PAY INCREASE FOR XPO DRIVERS

F

uel tanker drivers employed by XPO on the outsourced Tesco petrol station contract have secured a 27 per cent pay increase with a two year pay deal – lifting pay by £12,000 on average. The 57 drivers, who are members of Unite, the UK’s leading union, had recorded a 100 per cent yes vote for strike action in their determination to improve their pay, which was lower than that paid by competitors. Once XPO understood the strength of the drivers’ feelings,

fresh talks were held and a vastly improved offer was made. The drivers were balloted on the new offer and voted to accept it overwhelmingly. The 27 per cent increase will bring the workers’ pay into line with other drivers on similar contracts in the sector. On average, the deal is worth just under £12,000 per year to the drivers. The threatened strike action is now off but it would have led to fuel shortages across southern and South West England and across much of Wales.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “This is a great win for our members at XPO who by standing together and showing solidarity have transformed their earnings. “This is a further example of how Unite’s focus on jobs, pay and conditions is paying off for tanker and lorry drivers. The union’s focus has been on securing permanent pay increases, rather than one-off bonuses and loyalty payments, which too often fail to materialise.” www.unitetheunion.org

he 2023 models of the Renault Trucks D Wide and C 2.3 m will be fitted with the new DE11 engine. This features patented Wave Piston technology which, by redirecting the flames inside the combustion bowl, optimises use of the available oxygen, thereby improving combustion. New injectors with improved precision are also being fitted to the engine. To boost efficiency, Renault Trucks has also worked on reducing friction loss: the connecting rods, pistons and crankshaft have been redesigned and crankcase gas control has been optimised. A new high-performance ball-bearing turbocharger with improved response time and a variable flow oil pump combined with low-viscosity oil have also

been developed. Renault Trucks has also opted for an optimised post-treatment system and a new engine control unit. The Renault Trucks D Wide and C 2.3 m are also equipped with the new generation Optidriver gearbox. As an option, the Eco mode allows for a further reduction in fuel consumption. Lastly, an additional 5% reduction in fuel consumption can be achieved with the Fuel Eco+ Pack, which includes a roof deflector, side deflectors, a disengageable compressor and automatic engine shutdown after three minutes. All these technologies combined provide a fuel saving of 10% compared with the previous generation of Renault Trucks D Wide and C 2.3m.

Renault Trucks D with 5 and 8 litre engines are fitted with a new 8-speed gearbox, called Optishift. Fully automatic, it offers enhanced driving comfort with better handling at low speeds and improved fuel efficiency. The new Optishift automatic gearbox is available as an option on the Renault Trucks D 4x4. The Eco mode is also available as an option for a further reduction in fuel consumption. Last but not least, the Eco+ Fuel Pack provides additional fuel savings. The combination of all these technologies means that fuel savings of 9% can be achieved compared with the previous generation of the Renault Trucks D. www.renault-trucks.com

VOLVO FH WITH I-SAVE – FUEL ECONOMY WINNER IN TESTS

T

he independent German magazines “Trucker” and “Transport” recently tested the Volvo FH 500 with I-Save against other major European competitors’ trucks. The Volvo came out as the winner in both tests on fuel economy, looking at the total consumption of diesel and AdBlue. Despite the low consumption, the Volvo truck also held a very high average speed in the trucker test and in Transport magazine’s test it even beat the competitors on speed. “Our engineers have managed to combine high speed with a very low fuel consumption, which is a fantastic achievement. You often have to choose one or the other, but we have proven that you can combine economy and performance,” explains Peter Franzén. “Even more impressive is that we managed to be best on fuel economy in both tests, even though the truck tested didn’t have our latest fuel updates that will lower the fuel consumption by a few more percentage points!” The tested Volvo FH had the I-Save specification, which is a variant that combines different driveline and software features to improve the fuel economy as much as possible. The heart of I-Save is the turbo compound engine, which makes it possible to drive with low engine revs and high gears

