightweight forwarder; fully loaded it is just over three tonnes with the weight distributed evenly over the eight wheels. Finding an uncomplicated and reliable harvester with a similarly light footprint is very difficult.” “The Logbullet has a simple, uncomplicated design with many of the components ‘off the shelf’; any other parts which are December 2021

Ground clearance is not just a small area in the middle of the machine, but a large area to easily facilitate driving over obstacles. manufactured by Porttivouri Oy arrive from Finland within 48 hours. I was a little concerned over spare parts to begin with, as there was no UK distributor, but Pekka has been fantastic, really helpful on the phone with prompt despatching of any parts I have needed.” I got the chance to have a good look around both Logbullets and was impressed with the build quality and thought that had gone into them. forward and reverse drive are on a single four-way joystick on the right hand side of the rotating seat and the two lever crane controls are mechanical for main lift, dipper slew and rotator, with four electric buttons on each joystick for stabilising legs up and down, as well as extension and grapple operation. There is a useful radiocontrolled winch mounted on the side of the main boom of Page 29

HARVESTING the Farma Crane with 30m of wire rope and 600kg of pulling power. This is ideal for gathering in trees on a steep bank or awkward/very wet areas that could cause problems. Mike opted for the larger Farma 4,2 G2 crane and 0.21 grapple rather than the standard 3,8 G2 crane; the larger crane has almost half a metre more reach with the addition of the dipper extension, which is useful when working in thinnings. Ground clearance is generous for a small machine at 40cm, with the under body smooth so that it will slide over protruding obstacles without hanking. “The secret is having good cutters” admitted Mike, before continuing by stating that “keeping stumps low and uncovering any hidden obstacles so I can see them is a great help in minimising damage to the forwarder and getting good steady production.” Mike has added a few bits of extra protection, including a headboard extension for loading the bunk slightly higher when wood is light and some branch deflectors on the hydraulic motors on each bogie to protect the hydraulic hoses and fittings. He has added fire extinguishers to the forwarders, as well as front bumper bars, chainsaw holders and front branch deflectors running from the roof at an angle to the front of the bonnet. One other handy addition is the strapped on roof box for storing tools and bits and pieces; machines seldom break down at the roadside next to everything you need to repair Page 30

them

☺.

Each bogie has its own hydraulic motor with a sprocket and chain for drive; these have proved very reliable and trouble-free, when the chains are kept correctly tensioned. Mike has band tracks which can be fitted for even lower ground pressure when working in wet swampy ground conditions. I got the chance to try the Logbullet myself and found the crane smooth and precise, with the crane levers easy to use. There are no windows, and instead just a tube on each corner with a plastic roof attached, meaning that vision is excellent; Mike has added LED lighting blocks to the back and front for extra illumination on dull days when dealing with tightly-spaced crops, and on shorter winter days. The Logbullet is powered by a Kubota V1505 four-cylinder diesel 25hp engine which is smooth and quiet, works all the hydraulic functions, and drives at very low revs. Mike averages around 18-20 tonnes per day, although one day he managed an impressive 36 tonnes on a relatively short extraction distance. Fuel consumption is incredible with the Logbullet, using just 10-12 litres of diesel per day, roughly equating to ½ litre per tonne. This is a light, well-balanced mini forwarder with responsive steering, making it ideal for manoeuvring in tightly-spaced crops; it is so light that it hardly left a mark on the ground. Having used the original www.forestmachinemagazine.com

Logbullet for over 1,500 hours, I was interested to find out if there had been any recurring problems. “I have replaced two centre joints and a bogie bearing but this was down to my own naivety; I was loading it with too much timber thinking that this would improve production, but in reality it had a completely detrimental effect. I soon realised that carrying just over a tonne on each load was the way forward; little and often works brilliantly and I have had no issues with reliability since.” “Changing the centre joint isn’t a major operation on the Logbullet with it being small and light; losing the skin on my knuckles due to the close confinement of the nuts and bolts was the worst part of it” laughed Mike. “It took two days for the centre joint to arrive from Finland and just a few hours’ labour to replace it, so there was minimal disruption to production.” Word soon spread of his lowimpact approach to harvesting timber and the ability this gives working in densely-planted areas that would previously have been almost impossible or uneconomical to extract from, and he has found his two Logbullets and felling squad very much in demand. About half of his harvesting work is for the Zetland Estate, and Mike has a great working relationship with the forester Shaun PurkissMcEndoo. The rest of the time he works for Raby and Croft Estates, Stockton Woodland Trust and smaller privatelyDecember 2021

owned woodlands. Mike lives in Richmond and will travel 90 minutes in all directions from his home to work; this includes County Durham and Cumbria, as well as North, South and East Yorkshire. Mike had a timber lorry coming in the next day, so I followed him in and out for a few loads and the forwarder was not leaving a mark on the ground; it was a little over 150m extraction distance from the felling area to the roadside (just over half way through the job) and he was averaging over three loads an hour. The Logbullet was very stable when loading and travelling, and was rapid across the ground; it was reasonably firm soil and fairly flat. All the stumps had been cut nice and low and brash had been chopped up by the cutters to prevent any hindrance as they went along. Mike works to a very high standard and the overall forest’s health will improve greatly from being properly managed; it is aesthetically pleasing to see an airy, well-managed woodland that people can enjoy rather than looking at a dense overgrown jungle. Forests need to be thinned to increase the value of the remaining crop and the low impact system Mike is using, with minimal transport costs, allows them to get a return on their timber to pay for having the work carried out. Previously, many of these areas would have been either cut to waste at a substantial loss, or left to fend for themselves as overgrown scrubland. www.lowimpactforestry.ltd December 2021

The combination of a lightweight forwarder and experienced cutters is not just an ecological friendly alternative to traditional forestry methods but it improves the overall look and health of a forest.

THE BATTERIES THAT CAN ELECTRIFY FORESTRY

E

lectrification of work machines in agriculture and forestry requires both electrically powered machines and a cost-effective way of giving the machines access to electrical energy. In a project led by the research institute RISE, a modular battery replacement system and electric machines for agriculture and forestry will be developed and demonstrated. The machines in which the battery system will be tested are unique in themselves: The electric forest machine will probably be the first of its kind in the world and the electric autonomous agricultural machine will be among the first of this size in the world. “With the replaceable batteries, the owner of an agricultural machine would be able to rent the battery when needed, such as for spring farming or other work peaks. Because the same batteries can also be used by other industries with reverse season, such as battery-powered machines for snow removal, the utilization of the batteries can be increased and the costs for the owners reduced,” says Jonas Engström, project manager for the project and operations manager for Testbed digital agriculture at RISE. Page 34

To reduce fossil fuel dependence in industries such as agriculture and forestry, several different alternative solutions will be needed. One of them is a conversion to electric work machines. The change is hindered by the fact that the established solutions for batteries and charging are limited and insufficient for a large-scale implementation. The fact that the use of many work machines is seasonal also constitutes an obstacle to the transition to electric operation. If such a machine is to be electrified, the cost of sufficient battery capacity will be too great. In addition, the work machines are usually manufactured in small series and if each manufacturer is to develop its own battery system, the development costs constitute a major obstacle to electrification of work machines. A newly started project coordinated by RISE, Research Institutes of Sweden, has as a long-term goal to come up with a modular battery replacement system that enables industries such as agriculture and forestry to be electrified. The system also meets the need for many work machines to be seasonal and the battery modules can www.forestmachinemagazine.com

therefore be used for other purposes. In addition, it also makes it possible for smaller machine manufacturers to have access to key technology for electrification that otherwise entails large development costs. The project strengthens the Swedish automotive industry’s international competitiveness by developing, applying and demonstrating new energyefficient and fossil-free key technology for electric work machines. The project includes investigating how the modular battery system can be spread to other industries and scaled up and also form a basis for increased attractiveness and equality for both manufacturers and users of work machines. The project builds on previous research results and further develops a modular battery replacement system for passenger cars to be used for work machines. At RISE test bed for digital agriculture, which RISE and partners operate at Ultuna outside Uppsala, new technology for agriculture is developed and tested. This project complements the test bed and is an important building block for getting started with autonomous and electric machines in Swedish December 2021

agriculture. “In the test bed, we test, among other things, how new autonomous and electrified machine systems can be used in agriculture. Here we are already working on a prototype for a driverless electric tractor, Drever 120, which is the machine we will demonstrate the battery replacement system with,” says Jonas Engström.

