WELCOME The outlook this year is looking good for our own home-grown timber as the Scandinavian and Baltic countries are currently bypassing the UK for North America with their timber exports. A massive rise in the American housing market is pushing up the price of sawn timber and increasing consumer demand creating an attractive market for exporters. It is just as well, as the recent storms have had such a damaging effect on the east side of the country. It is estimated more than one million tonnes of trees have blown down. The clear up operation is well underway, and timber has begun arriving at the sawmills and wood processing plants.

WOOD LIFTED WITH KESLA STAYS ONBOARD

K

ari Malmstedt is a man with a relaxed and unpretentious attitude. His transport company, Kari Malmstedt Oy, mainly timber transport, operates throughout Eastern Finland from Nurmes to Hamina and as far west as Petäjävesi. Managing a large business teaches you to appreciate the basics such as reliability, availability and dependability, that’s why Malmstedt chose Kesla. “They work well,” says the entrepreneur from Enonkoski in his relaxed, straightforward style. Malmstedt is certainly not running a small business as his company currently employs around 45 people – including the entrepreneur himself – most of whom work as operators of 20 timber trucks. The company’s

4

fleet also includes one 92-tonne HCT test truck, more than 20 timber cranes, as well as cassette trucks and wheel loaders for earthmoving. “We have a pretty comprehensive fleet,” says Malmstedt. NO REGRETS When it came to timber cranes, Kari Malmstedt Oy chose Kesla in 2005 and has never regretted the choice. “We currently have 14 Keslas in operation,” says Malmstedt. When asked what prompted the switch from the Loglift and Jonsered products he had previously used, Malmstedt didn’t hesitate to answer, “Kesla is a local player, right in the middle of our driving area. Spare parts are readily available, and after-sales service is better than that of the competitors, it has to be said,”.

Malmstedt praises Kesla’s own after-sales service and sales organisation. Erätaito Tero Toivanen, Kesla’s official contract maintenance company, gets full marks from Malmstedt to the extent that the salesman was a key factor. The Keslas used by Kari Malmstedt Oy are front-fold Z-cranes. “In a tractor, the load can be maximised if the crane doesn’t take up load space,” Malmstedt says. “Kesla is completely superior to its competitors in this respect. The same applies to lifting power and reach.” Malmstedt also praises Kesla’s hydraulics: “We’ve got it right, even though our machines have an oldfashioned dual-circuit hydraulic system. The mechanical fourlever steering works well. The

NO NEED TO STRIP OFF IN THE SUMMER HEAT Malmstedt’s Kesla crane cabins are the basic model but customised with the company’s own colours. “There are now eight Kesla’s with the new model of cabin. We switched to those in 2017,” says Malmstedt, describing Kesla’s standard-size cabin as comfortable. “Good visibility, and even larger men can be accommodated. The operators have been incredibly happy.”

“Kesla is reliable and durable. All our cranes are the same and can be used on all vehicles so they work well.” That’s the secret behind the happy smile of both Kesla and the owner of the transport company. www.kesla.com

Forestry workers in Finland inevitably meet the country’s extreme temperature fluctuations and seasonal extremes. So do the people who drive timber and operate cranes. In the freezing cold, Kesla’s cabin is warm enough, and even in the summer heat you don’t need to strip off. However, not all the Kesla cabins in Malmstedt’s company are equipped with air conditioning, so they need to have “a few more windows open,” according to the entrepreneur, but the Malmstedt company has been satisfied overall.

NEW UNIQUE SAFETY FEATURE FOR VOLVO’S ELECTRIC TRUCKS

V

olvo Trucks launches a new, patented safety feature for electric trucks – Active Grip Control. The new technology significantly improves stability, acceleration and braking in slippery conditions. Thanks to the fast response of the electric motors, the force generated between the wheels and the road can be controlled in an instant to proactively prevent wheel spin. The feature clearly improves acceleration in slippery conditions. Tests performed with the Volvo FH Electric on a low friction surface with a loaded trailer showed 45% improvement at full acceleration. “The improvement when going up a slippery, gravel road is really impressive. I believe this will increase productivity, not least for our construction customers,” says Anna Wrige Berling, Traffic & Product Safety