for longer periods of time. With the recently launched refinements, I-Save cumulatively can add up to a 13% improvement in fuel economy – compared to consumption levels when it was introduced in 2019. “In order to improve fuel efficiency, we have now taken our Volvo FH with I-Save one step further to ensure full optimization of the engine. Considering the historically high energy prices we now have, the timing couldn´t be better,” concludes Peter Franzén. The engines’ combustion process has been further improved by adapting the injectors, compression and camshaft specifically to the refined and unique new wavepatterned pistons. The overall weight and internal friction have also been reduced. The highperformance turbo charger and oil pump have been upgraded and even the oil, fuel and air filters have patented

refinements to get better performance. The updated engine is working together with the intelligent and automated I-Shift gearbox that is now up to 30% faster. The quicker response contributes to further improve the fuel economy, driveability and smoothness of the driving. When driving long distances, the truck’s aerodynamics play an important role for fuel economy. Therefore several key changes to improve air flow have also been made, including tighter gaps on the front of the cab and a longer door extension. All of these improvements add up to deliver the highest fuel economy and lowest total costs ever achieved by Volvo Trucks. It will be interesting to see how Volvo will manage to improve the result even further in coming trade press tests. www.volvotrucks.com

HGV DRIVER SHORTAGE PERSISTS BUT RECRUITMENT INITIATIVES STARTING TO BEAR FRUIT, SAYS LOGISTICS UK

T

he UK’s HGV driver shortage remains chronic, according to Logistics UK’s analysis of the latest Office for National Statistics (ONS) Labour Force Survey data. But with the number of HGV drivers in employment not falling as significantly as in recent quarters, the business group has expressed cautious optimism that initiatives introduced by government and industry in the latter part of 2021 and into 2022 are starting to yield results. “Government and industry have worked hard to address the key issues which have affected the recruitment of HGV drivers in the past,” says Sarah Watkins, Deputy Director – Policy Information at Logistics UK. “The reduction in numbers of HGV drivers in employment,

generally caused by retirements or shifts into other careers, slowed in the first quarter of 2022, compared with the second half of 2021, which illustrates how actions such as increased wages for drivers, drivers’ skills bootcamps and improved throughputs of testing by DVSA are beginning to address the loss of skilled workers which we have seen in the recent past.” “Such a large increase in the number of HGV tests being undertaken is testament to the work being done by DVSA to address its testing backlog, alongside the industry’s commitment to encourage new recruits to join the industry. Simultaneously, the very low number of HGV drivers claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance fell 70% from Q1 2019 to Q1 2022, indicating that there are

hardly any surplus HGV drivers available for work. “Attracting and retaining new recruits and existing HGV drivers in the sector remains a critical priority for the logistics industry to secure a talent pipeline for years to come. It is vitally important that these initiatives continue at pace to maintain recruitment levels and ensure that a sustained future pipeline of skilled drivers can be available to support the supply chain as the economy recovers after the impact of the pandemic. What the industry now needs is a renewed focus on the improvement of facilities for drivers across the strategic roads network, to provide the services and support which these key workers deserve during their working lives.” www.logistics.org.uk

LOGISTICS UK REACTS TO CIVIL SERVICE RECRUITMENT FREEZE

T

6

he Prime Minister’s proposed civil service recruitment freeze could see the UK’s HGV driver shortage escalate if staff managing the backlog of driver testing cannot be recruited, according to Logistics UK. The leading business group is also warning that road safety could be compromised if planned resourcing for heavy vehicle checks is

halted, as Logistics UK’s Head of Road Freight Regulation Policy, James Firth, comments: “The suggested Whitehall-wide recruitment freeze would have a significant impact on the delivery of vital government services such as driver licensing applications, heavy vehicle safety checks and HGV driver testing. Logistics businesses have reported continued

difficulties in accessing HGV annual safety tests and, with a shortage of qualified drivers continuing across industry, it is crucial that this freeze does not compromise the safety of road users nor disrupt the supply chain by reducing the availability of drivers. www.logistics.org.uk

IVECO CONTRIBUTES TO A SUSTAINABLE EUROPEAN TRUCK RACING CHAMPIONSHIP 2022

F

or the second year running, IVECO will contribute to ETRA’s sustainability goals with the IVECO S-WAY LNG Pace Truck, which can cut CO2 emissions by up to 95 percent compared to diesel-powered trucks when powered by bio-LNG.