The battery system will also be demonstrated in a forestry machine that is electrified in the project. It is a combi machine that works both as a harvester and forwarder from Malwa Forest AB and will be the first of its kind in the world. RISE leads the project which involves a broad constellation of large companies, SMEs, startups, research institutes, OEMs and subcontractors. The project is funded by the parties and FFI Vehicle Strategic Research and Innovation through Vinnova. THE PROJECT INCLUDES: • Development of a battery replacement system for work machines based on innovations from Powerswap AB and components from Micropower AB • Completion of a prototype for an autonomous electric agricultural machine from Traktorarvid AB with components from Regal Components AB and Micropower AB, as well as control systems with open source code from RISE. The machine weighs 5 tons and has an output of 120 kW and is large enough to perform heavy work such as December 2021

FORESTRY PARTS DIRECT LTD BY RAB EASTON

I

t was just over 16 months ago that Peter Williamson Jnr launched his new business, Forestry Parts Direct (FPD) Ltd. Peter has been a professional harvester operator for many years and understands that harvesting contractors need good quality replacement parts for their machinery ASAP and at the best possible price. The first products Peter stocked came from the Estonian company Balmec, whose product range includes feed rollers, de-limbing knives, roller arms, hydraulic cylinders, crane racks, Page 36

measuring wheels, and many more parts for companies including John Deere, Ponsse, Komatsu, Waratah, Rottne and Log Max. Balmec have been trading since 2007 and have established a solid reputation for quality and hard-wearing replacement parts with warranty at a reasonable price. Peter first heard about Balmec when he was trialling their measuring wheels on his John Deere 1470 Harvester for FMM and was so impressed that he approached Balmec about becoming their UK distributor. www.forestmachinemagazine.com

Locating premises was the next step, and he found a secure unit near the Creighton in Dumfries which was ideal for his purposes. Balmec offer a no quibble guarantee on all their parts, including a oneyear unlimited hours warranty on all their de-limbing knives and a two-year unlimited hours warranty on all their feed rollers. The Balmec replacement parts were an instant success, and his customers were delighted with the quality, service and price from FPD. Prior to the Brexit December 2021

Blue Guide Bars for FMM with great success, he met with Iain Lawrence of Iggesund Forest. This resulted in FPD being appointed the UK’s independent distributor for Iggesund Forest’s products. One of the bars he tested had harvested in excess of 7,000m³, with all the others he trialled exceeding the normal life expectancy of a guide bar.

Peter has since increased his product range so that he can better serve his customer base, and this includes the Iggesund Forest range of products. After trialling the Iggesund

Peter also tested the harvester chains on his harvester before committing to them, and was again very pleased with the results, so the chains were added to his product range. Peter has sourced more products from other good suppliers and can now offer filter and service kits for all makes and models of forestry machines, as well as crane cable for John Deere harvesters, Hultdins bar clamps and saw swings, encoder cable, window wiper blade systems for John Deere E and G series models, and almost all mechanical, electrical and hydraulic parts for John Deere machines. Another popular line which is held in stock is timber marker paint. Like many businesses sourcing

their products from overseas, Brexit was a nightmare to negotiate initially, but Peter’s deliveries are running smoothly and regularly, albeit a little slower due to clearing times at UK customs. He tries to hold all popular items in stock where possible and works hard so that his customers have a good experience and will keep returning. If items are not in stock, Peter can give his customers a delivery date and will keep them up to date on the progress of their order. As a hands-on and experienced machine operator, Peter is in a position to offer help and advice over the phone to his customers so that they can be reassured that the part they order is the part that is needed to get them up and running. He is looking to progress to having a wellstocked retail outlet close to the A74M where customers have the option of calling in to collect the parts they need off the shelf. www.forestrypartsdirect.com Read all about the trials with the new Iggesund Blue Line 3/4” Vyking Bar on page 78.

ack in 1999 I took delivery of a shiny new Valmet 860 S2. My first job was on an extremely steep site just outside of Moffat, South East of Cornel Burn. Nine long drifts, around 100m in length, holding over 400m³, could be extracted uphill to the top, but there was around 250m³ in the middle on the severest part of the slope. To extract this, you had to start at the top and travel along the full drift as it was too

Page 38

steep for the forwarder to reverse up from the bottom. Once unloaded at the bottom you had about one and a half miles round trip on the forest road to get back up to the top. The middle section was bloody exciting though, the forwarder wanted to go skiing and getting it to sit still to load meant you had to be gentle on the crane controls. Normally it would have been fine, half a load on the steep and top off on the flatter area, but some twit, who

www.forestmachinemagazine.com

had been in before me, had nabbed the top and bottom of many of the drifts, so I was left with a fair bit of clearing up, so as you can imagine not a high production site. Luckily I was being paid a decent rate to compensate for the longer haul so was quite happy at my work. I had quite a few twitchy bum moments when the forwarder started sliding and gaining momentum, the only option was to floor the throttle, keep it pointing downhill and

hope it caught up with itself eventually. It was near Christmas with short daylight hours so I would try and get as many loads done through the day to get a feel for the ground before working in the dark. All was going well and by putting long hours in I was managing reasonable production. Wednesday evening’s saw both Mick, the harvester operator, and I shaved and shampooed before heading to Moffat for some grub and a few pints at the Buccleuch hotel. While having our tea we couldn’t help hearing that everyone was talking about the UFO sightings behind Moffat. The alien visitors had been spotted over

a number of days and the locals were very uneasy over this, even the local newspaper, the Moffat News, had run a story on it. We were quite worried as we were staying in caravans up in the forest and really didn’t fancy being abducted by aliens before Christmas! We had seen nothing untoward while at work and asked where the sightings had taken place; there had been none that evening but one of the locals pointed out the general direction of where they had been spotted. We grew even more worried as this was not a million miles away from where we were working and once back in the forest sleep didn’t come easy! The rest of the week passed without incident and as we had not seen anything we started to feel a bit more relaxed.

hose so he set off to the local hydraulic shop to get a new one made, returning just before five. As he drove through Moffat he glimpsed his first sighting of the UFO that everyone was talking about. Fascinated, he stopped to watch it, the UFO kept dropping out of the sky, hovering at a lower altitude before moving a short distance then disappearing. After about 10 minutes it would reappear much higher before repeating the exact movements again. Mick couldn’t help but burst out laughing when he realised it was me on the forwarder. As far as I am aware, the people of Moffat have never discovered the truth behind their UFO sightings.