Tests performed on a low friction surface showed 45% improvement at full acceleration. Director at Volvo Trucks. If the truck starts to skid, multiple sensors allow the vehicle’s control system to react to the road surface conditions and utilize the vehicle’s electric motors, along with other actuators, in an intelligent way to help the driver stay on the road. The new feature is also designed to reduce the risk for jack-knifing and oversteering when driving unloaded. “With Active Grip Control we

are giving our drivers further improved ability to traverse difficult roads and terrain – even during the most challenging of conditions. This is a unique function that Volvo Group has protected by patents,” explains Anna Wrige Berling. Improvements can also be seen when braking, as the function can be used for controlled regenerative braking without going into ABS. This increases efficiency, since more time is spent in regeneration,

ANY USE OF HAND-HELD MOBILE PHONE WHILE DRIVING TO BECOME ILLEGAL

P

olice will soon be able to more easily prosecute drivers using a hand-held mobile phone at the wheel after the government strengthens existing laws to further improve road safety.

6

It is already illegal to text or make a phone call (other than in

an emergency) using a handheld device while driving. This year, laws will go further to ban drivers from using their phones to take photos or videos, scroll through playlists or play games. This will mean anyone caught using their hand-held device while driving will face a £200 fixed penalty notice

and 6 points on their licence. The highway code will also change making it clear that hand-held phone use at traffic lights or in traffic jams is illegal. This follows a public consultation that found 81% of respondents supported

The Forestry Haulier = allowing for a smoother braking experience. The Active Grip Control feature will be available on the heavyduty Volvo FH, Volvo FM and Volvo FMX Electric trucks, that are used for regional haul and construction operations. A version of the feature will also be available on trucks with a diesel or LNG driveline. FACTS ABOUT VOLVO’S ELECTRIC TRUCKS: • Volvo Trucks have a range of six all electric trucks designed to cover a wide variety of different transport assignments. • The Volvo FH, Volvo FM and Volvo FMX Electric are heavy-duty trucks with a gross combination weight of 44 tonnes. Sales are ongoing in Europe and production will start in the second half of 2022. • Serial production in Europe of the Volvo FL and Volvo FE Electric, for city distribution and refuse handling, started in 2019. • Production of the Volvo VNR Electric for North America began in 2021. www.volvotrucks.com proposals to strengthen the law and make it easier for culprits to be prosecuted. Drivers will still be able to continue using a device ‘hands-free’ while driving, such as a sat-nav, if it’s secured in a cradle. They must, however, always take responsibility for their driving and can be charged with an offence if the police find them not to be in proper control of their vehicle.

PERFORMANCE OF VOLVO FH WITH I-SAVE FUELS ANOTHER HUGE ORDER FOR MARITIME TRANSPORT

M

aritime Transport has begun to take delivery of a further 355 Volvo FH with I-Save tractor units, adding to the 170 it already has in service and making the Felixstowe-based business the UK’s largest operator of Volvo’s turbo compound engine trucks. The decision to invest heavily in Volvo’s FH with I-Save follows the success of an initial fuel trial at the end of 2019 and the performance of the trucks it already has in service – which have quickly proven to be among the business’ most fuelefficient 44-tonners. All the tractor units in the new order will be Volvo’s latest version of the FH with I-Save and will arrive in batches throughout 2022. The vast majority will be 460 hp models with the spacious

Globetrotter cab, however these will be joined by 25 featuring the more powerful 500 hp engine plus the larger Globetrotter XL cab for specific drivers in the Maritime fleet. The new trucks benefit from a more aerodynamic design, plus an improved map-based I-See system which constantly reads the road 2km ahead to optimise gear changing strategy, to ensure the best possible fuel performance. All this combines with the Volvo D13TC Euro-6 engine which lies at the heart of the I-Save product. It uses turbo-compounding to allow the driver to maintain lower revs and a higher gear for a longer time, contributing to a smoother, quieter and more fuel-efficient journey. www.volvotrucks.co.uk