IVECO will participate in the European Truck Racing Championship (ETRC) 2022 as technical sponsor of “Die Bullen von IVECO” – the partnership between Team Schwabentruck and Team Hahn. The team’s drivers will compete on the new IVECO S-WAY-R racing trucks which have been upgraded to enhance their trademark powerful performance and further reduce their emissions. IVECO is the official partner of the FIA European Truck Racing Championship for the 2022 season, following the agreement signed last year with European Truck Racing Association (ETRA) to extend their longstanding partnership until the end of the 2023 season. The brand will contribute to the ETRA’s sustainability goals to reduce its carbon footprint with the

environmentally friendly IVECO S-WAY LNG, the first ever Pace Truck with alternative traction in FIA-ETRC. In the path to the target of net zero by 2038, FIA ETRC is implementing actions across its operation, including the switch to 100% sustainable fuel for all competitors. Beginning with the first Truck Grand Prix of the year at the Misano circuit in Italy on 21-22 May, the IVECO S-WAY LNG Pace Truck will be on duty. The IVECO S-WAY LNG Pace Truck will be powered by bioLNG stored in its two 540-litre tanks that hold at least 390kg of liquid bio-LNG, giving it a range of up to 1,600 kilometres. With this fuel, it will generate significantly lower nitrogen dioxide and 95 percent less CO2 emissions in comparison with a diesel truck. It has been prepared for its important role at the ETRC with a stylish, specially designed livery and several custom parts such as two yellow rotating beacons, a light bar with LED headlights, an illuminated three-piece

bull bar and LED flashers required by FIA-ETRA technical regulations. IVECO will also take part again in the ETRC 2022 as technical sponsor of the “Die Bullen von IVECO”, the partnership between the Hahn Racing and Schwabentruck teams. It will support the team with the new IVECO S-WAY-R race truck, which has undergone significant upgrades to enhance its powerful performance while cutting further its emissions. German driver Steffi Halm will return as team leader of the Schwabentruck team, with Finnish rookie driver Emma Makinen as team mate. Steffi aims to improve on last year’s good performance, when she won five podiums. Six-time European champion Jochen Hahn will head Team Hahn, with his son Lukas Hahn also in the team. Jochen will be competing to regain his title as Champion. The teams’ IVECO S-WAY-R trucks will be running on bioDiesel in all the Championship’s races. www.iveco.com

One of the company’s vehicles, FG59 OKW, was stopped by DVSA on 22 May 2021. DVSA found that the vehicle’s tachograph unit had never been downloaded by the company, despite having been specified on the licence since July 2019. This prompted an investigation by DVSA which found that: • the authorised operating centre was a builders’ yard. • preventative maintenance inspections had occasionally missed the stated six week intervals. • the operator’s vehicles had a 67% initial MOT failure rate, far above the national average. • during the visit by DVSA vehicle examiner Paul Matthews on 8 December 2021, one of the operator’s vehicles had been given an

VOLVO TRUCKS: FIRST IN THE WORLD TO USE FOSSIL-FREE STEEL IN ITS TRUCKS

A

s the world’s first truck manufacturer to do so, Volvo is now introducing fossil-free steel in its trucks. The steel is produced by the Swedish steel company SSAB and the heavy-duty electric Volvo trucks will be the first to include it.

“We will increase the use of fossil-free materials in all our trucks to make them net-zero not only in operation – but also when it comes to the materials they are built of,” says Jessica Sandström, Senior Vice President Product Management, Volvo Trucks.

The steel from SSAB is produced using a completely new technology, based on hydrogen. The result is a much lower climate impact than conventionally produced steel. Small scale introduction of the steel in Volvo’s heavy electric trucks will begin in the third quarter of 2022.

