Carefully balanced medium protein and energy diet designed to supplement forage. Feed to young Deer as part of a feeding programme for Venison production. Fed in conjunction with suitable forage.

WINTER FEEDING As winter approaches and temperatures drop it is essential to provide extra energy to protect deer against the cold, and minimise weight loss. Deer over-wintered outside require supplementary feeding. This is particularly important for those deer in exposed environments which can have an energy requirement that is 50% higher than similar housed animals. Supplementary feed is an integral tool in deer management and can have a positive impact on deer growth over the winter period. During the winter months it is vital that pregnant hinds receive adequate nutrition in order to meet their own needs and the demands of a growing foetus. 1st and 2nd parity hinds and does will still be growing so additional nutrition is required. The correct mix of well-balanced Cairngorm Grower No. 1 feed with conserved forage will be able to meet these enhanced demands during the winter months.

STAG FEEDING Ensuring Stags have the correct feed is particularly important. Having lost up to a third of their body weight during the rut, Stags need to recover condition before the worst of the winter sets in. First year stags being reared for finishing the following autumn, need the extra energy and higher nutrient specification of the Cairngorm Grower No. 1 feed in order to ensure consistent growth, particularly if forage is not top quality. Appetites are relatively low in winter and poor forage quality can result in low feed intake. Therefore, adequate supplementation is necessary to ensure the nutrient requirements of growing stags are met.

MAINTAINING HEALTH The most common health concerns affecting deer are worm infestations. If you do not have deer handling facilities, Cairngorm Deer Feeds can be supplemented with a prescribed in-feed wormer, which is a very effective and convenient way of worming deer. (Please note that a veterinary prescription is legally required). The most beneficial times of year to worm deer are: • just before the rut. • again in the late spring when housed animals are being turned out and hinds and does are approaching calving. • repeat treatment in mid-summer.