TWO BIOGAS PLANT OPERATORS COMBINE EXPERTISE TO PRODUCE BIO-LNG

L

eipzig-based BALANCE Erneuerbare Energien GmbH – a wholly owned subsidiary of VNG AG – and biogas all-rounder EnviTec Biogas AG, based in Lower Saxony, intend to jointly produce and market CO2-free fuel for commercial and heavyduty transport as independent supplier. The bio-LNG liquefaction plant (Liquefied Natural Gas) is planned to be constructed in Brandenburg, near Berlin by the newly established company BALANCE EnviTec Bio-LNG GmbH. In addition to the actual liquefaction of biomethane it

will have storage tanks and a filling station for tanker trucks. “With our cooperation, we want to set an important milestone in the decarbonisation of the transport sector,” says Olaf von Lehmden, CEO of EnviTec Biogas AG. Thomas Fritsch, Managing Director of BALANCE adds: “We are pleased to announce that, in future, we will be able to liquefy biomethane in our own facility thus creating bio-LNG, enabling us to bring it to the fuel market. It is only with CO2 neutral fuel that commercial and heavy-duty transport can make its contribution to

achieving climate targets.” The joint ventures plant will be constructed in accordance with the latest state of the art measures to ensure almost energy-neutral operation and will produce about 100 tons of bio-LNG per day from Q4 2023. These quantities will make it possible to operate an average of up to 1,800 LNG trucks in an environmentally friendly manner annually. The joint construction and operation of the liquefaction plant will enable two of Germany’s leading biogas plant operators to produce bio-LNG

CALL FOR TIMBER TRANSPORT PROJECTS

L

ocal authorities and landowners across Scotland are being encouraged to work up their timber transport projects now so that they can be submitted to Scottish Forestry by midday on the 21st March 2022.

8

Winning proposals that minimise the impact of timber lorries on Scotland’s rural communities and road network will receive a cash boost from the Strategic Timber Transport

Fund (STTF). The awards mostly address improvements to minor fragile roads but will also look to support measures that help decarbonise timber transport. This could include the promotion of projects that transport timber by sea or rail, supporting the drive to meet Scotland’s net-zero targets. Environment Minister Màiri McAllan said: “Over the past 15 years, nearly £60 million has helped to deliver 292 timber

transport projects through the Strategic Timber Transport Fund. We will be able to fund next year’s budget and subject to Parliamentary approval, intend to allocate £7 million towards the fund. “We need to ensure that the right infrastructure is in place so that timber supplies can reach their markets. But we need to do this in a way that minimises disruption to rural communities

from their biomethane and bring this onto the market. BioLNG is mainly used for medium and heavy-duty trucks that have to travel longer distances. fuel distributors are obliged to achieve a 25% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of their products by 2030. In addition to using selfgenerated biomethane, the joint venture will purchase biomethane from now on and onwards. Further the joint venture will be able to provide a service option to liquefy biomethane from other biomethane producers. “This means we can either buy the biomethane from plant operators or, provide liquefaction plant capacity in order for them to market the resulting products itself,” Fritsch continues. www.balance-envitec-bio-lng.de and supports Scotland’s ambitions to reach Net Zero. I would encourage landowners and local authorities to work on their proposals now, so that they can be submitted in good time. This will also help Scottish Forestry award the grants as soon as possible.” The STTF is part funded by Transport Scotland and managed by Scottish Forestry. Much of the STTF goes towards work on minor B, C class and Unclassified roads. This might include improving drainage systems, strengthening or upgrading surfaces, widening corners, adding traffic calming measures or by providing passing places – making it easier

MAN LAYS THE FOUNDATIONS FOR EXPANSION OF THE PLANT IN KRAKOW

M

AN Truck & Bus is upping the pace of its transformation and the associated expansion of its plant in Krakow, Poland. The foundations were laid in a celebratory ceremony. MAN is investing around €130 million in the expansion of this production plant. By September 2022, the production site is set to be extended by around a third in terms of area and fitted out as a volume balancing plant for HGVs. This will enable some 300 vehicles and cabs to roll off the production line with employees working in three shifts. To for local residents and business to share the rural road network. Grant funding will continue through the fund for TimberLINK. This service enables timber to be moved by sea on the west coast of Scotland, removing nearly one million lorry miles a year from Scottish roads. The fund also supports the work of one national and five regionally based Project Officers who engage with local authorities and forestry stakeholders to identify any local timber transport issues, and seek to identify potential solutions. www.forestry.gov.scot

guarantee the sustainability of the site, a new bio-energy source will ensure that the plant is CO2 neutral in the future. This work will just about treble capacity at the Krakow plant. After the expansion, Krakow will employ around three times more staff than before, creating some 1,500 extra jobs at the Polish site. The area of the extended plant will increase from 24 to around 41 hectares. This expansion work will see the construction of a new 26,000 m² hall for cab production and another 10,000 m² hall for the Truck Modification Centre. This will enable MAN to offer the entire truck range with maximum quality in Krakow and the main plant in Munich, where space will be used for mixed production of conventional and electric trucks. Krakow and Munich will be a pair of strong partners in the truck network. The company and works council agreed on these and many other measures in April 2021, as part of MAN’s transformation process. The whole package of measures is aiming for an increase in MAN revenue of up to € 1.7 billion. This should provide the company with the latitude it needs to be able to make targeted investments in its future. mantruckandbus.com