The first steel produced with hydrogen will be used in the truck’s frame rails, the backbone of the truck upon which all other main components are mounted. As the availability of fossil-free steel increases, it will also be introduced in other parts of the truck. Today, around 30% of the materials in a new

Volvo truck come from recycled materials. And up to 90% of the truck can be recycled at the end of its life. Volvo Group has collaborated with SSAB on fossil-free steel since 2021. The first machine, a load carrier made of fossil-free steel, was showcased in October 2021. Fossil-free steel will be an important complement to the traditional and recycled steel used in Volvo’s trucks. Volvo Trucks is committed to the Paris agreement and to achieving netzero greenhouse gas emissions in the value-chain by 2040, at the latest. www.volvotrucks.com

GOVERNMENT URGED TO STEP UP EFFORTS TO SUPPORT FUEL SUPPLIERS

T

10

wo leading think tanks are urging the Government to speed up incentives for fuel suppliers wanting to offer hydrogen as a low carbon alternative. The UK Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Association (UK HFCA) and HyCymru (Cymdeithas Fasnach Hydrogen Cymru / Wales Hydrogen Trade Association), together representing hundreds of hydrogen businesses and stakeholders, said there were serious concerns that delays could impact the companies wanting to invest in hydrogen as a low carbon fuel. The organisations, which met recently to review the progress

of hydrogen roll-out in the UK, said that while they welcomed extensions to the Government’s Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO) – which now includes hydrogen as a low carbon option fuel for more types of vehicles – more could be done to encourage suppliers. The UK HFCA and HyCymru are urging the Government to act quickly to confirm that electrolytic hydrogen produced remotely from the point of renewable electricity production will be eligible for Renewable Transport Fuel Certificates. This will help to stimulate demand in the transport sector, where hydrogen is a key

component of the journey to net zero. It will also complement Government efforts to scale up supply of hydrogen and reduce overall risk around the growth of hydrogen in the energy system. Celia Greaves, CEO of the UKHFCA said “Hydrogen is too important a part of the UK’s journey to Net Zero for us to let up on the Government. The UK HFCA and HyCymru will continue to do all they can, leading co-ordination with relevant groups to ensure the Government receives consistent, practical and expert advice.” www.ukhfca.co.uk

TENSTAR SIMULATION

I

first came across the company Tenstar Simulation at the last Interforst exhibition in 2018. The company had space on the Eco Log dealers stand and were using harvester and forwarder training programmes. I was mightily impressed with the realism and liked the fact that it wasn’t just a simulator for operating the machine but a training tool that showed you how to do the work properly. Jump forward to 2022, and Tenstar have taken their simulator training to a different level. The company now offers a wide range of professional machine education simulator programmes which are divided into five segments: Construction, Transportation, Agriculture, Forestry and Traffic. All the programmes can be used on the Combination trainer simulator so for schools and colleges just the one simulator needs to be bought and it offers • Motion base for enhanced realism • Tenstar Steering Wheel with or without FNR-shifter • Interchangeable track or traffic pedals • Professional low driver seat with seat belt • Add joysticks with quick switch to enable more machine types - Standard, Forestry, Forklift, and Timber Crane Truck controllers • Touch screen for user interaction • Three 49” landscape screens

• • •

in the front One optional 49” landscape screen in the rear VR goggles for maintenance and walk around safety checks

Each segment has a set of carefully developed exercises, optimized to train students in areas of maintenance, driving, manoeuvring, safety, and special handling. The Traffic segment is divided into a further five categories which include driving an Ambulance, Car, Articulated Lorry, Wagon and Drag Lorry and a Bus. With extensive training scenarios, the user can practice on all aspects of realistic workplace situations as well as perform tests to confirm their knowledge. Timber crane training is under the Construction category and is a useful tool for anyone wanting to make the transition from general haulage to loading roundwood. It is broken down into separate exercises. Steps before driving - this exercise involves walking around the timber crane lorry looking for faults or signs of wear and repairing these. The exercise is also supposed to, by means

of repetition, demonstrate the importance of following fixed routines or a checklist before each run. During the exercise 5-10 faults are generated at random points on the truck. These can be anything from faults affecting tyres, wheel rims and nuts, to cracks in the crane or a low oil level. Maintenance actions - to carry out maintenance work on the crane and the vehicle. All parts of the vehicle requiring regular maintenance should be located and maintained. In this exercise, the user will lubricate all moving parts of the crane, as well as apply grease on the underside of the extension. The air brake’s tanks must also be drained. In total, there are 8 parts of the machine that need attending to. The next exercise is to become familiar with the crane controls before moving on to handling a log. This teaches users the correct place to grip the logs, so they are balanced for loading. The programme then moves onto the start up for loading. This is to learn how to position and setup the truck before loading and how to work with the weighing scale. Once these steps are completed successfully the users will learn how to load