The following Tuesday afternoon Mick burst his main feed

TREE MAINTENANCE MADE EASY - WORKING SAFELY WITH TREE CARE HANDLERS With a growing proportion of high-risk timber handling, occupational safety is of great importance for service providers and municipalities, particularly in tree maintenance and problem tree felling. Modern machine concepts like the 728 E offer a gentle and efficient, but above all safe alternative to manual tree maintenance.

The necessary power is provided by a powerful Stage V diesel engine with 140 kW, which reliably drives the two hydraulic circuits. Like all SENNEBOGEN tree care handlers, the 728 E comes with a separate, generously dimensioned auxiliary hydraulic system for independent operation of the attachments as standard. Depending on the intended use, the machine can be operated with a grapple saw, mulcher, cutting unit and more.

It’s impressive what a skilled operator can do with the SENNEBOGEN 728 tree care handler with a reach of 21m. Thanks to the long range, powerful hydraulics for a wide range of attachments and the mobile undercarriage, the 728 E is unbeatably fast in landscape maintenance and fuel timber harvesting, with a constant focus on “safety first”.

INNOVATIVE PROJECTS TO BOOST UK BIOMASS PRODUCTION

I

t was recently announced that 24 innovative projects will receive funding of up to £200,000 from the government’s Biomass Feedstocks Innovation Programme. The suite of BEISfunded projects will underpin the development of knowledge to boost biomass productivity in the UK, through landscape planning, breeding, planting, cultivating and harvesting of organic energy materials. Forest Research has been successful in winning funding from the programme as part of a collaboration led by Forest Creation Partners (FCP). The partnership will use geospatial data science to identify optimal planting sites for forestrybased biomass production, integrating the Forest Research Ecological Site Classification (ESC) decision support tool for species suitability with FCP spatial constraints data. FCP’s ForestFounder system combines a wide range of geospatial data to identify optimal sites for productive forestry. Because ForestFounder can scan almost unlimited areas algorithmically, it provides a unique capability to unlock investment in biomass production, by helping landowners decide where and what to plant within their estates and advising investors on optimal sites to acquire or lease for planting. The project will expand ForestFounder’s Page 44

geographical coverage from England to Great Britain and provide additional species options for Short Rotation Coppice (SRC) and Short Rotation Forestry (SRF). It will also improve its ability to account for future climate change in its species recommendations. This could greatly enhance the potential

for British biomass production by increasing the number and variety of sites available. As part of this work, Forest Research will update its open species suitability datasets to incorporate likely drought constraints, updating its Ecological Site Classification decision support system and will publish the new datasets on the climatic suitability of SRC and SRF species across Great Britain. The work will also identify the potential for updating risks by utilising UKCP18 climate projections. www.forestresearch.gov.uk

T

he beginning of September saw the start of the Fuelwood Open Day season. The first of the three events was at Markus Arden’s “Woodwater Farm” in Devon, the home of Fuelwood’s dealer for the South West of England. The South West Dealer Open Days have been a regular event on the Fuelwood show calendar since 2016 and have continued Page 46

to grow steadily in popularity and attendance - this year was again higher than previous years. After many long days transporting the machinery to Devon the two day event took place on Friday 10th and Saturday 11th September. The event in Warwick, Thursday 23rd, Friday 24th and Saturday 25th September followed by Fuelwood Scotland Open www.forestmachinemagazine.com

Day events on Friday 8th and Saturday 9th October. An impressive selection from across the Uniforest range was on display at Woodwater Farm. Uniforest manufacture a range of firewood processors, forestry winches, grapples, attachments and accessories to suit. The introduction of this range, two years ago, was an obvious December 2021

Fuelwood Open Days are an excellent opportunity to see kindling, firewood and related commercial machinery operating in an as-near-as-possible working environment. Friendly and knowledgeable staff are on-hand to share a wealth of knowledge and expertise to help customers arrive at the right decision when considering a new piece of equipment. All machinery is demonstrated in a controlled and safe working environment, and many visitors are able to try machinery out for themselves. The ideal opportunity if you’re looking for reassurance about your next purchase.

progression for both Companies. The Uniforest attachments and grapples sit alongside those already offered by Fuelwood The large firewood processors compliment the existing Japa and Fuelwood ranges and the forestry winches filled a gap in their offerings. The Uniforest Titan 40-20 kept producing firewood throughout December 2021

the event. The 16 inch capacity cut of the TCT circular saw effortlessly sliced timber up to maximum diameter, into 8 inch rings, that were then split through 2,4,6,8 or 12 way blades to create perfect sized logs. The reaction it received from visitors was very encouraging for future sales of this machine. The robust build quality of the machine, its www.forestmachinemagazine.com

ability to feed maximum diameter logs, even those with a twist and a union in them, and the speed at which it can produce logs, (8 minutes for a metre cubed bulk bag) sets this machine as one of the best firewood processors currently on the market for UK timber. Several forestry winches from across the 3.5 tonne to 12.5 Page 47

BIO-ENERGY tonne Uniforest range were also on display, some manually operated, some electro hydraulically operated and some gear driven. The range is very comprehensive. Neal Hussey, Uniforest product specialist for Fuelwood, said: “…it’s great to have such a good selection of winches to bring down. We have plenty of stock to be able to choose from. They are proving very popular amongst the customers who have bought them, surpassing their expectations…”

Uniforest grapple attachments for tractors and/or front loaders offer a vast array of handling solutions. The RK260 felling head was attached to Fuelwood’s own Wacker Neuson 9 tonne excavator, which is one

of their latest investments. Fuelwood’s M.D., Jeremy Slatem, said “…excavator attachments are becoming more popular and our range is getting increasingly bigger so we had to invest in our own machine to be able to demonstrate the attachments. he Fuelwood Scotland Open Days were a great chance to see a wide range of the latest Forestry and Firewood machinery available on working display. Treeline Woodlands is a slick, well-run family company with 11 full time employees and two subcontractors helping with the running of the business. Page 50

There was sufficient staff on hand at the October open days, between the Treeline and Fuelwood team, to offer customers a first-class experience. Treeline Woodlands was established in 1991 by Gavin and Elaine Marshall. Gavin had been a forester with the www.forestmachinemagazine.com

Economic Forestry Group prior to this, but had wanted to offer clients a personal and comprehensive forestry service which included grant applications, fencing, planting, spraying, weed suppression and tree surgery. Nick Marshall joined his parents in the company in 2011 and immediately saw the potential December 2021

of adding low-impact timber harvesting to their range of services. Nick has since married, and his wife Anna juggles her time between looking after two young children and helping in the running of the business. Nick researched the smallerscale harvesting equipment in use before finally deciding on December 2021

a Malwa 560F 6WD Forwarder, purchased new in 2014, and a Hyundai 145LCR-9 15-tonne excavator with a Kesla 25RHS harvesting head. The aim was to offer clients a low-impact silvicultural thinning programme which would improve the health of the forest while adding value to the remaining crop. The Malwa forwarder ticked all www.forestmachinemagazine.com

the boxes; it was lightweight at just over 11 tonnes when loaded (Payload of 5,500kg), and 1.95m wide on 500 tyres with a steering angle of +/45°. For longer hauls Nick uses a four-wheel drag trailer which increases the payload but not the ground pressure. Nick prefers the six-wheel configuration of the Malwa Page 51