CUSTOMER SERVICE THAT GOES ABOVE AND BEYOND

lucar’s salesman Thomas Partanen lives and breathes customer projects. He is always looking for innovative solutions to make the timber trucks perfect for their owners, and the best part is that he loves his job. The most recent project was a MAN truck that was delivered to Sweden. This timber truck included multiple special solutions from a front protection to a motif painting. It didn’t slow Thomas down even when Alucar didn’t have everything on hand. Thomas started working at Alucar 7 years ago. After working in domestic sales and spare part sales, he moved to export sales. Sweden and the Baltic countries are his sales areas. Thomas’ job is his passion and a real dream come true – he gets to travel, dig into customers’ wishes, and help fulfil them. “I genuinely enjoy my job. Projects vary, which is important to me. The trucks in my sales areas are built in the factory, and I get to be involved in every stage from ideation to building the finished truck,” he says.

10

A TIMBER TRUCK OF DREAMS One example of Thomas’ hard work and perseverance is the MAN timber truck ordered by a Swedish customer. In the spring of 2021, Enköping-based Bredsands Skogstransporter AB decided to order a truck from Alucar for the first time. Thomas travelled to Enköping to visit the

customer and began figuring out their needs and wishes. It soon became clear that an interesting challenge lay ahead, filled with problem solving and planning. After the customer had revealed all their ideas and requirements, Thomas didn’t hesitate to take up the challenge. The customer wanted a perfectly tailored, turnkey timber truck with Alucar’s timber equipment and crane. Not a configuration that is often sold at Alucar. “By talking to the customer we were eventually able to find a good concept that could help us build as complete a truck as possible,” Thomas states. A PAINTED LION AND SPECIAL EQUIPMENT MAKE THE TRUCK STYLISH AND FUNCTIONAL The crane, the front protection, and, for the first time in history, the cabin’s motif painting was, among other things, ordered from Alucar. The customer hoped that the painting would be made in Finland, and wanted the theme to be a lion, since

there is a lion in MAN’s logo as well. Thomas utilized his networks and found a skilled painter in Ostrobothnia. The area has a strong superstructure and trailer manufacturing cluster with the widest range of ability and expertise. Since the customer gave Alucar artistic freedom, Thomas and the painter began designing the picture together, bouncing ideas off each other. When the painting was finally finished, the result was more stunning than expected. “There is now a blue-green lion on the truck’s black side. The result is magnificent, and the customer is thrilled,” Thomas rejoices. The MAN chassis is rarely used for timber trucks, which is why many solutions had to be tailored. The project required considerable consideration and planning, but in the end every aspect was taken care of. THE TRUCK’S MOST PROMINENT SPECIAL

The Forestry Haulier = be fulfilled with a positive team spirit. “I never ask colleagues if this will work. Instead, we try to solve things together. It all starts with designing the truck, and a big part of the initial work is done in cooperation with designers. Once the parts are on the paper, we start the production and begin to fulfil the customer’s wishes. We solve every challenge together. It is amazing to get honest feedback from a grateful customer in the final stages of the project. It brings us joy and makes us even more resilient,” Thomas chats. EQUIPMENT INCLUDE: • • • •

A front protection An integrated cover for side underrun protection Flashing warning beacon lights on the crane outriggers A moving and detachable crane console, a rarity in the Swedish market

OPEN ATTITUDE AND POSITIVE TEAM SPIRIT Investing in your own job satisfaction and stylish equipment is particularly important in the timber transport industry. Drivers usually want to customize their trucks to fit their own tastes and needs. Thomas therefore wanted to really understand the customer’s way of thinking to figure out how their wishes could be fulfilled. “This is my way of doing things,” he humbly says. “I always try to visit the customer to discuss the details so that I can get a clear understanding of their vision.