15

a whole section of the truck and how to secure the logs for transport. Finally, the users move onto continuous training. The student is tasked with driving up to and loading from three different work sites. All logs should be secured and weighed before leaving the area. Users can train in a safe, secure, and relaxed environment that provides efficient learning. They can practice extreme situations and operations without risking injury or machine damage. It would be great to see colleges and schools using simulators like these for attracting young people into the industries that are in a crisis due to skill shortages. Simulators should also be made available for adults. www.tenstarsimulation.com

which will be used in an interactive website to inform future fleet operator buying decisions and help stimulate the sale of battery electric trucks. With the Government having set ambitious targets to end the sale of non-zero emission heavy goods vehicles from 2035 (for vehicles of 26-tonne GVW and below, and 2040 for heavier vehicles) the BETT is expected to make a significant and positive impact upon the move

to zero emission vehicles. DAF Trucks is among the firsttruck manufacturers to already have full electric trucks for sale in the UK market, including the 19-tonne DAF LF Electric and the larger DAF CF Electric in 4x2 tractor and 6x2 rigid variant, perfectly suited for general distribution, as well as supermarket delivery and waste collection applications. www.daf.com

FUNDING FOR SELF-DRIVING SERVICES

A

new £40 million competition to kickstart commercial selfdriving services, such as delivery vehicles and passenger shuttles, has just been launched. The funding could create tens of thousands of skilled jobs across the UK over the next decade. The ‘Commercialising Connected and Automated Mobility’ competition will provide grants to help roll out commercial use self-driving vehicles across the UK from 2025, delivering convenience for consumers and making

journeys safer, greener and more reliable. Transport Minister Trudy Harrison said: “We know that self-driving vehicles have the potential to revolutionise the way we travel, making our future journeys cleaner, easier and more reliable. But our absolute priority is harnessing the technology to improve road safety. With around 88% of road collisions currently caused by human error, this funding will drive the introduction of new technology to improve travel for

all, while boosting economic growth and highly skilled jobs across the nation.” The competition will cement the UK’s reputation as a global leader in self-driving vehicle technology, unlocking a new industry that could be worth £42 billion to the UK economy by 2035, potentially creating 38,000 new skilled jobs. The first vehicles to be listed as self-driving in the UK could be available to purchase, lease or rent later this year. www.gov.uk

MAN AND ABB E-MOBILITY REV UP FOR THE NEXT PHASE OF ELECTROMOBILITY IN LONG-HAUL TRUCKING

O

n the site of the former Berlin Tempelhof Airport, in the presence of German Federal Minister for Digital and Transport Dr. Volker Wissing, MAN Truck & Bus had a nearseries prototype of its upcoming electric truck driven in public for the first time. A special technical feature of the trailblazing electric commercial vehicle, which will be launched on the market in 2024, is its capacity for future megawatt charging. ABB E-mobility, a leading global provider of charging solutions for electric vehicles, aims to bring megawatt charging technology to market maturity in the next three years. MAN and ABB E-mobility are thus revving up for the next phase of electromobility: operational capability for heavy- duty longhaul trucking with daily ranges between 600 and 800 kilometres. Moreover, with their unequivocal commitment to electromobility, the two companies are signalling that the industry is ready to proceed, and that legislators must establish the policy framework for zero-emission road haulage.

“We need to decarbonize road freight transport to achieve our climate targets. To make this happen, we are focusing above all on the market ramp-up of climate friendly commercial vehicles and the development of a

corresponding high-performance charging infrastructure. The project we are supporting on high-performance charging for e-trucks on the A2 is providing important learnings. What is important now, is to get more e-trucks on the road quickly. The partnership between MAN and ABB shows that we are on the right track,” said Federal Minister of Digital and Transport Dr. Volker Wissing.

for future carbon-free commercial vehicle fleets: low operating costs and the best overall energy footprint. “As part of the Traton Group, we are already participating in a joint venture with industry partners to develop and operate a highperformance public charging network with a target of at least 1,700 green electricity charging points across Europe,” Vlaskamp added.