NEW SUSTAINABLE HYBRID SANDWICH ELEMENTS COMBINE CONCRETE AND WOOD

H

ybrid construction offers construction companies a more sustainable way of building without changing their current building methods. Metsä Wood and its partners have designed a hybrid sandwich wall element, which will renew off-site construction. The innovation combines concrete with Kerto® LVL (laminated veneer lumber). The lighter weight of the hybrid sandwich wall elements proved to be a valuable benefit in the first construction project at Metsä Fibre’s Rauma sawmill. HYBRID CONSTRUCTION WILL INCREASE SUSTAINABILITY Skanska, the constructor of Page 56

Metsä Fibre’s new Rauma sawmill, has set up ambitious goal for itself as it aims to be carbon neutral globally by 2045. This has led the company to provide low-carbon or carbon neutral life-time solutions to its customers. “We are happy to try new, innovative things and partnerships, and the use of these new hybrid sandwich elements in the new Rauma sawmill is a great example of this kind of cooperation. The use of hybrid elements reduces the amount of concrete, and the elements are also lighter than typical elements,” says Ilkka Romo, Director of the www.forestmachinemagazine.com

Productivity and Quality Unit at Skanska. Romo foresees that wood construction will increase over the next couple of years, and there is already now more demand. The forms of wood construction and their impact on business and customer wishes are under review. “The hybrid sandwich element is a great start, and the Rauma sawmill project has provided us with useful first-hand information about their use in construction. It seems to fit well with our technical needs. Our cooperation with Metsä Wood and Metsä Fibre has started well December 2021

thanks to the deep expertise of these two companies,” says Romo. THE ELEMENT PRODUCTIONS EASY The production of the new hybrid sandwich wall elements, which are used in the sawmill’s log sorting building, went as planned at the pre-cast element manufacturer Lipa-Betoni’s factory. This is the first time the factory produced hybrid wall elements. In the production of a hybrid sandwich wall element, a Kerto LVL panel forms the loadbearing core. This is followed by an insulation layer and reinforced concrete facade. “After overcoming the initial challenges, the production of

the hybrid sandwich wall elements has been as easy as the production of concrete sandwich elements. We have succeeded in this thanks to the close cooperation with and extensive know-how of our partners,” says Satu Lipsanen, CEO of Lipa-Betoni. SMOOTH INSTALLATION OF HYBRID SANDWICH ELEMENTS AT THE CONSTRUCTION SITE The installation of the hybrid sandwich wall elements for the first floor, 100m², of the building took five hours. “The assembly of the hybrid sandwich wall elements has been similar to the usual concrete sandwich elements. We were able to use a lighter crane in the assembly as the hybrid

sandwich wall elements are lighter than traditional sandwich elements. Their lighter weight can bring savings in a large construction project,” says Petri Puputti, Construction Manager, Skanska. Both kinds of elements have identical connections in the bottom, and the seams of the hybrid sandwich elements have timber screws. He also highlights that after the assembly of hybrid sandwich wall elements, the seams are finished and there is no need to do seaming, concrete grinding or cleaning, as is the case with concrete sandwich panels. The sorting building will be ready by the end of 2021. The sawmill is planned to be ready in Q3 2022. www.metsawood.com

not commercially available, engineers expect that valuable insights from the LX03 will feed into applications for today and tomorrow. Inspired by a concept devised by Volvo CE and LEGO® Technic engineers and designers, the Volvo LX03 is a remarkable milestone breaking new grounds in smart construction technology. It represents both the next stage in Volvo CE’s exploration into machine intelligence and its determination to decarbonize the construction industry. Melker Jernberg, President of Volvo CE, says: “We need to transform the construction industry with smart and more sustainable solutions that will have an impact on a global scale. The unveiling of the LX03 prototype today represents just that – and is testament to the incredible expertise of our engineers and our united commitment towards positive change. Together with the LEGO Group, we are pushing the boundaries of both technology and imagination and the result is beyond anything the world has seen before.” Page 58

Lars Stenqvist, Chief Technology Officer of Volvo Group, says “As transport and infrastructure leaders: we have a vital role to play in taking action on climate change and stepping up the pace of innovation needed to deliver on emissions targets. We believe in working with driven and creative partners who, like us, are focused on making innovation real and moving beyond just words.” PIONEERING PARTNERSHIP What started out as an exciting project between designers and engineers at the two companies, to explore the potential for future construction, evolved over time with the help of a team of smart children into the successful launch of the 42081 LEGO® Technic Concept Wheel Loader ZEUX. The LEGO Group’s Head of Product for LEGO Technic, Niels Henrik Horsted says: “Our two companies have enjoyed an extremely successful partnership over the years in which we have collaborated on several LEGO Technic models. But this is the first time we are making a real machine based on a model and not the other way around – and www.forestmachinemagazine.com

that is what makes this a truly unique project.” COLLABORATIVE MACHINES The prototype LX03 has been built by a dedicated team of engineers, programmers and workshop technicians from Volvo CE sites in Eskilstuna, Sweden and Konz, Germany, in collaboration with the design team in Gothenburg, Sweden. It is a 5-ton wheel loader that has been developed as a modular concept, with the capability of being made larger or smaller with just one or two changes to the manufacturing process. It also shares its driveline with the L25 Electric, making it a zero emission, low-noise machine with a runtime of up to eight hours depending on its application. It is designed to be a smart and safe worker, equipped with a brain that has the capacity to adapt to different scenarios, make decisions in real-time and most importantly collaborate with humans. It can be programmed by customers to complete heavy, repetitive or dangerous tasks, reducing the need for a human on site. www.volvoce.com December 2021

BRUKS MOBILE CHIPPER SELECTED FOR SUSTAINABLE WOOD RESIDUE PROCESSING IN CANADA

B

ruks Siwertell has secured an order for a Bruks mobile chipper from J.D. Irving Limited’s, Irving Woodlands division, one of the largest forestry land holders in Canada. This new acquisition will help continue the company’s strong sustainability strategy. It will process forest residues into mini chips for pellet production at J.D. Irving, Limited’s Grand River Pellet plant in Saint Leonard, New Brunswick, Canada. It can also process forestry waste into biofuel chips for the plant’s boilers. Irving Woodlands will benefit Page 60

from the ability to turn existing slash piles, tops, branches, and forest residuals into mini chips for wood pellet production or into boiler fuel chips, generating energy from forest materials that would typically have been left in the forest to decompose. “An added benefit of in-woods chipping is enhancing fire abatement by removing tinder from the forest floor, which is an ongoing crucial concern for urban communities in Canada surrounded by forests. This chipper is a win-win,” says Joanne Turnell, Sales Representative Canada, Bruks Siwertell. www.forestmachinemagazine.com