I have often found that customers appreciate the fact that I genuinely care about their wishes and needs.” The freshly finished MAN lion truck is an excellent example of the kind of customer service Thomas, and Alucar, can deliver. Even the wildest dreams can

AND HOW SATISFIED WAS THE NEW SWEDISH CUSTOMER? “Well, they have already ordered another truck. Even the cabin’s interior is currently being designed Alucar. So, the fun and interesting cooperation continues,” concludes Thomas. www.alucar.com

A Buyers Guide To Weigh Links

H

auling timber is difficult at the best of times as drivers face a multitude of problems each day. One of the biggest - after the police and VOSA, who have a personal vendetta against every timber lorry on the road - is judging the weight of the wood they are loading. Round timber is a nightmare to load with so many factors affecting the weight - species, soil type, rate of growth,

climate, and seasons. This has been a problem for as long as I can remember and the consequences for overloading can be both expensive and severe. With high fuel and extortionate running costs plus traffic hold-ups, it is vital to maximise the efficiency of the lorry by loading as close to the correct legal weight as possible. Weighing links are an excellent solution to maximise load efficiency. A weigh link can be

fitted between the end of the dipper boom and the rotator and will weigh each grab full of timber that is loaded/unloaded and keep a count of the total weight of the load. The latest weighing links are proving to be a lifesaver for forestry hauliers, they are showing to be accurate, durable, and dependable. Accurate weigh links will protect drivers in the event of an accident and are a vital piece of equipment in terms of profitability.

VOLVO TRUCKS LAUNCHES ELECTRIC TRUCK WITH LONGER RANGE

V

olvo Trucks continues to lead the deployment of zero-tailpipe emission trucks across the world. In North America, the company now launches an enhanced version of its Volvo VNR Electric with up to 85% increased range and faster charging. The Volvo VNR Electric is one of Volvo Trucks six all-electric heavy truck models and is specially designed for the North American market. Sales start was in December 2020. The first generation of Volvo VNR Electric had an operating

range of up to 240 km (150 miles). Now an enhanced version of the class 8 (Gross vehicle weight rating of 15 tons and above) electric truck is launched, with an operational range of up to 440 km (275 miles) and increased energy storage of up to 565kWh. The improved performance is due to, among other things, improved battery design and a new six battery package option.

battery package, and 60 minutes for the four-battery version.

The new Volvo VNR Electric also reduces the required charging time, as the 250kW charging capability provides an 80% charge in 90 minutes for the six-

Production of the enhanced Volvo VNR Electric will start in Q2 2022 in the company’s New River Valley plant in Virginia, which is the exclusive producer

“It is a testament to Volvo Trucks’ leadership in a continuously evolving industry that we are bringing the enhanced version of our VNR Electric to the market only a year after sales of the VNR Electric first started,” said Peter Voorhoeve, President, Volvo Trucks North America.

LOGISTICS EMPLOYERS STARTING TO SEE THE GREEN SHOOTS OF RECOVERY, SAYS NEW REPORT

M

uch has been made in the past year of the shortage of HGV drivers and other logistics workers. But after a challenging 12 months for the sector, a new report recently published by business group Logistics UK shows there is cause for cautious optimism that the situation will improve.

20

The Logistics UK Skills Report 2021 reveals that significant steps have been taken to help address the recruitment issues which have plagued the sector for years, with government and industry working together to increase capacity to test new drivers, provide new training schemes, and commit to improving facilities available to those working across the roads network. But as Elizabeth de Jong, policy director at Logistics UK explains, while there has been progress, there is still much work to do: “The flexibility and resilience of our sector in coping with a smaller workforce, coupled with issues caused by Brexit and supply chain disruption caused by worldwide container shipping issues, have been incredible,” she says, “and with higher wages now helping to plug the gaps in employment for companies which can afford them and an increase in HGV driver tests of 25.6% and threefold increase in applications for

vocational provisional licences, there is hope that the shortage of HGV drivers will ease. “However, this is not cause for complacency just yet; although average driver pay surged 10% in the nine months to October 2021 in order to retain existing staff and attract new drivers, smaller fleet operators are still not back to full fleet capacity after the Covid-19 pandemic shutdown, and their inability to compete for drivers by offering higher wages appears to be hindering their efforts to recruit new staff. “Government announcements to help address issues across our sector, including increasing driver testing throughput, funding Skills Bootcamps to train HGV drivers and a commitment to improved overnight parking provision, have been at pace. There needs to be continued focus from government to ensure they are delivered, so business and industry can take full advantage and continue to raise awareness of logistics and the opportunities it offers.” The Logistics UK Skills Report 2021 has been compiled in partnership with independent research agency Repgraph. A copy of the report can be downloaded from www. logistics.org.uk/