During the minister’s test drive in the MAN electric truck, Alexander Vlaskamp, CEO of MAN Truck & Bus, emphasized that “accelerating the expansion of the charging infrastructure is the only way to achieve the evolution of transport and meet climate targets.” He also highlighted why MAN is relying on battery-electric powertrains

To enable long-distance daily ranges between 600 and 800 kilometres, the MAN electric truck, due to be launched in 2024, is already equipped with the technical prerequisites for future megawatt charging systems. ABB E-mobility, as a leading global provider of charging solutions, intends to bring such

The Forestry Haulier = charging systems to market quickly. “We aim to facilitate electromobility in all areas. At ABB E-mobility we have been working on developing the corresponding performance standards for many years. Megawatt charging will require new power technology with more than 1,000 volts, so systemic electrical safety and reliability are essential at these power levels and for the foreseeable use cases. ABB E-mobility is the ideal provider to take on these challenges, as we can significantly accelerate research and development based on our existing technologies. Our shared ambition is to bring this new technology to market within three years. In the past, such development phases have often taken much longer,” said Frank Mühlon, CEO of ABB E-mobility. A binding and uniform standard is also crucial for the introduction of megawatt charging technology. Germany could set benchmarks here: more than 20 partners from industry and science, including MAN and ABB, are working on the high-performance charging project (known as “HoLa” in German), which is funded by the German government and is the world’s first megawatt charging project. Two highperformance charging points with megawatt charging systems (MCS) are being built at four locations along the A2 federal highway. The project is intended to serve as the basis for nationwide expansion. www.mantruckandbus.com

BATTERY PLANT IN BELGIUM

V

olvo Trucks is opening its very first battery assembly plant. Located in Ghent, Belgium, the plant will supply ready-to-install batteries for Volvo Trucks’ full electric heavy-duty trucks. “This investment shows our strong commitment to electrifying truck transportation. By 2030, at least 50 percent of all trucks we sell globally will be electric and by 2040, we will be a carbon-neutral company,” says Roger Alm, President of Volvo Trucks. In the new battery plant, cells and modules from Samsung SDI will be assembled into battery packs that are tailor-made for Volvo Trucks´ heavy-duty electric range: Volvo FH, Volvo FM and Volvo FMX. Series production starts in the third quarter of this year. Each battery pack has a capacityof 90 kWh and the customer can choose to have up to six battery packs (540 kWh) in a truck. The number of batteries depends on each customer’s specific range and load capacity demands.

“By integrating the battery assembly process in our production flow, we can shorten lead times for our customers and secure high-performing batteries, while at the same time increase circularity, ” says Roger Alm. Volvo Trucks´ batteries are designed so that they can later be remanufactured, refurbished and reused. The plant itself is powered by 100% renewable energy. With production of three heavyduty full electric models starting this year in Europe, Volvo Trucks will offer a total of six electric truck models globally, covering everything from city distribution and refuse handling to regional transport and construction work. “We started series-production of electric trucks already in 2019 and are leading the market both in Europe and North America. With the rapid development of charging networks, and improvements in battery technology, I am convinced that we will see a rapid transformation of the entire truck industry in the very near future,” says Roger Alm. www.volvotrucks.com

MERCEDES-BENZ TRUCKS DEMONSTRATES IMPROVEMENTS AND INNOVATIONS

M

ercedes-Benz Trucks underlined its technological supremacy at the recent ITT Hub event and conference with an impressive product presentation that emphasised the breadth of its range and included UK debuts for three more exciting innovations.

A highlight of the manufacturer’s stand was the 6x2 Actros L GigaSpace tractor unit with mighty 460 kW (625 hp), 15.6-litre in-line six-cylinder engine, which is the first vehicle in the country to be fitted with second-generation MirrorCam technology. Mercedes-Benz Trucks’ radical replacement for conventional mirrors was introduced in 2019. Developed following intensive discussions with operators, the revised version was unveiled earlier this week. It incorporates shorter camera arms and boasts new image parameters that provide even better support for drivers, while an updated housing design further reduces lens debris. Aimed at long-distance hauliers and those engaged in heavyduty distribution, the Actros L is also available as a six-wheeled tractor with single or double drive axles, and as an 18- or 26-tonne rigid chassis. It is equipped with a host of new features that deliver further improvements in efficiency, safety and comfort.