Every year, Irving Woodlands grows more wood than it harvests, stating that part of its sustainable forestry strategy means that it harvests less than two percent of its land base each year. “The new Bruks chipper allows for forest-based chipping, which works exceptionally well with selective logging where trees are placed in a pile and the chipper can access them,” Turnell explains. “This will be a new woodprocessing technology approach for the company,” Turnell continues. “In the past, it has December 2021

left the forest residues in place, and has used a terminal grinder for processing the plant’s raw materials. This grinding has had some drawbacks, predominantly due to contamination from stones and other debris, which negatively impacts the pellet production process down the line. “The chipper ensures a higher quality of small wood chips, between 2.5 and 3.8cm, which are debris-free,” Turnell adds. “This smaller-than-average pulp mill chip works well with the pelleting process.” J.D. Irving, Limited is an existing customer and Bruks woodprocessing equipment features in several of its sawmills. “For this new installation, J.D. Irving Limited, makes use of a Bruks 805.2 STC Chipper that was on hand in the USA as a demonstration model. After running successful tests on chip quality for the pellet mill, the decision was made to purchase it,” she explains. The chipper features a side infeed and high-dumping chip bin and can be installed on forwarders, trucks, or other types of vehicles. It has two types of chipping knives, which enables the production of mini chips for the pellet plant and, with a simple drum change, biofuel chips for the boiler. It is characterized by consistent, high-capacity chip discharge and processes hardwood and softwood logs up to about 50cm in diameter with ease. It will enter operations later this year. www.bruks-siwertell.com December 2021

TIMBERPAK LTD PURCHASES NEW SITE IN LEEDS

W

aste wood recycling and reprocessing company, Timberpak Ltd, has announced a significant investment into a site in Leeds. The six-acre site, on Cross Green Industrial Estate, will increase Timberpak’s waste wood capacity in order to meet the growing demand for recycled material from EGGER (UK) Ltd. This material is used to produce carbon negative chipboard at plants in Hexham and Barony, destined for the interior design and housebuilding industries. Previously owned by Hesco Bastian Ltd, the new site is perfectly located to service Timberpak customers in Yorkshire and the surrounding areas. The investment reinforces the recycling company’s commitment to make More from Wood by storing carbon in waste wood that would otherwise be burnt or sent to landfill. Over the next nine months, the site will undergo an extensive fit out, with the installation of state-of-the-art picking and processing technology, to ensure the maximum amount of waste wood material can be processed. This substantial investment will bring additional revenue to the area. The new site is strategically located to benefit the large furniture groups, civic amenity sites and industrial users, which are

www.forestmachinemagazine.com

regular suppliers of waste wood to Timberpak. The purchase signals a commitment by the company to continually invest in the business and ensure a secure and sustainable long-term supply of recycled material. Mark Hayton, Director of EGGER Timberpak Ltd, said, “Our new site will ensure we can maximise our output and protect one of our most valuable natural resources, wood. It is a fantastic opportunity for us to fully support our customers with disposing of waste material responsibly and continue to grow our business. The recycled wood we supply to EGGER UK makes up 40% of a chipboard panel, which is 100% recyclable following use. Our new site will offer additional processing and storage capacity to meet the demand from EGGER’s production sites” Paul Mack from commercial property consultant, Gent Visick, supported Timberpak Ltd with the purchase of the site. In addition to the new site, Timberpak has invested over £1.9 million across its four existing sites. This includes the acquisition of three Liebherr loading shovels, one Scania tractor unit, three Legras walking floor trailers, two Sennebogen Electric 360 material handlers and 50 yard bins. www.egger.com Page 61

ARFON TIMBER

FROM SEED TO TREE & TREE TO TRUSS

A

rfon Timber is a cooperative sawmill, owned and operated by its members and situated at the Peblic Industrial Estate on the outskirts of Caernarfon in Gwynedd, North Wales. It is the largest sawmill and traditional timber framing business in Northwest Wales and uses modern equipment to produce high-quality and sustainable timber products. Page 62

Arfon Timber‘s ethos centres on decreasing the ecological impact of the timber industry by producing durable, beautiful buildings and providing sustainable timber cut at its own sawmill. The high grade and durable Larch, Douglas Fir and Cedar is sourced from sustainably managed local forests, thus helping to reduce timber miles. The art of traditional timber framing www.forestmachinemagazine.com

is becoming increasingly popular, as more and more people come to appreciate the beauty of hand-crafted frames using ancient, time-honoured techniques. Arfon Timber was not the first jointly owned and managed venture of this type for one of the founding members, Mark Chapman, who, after gaining his degree at Bangor University, December 2021

had been a part of a workersowned co-operative system for more than 15 years. The system started out in timber harvesting, with each member owning an item of the equipment which the company needed (Unimog, County 1164, Chainsaws etc.) for its motor manual harvesting operation. Mark enjoyed being out in the forest and the workers co-operative worked very well, with all members having input regarding the running of the business. In 2017 Arfon Timber CoOperative was formed when a niche was spotted in the market for traditional timber framing

and Mark, along with founding members Maf, Leo, Martin and Jess, decided to set up a new business. Each member has a professional background in either sawmilling, traditional joinery or forestry, bringing their own unique skills to the table. Prior to the establishment of Arfon Timber, customers looking to purchase traditional timber framing had a substantial delay from ordering to delivery, as some constructions were manufactured overseas. Occasionally the quality wasn’t quite as good as it could have been, or a miscalculation was made when measuring, which meant even further delays for customers. When I spoke to the members of Arfon Timber – a further two members, Laurence and Alex, have since joined the team – it became blatantly apparent that this was not just a business, but people who were passionate about what they were producing. This is a bonus for customers, as they can hold face-to-face talks with Arfon Timber and receive professional advice on the best way forward for their projects. The business initially started with the purchasing of a second-hand portable bandsaw mill – sawing its own wood gave the company control over the timber quality which was delivered to customers’ premises, where those customers would manufacture their timber constructions on-site. Once on-site, the timber was sawn and then manufactured into frames and December 2021

structures using traditional French-inspired carpentry methods with a bit of Japanese influence. The used bandsaw wasn’t as reliable as anticipated, but it was discovered that it had been used to build a replica of the Mayflower ship in Liverpool and had previously done a considerable amount of work. After deliberation between the members, the decision was made to purchase a new Logosol B1001 bandsaw and production doubled instantly. Word quickly spread and the business flourished. It soon became apparent that premises would have to be found. Working at their customers’ premises had some advantages, but also many disadvantages, including having to cart unused timber, waste and off cuts off-site. A large industrial unit with a good-sized yard ideal for storing round and sawn wood with good access for timber deliveries and collections became available and was the ideal new home for Arfon Timber. This was a perfect set up in every way, with a good location, and plenty of room under cover for manufacturing the large frames and other structures. I was surprised at how big the site was; I had it in my head that I would be visiting a small, specialised sawmill, but this was on a much grander scale. Exiting the car, I was hit with the lovely aroma of Douglas Fir; the resin in some trees can give off a slightly pungent smell, but I find Douglas very pleasing. There were a few hundred www.forestmachinemagazine.com

tonnes of roundwood sawlogs which included Douglas, Larch and Hemlock, stacked in the yard, and a good stock of sawn timber. In addition to its framing timber, the company had planks and boards, fencing timber (including slats and posts), gate posts, redwood cladding, and structural and decorative single beams. Arfon Timber offers customers a bespoke service where timber is cut to their individual requirements. Mark showed me around the mill and revealed that the first large bandsaw which the company had purchased was a Wood-Mizer LT70; this was ideal, as it could cut up to 950mm diameter logs in lengths of up to 7.5m. Many of the company’s structural framing projects require sturdy posts and beams which can be supplied with strength grading certificates to pass building regulations. The decision was recently taken to install a new Mebor HTZ1100 Pro bandsaw; this is a fast, productive, oneperson-operated bandsaw which can saw up to 1m diameter logs. It can produce almost 5m³ of sawn timber per hour and can self load logs of up to 5 tonnes in weight onto the log deck. Mark explained how the Mebor system provides important information so that each species of timber has the optimum sawing and feeding speed, which will provide the highest quality timber. The company uses a 140mm wide bandsaw blade which allows the saw to use a faster sawing speed while giving excellent sawing precision. The band saw has the automatic board removing Page 65