240 EXTRA HGV DRIVER TRAINING PLACES IN BOOST FOR VETERANS

T

he number of places for veterans to train as HGV drivers will significantly increase under new plans to better prepare service leavers for employment following their military careers. Under the Career Transition Partnership (CTP) – the MOD’s official scheme for those transitioning from the military into civilian life - the current provision of 100 training places will increase to nearly 350 places over the next 12 months. Courses are available in Cat C, Cat C&E, Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (DCPC) and ADR (dangerous goods), opening up a range of employment opportunities to service leavers. The expansion of the driver training offer will aid a crossgovernment effort to increase the number of HGV drivers, whilst also recognising the ask from service leavers and veterans for more funded vocational training. In addition, following agreement with the Department for Transport (DfT) and Department for Education (DfE), veterans

The Forestry Haulier =

who already hold an HGV licence, but have not undertaken the training to drive commercially, will be able to use DfE Skills Bootcamps to gain this qualification. The Defence School of Transport has been granted approval to train service leavers with the first of these courses having already begun and 120 places made available throughout the year. The new training places are made possible because an exemption has been applied to allow veterans and service leavers to use their Enhanced Learning Credits (ELC) to train as HGV drivers.

HGV SKILLS BOOTCAMP

T

he HGV Skills Bootcamp is a UK governmentfunded training scheme to provide free HGV training for lorry drivers. The HGV skill Bootcamp course will train drivers to be able to drive professionally, and gain their Category C (Class 2) or Category C+E (Class 1) licence. There is a selection of courses that will be made available to some 4000 people, and for a range of skill levels. It is an opportunity to build up sector-specific skills and fast-track to an interview with a local employer.

The additional HGV driver opportunities are part of a broader package which includes 55 vocational training courses, such as plumbing and project management, through the CTP, and thousands of courses on offer through the ELC scheme.

Whether you have no experience in HGV driving but are looking to get a job in the industry, or you wish to expand your current HGV licence (from Category C to Category C+E, or to upgrade to include dangerous substances (ADR licence) for example), there may be a course that interests you. Similarly, if you have been out of the industry for a while but are looking to return to it, help is available. An added bonus with this path to getting your licence is that you will be given lots of support to get an interview for a job once you are qualified, with no strings attached, so expect demand for this training to be high.

This is part of the MOD’s commitment to providing the necessary skills and experience to help service leavers and veterans succeed in civilian working life. www.ctp.org.uk/resettlementtraining/

HGV (LGV) SKILLS BOOTCAMP ELIGIBILITY The eligibility requirements for the HGV Training scheme are fairly broad. You must be 19 years old or over, and can be employed, self-employed, or have recently been made

ELCs can normally only be used for qualifications that are Level 3 or above, on the national Regulated Qualification Framework (RQF). However, this exemption qualifies HGV driver training, usually Level 2, for ELC funding. Although an extra 240 training places are being made available, there is the capacity to increase places depending on interest.

unemployed in the last 12 weeks. The scheme also states that you are eligible if you are returning to work after a break. Regardless of your current position, you must have a full UK driving licence, and it’s important to point out if you have a serious endorsement on your current licence, or you may find it very difficult to find work after you complete the course. HGV DRIVING: NEW TO HGV DRIVING These courses will help you become a qualified heavy goods vehicle (HGV) driver and get the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC). If you’ve got a full car licence or mediumsized vehicle licence (category C1), these Skills Bootcamps will help you qualify to drive either: • a rigid HGV (category C) - these are used for lots of commercial deliveries throughout the UK, some have loading access at the rear and sides as well as electronic tail lifts which makes them easier to load and unload • an articulated lorry (category C+E) - these have 2 parts (the cab and the trailer the cab is pulling) and are mainly used in longdistance haulage or for the movement of large volumes of items as well as bulky or heavy goods www.gov.uk/government/ publications/find-a-skillsbootcamp/list-of-skillsbootcamps