20

The Actros L assigned to the ride ’n’ drive was

equipped with two driver aids that were being seen in the UK for the first time: Active Drive Assist 2, the latest, enhanced version of the groundbreaking autonomous driving system, and Sideguard Assist, a safety feature that until now was only available in right-hand drive form on low-entry Econic chassis. Active Drive Assist is the first level 2 autonomous driving system to enter series production. It manages the vehicle’s speed to keep it a safe distance from traffic ahead, and steers it to keep its position in the centre of the lane. The driver always retains overall control, though, and must keep hands on the steering wheel at all times. Active Drive Assist encourages a more relaxed and fuel-efficient driving style, thereby increasing safety. Sideguard Assist employs a radar sensor module that

monitors the left side of the vehicle, including the trailer. It provides significantly improved protection for the most vulnerable road users by providing early warnings that help drivers to avoid collisions when turning left with cyclists, pedestrians or street furniture. Like all diesel-engined trucks bearing the three-pointed star, these vehicles can be operated on bio-fuels such as HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) without any modification, cutting CO2 emissions by as much as 90%. Completing Mercedes-Benz Trucks’ product presentation was a battery-electric FUSO eCanter. Widely acknowledged as the first economically viable, fully electric truck, the 7.5-tonne FUSO eCanter produces zero tail-pipe emissions. www.mbtrucks.co.uk

WHO’S UP FOR A BUSMANS HOLIDAY?

W

ould anyone be interested in a visit to Finland to see how they transport their timber and possibly take in some visits to forestry sites, haulage equipment manufacturers and sawmills? We would need a minimum of 20 people to make it viable with a maximum of 40, so it would be on a first come basis. There will be individual costs involved but Kari Palojärvi, the director of Metsäalan Kuljetusyrittäjätry (The Association of Forest Industry Road Carriers) would arrange all our visits while there to guarantee that it will be a trip to remember. Before Covid landed I arranged, with the help of Adam from Howie Forestry Services Ltd and Neil Stoddart, some interesting haulage related visits in the Scottish Highlands and Argyll for Kari and 26 of his fellow hauliers. The group arrived in Edinburgh along with Virpi Hattula, export sales manager of Alucar, and Tero Nurmi, managing director of the forestry magazine Metsatranslehti oy. The hauliers had a fun time visiting Boyd Brothers Haulage limited at the Pier Annat Point in Corpach and saw the Great Glen Shipping Company transporting timber by boat, which saves thousands of Lorry miles from the fragile highland road network. Another visit was to an active Scottish Woodlands harvesting site at the Fassfern

Estate which was managed by forester Casey Keller. Neil arranged a ferry visit over to Mull to see the impressive Pennyghael floating pier which set up in 2012 between JST Services (Scotland) and UPM Tilhill in collaboration with Pennyghael and Scoor Estates. The floating pier allows timber to be transported from the south side of the Island without disrupting the islands infrastructure and otter population. While there they visited another active harvesting

site managed by Tilhill at the Kinloch Estate. The last forestry visit was to see Howie Forestry Services CLAAS Xerion Saddle Track low ground pressure timber carrier. The CLAAS had been converted for forestry use by Adam Howie at his workshop near Tarbolton in Ayrshire. This caused quite a stir with the Finns as they had never seen anything quite like it before and it took a while to prise them away from it. There were plenty of non

forestry visits too, including a Whisky distillery tour, a trip to Tulloch Castle, Loch Ness cruise and a gondola trip up Aonach Mor in the Nevis range. The hauliers had a memorable time and Kari would be honoured to arrange some interesting visits for forestry hauliers from the UK. This is just to see if anyone is interested, you could fly from any airport in the UK, and we could all meet up at Helsinki airport and start our tour from there. Once I have an idea of numbers, I can then find out about some possible dates with an estimation of cost for transport, accommodation, and meals while in Finland - Kari will help with arranging this to keep the cost as low as possible and an itinerary of visits for the trip. If you are interested, could you please email enquiries@theforestryhaulier.com.