WOOD PROCESSING system, meaning that after the bandsaw cuts a board, the board pusher pushes it off the band saw bed during the return of the band saw head; simple and automatic, with no manual work. The sawn boards can then be easily rolled onto a log deck to be re-sawn to the desired sizes on the Wood-Mizer. The mill is very well equipped, with a kiln for seasoning floorboards and cladding, the Logosol for smaller sawing jobs (which can still be transported if on-site sawing is required), a planer, moulder, saw doctor equipment and forklift truck. The most recent purchase is a second-hand Ponsse Buffalo forwarder for moving timber. I asked Mark whether COVID-19 had affected the business, and he pointed out that Arfon Timber was one of the only places still open where people could purchase sawn timber at the onset of lock-down. Classified as an essential business, the company remained open throughout lock-down and adhered to strict COVID-19 regulations without any incidents.

December 2021

With a shortage of roundwood driving log prices up, I was interested to find out if this had impacted on the business. “We haven’t been able to buy any roadside timber at tender or auction for a considerable time, but we are in a good position where we use oversized diameter logs and some species of trees which are not popular with mainstream sawmills. We get the opportunity to purchase this timber from the sawmills, timber merchants and private estates which has kept us well stocked. We normally use around two lorry loads per week. We have found social media to be a brilliant source for growing our profile and getting our business noticed; around 75% of our current business today is retail sales.”

While on a tea break, I took the opportunity to speak to some of the other members regarding the co-operative ownership they have, and the consensus was that this system is a big success. No one is in overall charge, and they have daily, weekly, and monthly meetings to discuss proposals, developments, and investments. Each member is paid a weekly salary and at the AGM dividend payments are divided equally between the partners. They all believe the co-operative ownership system helps to get more out of each member through collective energy. The company has a few on-site projects coming up soon with its portable sawmill. Keep your eye on the Arfon Timber Facebook and Instagram pages to see

some of the amazing structures being built and for any special offers on timber sales. The company also holds timber framing courses for beginners; the dates of these courses are advertised on the social media pages, or alternatively you can contact Arfon Timber to find out when the next one will be held. Arfon Timber is an independent sawmill and timber framing business which has a reputation for good customer service and quality timber which can be delivered or collected. Staff are available to chat about any type of timber project you have in mind, and will do their utmost to bring it to fruition for you. www.arfontimber.co.uk

SUPER-SIZED WOOD CHIP VEHICLE REDUCES TRANSPORTS BY 30 %

T

he longest and heaviest truck combination for regular delivery on European roads today is 34 meters long, with a total grossweight (TGW) of 98 tons. This 12-axle combination sports a rigid Scania R 770, 8x4, and side-ways tipper bodies from OP Höglunds, moving wood chips from a train terminal, 20 km via the E20 highway to a power plant in Södertälje, Sweden. In 2013 the local energy supplier in the Stockholm region, Söderenergi and transport company Foria started a development project to optimise transport efficiency and reduce CO2. Scania was invited as a trusted partner and supplier of high capacity vehicles and logistics know-how. They jointly designed this x-large truck and trailer combination. Invited was also Skogforsk, the central research body for the Swedish forestry sector, to have this operation scientifically documented. “To constantly develop efficient and environmentally friendly Page 68

transport, it is necessary to be at the forefront and strengthen our sustainability profile,” says Olle Ankarling, Logistics Manager at Söderenergi. GROWING STEP BY STEP And a bold idea it was, as the Swedish road authorities were not prepared to give a dispensation from the regulations, which at the time permitted 60 tons on public roads. In 2014 the project moved half a step towards the desired specification as a permit for a 25.25-meter combination with 9 axles and 74 tonnes was given, with a Scania R 730 at the front. This led to a 30 % improvement of transport capacity as well as 10% fuel reduction. Since it was fuelled with FAME (Fatty Acid Methyl Esters) and later with HVO (Hydro-treated vegetable oil) CO2 reductions were even larger. But the desired 98 tonner was yet out of reach. In February 2020, after six years of transport, without any accidents or incidents, time was finally ripe for the 34m and 98 www.forestmachinemagazine.com

tons to hit the road. The new combination, extended with a link and a dolly between the R 730 truck and the trailer, were to follow the same route, with round-abouts and all. And it worked just as well – only with an additional 30 % capacity increase. SMOOTHER WITH NEW TRUCK In the spring of 2021, a new improvement step was taken, when a new truck with the even more efficient 770 was delivered. Power went up and fuel consumption dropped with the new V8. Owe Lindkvist is sub-contractor to Foria and the owner of the new vehicle, running the daily wood waste route through sometimes dense traffic. He is really enthusiastic about the new truck: “The new truck runs ridiculously smooth! I am not easily impressed, but this time the engineers at Scania deserves a real pat on the shoulder. It is so powerful, more stable with better traction and the driveability is amazing.” SCIENTIFIC MEASURES December 2021

Although this is a singleroute study in Sweden the research results will be shared among scientists in an international context, comparing many variables impacting operations like this. Besides fuel consumption and vehicle size many other factors matter and are thoroughly measured, especially by Henrik von Hofsten, researcher at the Swedish forestry sector, Skogforsk. Among other tools he uses Scania’s Fleet Management System to follow vehicle performance and traffic behaviour. His measurements shows also that loading capacity is affected by factors, like the quality and humidity of the wood chips an shavings transported. “The 98-tonner has performed flawlessly in traffic, which is crucial. But to optimise transport efficiency you also want to reach maximum filling rate as often as possible, which is not always the case. But taking all into account we still see better numbers with the 770 than the 730, both in performance and fuel consumption.” HAPPILY MOVING FORWARD The project participants are happy with the big improvements reached since the start, but not yet content. New plans are being drawn at Söderenergi. Ankarling again: “Going from 60 tons to 98 we increased capacity with 70 % – and fossil free at that. Next step is to become emission free, with electric trucks. Negotiations with authorities and partners have already been initiated.” December 2021

LIVING WITH THE NEW 770 HP KING OF THE ROAD

N

ot by any stretch of the imagination, Norwegian truck driver Rolf Aakvik could come up with the idea he would be involved in developing the world´s strongest truck. Yet that was exactly what happened. The world´s strongest truck was developed in close cooperation with customers. One of them is Tverås Maskin & Transport (TMT), in Trondheim, Norway. TMT is one of Norway´s largest transport suppliers of heavy machines, building roads and bridges in and around the Trondheim area, but also in other parts of Norway. In the company there are 16 heavy crushing machines, 71 excavators and 34 wheel loaders to carry backwards and forwards across the mountainous country. Which of course requires a lot of power. “PROUD TO BE INVOLVED”

www.forestmachinemagazine.com

“For that reason we have been using Scania trucks for many years and we are very proud to be involved in this field test, developing the new V8,” says Frode Tverås, one of the Leaders of TMT. When TMT got the question from Scania if they wanted to be part of a field test developing the new 770 S V8 truck, it was obvious that the job would go to Rolf Aakvik. He started in the company 17 years ago as an apprentice and has since then exclusively been transporting heavy machines all over Norway. OUT OF THE ORDINARY “I’m mostly a pretty calm person, but that assignment made my heart beat a little extra. I wasn’t told how many horsepower this new engine has, but I could feel it was something out of the ordinary. Maybe the strongest truck in the world, but I couldn’t know,” Rolf Aakvik says. Page 69

UD TRUCKS KICKS OFF GLOBAL LAUNCH OF NEW EURO 5 TRUCK RANGE

D Eventually he found out it was 770 hp. Rolf´s mission for Scania is to provide feedback on how the new V8 works in everyday operations and come up with things which can be improved. He has a hard time catching that his experiences and views will be a small but important input to the new King of the Road. USEFUL EXTRA POWER “I have shared my views both on how the engine works in steep climbs and on what it´s like to live in the new cabin,” he says. “The extra effect from the engine is particularly useful for the heavy loads I drive, often in steep climbs. And the development of the cabin is very positive. This one is much better to live in compared to before.” “Overall, my job has become much easier!” www.scania.com Page 70

rive for better with the new Euro 5 Quester and Croner trucks, with feature enhancements that boost profitability by doing more with less to overcome critical resource constraints. UD Trucks has unveiled a new Euro 5 range for the wellestablished Quester (heavyduty) and Croner (mediumduty) trucks. The upgrade also boasts enhanced features that will improve uptime, enhance efficiency, and optimize Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), all while lowering the vehicle’s environmental impact and retaining benefits from previous models. The new Euro 5 range will be introduced in fast-growing and emerging regions around the world that are moving to adopt more stringent international emission standards in a bid to cut pollution and improve air quality. In most markets, UD Trucks’ new Euro 5 range will be introduced ahead of these regulations to better prepare businesses for the switch to a cleaner fleet.

www.forestmachinemagazine.com

This latest launch bolsters UD Trucks’ Better Life purpose – to be better for logistics, the planet, people, and business. Better Life drives the integration of sustainability across all of the company’s operations and processes to realize lower environmental impact, higher customer satisfaction, higher profitability, and a better place for people to work and live. Jacques Michel, UD Trucks International Sales, Senior Vice President said “In today’s world, sustainability is more important than ever. COVID-19 is also placing more emphasis on a more sustainable approach to driving a post-pandemic recovery. Modern and efficient logistics is vital to keep the world moving in these fastevolving times, and our latest launch will ensure greater resilience for businesses while ensuring environmental impacts are minimized.” ENSURING BUSINESSES STAY COMPETITIVE IN A RAPIDLY CHANGING WORLD WITH EURO 5 Air pollution is one of the largest December 2021

health threats facing the world today. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA) global energy review 2021, global energy carbon emissions are projected to rebound in the post-COVID era to grow by 4.8%. This would represent the largest single increase in over a decade. Emissions from transportation alone are at risk of increasing global emission levels by over 1.5%. Moving towards cleaner fleets is imperative. Euro 5 reduces NOx emissions by about 43% compared to Euro 4 and significantly reduces the carbon footprint of the vehicle through cleaner emissions. As the first truck manufacturer to introduce Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology in 2004, UD Trucks’ new Euro 5 range features SCR technology to significantly boost environmental protection and fuel economy. With these benefits, SCR technology is proven to be more reliable when compared to other emission control technologies for reducing NOx emissions. BENEFITS OF SCR TECHNOLOGY • Lower maintenance requirements reduce operational costs • Higher power and torque through optimized combustion, without increasing the size of the engine • Increases fuel efficiency to better manage fuel costs; fuel is the largest operating expense, representing about 60% of total operating costs December 2021

Aside from featuring a Euro 5 system with SCR technology, the new range of Quester and Croner also features a new instrument cluster with real-time fuel coaching. This enhancement provides drivers with immediate and specific feedback on driving techniques that are more fuel efficient. •

• •

Cleaner and more robust engine configuration with lower sensitivity to sulfur content in fuel, leading to longer engine life Longer service intervals means less time required for maintenance Uptime is also boosted with a stable and expanded AdBlue supply network* – a safe-to-use diesel exhaust fluid used in vehicles with SCR technology to reduce harmful gases from being released into the atmosphere AdBlue is available at all authorized UD Trucks dealerships. AdBlue may also be available at fuel stations, workshops and online

Michel concludes, “For 86 years, we have grown UD Trucks to be a truck brand of choice for our customers. We are committed to continuing our endless pursuit www.forestmachinemagazine.com

of bettering lives in the spirit of our “Gemba” philosophy, leveraging smart and sustainable logistics solutions to provide ultimate dependability for our customers, business partners, colleagues and society at large.” The new Euro 5 range of heavyduty Quester and medium-duty Croner will be rolled out in key growth markets – across Southeast Asia, Middle East, Africa, and Latin America – from October 2021 onwards. HOWIE FORESTRY SOLUTIONS FORGING AHEAD

T

here have been more new developments at Howie Forestry Solutions Ltd (HFS). In the last issue we reported that HFS had been appointed the Kesla dealers for Scotland. Since then, there have been some new and exciting additions to the equipment that the company supplies and installs, which will complement its existing range. Adam Howie, the director of the company, was eager to show

Page 72

me the current project which had just been completed at the workshop near Tarbolton in Ayrshire. Adam had just finished modifying a New Ford Holland T8.410, which would be the latest addition to the company’s fleet of low ground pressure timber haulage equipment. LPGs are used for removing timber from harvesting sites and delivering it to a collection point close to the main road. These vehicles reduce the damage to

www.forestmachinemagazine.com

forest and narrow B roads while also preventing wear and tear on articulated Lorries when travelling on rough forest roads. The New Holland had just been fitted with a new Kesla 2110T crane and cabin and was on extra wide 900 and 650 Michelin tyres, which reduces ground pressure. HFS is the UK distributer for a new hydraulically-operated greasing system which is manufactured in Finland and

December 2021

called Movalube. Greasing a machine can be time consuming and not a very welcoming prospect on a wet and windy day – the Movalube system has been designed with this in mind. It requires no electricity to work, as it is operated by hydraulic pressure generated from the components it is greasing; for example, when the crane cabin is raised and lowered, one pump of grease is sent to the moving mechanism. This way it is greased when being used as opposed to an electrical system that greases on a preset timer whether in use or not. Each lubrication point can be adjusted manually or closed if not needed, and if other

hydraulically-operated components are fitted to the machine they are easily added onto the system. As there are no electric cables that can oxidise or circuits that can fail, this is the ideal system for challenging forestry, construction, and mining conditions. It has been designed to work effectively in all types of weather and

comes with a full two years’ manufacturer’s warranty. Even being stored for long periods doesn’t affect the performance, as the moving parts are always lubricated even when not in use. Another benefit of this system is that it can be used with standard NLGI 00 grease or the thicker NLGI 2

HAULAGE in hotter or more demanding conditions. This can save a lot of money each year by reducing wear and tear on pins, joints and bushes, and saves over two days a year on maintenance time. It only needs refilling around once a month and is easy and quick to replenish. Adam can fit the Movalube to most equipment in about a day, and this system will not be long in recouping the initial outlay. The Movalube complies with ADR regulations and can be used safely on trucks and vehicles that carry dangerous cargo. STEELYARD-PESON WEIGH LINK A major problem facing timber hauliers is assessing the weight of timber. Different species of trees have different densities, which affects the weight; fresh cut wood is much heavier than timber stacked for a period. Ground conditions and soil types also affect growth rates of trees, which in turn influences the density. This is a minefield for hauliers, as overloading leads to safety issues, heavy fines and bans from entering the forest. Running underweight increases the operating cost of the lorry. HFS have been loading articulated timber trailers with their low ground pressure equipment for many years. An accurate method of assessing the weight of each load that is travelling down the road is a necessity. The company uses the Steelyard-Peson weigh link system, which it has found to be highly accurate and reliable, so much so that the company Page 74

Steelyard-Peson weigh link system is now an authorised dealer and can supply and fit these weighers onto customers’ vehicles and loading equipment. The wireless on-board weighing system is installed between the end of the dipper boom and the rotator. It increases productivity by saving considerable loading time while maximising load capacity and distribution without overloading a vehicle. It is accurate no matter what position the vehicle is in, level or sloped, and is very sturdy, as it is manufactured from a solid block of high tensile steel. Fitting takes around half a day and it is easy to set up, use and is maintenance free. It is resistant to extreme shocks and designed for intensive use with different models in each of the 4-, 8-, 16- and 32-tonne scales to fit all types of linkages. It is a wireless communication system between the link and screen and requires no factory calibration. The weigh link has low energy consumption powered by a battery which lasts around a year. It is available with the new 7” touchscreen with easy-towww.forestmachinemagazine.com

read and operate colour display and simplified data transmission for crane cabins or the monochrome 4.3” backlit display with large buttons and steel protection for use with gloves which can be mounted in the cabin or on the crane’s top seat. Both can be used with 12-36 voltage supplies and have the option of a wireless printer which can give a detailed customised print out. The New Holland certainly gave off the impression it was ready for the work that is in front of it, and all the modifications carried out by HFS were very professional, meaning that it looked like it had come straight out of the factory with them fitted. Howie Forestry Solutions is a company focused on its customers’ needs and will manufacture individual bespoke equipment fabrications as per its customers’ requirements and ideas. I’m sure it won’t be long before I will be back to see another interesting project leaving the workshop. www.howieforestry.co.uk December 2021

EDUCATION

LAPLAND EDUCATION CENTRE AND PONSSE LAUNCH A SIMULATIONBASED LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

P

ONSSE and Lapland Education Centre REDU have launched an advanced simulation-based learning environment in Rovaniemi, Finland. This also involves the largest simulator deal in Ponsse’s history. The simulation learning environment was created through collaboration between PONSSE and REDU, with PONSSE delivering a total of nine PONSSE simulators. One of the simulators is a “Basic” model

simulator, three are “Full” model simulators and five are new “Multi” simulators. The Education Centre is now equipped with a total of 11 PONSSE simulators. Students use the equipment in different stages of their learning path from basic studies to the most advanced assignments. “The new equipment enables more students to be trained at the same time. Simulator training effectively supports forest machine education and

provides a good basis for work before students start operating an actual machine”, says Ilkka Rantahalvari, lecturer at Lapland Education Centre REDU. “Simulator training is safe, economical and effective”, says Harri Savonen, training development manager at Ponsse. A NEW VIRTUAL WORLD TAKES STUDYING TO A NEW LEVEL PONSSE’s simulators are

There are many benefits in using a simulator, not only for training but also for employers to screen potential employees. Companies are able to gauge how an operator will perform and use that information when assigning tasks. Operators can be trained on a simulator without the fear of damaging equipment, so experimenting with different techniques or trying new methods can be done safely and risk-free. Also, by training on a simulator, other equipment is not being tied up and slowing production. When operators December 2021

HOW IT WORKS Tigercat simulators have three screens, a motions platform, as well as all the associated Tigercat machine control software and hardware. The simulator’s software communicates directly with the Tigercat machine control software so the controls are identical to the actual machine. Any adjustments that can be made on the machine, can also be made on the simulator which helps teach operators not only motor skills but the effects of the many machine adjustments available to operators. Tigercat simulators are www.forestmachinemagazine.com

equipped with an actual operator’s seat, including all control pods, the machine’s computer control system, as well as the harvesting head control system on the harvester simulator. The transition for new operators from virtual to actual is almost seamless. Tigercat VP, cut-to-length systems, Jon Cooper explains, “The introduction of the Tigercat simulator provides dealers with a valuable training tool that can save machine owners significant start-up costs. Using the simulator to teach operational skills in realistic environments allows the new operator to enter into a real machine with much higher productivity levels from the start. This can produce extra production income and avoid expensive machine damage.” www.tigercat.com Page 77

the Iggesund export sales manager, suggested carrying out field trials with a brand-new product that the company were launching, the Blu Line Vyking ¾” Gide Bar.

Having trialled several of Iggesund’s products over the last few years, I had no hesitation when Ian Lawrence,

- which Iggesund are keeping secret - that will work effectively in every species of tree. The Vyking bar features the revolutionary 60 degree cut endurance rails. This minimizes chain wear on the bar with less service stops for grinding off roughed up edges and will offer a longer life span. The bar is equipped with a replaceable December 2021

TRIALS chains on a Tigercat LH855C with a LogMax 10,000 head. Bobby Melvin, an experienced operator, was at the controls of the Tigercat and was working on a Larch Clear fell near Forfar. Ian Lawrence and I met Harold at his office just off the A90, and he took us out onto site. Bobby was nearing the top of a steep drift a few hundred meters uphill from the road, my idea of coming back a few hours later when he was at the bottom fell on deaf ears. We were able to make our way up by zigzagging through the standing trees - walking up through a well thinned block is much easier than doing spectacular acrobatics while walking up the brash mat. The trees were averaging 0.7m³ and it was an unusually dense and slow growing Larch crop with very tight growth rings.

There was about 7,000m³ to cut in total and Bobby had cut just over 2,000m³ when we arrived. A few loads had been loaded onto Lorries and taken to the sawmill over the previous days and Harold was surprised at just how heavy the timber was.

With Larch it can be a struggle getting the weight on the Lorry - due to it being one of the lighter species - but this timber was the complete opposite with the Lorry only ¾ loaded before reaching the legal weight limit. Watching a good operator like Bobby working is always a pleasure and although he was productive his presentation of different sized timber for the forwarder was very tidy. Bobby was very positive about the performance of the Iggesund Blue Vyking bars. He noticed the reduction in weight when he installed the first bar and was a little apprehensive over the strength to begin with. After a few days cutting he was soon reassured that although the Iggesund bar was substantially lighter, it was performing very well. The ground was reasonably firm earthy soil with very few stones, this allowed Bobby to get his felling cut low to the ground. This is important because when the harvester fells the tree it must make a level cut across the stump. It can result in the

T-SHIRTS & HOODIES

bottom side of the remaining stump being substantially higher than the topside due to steepness of the ground. This can cause severe extraction problems for the forwarder operator if the harvester operator doesn’t cut them low enough. Having harvested just over 2,000m³ with the bar, there was still little evidence of wear. Each time Bobby fitted a sharp chain he turned the bar so it would wear evenly. The LogMax 10,000 doesn’t have an automatic chain tensioner, this must be done manually. This visit was just to get some initial feedback from Bobby as to wear and performance, but I will be visiting him again in December once he has put a lot more cubic meters through the head. It will be interesting to get Bobby’s thoughts and the results of the longevity and performance of the Vyking Guide Bars. This was Iain’s first trials with the new ¾” bar and it was pleasing to receive positive feedback. www.iggesundforest.com
